I recently got into the horror visual novel Scarlet Hollow by Black Tabby Games and it's sO good!! Abby Howard's visuals and characters have my whole heart. These are my faves from the roster and my player character, Jude, in the middle. she's better at talking to animals than people, so of course I had to draw Dustin too.

Everything I love about Kaneeka

Kaneeka gets way too much hate in the Scarlet Hollow fandom and I was going to share some thoughts on her childhood and compare it to Tabitha's and how that affects how they interact, but frankly enough has been said about that. Instead I wanted to talk about some things that I love about Kaneeka:

~ her conversations about aliens are so delightful and I love how much fun she has talking about it even stopping herself if she gets too into it

~ I love that she'll tell off Tabitha for dragging you back to the car on day 2. even though I love Tabitha, Kaneeka is right that dragging a full adult to the car when they're in the middle of a conversation is incredibly disrespectful and I appreciate her saying so.

~ in fact she's the only person in the town to call out Tabitha's mean behavior to anyone. when Tabitha enters Oscar's home and immediately insults him and boasts about the Scarlets owning all the property in town Kaneeka rightfully tells her to cut it out.

~ if you're scared when meeting Wayne during your investigation and want to stop Stella will tell you to keep going and Kaneeka will tell her to respect your boundary and that if you're scared you can stop

~ if you insult Reese's art she sticks up for him and gives him genuine compliments.

~ she's the only person to call out red flags about Joan Kelly's abusive behavior (this one is rare I can't remember how I got this dialogue)

~ when Pastor Daniel asks to speak to you alone she looks out for you and makes sure he knows she is. yeah he might just be cursed but she doesn't know that, she just knows that some guy she doesn't trust wants her friend alone and she's not going to let that happen.

~ when Avery theorizes that you might be a magical catalyst Kaneeka will protect you, knowing full well that if things get worse people might start blaming you

In conclusion Kaneeka is a wonderful character and I wish people would give her more of a chance. There's a reason even Tabitha admits she respects her, she's a sweetheart who will defend her friends to the bitter end.

i can understand why kaneeka definitely does not like tabitha and she has valid reasons to (she’s rude towards kaneeka, tabitha and her late mother own a decent portion of the town, pearlanne attempted to buy out the general store, there is no union for the miners, and the conditions that the miners work in are likely very questionable).

the good thing about this game is that the characters are very multifaceted and feel very human. you will get different perspectives on each character, depending on what choices you make. you can disagree with kaneeka, that’s fine! but i can not stand the hate towards her, it isn’t warranted and it feels targeted.

i adore each and every character in this game, they’re so well-written, even minor characters that don’t play much of an active role in the story.
