like there's something about how Callum is the one who helps teach Rayla what the right thing to do is (because his cycle speech inspires her: "You did") at least in her own mind, whereas Callum sees her as a source of inspiration ("You're right") and how Rayla maintains her faith in Callum to always do the right thing (S4 + "Humans were clever. Humans could do anything, they could be anything, they could take their own fates and change them") even when she's messed up, and how she continues not to like... rose-tinted glasses isn't the right word, but she truly deeply trusts Callum to 1) always do the right thing (even while in S5, particularly onwards of 5x08, Callum is probably going to start doubting whether there are scenarios where there is a 'right thing to do' because he just got presented with like 5 where there isn't) and 2) being absolutely willing to enable and forgive whatever 'not right things' he does while not fully addressing it, cause Rayla might disagree with you and/or turn turn against you if/when you do awful things (hi Runaan in S1, hi Callum in 2x07) but her bond of love for you really is unbreakable

-PROTECTIVE BROTHER SOREN
-Ezran is a literal ray of sunshine and he’s about to get his heart crushed this is awful

-IS MIRROR GUY THE SPARKLY HANDS IN THE INTRO ARE THE SPARKLY HANDS EVIL
-“I have something to give you, in private” LETTER???
-girl this is not the time for JOKING oh my gosh
-I’ve waited an entire season for him to get that letter back and he’s not even gonna open it yet??? You’re KILLING me
-all I’m hearing is that we get more Soren and Claudia sibling content
-I love how Lujanne isn’t some all-knowing being, just a funny old lady who can do magic tricks, like she gives the same vibes as the grandmother from Moana

-I was wondering why Rayla hadn’t annihilated Soren by now

-“let’s go judge and criticize things other humans do, and then do the exact same things ourselves” human Rayla is getting a little too real
-just once I want a show where the magical being is just as scared of the human as the human is of it
-“Welcome to me water home, the Ruthless! Named after me dear wife, Ruth, who sadly… doesn’t enjoy sailing” HAHAHAHAHAHHAHA WHO WROTE THESE JOKES
-“Me left eye was taken by a flock of mutinous seagulls!”
“Wow, and what about your right eye?”
“Don’t know, came at me from me left!”
-“the last thing I remember I was talking about Narcolepsy then falling asleep!”
“Yeah that’s about right”
-stop even the parrot has bangers
-bruh is sparkly hands making him do all these things for a spell or just to test him
-first we have a badass general who’s deaf now we have a talented ship captain who’s blind, The Dragon Prince fighting ableism since 2018
-“did he just say the word squawk?” HAHAHAHA
-even if Amaya wasn’t deaf sign language is actually such a great way to send silent signals to other soldiers
-technically Zym is already the king of the dragons since the former king is dead
-also this screenshot
Tumblr media
The perspective makes it look like the lightning is hitting Rayla and I’ve decided that’s either A) romantic metaphor, she’s catching feelings first, or B) she’s gonna get struck by lightning
-“if you die out there I swear I’ll kill you” literally imagine any of your otps saying that to each other and tell me it’s not true love
-idc if he can’t talk Zym is literally my favorite character ever
-respectfully how the heck does that look like a primal stone, you just made a circle with your hands, you could’ve done that to any part of the sky
Tumblr media
-literally love the Crow Master dude
-I know you’re not about to touch that lightning rod, Callum, because that would be STUPID
-BRUH YOU CANT UNDERSTAND ANYTHING IF YOURE DEAD
-you CAN risk your life to learn magic just do it LOGICALLY and don’t be an IDIOT about it
-…did Zym just BLOW UP???
-Amaya you can’t just TACKLE someone who’s holding a freaking LIGHTSABER
-why couldn’t she just have been in lava monster form the whole time she probably would’ve won
-so does Zym get superpowers now or something like there had to have been a reason for that
-“I thought I wanted this badly enough but in the end I didn’t have the guts” no you just decided not to be an absolute idiot
-Viren may be evil but he sure isn’t stupid

Soren & Rayla: Sacrifice
Throughout the series, Soren and Rayla have had many parallels and links that have culminated over time. Most of them are subtle, and I think that’s why it took until my second watch of season 3 to realize their biggest link yet. They both faced their biggest obstacles yet.
Soren was unable to push past his blind loyalty to his family.
Rayla has never killed before.
This season changes this- changes them in the same way. However, in doing so, they sacrifice their strongest links to themselves and what has defined them.
Soren found strength in his family, and his journey has been to realize that he needs to do what is right by doing it himself. Therefore, he leaves his family. Him leaving his father while drunk on his power, mirrored Zuko leaving Ozai on the Day Black Sun.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
However, that scene felt incomplete, and it was meant to because he did not truly face his demons yet. He took a big step, yes, but he did face his father head-on... yet...
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, Rayla has relied on her family, but they left her in some shape or form. Ethari and her village were all she had left from her old life. However, even Ethari, the last piece of her family she was sure of, also pushed her out. Thankfully he did give her a chance to explain herself. However, that did not end her curse/banishment. It kind of mirrored Zuko and his banishment for a total unjustified reason. Ethari acted like Uncle Iroh as being the only one who believed in her after her explanation. However, he could not go with her or lift the spell.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This scene also felt incomplete. Something was missing. We are re-introduced to the fact that she has never killed anyone before. However, more importantly, her village also expected her to fail, and when she was the only one left alive, they turned her into a ghost.
Tumblr media
We then see Rayla talking about her parents again in the dragon nest, and we then find out what really happened. They did not run. Her parents stayed and fought. They protected the egg. But Viren was the reason for all of it. Viren took Rayla’s parents from her.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Both of these scenes build-up to the resolution. Because these scenes expose what’s holding her back, and leads up to the resolution.
Facing demons (Resolution):
Soren and Rayla face their deepest fears and come to a moment they both have to decide what person they are going to be. The outcome is the same.
They both kill Viren.
Two sides of the same sword:
On the surface: We see this situation as black and white. Soren Kills his father to protect Ezran and the hope for the human world. He kills him to do what is right. In doing so he loses his foundation, what’s made him who he is. However, what he gains is peace. Peace in knowing who he is. No matter how much it hurts. We see how awful he feels, but he also knows he had no choice.
The Reason: Killing Viren also means losing his family, his sister. Claudia was there for him from the beginning. She even saved him from a lifetime of paralysis. However, he had to. Not just for peace, but himself. To do the right thing, and to become the person he wants to be.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
On the surface: Rayla faces her moment of truth when she sees Zym being turned into dark magic and makes the decisions to take out Viren, even if it means killing herself to do it. She sacrifices herself because she needs to save peace. Zym is the hope for Xadia as Ezran is the hope for the Humans. Rayla kills Viren for the greater good.
However, there is more to this scene than just good vs. evil.
The Reason: Ethari and the village turned her into a ghost because they didn’t believe she could go through with the mission and kill. Her parents were taken from her by Viren. At this moment, she both redeems herself to the village and avenges her parents. Thus, her entire character arc comes together at this very moment, and this decision is what she knows will define her for history to see. She sacrifices her own life to protect the lives of the future.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Neither of these decisions is selfish. They both fight for the greater good and in the process, face their demons as well. Heart over duty. Duty over heart. Soren sacrifices his heart for his duty to peace, Rayla does the same.
Of course, we know Viren didn’t die in either scene, but they both believed they did, and they faced their demons all the same. Both Soren and Rayla killed Viren because he was their Demons. Viren took Rayla’s parents away from her. Viren took all hope and love away from Soren.

The Dragon Prince and History
There’s not a lot of historical references in The Dragon Prince, but I am stuck at home and bored so I may as well put my history degree to good use. I studied European history, and my specialty is the Wars of the Roses, so mostly this is from around that era. Some of these are stretches, really big ones; but if nothing else I hope that this encourages you to read more about these fascinating men and women throughout history. And if anyone has other ideas about historical references in this show please let me know, I would love to open a discussion and hear your thoughts.
Harrow - Edward the Fourth
Tumblr media
Edward the fourth was King of England from 1461 to 1470 and then again from 1471 to 1483, until his death. Edward’s father was leader of the York faction of the War of The Roses, who tried to depose Henry the Sixth. But his father was killed in battle and Edward took the throne. Now is when the parallels start to come in. Edward enjoyed military success against the Lancasters during the War of the Roses, a feat we see in Harrow as he did take down a dragon and a magma titan. Like Harrow, Edward’s wife had been married before. However when Edward decided to marry the young widow instead of the woman he’d been betrothed to, his allies turned against him. They deposed Edward and Henry the Sixth was briefly returned to the throne until Edward returned with an army and took back his throne. The remainder of his reign was said to be peaceful, but when Edward died a new conflict arose. Edward’s son was twelve years old when he was set to take the throne but the child king was never crowned because of Edward’s brother, Richard the Third.
Harrow could also be based on King Henry the Fifth for his military prowess and untimely death.
Viren - Richard the Third
Tumblr media
Richard the Third was king of England from 1483 to 1485. After the death of his older brother, his twelve year old nephew was set to take the throne. Richard, however, deposed his nephew on the grounds of illegitimacy, as Edward had been betrothed to another young woman before he married the widowed Elizabeth. Richard locked his two young nephews in the Tower of London and neither were ever seen again. It is said that Richard killed them but the bodies were never found. While on the throne, Richard personally drowned his older brother and married the widow of Henry the Sixth’s only son (who he killed.) Like Richard, we see Lord Viren as manipulative and conniving, he is smart and knows how to take advantage of a situation so that things go in his favor. Similar to Richard, Viren locks up the heir to the throne in order to take his crown. Of course he didn’t murder anyone to get to his position (that we know of) except for the creatures he’s used for dark magic, but he is a power-hungry narcissist who did conspire to have his son kill both heirs to the throne. Richard is often regarded as one of the most evil Kings in English history, he was defeated by Henry the Seventh, who then married Edward the fourth’s daughter, Elizabeth of York, and the two of them joined the York and Lancaster houses to end the war of the roses and began the reign of the Tudors.
Callum - Henry Tudor
Tumblr media
Okay so this is actually for Callum and kinda Rayla. Don’t worry, I have some for Rayla separately but there are a few parallels in their relationship that I can’t ignore. Symbolically, Rayla and Callum remind me of King Henry the Seventh and Elizabeth of York. The War of the Roses had been going on for generations between the Lancasters and the Yorks, and these two joined the houses of Lancaster and York together with their marriage and ended the War of the Roses. After the defeat of Richard the Third, Henry became the first Tudor King and Elizabeth became his consort. But being consort, she didn’t have the same power as her husband, which is where our second couple comes in.
Tumblr media
King William the Third and Queen Mary the Second.
I’m gonna leave the War of the Roses behind now and talk about the couple who co-ruled England. Mary was the older daughter of King James the Second and she insisted that her husband rule alongside her, not as her consort but as her equal. I mention this only because even though I don’t think Callum will ever become King, I think that if he hypothetically ever did he would want Rayla to rule alongside him. Just hopefully no one dies of smallpox this time.
Rayla - Æthelflæd
Tumblr media
Before anyone asks no, I am not sure how to pronounce that, so for simplicity sake we’re gonna call her Ethel. A lot of different historical figures come to mind as potential influences for Rayla, Joan of Arc being a pretty obvious one but I feel everyone knows her story so I am going to tell you about an Anglo-Saxon queen who killed a bunch of Vikings. Ethel was born to Alfred the Great, who was known for being great, around the year 870. Usually women were not allowed political roles but Ethel said fuck that and learned how to fight, which was a good thing because her land was being invaded by the Vikings. She fought against the Viking invasion and won because she was strong and intelligent, avenged a bunch of deaths, and was just an all around awesome badass queen. Her crown was passed down to her daughter, who was later overthrown by some particularly awful male relatives. I feel Rayla embodies the spirit of a woman who could outsmart and kill a bunch of Vikings, as we’ve already seen just how smart and badass she is. However as I've said before, a lot of historical figures could also easily fit into Rayla’s character; some of the others include Grace O’Malley, Black Agnes, and some pretty fierce Scottish queens.
Claudia - Lady Jane Grey
Tumblr media
The nine days queen was named heir to the throne by her cousin, Edward the Sixth. Edward was the son of the famous Henry the Eighth and his third wife, Jane Seymour, and he feared that his older sister, Mary, would return the country to Catholicism if she took the throne so a plan was drawn up to skip both Mary and Elizabeth and place Jane on the throne. The fifteen year old Jane fainted upon hearing that she’d be queen. This plan was doomed however, as Mary was popular with the people and was already raising an army. After nine days on the throne, Jane was arrested by her own father and Mary beheaded her cousin. Now you might be wondering what this has to do with Claudia. Well like Claudia, Jane had a father who cared more for what his children could give him than he did for their wellbeing. Claudia is also just a teenage girl who wants to make her father proud and doesn’t realize she’s his pawn. That’s not to say she’s naive, she’s smart but she’s scared and will do anything to ensure her family doesn’t fall apart again. In the end, like young Jane, she is fiercely loyal to her father and wants to do right by him. Do I think this means Viren will abandon his daughter the way Jane’s father abandoned her’s? I actually don’t know. I think Viren loves his daughter very much, but he is taking advantage of her love and her loyalty. I also don’t think that Claudia will ever be beheaded (it is a kids show after all) and I don't think she will be queen but there is another parallel as she was heir to a throne for a very short time when Viren crowned himself King.
Amaya - Marguerite de Bressieux
(and Christina of Sweden, pictured below)
Tumblr media
Wanna hear about the awesome lady knight who killed rapists during the Hundred Years War? Of course you do, so allow me to introduce one of the coolest women of the 15th century. Marguerite was a Lady whose castle was captured by the Prince of Orange (not to be confused with the prince of banana) who assaulted her and other ladies of the castle. So she donned knight’s armour, rode into battle and killed her assailants, making sure to remove her helmet as they were dying so they’d know exactly who’d killed them. It was a proud moment but she unfortunately did not survive the battle. Amaya will never die in battle (we will rise up and kill the writers if that happens) but the rest of her story fits pretty well as it is about a woman overcoming hardships and wanting justice. Amaya is just as badass and awesome as a lady knight who leads armies and such. Of course, this isn’t the only historical parallel with Amaya’s character but it is the most badass. Another historical badass woman she could embody is Christina of Sweden, who lived how she wanted, dressing as a man, loving women, and smashing the patriarchy.
Ezran - Queen Elizabeth the First
Tumblr media
Okay so obviously Ezran isn’t a girl but just stick with me for a second here. Elizabeth grew up in a time of great political turmoil and wasn’t seen much as a princess as she was seen as a pawn. She was locked in the Tower of London by her sister Mary, who was a devoted Catholic who earned her nickname “Bloody Mary” by burning an estimated 300 Protestants. When Elizabeth came to power she promoted religious tolerance, and today we remember her as one of the greatest monarchs in history. Ezran has the potential to be a great monarch, one that Katolis will remember. By working alongside Elves and Dragons in Xadia, he is promoting a message of equality that the human kingdoms have yet to see.
As for the rest, I’m not really sure. I mean, lots of really awesome assassins have existed that could be Runaan but none of them really feel right. And Janai, I’m not too sure who her historical counterpart could be, possibly Arawelo (another awesome queen who said fuck the patriarchy) but that might embody her sister more. Sarai could be Queen Eleanor of Aquitaine, who was granted a divorce from her less than favourable first husband and became Queen consort of England but she could also embody aspects of Isabella of France and Cecily Neville. Soren I actually don’t have any ideas. I mean, he could be Richard the Lionheart but I’m not too sure. Ultimately I’m stumped on Soren and Janai.
So there it is, my personal analysis of The Dragon Prince characters and their potential historical counterparts. If anyone has any other theories please share them, I would love to hear other opinions.
I hope that everyone is having a good day. Stay safe out there friends.

Dragon Prince Season 3 Review
Tumblr media
Oh boy... I couldn't watch tdp season 3 until now so, yes, I'm pretty late. This time, my sister watched with me and I think she regretted it. I already talked about how I found the message of this cartoon weirdly made, and I hoped the new season would have been better... But it was worse.
I don't know where to begin... The total nonsense that is every decisions made by the principal characters? The weird comparison to Jews history that made me extremely unconfortable? Soren, aka the only well write one?
So, yes, you see the spirit. It's a harsh review. But, really, this season is badly writen. However, I will only talk about the plot, not about how I hated Callum and Rayla characters this season, or how awful the humor was.
I'm really close to make a "crack" vid about how bad this is written. But you're only gonna have the essay version. Let's begin.
Tumblr media
Dragon and Elves are racists. They don't hide it at all, the season even begun with a dragon saying how humans are inferior. They treated them as garbage, finding an insect's life more important than their. And I'm not imagining it. But doesn't the show, at a single moment address that? Not at all. The humans shouldn't feel attack or in danger and, they are bad for wanting to be treat as equal. Look, that elf tortured mentally any humans she meets, totally okay with that! This one find them disgusting and don't even care a second about their lives! She also tortured them! Aren't you sad when she dies? Oh no, that dragon that killed a ton of humans because they didn't accept to be inferior, is dead now! That's awful, his son has no dad anymore!!! Really, I'm not gonna cried a bunch of dead racists, as magical as they are. And, you dare at the end, to make the Dragon Queen being happy to see humans and elves together?!?!!?! Hajsbdbskanxvdd Is it a joke?!?!?! Have you read your own scenario? That make no sense whatsoever.
Every character arc is rush or non-existent. (Soren and Claudia being the only exception) Nobody grows, nobody learned anything. Viren is suddenly extremely evil in the flashbacks, just as if the writers realized he has a good reason to fight elves and dragons (He has) and people could be with him. Why would he keep the MoonShadow Elves in his marbles, seriously?!
Repeating "Evil" doesn't make something evil. It only shows how bad this show is written.
The weird comparison to Jews. Maybe it's us (my sister and I), but wtf?!?!?! Firstly, there is this racist thing going on, with the "inferior race" being shown as evil and who should accept its inferior place. Secondly, Viren is dress in a Jesus kind of way and, literally open a lava sea in half. Maybe, you want to show him as "the savior he thinks he is" but it's so clumsy, it's borderline anti-semitic.
The war thingy is terrible. Already, Ezran's character is dangerous. A child as a king is a very bad idea, he hasn't finished to grow up and his whole personality and life will be fuck up because of those responsabilities. But, you make him decide to accept a war against the elves so the humans don't kill each other. And then, they kill the four armies, whitout a second thought. There isn't a moment where they're like "maybe we could find a way to make them human again? So we should probably don't kill them...", they just go for it. They're "monsters" now, because their soldats doing their jobs (yes, they aren't evil, they're fighting because dragons and elves are, in fact, a menace, and Viren didn't let them choose to be transform). Does anybody have any problems with killing all those people? Nobody, not even Ezran, not even Amaya who trained all those soldiers.
Amaya, my fave, is extremely bad written and I will never forgive that. She is captured and tortured, but fall in love with her enemy in the spam of a week. She is a general, have seen her soldiers being killed by those racists elves, but joined those same elves to fight her own army with no persuasion whatsoever, only with her distrust of Viren. Her sister has been killed by that dragon, what the hell?!?!?! Janai also has a whole new personnality at the moment her (extremely racist btw) sister wants to kill Amaya. I'm totally for those two to be together, but not like that. That's extremely bad. It should have take time for those two to trust each other.
That's all for now. No, I don't think I will watch the season four if there is one. Yes, maybe Netflix rushed them and that's why it's so poorly written. Yes, I have other problems with this show but I don't wanna talk about it in this long ass post, maybe another time. And yes, I still want to write a tdp fanfiction, because the world is interesting, and also were the characters before this season. On that, I'm out.

Instagram Interview with Jesse Inocalla (Soren) and Jason Simpson (Viren)
I didn’t get every question (and I was like 15 minutes late) and this stuff is kind of paraphrased though I tried to get it as verbatim as i could:
“What do you have in common with your characters?’
Jason: I have two children and I have that connection. Everything I do is for my children and for my family.
Jesse: Soren is just me, but more earnest and more dumb. We both genuinely care about our families and our chosen families.
“What is one thing you hope people take away from watching The Dragon Prince?”
Jesse: It showcases the greyness of morality. No character is lawful good or lawful evil. There’s not real, like, evil evil.
Jason: Just humanity. Which is, like, the worst kind.
Jesse: You can’t look at anything black or white.
Jason: All three of them [Soren, Claudia, Viren], have made horrible, awful decisions, but they’re human beings and acting on their father’s wishes or the family.
Jesse: Or the kingdom.
“If Soren and Viren were elves what kind of elves would they be?”
Jesse: I think Soren would be a Sunfire elf. Would work well with the warrior spirit. Look good with a tan.
Jason: Uh, I’m not sure what kind of elf would he be?”
Jesse: Startouch elf? Because of Aaravos
Jason: I don’t know if I’m getting this right, but I love the Sunfire elves.
“What was your favorite episode to record?”
Jesse: Any episode where me and Raq get to banter. The episode with Soren in the hospital where he wants to be a poet and make Raq cringe everytime with my poetry.
Jason: The episode with Viren in the council with the queens and the dragons. The episode with Viren and his children. It hurt. Viren saying “Choose the egg over your brother.”
“What would be your character’s favorite move in the Modern world?”
Jesse: It’s Diehard.
Danika: I was thinking Fast and the Furious. And maybe that one football movie that did really poorly?
Jesse: I’d say Diehard immediately. I as thinking Soren would be into foreign films maybe.
Jason: I don’t know why, but I’m thinking Jaws.
Viren vs Voldemort. Who would win?
Jesse: Oh, Viren.
Jason: Oh, I appreciate your optimism.
Jesse: To my knowledge, Harry Potter wizards can be killed with guns.
Hogwarts Houses
Jason: I know my wife would correct me, but I feel like Viren would be a Ravenclaw.
Jesse: I think Soren is a Hufflepuff who thinks he’s a Gryffindor.
Pets
Jason: Dog. Dogs. Big dogs.
Danika: In the office, he’s headcanoned a cat person.
Jason: Okay, but a big cat. A leopard.
Jesse: But with a uncharacteristically cute name.
“What do you think was the most powerful moment in the show to you?”
Jason: I think there’s a bunch. One of the parts that brought a tear to my eye was Soren in bed in the brace couldn’t move just that full expulsion of the feelings and then Claudia coming in like a freight train trying to save her brother. But just the realization and dealing with his dad. But I look at that and it’s horrible that a kid has to think of that.
Jesse: Probably the most touching moment to me with the arc with Ellis and Ava in season 1.
“What do you think of the moment where Soren tried to murder Ellis and Ava after finding out they’d tricked him?”
Jesse: I think that was a result of Soren’s impulsiveness. When Rayla and friends... he’s... he’s so driven to really wanting to please his dad that we... we can really do messed up things.
Jason: Though we can’t really excuse... murdering a child. (very paraphrased because I don’t know exactly what he said, but based off Jesse’s response I’m pretty sure it was something along the lines of this)
Jesse: But he didn’t!
--
Again, did not get every question, but here were some I thought were really interesting!

Dark Magic Callum
Part of my ‘another 100 dragon prince aus’ oneshot collection
read on ao3
Callum takes a different route in his vision quest
You Know I Had To Do It
The hooded figure of...well, himself, stood before him. “No,” he muttered, “I wanted to learn PRIMAL magic. Like the elves and dragons have.”
“You can’t.” the figure before him said, but not in his voice. Slowly the figure morphed into the image of Lujanne, her eyes black and skin cracked like a porcelain doll. “You’re a human. Humans aren’t connected to the arcanum. You’re too ordinary.”
“But I can learn,” Callum said, “I WANT to learn. I’m willing to do anything, please.”
“Anything?” The image of Lujanne asked, and then switched to Callum again, “Then you know what you have to do for the dark magic.”
“No,” Callum said, “Rayla said….Rayla said it was dangerous. Too dark. Too...awful a thing.”
His face changed to that of Rayla’s. “And you believe everything she says?” the girl said, “She lied to you, time and time again. She tried to kill you! And you’ve only known her a week, You’ve been living in a place filled with Dark Magic ever since before you were born. Dark magic is what made your life possible!”
“Dark magic is what got us into this war,” Callum said, “That’s what my step-dad said. He no longer trusted it, and I trust him.”
“King Harrow said that the world was complicated,” The image of Rayla rippled to show him Harrow instead, “Evils have been done on both sides. The dragons were so afraid of the idea of Dark magic, they re-populated your entire race and split the country down the middle!”
“Because dark magic was killing magic creatures! Creatures like the dragons!”
The image of Harrow laughed, haunting and cruel. “No, boy. Think about it. For ages, Dragons and elves had all the magic while humans had nothing. Do you know what happens when one side has power and another doesn’t?” Callum swallowed, “Come now, you’ve read history books before. History echoes one event leading into another and then the next and the next, all of them remarkably similar. So tell me.”
Callum bowed his head. “Oppression,” he answered, “War.”
“Yes.” Harrow’s image said, “So, tell me, who is it who’s responsible for the war.”
Callum frowned. “Both,” he said, “Both parties.”
“Correct,” Harrow said, walking circles around him, “You learned well. And once they had dark magic, the humans finally had an even hand.”
“But it involves killing things.”
“So does cooking,” Harrow said, walking around, behind Callum, “Do you mourn the chicken thats made for your supper?”
“It’s different,” Callum said, trying to find arguments, “I need to eat or I’ll die.”
“You could become a vegetarian. Oh, but that’s harder, isn’t it. All about the morals until it means eating your vegetables, hm?”
Callum looked down at his feet, his mind scrambling, “I don’t want to kill things, though. It didn’t do anything to me.”
“Tell me, do you feel particularly bad about killing the little worm that saved your friend?” He asked, “Or is killing reserved for spiders you’re scared of?”
Callum swallowed, trying to think. “It’s...it’s evil.”
“Am I evil?” a new voice said behind him. Callum turned to see Claudia, beautiful as ever standing there, “Is that what you think of me?”
“You’re not Claudia,” Callum took a step back, “And Claudia...she...she’s made mistakes. She tried to kill the dragon, and take Zym back, and capture us and--”
“She did it to try and keep you safe,” Claudia said, “She used dark magic to find you, to try and save you, and save a town under dragon attack. What about that is evil?”
Callum opened and closed his mouth, “It’s just...it can be...VIREN stole my voice with Dark magic, kept me from my father, killed the dragon king.”
“A sword may be used to kill or to defend.” Claudia said, stepping forward, “Your mother was a warrior, as is your aunt and your step-dad and Soren. All of them have killed people. Do you call them evil?”
“It’s different.”
“It’s not.” Claudia said, stepping forward. She lifted the cube in Callum’s hand, and when Callum looked into her eyes, she had changed once again into his mother. “It’s a tool,” Sarai said, “A tool that can be used by the most evil of men, or the most good. You, Callum, you could use it for good.”
Callum contemplated the cube in his hand. “I could help save Rayla,” he muttered, “Save Zym, and Ezran. I could make peace with the elves and the dragons.”
“Yes, Callum,” Sarai said, holding his face in her hands, staring at him with blank black eyes, take it, take it into yourself.” and she pushed his hand, bringing the cube to his heart.
In the waking world, a dark glowing force emanated around Callum’s body, a terrifying aura that made his limbs jerk awkwardly, like a puppet on strings. “Oh Callum,” Rayla said, watching him, “Oh Callum, what have you done?”

thoughts on tdp
i wrote out some long thoughts on netflix’s “the dragon prince” over on twitter and thought that the tumblr fam might also be interested! it’s under the readmore. beware of spoilers, although tbh there isn’t much to spoil yet about this show.
the dragon prince was in between "okay" and "good" for me, overall i have a positive impression of it but i can't say it's 100% captured my interest yet. this is not really that big of a deal, since atla didn't really get good until halfway through season 2, which was like... 25 episodes in by then. so, i'm willing to keep watching for a while, but i think it's really going to have to do something more interesting in season 2 to keep my attention beyond that! characters: callum - ok so far. sokka's voice coming out of him is a little jarring at first but then i got used to it. going to need to learn more about him to start really caring about him, though. exran - my least favorite of all the main characters because we learn almost nothing about him for most of season 1. his entire character is that he steals pastries and has a pet dragon-frog. in the second to last episode, the show suddenly and inexplicably tells us that he can talk to animals, which is too bad bc had they included that from the beginning he probably would have been a way more interesting character. rayla - good so far. like the other characters, i need to know more about her to really feel invested in her. best vocal performance in the show claudia and soren - probably my favorite characters so far. soren in particular is a delight every time he's on screen. claudia is a little bit too goofy for my tastes but i like how that's contrasted with how super interested she is in evil magic king - we're all in agreement that viren obviously put the king in the bird's body, right? like, it's so obvious that i hope they do something the opposite of that and surprise me viren - i like him a lot so far, except for the fact that he seemed to be stuck with a gross monster face at the very end of the show. not sure if that was just for visual effect or if he's actually just gonna look like that from now on runaan - elf daddy here to give me the dungeon kink i crave. A+, thanks netflix i'd also join the chorus of people who think the choppy 3D animation looks like shit. it's a shame, because the backgrounds, character designs, and character models all look fantastic, and you can see in the characters' movements that there are talented animators working on the show. i just don't like or understand the decision to intentionally kill the frame rate and make it look so distractingly clunky. japanese-made 3d anime is frequently like this, so i can only guess they were trying to mimic that style, but it looks awful when they do it too and i'm confident it didn't need to be mimicked in this show. i've read they're willing to smooth things out for season 2 since this was a common complaint, and i hope they do - certain sequences only need a few more in-between frames and they'll look fine. uhh what else so far? deaf lady is awesome, although again, not really enough of her has been seen yet to have a real opinion. some of the humor doesn't land for me, but i'm a 31 year old woman so it's probably okay - same goes for some of the episode-by-episode mini-conflicts, which sometimes felt like filler even though the season is only 9 episodes long. overall i'd like to watch season 2, but i'm expecting season 2 to be more interesting than season 1 or else i'll probably not wanna keep watching beyond that (aka the voltron problem). anyway thats it, thanks for reading!!
