It had been a long day.

Scratch that, it had been a long week. A long fucking week of watching his much-younger cousin make doe-eyes at Remus, and find excuses to touch his shoulder or arm or hand, and laugh far too loudly at his dry humor. A long week of enduring the kids and their scheming, because Ginny had got it into her head that the best way to entertain herself in this horrid house was to play matchmaker, and somehow she had pulled everyone else into it, too.

It had been a long fucking week, and Sirius didn’t feel the least bit guilty about shutting himself in his room--their room, whenever Remus was at Grimmauld for longer than a night--and laying down for a midday nap to try to stop his mounting headache in its tracks.

Well. He felt a little guilty. Because every moment shut up in this room was a moment away from Harry, and he had already missed fourteen years of Harry’s life.

But he was just so damned tired. He had lost a brother, countless friends, a lover, twelve years of his life…and now he had to watch said lover be flirted with right in front of him.

There was a knock on the door, and Sirius grunted.

“Sirius?” Harry stuck his head into the room. “You okay?”

“I’m fine, Hazza.” The nickname, not used since Harry was a baby, had slipped out accidentally his first night in Grimmauld. Sirius had tried to backtrack, embarrassed, but after the way Harry had lit up, he couldn’t not use it.

“You sure?” Harry came further into the room. “I could get Professor Lupin.”

“No need to bother him.” When Sirius had last left them, Remus had been teaching Tonks how to waltz in the library. He lifted his arm off his eyes and patted the mattress beside him. “Come sit.”

Harry obediently sat next to him, and Sirius put a hand on his shoulder. “I’m sorry I haven’t been…”

He trailed off. He had too much to apologize for. He didn’t even know where to begin.

“It’s fine,” Harry said. “You’ve been distracted.”

“Nothing could distract me from you.”

Harry gave him an unimpressed look. “Not even Professor Lupin?”

“What about Professor Lupin?”

“Do you like him?”

“‘Course I like him, Harry, he’s my best--”

“Not like that,” Harry said, cutting him off. “You know what I mean.”

Sirius sighed. “We dated when we were kids.”

“Yeah?” Harry asked. “What about now?”

“Well, I can’t exactly take him out for a candlelit dinner.”

“He sleeps in here, though, doesn’t he?”

Not as unobservant as Sirius thought, then. “He does.”

“So does he, like, know how you feel?’

“Tell me, Mr. Potter. How do I, like, feel?”

Harry grinned. “You love him.”

“Yes, I do.”

“Does he know that?”

“He bloody well should,” Sirius muttered.

“Maybe you need to remind him, then.”

When Remus came up to bed that night, Sirius grabbed the box he had been keeping in his bedside table since the beginning of the summer.

“Think fast, Lupin.”

Remus didn’t think fast, and the small box hit him square in the chest. He caught it before it fell to the floor, and popped open the lid. His lips parted in surprise.

“Is this--?”

“Found it in Orion’s things,” Sirius said. “Took me a week to get all the curses and enchantments off of it, but it’s been in the family for generations. Seems a waste to let it languish in a drawer.”��

“This,” Remus said slowly, “is the worst proposal I have ever received.”

“How many people have asked you to marry them, Moony?”

“Including this time? Technically, none.” Remus tossed the box back at him. “Because you haven’t asked, Black.”

“Oh, alright, then.” Sirius heaved himself off the bed and dropped to one knee. “Remus, light of my life, will you marry me as soon as there isn’t a price on my head?”

Remus’s lips twitched. “Oh, I suppose.”

“Some acceptance that is.”

“Some proposal that was!” Remus held out his hand anyway, and Sirius slid the gold ring on his finger.

“And now, maybe if you’re wearing that, my cousin will keep her hands off you.”

Both of Remus’s eyebrows shot up, and then a grin spread across his face.

“Sirius Black, are you jealous?”

“No!”

“You are,” Remus said, delighted. “Hold on, I need to savor this.”

“Savor it?”

“I spent years at school watching the entire student body throw themselves at you and being so jealous I could hardly think straight. You’re jealous because you think I might be interested in Tonks, and because she’s been flirting with me? Yeah, I’m going to enjoy this for a while.”

“Some fiance you are,” Sirius grumbled.

Remus kissed him, his hands going to Sirius’s belt. “I’ll make it up to you.”

george glanced down at her curiously, then down at her subtle movements that had his stomach turning in knots. the tip of his ears flushing red when her fingers grazed against his neck. he coughed; causing her to stare up at him with a confuse look, her eyebrows tilted in question. "yes?"

“you're uhm-" he paused, gulping, his cheeks burning "-if you wanted to tie me up so bad you could've just said so."

she scoffed; pulling away with an eye roll as she dropped her hand. he almost frowned at the lost of contact. almost.

"what could possibly be taking him so wrong?" lee groaned, throwing his head back in exaggeration as he, fred, and [name] waited for george to join them for breakfast.

"give him a break," she replied, hands flattening out dark robes. "he and fred pulled a pretty nasty prank on filch last night. i don't doubt he's trying to get his beauty sleep."

"yeah," fred added cockily, a sly smirk creeping onto his face. "you'd know about his beauty sleep wouldn't you princess?"

"who's he?" the redhead in question asked, haphazardly running down the dormitory's stair in an ungraceful manner. she bit back a smile, watching as her friend approached them with his tie nowhere near how neat the school needed it to be.

"you," she answered; and without much thought her hands had found it's way around on george's tie, tangling themselves between the red and gold silk.

"you're uhm-" he paused, gulping, his cheeks burning "-if you wanted to tie me up so bad you could've just said so."

she scoffed; pulling away with an eye roll as she dropped her hand. he almost frowned at the lost of contact. almost.

- "earth to [name]?" said a voice, trying to grab the said girl's attention. "hello?" they repeated.

she blinked when a paper ball bounced off of her skin; breaking out of her reverie as she turned to the owner of the voice with a questioning look. fred, who had been trying to grab her attention, stared back at her, his features just as confuse as her's.

"yes?" she prompted, an slight edge in her tone that didn't go unnoticed by her friends. fred frown, puzzled by her reaction.

"you alright?" he asked, sparing a quick look to his twin who shrugged in return, he was just as lost as he was. "you haven't said anything since you've read that letter," he said carefully, pointing a finger to a letter that laid on her lap. "we're starting to worry."

she gulped, quickly glancing at the note before looking back at the pair of them. george wore a concerned look, a silent question of whether she was fine.

"i'm okay," she supplied without questioning, picking up her fork and proceeding to eat whilst ignoring their worried looks. "it's just a letter from home."

"oh." there was an understanding silence that settled between the two redheads. knowing better on letting her take her time rather than egging her on. "sorry."

there was a paused —which was rare considering that these were the weasley twins she was talking to— and she felt more than just guilty for creating such a tension between the three of them.

"would you like to tell us what it's about?" george asked gently, placing a hand on her lower thigh; an act of comfort that the pair had developed over the years spent as friends.

"it's nothing really," she answered, brushing it off with an obviously fake smile. "it's the usual, 'you're a disappointment, can't believe we wasted our time on someone who couldn't even do the bare minimum' and oh! to not come home this christmas because 'there's no telling what i might do when i see a blood traitor like you' there's more to it but it's better to not ruin your christmas spirit."

seeing both fred and george weasley utterly speechless was a sight she was sure millions would pay to see yet here she was, barely able to hold her emotions in while she grinned brightly at them. damn, she really deserves an oscar (or whatever hermione said it was) for this.

"i think they're still disappointed that i wasn't a slytherin," she joked dryly. "though i can never be sure when i have such caring parents."

"i'm sorry about them," george started; being the more sympathetic and clear headed one of the pair. "you know mum loves you. so does ron and ginny and i reckon she wouldn't mind if you-"

"-yeah if you spend christmas with us." unlike george —who's tone was more soothing and indicative, fred cut in assertingly; wanting to shield her from the mere idea of having to spend christmas alone.

"i can't possibly do that to molly." she shook her head dismissively, the idea of being a burden burned in her mind. "it's too much stress- i mean, she's got seven kids to take care of then there's harry and hermione. i can't add myself into the mix and stress her out even more."

and true weasley fashion, both twins simultaneously quipped, "well it's either you spent christmas home with us or us here with you, your choice."

"i hate you." and those three words brings them to where they found themselves now. sitting side by side at the round table of 12 grimmauld place as molly passed down parcels upon parcels.

"this is for you darling," molly smiled kindly, passing [name] a green box.

she accepted it, muttering a small 'thank you' as she stared at the gift with curiousity. the box was small; no larger than a snitch, and it fitted perfectly within her palm.

from the corner of her eyes she could see that fred was intensely watching her, the corner of his mouth twitching which she could only assume was him resisting the urge to insist her on opening it.

she turned subtly, slowly facing him so he could see her clearly as she started picking apart the wrapping paper. it was an emerald green, a color she associated with harsh words said by the people who should've been caring for her but instead neglected her.

underneath the parchments laid a dark velvet box and by then fred have fought and failed on resisting the urge to tell her to, "open it."

she carefully lifted the top open; revealing a golden branch-like band with a raw cut pink gemstone laying atop of it. she looked up at fred, taking the small ring out of the box and slipped it on her finger. a perfect fit.

"it's rose-quartz, it's supposed to attract new love or whatever ginny said," he said, smirking. "you can thank me by naming you and george's first born fred," he added winking the signature crooked wink of his, the corner of his lips twisting with it.

"good godric," she muttered, feelings her cheeks heat up at his suggestion whilst george chuckled beside him. "i've got the same thing for you two. open it before i change my mind."

"okay, jokes jokes." fred reluctantly let go off his teasing, taking the present from her hand before passing it over to george.

george accepted it, weighing the parcel on the palm of his hand. "it's light," he commented, peeling away the wrapping paper as he talked. he lifted up his present, bemused. "a key?"

"a key," she repeated.

"a key?" he asked once more, not understanding the meaning behind his gift.

"a key."

"a key?"

"oh come on george! what are keys used for?" cut in ginny who had caught wind of their conversation. "to open doors?" he answered cluelessly. "oh merlin," ginny sighed, running a hand over her face. "she got you two a shop."

"a SHOP?" fred asked, his voice rising octaves. "YOU BOUGHT US A SHOP?"

"yes," [name] laughed. "i did. merry christmas."

"OH YOU ARE MY FAVORITE GRYFFINDOR," fred rushed to her side, pulling her into a tight hug.

george stared at her with a full glint in his eyes when she moved away from fred's suffocating arm. "i love you," he muttered, eyes widening with surprise.

"hmm?"

"i love you," george repeated, face twisting in shock by this revelation. and within a blink; george's lips found it's way on her, placing passionate soft kisses on her lips.

before she could reciprocate his kisses, george pulled away, looking at her with pure adoration in his eyes. "i love you."

"i love you too george."

fred gasps loudly, turning to face his younger sister as he yelled out, "GINNY THE RING WORKS."

The Matchmaker Pt.3

Ginny massaged her forehead. "What in Merlin's name were you thinking Fred?"

"I-I just thought if George thought someone else was trying to steal her away, it'd spur him into confessing his feelings, and then Y/N would confess hers, and it'd be happily ever after."

"And so when you realized it wasn't working, you tried to fix it by continuing to do the thing that wasn't working?" Ginny asked.

Fred shrugged. "I just thought that one more letter would be the one to do it. But, all I ended up doing was hurting George."

"And Y/N. And now probably Misty." Ginny chastised. "You know, real people do exist outside of you and George."

"What the hell is that supposed to mean?" Fred snapped. "I know other people exist."

"Yes, but I think sometimes the only person you see as a fully formed human being with actual feelings is George," argued Ginny. "Everyone else is just a background character."

Fred blinked at that but said nothing.

"Look, I get that you love George," Ginny continued. "And you want him to be happy. But, you need to stop and think about the implications of your actions instead of just running full-tilt into everything."

"So, what do I do?" Fred looked down at his fidgeting fingers, a strange heaviness settling on his heart. He wasn't used to this feeling. This horrible feeling of defeat.

"Tell George."

"You know he's gonna kill me, Ginny."

"Unlikely, though I think he'll pissed at you for a long while. And besides, did you really think you could keep it from him forever?"

Fred only shrugged. He hadn't thought that far ahead.

"What about Y/N?" He asked.

"I'll tell her."

"Really?" Fred asked. "You'd do that for me?"

"No. I'm doing it for Y/N." Ginny said. "If you tell her, she'll kill you on sight, and I don't want my friend going to Azkaban."

Fred only nodded, his eyes darting down and away from her penetrating gaze.

He'd never seen George like this. Fred swallowed hard and backed away from his twin.

"You did WHAT?" George stepped toward his brother, slow and deliberate. A deadly calm had settled over the room as if the two brothers stood in the eye of a hurricane, just moments before the second wave of destruction slammed into them.

"How could you think this was a good idea?" George tried to maintain his composure, but with every word, the wreckage caused by Fred's asinine actions clawed themselves deeper into him, pulsing through his veins. "You let me and Y/N go through hell for the past three weeks, knowing that you could've stopped it at any time. But, you didn't, and at this point, I don't know if there's anything left to salvage."

George groaned, throwing his hands in the air. "And Misty. Fuck. I stupidly asked her out. Godric, I'm such an asshole."

"Georgie, I know I fucked up. I never wanted any of this to happen. I just thought‐‐"

"No," George cut him off. "You didn't think! You never do!"

Fred looked down, shuffling his feet. "I'm sorry. I really am."

George sighed, suddenly exhausted. Try as he might, he couldn't stay angry with Fred for very long. He knew his twin was only trying to help. "Yeah, I know," George said and threw on his cloak. "But, saying sorry isn't going to fix this."

"Wh-where are you going?" Fred couldn't hide the worry in his voice.

"To find Y/N and then to find Misty." George threw Fred's cloak to him. "And you're coming with me. You're going to tell Y/N."

"Ginny's telling Y/N."

George stopped at that. "She's doing that for you?"

Fred shook his head. "No. She's doing it for Y/N. She said Y/N would kill me on sight, and Ginny didn't want her going to Azkaban."

"Excellent point," George agreed, tilting his head in thought. "Ok. New plan. We're gonna find Misty first."

"Why?"

"If Ginny's already told Y/N, she'll need some time cool down. And if we tell Misty first, I can spend all the time I need afterward with Y/N."

"You're sure?"

"Yeah." George nodded. "Now, c'mon."

"He did WHAT?" Y/N's eyes went wide. "You mean--?"

"Yep." Ginny sighed. "Fred wrote every single one."

"I don't understand. Why would he do that?"

"The short explanation is because he's an idiot." Ginny said. "The long one is because he wanted to get George to confess his feelings for you, and Fred thought if he made it look like someone else was making a move, George would open up to you."

Y/N plopped down on the bed next to Ginny. "George has feelings for me? Like romantic feelings?"

"Of course," Ginny smiled. "Everybody knows that, except for you, apparently. And everybody knows you feel the same way about him, except for George, of course."

Y/N stared at the floor, her brain struggling to process this new information. How had she had she been so oblivious? Closing her eyes, she let her mind drift back over all the years they'd known each other and all the little extra things George did for her. Things he didn't do for anyone else. Even Fred. But, not once, in all that time, had she stopped to consider what it all actually meant.

"I need to talk to him," Y/N said, jumping up to grab her cloak before a thought struck her, stopping dead in her tracks. She looked back at Ginny. "Misty. What about her?"

"George is an idiot too, you know. But I figure he's going to call off his date with her."

"This morning? The day of the date?" Y/N asked. "That--that's not going to be pretty. I know Misty. She'll not take things well."

"I reckon it's better than trying to explain everything afterward." Ginny pointed out.

"Yeah, that's true," Y/N agreed, putting on her cloak and handing Ginny hers.

The slap echoed down the hallway as students gathered around to watch the spectacle as it unfolded.

George rubbed his stinging cheek while Misty screamed at him, her face bright red. "Fuck you George Weasley! Fuck you for thinking you could use me like that!"

"I'm sorry, I never intended--," George started, but was silenced by her turning away from him and slapping Fred.

"That's for me," she said, and then before Fred could recover, she backhanded him across the other cheek. "And that's for Y/N."

With a satisfied grin, Misty stood back, admiring her handiwork before she whirled around and strode away, parting the crowd as she went.

When no one answered the twins' door, Y/N and Ginny went in search of them. They walked in on the debacle just in time to see Misty slap George and then double-slap Fred.

"Woah," Ginny commented, a look of surprise and admiration on her face.

"I would've never thought she had it in her," Y/N added, equally stunned.

"I expected her to be upset," George said, still rubbing his cheek.

"But I didn't expect that." Fred continued, rubbing both cheeks.

"Neither did we," a familiar voice piped up behind them.

"But we were quite impressed," another added.

The twins turned around and found themselves face-to-face with Ginny and Y/N.

"Oh, uh, hi." George's unscathed cheek turned bright red to match the other one, a sheepish grin appearing on his face.

"Hi," Y/N said, returning his grin.

The two of them stood there shifting from one foot to the other, sharing shy glances until Ginny cleared her throat. "Sorry to interrupt whatever it is that the two of you are doing, but wouldn't you like to go somewhere private and talk?"

Y/N's cheeks now matched George's. "Yeah," she said, looking to the younger twin, who nodded in agreement. "Yeah, we would."

George and Y/N sat side by side on his bed, hands resting beside them, their pinkies barely brushing against each other. They'd been best friends since their first year when he and Fred came bounding into the train compartment where she was sitting. And now, here they were, nervous and shy, like two ridiculous, lovesick dolts, which after some thought, Y/N supposed they were.

Keeping her eyes straight ahead, Y/N moved her pinky to intertwine with his. George looked down, lightheaded from the sudden euphoria surging through him. Shifting closer, he encompassed her hand in his own.

Y/N's heart hammered inside her chest as she turned to look at him, the intensity of her gaze matching his, both of them knowing what would happen next. Every step they'd taken since the day they'd met had led them to this moment.

It was a moment in which time seemed to stop just for them. George's fingers traced her jawline, featherlight, raising goosebumps down her arms. He searched her eyes for any sign of doubt. But, as she inched closer to him, with her lips curved upward in a small smile, he knew she wanted this just as much as he did.

Y/N watched as George's eyes drank her in. He was close. So close. She could feel the pounding of his heart as it beat in time with hers. Y/N smiled as she slipped her free hand around the back of his neck, pulling him to her.

Their lips met for the first time, gentle and careful at first, as if the other was made of spun glass that would shatter under the lightest of pressure, then slowly deepening as they fell further and further into each other until they longer knew where one ended and the other began.

It was a moment that if they could've stretched it into infinity, they would have happily done so. But time waits for no one, and eventually, they had to return to the real world.

"I've dreamed of doing that for so long," George admitted once they pulled away.

"Me too."

"Was it as good as you thought it would be?"

Y/N smiled. "No, it was better."

George blushed in spite of himself and leaned in for another kiss, stopping just a hairsbreath from her lips. "There's something I've been wanting to tell you for a long time."

"Hmm?"

"I love you."

Y/N's smile widened. "I love you too."

"Do I really have to do this?" Fred asked as they entered the Great Hall for breakfast.

"Yes," George, Y/N, and Ginny answered in unison.

"Fine," Fred rolled his eyes and proceeded to stand upon the table while his compatriots took their seats around him.

Fred cleared his throat and then yelled at the top of his lungs. "ATTENTION HOGWARTS, I HAVE AN ANNOUNCEMENT TO MAKE." The room fell into silence. "I, FREDERICK GIDEON WEASLEY AM AN IDIOT WHO CANNOT MIND HIS OWN BUSINESS. I VOW, HERE AND NOW, TO NEVER AGAIN STICK MY NOSE INTO ANYONE ELSE'S LOVE LIFE. THIS IS MY SOLEMN PROMISE."

Fred looked down to George, who simply nodded. Then, jumping down, the older twin took his usual seat.

"Happy now?" He asked.

"Ecstatic." George said, a devilish grin spread across his face.

Writ, @writcraft, a creator I've long admired! Writer of excellent stories, thinker of excellent thoughts, human of excellent taste! They've written some of my favorite fics, such as How We Were Warriors and The Beating of this Fragile Heart. Oh and not to forget A Lion's Heart! (Not me sneakily sneaking in extra recs for you all.) (As if this list isn't stupidly long to begin with hahaha.) In fairness, I did strive to choose works I think need more attention and hype! Ones I love dearly that I need others to chat with about! Plenty of people know the above fics...it's the below fics I need to scream about!

But before we get there...Well, Writ is more than just a fabulous writer. They've modded many a fest and event over the years. "THE BUCCANEERS" (1995) Review

Years ago, I had anticipating watching for the first time, "THE BUCCANEERS", the 1995 television adaptation of Edith Wharton’s last novel. After all, I have been a major fan of "THE AGE OF INNOCENCE", Martin Scorcese’s 1993 adaptation of Wharton’s award-winning 1920 novel for years. But my eager anticipating nearly ebbed away, when I discovered that "THE BUCCANEERS" only managed to rouse a lukewarm reception from many television critics.

The five-part miniseries turned out to be an unusual production from the BBC. One, it was based upon a novel written by an American author – namely Edith Wharton. There have been other British television productions based upon the literary works of an American, but they are very rare. Another interesting aspect of Wharton’s "The Age of Innocence" is that the author did not finish it, due to her death at the age of 75. Fifty-six years later, Wharton scholar Marion Mainwaring finished the novel, which was published by Viking. Around the same time, the BBC hired screenwriter Maggie Wadey to adapt and finish the novel for the television adaptation. As a result the novel has two slightly different endings. Another aspect of this miniseries that struck me as unusual was that instead of hiring British actresses to portray four of the five leads, the BBC hired four Amercian actresses – Carla Gugino, Mira Sorvino, Alison Elliott and Rya Kihlstedt.

The plotline for "THE BUCCANEERS" is very simple. The story begins in 1873 Newport, Rhode Island; in which two sisters of a noveau riche businessman and their two friends are introduced – Virginia "Ginny" and Annabel "Nan" St. George, Conchita "Connie" Closson and Elizabeth "Lizzy" Elmsworth. Whereas the Brazilian born Conchita manages to snare Lord Richard Marabel, the dissolute second son of the Marquess of Brightlingsea, the other three girls struggle to find a place amongst the members of old New York society. When a prank committed by Ginny and Lizzy backfires, Nan’s English governess Laura Testvalley proposes to Mrs. St. George that Ginny and Nan have a London season amongst the upper-class British. She argues that their acceptance by the British high society would assure them a place amongst the upper-class New Yorkers. Due to their friendship with the vibrant Conchita, Virginia and Annabel are introduced to Lord Richard’s family – the impoverished Brightlingseas and their neighbors, the equally impoverished Sir Helmsey Thwaite and his son Guy. As they get settled to conquer British society, Ginny and Nan are surprised by the arrival of Lizzy, who has arrived in Britain for her own season.

Although the girls’ original purpose for visiting Britain was to enjoy a London season, a friend of Laura Testvalley has other plans for them. Thirty years earlier, the American born Jackie March had been engaged to a British aristocrat – namely the very young Lord Brightlingsea, who abandoned her at the altar. Miss March remained in Britain and became something of a sponsor/matchmaker for young society girls. It was Miss March who recommended that the visiting Americans rent a villa owned by one of her former sponsors, Lady Idina Hutton. She also recommended that the girls do more than just enjoy a London season in order to impress old New York society. She recommended that they consider marrying into upper-class British society. Miss March’s plans eventually come to fruition:

*Virginia or namely her father’s wealth attracted the attention of Lady Idina Hutton’s lover and Lord Richard’s older brother, Lord Seadown.

*Lizzy ended up marrying a self-made aspiring politician named Hector Robinson

*Annabel fell in love with Guy Thwaite, but ended up marrying the very wealthy Julian Folyat, Duke of Trevennick; when Guy left Britain to find his fortune in South America.

As I had stated earlier, most critics were not initially kind to "THE BUCCANEERS". Most British critics dismissed it as a costumed soap opera of the second-rate kind, with an ending that had been "Hollywoodized" (happy ending). These same critics also accused the miniseries of mocking the British aristocracy. The American critics, at least those who considered themselves Wharton purists, accused the miniseries’ screenwriter, Maggie Waddey, of changing the elements of the author’s story by including topics such as marital rape and homosexuality. Personally, I found all of these arguments irrelevant. Most dramas about personal lives – whether first-rate or not – tend to possess soap-operish elements. This hostility toward soap operas has always struck me as infantile and irrelevant. And why are all Hollywood productions guilty of having a happy ending, when that has not been the case? Other literary works and their adaptations have mocked the British aristocracy. Why was there such a big hullabaloo over how the aristocracy was portrayed in this particular story? As for the additions of marital rape and homosexuality, these elements did no harm to the story, as far as I am concerned. And I must admit that I have become increasingly weary of demands that all movie or television adaptations should be completely faithful to their literary source. Such demands strike me as impractical.

My complaints about "THE BUCCANEERS" are very few. In fact, I only have two. The first time I ever saw actress Gwen Humble on the television screen was in a miniseries called "THE REBELS", an adaptation of a John Jakes novel. Although I had no problems with her performance in that particular production, I must admit that I had a problem with her performance as Virginia and Annabel’s mother, Mrs. St. George. I understand that Mrs. St. George was supposed to be a shallow and somewhat silly woman. But I feel that Humble went a little too far in conveying those certain traits. Her performance struck me as exaggerated and a little amateurish. Another problem I had with "THE BUCCANEERS" is a rather minor one. It has to do with Virginia’s husband, Lord Seadown. His father is a marquess – which is ranked somewhere between a duke and an earl (count). As the eldest son, he is entitled to a courtesy title. But what was Seadown’s courtesy title? His younger brother was called Lord Richard Marable, which is correct for the younger son of a marquess. The courtesy title for the eldest son of a marquess is usually an earldom – namely Earl of Something. Was Seadown’s name a courtesy title - Earl of Seadown? Or was he supposed to be regarded as Lord Seadown Marable? If the latter, what was the courtesy title he used? I found it all slightly confusing.

However, "THE BUCCANEERS" has been one of my all time favorite miniseries, ever since I first saw it. And there is so much about it that has made it such a favorite of mine. One, producer-director Philip hired a production crew that did justice to Wharton’s story. The miniseries featured some elegant locations that served as the story’s various settings. Some of these locations included Castle Howard, Burghley House and Newport, Rhode Island. I also enjoyed Remi Adefarasin’s photography. It had a deep and rich color that did justice to a story filled with emotions and passion. Colin Towns provided an elegant and entertaining score that remained memorable for me, since the first time I heard it years ago. But it was Rosalind Ebbutt’s costumes that really blew my mind. She provided exquisitely outfits that were beautiful and elegant – especially those for the lead actresses. More importantly, her costumes not only reflected the fashions wore by the American and British upper-classes during the 1870s, they also reflected the change in the main characters’ status and in women’s fashion throughout the decade, as the following photographs show:

Another one of the major virtues of "THE BUCCANEERS" turned out to be its cast. Wharton’s novel is filled with interesting characters. And Saville and his casting director did an excellent job in finding the right actor/actress for the right role. Aside from Gwen Humble’s portrayal of Mrs. St. George, there were so many first-rate performances in the miniseries that it would take me another article just to describe them. But the supporting performances that stood out for me came from the likes of Sheila Hancock, whose portrayal of the Dowager Duchess of Trevenick struck me as an expert mixture of cool haughtiness, sharp wisdom and long suffering; Michael Kitchen, who skillfully conveyed both the charming and shallow nature of Sir Helmsley Thwaite; Jenny Agutter, who was excellent as Lady Idina Hatton, Lord Seadown’s insecure and tragic mistress; Dinsdale Landen and Rosemary Leach, who both portrayed the Marquess and Marchioness of Brightlingsea with a mixture of class haughtiness, charm and great humor; Peter M. Goetz, who seemed to personify the self-made 19th century American businessman; and Connie Booth, who gave one of her best performances as the ambitious and sharp-minded Jackie March.

Richard Huw gave a humorous, yet intelligent performance as Hector Robinson, the ambitious young Member of Parliament who ends up winning Lizzy Elmsworth’s hand. And Mark Tandy was pretty solid as Lord Brightlingsea’s heir, the mercenary Lord Seadown who marries Virginia for Colonel St. George’s money. I was very impressed by Ronan Vibert’s portrayal of the dissolute Lord Richard Marabel, Conchita’s husband and Lord Brightlingsea’s younger son. But the two male performances that really impressed me came from Greg Wise and James Frain. The latter portrayed the haughty Julian Duke of Trevenick, who manages to win the hand Annabel St. George (much to the surprise of her governess), before alienating her with his lack of skills as a husband. Frain could have easily portrayed Julian as a one-note villain, especially when one considers the act of marital rape that his character committed against his wife in Episode Three. Being the skillful actor that he is, Frain conveyed all facets of Julian’s personality – both the good and the bad. And his assertion near the end of Episode Four that he is "not a monster" may have been one of Frain’s finest moments on screen. Greg Wise probably gave one of what I consider to be three of his best career performances in his portrayal of Guy Thwaite, Sir Helmsley’s only son. His Guy could have been one of your typical handsome, romantic heroes. But Wise did an excellent job in revealing how Guy’s insecurities regarding his lack of funds led him to lose Annabel to Julian. And he also conveyed how in the throes of love, Guy could be a slightly selfish man with no thought to how his "friendship" with Annabel might affect her social standing. Thanks to Wise’s performance, his Guy Thwaite proved to be equally complex.

We finally come to our five leads in the story – the four American heiresses and Annabel St. George’s English governess, Laura Testvalley. I have noticed that whenever someone brings up Cheri Lunghi, he or she inevitable brings up her role in "THE BUCCANEERS", the Anglo-Italian governess Miss Testvalley. I certainly cannot blame them. Lunghi proved to be the glue that held the story together, skillfully serving as its eyes and narrator at the beginning of each episode. Rya Kihlstedt gave a charming and solid performance as the blunt and level-headed Lizzy Elmsworth, who seemed more impressed by Hector Robinson’s ambitions than any aristocrat. She and Richard Huw managed to create a very credible screen presence. Alison Elliott’s Virginia St. George proved to be one of the most complicated characters in the story. Thanks to the actress’ excellent performance, she conveyed Virginia’s haughtiness and obsession with being connected to an aristocratic family; and at the same time, garnered sympathy by expressing the character’s love for her husband and disappointment upon discovering that he had only married her for money. And less than a year before she won her Academy Award, Mira Sorvino proved just how first-rate she could be as an actress in her portrayal of the Brazilian-born Conchita Closson. Her Conchita was a delicious and complicated minx torn by her desire for the luxurious and glamorous lifestyle of the British aristocracy and her contempt for what she deemed as their cold personalities. If Cheri Lunghi’s Laura Testvalley was the story’s eyes and narrator, Carla Gugino’s Annabel St. George aka the Duchess of Trevenick proved to be the heart and soul of "THE BUCCANEERS". Thanks to Gugino’s superb performance, the actress literally transformed Nan from the childish and naïve sixteen year-old girl, to the bewildered nineteen year-old bride and finally to the weary twenty-one year-old wife, disappointed by a failed marriage and in love with another man. There are times that I wondered if any other actress could have accomplished what she did. It seemed a pity that none of the major television and critics awards organizations never acknowledged her performance with a nomination.

Many critics have heaped a great deal of scorn upon Maggie Wadey’s adaptation of Wharton’s novel. Frankly, I believe this scorn was undeserved. I may not have been that impressed by her other works, but I honestly believe that "THE BUCCANEERS" was her masterpiece by far. Many accused her of failing to adapt Wharton’s "spirit" or "style" by including marital rape and homosexuality into the story. Since both topics where added without any tasteless sensationalism, I had no problems with these additions. And Wadey also made sure to give the story’s happy ending something of a bittersweet edge. Despite leaving Julian for the man she loved, Guy Thwaite, Annabel found herself ostracized by society and especially by her sister Virginia – as was proven at the Marquess of Brightlingsea’s funeral. Annabel and Guy’s elopement also left the latter disinherited by his father, Sir Helmsley. And her assistance in the elopement left Laura Testvalley rejected by Sir Helmsley and unemployed. So much for the "happy ending". Because the story revolved around four American heiresses marrying into the British upper-classes, "THE BUCCANEERS" also proved to be an interesting study in culture clash between two Western nations in the mid-to-late nineteenth century. But in all of the articles I have read about the miniseries, I find it surprising that no one has bothered to noticed that the topic of the continuing decline of the British aristocracy was also mentioned . . . more than once. It almost became a secondary theme. The Brightlingseas’ interest in the St. George family certainly seemed an indication that they were more willing to marry money – regardless from where it came – rather than find a way to earn it. This seemed like a far cry from Guy Thwaite, who preferred to create his own wealth with two years in South America, rather than marry it. And the character of the Marquess of Brightlingsea literally became a symbol of the aristocracy’s decline in scenes like a heated conversation between him and Hector Robinson; and a speech by Guy Thwaite to the House of Commons during a montage that featured of his death.

Now that I think about it, why should I care what others feel about "THE BUCCANEERS"? Every time I watch it, I always fall in love with the miniseries over and over again. Maggie Wadey wrote an excellent adaptation of Wharton’s novel – probably her best work or masterpiece, as far as I am concerned. Led by the likes of Carla Gugino, Cheri Lunghi, Greg Wise and James Frain, the cast proved to be first-rate. And Philip Saville did justice to both the cast and Wadey’s screenplay in his direction of the miniseries.
