Vampire’s Kiss (1989)

Vampire’s Kiss has to be seen to be believed. It’s obvious the film was meant to be a dark horror-comedy, but I doubt anyone involved knew how funny it was going to be. It blurs the line between genuinely funny and so awful you can’t help but laugh.

Peter Loew (Nicolas Cage) is an eccentric literary agent who is growing increasingly unhinged despite his therapy sessions with Dr. Glaser (Elizabeth Ashley). After finding a bat in his apartment and a bizarre sexual encounter with a woman with unusually large fangs (Jennifer Beals) Loew comes to believes he is a vampire. He sets out to quench his thirst for blood by harassing and assaulting his secretary, Alva (Maria Conchíta Alonso).

A film that’s so bad it’s good must meet certain requirements. Firstly, it can’t be boring. There can be lulls that allow you to throw in your own jokes, but no genre can excuse boredom. It must also be memorable. It has to be bad in a variety of ways and ideally, it must be quotable. Bonus points if good actors are put in crappy roles, the plot is so loony you haven’t seen it anywhere else and it contains a scene (or scenes) you can re-enact with your friends and/or quote. Vampire’s Kiss has it all.

This is one zany plot. Is Peter an actual vampire? Are we supposed to take his descent into madness seriously? Are those people supposed to be drunk, or just pretending? How much of this is the byproduct of no one questioning director Robert Bierman while on set? You sit there, mesmerized. This has to be purposely funny. You can’t look at Nicholas Cage prowling around his office imitating Nosferatu and not assume as much… but scenes that are supposed to be unsettling are hilarious or uncomfortably funny. The objective must've been to make you laugh, but not through any means I’ve ever seen before. Even so, it’s undeniably terrible.

I could see the basic plot of the film done seriously and well. It probably wouldn’t include people’s chest suddenly having the consistency of warm butter, jumping around on desks, ambiguous hallucinations, and people reacting the way they do here, but it could be done. Instead, the bulk of the enjoyment you’ll get out of this film comes from Nicolas Cage's performance. You can’t believe how much scenery he chews. His face, his mannerisms, his outrageous recital of the alphabet! Each scene plays out like a demented pitch for a stand-up comedy tour.

There’s one scene that might make you a little uncomfortable, but trust me, it’s nothing to get worked up about. If you’ve seen the film, you know which one I’m talking about. To prepare you mentally without spoiling anything, let’s just say that there’s a scene where someone thinks another person is going to do something really bad. They don’t, but the victim is led to believe that a crime has been committed. It’s complicated to explain but basically, the “criminal” thinks it would be more believable that they be guilty of this than of what actually happened. If it starts getting icky for you, don’t worry. Nothing’s going to happen. If you know ahead of time that it’s not going to go all tasteless on you, you’ll be able to enjoy the entirety of Vampire’s Kiss without second-guessing your snarky comments at its expense.

If you like bad movies, Vampire's Kiss a gem, a must-see. If you like Nicholas Cage, you better have your cellphone handy: you’ll get such a kick out of him that you’re likely to have a heart attack. This movie is a complete disaster and you'll forward to seeing it again and again. (On Blu-ray, April 8, 2016)

MOSCOW ON THE HUDSON 1984 Romantic/Drama #6 of 500 feeling a little nostalgic for the comedic prowess of Robin Williams I decided to dig around for things that I haven’t had the time to sit down and watch. Moscow on the Hudson, a film which showed off Robin Williams early dramatic chops, as unconventional male romantic protagonist Vladimir Ivanoff, was a perfect beginning to that little adventure. Vladimir was a saxophonist for a Circus in Moscow, who, during a trip to New York City, defected from Russia during the circus troupes trip to a local Bloomingdale’s. Hiding behind Lucia‘s (Maria Conchita Alonso) perfume counter, and awkwardly under the back of her skirt, he begged her for assistance with defecting before running off into the store and ultimately being helped by Lionel (Cleavant Derricks), One of the stores security guards. Upon the arrival of the local police to assist with Vladimir’s defection, Lionel offers to let him live with him for the time being, becoming his first and closest friend in America. What follows is a love story between two immigrants from very different worlds. A story of the close bond of friendship. Here are a few of my shots of the always effervescent Maria Conchita Alonso. One shot is the premiere of Fox Searchlights' ''Jojo Rabbit' and two are from the Premiere Of Bleecker Street Media's 'Colette' at Samuel Goldwyn Theater. The other three are my on set shots of the the movie short “Return To Babylon” over a decade a go. Maria played Lupe Vélez to silent film perfection. The short was shot on a hand crank period movie camera in many different parts of LA. I was one of the set photographers. I later I had the pleasure of playing one of Ma Kettle’s sons the day Tippi Hedren was performing. Return To Babylon was a fun lively set filled with artist and Maria was key to making it happen. McBain (1991)

As far as late 80’s/early 90’s action movies go, McBain is about as generic as they get. There’s nothing innovative or fresh here at all. It’s paint-by-the-numbers and predictable.

At the end of the Vietnam war, a platoon of soldiers is leaving the country when they spot a POW camp. After being rescued, Bobby McBain (Christopher Walken) swears he will repay the debt he owes to his savior, Roberto Santos (Chick Vennera). Eighteen years later, Santos dies while attempting to free Columbia from a brutal dictatorship. Prompted to action, McBain gets his old army buddies together and gets ready to storm the country!

Writer/director James Glickenhaus delivers some pretty cool action sequences. There’s a lot of stuff blowing up, people getting shredded by machine guns, we get some aerial dog fights, and an intense knife fight at the beginning of the picture. I must also credit the film for keeping the momentum going. It isn’t boring because the plot is easy to follow and so ludicrous you want to see what’s coming next. Unfortunately, only teenagers with low standards who care about war carnage and nothing else will find it a worthwhile watch.

The characters are walking clichés. There’s the leader (Walken), the black guy (Steve James), the doctor (Thomas G. Waites), the new kid (Jay Patterson), the tech guy (Michael Ironside), and Santos’ sister Christina (María Conchita Alonso). By the end of the movie, you know exactly where everyone will end up. The only surprise is the level of contrivance the story reaches to get there. McBain and his friends approach Frank to get some money, but he offers only some equipment to them… for reasons I can’t understand considering he’s coming on the mission too. To make up the difference in funds, they decide to raid drug houses (blasting everyone in sight). Their blood bath only ends when they are guilted by a drug dealer (Luis Guzmán) about the number of deaths they have caused. Their search for funds resumes when they rob a corrupt CEO. All so they can travel to Columbia and kill everyone that points a gun towards them. Too bad their friend had to die for all this. Maybe he should have asked for their help on day one and saved the country a whole lot of grief. He had the foresight to inform his girlfriend about the favor that was owed to him, so it’s not like he forgot…

There’s nothing else to say about McBain. Honestly, I had more fun quoting episodes of Simpsons and wondering in what world Christopher Walken could be an action star than watching it. Not because it’s all that bad; because there’s nothing to remember about it except for its backward logic. I guarantee you that by this time next year, I’ll be grateful I wrote a synopsis of the film in my review. Otherwise, I would have no idea what this movie was about. (On VHS, January 9, 2016)
