A Rant on Viserys Targaryen
His Hypocrisy
The poor dialogue and character inconsistencies in the later seasons of Game of Thrones is well talked-about, but House of the Dragon isn’t exempt.
Starting off with these two scenes here:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Viserys in these scenes could almost be a good man. Almost.
For those who may have forgotten the context, in the first scene, he confronts Daemon about the rumors of him sleeping with Rhaenyra in a brothel. Now while there are underlying issues including personal conflict with his brother, the problem that Viserys has with Daemon and Rhaenyra’s alleged affair, in his words is: She is just a girl.
In the second scene, he’s speaking to his possible bride-to-be, Laena Velaryon. The conversation between them is seemingly casual at first, as they spoke about the dragons Vhagar and Balerion. It only shifts after Laena repeats what Corlys, her father, would’ve instructed her to say. Viserys asks her afterwards what her mother told her to say to him, which was, “I wouldn’t have to bed you until I turned fourteen”.
Around the timeline of the first scene, Rhaenyra was eighteen years old. In the second scene, Laena was twelve years old.
Now according to Viserys, both of these girls are just girls.
Yet his wife, Alicent Hightower was fifteen years old when he’d married her.
Tumblr media
I’ve seen a lot of defenses for Viserys since the airing of Season One of House of the Dragon, and most of them discards him of any blame or wrong for the grooming and abuse of Alicent Hightower.
His Incompetence
Tumblr media
This particular scene is where I started to root for Rhaenyra Targaryen.
The Small Council are having a meeting when Corlys storms into the room, upset about the loss of his ships and men, due to the attacks from the Triarchy.
Viserys and the rest of the lords that make up his small council disregard his concerns, with Otto Hightower even reminding him to watch his tongue.
Let’s take a look at this map here:
Tumblr media
The Stepstones are the little islands that fall between Westeros and Essos. Anyone doing trade from the free cities of the southern coasts of Essos to anywhere in Westeros or even the northern part Essos, will more than likely have to pass through or near the step stones.
The wealth of House Velaryon in House of the Dragon can be accredited to one man, the Sea Snake, Corlys Velaryon.
Tumblr media
Was he a bit(lol) disrespectful in that scene? Yes, he was. But his concerns weren’t petty or unimportant. He built his house’s wealth on trade. Everybody, including Viserys, would’ve faced consequences in a few years, if not months, had the Triarchy been allowed to continue their raids.
Now I mentioned that a lot of my support and empathy for Rhaenyra came from that scene, mostly because of how Viserys dismisses her after she gave a suitable solution to a problem that would’ve affected his kingdom.
Tumblr media
If he’d started incorporating her into these meetings, allowed her to interact and become familiar with the small council, she would’ve been a force to be reckoned with.
That scene is why despite him naming her his heir afterwards, I don’t truly believe Viserys was an act done out of honor or duty, but rather him trying to fix the tension between him and the wife he’d killed, Aemma.
The relationship between Viserys and Rhaenyra is one that is glorified by a vast majority of the fandom, but he still failed her, his wives, his children, his brother, etc. (I will address this in part two).

The only Daughter: Prolog
Tumblr media
Note: It is my first story and i hope you like the Prolog….. ik it is very short!
English is not my native language!
Pairing: ? x Fem! Targaryen reader
Please like, comment and share 🫶
******************
You're the first born child of Rhaenyra Targaryen and Laenor Velaryon
You are the only child of Rhaenyra who has Valyrian silver hair and purple eyes or better said, you have a purple eye and a green eye like Alyssa Targaryen, the mother of your grandfather Viserys and his brother Daemon the rogue prince.
Your eyes were also the reason why your grandfather cried when he held you in his arms for the first time, because after all those years he saw his mother in your beautiful eyes again.
You were the only grandchild of Viserys where he wanted to choose the name too.
Rhaenyra and Viserys thought about to name you after the late Queen Aemma or after Viserys mother Alyssa. But your father Laenor wanted a name for you which no Targaryen or Velaryon had yet.
Rhaenyra and Viserys agreed that you need an exceptional name, one that nobody will ever forget. And so they decided to name you
y/n Velaryon.
A few weeks after your birth, there were many rumors about you and your mother. Many believed you were the true-born daughter to Prince Daemon Targaryen with Princess Rhaenyra. Viserys didn’t want to hear any of these rumours, for him you were his true-born granddaughter.
After you were born in King’s Landing, your parents made a big feast in celebration. Many lords and ladies from everywhere of the realm have arrived to see you and to be able to be there at your feast.
Your mother and father received many congratulations for your birth and many gifts were brought for you. You also received a gift from your aunt Lady Laena. After she heard about your birth, she went to the nest of her she-dragon Vhagar and chosed a black egg with red stripes for you.
That evening you were also named as the heiress of the iron throne. Both your mother and grandfather adhered to the tradition that the first-born child, whether boy or girl should inherit the throne.
But for many Lords of the realm and most of all for the Hightowers, it was bad enough that your mother Princess Rhaenyra was named as heiress of the iron throne.
But when you another princess were named as the next heiress, the protests among the lords became more, for them neither you or your mother were the rightful heirs but Aegon Targaryen your uncle and the firstborn son of the King.

Rhaenys Targaryen : hand holding.
these scenes, how small of a detail or even a fraction of it being shown. i truly believe that the physical touch of holding the counterpart she’s communicating with is a crucial point to her character. she could easily be displaying her intent with a glance. instead the additional touch of her hand has so much power to her words/demeanour. to me, as is shown and said by both eve and steve; both corlys and rhaenys are physical beings who don’t hold back showing their love for another and those close to them. with alicent, however this is different; alicent takes hers which she forcefully retreats after being held captive. ( cornered to change her house’s sworn loyalty to viserys’ wish for rhaenyra’s reign ) these scenes have such a powerful grip on me it’s absurd. here! here! to the most loyal, loving treasure on planet earth. the queen who should be.

Fact: Rhaenyra didn’t “steal” Baela and Rhaena’s birthright
Another weak greenie argument that normally wouldn’t even be worth the words I spend time typing, but it needs to be nipped in the bud immediately.
Tumblr media
Rhaenyra married Daemon for love and for Targaryen support against the greens. Unlike Alicent, who only married Viserys for power and Queen Aemma’s crown, Rhaenyra didn’t gain much from this marriage, aside from a husband who loves her, who is her pillar and strength in her war against the usurpers, and who can give her pure Targaryen heirs. Materialistically, she gained nothing. Daemon has no lands, fortune or army of his own. He has Dark Sister and a dragon.
Marrying Daemon doesn’t give Rhaenyra influence over Baela and Rhaena’s inheritance even if he is their father. Because their inheritance is not derived from Daemon, but rather their mother’s family, the Velaryons.
Corlys Velaryon is the Lord of Driftmark, and just like King Viserys chose Rhaenyra as his heir, Corlys has the right to decide who inherits Driftmark. And he made his decision pretty clear.
Corlys chose Lucerys Velaryon as his heir, despite knowing that he is not Laenor’s true-born son. He chose Lucerys, passing over his true-born granddaughters, Baela and Rhaena. It may be considered the move of a misogynist but it is ultimately his decision.
He explained his decision to Rhaenys. He cares more about the Velaryon name than the blood itself. And his granddaughters’ last names are Targaryen. Plus, he couldn’t pass over Lucerys and Joffrey, because otherwise, the rumors about their parentage would be confirmed, which would have put the boys in danger, and permanently damage Laenor’s image. Corlys loves his son, despite his nature.
And while Lucerys is not Laenor’s son, he definitely has a bit of Velaryon blood passed from his mother’s family. The mother of King Jaehaerys and Queen Alysanne was Alyssa Velaryon (Rhaenyra’s great great grandmother). It isn’t much but the boys are still half Valyrian by blood, and half Andal (just like the Hightower half-breeds).
Nevertheless, understanding the difficult situation she and the Velaryons were in (the boys couldn’t be passed over or else they would have been confirmed as non-Velaryons, while at the same time, Velaryon blood was needed on the Driftwood throne and Daemon’s girls were being passed over for the same reason their grandmother had been), Rhaenyra proposed a fair compromise:
Lucerys would inherit Driftmark but would be married to Rhaena. Their children would be a quarter Velaryon and would inherit after them. Velaryon blood would sit the Driftwood throne. That can be achieved later on with more marriages between the Velaryons. Incest is possible and solves the whole problem for them. But the name is very important, just like Corlys said. They couldn’t afford to lose the name Velaryon.
So, Rhaenyra didn’t “steal” anything from Baela and Rhaena. On the contrary, she put Rhaena’s future children in the Driftmark line of succession and promised Baela the title of future Queen Consort. Velaryon blood would eventually sit both the Iron Throne and the Driftwood one.
Corlys chose Rhaenyra’s boy as his successor. Rhaenyra made things right by ensuring Baela and Rhaena receive honor and positions of power, as they were entitled.
Are we clear?

Since fire and blood is biased and based on perspectives I rather don’t pick a side. (Specifically the dance of the dragons civil war) I understand Queen Rhaenyra fighting for her throne and I understand King Aegon ii doing it too. The war is more than the iron throne. It’s between a family. A war between brother and sister, the worst kind of wars.
