Young Adult Every Time You Hear That Song by Jenna Voris They say to never meet your idols. But they never said anything about upending your life for a quest designed by one. Seventeen-year-old aspiring journalist Darren Purchase has been a lifelong fan of country music legend Decklee Cassel, who’s as famous for her classic hits as she is for her partnership with songwriter Mickenlee Hooper. Ava breaks Shane out of prison at the very start, then, with a few different configurations of crew members, they pull off a series of heists to get supplies to their families and hopefully mess things up for the military exploiting their planet. Cyrus is a member of that military, newly graduated and ready to climb the hierarchy. When he runs into the outlaws it complicates his worldview and he starts to think his commander might not be dealing fairly with their planet.
I was just familiar enough with Bonnie and Clyde as an idea that I came into this prepared for major character death, and it's a good thing I was ready. This is the kind of story where all of the characters are fascinating but I didn't particularly think any of the main characters were unambiguously the good guys. My anchor amidst the ambiguous characterization is that someone gradually emerges as a definitive antagonist to the cluster of antiheroes.

ARC Review: Made of Stars by Jenna Voris

Order
Add to Goodreads
Publication Date: March 28, 2023
Synopsis:
Inspired by the lawless love story of Bonnie and Clyde, Jenna Voris's heart-stopping tale of passion and crime will have you seeing stars. Shane and Ava are a team. He steals the aircraft, she charms their mark, and together they take what they need. Not even their distracting chemistry could get in the way. Until Shane was caught and left to rot on a prison moon. Now, freshly escaped from confinement and simmering with anger, he has his sights set on their biggest job yet. Cyrus just graduated from the flight academy with a shiny new position lined up reporting to a well-respected general. On his very first assignment, he stops the outlaws in their tracks--or, he would have, if the annoyingly handsome Lark hadn't fallen for Ava's deception. But when Shane uncovers a top-secret plot that would leave his home world at the mercy of Cyrus's military leaders, he makes it his mission to thwart them at all costs. It isn't long before Shane and Ava make interstellar headlines with each new heist. And thanks to a chance run-in with the rebels, Cyrus is caught between two versions of the truth. He must pick a side and fast. Because Shane and Ava will bring the planet to its knees...or die trying.
My Rating: ★★★★★
*My Review below the cut.
My Review:
This was SO good! Think Star Wars but make it Bonnie & Clyde. And those twists at the end! I loved every second of this high-octane chase. And seeing it from two sides made it even more compelling.
The characters and their growth over the book were fabulous. I loved seeing the transformation of Ava and Shane in public perception from kids trying to save their families to murderers and criminals, and seeing that transformation play out on their bodies as they grew leaner and harder as the book went on. Cyrus's slow change of heart and realization about his future in the army was heartbreaking, as was his slow-simmering attraction to Lark.
The ending definitely left me wanting more, and I'm crossing my fingers for a follow-up because SURELY the author isn't going to just leave us hanging like that!
*Thanks to Bookishfirst and Penguin Teen for providing an early copy for review.

Thoughts:
A few standouts this month: Only and Forever brings the Bergman Brothers series to an end, and it was a worthy wrap up to these stories featuring MCs with disabilities and neurodivergence.
Just for the Summer is my new favorite Abby Jimenez book with several laugh out loud moments - especially the raccoon scene - which was hilarious on audio.
The Bookseller at the End of the World is not the cozy bookseller tale you might expect. Ruth led a varied and adventurous life filled with heartbreak and hope.
And I really enjoyed Says Who? - a super accessible and fun guide to English style and grammar.

Title: Made of Stars
Author: Jenna Voris
I like the cover on the book "Made of Stars" by Jenna Voris. I love the illustration and color palette used on it. It's very pretty the artist did a great job. Made me want to read it. This book was not a favorite of mine but I semi liked it a little. I struggled to get through it the book was very confusing from the start I could barely understand what was happening to be completely honest. It didn't have a build up and went straight into action.
Quote: "Shane had always thought killing would be harder, that it would take a certain king of person to wrap their hands around another's throat and squeeze until there was nothing left, but it had been over by the time the warden arrived, before the droids swarmed and the prisoners rioted. Killing was the easiest thing in the world. And Shane wasn't sorry."
