Love At First Sight (2023)

Okay, we’re going to talk about the new Netflix romance directed by Vanessa Caswill, Love At First Sight, because I’m seeing almost no chatter about it and that cannot stand. Full disclosure, I’ve never read the book on which this movie is based, The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight, so I’m reacting only to the film (which I’ve now seen 4.5 times in 2 days).

The Surface Reading

It’s a perfect, tight, adorable little RomCom that’s heavy on the Rom and light on the Com, with a wrenching dash of angst and the most hair-twirling chemistry between two leads that has graced our screens in years. Truly, if all you want is 90 minutes of two actors being saccharine precious cinnamon rolls, look no further!

There are simple takeaways here, like that chance can only take you so far, but in the end you have to choose to love. Or that change and loss are part of life and you can’t run from them. Or that London is a massive labyrinth of eccentric people that probably looks 400% cooler onscreen than it is in reality (I wouldn’t know, I’ve never visited, so this and the 90s Parent Trap are the extent of my knowledge about the city, sorry).

Anyway, I adored how straightforward the story was - that the narrator (played brilliantly by Jameela Jamil) tells you directly in the first two minutes that it’s a story about love, fate, and statistics. She then repeatedly describes every development as it is happening, the characters’ histories and internal monologues, and all the context you need to follow the thin but fast-paced plot. The writing, performances, and production design are all solid, allowing the audience to get lost in the romance as it unfolds.

BUT if you’re slightly unhinged like I am and you’re always looking for more layers in your media, HAVE NO FEAR! There is in fact more going on in this little movie than you might expect.

Color Theory

For starters, the use of red and green in the film is fascinating. Yes, I realize the action of the story takes place a few days before Christmas, so you might assume it was just a seasonal aesthetic choice, but if you look closer, you can see very carefully selected shades of red and green repeating throughout the film. The red is a cool, deep rose color, sometimes pink, while the green is cool and dark, like oxidized bronze rather than emerald. Further, while they appear over and over, these hues are rarely used in a purely decorative or festive way. Instead, they play a role in the separation and coming together of the couple. On a color wheel, red and green are complements, perfect opposites that are never adjacent but always joined in the middle.

The title card during Hadley’s introduction is literally a green stripe over a red stripe, then the hallways of the airport are green, and of course Hadley’s ever-important backpack is a rosy red. As the couple grow closer on their flight, the light turns pink. Once in London, a green van takes Oliver one way while a red taxi takes Hadley the other. At her father’s wedding, Hadley is dressed in red (“the color of a bruise” she calls it), contrasting beautifully against her green jacket. Upon realizing Oliver’s true purpose, she chases after him on an iconic red double-decker bus. Meanwhile at the living memorial, Oliver’s father is dressed in red while his mother wears a faded green, as if to say she is already beginning to fade away. The event is decorated with green drapery and streamers, and there are even stacks of red and green chairs in the stairwell where Oliver begs his mother to receive treatment.

Hadley gifts her red and green bouquet to Tessa, and when she is driven away, a green-clad narrator returns the red backpack to Oliver. Wandering London alone, Hadley exchanges her painful red heels for a pair of green trainers (“sneakers!” she insists), and tries to call her dad first in a red phone booth and then on a phone from a stranger sitting in a cluster of red chairs. Finally, Oliver chooses to pursue Hadley to the wedding reception which is lit in pink, and where they finally share the long-awaited kiss.

There are many more examples, but in general we see that green indicates separation and loss, while red symbolizes joining, intimacy, and (what else?) love! It lends the film a gorgeous, subtle aesthetic without being garishly festive, and shows the lovers’ emotional journey from lonely childhood to vulnerable, loving adulthood.

Death and Rebirth

Speaking of which, there’s plenty of rebirth imagery too! When Hadley and Oliver meet, they are both still children, struggling with the impending loss of parental security through divorce and death. Thus, when they board the plane, it is as if they enter an underworld or womb, separated from their families and remade as new adults. They emerge on the other side into a hallway (read: birth canal), as each must still confront their own dying childhood before they can join as full and equal partners. Hadley journeys to a bright, red-strewn celebration of life, while Oliver must enter a dark green commemoration of death, his fear driving him deeper to hide in another hallway. Here his mother comes to find him, begging him to emerge into life, but Ollie still can’t confront her death alone.

Thankfully, Hadley travels to this underworld to find him, bursting into the memorial like a bright red flower. Even the bruise metaphor works, acknowledging the pain they are both experiencing at the changes in their lives. But Oliver still refuses to face his fears, trying to take a shortcut around death to life with Hadley. Still, she knows he’s not ready (likely because she’s not yet, either), and gently pushes back. And so, Oliver returns to the underworld, and Hadley walks off alone until she descends barefoot through a soggy riverside tunnel (birth canal again!). Finally, she calls her father and admits she is “lost.” When he arrives, Hadley at last gathers the courage to ask why he ended their old life, and to tell him how much it hurt her. But as Oliver predicted, she forgives her dad and even begins to accept his new bride.

Back at the memorial, Oliver is reminded by Hadley’s red backpack - his unaddressed emotional baggage - to be honest about his pain. In at last openly mourning his mother and his own childhood, Ollie takes a step into adulthood, just enough for his family to nudge him that extra bit to go after Hadley. And so, the family delivers him to his bride, who has meanwhile learned to dance again, even through her heartbreak. With one last confession, the two consummate their love with a kiss, bathed in pink light before an open door.

Happily Ever After

There’s so much more, with the hand-holding, numbers, Shakespeare, Dickens, the music, and beyond, but the point is that this cute, charming little romance is actually very deliberately constructed. It follows timeless patterns and motifs which we instinctively understand through visual and auditory language. And the narration plays a huge role in this as well, not unlike the prologues and epilogues of the Bard’s plays in that they state the story’s lessons plainly: that we cannot always be prepared for unwelcome surprises, but that we can make the choice to love every day.

Anyway, Vanessa Caswill deserves all the flowers and if you haven’t seen her gorgeous adaptation of Little Women (with all due respect to the marvelous Greta Gerwig and Gillian Armstrong), please do yourself a favor and watch that after you finish this!

On a positive note!!! I just got home from seeing Andrew Bird live!!!!!! That was such an amazing concert omg

He's a violinist (well multi-instrumentalist, buttt I love him for his violin), and god it was such a beautiful show, and the lights were super coooool

I have now gone to three concerts this year and it's kinda surreal to me, but I am very much enjoying being an adult and getting to choose what I spend my money on lmaooo

I went to a half alive concert a few months ago and HOLYSHIT IT WAS THE COOLEST SHOW EVERRRR they performed the first two songs (Tip Toe and the Fall) behind a sheet, and used the lights so we could see their shadows and holyyyyy shitttt it was so cool and then during the Fall, the curtains dropped before they went full blast into the last chorus and--

For me I'm not really sure... since like all the concerts I've gone to have been so different. For Andrew Bird, I'd probably say just how beautiful and relaxing it was. For half-alive, I'd say the energy of dancing (i was on the floor) and singing along and seeing how happy the band and the audience was. The Crywank concert was dope bc of how personable it was. There was like only 50 of us in the room? Maybe? And we got to talk to them and shout out song suggestions n stuff. My mom took me to a Twenty One Pilots concert when I was younger (despite me literally only knowing their most popular songs and never listening to them lol) and that concert was super cool bc of like the show. They lit a whole ass car on fire it was very intense ahahaha

I'm actually really surprised i've never heard of andrew bird considering I love violin music and used to listen to a lot of string instrumentalists. that sounds so fun though I'm glad you had a good time!!

literally the best part of being an adult is getting to decide what to spend your money on. like I can go get mcdonalds if I want I can buy concert tickets if I want I can take a trip to visit friends if I want it's fantastic

while I have been to a few other concerts I didn't start going to them regularly until I got into lovejoy. my first ever concert was a katy perry concert I went to when I was 12 which was fun. although I've never actively sought out lindsey stirling concerts I've just ended up going to two of them?? her concerts are very fun the lighting and all that is very cool. one of those lindsey stirling concerts was also an evanescence concert bc they were touring together at the time and the person i went with was a huge evanescence fan while I'd literally never listened to them except for bring me to life, but it was really fun!! amy lee has a gorgeous voice. she also sang for lindsey stirling's shatter me and it was really cool. oh also I went to a billie eilish concert once her voice is soooooo pretty oh my god. hearing 'i love you' live hit so hard

when I was in college my uni used to host a big concert in the spring and so I went my freshman year and they had hayley kiyoko performing which was awesome. so many girls threw their bras at her it was great. also joji performed there too and he was really drunk. also he kept being super hype in between songs like "LET'S FUCKING GOOOOO" and then would immediately jump into singing the most depressing ballad you've ever heard in your life. the juxtaposition was insane.

i think the concerts (besides lovejoy) i've had the most fun at were really small ones? at my college there was this super tiny music venue right next to campus. it was student run and they'd host very small shows there. the first time I ever moshed was at one of the shows they had for an indie rock band called sitting on stacy. I'd never heard of them before the show but the energy was fantastic and I found out I loved moshing bc of that. a few years later the venue was having a whole afternoon + evening event with just different small bands rotating in and out. a guy I knew invited me to it as a date and it was so much fun. I moshed so much and got to hear some really good music though there were so many bands I don't remember the names of any of them. my date and I ended up hanging out with these two girls we met and when we were all talking later I found out one of them was an mcyt fan which was pretty funny. bc this was only a few months after I'd finished clinic and sirentwt had happened. my date did not know I was into mcyt. it was a time.

I guess my favorite part of concerts is usually having that kind of intimacy you mentioned you had at the crywank concert (btw, so fucking jealous you got to see crywank. they were on tour with lovejoy for one of the shows I went to and they were so good I desperately want to see them at one of their own shows). like the small concerts I went to at that venue at my college were so much fun bc it was just like house party size stuff. and then while lovejoy shows are getting bigger and bigger with every venue, it's still so much smaller than most other concerts I've been to in the past (like compared to giant stadium gigs). the bowery ballroom gig was like 500 people I think? and it's definitely my favorite lovejoy gig I've been to so far (out of 2 tho so not saying much. will update you after next week I have 2 lovejoy shows lined up). bowery was so cool, I was pressed right against the stage to the point where I had to move my phone off the stage so wilbur didn't step on it (and also had to move so he didn't hit me in the head with his guitar). the music was amazing, it was lovejoy's first ever show in the US so that was great, the queue throughout the day had great vibes, me and firesnap asked mark and joe lovejoy if they wanted to take tequila shots with us, it was so fucking fun

SD was definitely fun but didn't hit the same. I have a really good feeling about pioneertown though :)

Collection Report Part 2: Widmer Brothers Brewing Company Records, 1984-2013

Previously, I posted about the collection pick up and the collection description. Today I'm going to tell you about the Widmer Brothers Brewing Company company!

The Widmer Brothers Brewing Company was founded in 1984 in Portland, Oregon by Kurt and Rob Widmer.

Portland is known as the locus of a local beer scene. The Cartwright Brewing Company founded there in 1980, four years later the Bridgeport Brewing Company and Widmer Brewing followed. Not everyone was keen to try the unfamiliar beers and the brothers struggled to get taverns to offer them. They only sold beer in kegs, believing flavor was degraded by the bottling process, so they were dependent on draft sales. To increase awareness and promote their beers, they formed the "Widmer Designated Drinker" program; the brothers and their friends rented vans (driven by nondrinkers) and traveled to bars where they ordered large amounts of Widmer beer. Fortunately, in future years they sold more than their friends and families consumed.

Kurt was introduced to a wide variety of beer styles while living in Germany in the 1970s, and brewed his own beer after he returned to the United States. He used a traditional strain of yeast obtained from the Brewing Research Institute in Weihenstephan, Bavaria, and later returned to Germany to fine-tune his craft at a brewery in Dusseldorf. The brothers wanted to open a brewery and raised more than $50,000 from family members and an outside investor. With their father Raymond, they set about assembling a small brewery at 1405 NW Lovejoy Street, in an industrial part of NW Portland now known as the Pearl District. At the time, the brewing industry was comprised of large, industrial-sized breweries, which meant this smaller microbrewery had to be creative when acquiring equipment. They purchased used dairy and restaurant equipment (a dairy tank turned mash tun and shrimp cooker turned whirlpool), and by fall began running test batches.

The first Widmer offering, Altbier (German for "old beer"), was offered for sale in early 1985, and the richly flavored brew was soon joined by Weizenbier, a lighter variety filtered wheat beer. They marketed the beer to taverns and pubs, often delivering kegs in the red 1970 Datsun pickup truck they borrowed from their dad. Their first year production totaled 400 barrels. The Dublin Pub was their first longtime account and served both Altbier and Weizenbier; in 1986, owners Carl Simpson and Katie Bullard wanted them to make a third beer. This was a challenge because they only had two fermenters and couldn’t afford to buy another. They decided to leave the Weizenbier unfiltered, use Cascade hops, and put it directly into kegs. The result was a uniquely cloudy beer, the first American-style Hefeweizen or Hefe, which translated from German means "yeast wheat." This style of "American Hefeweizen" and the custom of serving wheat beers with a slice of lemon spread widely. Also in 1986, the brewery released Festbier, a seasonal "winter warmer" beer brewed for winter months.

Annual production increased each year. By 1989, they reached maximum capacity on their brewing equipment and had to turn away new business. They bought two adjoining historic buildings in North Portland that were slated for demolition and planned to renovate them for a new brewery. The 100-year-old Smithson and McKay Buildings had Italianate and Romanesque Revival brickwork, a cast-iron storefront, and were on the National Register of Historic Places. The extensive interior work meant renovation costs were significantly higher than constructing a new facility from scratch. They increased production dramatically, but demand grew even faster. In 1992, they laid out plans for an expansion adjacent to the brewery that would, once again, double production. They continued to only distribute their beer in kegs, but in 1996, decided to begin bottling.

In 1995, they opened a pub and restaurant, the Widmer Gasthaus, and began work on the brewery expansion. In spring of 1996, the new $20 million brewery opened and its brewing vessels and utilities were connected to the older one through under-the-street tunnels. At that time, Widmer produced 11 different beers; this included year-round production of Hefeweizen, Widberry Weizen, Blackbier, Amberbier, Altbier, and Weizen and seasonal beers Doppelbock, Oktoberfest, and Winternacht. In 1997, they introduced new beers, including Widmer Vienna and Czech Pilsner, as well as a hard cider. They made seven year-round brews and the seasonals Golden Bock, Sommerbrau Kolsch, and Hop Jack Pale Ale. In early 2000, they unveiled redesigned packaging, which emphasized the "W" initial in the firm's name and featured more colorful graphics. In 2003, they started brewing Hefeweizen at the New Hampshire RedHook Ale Brewery plant. In 2004, they introduced a seasonal brew called Snowplow Milk Stout, which had been developed by the Oregon Brew Crew, a home brewers club to which the brothers belonged. In 2005, they launched the “W Series,” which showcased their brewmaster’s most innovative and creative recipes.

In 1997, they sold a 27% stake to Anheuser-Busch InBev for $18.25 million in order to gain access to their distribution network and strengthen the company financially at a time when many craft brewers were struggling. Anheuser-Busch InBev had already purchased a stake in Seattle's RedHook Ale Brewery. In 2007, RedHook and Widmer Brothers announced plans to formally merge, forming a new company called the Craft Brewers Alliance, It was renamed Craft Brew Alliance in 2012. By 2013 was composed of five beer and cider brands: Widmer Brothers Brewery, RedHook Ale Brewery (founded in 1981 in Seattle, Washington), Kona Brewing Company (founded in 1994 in Kona, Hawaii), Omission Beer (developed in 2012 in Portland), and Square Mile Cider (launched in 2013).

Kurt Widmer retired in 2016, the Gasthaus closed in 2019, and Anheuser-Busch InBev acquired the company in 2020.
