KinnPorsche The Series as a case study of a successful Thai BL series abroad.
Tumblr media
The Economy segment, ThaiPBS News (07/17/2023)
K'Siwat's Sawasdimaneekul (New), director and executive of Studio Wabi Sabi and Dr. Chakrit Pichyangkul, director of the Creative Economy Agency (CA) raised "KinnPorsche The Series" as a case study for Thai BL that became successful in foreign countries as it breaks all the rules that have ever been made.
Breaking out of the framework of plot that is only within the university setting to the mafia world makes it a success and is an example of how to make content differently.
Dr. Wit (Host 1): I would like to talk about a case that is successful in the ThaiBL industry, overseas, in terms of the plot because many viewers at home may not have been following much bl shows. They might have been following some… but which of them we should learn from, so that we can branch out? let's start with New first.
New: At the moment, it would be Kinnporsche The Series, we can clearly see that, I can say it since the moment I've been part of the industry, KinnPorsche The Series is a show that is tremendously successful, extraordinary, of a world-class level, honestly.
Dr. Wit (Host 1): Because?…
New: It's..
Dr. Wit (Host 1): Because we have many shows, right?
New: Yes, yes...
Dr. Wit (Host 1): So why does that show has the charm/power it has in drawing the audience?
New: One reason could be because it's different in terms of the plot. It came in a time when lots of people/shows have not been set outside of the university backdrop as much. And it's a mafia-esque world, it also has a very masculine vibe, and it has a beautiful production as well. Including the acting of the actors that are well-balanced too. Many of the elements complement, all of it complement each other to make the show a great success.
K'Watcharathit (Host 2): Can we say that it's one of the masterpieces within the ThaiBL industry?
New: Very much so
K'Watcharathit (Host 2): Really?
New: Very much so, and i believe that they, the production team, really put in their effort and commitment towards the show. No matter if it's the production itself or the financial investment that we can just tell that there's a lot of financial investment to produce that show... frankly speaking they just put in their all with that show, so, yeah, it's great, the result is what it should have been.
Dr. Wit (Host 1): The output is worth the input, right?
New: Correct
Dr. Chakrit: *replies to the same initial question* I would say KinnPorsche The Series as well, I think this show is a good case study because it's on the iQiYi platform, a large streaming platform that reaches audiences both in China and overseas. There's a lot of viewers, and a show, it's one of the first shows that can adjust, evolve the content from the norm that is within the university and university students or highschool, to a mafia world. There's action, as well. And a mix of comedy. So, when there's action-thriller added to a show like this… companies need to find new products, and this is the new product of BL series that came out in a style that is not traditional, with light-hearted humor, nor confined within the school or university setting. But it's set within the real world that more people could relate to and has action-thrillers that people didn't not expect that could be included in a BL series. I think this is an important aspect, that it could be done, and the financial income, I think there could be a collaboration with iQiYi as well, and with the larger number of viewers that is exponentially high, it's clear that the two male lead actors, both Mile and Apo are well-received at the world stage, right now with lots of fans. I think it's a great case and an interesting one. And I think that from now on, we'll see BL series that have other dimensions. It might be within another career, there might be a fantasy genre, or ghost, etc., we don't know what the future holds, so it could happen. There are many things to do and explore. There's another aspect that BL series could explore that doesn't have to be a light-hearted humor purely anymore. This is just the beginning.
K'Watcharathit (Host 2): Period, historical ones, right?
Dr. Chakrit: There'll be more...
New: Yes... this year has a lot of period BL shows... yes, both films and tv shows
K'Watcharathit (Host 2): Oh..
Dr. Chakrit: The person who did KinnPorsche The Series, is also doing a period piece, 'Man Suang' that opened in Cannes already.... it's showing around the end of August, right?
New: end of August, yes
Dr. Chakrit: In August it'll be released in Thailand. It’s another film that is worth watching, and is played by the same actors, Mile and Apo. Which I think, from the trailer, oh wow, they really were determined/put in the effort in producing it. Like the filming set looks like it's around the reign of King Rama III...

MileApo and the rise of Thai soft power
Mile and Apo talking about the Thai period film at the Vogue Thailand Gala on 2022/9/21
I've been meaning to sit down and write about this for a while now, ever since I saw the pattern of Mile and Apo injecting it into their talking points about the 2023 historical film, but it's taken some an effort to actually lay it out. Hopefully the time I sat with it will make the it a more insightful, rich reading experience.
Disclaimers:
(1) I have no formal experience in international relations aside from reading and watching the news, but my strong point is research. Folks with a more formal backgrounds in policsci or IR are welcome to add their input!
(2) Comments about policies or political actions of nations, whether positive, neutral or negative, are not meant to reflect on private individuals of the nationality, even those with a notable amount of social-cultural capital. Private individuals, despite their positions of social influence, most often have little to no individual influence on a policy level**.
So without further ado:
What is soft power? (aka soft power for dummies)
Joseph Nye, a then-Harvard professor, coined the term soft power in the 1980s/early 90s. He described it as:
“A country’s ability to influence the preferences and behaviors of various actors in the international arena (states, corporations, communities, publics etc.) through attraction or persuasion rather than coercion.”
In his book Bound to Lead, Nye established that three prongs of a country's soft power were its culture, its political values, and its policies. Here are two different graphics that further break down what those look like when evaluating soft power in practice.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
If you feel like all the above is still vague to the point of unparsable in an applied context, I spent the majority of the time researching how to demystify the term especially in the way MileApo discuss it, and found this great explainer:
A strong nation brand and positive soft power perceptions allow a nation to promote itself as a place for people to visit, invest in, and build a reputation for their quality of goods and services. [...] it is often overlooked that a strong nation brand and soft power can deliver better outcomes at home. Primarily it encourages domestic tourism, the consumption of domestic goods and services (rather than imports). Less tangibly it also just makes people feel better about their country.
Tumblr media
Expressed in this context, soft power can be understood as the act of building trust in the cultural products of a nation domestically -- some more abstract in the form of art (music, film) and culture, some more concrete like products including fashion and beauty -- in a manner to appeal to its own citizens while also broadening the appeal of cultural goods abroad in a which can drive international tourism, trade, and commerce.
In other words: yes, our collective desire to actually taste Farmhouse bread.
The Thai government and the push for soft power
While my interest in this topic was originally piqued by MileApo's comments, soft power policy has to originate at the government level. Note again that Nye's definition of soft power is centered around "a country’s ability to influence", therefore soft power policy must always formally be expressed nationally.
Around the time MileApo consistently began promoting soft power in alignment with the period film, I noticed a slew of references in Bangkok Post, one of the reputable English online publications based in Thailand.
Back tracking through some of the articles as a reflection of national conversation, since 2020, there has been a consistent theme in terms of what the government is attempting and how well it's going (or not going):
On Thailand's soft power and positioning in the world, Feb 2020:
According to Kitti Prasirtsuk of Thammasat University, who has carried out extensive research into Thailand's branding and repositioning in the age of interconnectedness and social media, Thailand and its culture, values and foreign policy have charisma and high persuasive power which can attract admiration and cooperation. But the Thai people and bureaucrats must change their mindset and perceptions and appreciate their country in real terms first before they take up new challenges.
Within Asean, Thailand is behind Singapore as No.1 [among SE Asian soft power rankings]. The report stated that Thailand has the potential to rise into the top 30 in the world, if the country can strike the right political balance between the rural poor and urban elite. It went on to say that Thailand's weaknesses are problems related to corruption and inequality. It also said that the Thai government is failing to showcase the full potential of Thailand's rich cultural offerings beyond tourism. One more weak link is its poor performance in public diplomacy and digital infrastructure.
(Mile, Apo, and Bible all attended Thammasat University, which is considered one of the premiere universities in Thailand. Apo later transferred and graduated from a different university.)
On Milli, a Thai rapper who performed at Coachella in Spring 2022:
The presence of the 19-year-old rapper Milli at the Coachella Music Festival in the United States has reinvigorated Thailand's soft power ambitions -- an area the Thai government has not fully explored nor exploited. Milli, whose real name is Danupha Khanatheerakul, is the first solo Thai artist to perform at Coachella, a music festival that draws tens of thousands of fans annually.
[Milli's prescence at Coachella] was able to advance Thailand's soft power [in ways previously stalled]. It is not that the government is clueless about "soft power". For decades, governments have focused on presenting Thailand's soft power to the world. However, that iteration of "soft power" mainly consisted of Thai customs and traditions such as food, costume, classical dance, Buddhism rituals and the wai. These aspects of our cultural heritage, despite being charming to foreign tourists, are not sufficient to catapult Thailand's into a stronger position in the global market. Thai cultural heritage has failed to catch up in the digital age…
Milli's song also includes ideas relevant to international audiences. One of her songs openly discusses sexual consent. Being relevant is one of the keys to increasing the nation's presence among diverse populations. The cultural impact made by a young girl like Milli should make the government rethink its cultural promotion strategy. More support is needed for progressive Thai artists and innovators.
An opinion rebuttable on Milli's performance and the government's blundering of reaching for soft power while not meeting basic domestic requirements:
One of the minister's advisers belted out a long speech that did not seem to address how Thailand will become a "soft power" but used the term multiple times. One can't help but wonder if the ministry knows what it is doing, or what the so-called "soft power" it is espousing is about.
Milli's self-taunting line "I don't ride an elephant" may sound a bit old but her rapping about how "the country is good, people are good, our food is good but the government is bood," seems to have struck a chord. "Bood" means rotten in Thai. It is thus understandable if the government was not too coherent when discussing anything about the phenomenon that Milli created. Indeed, [Thailand's Prime Minister] Gen Prayut should feel awkward discussing the "soft power" of Milli and mango sticky rice when he filed a defamation charge against the teen rapper himself back in June last year.
Talented as Milli is, and extraordinary her achievements both locally and at one of the world's most famous music festivals have been, the teenage rapper really has nothing to do with so-called "soft power" which government figures are talking about. Her success is largely individual. Milli created a sensation and a craze. For Thailand's "soft power" to be built, let alone recognised globally, it takes more than one successful artist…
The whole product must be good if it is to exert influence. As experts argued, it takes a wide range of qualities for a country to say it has "soft power". These include the quality of its political institutions, education, digital development, innovation, cultural appeal, strength in arts or business brands. That is why it is odd for everyone to talk about Thailand's "soft power" now when we don't seem to have ticked any of the basic requirements.
On Bangkok International Fashion Week (BIFW):
BIFW2022 has been [a] major and continuing mission to promote and drive Thai fashion to international levels. The event strategically aligns with the government’s strategy to empower Thai fashion industry as fashion is one of the most influential soft power that stimulate economic growth.
Note that multiple actors in BOC walked BIFW2022 in September, as well as multiple actors from other Thai BL shows that aired in 2022.
On the increasing popularity of Thai BL:
Thai BL is now popular across Southeast and East Asia[, and] has been gaining traction in Japan, the home of BL, since 2020. Posters of famous khu jin were put up in a train station. Magazines that cover Thai drama, including BL, are rolled out for the Japanese audience. The Tourism Authority of Thailand has launched a Twitter account that uses BL to engage Japanese consumers. They are conducting research on these issues in the context of soft power.
Yes you read that correctly. No joke, BL as a facet of Thai soft power is so prevalent now that the government is literally tracking its popularity and Twitter conversation around the topic.
So what does this all mean?
Thailand is a country within Asia and internationally that has a lot of appeal as a tourism destination. However, with many competitor alternatives in both entertainment (particularly film and music) and beauty/fashion, which are major drivers soft power within Asia and internationally, and domestic dissidence of policy and politicians due to social conditions, Thai cultural power is not as prominent as it could be and also suffers at the international level.
While there is appeal of specific Thai cultural products internationally (such as Milli at Coachella or in the case of Kinnporsche the Series) the government has failed to activate these prominent media products as part of a cohesive soft power strategy.
However, the government does seem aware of the potential, specifically in the realm of BL. Thailand has always maintained an image of being LGBTQ-friendly among all the Asian countries, and may now be looking to push LGBTQ-aligned media (BL and GL dramas) specifically as part of its soft power strategy to increase pop culture and media appeal.
MileApo on Soft Power
Part of the reason my ears perked up at MileApo's consistent talking point of soft power is again, because even without a polisci background, I'm aware that soft power is expressed at the country policy level. Thus when both of them started specifically using the term to discuss the film in pre-production phase, it got my brain gears turning.
Tumblr media
Mile talking about the film on 2022/9/24 at the D7 Grand Opening (vid/txt)
Tumblr media
"Nong Po will act with Hia Mile -- please look forward to this movie next year, please look forward to that a lot. We want to expand Thai culture and soft power..." Apo on the Thai period movie at the KPWT Send off on 2022/9/11
Tumblr media
Mile Phakphum's speech on Mother's Day in Kalasin, 2022/8/5
Here's what we do know. Apo's dance training for the film is with a teacher affiliated with the academy that also produces dancers who specifically entertain the royal court.
Tumblr media
And here is what they individually said in the Vogue Thailand print interview (completed in late August 2022, published October 2022)
Tumblr media
And I would be remiss and dishonest to not point out that Mile's family is prominent in Thailand and his mother is part of the Queen's inner circle. Keep in mind that Thailand is a constitutional monarchy where the monarch has limited powers in practice (think: Japan or UK), and Thailand has a history of cyclical political instability that does not displace the monarchy. So believe him when he says he has limited power compared to Kinn. He travels on a private citizen's passport like all the rest of the cast. (Though my eyes start watering when I'm thinking about baby chaebol CEO Mile and destiny.*)
That being said, what these connections likely did get the production team was access to cultural resources such as the dance expert and most likely credentialed historians to consult on the period film. I would surprised if there aren't ministers' offices who are in the loop about film's production in a way they would not pay to other film or show production teams. I'm sure we will find out more about the interesting and important people involved in the production process around the time the film is released.
Another aspect that stood out to me is the fact that Mile and Apo, neither of whom have policy backgrounds, started iterating the discussion point of soft power in a way you don't see Milli, or Mew Suppassit (who let's not forget was also a RSIFF invitee and the first Thai artist to break into the Billboard World Song Chart), talk about it. Mew actually has talked about soft power a couple of times, but only in the context that he is part of a cultural wave that can increase Thailand's influence globally and never specifically in relation to a project he is promoting. That speaks a lot to the team behind the scenes involved in the writing and consulting (and marketing) process of the 2023 historical film.
The timeline of when these comments popped up is also interesting. While they do coincide with the release of the trailer post KPWT Bangkok, most likely what's happening during this time period is that BOC and more specifically Mile is shopping for sponsors to the project.
Think about Mile speaking about Thailand soft power to an audience of mostly older businesspeople at the mother's day event -- what would the purpose be except an ask for partnership on a project that he is on, which can become a vehicle for Thai products both domestically and globally? Look at the timing of the announcement of the Srichand partnership (end of August), and how successfully that broken the brand into the lucrative Chinese market, moving millions of THB worth of product for a brand that had struggled to get any traction previously. While Srichand's focus is currently on China, working with a Thai beauty brand for a film where the trailer highlighted many historical makeup elements is an actually ideal brand partnership and project alignment.
(Sadly for us, I don't think the film will be the second longest bread commercial in existence. But based on the Farmhouse CEO's comments, I would be unsurprised if they signed on to support the film project too. Ancient Thai bread I guess *jazz hands*)
In Conclusion
MileApo's soft power talking point was an intentional move specifically to shop the film project around for sponsors. The Srichand partnership proved MA-as-a-brand's ability to move product in a lucrative, hard-to-crack foreign market, though Srichand (and Giffarine) as brands aren't necessarily able to stand in the market independently as of yet. Their past brand partnerships' success simultaneously showed how lucrative it is to book MA for a product domestically. I'm sure we'll see a slew of new interesting sponsors and brand partnerships this year. This is only the beginning of MA's power as a cultural brand domestically and internationally.
Mile and Apo have also expressed their pride in the past in being cultural ambassadors of Thailand, both at the RSIFF and when speaking about engaging tourists who are visiting Thailand. Their praise of Thai products (for example, the artistry of Thai silk in the Vogue Th Gala interview) and their active choice to work with mostly Thai brands speaks to their values as businessmen who genuinely want to uplift Thailand's influence in the global market.
That being said, the Thai cultural ministry cannot rely on a single cultural emissary to advance its soft power agenda globally, and as of right now, despite ...some attempts, a cohesive government strategy around soft power does not exist.
MileApo have demostrated their brand has strong impact, and that they can influence purchase behavior internationally (e.g., KPWT ticket sales, Srichand) in ways many Thai media figures have not been able to as of yet. But they are not formally tied to the Thai government, nor should the government intervene and attempt to direct artistic expression.
Culture is one aspect of soft power, and political/humanitarian expression is another major component that advances an international soft power agenda. There are already articles discussing Thailand's problems of political corruption and self/journalistic censorship due to political conditions that prevent full freedom of expression. But that's the government's problem to address that. There is a lot of unharvested potential in multiple realms.
This essay is not about that though. I'm just a fan.
Can it be December 2023 yet 🥺
Additional notes that don't fit into the essay under the cut:
(1) There was a lot of fandom hand-wringing in August and September about Apo publicly having working dinners with Pond over the film project. Let's not forget Mile is someone who cares deeply about the art he makes, and he and Apo both have said multiple times they talk almost nightly about their artistic intent. If Mile talks to Apo and Apo was talking to Pond, why would Mile, a person who cares deeply about art, not be talking to Pond in pre-production? Obviously the answer is a division of labor in the relationship: Mile was working on funding which is just as important, and Mile also needs to sleep and rest and not work. There wouldn't be anyone else he would trust to convey his artistic intent to the director except for Apo. True power couple behavior right there.
(2) * everyday I go feral over baby chaebol CEO Mile. If someone made a kdrama about a handsome chaebol baby who was a CEO but also an actor and model who met his soulmate in university but it was a missed connection and then the soulmate went on to become a famous actor/model who quit because of bullying, but then they met again when the baby chaebol WHO IS STILL A CEO BUT ALSO AN ACTOR met at an audition for a drama... *foams at mouth* I would call this show bizarre, nonsensical and incoherent, and yet HERE WE ARE IN REAL LIFE. The jetsetting supermodel with wealthy CEO part of reality which is now bending around MileApo so they can live their wattpad fanfic life. What the hell am I looking at, I ask myself every day.
(3) ** this statement does not include billionaires like Elon Musk or Jeff Bezos whose net worth exceeds those of small and mid-sized countries. Per today's estimate, ~50 people/families have more wealth than 90 of 190 countries. If your net worth can run the economy of half the countries in the world, then your wealth/resources hoarding behavior can control what the media says and influence otherwise free and fair elections.
Once again, Some of you need some contextualization of how comfortably wealthy vs. billionaire resource-hoarding rich looks like.

Both Kinn and Porsche know that Korn is lying - "I'm always here for you", a meta™
Korn thinks he's won but he has just orchestrated his own downfall. Take this line:
Tumblr media
It's a weird thing to say at the moment. It does not relate in any way to the conversation taking place, and even putting it in the context of Kinn trying to calm Porsche down, more direct forms of reassurance would have worked better, such as "I love you" or anything to further convince Porsche that Korn is telling the truth. Still, Kinn chooses these exact words, so he was either:
knowingly manipulating Porsche because, guilty or not, Korn is just too powerful for Porsche to take on on his own, even holding him at gunpoint. But again, were this the case, there are more effective ways for Kinn to persuade him.
codespeaking with Porsche the only way he can in front of his father, by referring to something only the two of them know, that is to say, their conversation in ep 13, when Kinn promised Porsche he would always be there to help him find the answers he seeks. I think this is what is going on here.
After all the back and forth between Korn's and Gun's versions, plus the way his father killed Gun before he was done speaking, Kinn can't not be aware of how just how deep Korn's manipulations run, but he also knows he can't just kill his father with zero repercussions without taking his power first (see: mafia council being reluctant to accept Kinn as Korn's temporary stand-in).
Kinn is trying to make Porsche see all this the best way he can: by recalling their last honest conversation before sh*t hit the fan, simultaneously answering Porsche's vow with one of his own. "I am on YOUR side" says Porsche, "I'm always here for YOU" Kinn says back, meaning I know there is something going on and I will look for answers for you just like I promised, we are on each other's side and we know it, but now it's not the time.
And I just LOVE that most of the converstion is taking place in silence, through an exchange of looks.
Right after Porsche asks/shouts "Where is the truth?" Kinn answers him by looking at him. Apo and Mile do a great job in showing us that a whole converstion is taking place between them, one only they are privy to.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I love Porsche's body language in this scene. He's trembling and uncertain, and you can see him frowning in confusion as Kinn steps in front of his father. "Don't you see he's lying? Aren't you on my side?" he seems to say, and then his expression slowly relaxes as he understands what Kinn is trying to tell him.
The show told us over and over again (more or less expicitly, depending on the case) that the central issue of their relationship is trust, that they need to learn and trust one another, and that it is in that trust that their strength lies.
With this exchange, the narrative gets to the final solution to this issue: Kinn and Porsche are putting complete and implicit trust in each other, and each other only, against the world. And they're the only ones to know this, too.

Anatomy of a Soft Cliff-hanger - The Genius of Alchemy of Souls' Season 1 Ending
[A case study of film-making techniques]
Cliff-hangers have been a prominent plot device of all sorts story-telling medium since... well....since humans have been telling stories, Although the use of the term "cliff-hanger" has been attributed to late 19th century, the concept itself has always existed. If you have been paying attention to the how television is being produced in the last couple of decades, you will notice a rise in one particular type of cliff-hangers: the unconfirmed death. This is a subset of a larger group of cliff-hangers, that everyone likes to call - An Unanswered Question.
A popular example of this is Jon Snow's death in Game Thrones Season 5, finale. In recent years consistently this plot device been dangled in front of audiences in a way that provokes emotional investment in a particular character's (or even the actor's, which is a whole other discussion) fate rather than any investment in the entire narrative of the story.
Tumblr media
Jon Snow's death was a hard cliff-hanger where an end of an episode or a season is always at an extreme climactic high, with a clear cut, specific question for the audiences to be emotionally invested in: Will Jon Snow live? This isn't a bad thing in and on itself, but it does get boring after a while. Alchemy of Souls, on the other hand ended its first Season on a soft cliff-hanger.
Allow me to explain.
The ending was high on emotions, actions and drastic change in character dynamics, everything you would expect from a season end cliff-hanger but if this show was directed like Game of Thrones, it would probably end on this scene:
Tumblr media
With Jang Uk dead, Naksu/MuDeok on the run, Jin ChoYeon hunting her and all of Songrim grieving for Jang Uk's death. The showrunners would have left it at that and the major question for the audiences to ponder would have been: Will Jang Uk live? But the show decided to take a different, and in my opinion a cleverer, path. They let the narrative move beyond the absolute climactic high to a sort of an emotional plateau, from a point where it would have been a hard cliff-hanger to a soft cliff-hanger.
There is no more question of whether or not Jang Uk will live, because they already showed us that he survived. There is no question of whether Naksu will live or not because they showed us two weird women saving her from drowning as well. We know all the players in the game, we know where everyone is, emotionally and physically. We could also guess at almost everyone's motivations and goals at this point. The board is set, the story is in full motion. There are no more specific or narrow questions for the audiences to wonder about, only abstract ones, primary of which is: What happens now? Which, in case you hadn't noticed, is a much harder question to answer simply because of how broad its scope is, and therefore, also a very fun one.
A soft cliff-hanger allows the audiences to indulge in rich meta analysis and theories which are wide in variety. The anticipation is built not through shock but through indulging in genuine wonder and curiosity. A soft cliff-hanger also allows for the showrunners the opportunity to softly subvert audience expectations, again not through cheap plot twists but through intelligent and detailed plot progression.
Its not a perfect show. The world building is all over the place, the magic system makes no sense, etc. But despite all its flaws, Alchemy of Souls delivered a solidly intriguing ending with little to no gimmicks and that is its genius. I cannot wait for Season 2.

Turtles Catches Up With Old GMMTV: Secret Crush On You (SCOY) Edition
[What’s going on here? After joining Tumblr and discovering Thai BLs through KinnPorsche in 2022, I began watching GMMTV’s new offerings -- and realized that I had a lot of history to catch up on, to appreciate the more recent works that I was delving into. From tropes to BL frameworks, what we’re watching now hails from somewhere, and I’m learning about Thai BL's history through what I’m calling the Old GMMTV Challenge (OGMMTVC). Starting with recommendations from @absolutebl on their post regarding how GMMTV is correcting for its mistakes with its shows today, I’ve made an expansive list to get me through a condensed history of essential/classic/significant Thai BLs produced by GMMTV and many other BL studios. My watchlist, pasted below, lists what I’ve watched and what’s upcoming, along with the reviews I’ve written so far. Today, I offer my thoughts on the importance of Saint Suppapong's and Cheewin Thanamin's Secret Crush on You in the annals of Thai BL history.]
I offer a very hearty THANK YOU to my dear friends @lurkingshan and @bengiyo for reviewing this draft before publication!
Well! A VERY belated happy new year from the OGMMTVC shores! I have allowed myself a lengthy onboarding back to the pattern of watching older Thai BLs due to many life circumstances around the 2023 holidays.
But I do still stay on my grind: while I was slowly watching and re-watching SCOY over the last month, I've added two current shows to the list, which I'll explain about later, and I've also taken up reading an incredibly important book to this project, Dr. Thomas Baudinette's ethnographic study, Boys Love Media in Thailand, which is giving me tremendous insight and history into the development of the Thai BL genre from direct reporting in Asia. In other words, the OGMMTVC project is still cooking along -- I'll plan to post about the book when my current watchlist is at a pause, while current shows on the list are airing.
All that being said, I'm here today to report on my watch of 2022's Secret Crush on You. Here's a little outline to keep me organized:
1) A quick reminder of how SCOY got on the OGMMTVC list, 2) A thematic hit list of why SCOY belongs on the list, and why it's so important for the history of Thai BL, and 3) A few personal takes on the show.
SCOY got on the OGMMTVC list way back in May 2023, in the comments of my glowing review of the second season of Make It Right, suggested by @absolutebl Sensei themself. SCOY is directed by Cheewin Thanamin, who had co-directed MIR and MIR2 along with New Siwaj. (He is also, famously AND infamously, the director of the recent shows Playboyy and Middleman's Love, as well as many other shows, including YYY, Why R U, and more.)
At the time of my watch of MIR2, I reveled in the fabulous endings of TeeFuse and FrameBook, the holistically loving and embracing relationships of those two couples, who were fearlessly and openly queer and committed to each other; and I compared those endings to that of another fabulous Cheewin show, 2023's Bed Friend, which also ended glowingly, after a hell of a traumatic journey, for the dear mains, KingUea.
SCOY, from a growth perspective, fits between the high school world of MIR and the working adult world of Bed Friend, showcasing Toh, the stalker-shy university junior outcast; Nuea, the popular, athletic, and gorgeous university senior, and their respective groups of friends, who, to a tee, end up with each other. In the comments of my MIR2 review, @absolutebl wrote,
"...there is a case to be made that Cheewin is having a conversation with us[,] the culmination of which is actually SCOY. It feels like everything in his career was leading to that show[.]"
I believe this is absolutely right. While the public commentary on SCOY was that the first few episodes would be hard to digest -- for me, it took until episode *9* to feel comfortable enough to ride the SCOY train -- the amount of internal and external-to-BL themes that SCOY carries within it marks it as an incredibly important show for the annals of Thai BL history.
I also want to note that, after SCOY, Cheewin's War of Y also airs in 2022, as a macro commentary on the BL industry. Without having seen War of Y yet -- I think it makes sense, and is quite fitting, that there may be similar themes between these two shows as to what SCOY was addressing by way of personal and industry-related psychologies.
I'll get into those themes in a second, but as so many of you know as well: this was also the first production for Saint Suppapong's agency, Idol Factory, featuring (for 2022) a slate of incredible new QL actors and actresses who have already made a fast and deep impact on the genre (...fast and deep impact huh huh ANYWAY).
Putting ourselves into Saint's shoes -- a man well familiar with the pitfalls of the BL industry, vis à vis his associations with his previous PerthSaint and ZeeSaint ships -- I can make a safe assumption that he approached the production of SCOY with the intent to make a groundbreaking show, and to approach the fan service side of the BL industry with as much consciousness for his actors as possible. While I'm not watching Idol Factory's latest show, The Sign, I am noting that The Sign's two stars, Billy Patchanon (of SCOY) and Babe Tanatat are very good at their fan service offerings. (Heng in this video, omg.) But all that being said, the unfortunate incident last year of the untimely revelation of Seng Wichai's and Freen Sarocha's relationship indicates that Idol Factory is also not immune to the controversies and pitfalls of the BL and shipping industries.
What I particularly loved about SCOY -- and why I agree with @absolutebl and many BL fandom veterans that it belongs on the OGMMTVC list -- is that this show unabashedly insisted that all people are people, all humans are equitably humans, and all humans deserve the same emotional and social respect as anyone else. It punched social expectations of the "winners" and "losers" down to the ground to offer nuanced narratives of most of its characters.
We see Toh (Seng Wichai) and his group of friends repeatedly put down and bullied. We see Toh and Jao kicked to the ground for their looks and presentations. We see popular Nuea (Billy) and Sky (Heng Asavarid) suffering from jealousy, insecurity, unrequited love and desire. We see Nuea and Sky objectified. We see Daisy question themself for their femme identity, and we see Daisy's group of friends become so moved and emotional about this change as to both uplift Daisy's preferences and to support them in whatever changes they want to make.
We also see -- for only the second time on the OGMMTVC list, and surely in the biggest BL up til 2022 -- a prominent femme side character in Daisy, one who is very much pursued by a cis male suitor in Touch. (The first time we see such a prominent femme character on the OGMMTVC syllabus is, again, in Cheewin's Make It Right 2, in the character of Yok, who was very out and very gay throughout that season.)
I'm going to examine this more in just a bit, but I also want to note, in a fabulous conversation I had with @bengiyo about SCOY, that this show also somewhat upends social expectations of who exactly gets bullied in a "typical" school setting. We do very much see Toh and his friend group get attacked. We see that friend group come together in support of each other. But we also see them very much accepted, as they are, by the older, more popular friend group.
There are many more examples of these themes, but in any case:
These were nuanced, layered, and sophisticated depictions of humanity, all for a show within the BL genre that had started its journey, way back in 2014, in demanding clear seme/uke dynamics and male/female characteristic assumptions between main couples. SCOY clearly took great pains to examine and upend these assumptions. In particular, the hot tub conversation in episode 9 had me going wild; a conversation that has become legendary as it was the first time (and not the last!) that a character of Billy Patchanon's stated that he was verse:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
By the time we get to 2022, I love what this conversation signifies for Thai BL. From SOTUS's Kongpob saying that he'll make Arthit his wife; to Pat clarifying to BOTH Pran AND Phupha, "I'm not your wife" -- and, now in SCOY, to Nuea being like, "oh, roles? Yeah, whateves, I'm down," is such a refreshing spin to the conversation about the demands that the genre, AND society, place on hulking cis-presenting men like Nuea/Billy.
Of course, the biggest upending to any assumptions that viewers (including myself) may have had about the dynamics between the two main couples of NueaToh and SkyJao was in seeing how deeply insecure both Nuea and Sky were of the stability of their relationships with their boyfriends in Toh and Jao. Nuea and Sky both recognized that it was literally society itself -- and the very deep internal impacts that society could have on the psyches of the nerdy Toh and Jao -- that could threaten the sanctity of Nuea's and Sky's relationships.
Nuea and Sky weren't relying or assuming on their good looks or popularity ranks to win Toh and Jao over. Nuea and Sky were very much in love with these two men, and both wanted to have holistically complete and committed relationships with their boyfriends. And Nuea and Sky WORKED for these relationships, and feared the worst, often, if an internal obstacle (like Jao's insecurity) or external obstacle (like the girls in pursuit of Nuea) got in their way.
@bengiyo, in reference to my conversation with him earlier, mentioned a social shade to all of this that I found fascinating. He noted that this show did NOT interrogate the "weirdness" of Toh and his friend group. I'm actually going to criticize that just a touch in a bit, because I would have liked more background context into Toh, myself. However, Ben makes an important point about this, because he noted to me that majority society WOULD interrogate the origins of Toh's "weirdness" -- and would NOT interrogate the popularity, good looks, and success of Nuea and his group, because majority society would well assume that Nuea and his group are... "normal."
I find these instinctual inclinations to be FASCINATING to ponder, and I really think SCOY did a wonderful job in allowing us as viewers an "in" to a loving alternate reality that those who are considered "weird" in this world deserve a fair and equitable shot at love and acceptance from all corners. Ben noted for me that MUCH more often in majority society, that being queer makes someone vastly unpopular. (Ben also noted for me that what SCOY posits for Nuea and Sky by way of their queer presentations against their popular standings would likely have led to them being ostracized in real life.)
I want to note that this loving alternate reality for the unpopular is almost exactly similar to another fictional environment created by Cheewin in Make It Right -- which prompted an early and memorable conversation between Ben and me early in this project. (Thank you so much to @bengiyo for giving me time and space to read and comment on this SCOY piece.)
I want to posit -- again, without having seen War of Y -- that all of this is fascinating territory for Idol Factory, in its first show, to tread by way of humanizing IF's gloriously good-looking talent in Billy, Heng, and others. I'll know more by way of comparison when I actually watch War of Y -- but I think SCOY does a FABULOUS job in slowly leading viewers to contemplate our assumptions about how "easy" it might be to be a good-looking and/or athletic person in society. Insecurity and instability are common characteristics among all of us. SCOY very decidedly skewers any assumptions that viewers, and society, may have about the "transcendent" nature of the show's fictional "celebrities" to bring all of its characters down to a more common and equitable human level.
By a long shot, these themes are the ones that I loved absolutely the most about SCOY. I have a few personal takes on the show that I'll share in just a moment, but one more shout of celebration that I'd like to offer to SCOY is the following:
Of all the excellent acting in this show -- from Billy, to Heng, to the utterly DELIGHTFUL Looknam Orntara as Som, to the fabulous Surprise Pittikorn as a conflicted and insecure Jao -- let me offer all the flowers to
Seng Wichai, who had me CRINGING, OMG, *CRINGING*, throughout most of SCOY.
I hope this man won AWARDS for this role. All of my feelings towards the character of Toh aside -- Seng Wichai absolutely BODIED this role. I was SQUIRMING during the first three quarters of this series. God, he NAILED every last characteristic that would make a person like Toh so interpretively painful and pitiful. That Seng left Idol Factory last year, before his relationship with Freen was exposed, is, I think, a huge loss for IF. I know War of Y is chaotic, but I actually can't wait to watch it simply to see another side of Seng's acting.
For Seng's Toh to be pursued so intensely by Nuea -- and for Toh to be so Toh throughout that pursuit -- I truly can't think of a past BL actor from the past OGMMTVC dramas that could have done a better and more nuanced job than Seng Wichai to just remain so COMMITTED to Toh's modus operandi of stalking and collecting, especially so DEEP into the 14-episode run.
I will admire Seng's performance endlessly. My very own personal take on SCOY -- which I do not want to detract from its importance in the BL genre annals -- was that I think some of Cheewin's typical chaotic flourishes did not quite comport with the complicated emotionality that SCOY otherwise served.
At the end of the series, we meet Toh's parents in rural Suphanburi -- but we don't get a sense throughout the series of why Toh decides to pursue Nuea only from afar, in stalker-like actions, for so very long. Again, this stalker behavior is only presented as an MO -- and as @bengiyo noted to me, that was likely on purpose, as a means of showing that Toh's friend group would be accepting of each other NO MATTER their unique characteristics.
We also have to wait a VERY long time in the series for Toh to be held accountable for his stalking actions, as he even continues to collect items well into his relationship with Nuea. The flip side of this is an empathic one -- he's collecting the items out of an assumption, on his end, that his relationship with Nuea WILL end. However, it's made clear that Toh had no intention to ever tell Nuea of this side of Toh's behavior.
There were other moments in the show that tonally confused me, particularly in episode 5, the first time that the group goes to the beach, where Toh is in the hotel room with Nuea for the first time, and is both overtly confident that he might get it on with Nuea, but also seems reluctant to actually pursue it once Nuea starts offering hints. I worked this out with @lurkingshan (thank you, friend!) that Toh was demonstrating a brave face and fantasy to start, but was surprised when Nuea actually reciprocated the consideration. This happened a couple of times throughout the show, and Shan's assessment makes absolute sense -- I think I could have used some language clarity around those scenes myself, particularly when Toh was talking postgame with his friends after those moments, that he was surprised by Nuea's acceptance. But, @lurkingshan -- your assessment of the pattern holds, and I understand it.
Once I finished the series, I read @absolutebl's 2022 review of SCOY, and ABL -- I totally understand your perspective. I get the pull between adoration and cringe for this show. A stalker premise is HEAVY. It didn't help, in that heaviness, to have no past context to Toh's behavior, coupled with Seng's incredible cringy performance.
If another director without as many chaotic tendencies could have directed this show -- I think we would have gotten a more complete and contextual emotionality to the show that would have helped Toh's and Nuea's relationship be portrayed as fully full-circle.
I think this is enough of a quibble that'll keep me from easily rewatching SCOY. But, towards the end of the series (@twig-tea, YOU WERE RIGHT!) -- especially from episode 9 onwards -- I felt that I finally and truly understood where this show was going, and what it was about, and I felt endeared to it.
I think many in the fandom will agree that SkyJao was actually the couple that interpreted, much more clearly, the impact of social pressures and insecurities on a relationship, and for that, I will forever shout
SKYJAO! SKYJAO! SKYJAO!
as one of my absolute favorite side pairings of all time.
SCOY was a hard watch for me because of the interruptions of the holidays, of life, and because I've gotten a little less patient with Cheewin's chaos (...I dropped Playboyy, omg, I have to admit), despite my utter admiration for his work on Make It Right and Bed Friend.
But the difficulties I had in watching it should not take away from honoring this show as a hell of an important one. It makes me admire Saint Suppapong to no end for spending his own damn money towards the pursuit of better BLs. And the acting in SCOY was truly FANTASTIC. Despite my own personal reservations, I cannot recommend SCOY highly enough -- because watching it, and enjoying it, is truly a perfect demarcation to understand how far Thai BLs had gotten to its airing moment in 2022.
[OKAY! As I mentioned above, this project has gotten even richer with the addition of my current reading of Dr. Thomas Baudinette's Boys Love Media in Thailand -- I look forward to offering my thoughts on that book after my watch project is over.
I have added a few shows to the watchlist! The recently-aired Last Twilight makes it on as a show that centered disability vis à vis BL for the first time, and Cherry Magic Thailand makes it on as Thailand's first major adaptation of a Japanese manga and dorama. I've also added 23.5, GMMTV's first GL, to the list, although the premiere date continues to be up in the air for that show.
AS WELL! An actual Japanese BL makes it on the list, ha ha! I'm obsessed with this because I'm learning from Baudinette about the Japanese roots of Thai BL. I am in LOVE with Ossan's Love Returns, and it happily features a cameo by none other than Loong Jim and Wen, who hilariously (AND SMARTLY, go get yer money, guys) franchised Moonlight Chicken to Japan. Earth Pirapat and Mix Sahaphap make the most adorable cameo, and they will be inhabiting Haruta's and Maki's roles when the Thai version of Ossan's Love starts filming later this year.
FINALLY! My own personally long-awaited KinnPorsche (OOOO-WEEEEE!) rewatch is up next, but I'm taking a beat to catch up on Cooking Crush. I can't wait for my late-night liveblogs on KP, though -- they're coming soon!
Here's the status of the list -- as always, Tumblr's web editor is NOT nice to this list, so please mosey over to this link for your very latest updates on the project!

A little bit about friendship in KinnPorsche and KimChay
But mainly about KimChay.
KP presents us not only with many excellent sets of brothers and lovers, but friends too.
In the center of attention of course are these four:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I hope your ass was hurting big time, Time
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tae and Time, Kinn's childhood friends, and Jom and Tem, Porsche's old friends.
We see a very good and healthy thing amongst others: Kinn' and Porsche's friends become aquainted with each other. Yes, Jom and Tem don't know the whole truth, but they are bonding anyway (especially Tem, ahem).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Jom is having a dance-off with THE Khun Tankhun by the way!
Also Yok is connecting everyone and is a good friend to Porsche.
Now I want you to look at this:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I believe that here we have something like that too, but cut extremely short as everything about KimChay is.
I start with this guy:
Tumblr media
First of all I couldn't even find the name of the actor. Like he doesn't exist at all. IMDB, BL fandom, he is nowhere to be seen. It's a pity, he is quite charismatic. I don't know what to call him. A Guy? ugh.
I believe that he is somewhat a friend to Kim. He is friendly and freely nudges Kim. (One simply does not nudge Kimhant Theerapanyakul, but that is obviously not the case)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(btw that's the moment Kim saw Chay for the first time and stopped functioning)
Chay got Kim's address from the Guy and while I don't think he really hang out at Kim's appartment, I don't think he have his address just because he is clearly on some social duty in uni either. I think he could have went there for study-related questions or something (as Kim is missing many of his classes like Porsche does, he must have maaany study-related questions and the Guy seems the type to know everything useful). The Guy also somewhat aware of where Kim generally is. I am sure he told Chay that Kim is spending a lot of time in the studio where Chay cornered Kim after his exam. Maybe Kim and the Guy jammed there one time or other.
They obviously not close - the Guy told Kim about Chay only when Kim went to classes, so they aren't talking often, but they obviousy do.
Both sets of friends I started this with told their pining fellow that they are see through him and they see lovesickness. Tae and Time talked to Kinn about Porsche after he was shot, and Jom and Tem talked to Porsche about Kinn before the kidnapping. They told them that they know each other for too long to not notice things.
Well, the Guy apparently noticed that Kim likes Chay.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
While Kim stepped behind him with that innocent look "That's your event, I'm just a guest, so it's your problem", and the Guy struggled with the issue of the lack of t-shirts, he also saw all this disaster exchange. And he nudged Kim again afterwards, smiling in that trademark smile show hosts and politicians have narrowly escaping a fiasco.
So he knows some Kimese. That can't be achieved involuntary. The guy is actively interested in Kim albeit not that much. They could be closer I guess probably if Kim was more willing.
Kim is able to make friends and he doesn't nesessarily antagonise people. Dare I say he likes to be friendly. He probably easily reaches his limit (his tower walls are too close to the patch of his enchanted forest where people are allowed to wander), but social interactions of a media person have those limits anyway.
Now to Chay's friend, Ohm.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ohm is very supportive: he takes Chay by the shoulders and drags him over to where Kim and the Guy stand, he knows (as Tae and Time, Jom and Tem) that Chay is heartbroken, he dyes his hair, he goes with him to the bar...
But Chay still doesn't answer him, when he's making a gift to Kim.
More importantly, Ohm doesn't know who Wik is! So Ohm probably never been to Chay's room. They probably hung out in the living room. Porsche is often absent so I don't think it's a problem. And Wik's pictures aren't concealed as the certain murder board, so no, Chay prefers to keep his room to himself, only Porsche is allowed inside.
Tumblr media
Chay also hasn't told Ohm about Wik at all. Wik is obviously precious to Chay, but I think it is another sign of Chay's reservedness which isn't very apparent on the first sight.
All in all, everyone needs a good friend or two at least. They will be hard to gain for Chay postcanon, but maybe when it will be in the happy end territory, he and Kim could have as many friends as they want and have them know each other and tease them mercilessly about their endless flow of love songs in each other's names.
I hc them as musicians and they will all jam together! =3 I like the guy who won the first t-shirt. The attitude! I think he will certainly pass the exams (so he will be studying alongside Chay) and probably can take mafia-related side of KimChay.

Pit Babe ep 6 initial reaction
So I recently got back from a trip to Korea and Japan in January (which is why I’m watching everything late cause couldn’t watch it there). Hardcore studied Japanese for 7 years Koran for 3 years. Can read to a decent level in both. Now started my Thai Bl stuff? Maybe 2 years ago when I watched KinnPorsche. I have not actively tried to learn Thai. So why is my auditory understanding of Thai at the same level as Korean. I keep hearing changes from the subs on iqiyi. This is why when I was in Korea and Japan I kept accidentally speaking Thai? 😭😭 anyways onto the photo review.
Tumblr media
Is it crazy babe is that good without his abilities? As far as I can tell he hasn’t been using his skill since he started seeing Charlie. Also feel like this is great meme potential.
Tumblr media
Very very very harsh Alan. He doesn’t really give Dean any advice on achieving his goals. Also I think Dean was angry when he was racing Babe and Charlie. Seems like if Alan had more practice maybe he’d feel more comfortable
Tumblr media
Way is moving through the stages of grief. Acceptance of the enemy. Way kept treating Charlie like he was replaceable. Also babe was looking hella tiny in this scene. Specifically when he was going down the stairs
Tumblr media
Couple things that annoy me about this scene.
1. Jeff doesn’t eat or drink. Look at that milk shake and cake. Come on a tiny nibble? It’s good for the baby.
2. Love Actually in my opinion is one of the weakest romance films of all time. It’s sad the porn couple Martin Freeman and Johanna Page were the sweetest one. But the paper holding scene I found fucking creepy? Her husband kids etc are inside and that’s why the guy is doing the paper signs. Romantic? No. Traumatizing kids on Christmas? Yes.
3. Is Jeff a Uni student? Because… I think Way said he’s known Babe for 7 or 10 years. Which means Alan has to be in his 30s and Babe Way are 25 or 28? Idk concerning age diff at least for Jeff and Alan. Also Alan has a bad case of No means No, but I guess very abo.
Tumblr media
Babe’s actor is so Beautiful and convincing at being in love with Charlie. He’s so soft and cute. However suggesting babies is fucking weird Charlie. Maybe it’s cause I don’t want any but seems a bit strange but no kink shaming babe and Charlie can have a mommy kink if they want.
Tumblr media
“Why don’t we do it in the road?” By The Beatles
I think I’m just too American South brained because my reaction to this is it’s not cute. A rural road would definitely have road kill splatters and broken glass. Also I’d be worried someone would come out of their house and shoot me to death and that’s before they find out I’m of the LGBT+ variation of human.
Tumblr media
I actually think the one I like is called Sonic. Oddly not the one who wears blue? But anyways style icon legend got checked by Dean for doing work? They didn’t seem to be doing the social media thing but helping in the garage so not fair he is taking his frustrations out on them. Also Sonic and North should have an opinion on Charlie joining. Wish we could know if they are friendly with Charlie or not. We do see them also at the party but Charlie is so babe focused I guess they don’t exist but they should be closer to his age.
Tumblr media
Awwww Babe is taking the boyfriend title seriously trying to look out for Jeff now. But Jeff sees some bad shit but he just doesn’t share it with us. What’s Charlie’s ability? I guess something with his mouth and that’s why he can by pass Babe’s no’s
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Babe was a bit heartless to Way. I mean Way made it clear what kind of simp he was for Babe. I get that Way was Babe’s first friend and he’s very attached to Way for that reason but Babe does have Alan too. I feel like when Way asked for Babe’s necklace then Babe should have said hey just so we clear besties. But then again idk how socialized Babe was at that point.

When Chay removes his headphones, the sound of gunshots and grunting men seizes his ears. When he turns around, a big angry man is lunging at him. Chay screams, tries to run, but he’s grabbed by his wrists and his arms are twisted behind him. His head bangs the corner of the table as he’s shoved to the floor, the impact ripping the air from his lungs. He writhes under the man’s weight but it does nothing. Terror pounds through him as a cloth is pressed against his mouth. Tears prick his eyes. He wants his brother. He wants…
Not again. Please, please not this again…!
A shot rings out. The man falls over off of him, bellowing swears and clutching his bleeding arm.
“Ngh…” Chay’s head throbs. Everything’s spinning. He struggles to sit up, tries not to throw up. He manages to look over his shoulder, and a trembling breath leaves him.
Kim has the man on the ground at gunpoint. One glance at Chay, one look at the massive bleeding cut on his forehead, and Kim’s eyes blacken. He drags the man up by his throat, fingernails drawing blood.
“You fucking bastard,” Kim snarls. The man grabs at Kim’s hand but he doesn’t budge. Kim digs the barrel of his gun into his purpling face, then angles it down above his leg. A bullet rips into his thigh and the man heaves and sputters in agony, eyes ballooning from their sockets.
“K-Kim…,” Chay whimpers, lifting a hand. Kim turns his head, and the look in his eyes is nothing short of bone-chilling. “Please, don’t…”
Kim stares at him for several seconds. Then he turns his attention back to the suffocating thug. Kim releases his throat and he crumples to the ground in a violently coughing heap. Not a second later, the man bellows like a crazed bull and pulls out a knife before throwing himself at Kim.
“NO!” Chay shouts.
But Kim easily sidesteps him, slams his foot down on the man’s back, and shoots him in the back of the head. Chay covers his mouth at the sight, hyperventilating into his hands. He watches blood pool beneath the man’s head, watches it leak across the floor. Then Chay’s eyes go to the bar and he catches what looks to be more lifeless bodies littered about. He looks at Kim, whose face and white shirt are blood splattered. Chay’s teeth start to chatter and he twists away from the scene, knees to his chest, arms around his head, shivering like the world’s turned to frost.
“Porchay.” Kim rushes to his side. His chest stings when Chay flinches away from his touch. “It’s me. It’s just me.” Kim tries again, gently brushing his fingers over Chay’s hand. He’s shaking so badly and it kills him. “Chay, come on. You know I’d never hurt you.”
Chay’s voice is soft and broken. “Y-You…all those g-guys you–”
“I know. But I had to.” Kim takes a breath. “I’m sorry. I didn’t want you to see this.” He’s careful as he reaches out with both hands to hold Chay’s face, tenderly turning him to look. Kim reigns in his rage. “You’re bleeding a lot.”
Kim coaxes Chay to stand and guides him further back into the club, away from the carnage. He goes back to the bar and checks under the counter, finding a clean rag and a small first-aid kit that only has antiseptic wipes and a single pack of bandages, then promptly returns to Chay. Chay’s eyes remain downcast, dim with shock. Kim gently takes his chin and tilts his face towards him before proceeding to clean him up. He wipes blood off of Chay’s eyebrow, his nose, his cheek. He dabs the cut then goes back over it with a wipe, finishing by applying the largest bandage he can find and then some. He’ll find something better once they’re out of here.
And all the while, Kim talks. He started shooting guns when he was six. He had to learn how to fight for his life at seven. His first kill was when he was twelve. All the men he’d witnessed being tortured, brutalized, beaten to death. All the despair, hopelessness, desperation, the pleas for mercy. Kim explains everything.
How he’d left home at the age of sixteen to escape from the hell he’d been born into. How he still chose to remain in contact with that world despite that, because he couldn’t forget about his family. How Tankhun had bought him a ukulele when he was a toddler so he’d stop crying. How Kinn used to sing to him when he couldn’t sleep. How music was his salvation.
How one day, he saw a really cute fan in the crowd who gave three correct answers to a single question about his music videos. How he could never forget his smile.
“I thought it was nice,” Kim says after applying one more bandage. Then his hands fall into his lap. “I was…kind of excited. That maybe I’d see you on campus.”
Chay still isn’t looking at him, but he’s been listening. His eyes become a little clearer.
Kim sighs then continues, “I was suspicious of this guy, Porsche, who’d been assigned to be my brother’s bodyguard for no real reason. I needed to know who he was, if he was a threat. If he’d fooled my father, if he was hiding something. So…” He clears his throat. “So it’s true. The reason I first reached out to you. But what I didn’t expect was…”
Now Chay looks at him, their eyes meeting. They hold each other’s gaze for a long moment.
“What…did you not expect?” Chay asks quietly, a tinge of hope blending with the hurt.
At first, Kim can’t find words. He’s too busy admiring how the rich golden sheen of the setting sun streams into the bar and hits Chay just right, dusting his hair, putting a sparkle in his lovely brown eyes, a soft glow upon his warm skin, a shine on his perfect lips. Kim takes it all in, and wonders how Chay is still bothering to sit here with someone like him.
“It’s true that I had ulterior motives,” Kim says. “But what I felt…that was true, too. That wasn’t a lie, Chay.”
“What you…felt?”
Kim takes Chay’s shoulders and leans in, head down. “I was really happy when you said you liked me. So happy it was stupid. The time we spent together meant a lot. It meant everything . I didn’t want it to end but I knew it would eventually because that’s what always happens. Because my life is shit and people always end up getting hurt.” Kim grips Chay. “I knew that. But I’m fucking selfish. I wanted to hold on to you as long as I could.” A dry sob escapes him, one of heartache and bitterness. “The minor family’s gone to war with us. I knew they’d come for you. So I came here to protect you. I told myself I’d always protect you. Because I’m sorry. Because I like you, Chay. I like you so much it terrifies me.”
The words hang in the air. For a minute there’s only Kim and Chay’s breathing and the ambience of the closed bar.
Kim wants Chay to shove him off in disgust. He wants him to take his revenge and reject him, swear he’ll never want anything to do with him ever again. He wants Chay to laugh in his face and scorn him for being a coward, for being an idiot to think he could fix what he’d done.
But instead, soft warm hands cup his cheeks. Chay uses his sleeve to wipe some blood off Kim’s face. Kim looks at him but Chay averts his eyes. It’s different this time. This time, it’s that shyness Kim adores.
“...Thank you,” Chay says. “For um…For saving me.”
Another beat of silence.
“I’m sorry again you had to see it,” Kim says, observing Chay’s fidgeting fingers. “Are you okay?” He looks down and quietly asks, “Are you afraid of me?”
Chay takes a deep, trembling breath. After a moment, he admits, “No. I don’t think I’ll be okay for a while.”
Then he gazes at Kim. Kim, whose music had given Chay a dream. Kim, who was patient and kind. Kim, who kissed him on the cheek, whose heartbeat lulled Chay to sleep that night. Who’d held his hand and embraced him. Kim, who’d broken his heart.
Who wouldn’t let Chay take drugs while wasted around a bunch of people he barely knew. Who had tapped into the very thing he hated most about himself in order to protect him.
“But I meant it for real when I said…,” Chay takes Kim’s hands, “that I like all of your sides.”
Kim looks at Chay as a blush blooms across his face and tears fill his eyes. Through Chay’s sniffling, a small smile breaks out. Kim’s heart swells and tears of his own gather. He starts berating himself because he shouldn’t be allowed this. He shouldn’t be allowed to feel this happy . But the relieved laugh escapes him. He cradles Chay’s cheek and swipes away a tear with his thumb. His heart sings when Chay holds his wrist and nuzzles his palm.
“I’m sorry that I made you cry,” Kim says.
“It’s cool.”
“No it’s not. I won’t do it again.”
“You’re doing it now though.”
“I love you.”
Chay’s eyes widened and he goes still. He searches Kim’s eyes, finds them unwavering.
“Kim…”
“I love you, Porchay.” Kim links his fingers with Chay’s and they stand. He leans in so their foreheads touch. “Let’s get out of here.”
Something about seeing Porchay, hair wet and one of his shirts hanging off his skinny frame, sends Kim over the edge.
Without a word Kim gets up from his bed and stalks towards him, an arm wrapping around Chay’s waist to pull him close. The feeling of Chay’s thin body against him does things to Kim, and he doesn’t know what to do with himself, with Chay , that won’t be bad. So Kim buries his face into Chay’s neck but swiftly realizes that this, too, is a bad idea as the mingling scents of his body wash and Chay’s skin intoxicates him.
“K-Kim?” Chay squeaks, hands going to Kim’s shoulders. Their proximity, the feeling of Kim’s lips and breath upon his skin, makes him flush a deep red. “Um…Kim, what are you doing?”
“I’m just hugging you,” Kim says into Chay’s ear, chuckling when his blush reaches the shell. He kisses it and the kid nearly jumps. Kim snickers into his shoulder. “You’re so cute, Chay.”
“S-Stop saying, and doing, embarrassing things!” Chay yelps, pushing Kim back. They were never physical before, not like this anyway, so Chay doesn’t know what’s gotten into him. But Kim gives him a lopsided grin, his long tousled hair falling over one eye, and he somehow becomes even more handsome. Chay shakes his head. “What’s with you…”
Chay loses his words. Kim cups his cheek and leans in until their lips are a hair’s breadth apart. It’s a question, and Kim waits. Chay counts one heartbeat and answers, inching forward. They close the distance, lips meeting in their first kiss. They break apart for a second to look into each other’s eyes and process. Then they kiss again. And again, and again, and again.
Chay never so much as held a person’s hand (that wasn’t his brother’s) until he met Kim so he’s not sure what he’s doing. He just hopes Kim likes it, and Kim sure as hell does. So much so that soon he’s pressing a little harder, opening their mouths, letting his tongue brush Chay’s bottom lip. The sweet taste of him drives Kim wild.
Chay breaks away gasping for air. “Kim–”
Kim’s mouth covers Chay’s again and he spins them both around, starts walking him backward. He doesn’t allow their lips to part as they fall onto his bed, Chay laid out beneath him.
“Mmph…!” Chay goes to push Kim’s shoulders but Kim’s hands wrap around his wrists and pin them down on the bed. He gasps Kim’s name between kisses, moans softly as Kim licks into his mouth, tongue ravaging him. It’s not until Chay feels Kim’s hand slide under his shirt that he finally shouts around the kiss, “Wait!”
Kim’s hand stops immediately and he pulls back. As much as the sight of Chay under him, face flushed, breathing hard, hair a damp halo, and glossy lips swollen, turns him on, Kim doesn’t miss his discomfort. He removes his hand from under his shirt.
“Sorry,” Kim says, catching his breath. He brushes hair out of Chay’s eyes. “I won’t do anything else. Not unless you want me to.”
Chay gazes at him for a moment. Then he goes up on his elbows to give Kim a quick peck on the lips. He runs a hand through Kim’s hair, a million thoughts running through him.
“I-I…It’s not that I don’t want to,” Chay says, unable to meet Kim’s eyes. “I want to. I just…I’ve never…”
Kim wraps Chay in his arms. He kisses Chay’s neck and nuzzles his shoulder, his heart doing cartwheels. He cradles Chay close, holds him like the precious soul he is. Kim can’t fathom it, that Chay wants him to be his first. The thought almost makes Kim cry. And it also makes his body burn, deep and untamed.
“Don’t worry. I’ll take care of everything.” Kim kisses the bandages on Chay’s forehead. Chay gasps as Kim starts pulling his shirt up. It’s tossed aside and Kim takes a second to ogle Chay’s slender body. He shudders as Kim runs a hand down his chest. “It’s alright. I promise I’ll be gentle.”
The way Chay looks at him, so nervous yet so full of trust, has Kim hurrying to strip off his own shirt. Chay’s eyes glow with longing as they roam all over his body, tight and sculpted with well defined muscle.
Littered with faded scars.
Chay sits up and extends a timid hand, his fingers caressing an old cut below Kim’s collarbone. A laceration on his side. Healed gunshot and stab wounds around his shoulders, along his torso. Multiple cigarette burns. Chay chokes back tears as he thinks about everything Kim told him, what Kim had gone through his entire life. How he’d turned to music to be free from it all, to do something else, something better than what was passed down to him.
“I’m sorry,” Chay whispers.
“Hey.” Kim cups his face. “Do you remember what you said to me?” When Chay furrows his brows, he chuckles. “You know…I’ve always thought I was a pretty unlucky guy myself. But it’s like you said.” His fingertips brush beneath Chay’s eye. “Maybe all of the luck I’ve ever had was so I could be here with you.”
Chay’s eyes shimmer.
Kim smiles. “Tonight, let’s just think about us. Okay?”
Us.
Chay sobs and hugs him tight, the pair of them shivering as their bare torsos touch. Kim squeezes him back.
“Okay,” Chay sighs.
Kim claims Chay’s lips and lowers him back down, their arms still around each other. He pulls away and peppers Chay’s face with kisses, making him giggle. He kisses Chay’s lips one more time before trailing down to his neck, licking and sucking his tender nape. Chay bites his lip, muffles his gasps and moans. Kim’s strong hands leave traces of fire wherever they go as they caress Chay’s body, sliding along his sides, down his stomach, his arms. When they rub over Chay’s nipples, his cry can’t be contained. He immediately covers his mouth, face burning.
What kind of sound did I just make? Chay whines into his hands as Kim doesn’t relent in toying with him. Kim parts from Chay’s neck and kisses down from his shoulder to his chest until closing his lips around one of his nipples, punctuating with a firm suck.
“Ngahh…!” It pushes through Chay’s fingers as his back arches. Before Chay can seal his mouth again, Kim grabs his hands.
“You don’t have to be embarrassed,” Kim says. “It’s a normal reaction.”
“B-But…But–”
“You know I love it when you sing, Chay.” Kim thwarts Chay’s plan to hide by pinning his hands over his head with one hand. He brings his face close to Chay’s and a sly smile plays on his lips. “So let me hear you.”
Kim thumbs one nipple, brings his mouth down on the other, and Chay keens helplessly. The sound of his cute, sweet voice riles Kim up so much that he growls into a bite, just below Chay’s ribcage. The scrape of Kim’s teeth startles him, and he whimpers as Kim applies a little more pressure, but not enough to hurt him. Then Kim finally releases Chay’s wrists, drags his hand down his lithe arms, his neck, fondles his chest, tweaks Chay’s nipples as Kim works his way downward, and it’s like Chay’s being eaten alive. Kim dragging his tongue down his flat stomach, back up and over Chay’s nipples, then down his chest again. Leaving hungry kisses and sucking bruises into Chay’s heated skin wherever his lips pass, losing himself in the song that is Chay’s every wanting cry of pleasure. Kim closes his mouth over Chay’s hip, nibbles the skin on the delicate dip down further, stopping at the band of his pajama pants. He spies the very obvious bulge and smirks.
“Looks like you’re eager,” Kim says, nudging Chay’s arousal with his hand, to which Chay whines and throws his arms over his eyes.
“Kim!” he exclaims from the sheer embarrassment.
He takes a sharp breath when he feels Kim’s hands start pulling down the waistband, painstakingly slow. Kim watches the rapid rise and fall of Chay’s chest, how the gorgeous shade of scarlet dusting his neck and shoulders deepens, how he gasps when his hard, leaking cock is finally freed. Kim’s pupils blow wide, mouth watering at the sight. He teases the length of Chay’s cock with the tip of his tongue and Chay stifles a yell with his arm, his back arching beautifully. Kim repeats the motion, tugging Chay’s pants up and completely off as his legs bend from the stimulation. Chay whimpers at how exposed he feels and instinctively goes to cross his legs, to cover himself, but Kim doesn’t let him.
“Don’t hide from me,” Kim says. He settles himself between Chay’s legs, places a kiss on one of his knees, then on his inner thigh, pinching the soft skin with his teeth. Then he sits up to take in the view of Chay lying naked and breathless before him. Perfection. It provokes something primal, and Kim fights the raging desire to take him right there.
Chay sees Kim’s eyes, dark with lust, and trembles. He’s never felt more vulnerable, more at another’s mercy. And yet, he feels so incredibly safe, protected. Because it’s Kim leaning over him, surrounding him, touching him like he’s porcelain. Because he can feel Kim’s care, see his love crystal clear in the depths of his desire. And Kim sees it, too. Chay’s trust in him. Trust he swears on his life he’ll never break again. Trust he’ll treasure and guard until his dying breath.
Kim sticks two fingers into his mouth, gets them good and coated, before bringing them to Chay’s hole. He slots the tip of his middle finger against it and Chay yelps.
“W-What? Down there…Kim–”
“I need to prepare you,” Kim says, combing his other hand through Chay’s hair then caressing his cheek. He kisses Chay’s temple. “I’ve got you. Just breathe, okay? That’s it.”
His finger starts to breach him. Chay fists the sheets, tosses his head, gasps a string of moans as Kim pushes deeper.
“It f-feels weird…!” Chay says. “Ah…Ah! Hnngh! Mmph!”
Kim captures Chay’s lips in a desperate kiss. He works his finger deeper and deeper with light thrusts until he’s buried to the knuckle, while his other hand massages Chay’s nipples, pinching them between his digits. After several thrusts, Kim starts pushing a second finger in. Chay clings to his shoulders with a panicked gasp.
Kim licks his ear. “Shhh. You’re alright. I won’t hurt you.” The second finger eases in and Chay presses his face into Kim’s neck, a sob escaping him. “You okay? How does it feel?”
“I-I’m scared,” Chay finally manages. Kim digs and curls his long digits deep, brushing that bundle of nerves, and Chay absolutely wails . Kim bites his shoulder. “Ah! W-Wait! I c-can’t. I’m scared…I feel like I’m going crazy, Kim–Ngh! Haaah!”
“You’re not,” Kim says as he thrusts his fingers in and out. He laps at Chay’s neck, groaning at the sweetness of his skin, the saltiness of his sweat. “It’s supposed to feel like this. It’s supposed to feel good. Does it feel good, Porchay? Tell me.” Kim slides one more finger in, all three digits twisting inside him. Chay throws his head back, his cry filling the room, his body convulsing. Kim looks down to see Chay’s cock twitching, his stomach splattered white. He grabs and looks at Chay’s blissed out face, his own cock getting painfully harder by the second. “You came.”
They slot their mouths together. Chay groans into Kim’s mouth as he withdraws his fingers to hold Chay’s head with both hands, tilts him back, seeks to devour him. Once Chay is laying flat on the bed again, Kim sits up. He yanks his sweatpants and briefs down, his rock hard erection springing free, curling against his toned abs. Kim starts stroking himself, slicking his length with precum, eyes black with lust piercing Chay where he lays.
Chay quivers as his heart skips. He’s so big. How’s it going to fit?
As if he’s read his mind, Kim gives him a tender smile. He takes Chay’s hand and brings his knuckles to his lips.
“I’ll go slow,” Kim says. He kisses Chay’s wrist as he lines himself up. “Tell me right away if you want me to stop. Take a deep breath and relax…Good. You’re doing so good.”
Kim drapes himself over Chay as the tip enters him, pushing in as slow as possible. He stills when the head is in, giving Chay all the time he needs to adjust and catch his breath. Then he presses a little further, a harsh grunt punched out of him as Chay’s insanely hot and tight walls start sucking him in, squeezing Kim’s cock in a scorching pressure that has him seeing stars. Kim kisses Chay’s eyelids, kisses away the tears rolling down his face as he takes him deeper.
“Are you okay?” Kim breathes.
“I…It s-stings a little,” Chay stutters. “But don’t…Don’t–Ah!” The stretch is borderline unbearable and Chay fears he’ll be torn apart, yet the pleasure shooting through him alongside the pain has him yearning for more. And when he looks up at Kim’s face through his tears, when he sees the attentiveness, the kindness, the affection he remembers, when he sees Kim’s desire for him storming in his eyes… Chay wants him. He wants Kim so badly. “Please don’t stop.”
Kim’s heart thunders. He gathers Chay in his arms, smothering his neck and shoulders with heated kisses. He never wants to let Chay go ever again, as long as he lives. Chay hugs him tight, his slender arms wrapping around Kim’s muscular back as he finally buries himself to the hilt inside him.
“Porchay,” Kim rasps against Chay’s swollen red lips. He pulls out a bit then slowly thrusts back in. He groans into a kiss. Another thrust. “Porchay… You feel so amazing.”
Chay leans his forehead against his, wraps his legs around Kim’s waist.
“I feel so full,” Chay whispers. “Because you’re–ngh–inside me. Kim…”
Kim grits his teeth. The next thrust is a little harder and Chay chokes out a moan.
“You little…” Kim grinds his cock into him, hard and deep. “Do you have any idea what you do to me?” Then Chay touches his face so gently, like he’s holding a baby animal. More tears flood his big brown eyes. They spill over when Chay smiles. “Chay?”
“I’m so happy,” Chay says. “I’m so happy I met you. Everything, the good things and the bad things. I’m glad they all happened so I could be here with you like this. I don’t regret any of it.” Chay rubs Kim’s cheekbones with his thumbs. “Thank you, Kim. Thank you for liking me. Thank you for wanting me.”
In Kim’s eyes, everything about Chay is glowing. Warm embers. A candle illuminating the darkness. Sunlight, moonlight. This light that decided to come close to someone like him, that chose to shine for him. That’s still shining for him in this moment even though Kim had stupidly tried to snuff him out.
“I should be saying that,” Kim says, voice heavy with how much he means this. “I never thought someone like you would happen to me. And after what I did to you...” Kim holds Chay’s face. A single tear falls. “Thank you, Porchay, for liking and wanting me. For still liking and wanting me.”
Their tearful smiles become soft laughter and they kiss.
Kim starts moving, setting a slow, even pace. As the pain subsides and is replaced with overwhelming pleasure, Chay’s fingernails bite into Kim’s back. Kim groans, relishes in the delicious sting of his skin breaking, and starts snapping his hips a little harder. Kim laves his tongue over Chay’s nipples, sucks on the stiff buds. His hand palms Chay’s erection, stroking it in tandem with his thrusts that are quickly losing their rhythm. He sharply pulls back so that only the head is inside then slams back in. Chay moans, raw and loud, as Kim repeats the motion three more times, the bed jostling and creaking with the strength of his thrusts.
“N-Not like that, Kim,” Chay gasps, then squeals when Kim does it again. He begs between labored breaths,“Kim…! Please it’s too m-much! Ah! Ahh!” Kim’s cock pounds his prostate and Chay screams.
“But I can feel you thrusting back down every time,” Kim says, teeth scraping Chay’s chin.
Chay turns away, blushing bright. “What are you– AHH –saying?”
Kim grunts as he moves over him and starts picking up the pace, barely pulling out, hips pistoning faster and faster, possessed with unbridled passion as his climax rapidly approaches. The sound of wet, slapping flesh, their mingling ragged breaths, their drawn out moans fills the room like a lewd chorus.
“Kim, I can’t–I’m about to–”
“Me, too, Chay. I’m close.” Kim licks Chay’s lips.  “Let’s do it together. Come for me.”
With one more powerful thrust, Kim lodges himself as deep as he can with an animalistic growl. Chay’s head falls back and Kim latches onto his neck as he crushes their hips together. Their bodies shudder violently against each other as they come. Kim grinds into Chay as his release coats his walls, flooding him, filling him. He feels the heat of Chay’s cum on his abdomen, the stuttering of his cock. They remain like this, wrapped in each other’s embrace, riding out the wave, breathing between tired, messy kisses. Eventually Kim reluctantly pulls out. The way Chay shudders and the dirty squelch of his cock slipping out of him almost gets Kim hard again. That, and the bite marks adorning Chay’s neck and shoulders. But instead, Kim tucks himself back into his sweatpants and rolls over, flopping down beside his poor lover.
Chay whines at the sudden emptiness he feels and seeks Kim’s warmth, snuggling into his chest, into Kim’s safe strong arms. Kim holds him close, pressing kisses into his hair, whispering sweet nothings as he tangles their legs together. Chay listens to Kim’s heartbeat and almost cries because he’s missed it so much.
“How was it?” Kim says, fingers stroking Chay’s hair.
Chay blushes and mumbles, “It felt…nice.”
“Just nice?” Kim chuckles when Chay shakes his head and presses further into his chest. “Too cute.”
“Shut up…”
The night settles in, and the room is gradually bathed in soft white moonlight.
“What’s going to happen tomorrow?” Chay asks softly.
Kim hums. Right. The whole mafia thing. “Honestly…I’m not sure.”
Chay draws small circles on Kim’s chest with his finger. “Well whatever it is, I’m going to face it with you. I won’t let you leave me again. And I won’t let you be alone anymore.”
Kim’s arms tighten around him, heart burning. He knows that Chay knows how vulnerable he is, how little he can do against the dangerous forces that now lurk in the shadows, that will follow him the rest of his life. But it doesn’t matter. Chay just wants to be with him. It’s Kim’s greatest weakness, and all the strength he’ll ever need.
“Okay,” he sighs. He noses Chay’s fluffy hair, breathes in his scent, closes his eyes.
“Kim.”
Kim looks at him. “Yeah?”
“I love you.” Chay smiles. He lifts a hand and strokes Kim’s cheek. “Do you…love me?”
Kim breaths in, gazing deep into Chay’s beautiful eyes brimming with love. Love for him. Love he’ll go to war for. Love he’ll never flee from again even if it kills him.
Kim captures Chay’s lips in a long, passionate kiss.
“I love you, Porchay.”

Because I'm too excited about my current WIPs but also need motivation to work on my current WIPs...send one of the below titles as an ask and I'll post a snippet. All fics will likely be rated E because that's just who I am as a person.

Interlude
Fandom: Kinnporsche
Summary: WHAT IS THIS, ANOTHER FIC I FORGOT I WROTE???? This one is COMPLETE?????? Who AM I?! Anyway, uhhh, apparently this is what I wrote after Episode 6 about the aftermath of Kinn taking a bullet for Porsche, his recovery and their negotiation of their new relationship, but it got epically un-canoned by the mini episode and I never published it
And I leave you with this paragraph from my notes app, which I wrote in a drunken haze at midnight after a conference reception last week:
Dongsik needs $ to fund his search for Yuyeon and decides to dip his toe into sex work. Juwon, under his father's guidance, is investigating Dongsik for Yuyeon's murder from afar. Kiwan sees this as an opportunity to kill two birds with one stone--get Juwon close to his target (honeypot pillow talk kinda thing) and also deal with the 'issue' of Juwon's persistent virginity.
Tagging @yeetlegay because they've been an enabler on most of these

"When you're free, tell him how to be a good pet" - Or: Vegas always had the intention to let Pete go
Yes, I'm rewatching the last few episodes of KinnPorsche again 😅
But anyway, I don't know if this has already been pointed out by someone else, but Vegas has never had the intention to kill or seriously injure Pete and pretty much right from the moment Pete has been captured, Vegas has already planned to send him back to the main family.
In ep11, Vegas comes back into the bedroom after a fight with his father and he turns towards his hedgehog, telling it "When you're free, tell him how to be a good pet." Those words are obviously not meant for the hedgehog, but for Pete. What Vegas actually says is: "When you're free, Pete, tell Kinn how to be a good pet."
Tumblr media
During those times in ep10 and 11 when Vegas tortures Pete, calls him names and tries various other ways to get under his skin, Vegas might appear volatile and unhinged, but everything he does is actually very calculated. He isn't doing those things to satisfy a sadistic urge or to vent out his anger, he does them with the intention to break Pete's spirit.
He knows that Pete is Kinn's most trusted and loyal bodyguard, so he wants to turn Pete into his own little pet. Vegas plans to send Pete back home after successfully breaking him, so that Kinn can realize that Pete is now completely devoted to Vegas. It is all about feeling the satisfaction to win yet another battle against Kinn, to be able to turn even his most trusted bodyguard into nothing more than a mindless dog. It would be even better than seducing Tawan!
But what Vegas doesn't take into account at that time is that A) you cannot break what is already so thoroughly broken and B) his own feelings for Pete. Vegas is a thinker through and through. He might be able to manipulate others by following certain behaviors that he has studied, but he doesn't really understand someone else's feelings. Likewise, Vegas isn't in touch with his own feelings, which is why his reactions can be very over the top with emotional outbursts, breaking things, hurting himself and others and so on.
Tumblr media
So that's were Vegas makes a mistake. Pete already got under his skin. The first time we can see Vegas getting confused about his own feelings is when Pete flinches away from him during the whipping scene. Vegas didn't expect this kind of reaction from Pete, because it is the reaction of someone who's getting abused. Vegas doesn't want that, he wants a power struggle between them, he wants Pete to fight back and he eventually wants to break him. But he doesn't want this to be like a case of everyday abuse. So Vegas gets out of the room to try and break Pete by giving him the illusion that an escape is possible.
Tumblr media
At that point Vegas still doesn't know that his plan to make Pete his pet doesn't just originate from the desire to win over Kinn, but also a desire to have Pete all to himself. When Pete faints, Vegas panics. The fear of loosing Pete finally overwhelms him and he realizes that Pete is way more important to him than he had thought. Even though Vegas' behavior changes after the fainting scene, there are still times when he reverts back to his original plan to make Pete his pet. It feels safer for him than to admit that he's really falling for Pete. Unfortunately that's the reason why Pete's condition worsens every day, Pete doesn't want to be a pet or an object. So even though Pete's eventual escape was heartbreaking to witness, it simply had to happen. Vegas needed that time alone to figure out his feelings and now that he has, nothing will be able to stop him from being with Pete.

Comedy of Gestures - The Genius of Kinnporsche's Humour

It's slapstick, it's old fashioned and it's really really refreshing. In the era of referential, wink-wink, sarcastic, look-we-are-so-witty comedy comes in Kinnporsche with sincere, childlike humour which embraces cringe and celebrates the silly.
A case study of acting techniques
Starting off with the Himbo to end all Himbos: Porsche. No doubt that Apo is an acting all rounder but his true strength definitely lies in comedy and body comedy in particular. How does he even come up with these things I have no idea but he's always a delight to see on screen I mean look at him-

Next up is Tong's Tankhun + his bodyguards. I really don't think I need to elaborate they are literally cartoon characters

Mile's Kinn who really shined in episode 6 but had moments here and there even before that. While Porsche is at his most funny when he is being a brat, Kinn is the funniest when he is petty-angry. He isn't as chaotic as the rest but he is hilarious in his own right. My absolute favourite scene is him trying to not get angry while trying to bring Porsche back home it's so ridiculously funny. Him singing off key is hands down the funniest thing to exist ever fight me on this.

I have not even started on the gun jokes and the horny bastardry of kinnporsche or how iconic Yok and Jom are I'm just so glad of the wholesome juvenility of this show
They are all clowns

Kinnporsche: A rant.
I am going to say this once, this is my opinion on the show. I understand that to some people Kinnporsche is the best show and my criticism might ruffle feathers, if you are like that please do not let me ruin your enjoyment of the show. I can like the show and still criticize it. Now that's out of the way let's jump in 💃💃
If there is one thing I hate about Kinnporsche, it is their use of comedy. I understand the show is in part a comedy and they have been serious moments that are handled well but the tonal shift from serious to slapstick comedy often gives me whiplash.
I am going to use episode 8 as a case study of sorts to highlight what I find so annoying about this device.
Episode 8 is one of the more divisive episodes in Kinnporsche series, its divisiveness was made apparent in the split that occurred in the fandom after it aired. Some people thought it was amazing others thought it was horrible and a waste of time. I am stuck somewhere in the middle. I think the episode started out great, it brought out the sweet and escapist nature of the Kinnporsche relationship, the dates, sneaking around and Porsche's conversation with Yok and his friends were all 👩‍🍳😘 for me. My problem with the episode only begins with the latter part.
I hated the jokey and senseless way Tawan's character was introduced. It was stupid and achieved next to nothing. Before anyone points out that it made Kinnporsche to have a conversation, that is something that could have been achieved in a different way. But no, for the sake of comedy we must have Porsche being haunted by Zombie Tawan.
The show changed novel canon by making it be that Kinn supposedly shoots Tawan instead of him being in London. And I understand why the story was changed that way, it shows the danger of their world and if Tawan betrayed Kinn just letting him go off to London would seem weird. But the show doesn't make use of this premise, we have Tawan stalking Kinn being made into a ghost joke that while funny simply eats up screen time that could have been used to achieve better things.
A way I would change that entire half and achieve the same plot development is have someone, maybe Pete drop the Tawan bomb to Porsche without knowing its significance to Porsche or have Porsche find Tawan's picture among Kinn's stuff and realizing that he isn't the first person Kinn has been happy with, cue conversation, and then we have Kinn flashback to the day he was supposed to kill Tawan and being unable to do it.
We can even use the whole Tawan haunting Porsche thing but take out the over the top comedy and have Kinn be alerted that something might be wrong because while everyone else thinks Tawan is dead Kinn knows he is alive and Porsche suddenly seeing him means he is back despite Kinn asking him to disappear. But instead we get Kinn who is just super calm and goes off to make merits, like it's just another day on the job when your current bf is seeing your supposed to be dead bf despite never actually meeting him.
Also, why is no one talking about the fact that Tawan is still alive when Kinn was supposed to kill him. A short scene of Papa Korn digging at Kinn for not having the guts to finish the job would have been appreciated but nope, we just get Kinn saying 'so you are still alive' to Tawan and everything is fine and dandy.
I am not even going to go into the absurdity of Kinn believing Tawan (lying, betraying ass.) over Porsche because there is a possibility that there is more to the story and I don't want to be forced to eat my own words. The thing I just want to say is I won't get my hopes up because I don't trust Kinn as a character, I don't trust his perception and intellect because the show doesn't seem to want us to. In a show like The Devil Judge, I learned to trust Kang Yohan, I learned to believe that he would always have a plan because that's the kind of smart character he was.
Too much in this show is been chucked up to plot convenience and it is getting so absurd that my bullshit meter and suspension of disbelief is reaching max point. Tawan is poisoned and no one tries to investigate how it happened. We just sail past that, Vegas is allowed to walk around the main family house like it's his and no one seems to be telling the heads of the family. There are many more that I can't even remember now. I would like to believe that the show will clear up some of these stuff but my expectations are low because I know better than to trust the writers of shows in general, you tell yourself they are too smart to write something so absurd and senseless but they just go forward and prove you wrong.
To put an end to an over long post, I want to say that Kinnporsche is doing its best but as a consumer I have the right to point out this parts I see as flaws. I have come to learn that lowering my expectations and expecting nothing has allowed me to enjoy the show better. In a way, it is pioneering a new type in thai BL world and I hope if season 2 does come some of these things will be rectified. Comedy isn't bad but you have to decide if you want your show to be a complete slapstick show or something to be taken seriously, I don't want it to be all gloom and doom, the jokes are nice but can be too much at times. The plot is also not as realized as I would like it to be but like I said before, my expectations are now lowered because what I wanted is not what I am getting and I am grateful that we are getting anything at all.

for those of us with a professionally-driven interest in rubbernecking comms crises but an ambient radiation level of exposure to the kinnporsche phenomenon, is there a summary of your superbowl available anywhere?
I've found this to be a really useful overview!
But it's also progressively getting dumber because nobody is getting off of social media! And also we are fully seeing a real time Gina jamming to her music while shits on fire behind her at the 99 while active clusterfuckery continues unabated! Incredible! Fascinating! A case study in reputation risk management waiting to happen!

hey hi hello
its me again. i hope you’re having a good week so far.
so i have a question. i’m not really sure if it’s true though. but i’ve watched some of kinnporsche promo interviews and i don’t really see the cast push the pairs as much? like when they are doing a pair interview they don’t act super cutesy or anything. i mean i’ve seen them act like a couple but it’s still more toned (?) down than other paired couples in other bl. idk if it’s really like this or i’ve seen interviews that just don’t have as much fan service. for me they feel way more like good friends than an actual couple (i’m talking irl). especially the side couples.
so i wonder if its true if it’s because of the tone of KP or maybe the actors? or is it a conscious choice of the production team or just a coincidence.
also side note do you have any like research citations for your metas or is it just your knowledge??
Hi, sorry I'm not watching the bts footage of KP. I really try not to. The pair branding, while I find it intellectually interesting from a sociology standpoint really creeps me out.
For my metas? Sometimes there's links to source stuff, mostly Wikipedia or off Tumblr blogs. The statistical data ones are just me and my dumb spreadsheet. In this post about why Asia picked up BL when the west did not I mention a couple books (since it's actually tangential to some of my old academic work). In the ones where I talk about origin yaoi there's links. Mostly, if I like outside sources it's more like evidence or case studies. But in general they're compilations of my own knowledge and limited resources. It's not like there are JSTOR white papers on BL, sadly. The romance genre in general is understudied (see the above linked post). If I hear someone with "cultural authority" talk about BL I'll usually post or mention it in the weeklies (NPR's pop culture happy hour recently did Heartstopper).
