Mitwa
from the motion picture Lagaan
I adore David Byrne. I adore The Lady of Gaga. Their 2023 Oscar-nominations did not represent either artist at their best. Their live performances at last night's show were uncharacteristically bad. It was an underwhelming year for Best Original Song nominees, overall. I want to believe that the Academy's recognition of Naatu Naatu from RRR last night will usher in an age in which Indian music and movies can finally get the respect they deserve from American audiences, even if, realistically, I think it would have been overlooked if it had had any real competition. For today, though, let's enjoy the possibility of great movies and great music transcending national and cultural borders.

I have my (many) gripes a/b Spotify, but I’ll give it this: the liked songs playlist. Under few other circumstances would I listen to Mitwa from the Lagaan soundtrack directly after Have A Cigar by Pink Floyd.

Over time, both Jodhaa and Akbar learn from and gain admiration for each other. He assures Jodhaa that they will let things fall into place. After their marriage, Jodhaa acts reluctant with Akbar and they do not consummate their marriage. To her surprise, Akbar agrees to all her demands. Jodhaa demands a meeting with Akbar and demands to keep her Hindu religion after marriage, and that a temple be built for her to continue her faith, with the intention of having the emperor call off the wedding. Her mother gives her a vial of poison and tells her to use it if a need arises. Jodhaa replies that it would deceive Akbar and would be death to their kingdom if he finds out. Jodhaa shares all her misery with her mother, who tells her to send a servant girl in her place. She writes a letter to Sujamal, her brother, entreating him to come rescue her from the marriage, but she doesn't send it, though. Jodhaa completely resents being reduced to a mere political pawn as she wants to marry Ratan Singh, a local Rajput prince. When the Mughal Emperor Akbar plans to attack Amer, Raja Bharmal reluctantly makes a peace offering, proposing to strengthen relations by his daughter's marriage to the emperor himself to avoid war.Īkbar agrees to the marriage, as it would bring forward a true strong alliance and long lasting peace between the Mughals and Rajputs. Sujamal, who is deprived of his rightful throne, angrily leaves the kingdom to join rebels. Filming began at Karjat and the film was released on 15 February Raja Bharmal announces that his son Bhagwant Das would be his heir and Sujamal, Jodhaa's cousin, whom she wants to be the king's heir instead of Bhagwant Das, will have to work under him. Well this is finally just my personal opinion and there could a lot of emotional bias at subconscious level, I dont know.īut this movie anyway is an excellent educational experience in 'management', how to be a good shepherd. I have seen 'No man's land' a couple of times and have never been able to comprehend why that movie was given the Oscar ahead of this movie.

ateez watching indian movies with you
Tumblr media
author's note: i'm a brown atiny who majored in film aka bollywood/indian movies are a huge part of my identity— i was watching kal ho naa ho the other night nd was thinking abt whether or not atz would watch indian movies w me and what their reactions would be. also, i def missed a huge chunk of movies so pls excuse me ehe

Tumblr media Tumblr media
hongjoong: this poor baby he's so dedicated to his work but would do his best to make time for the two of you to watch a three hour long indian movie with you, only to fall asleep part way through. he'd last the first 10-15 minutes then pass out, and if you're watching a south indian film, he'll immediately wake tf up when a gun goes off or during the first fight scene. he'd really want to watch rrr with you but fully fall asleep, only to be scared awake during the scene with ntr jr (bheem) wrestling the tiger and be scared shitless from there. however, if you're watching a romcom? gl bc the man is definitely fully asleep and will wake up at the end and say, "that was good i enjoyed it!" you want to be mad at him, but he looks so well rested that you're glad he enjoyed the movie in some way, shape, or crazy form. but fr he'd love the movies that are super detailed and conceptual like if he watched pushpa: the rise, he's definitely highly anticipating pushpa: the rule. he's a 2 part film kinda guy imo he loves the long development and the intensive research and the dedication a director puts into his work. i think he's a rajamouli guy for sure. maybe even like sholay, lagaan, english vinglish— you get the idea.
Tumblr media
seonghwa: seonghwa's a super emotional audience member— everything affects him so deeply, especially scenes with heartbreak or little kids. like, the scene in kuch kuch hota hai where kajol (anjali) finds out that srk (rahul) is in love with rani mukherji (tina) and she's just sobbing and then the song plays? hwa is fully sobbing. he's like clinging to you and drying his eyes and you're patting his back while whispering "it's just a movie it's okay" but it's not okay because unrequited love HURTS. he's definitely more of a bollywood romcom person and probably will want to binge all of srk's movies with you one night, and during the most romantic songs, he'll stand up and copy the iconic srk stance (you know the one with his arms stretched out and then the female lead runs into his arms) and he'll 100% expect you to run into his arms. he's a karan johar bitch fr... either karan johar or yrf. i feel like he wouldn't really vibe with south indian films and end up preferring the sappy, bollywood romcom. but, he's totally an indian serial slut and would binge everything like there's no tomorrow (yeh rishta, iss pyaar ko kya naam doon?, bade achhe lagte hain, and so on) but in terms of movies, he'd love kabhi alvida naa kehna, kabhi kushi khabi gham, kal ho naa ho, dostana, kuch kuch hota hai, chalte chalte (just call him an srk stan and move on).
Tumblr media
yunho: one word: golmaal. he would love the shit outta rohit shetty i'm telling you. like, yes, he appreciates the fine cinema that comes from india, but rohit shetty's got him rolling on the floor in fits. yunho gives such bakwas indian movie vibes but we're here for it— like, the dumbassary in golmaal 2 is everything to him, and chennai express would send him into fits (especially the drunk srk scene). he'd also 100% get up on his feet and start dancing to the upbeat songs in the films more than anything, though, he would fully make fun of the super dramatic scenes with the bawling and sobbing— and i'm not talking about truly tragic scenes but like when the sadness is overdramatic and it suddenly starts raining while the main character is crying (specifically the song tujhe yaad na meri aayee from kuch kuch hota hai) so it's safer to stick to the dumb funny movies... maybe give good newwz a whirl
Tumblr media
yeosang: yeosangie is happy to do anything and everything with you even if he knows the movie will confuse the shit outta him. you'd probably start the guy off on the sequel to a movie (my brain immediately went don 2 or dhoom 2) and he'll be so mad confused the whole time, so he'll keep asking you questions during the movie because he wants to be just as invested in it as you are. more than anything, though, he's more invested in you explaining the movie because of how passionately you talk about the plot and the characters and the dialogue— you might as well forego the movie and just describe the movie to him while spooning in bed. that being said, he'd probably also rewatch the movie a couple of times to fully wrap his head around the film now that he's acquired your commentary and can pair it with the visuals in the film. either that or the poor thing would fall asleep... but he'd fall asleep on your shoulder and just sink into your embrace so fuck the movie just cuddle and take a nap while armaan malik sings in the background
Tumblr media
san: san is such a wild card imo but let's be real i feel like he'd be such a horndog while watching movies so it doesn't even matter what movie you put on he'll only be half present, especially if the don series or race series or lust stories is playing oh dear god don't show this man cocktail if you want to actually watch a movie with you... or pathaan dear lord help BUT i feel like he'd be more interested in the family related movies— like where family is everything so k3g, ala vaikunthapurramuloo, bomarillu, chillar party, main hoon na, tararumpum, etc. also maybe even the ones about friendship, so zindagi naa milegi dobara, 3 idiots, dil chahta hai, jaane tu ya jaane na, rang de basanti, kai po che— again, the wildest of cards. he'd be down to see anything honestly. anything for his love wink wonk
Tumblr media
mingi: god this boy i feel like he would ask all the questions in the world like every other dialogue it's just another question (but they're all related to the movie so it's... okay?) but he just won't have the patience to wait for the next scene to answer his question. no, he wants to know from you so movies like 83, chak de india, dil bole hadippa, paan singh tomar, jersey (BUT THE TELUGU ONE JFC NOT THE HINDI ONE I CANNOT EMPHASIZE ENOUGH), dangal, basically any sports movie would be best for him because most of his questions would be about the sport so there's no chance of you spoiling the movie for him but i feel like he'd also be a huge priyanka chopra fan but some of her filmography is........ traumatizing? confusing? i'm thinking fashion specifically for trauma while what's your raashee? is just so unbelievably confusing. he'd also like deepika padukone, alia bhaat, samantha, rashmika— as long as she's pretty and a talented actress, mingi's gonna vibe
Tumblr media
wooyoung: indian movies are his jam imo he'd get up on his feet every single song and dance his heart out even if the song is super duper sad (man's is fully dancing to naatu naatu but then also sadly jamming to komuram bheemudo two seconds later the duality is insane). his favorite actors are definitely allu arjun, vijay, hrithik roshan, varun dhawan, tamannaah— and he would rewatch the shit outta abcd and dhoom 2 because the dance numbers are truly impeccable. movies like abcd, rab ne bana di jodi, chance pe dance are right up his alley but i also feel like he'd have fun watching bunty aur babli, jhoom barabar jhoom, race gurram, etc. he's a happy-go-lucky kinda movie guy, imo
Tumblr media
jongho: jongho's the type to be super judgmental but like in the best way possible. he sits and watches the movie quietly with his arms crossed over his chest and his eyebrows furrowed. super quiet and super serious. you sneak glances at him every so often but you seriously can't tell what's going on in his head until he debriefs you after the movie is done, which could go one of two ways: he spares your feelings and tells you he likes the movie (if you tell him that this movie is your most favorite movie in the world) or be completely straightforward with you and dive into an in-depth film analysis. i feel like he'd prefer the movies with gorgeous soundtracks though and want to learn to sing some of the songs (we hate kabir singh in this house but bekhayali would shake his world, and fanaa oh lord he would love that ost with all of his heart... maybe even the main hoon na ost) but lordy any ost with sid sriram is his JAM

Man I wanted to carpet bomb the crap out of tumblr with pairing art this February, but I am so tired. I haven’t gotten to as much as I wanted. But work is slowing down. Hopefully I can start getting some rest and not stress out so much.
This pic was inspired by Gurren Lagaan. 03 Donnie and Mona are so Simon and Nia. There isn’t really a sense of romance in their relationship for a long time, but Donnie just constantly shows up for her. Being there I think is largely his love language.
Since I’m still on the music prompt, songs that remind me of this pairing:
Ryan Star - “Last Train Home”
Ingrid Michaelson - “Light Me Up”

2023 in Films
I watched way too many films this year. Here are my opinions on some of them
January
Las Cosas Del Querer (1989) - Amazing if you love sad hot people and flamenco
Canadian Bacon (1995) - Incredibly silly and Alan Alda plays the US president
Nope (2022) - A highlight of the year
February
Hellraiser (1987) - This film is actually about miscommunication in this essay I will-
Predestination (2014) - Time Travel and Gender Moments
Malignant (2021) - Camp horror masterwork
Late Phases (2014) - Mediocre werewolf film with some really interesting comments on ageism, ableism, suburbia and religion
March
Sterne (1959) - Plays into some problematic stereotypes from today's perspective but revolutionary for its time, first German film to address the Holocaust
Major League (1989) - A film I only watched to confirm that it uses a weird phrase I also found in my thesis project
Carry On Screaming (1966) - Camp. Gay. Horror. Parody.
Glen or Glenda (1953) - A product of its time and no longer up to date in its understanding of gender but surprisingly revolutionary in its compassion and earnestness despite the bad reviews
April
Taxi Driver (1976) - Isn't it frustrating when annoying people tell you a film is good and then it's actually good?
June
Mr Deeds Goes To Town (1936) - Mr Deeds has autism swag
El Espíritu de la Colmena (1973) - I really wanted to like this because civil war era Spain and Frankenstein are super up my alley but unfortunately it was so much slower than expected
Das Boot (1981) - Very long and claustrophobic but holds up to the hype
Weird: The Al Yankovic Story (2022) - RIP King
July
Nimona (2023) - His big wet eyes bewitched me
First Blood (1982) - You're telling me the film is about Americans fighting an enemy they view as simultaneously weak and dangerous, escalating the situation, and then sending more and more men into a rainforest to die through guerilla warfare after being warned again and again they can't win this? sounds familiar
Barbie (2023) - Insert a bunch of pink emojis
Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022) - Made me crave bagels
Jojo Rabbit (2019) - God I love war satires
Sweet Liberty (1986) - Alan Alda having fun and also using his own film as a therapy session
The Majestic (2001) - A rewatch but it's so tragically underrated, Jim Carrey is very good in dramatic roles and McCarthy-era media is like catnip for me
Joker (2019) - This is just Taxi Driver with extra steps
August
Tin & Tina (2023) - Probably one of the worst films I have seen in a while
Battle of the Sexes (2017) - I love women
Four Lions (2010) - The ending really got me, I love when satire gets serious
The Sheriff and the Satellite Kid (1979) - Can we talk about how the theme song is just going "I'm the sheriff" "yes you're the sheriff"
Happiness (1998) - Nauseating but in a "good film but what the fuck" way
They Call Him Bulldozer (1978) - Italian Lagaan
The Talented Mr Ripley (1999) - Sad and Gay
Twister (1996) - So much better than expected
Magnolia (1999) - Cloudy with a chance of frogs, a really long but really good film and I'm not entirely sure I got it
Doubt (2008) - Somehow I watched 5 films with Philip Seymour Hoffman that month because I was haunted by his ghost or something
September
The Terminal (2004) - I assumed this to be more of a classic romcom but the whole concept (based on a true story) is so terrifying and tragic that it made me feel all emotions at once
Apocalypse Now (1979) - I knew a lot of trivia about the film but for some reason I didn't know anything about the cast so every single actor was a surprise and made me go "!!!", Also I kinda wanna write an essay about it
October
Bloodbath at the House of Death (1984) - Some of the gay jokes absolutely killed me
Last Night in Soho (2021) - I'm Not Like the Other Girls to Time Travel Murder Nightmare Pipeline, actually I really enjoyed this one but it's also super silly
The Banshees of Inisherin (2022) - How do you say poor little meow meow in gaeilge
The Menu (2022) - I go to the murder restaurant I order the beesechurger, I was super surprised there's no cannibalism but tbh that would have been low hanging fruit
The Eyes of Tammy Faye (2021) - Explains a lot about religion in the US, I love that she was pro lgbt, also I googled her ex husband and he has a prepper/survivalist thing going on now and scams more people
The Darjeeling Limited (2007) - we can't eat pray love ourselves out of this one boys
Holes (2003) - Hated the book as a teenager for school reasons but gave the film a try and really enjoyed it
Renfield (2023) - I expected werewolves but I enjoyed it nevertheless, My Chemical Romance is on the soundtrack, it's very silly, the effects are great
Interview with the Vampire (1994) - Oh people weren't lying about it being homoerotic
The Big Lebowski (1998) - I've had days that feel like that
November
Pappa ante Portas (1991) - Funnier now that I'm an adult, basically half the jokes my mum makes are from this film
The Meg 2: The Trench (2023) - I watched this while sick and really wanted to see a giant shark fight a giant octopus and boy did it deliver
Puss in Boots: The Last Wish (2022) - Very nice animation style
JFK (1991) - I actually fell asleep halfway through because it's so long but can we talk about how this film is just A-listers but has some of the worst wigs and makeup I've seen
Bottoms (2023) - A spiritual sequel to Heathers
December
When Harry Met Sally (1989) - They deserve each other (derogatory) but that one restaurant scene was pretty funny
The Royal Nanny (2022) - one of the many Hallmark films my mum made me watch and this is perhaps the worst one, incredibly sexist even for a Hallmark film and they clearly mean Mi5 but say Mi7 which was a WW2 propaganda service? Also they really want me to believe there is a British prince called Colin and that he doesn't look like his family tree is a circle?
I forgot the title but there was also the one where two people get stuck in a time loop while trying to make a sponsored youtube video about baking and I didn't really pay attention much but man that was bad

I AM BACK!
super random question, what type of music do you listen to? it's one of my fave questions to ask people cus it gives lots of insight into personality and stuffs
for me, i like kpop, jpop, rnb and hiphop (and now im kinda curious what sort of impression that gives of me 🤔)
-🐍(thanks for the sun warmed rock! its been so cold lately, so i really needed it)
Hi snake anon!
Uhhh it depends on the mood, really?
Sometimes pop hits for the nostalgia, most of the time some kind of alt or rock (I adore celtic punk and bagrock), anime and movie soundtracks, modern classical music (lots of Einaudi), bollywood soundtracks (the ones for Lagaan and Dangal especially!), anything gay (especially gay rap or country music) or feminist (I love angry/proud lyrics that make me think), some piano and violins, the "cringe" leftovers from the 2000s and 2010s (MCR, FOB, and TOP), the intro piece to Barbie and the 12 Dancing Princesses, the Arcana and Stardew Valley soundtracks, internet songs that made me smile ("It's Corn!" or that one by Sink-182), and several artists I support independently off of Spotify as part of my spiritual life ^.^
No idea what that says about me so I'll leave it up to you XD

In all seriousness, if you’d told me that a Telugu dance number would beat out ballads sung by Lady Gaga and Rihanna to win Best Original Song at the Oscars, I would never have believed it, especially when I remember Lagaan getting snubbed for Best Foreign Film back in 2002 with a lot of salt.
I have never been more thrilled to be wrong.  It was a well-deserved win, and everyone involved should be proud. <3

PLEASE tell me someone else on this app has watched Lagaan, that movie where the English colonizers in India I think (correct me if I'm wrong) challenged the ppl to a cricket duel to decide whether the colonizers would leave or if the colonizers would charge them a higher tax I think?? And then like- a noble English woman fell in love with the lead character and her parents were like "TREACHERY" but then she got with him anyway? Because that movie HIT. Like, I still sometimes sing songs from it, like Ghanan Ghanan SLAPPED and still does. I remember watching that years ago and my classmates and I went batshit crazy during that song, there were kids picking up chairs, people dancing, it was chaos and it was SO GOOD.

Ive been in a musical mood and dive into some of my favorite musicals back in high school/middle school days. And just learned that my favorite musical is finally getting a movie adaptation after 20 years being on Broadway. About damn time, been waiting for Wicked to be made into a movie forever. My question is what are some of the Ericson kids favorite musicals. Examples could be the following: Phantom of the Opera, Rent, Wicked, Hamilton, Les miserables ect.
Ooo, we love musicals so this is a fun ask!
Louis: He loves Hadestown even though it makes him cry every time he sees it or listens to the soundtrack.
Ruby: She loves Annie Get Your Gun. She isn't a fan at all of the sexist ending but she loves the different songs with Annie.
Brody: She enjoys some songs from Dear Evan Hansen since she can relate to his feelings of anxiety.
Aasim: He loves Hamilton. It's a history-based musical about a smart-ass so what more could he want?
Mitch: He really vibes with Stomp. All the noise and jumping and trash can smashing - he loves seeing it every time.
Violet: She loves Chicago because she enjoys seeing hot women singing about murdering scummy men.
Clem: She loves The Wizard of Oz and the nostalgia of it and the magical world. She also enjoys The Wiz.
Marlon: He likes Annie, enjoying the wholesomeness of Annie being able to get out of a bad home life and getting adopted. Plus he loves Sandy.
Willy: He loves Willy Wonka and The Chocolate Factory. At first, it was because he liked that it had his name in it but then there was chocolate, candy, and the Oompa Loompas. It has it all for him!
Minnie: She loves Mary Poppins, especially the movie. She would enjoy watching the movie on days when she wasn't feeling well as a kid. It was a comfort movie for her.
Sophie: She loves Hairspray. She vibes with how quirky and high-spirited the characters and she really likes the story and songs.
James: He likes Moulin Rogue and the beautiful, romantic tragedy of it all. The others don't really get it but James still loves it.
AJ: Not a stage musical but he loves Muppet Christmas Carol
Omar: He loves the Blues Brothers. He really enjoys the music from it and finds the story amusing.
Tenn: He loves Phantom of the Opera; he enjoys the drama and tragedy of it all. The music is really good and Tenn enjoys the aesthetic.
Here's some ocs too
Renata: She loves In the Heights and can watch it all the time, relating to how it feels to grow up Hispanic in America and loving the music.
Prisha: She absolutely adores old-timey musicals so Singing in the Rain, Sound of Music, My Fair Lady, and The Music Man. She also enjoys ones that the others love and modern musicals like Phantom of the Opera, Chicago, and Wicked. She loves Bollywood too, especially Lagaan.

Alright, I know April’s almost over but as it is still Autism Acceptance Month, I wanted to talk a little about it. Just wanted to share what being autistic is like for me and some of my special interests.
I was diagnosed with ASD and ADHD when I was 8 years old. Back then, I was technically diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome but that was merged into ASD in 2011 so I’ll just refer to it as ASD. Anyway, I didn’t really know what that meant until I was seventeen and actually did some research. Learning that a bunch of my behaviors and certain feelings I had were actually because I was autistic was…. I don’t know, relieving? Things started to make more sense. Before this point, all I knew was that I didn’t understand social cues and I was very specific about what I liked and disliked. It did not help that I was also on ADHD medication that exacerbated the negative parts of autism. Since that day, I’ve learned so much more about myself and I learn new things about autism everyday. I’m not angry or upset that I’m autistic. I was (and still kinda am) mad at the people who didn’t explain it to me properly when I was younger but that’s beside the point. I’ve learned to accept it and I’m a lot happier because of it. I don’t need people to be aware of me. I just need people to accept me.
Okay, that was a lot. Hmm. Anyway, SPECIAL INTERESTS, LET’S GO!!!! 😃
My primary special interests are manga, anime, and video games. And within those special interests are even MORE special interests. For example, some of the manga I have a huge interest in include Bleach, One Piece, Fullmetal Alchemist and Jujutsu Kaisen. There’s a lot more but there are too many list. On the flip side, the anime I like differs slightly. I don’t always like anime adaptations of manga I like. For example, I really don’t care for either the Bleach or One Piece adaptations (Bleach TYBW is the exception). There are certain scenes from each that I really enjoy watching and they both have great soundtracks and great voice acting in both the original Japanese and the english dubs, but weird choices that differ from the source material and huge pacing issues make them hard for me to watch. On the other hand, there are certain adaptations that I prefer to the source material, such as Demon Slayer or Mob Psycho 100. These two in particular take the original material and enhance it greatly. What’s more, there are certain series where I really like both the original manga and the anime (Chainsaw Man and Jujutsu Kaisen to name a couple). Also, I love original anime, like Space Dandy, Oddtaxi, Gurren Lagaan, Appare Ranman, and Vivy: Flourite Eyes Song. It’s really cool to see original content in a medium that is primarily adaptations.
Starting a new paragraph for video games. This might be my big special interest. RPGs, Metroidvanias, platformers, action games, puzzle games, party games, etc. I really love video games. Favorite series include but are not limited too: Mario, The Legend of Zelda, Kingdom Hearts, Pokémon, and Xenoblade Chronicles. In case you couldn’t tell, I’m a big Nintendo person. If I had to pick a genre, I’d say RPGs are my favorite, whether they are turned based or action oriented. My top three favorite games of all time are Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, and Kingdom Hearts II. Favorite Pokémon generation is three though Scarlet is my current favorite game. I could go on about how I love different combat and level up systems in different games, how I love that the sidequests in the Xenoblade games add to the worldbuilding and give them so much depth, how I love watching videos analyzing background lore in games like Hollow Knight or Breath of the Wild or videos going into detail about how dark series like Kirby or Splatoon are, or how even though the story is insanely stupid I adore Kingdom Hearts for how sincere it is. But I feel like this has gone a bit longer than I originally intended.
Anyway, a couple of notes really quick about Autism Acceptance Month and autism in general:
Don’t support Autism Speaks. They are a hate group focused on trying to “cure” autism.
Don’t use the puzzle piece when talking about autism. It is ableist. Use either the gold infinity symbol for autism or the rainbow infinity symbol for neurodiversity.
Vaccinations don’t cause autism. Whoever came up with that can burn in hell.
I think that’s everything. If whoever is reading this is autistic, I hope you had a great Autism Acceptance Month.
