On the off chance that someone who is not me hears about Cinemax’s Jett and goes “Hmmmm....a show about a female master thief who is trying to stay one step ahead one people who want to use her and it stars Carla Gugino and Giancarlo Esposito?  Sounds good!”...maybe don’t?
Major Spoilers for the pilot to follow.
Jett is, indeed, very clever and resourceful and there’s honestly little to complain about as far acting or cinematography or pacing and I suppose it’s well written for what it it chooses to be, it’s just that what it chooses to be...listen, you know how there are times when something presents itself about being A Woman’s Story and her POV and whatnot and yes, it technically is, but also it’s very very much a man’s idea of that, and not in good ways, and it seeps into every bit of the show?  That’s what this is.
Jett has 4 lovers in the first episode, though one is in the past.  And, I mean, Carla Gugino can get as much as she wants, but there’s a”yikes” element to each of these.  One is her former and occasionally current boss, Charlie, who coerces Jett into getting back into a life of crime.  Jett says she “sometimes helps him out” when he gets bored with his wife because he saw to her young daughter’s welfare while Jett was in prison and helped her get back on her feet when she was out of prison.  Another of her lovers refers to this as Jett doing “charity work” and I was like “that’s an  interesting way to put ‘calls her for sex when he’s bored as payment for her daughter’s welfare,’ don’t you think?”  Lover number two is a cop who was undercover in an organization Jett worked for in the past.  He almost blew his cover and Jett ended up getting tortured but covered for him when their mutual boss tried to use her to expose the mole.  Jett later tells the cop she never wants to see him again, but he implies they later hooked up several times, because I guess that’s what you do when a man’s incompetence gets you tortured and you think you might die.  We learn about this while he’s having sex with his black girlfriend, whose only role in the episode is a sex scene and asking her boyfriend about his ex.  I figure she’s going to be dead or evil by the halfway point of the season because it’s probably that kind of show.
Both of these are treated as proof that Jett is confident and casual or whatever in her sex life with the problematic aspects waived aside and very much has the feel of “dude writing a femme fatale but thinks he’s just writing how confident women are” and left me with a sleezy feeling.
Then we get to the messier other two.  Quinn is Jett’s ex who Charlie breaks out of prison to help her steal a ring Charlie wants.  during this there’s an ever-so-fun side caper where a prison guard’s wife is kidnapped.  One of Charlie’s men threatens to repeatedly rape her if her husband doesn’t cooperate.  This character is already established as a “good guy, just a criminal” so we already know it’s a fake threat and it’s already being treated as humor before he turns to her and reassures her that he won’t actually rape her. Fake rape threats as a joke are still rape jokes and it didn’t help any when the Good Guy Crook then decided to chide the bound and gagged woman he’d just threatened to rape for cheating on her husband.
Anyway, Jett and Quinn have their reunion sex and catch up (including the “charity work” comment i mentioned before) and head for Cuba.  At this point I was, of course, leary but if the heist part went well enough, I was still giving the second episode a chance.
Alas.
When it comes to the heist, it turns out that the role of Jett, the world class master thief, who promotions and the show have hyped as beyond compare is...to seduce and distract the owner of the ring while Quinn does the actual theft.  During this Quinn is also the one who suspects something is wrong while Jett is unsuspicious.  Because he’s the one doing the actual thieving while Jett is otherwise occupied, he’s also the one  who finds proof that they’re being used in the form of blackmail photos of Charlie’s son having abused “boytoys.”  (Also the only firm LGBT content in the show...)
Quinn tries to rescue himself and Jett but they’re caught by the mark, who reveals he knew what they were up to all along.  He declares Quinn “useless” to him as an escaped convict and executes him.  Just for clarification: The white villain declares the black man (who is also the least-problematic of Jett’s lovers) useless and excecutes him because he did the only thing the show needed him to do.
Oh and for the second time in an episode Jett is held at gunpoint and ordered to work for someone or her daughter will be murdered, only this time it’s a real threat and the show ends with Jett being forced to submit.
I felt so empowered and like I was getting the powerful female thief show of my hopes and dreams.  Except, you know, the opposite.
