O homem do casaco vermelho – Julian Barnes

Um livro que é resultante de uma grande pesquisa histórica sobre o personagem central – Dr. Samuel Jean Pozzi – um ginecologista que colecionava arte, que foi muito importante a ser um dos primeiro a adotar, na França, o listerismo – um processo que evitava que as feridas se infectassem, pontos com categute (ao invés de fios de prata), uso de curativos esterilizados e drenos – processos que diminuíam significativamente as taxas de mortalidade após amputações. Também traduziu um livro de Darwin – A expressão das emoções no homem e nos animais. Enfim, um personagem interessante! Mas a história é contada através das histórias de outros contemporâneos – o conde de Montesquiou e o Príncipe Polignac. E muito se faz de comparação entre o conde e um personagem de um livro de Huysmans. Também se trata muito das aventuras amorosas de Pozzi e dos problemas de sua mulher e filha.

Enfim, o livro é chato de ler... Infelizmente! Um bom trecho é transcrito abaixo:

“’Nós não podemos saber’. Se usada com parcimônia, essa é uma das frases mais fortes na linguagem de um biógrafo. Ela nos faz lembrar que o encantador estudo de uma vida que estamos lendo, apesar de tantos detalhes, tamanho e notas de rodapé, apesar de todas as suas certezas factuais e hipóteses confiantes, só pode ser uma versão pública de uma vida pública, e uma versão parcial de uma vida privada. Biografia é um conjunto de buracos amarrados com um barbante, e mais ainda no que se refere à vida sexual e amorosa. ... Pozzi tinha a reputação de ser um “sedutor incorrigível”, um médico que dormia com suas pacientes, que pode até mesmo ter usado suas consultas como preliminares sexuais. Ele também guardou todas as cartas que recebeu de mulheres ao longo de uma careira sexual de meio século ou mais. Entretanto, após a morte dele, Mme. Pozzi instruiu seu filho Jean a queimar todas elas.. Então há muita coisa que não podemos saber.”

Av og til leser jeg bøker som jeg kanskje aldri hadde funnet fram til selv, hadde de ikke vært gitt meg av noen som vet hva som kan bli en innertier for Børgesita. Denne boka var en gave på alle plan. Jeg har altså lest Julian Barnes’ deilige og lærde «biografi» The Man in the Red Coat (2019), om den franske sosietetslegen, gynekologen og kirurgen Samuel Pozzi (1846 – 1918). Og grunnen til at jeg bruker hermetegn på biografi, er at den vel så mye handler om menneskene i det ultraglamorøse overklasselivet i Europa (men først og fremst i Paris) i La Belle Époque. Boka er stappet med alt du kan tenke deg av facts & fun facts, og (skikkelig saftig og sexy!) sladder og snobberi fra perioden. Alt er med. Ingen detalj for liten. Spesielt ikke på homofronten. Love it! Og alle er med. Marcel Proust, Oscar Wilde, Henry James, Sarah Bernhardt… Hele bunten. Boka åpner med at Pozzi i 1885 reiser til London med to kamerater, en prins og en greve, «…for a few days of intellectual and decorative shopping». Det betyr, på et litt mer nedpå norsk, som å handle greier som henholdsvis bøker og tapeter. Greven er for øvrig Montesquieu, modell for blant annet Prousts eksentriker Charlus i romanserien På sporet av den tapte tid, og Huysmans’ hovedperson des Esseintes i romanen Mot strømmen. Pozzi ble blant annet malt av John Singer Sargent (som jeg også skal bli malt av, når jeg blir gjenfødt, rik og vakker, i fortiden). Omslagsdetaljen på boka er hentet fra Sargents portrett av ham. Og Pozzi, dette parisiske megamennesket med både italienske og britiske aner, ble av Alice, den gang prinsesse av Monaco, karakterisert som «motbydelig kjekk». Enig med henne i kjekk. Det finnes fotografiske bevis. Jeg dauer. Ikke enig i motbydelig. Kanskje hun sa det fordi hun ikke kunne få ham. Så, vil du lese noe som off the beaten track? Do you find it hard to review a book?

Some reviews are, obviously, easier than others. It all depends on the book and how it makes you. I always find it difficult to review Julian Barnes. Not because I don’t enjoy his writing but because it always leaves me with so many thoughts. He’s definitely one of the greatest British writers at the moment but he always fills my head with loads of ideas.

It’s great but it makes it really hard to collect my thoughts. Today’s blog post is a review of his short novel The Noise of Time. It’s something I’ve been meaning to read for ages but just never got round to. I guess it didn’t help that my knowledge of Shostakovich is limited. Still, I’m very interested in Russian history and this sounded great.

Retelling three meetings with powerful men and how he reacted. It’s a story about power and the struggle of keeping your integrity. He’s a troubled man and has to live with his lack of courage. It’s a struggle but he does what he must to survive.

I really enjoyed this book but I definitely didn’t do a good job of reviewing it. It’s such a complex and brilliantly written work. It offers so many insight into courage and cowardice as well as the relationship between art and power. It’s already on my reread pile. ⭐⭐⭐⭐

登月小艇的駕駛威廉·安德斯使用特別改造的哈蘇相機，拍下三分之二個地球高掛在夜空中。他照片中的地球色澤飽滿美麗，有羽毛狀的雲量、打旋的風暴系統、蔚藍的海水和紅褐色的大陸。安德斯少將事後回憶：

當時，安德斯的照片既美麗又令人惶惶不安，至今依然如此。從遠方看著自己，主體瞬間變為客體，讓我們的心理遭受打擊。但首先將兩者結合在一起的卻是頭髮火紅的納達爾——即使只是從幾百公尺高處，即使只是黑白照片，即使只是幾張巴黎街景照。

This book starts off interestingly about a 19 year old man who has come home from college for his summer break. It could have been a better read had it involved more characters but then again I think that was the idea since the book is called “The only story”. It is a different kind of romantic novel that explores the relationship between a 19 year old and  48 year old married woman and it is as though the author aims to deconstruct the shock waves that take place due to this arrangement. 

I decided to read more from Julian Barnes after having read The sense of an Ending which was very philosophical. This  however is a breezy book and perfect for light reading. 

“Things, once gone, can't be put back; he knew that now. A punch, once delivered, can't be withdrawn. Words, once spoken, can't be unsaid. We may go on as if nothing has been lost, nothing done, nothing said; we may claim to forget it all; but our innermost core doesn't forget, because we have been changed forever.”

RECENSIONE × IL SENSO DI UNA FINE × ⠀ Salve lettori! 📚🌹 ⠀ Oggi vi parlo del libro "Il senso di una fine" di Julian Barnes edito @einaudieditore ⠀ Il nostro protagonista è Tony, un uomo che in pratica non ha nessuna qualità, non eccelle negli studi e nemmeno nel lavoro, non sa dimostrare i propri sentimenti e non se la cava neanche a letto. Ma un lascito di cinquecento sterline e un diario del suo migliore amico, Adrian, morto suicida quarant'anni fa, danno un scossone alla sua vita. ⠀ Chi gli ha lasciato quella strana eredità? Soprattutto, per quale motivo? ⠀ Nel rincorrere la verità per tutto il libro, tra ricordi passati e scelte sbagliate del presente, Tony scoprirà verità che forse era meglio lasciare nascoste. ⠀ Aimè lettori!
