Anime Shows Its Power in List of 100 Influential Animation Sequences
Tumblr media
Regardless of its place of origin, animation has a long and impressive history behind it, and some of the most influential examples of the medium are in the spotlight in a recent list from Vulture. The extensive article called upon a team of experts and industry professionals alike to come up with 100 sequences that shaped animation, from 1892's Pantomimes Lumineuses by director Charles-Émile Reynaud to a key 2019 sequence from Steven Universe by Joe Johnston, Kat Morris, and Liz Artinian.
In between those bookends you will, of course, find plenty of representation from the world of anime. 24 or so of the 100 entries come from Japan, and there are some bonuses that have anime talent working in other industries, such as animator Kazuhide Tomonoga's work on the iconic title sequence for Batman: The Animated Series. The earliest comes from director Noburo Ofuji, whose Kujira (Whale) marked the first piece of Asian animation to ever be shown at the Cannes Film Festival.
All told, a variety of voices handled the entries at Vulture, backed by historical expertise from Historical expertise provided by Jerry Beck, Amelia Cook, Jason DeMarco, Maureen Furniss, Monique Henry-Hudson, Willow Catelyn Maclay, Linda Simensky, Koji Yamamura.
Tumblr media
The entire article is fascinating, so it's definitely worth a read. Here's a breakdown of the anime featured. Keep in mind that the entries are for specific sequences for the most part, such as the Postcard memories from Ashita no Joe, 'Instrumentality begins' from Evangelion, and the notorious nightclub sequence from Devilman crybaby.

Note
A weird thing about SU is how the art director has been changing semi-often: The first 12 episodes had Kevin Dart, the rest of season 1 had Elle Michalka, Full Disclosure to Bismuth had Jasmin Lai, Beta to Room for Ruby had Ricky Cometa, Elle came back for Lion 4-I Am My Mom, and now we have Liz Artinian: Elle Jasmin, and Ricky were all promoted background painters, while Liz was color supervisor on Venture Bros (a show where many SU/OK KO people hailed from)
Do you know why or is this just usual within the animation industry , bc I can't imagine why they would change story boarders so frequently

Week Four
Tumblr media
“Reunited” is the 23rd episode of the fifth season of ‘Steven Universe’, an American animated television series targeted towards children which airs on Cartoon Network and has been running since November 2013. This episode was directed by Joe Johnston and Liz Artinian, from a story by series creator Rebecca Sugar, and made LGBTQ+ history by being the first on-screen, same-sex marriage in a mainstream, G-rated show. ‘Steven Universe’ is famous for its representation of same-sex attraction and non-binary genders, Sugar quoting that, “We need to let children know that they belong in this world, you can’t wait to tell them that until after they grow up or the damage will be done”.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Rebecca Sugar claimed that Ruby and Sapphire have always been meant to represent her and her partner, using Ruby to represent herself. In the episode “Reunited”, Ruby, who typically wears a more masculine style of attire, was shown to be in an actual wedding dress with Sapphire, traditionally the more feminine of the two, wearing a suit. Sugar established in this interview that everything drawn for ‘Steven Universe’ is a very conscious decision, “down to the 24th frame of every second”, and the couple’s wedding outfits was no exception. ‘Steven Universe’ is notorious for being censored in countries outside of the United States for its LGBTQ+ themes, mainly occurring due to the television content guidelines differing around the world, as well as simply cultural differences. In the ‘Steven Universe’ episode “Jail Break”, which introduced Ruby and Sapphire to the show, the song “Stronger Than You” premiered. In the Middle East, North Africa, the Philippines, South-East Asia, and Turkey, lyrics to this song were edited to exclude any mention of Ruby and Sapphires relationship. Even though this episode aired almost four years before “Reunited”, it’s rumoured that putting Ruby in a dress and Sapphire in a suit was a decision to combat this homophobic censorship, though this is just a rumour.
When “Jail Break” was being written, Ruby and Sapphire’s relationship was in its key stages of development. During this time, same-sex marriage was not yet legal in the United States. With ‘Steven Universe’ being a modern-day, American children show, it’s no surprise that it is policed by anti-homosexuality conservatives and religious groups, an unfortunate but common instance within North American television. Sugar stated that she found herself in plenty of conversations with the higher ups of Cartoon Network where it was made clear to her that this relationship was not something that should be shown in G-rated content and that there will be a limit on how often these characters could be shown. Sugar felt strongly about making sure that their relationship was not impeded as she understood that this is what was happening to millions of children across the world because when same-sex relationships are not in this content, it’s being said to them that these relationships are not suitable for families. Thankfully, this has changed, Sugar stating that they were able to break down this idea by showing “just how wholesome these characters are, how adorable their love is”.

It was such an unforgettable experience getting to work on this show as someone who’s been drawing fan art since 2014.
