X-Files Collector's Edition: S9, The Season of Secret Dad (Long Fics)
There will never be enough content to make up for the robbery of canon post S8-- parenthood and readjustment and healing for Mulder and Scully with their son, whether that has a Conspiracy attached to it or not. These fics try to bridge that gap (and shoutout to @welsharcher's coining of the phrase "Season of Secret Dad".)
These might be repeats from other lists; but I wanted to be thorough~.
**Note**: Will ghost edit later~.
Loose chronological order below~
Fics Where Mulder Stays
MissAnnThropic's Not the Same
""Awww..." Lela made the tight sound of womanly adoration, "you have a baby? Do you have a picture of him?"
Mulder flashed her a bright smile a moment, his expression saying as clear as anything 'of course I do, I'm a new father, aren't I?' and he reached into his back pocket and withdrew his wallet....
Tom leaned over to look and Miranda leaned over him to see the picture too.
It was a picture of a very small baby on his back, a stuffed green alien toy in his hand's limp grip as it rested against his belly. Tom smiled at that, despite his earlier attitude toward Fox Mulder and the whole little green men business.""
Colton is floored by how much Fox Mulder has matured.
Tess's (Ao3) The New Truth, A Project 09x00
""Startled, Scully's eyes popped open. She had been enjoying the quiet coziness of the day; tucked into the apartment with the two people she loved most in the world while rain tapped in a steady beat against the windows. She felt Mulder's steady gaze, even as she steadfastly refused to meet it and she knew that the time of living in a world of 'let's pretend' had just come to a crashing end.
"These last few weeks of being a normal little family have been wonderful," Mulder said softly. "But, Scully..." he scooted across the cushions and leaned into her side. "We're not normal people.""
Mulder and Scully have a tough conversation weighing all their options. He's not leaving; but Scully will have to return to the FBI parttime to keep its resources at their fingertips.
Lapsed_Scholar's Season 9 Rewrites and Musings
MASTERFUL fill-in series: Mulder is a stay-at-home dad during the entire events of S9. Love this to death. Below are the reworked episodes:
A Devil's Office
""Monica nodded, and they sat in contemplative silence for a few moments, before Mulder broke it.
“You know, he looks like my sister.”
She looked up—he was looking down at William again. She couldn’t see his expression, but his voice was soft and tender, full of wonder and tinged with nostalgia. Fox Mulder the man was turning out to be a very different entity from Spooky Mulder the legend.
“His eyes are hers—Dana’s, I mean—but... Maybe my mother would have told you that he looks like me, I don’t know; I never saw myself as a baby. But I remember how my sister looked. It was thirty-five years ago, but I still remember looking down at her in amazement when my parents brought her home....”
Mulder looked back down at William, ran his finger along his son’s cheek.""
Mulder is settling into stay-at-home parenthood, overcoming his feelings of uselessness with a very contented baby... and finally giving in to a consultation request from John Doggett.
Dispatches
""Hey, Scully. You’re interrupting a monumental construction project. It’s the tallest tower of blocks yet built by man.”
“Mmhm. And what is William doing while you’re assembling this feat of modern engineering?”
“I’ll have you know this is a joint project. William is...in charge of grabbing the construction material and sticking it in his mouth.""
A dialogue only piece (but it's one of my absolute favorites) featuring a VERY ticked off Scully fuming over a pain-in-her-side bug doctor and a VERY amused Mulder having a blast sympathizing and egging her on.
Semper Fi
""Speaking of... A familiar form flops itself into the chair next to his. He honestly should have expected this.
“Fancy meeting you here, sir.” Fox Mulder has a peculiar way of delivering inane pleasantries. His expression and tone are bland enough to pass scrutiny, but something in his bearing always implies that a lively mind is humming away under the surface.""
Scully rants to Mulder about Kersh purposefully interfering in Reyes and Skinner's attempts to bring Doggett home. He's on the case.
Denial
""She calls home because she needs a break from the existential, or maybe because she needs another opinion on it. She sits in the hospital cafeteria and leans her head against a window.
She asks Mulder for stories of William, and because they are who they are, he innately understands why she’s asking and indulges her thoroughly.""
Mulder understands that Scully is denying her gut; and convinces her to look deeper into Doggett's claims that Reyes isn't dead.
Extreme Probabilities
""The two of them might have made an impressive pair of dashing FBI agents for that Bureau recruiting pamphlet, except they both looked bedraggled. John clearly hadn’t slept in awhile. He had dark circles under red eyes and the look of exhausted intensity that comes from staring at evidence for too long. His suit was wrinkled and rumpled, and there was a coffee stain on his shirt. Mulder had clearly been asleep not too long ago. His hair was sleep-mussed, and he was wearing what he usually wore to bed (an undershirt and lounge pants) coupled with running shoes and a holster. His serious and tense expression made for a marked contrast with the ridiculous outfit.
Reality usually is quite different from the pamphlet.""
Mulder doesn't believe in numerology; but he does gets pulled into this crack case about God and Burt Reynolds anyway.
A Quiet Friday Evening
""The phone rings. Scully frowns.
“That must be the sheriff. Here, Mulder, hold this open and keep the abdominal wall spread.” She hands him the salad tongs before he can ask if maybe he can answer the phone instead. He stares after her in speechless misery.
He is going to buy new kitchen utensils. They are throwing all of these away, and absolutely nothing Scully can say about boiling water or exceedingly high temperatures or using the autoclave at work will convince him otherwise.""
Mulder gets roped into a cat autopsy. Yes, it's gold.
Valor (Discretion)
""You’ve had a lot going on lately, Mulder,” Frohike gestured toward the baby. He also meant to include, of course, the whole abduction-death-and-resurrection ordeal. Most of the people who loved Mulder didn’t want to reference it directly, so, despite how centrally traumatic it was, it predominately remained in alluded subtext. “We didn’t think our problems should add to yours.”
Mulder stared for a moment. He had the audacity to look hurt. “I thought we were friends. If you have problems this serious—especially ones I can help you solve—I want to know about them. After all you’ve done for me—all you’ve done for Scully—how could you not tell me when you needed help?""
A biohazard, TLG running around like chickens, Morris Fletcher... and Mulder insisting his friends call the authorities and act rationally.
Catastrophe
""He didn’t have to wait for long. About five minutes after he had arrived, the doors to the elevator slid open, and Mulder emerged, maneuvering a stroller carefully over the gap between elevator and floor. His eyebrows raised fractionally with surprise when he saw John, but he otherwise kept his composure. John studied him. He was looking better these days, although he still had a slightly uneasy air about him, a man who wasn’t fully confident of his place in the world, not entirely grounded. But he was clearly trying, and he looked more at home in his own skin than John had ever seen him. At this moment, in fact, he appeared steadier than John felt.
“Agent Doggett,” greeted Mulder, quietly, once he had reached the apartment door. John glanced down into the stroller; William was peacefully asleep, his head turned to the side and his mouth moving occasionally in the phantom nursing of sleeping infants.""
Doggett asks Mulder to write a profile on his son's killer, while Scully is there to support her partner after he gets sucked into the brutal randomness of the crime. The rest of the fic winds up to her disappearance while on a case Mulder asked her not work on: postpartum depression, Mulder's feelings of displacement in her life, and unfinished conversations between them. (Unfinished fic.)
Jenna Tooms/misslucyjane’s (Ao3, mulderscreek)
An Acceptable Level of Happiness (Site)
""Sunday afternoon I spread an old sheet on the kitchen floor and tie a dishtowel around Mulder's neck. He sits stiffly in the kitchen chair, his eyes on Malcolm. "Warn me," he says, his hands clenching.
"I know." I run my fingers through his hair, combing it out. I never start cutting right away. First I rub his temples and massage his scalp with my fingertips, trying to soothe him until his eyes close. I rub the base of his neck and his shoulders too, trying to reassure him that nothing's going to hurt him here. He often says he'd know my hands anywhere.
"I'm picking up the scissors now," I say when he's relaxed. He acknowledges this with a grunt, his head tilted forward....
I keep one hand in his hair as I trim it, scraping my nails lightly against his scalp. There is one scar on his head and every time my fingertips pass over it my hands tremble. They cut him open everywhere.""
Mulder and Scully are struggling with their separate PTSDs but willing to stick it out, thick or thin. She processes most of her emotions and draws closer to her partner at the Scully family Christmas; and he gets to meet Charlie and feel like a human again.

""Mulder had the door open before she got there, holding a squalling William in his arms. He raised his eyebrows at her slightly.
"Sorry," Scully said. "You got my message, didn't you?" She set the groceries down on the kitchen table, pushing aside an array of toys and teething rings to do so. She could see what kind of day her men had.
"Yeah," Mulder said. "I was here, I just couldn't get Limpet Boy to let go so I could answer the phone.""
Mulder is a stay-at-home dad battling the Conspiracy. Scully and their new partner get a call and drop-in from Phoebe, who is relatives with a higher-up in the Syndicate.
155 Words - Thankful
""Not long ago, he discovered that all he cared about had been pared down to a few essentials, and it wasn't hard to leave the rest behind.
Perhaps dying and returning is responsible for such clarity; but he hasn't analyzed it.""
Mulder marvels that Scully tracked him down with a baby in tow.

""Who was that?" Mulder asked.
"Monica."
"Reyes? What's she doing there?"
"No one is quite sure," Scully said, settling herself on the bunk. "Least of all her."
There was a brief pause. "Excuse me?
"She asked if you could call John about her boots."
Another pause, this one a little longer. "I'm supposed to make a booty-call to John Doggett?""
Scully and Reyes team up on an investigation in Mexico: while Scully catches Mulder up on suspicious connections to Russians and Tunguska, Monica meets a possible love interest and starts to notice weird, suspicious activities from some of the other workers.
Under Construction (Goss)
""Then I got the arms. The *pick-me-up* arms. The *you're-my-dad- and-the-toes-of-my-tiny-little-Reeboks-belong-in-your-abs-pick-me-up* arms. I shouldn't hesitate - I shouldn't have to hesitate - but I always do. Anytime Scully noticed, she tried hard to look like she was trying hard not to look pained, but I saw it, anyway. It wasn't that I didn't want to hold William - hold my son. It was just that, every time I reached for him, for an instant I was sure my arms were going to pass right through him and I'd find myself passed out on the cold cement floor of my cell again, clutching my chest and aching for all I'd lost. If the price I had to pay to keep this dream up and running was never really holding it, I was prepared to accept that.
But William wasn't. "Up!" he insisted, so I accommodated.
He was solid. Real. I'm his dad. His toes do belong in my abs.
I kissed his forehead. Why isn't everything this simple?""
Mulder is returned with muddled memories of S8/S9 events, a truckload of PTSD, and a boatload of feeling that he's in everyone's way. Will already loves him; but Maggie hates his guts, and Scully isn't ready yet to smooth over that problem. And, Mulder finds out, everyone had been matchmaking her with Ellen's brother-in-law.
jeri's (MC) Ahonis (MC)
""Oh sure, Mulder could come by the office anytime and visit. Doggett often asked Scully to bring Mulder and William along on lunch breaks, or just have them drop in for a change of pace. But both Scully and Mulder felt it was best if he and the baby stayed clear of the FBI; Kersh may have left the Bureau, but he was still out there, reporting to someone. There was no guarantee that the new Deputy Director wasn't just as dirty as Kersh was.""
Doggett and Reyes work on bustin' a case that has connections to Marita Covarrubias. Mulder is only mentioned by Scully as a stay-at-home dad here and there.

""Mulder sprawls across the black leather sofa in what is shortly to be his new home office. "It's so good to see you," he tells it. "We'll never be parted again."
"A boy and his couch. It's like a Norman Rockwell painting," Scully says, setting down a cardboard box on the desk. She picks up a container of fish food and taps a few flakes into the aquarium which is, for now, resting on the desk.
"She's just jealous," Mulder murmurs to the armrest. "She doesn't understand our love.""
These fics focus on Mulder and Scully parenting their magically-abled child in the leadup to an, unfortunately, successful Colonization (though the latter isn't the series' focus.) For my personal reading I skip part one and enjoy the rest of it (because Mulder running off to Mexico still makes me mad); but that's how I read everything, so it's nothing against this series.
A Heart of Star
""Mulder secures the baby into his bouncer seat on the dining room table, passing him a rubber duck to gnaw on. He then spreads his files out across the table, an assortment of highlighters next to him in a cup. He taps his chin with a pencil.
“Your mother says this is the result of clever editing, but I think we have pretty clear evidence of a ghostly apparition. There’s no sign of the film being altered. I mean, look at this. Mama is out of her mind.” Mulder holds a series of stills up for William to peruse.
“Ma,” yells William, reaching for the paper. “Mamamamamama!”
Mulder scowls. “I can’t believe you’re taking her side.""
Mulder's bonding moments with his growin' boy.
Elysium
""This is so cool,” William breathes, gripping the steering wheel.
Scully smiles, promising herself she will be calm even as she half-wishes he were still in a car seat.
“You wanna say the rosary first?” Mulder pipes up from the back seat. “To Our Blessed Lady of Brake Pads?”
“Daaaaaad,” William says. “I am a licensed driver now. I am a master of my craft.""
Scully's bonding moments with her miracle (and Mulder.)

Chip Off The Old Block 03 - Veracity

""Hey, Charlie. Taste this."
Charles Scully cast a dubious eye on the bubbling mass of ham, beans and spices in the pot on the stove. He reared his head back, away from the spoon being poked toward his face.
"It smells fine, Mulder. Why don't you taste it yourself?"
The spoon followed his retreat at mouth level.
"I never taste while I'm cooking. How do you think I keep my girlish figure?""
Turns out, Will's magic baby powers are all in the family-- and not Mulder's. Charlie is telekinetic, too; and Maggie knew about it the whole time. (Bill is also here, and annoyed.)
Malibusunset's Terra Firma
""William plopped down onto the kitchen tiles in a seated position and stared after Mulder with a frown on his face.  Then he picked up his bottle in one hand, crawled a few feet awkwardly, then sat back down, tilted his head back, and plugged the bottle back in. He sucked voraciously and stared up at Mulder as if to say, "I can't do both, so I'm just gonna hang out here and eat instead."
"Right," said Mulder, bending down to a kneeling position. "How about you concentrate on transporting yourself and the bottle can catch a ride on the tray." William trustingly relinquished the bottle and Mulder placed it on the tray next to the orange juice and continued on. William followed eagerly on all fours. When he got to the stairs that led to the second floor, Mulder stopped and extended his arm down to his son.
"Will, UP," he said, offering his left arm while balancing the tray with his right. William pulled himself up on Mulder's leg, clutching handfuls of his pajama pants. Mulder lifted him like a sack of potatoes and hauled the baby and the tray up the stairs. Cooking breakfast with a baby wasn't for wimps.""
Mulder and Scully patch their lives together as new parents, buying a home, getting engaged, and expecting a second baby. The nuances of parenthood for a driven workaholic Scully and a stay-at-home writer-and-once-out-of-town consultant Mulder weave up and down; and is an entertaining read. (The way I read: Parts 1, 2, the first third of 3-- skipping the plotline-- then Parts 4... onward?) Notable moment: I particularly remember Mulder unable to speak after Scully's pregnancy announcement-- in Part 3-- because I was struck with how strikingly Mulder that is.
dlynn's Scully, NORAD called
""Mulder grabbed one of the pillows beneath his head and swatted Scully. When he reached to get his pillow back, Scully plopped the feathered cushion underneath her arms and glanced between her two men: Mulder, all rumpled and lanky, lying across the faded quilt -- his shirt untucked and sloppy, his jeans stained where Will's hands had wiped worm guts on his father's pants. Mulder's bare feet slid against each other as he rubbed the mosquito bites he'd accumulated last night fishing off the pier with their son. Will, the spitting image of his father, from the way he said, 'Oh, Mom' in the same plaintive voice that Mulder whined 'Sculleee' to the way he spit sunflower seeds with all the finesse of a pro, lay curled on his side, butted up against Mulder's chest. His wet hair stuck up like he'd been hacked with a wild weedwacker. Definitely, a Scully- Mulder.""
A Mulder family moment of bee stings and bedtime stories is interrupted by a call for him to hit the road for necessary Colonization-prevention work. Will knows he'll always be back.
thextruth's Our Next Path
""If someone had told Fox William Mulder that he would marry Dana Katherine Scully and that he would have two children with her. He wouldn’t have believed it, he never saw himself as a normal man, much less as a family man, but that's something that he wouldn’t change for anything in the world, his family is all his happiness, and see Scully give a kiss to that little one who is half her and half him, is always surreal, after all, he is a simple man who loves those little daily moments that fill his whole life.""
This long fic is a series of family fluff-- the type with nothing but cozy family drama, a couple kids, and a twinkling happily-ever-after.
Mulder Left but Scully Joined Him

""From the other side of the connecting door, a complicated sequence of long and short knocks.  T…R…U…S…T…N…O…1…pause.  Mulder.  Or…
Taking a deep breath, Scully raised her fist again, and her knuckles tapped out her own sequence.   O…B…F…U…S…C…A…T…E…pause.  She turned the lock on the door and stepped back.
Holding her gun at the ready, she listened to the muffled sounds as the door on the far side opening slightly… then a little more.  It creaked.  She held her position, not sparing a glance at Will behind her on the bed.
Another breathless moment, and she was watching her knob turn, ever so slowly.""
This epic diverges from canon after William was rescued from his kidnapping. Part 1 focuses on Scully's long, conflicted back-and-forth plans with TLG, Skinner, Doggett, and Reyes before she hits the road to reunite with Mulder. Part 2 is her journey and reunion: Mulder's fierce love and devotion, Will's uncanny abilities saving their hides, and reconnection while constantly being tagged and tailed by the Conspiracy. Part 3 kicks it up a notch: Scully insists they address Mulder's abduction PTSD and rescue other Super Soldier victims, barely escaping the Alien Bounty Hunter, and stumbling into Gibson's coalition in the woods with an alien faction. (This author writes spectacular and well-thought out logical connections that weave the misshapen mytharc back together.)
Revely's Unfinished Universe (Goss)
""They have a private evening ritual - nose to nose on the bed they practice telepathic communication.
Scully disappears into the motel bathroom for their soft-shelled display of male bonding, shutting the door behind her with aggravating finality - boys' side, girl's side. Mulder immediately stops casting out brain waves and begins to wonder what she's doing in there. She's awfully quiet. The baby just dozes and tries to nurse Mulder's nose until he manages to work one of his fists into his mouth.""
Does this count? Mulder is returned after Will is born; and Scully drives her son out to him. The three reconnect in gentle fits-and-starts on the long journey back. (LOVE this-- one of the first fics I'd ever read; and still a favorite.)
Gillian Leigh's (MC) Visitor in the Desert (MC)
""You have no other proof?" he asked, seemingly disappointed.
"No," she said, quietly.
"I'm supposed to take the word of a total stranger as the Gospel Truth?" he asked, almost mockingly. "I'm sorry, Rhiannon. But in my line of work, I've learned not to trust people." Rhiannon's eyes filled with tears again, and she looked down at her hands before speaking again.
"If you don't stop Scully from giving William up from adoption, I am an example of what will become of every human being on this planet," she said, calmly. "I may look like a human being on the exterior, but I am thirty- three and one-third percent alien.""
Mulder gets a vision while hiding out in the desert-- a girl from the future warns him against Scully adopting out William. He rushes back, reclaims his family, and drags them all (and friends) to an underground bunker civilization preparing for Colonization-- where he finds not only Scully's brothers, but also Samantha. The girl in his vision keeps appearing to him, and is eventually revealed to his daughter.
Honorable Mentions
@we-mad-guys’s forgetting the future
Skinner, TLG, and the Scullys take turns caring for Will when his parents are forced to work out of town secretly on anti-Colonization measures. (Love this fic; but I already included it in my Dad!Mulder sports fics.)
WordsSpillFromMyOpenVeins_89’s Weekend At Martha’s Vineyard
A vacation at the Vineyard for Mulder, Scully, their son, and his dog (which leads up to a proposal.)
Beduini/beduini's Hurricane Season
Not a favorite, but it fits the bill. Featuring unresolved tensions and PTSD crackling between new parents Mulder and Scully and among the Scully family at large, this fic explodes with mess and tensions every chapter or so, forcing everyone to get along in the midst of a sudden hurricane.

30-Fic Rec Challenge
I did this last year.
Here’s my list for 30 recommended X-Files fanfic. I’ll try to not repeat on the authors.
and they are, of course, all MSR.
1. Currently reading: Genius by Kipler. Summary: The story of a young girl who disappears and returns smarter than she was before.
2. A short fic you like: the truth or a Pomeranian by seek_its_opposite (@seek-its-opposite) Summary: It occurs to them both too late that nice suburban couples don’t have dogs named after Melville characters.
3. A novel-length fic you like: Puppets by Madeleine Partous Summary: None provided by the author.
4. An AU fic that you like: By the Dim and Flaring Lamps by sunflowerseedsandscience  ( @sunflowerseedsandscience) Summary: Captain Fox Mulder, the abolitionist son of a Virginia plantation owner and slaveholder, has turned his back on his family and everything he's ever known in order to fight for the Union, rather than joining the ranks of the Confederacy alongside his fellow Virginians. He runs off to Pennsylvania to join a newly-formed regiment in the spring of 1863, and there, he meets and quickly befriends the enigmatic young Daniel Scully, a private under his command. Private Scully's steady shooting and bravery in battle have proven him to be a far more capable soldier than his age would suggest. But in the days immediately following Gettysburg, Mulder discovers that Private Scully is hiding a secret, one that could change their friendship- and Mulder's entire life- in ways he couldn't possibly imagine.
5. A fic you like that has a person’s name in the title: The Divine Professor M. by Flynn Summary: "They exist as separate individuals .... but they aren't truly complete until they're together."
6. A fic that made you feel nostalgic: Energy and Light by Oracle Summary: our girls have vanished, each one on a different night. Each one by the light of a full moon. Is it just a coincidence?
7. A fic that made you cried: 7 Days in May by prufrock's love Summary: It might be the end of the world. Kersh on a seemingly innocuous case in Nebraska, Mulder and Scully reflect on their relationship and its progress. Slots into the US6 timeline post-Tithonus, and assumes a general level of knowledge of all preceding action and, unlike what we saw onscreen, there is sufficient time for Scully to have healed between cases.

28. A fic that you wish was longer, or hope for sequels: Knock by Gnatalie Summary: "They were a perfect match, since neither of them was getting what they really wanted."
29. The last fic you finished: The Great Outdoors by agoodwoman Summary:Picking up a few weeks after Planes Trains and Automobiles left off, Mulder and Scully have met the luckiest man alive and faced off with Pfaster again. This story begins after Mulder and Scully decide to pack a bag and get out of her apartment. Except they don't spend another weekend in bed together - they deal with the demons from Pfaster and the wake of his turmoil in their lives. They also, of course, get sent on another assignment to The Great Outdoors.
30. A fic you want to recommend just because: The Fox Mulder Phonetic Alphabet by storybycorey (@storybycorey) Summary:The ABC’s, as told by Fox Mulder.
**Bonus: Light Don't Sleep by wonderland (@amplifyme) Summary: " ... I don't want this to end. I want to stay like this forever. Just the three of us, right here in this bed. Not a care in the world." REASON: I have a feeling not many people have read this. But it’s so cute.

hello!! do you happen to know of a cute one-shot a long time ago wherein sherlolly have two kids (boyandgirl) and theyre investigating if their parents are divorced because they don’t sleep on the same bed. I think it was a series and the oneshot was the epilogue. I cant find it anymore 😭 I would greatly appreciate it if you can help me 💟
Hi, Mychakk here,
It's Sustain Series by MaybeAmanda and like you said the scene is the epilogue of the last part.
Happy reading!

Old School X is a project interviewing X-Files fanfic authors who were posting fic during the original run of the show. New interviews are posted every Tuesday.
Interview with MaybeAmanda
MaybeAmanda has been a longtime participant in X-files fandom. She has 29 stories at Gossamer, the earliest being archived there in 1998 and the latest in 2012. I've recced some of my favorites of her stories here before, including "Malus Genus" and "Snow in Alabama." Big thanks to MaybeAmanda for doing this interview.
Does it surprise you that people are still interested in reading your X-Files fanfics and others that were posted during the original run of the show (1993-2002)?
It does, in a way.  The feedback I get nowadays is either of the "I read this like 20 years ago and I just read it again" variety or the "I was too young back in the day but I have been watching the show in reruns/on XYZ streaming service/on the full-series of DVDs I got for $3 from the thrift store and I was THRILLED to discover fanfiction was being written even in the Dark Ages!" So it's a bit of a surprise, but it's a pleasant one. I answer every mail/comment because my mama raised me right!
What do you think of when you think about your X-Files fandom experience? What did you take away from it?
It was great. It was fun. It was educational. It was a godsend. Even with the occasional bouts of back-stabbing and flame-throwing, it was mainly a welcoming, inclusive place to be. I made so many online friends who have turned into meat-friends (do they still call them that? Probably not).  During the first run of the show I had small children and we had relocated for my husband's job.  I had very little social life, but the fandom gave me a chance to meet and connect with people who liked what I liked. Then I discovered online fanfic, and it was even better!
Social media didn't really exist during the show's original run. How were you most involved with the X-Files online (atxc, message board, email mailing list, etc.)?
ATXC I think.  A lot of email lists - 5 or 6 or 7 or so over the years. Gossamer, of course, Ephemeral when that came into being.  Haven discussion boards. My own websites.
What did you take away from your experience with X-Files fic or with the fandom in general?
More than anything?  I am a fangirl.
What was it that got you hooked on the X-Files as a show?
I have always been partial to sci-fi and speculative fiction, but it rarely makes it to the screen - large or small - without being trite, clichéd, or just plain bad. It's easy to forget that The X-Files was groundbreaking - smart, scary, funny, insightful, intriguing, complex plots, on-going mythology. It looked great. It sounded great. David Duchovny was pleasant to look at, too, and damn! Gillian Anderson is/was one hell of an actress.
What got you involved with X-Files fanfic?
I found XF fanfic - somehow - probably by accident, or by way of a recommendation - and it blew my mind.  I had written fanfic (of a sort) with my friends in highschool, so I was familiar with the beast, but to find what amounted to excellent story after excellent story for free within (relatively) easy reach (because dial-up, right?) written by people who, for the most part, were thrilled you read their story and were happy to talk to you about it, about writing in general, about your shared obsession - that was amazing. As I am sitting here typing this I am feeling that thrill again - discovering Karen Rasch, Madeliene Partous, Paula Graves [Lilydale note: AKA Anne Haynes], Sheryl Martin and all the other early BNFs was, well, the only word is exciting. I felt like I was a member of a secret society and that I was sitting at the popular kids lunch table, all at once. (Don't forget, in the early days, shippers were considered delusional outliers - seriously!)
What is your relationship like now to X-Files fandom?
Good?   It's not as lively a place as it once was, but I haven't renounced my citizenship or anything. If I get a rec, I check it out. I know there are those who like to pretend they never had anything to do with the fandom, but why? I am still a proud XPhile.
Were you involved with any fandoms after the X-Files? If so, what was it like compared to X-Files?
Angel (a teeny tiny bit) while XF was still running, but those fans were - I don't know the word.  Hardcore does not begin to do it justice. I wrote two short pieces at a friend's request then backed away slowly. Sherlock (a bit) - it is/was very LJ centred and that made it hard to find things. A lot of it moved to tumblr which made it harder, then to twitter, which - no.  I was involved in one of the less fashionable facets of the Sherlock fandom, so I was really a fringe-dweller there, too. It seemed clique-ier than XF, and they all seemed so young, and they all knew EVERYTHING about everything, and every damned thing was political, and, and, and... GET OFF MY LAWN!
But maybe I am remembering the XF fandom wrong. ;)
Who are some of your favorite fictional characters? Why?
Like, all fiction? Mulder and Scully for sure. Arthur Dent. Sherlock Holmes in most of his incarnations. Spock. Winnie the Pooh. Why do I like them?  They speak to me, I guess.
Do you ever still watch The X-Files or think about Mulder and Scully?
I haven't watched an episode in probably two years (back when it was on regular tv).  Yeah, I think about them surprisingly often.  Story ideas, weirdly.
Do you ever still read X-Files fic?
I finished re-reading The Iolokus Series a couple of weeks back, so yes.  It's excellent comfort reading.
Do you have any favorite X-Files fanfic stories or authors?
Lots! But as far as authors go, I hate playing favourites. I will miss someone I shouldn't and feel like crap.  The Iolokus Series by MustangSally and Rivka T. is probably my all-time favourite fic because it's so very well-written, and so very fucked-up. Kipler's Strangers and the Strange Dead is also terrifically well-written and clever. For complex, interesting case files, you can’t beat syntax6 - pick any of them.
What is your favorite of your own fics, X-Files and/or otherwise?
Oh geez. Seriously? I wrote a lot of collaborations and I love them - and my co-authors - all!  Stuff I wrote on my own: Anniversary Waltz (first XF fic I wrote so it's sentimental.) Or Blue Patches. Or Epiphany. Or The Gifts of the Magi (On a Kaiser Roll). Or 221XF.  Gonna stop now.
Do you think you'll ever write another X-Files story?
Every time I thought I wouldn't, I did. I would never say never.
Or dust off and post an oldie that for whatever reason never made it online?
Nothing finished ever went un-posted. All the unfinished stuff remains unfinished.
Do you still write fic now?
Haven't for a while, but it's not as if I have said "I SHALL NEVER WRITE FANFIC AGAIN!" I just have nothing in the works at this moment.
Where do you get ideas for stories?
With fic, it's usually from canon - some question unanswered, some road unexplored, some "what if?" that needs iffing.  With "original" fiction, damned if I know.  A snippet of overheard conversation, an interesting photo, something a random story generator spit out at me.  Sometimes things just click.
What's the story behind your pen name?
Okay so...many years ago I was on a (smallish) fic list with a friend.  There was a challenge posted - a bad fic challenge. We knew we could write some truly bad fic if we really tried.  One of the rules of the challenge was to post under an assumed name so no one would know who they were voting for. Well, my friend and I wrote something truly, painfully horrid and we were very proud of its ghastliness, so were brainstorming possible pseudonyms. She hated everything but had no real suggestions of her own.  I knew that she was a bit of a Trekkie (like me) and I said - What about Amanda Greyson and Joanna McCoy?  And she said  - What?? Huh?? Why?? And I said - Spock's mother and McCoy's daughter and she replied, "Maybe Amanda is Spock's mother but on Star Trek there is not a Joanna." By this point, I was SO DONE, and I became MaybeAmanda and she became NotJoanna. Really.
Do your friends and family know about your fic and, if so, what have been their reactions?
It took years for me to admit it, but yeah, they know.  They didn't entirely get it.  The reactions I most often got were:
"Ew! You write stuff without being forced?? Ew!!"
or:
"Is it smut? I bet it's just smut. You write smut, don't you? Pure filth, right? I can't believe you are wasting your time writing pornography! That's disgusting! You sicken me! Um, can I read some of it?"
And of course:
"If you are going to write anyway, why don't you get published and become fabulously wealthy?"
which is really two questions, neither of which is easily answerable.
Anyone who tracked my work down (because I told them I wrote, but not my pseudonym) usually said something like, "Hey! You're an okay/passable/decent writer! Why don't you get published and become fabulously wealthy?"
Yeah.
Is there a place online (tumblr, twitter, AO3, etc.) where people can find you and/or your stories now?
Same old email (maybe_a@rocketmail_dot_com). Gossamer, my site, my LJ and probably some other places.  I can't lie - it's a bit scattered.

Post-Episode/Missing Scene Thursday
Oh, Three Words.  If any episode needed to be fleshed out and added to, because several scenes were missing, it’s that one.  So today’s rec is a brief but sexy and extremely emotional missing scene.  It’s a Mulder POV, so it gives us some really great insight into exactly what was going through his head.
Oh, and that whole scene where Mulder and Scully have that awkward exchange in his apartment when Scully first brings him home?  Yeah...that ends a bit differently in today’s rec.  And much more to our liking.
Title:  Atlas
Author:  maybeamanda
Rating:  PG-13
Length: 6K  / Wordcount: 2000+
Synopsis:   I am Atlas, he thought.
Spoilers:  Through Three Words
Possible Triggers:  None

What are some of your favorite fics?
I have a TON. I just finished re-reading the Sustain series by maybeamanda; anything by @petratodd is good; @gettingovergreta‘s anglerfish fic is the best weird M rated thing you’ll ever read; That Dear Perfection by @soyeahso will always be one of my faves; anything by @sherlolly/nocturnias (especially Through a Fairytale, Darkly); I love the fluffy goodness of @simplyshelbs16xoxo and the fun fics by @stlgeekgirl and @lilsherlockian1975 and so many, many others!
In fact, if you go to mizjoely’s favorites on the sherlollilist home page you’ll find the stories and authors mentioned above, and dozens of others. Happy reading!

What are your must read xf fic? Ones that you’ve read over and over
What a fun question! There are so many really excellent fics out there, including hundreds since I stopped writing. The ones I’ve read over and over tend to be the dated ones by now, those that came out when I was heavily into the fandom. Here are just a few of them, in no particular order:
All the Mulders, by Alloway
I find this short story both hilarious and haunting. Scully embraces her power in the upsidedown post-apocalyptic world.
Strangers and the Strange Dead, by Kipler
Taut prose and an intriguing 3rd party POV make this story a winner, and that’s before the kicker of an ending.
Cell Phone, by Marasmus
Talk about your killer twists!
Arizona Highways, by Fialka
I think this is one of the best-crafted stories to come out of the XF. It’s majestic in scope, full of complex literary structure and theme, and yet the plot moves like a runaway freight train. Both the Mulder and Scully characterizations are handled with tender care.
So, We Kissed, by Alelou
What I love about this one is how it grounds Mulder and Scully in the ordinary. Mulder’s terrible secret doesn’t involve a UFO or some CSM-conspiracy. Scully goes to therapy that actually looks like therapy. I guess what I’m saying is that I utterly believe this version of M & S in addition to just enjoying reading about them.
Sore Luck at the Luxor, by Anubis
Hot, funny, atmospheric. What’s not to love?
Black Hole Season, by Penumbra
Nobody does wordsmithing like Penumbra. I use her in arguments with professional writers when they try to tell me that adverbs and adjectives MUST GO. Just gorgeous, sly, insightful prose.
The Dreaming Sea, by Revely
This one reads like a fairytale in all the best ways. Revely creates such loving, beautiful worlds for M & S to live in, and I wish they could stay there always.
Malus Genius, by Plausible Deniability and MaybeAmanda
Funny and fun, with great original characters, a sly casefile and some clear-eyed musings on the perils of getting older. This one resonates more and more the older I get. ;)
Riding the Whirlpool, by Pufferdeux
I look this one up periodically to prove to people that it exists. Scully gets off on a washing machine while Mulder helps. Yet it’s in character? And kinda works? This one has to be read to be believed.
Bone of Contention, by Michelle Kiefer and Kel
People used to tell me all the time that casefiles are super easy to write while the poetic vignette is hard. Well, I can’t say which is harder but there much fewer well-done casefiles in the fandom than there are poetic vignettes. This is one of the great ones.
Antidote, by Rachel Howard
A fic that manages to be both hot and cold as it imagines Mulder and Scully trying to stay alive in the frosty wilderness while a deadly virus is on the loose. This is an ooooold fic that holds up impressively well given everything that followed it!
Falling Down in Four Acts, by Anubis
Anubis was actually a bunch of different writers sharing a single author name. This particular one paints an angry, vivid world for Our Heroes and their compatriots. There is no happy ending here, but I read this once and it stayed with me forever.
The Opposite of Impulse, by Maria Nicole
A sweet slice of life on a sunny day. When I imagine a gentler universe for Mulder and Scully, this is the kind of place I’d put them.
Dude, I have about a zillion more but I need to put on clothes and be an adult for a while...

Hey lady! What's that fic where Mulder is away on assignment and he and Scully start emailing and it turns romantic and then sexy and then he returns and they make out in the airport and then go home together?
Are you perhaps thinking of Renovatio by MaybeAmanda and Lisby?

Sherlolly Fanfiction Week - Day 1
Hi,
I’ve decided to rec a couple of stories (and three authors) per day to celebrate the Sherlolly Fanfiction Week. I hope you’ll enjoy those recs, too. Here it goes, I try to give you some reasons for why I love those stories:
A story not necessarily well known:
Lessons in Love by 16magnolias - this is one of my top fav stories post s3. It’s a slow burn Sherlolly with Sherlock getting to learn what it means to love and to love Molly especially. There are some OOC, but they help instead of take over the story (although at first you may get such an impression, they do fade after the first couple of chapters). Also, this is a case fic and the climax of the story is amazing. You’ll feel for Sherlock for sure. Go shoo read!
Blind Ambition by OpalSkyLoveDivine - this one falls into the category of sick!lock. A beautiful slow burn Sherlolly, with lots of Sherlolly friendship, a jealous!lock mix, and of course a heartwarming ending. This is also a  couple of cases fic, but they are more background, as the Sherlolly relationship is the main focus.
Molly's Garden by HeayPuckett - Here we have Sherlock dealing with Molly’s getting seriously hurt. He’s inept at dealing with it and struggles with the situation. The ending is very satisfying. May bring tears to your eyes, be warned.
A story that I love but for not exactly the reason you may think:
Sustain or Concerto for the Famished in D Minor by MaybeAmanda - I think everyone knows this one. It’s one of the best Sherlolly stories ever and to think it was written already post s1 and still can be seen as canon/close to canon portrayal. Amazing. BUT! The reason I’m reccing it here is because one of my top fav things about this story is... Sherlock’s relationship with his family. The way they treat him and how it’s in the end vindicated in a way... It’s one of my top fav things there. Please give it a go if you hadn’t yet, all three parts plus coda!
A story well known to be reread:
The Resident Attachment and Those Left Behind by Maejones (@mae-jones) - seriously, two of the best stories, and I hope you have read them! ;) I have a confession to make about The Resident Attachment - when I first saw the summary I dismissed it as something completely not my area (despite it being a Historical!lock, which I adore). I saw it being updated regularly and finally decided to give it a go - the best decision I ever made! Read like four times already. Slow burn Sherlolly, with a case and drama and action, and some good ole angst, and of course the smut. Oh, the sumtty smut. mae-jones just rocks at smut. Go shoo read! Those Left Behind has been my top fav story about a secret Third Holmes child, period, and still is. It’s an amazing read especially after s4. Plus Sherlock is an idiot. But he kinds of means well. But he screws up anyway. Thankfully Molly loves him. Please read this, it’s freaking awesome.
A long one shot that might have been skipped:
Dear Sherlock, by MudbloodPride - Sherlolly interaction through Molly’s eyes written in letters. WITH A TWIST! What would Molly do when she learns Sherlock is being sent to Easten Europe and she may lose him for real this time? Read and find out. Wrenches my heart then makes me tingle at the end. Wonderful long-shot.
A shortie to be read:
The Arrangement by jankmusic - a believable modern marriage arrangement? Sure! Here it is. A sweet story with a little bit of drama at the beginning and fluffy ending.
Whiskey and Words by Emmyjean - have you ever wondered if Sherlock had been ever struck by love at a first sight? John did and so he asked. And boy did his friend made a revelation. Molly doesn’t even make an appearance and yet... Perfect story, one I could definitely see happening in canon behind the scenes we were shown.
An Author of old worth being dusted
Elixir.BB - an author who has written a lot of wonderful angsty stories post s2. and some amazing ones post 3. The stories will gut you and then bring smile and tingling feelings of hope. Lots of feels here. But so worth it, believe me!
An Author less known but worth checking out:
Ridiculosity - This author have a bunch of lovely, well written stories: a series with a Matchmaker Mary, a Vicotrian!lock Maid Trope, a soulmate one, and some other interesting one-shots. I like her style and way with words. Please check out her stories and leave a review. :)
An Author you know, but I’m going to rec anyway 😉
@mrsmcrieff also on ff.net: MrsMCrieff - if you are looking for an author specializing in slow burn Sherlolly, here she is! :D She’s also amazing with case fics. I love all of her stories, with lots of tension, some drama and action, plus the smut ;) Lots of wonderful reading here. I also really appreciate the regular updates, usually Sundays and Wednesdays :)
Here it is for tonight. I’ll see you all next day with another bunch of recs. Please let me know if the links don’t work. Happy reading, Everyone! ;)

X-Files Collector's Edition: MOTW but Rinse and Repeat
MOTWs were among the best of The X-Files episodes... but what if those monsters had follow up episodes?
Honorable mention: @paperheartsarts/Paper_hearts_and_homemade_arts's series If You Will Let Me (which is still on-going) which follows Padgett's demon pursuing Scully even after death. Horrifying hallucinations and real, physical danger nearly claim her and Mulder's lives.
Loose chronological order below~
Pattie's It and Them
""Mulder, you're not going to believe this... "
"I believe in all kinds of things, Scully." He looked at his watch. "Isn't it past your bed time?"
"Jane Doe appears to have become John Doe." She kept her eyes on the infant and waited for her partner's reply. "Remember the Amish outside of Steveston?"
"What?" Mulder sat up. Now HE was fully awake.""
Mulder and Scully do their best to aid an ex-Kindred cult member's baby that she leaves on Scully's doorstep.
Offspring
""The doctor ushered Mulder and Scully into a small office where he had a desk. "I know. You must think this is just something in the lake water, or regular hepatitis. But this kid puked up what looks to be a flatworm."
"A fluke." Mulder nodded to Scully.
"Yes, a fluke. Last month, we removed one from a woman's liver, and it wasn't a typical fluke. We embalmed it until we could find someone to identify it. Then, when Kevin Johnson was brought here yesterday, we had our second fluke. It's in an aquarium in the same lab. as the one we embalmed.""
S4: Flukeman-infested lake.
Genetic Appetite
""Scully was adamant. "We are staying." She knew she wasn't going to have a good night's sleep when Mulder started thinking aloud in the lobby of the apartment building.
"You don't suppose he... "
Scully's patience was wearing thin. "What? Don't suppose he what?"
"Mated. Well, it's not that impossible to believe, Scully. All beings have the urge to procreate. Maybe he could get through a date without eating.""
Liver extractions and bodies are piling up... but Tooms is dead. Mulder and Scully track down an unexpected source.
EllieL/Ellie's Rendering Judgment of Chthonic Gods
""Atropos has cut the line. You saw it happen. Whatever you may see that she has to do in the future, the decision was made that she shall not continue. It cannot be undone, not by my will nor my husband's."
"You could give her a choice. She's coming here unguided, and has dipped her hand in the river and tasted it. That must change matters."
"That--that does change matters, somewhat. She was a good woman in life, and I am not unsympathetic to her or what you see of her future. And she still has a choice where to drink. Let her make that choice, and perhaps she'll make the decision for us.""
Scully's nurse in One Breath bargained indirectly with her son-in-law, Death, for her patient's life. Invisible deals are struck, allowing Scully both to live and to see her father one last time.
JET/Jesemie's Evil Twin/eviljesemie's Things That Lie Outside
""He must have been the one to apologize but has no idea what he really said. After the family leaves, he realizes her presence behind him. Turning, he catches an expression on her face so protective of him he almost steps back. She straightens up, goes to grab their files off the internal audit conference table.
It might not have been there at all, that look. Probably not. Almost 100% guaranteed it was not.
He misses his sister at this moment, he realizes, because in every alternate world he's imagined, every place Samantha is alive and well and his sister, she has grown up to be the kind of person he would tell about that look, and he might let something into his voice that she would suspect, and it would be a secret between them.""
Post Paper Hearts Scully finds the last girl, setting her partner free from this last horrific hold.
Justin Glasser's (xphilefic) Kevin
""Miss Scully, this is Nathan, Kevin's brother. I talked to you today and--Miss Scully, I don't know if this is, like, your jurisdiction or what, but if there's anything you can do--he's gone, and we can't--I don't think we can find him. He said he was afraid of the moloch and I didn't believe him . . . Miss Scully, please." Click. The machine whirred in rewind, and shut off, light glowing placidly.
"You don't know what that is?" she asked.
Mulder shrugged. "Can't know everything, I guess.""
S5? Scully is called two years later when Kevin Kryder goes missing. While she and Mulder locate Kevin, his new brother is taken as well... and killed.
msk's (Ao3), bcfan’s, maybe_amanda/MaybeAmanda's (Site, LiveJournal), Tesla's (XLibris), Amy's, Kmom's, Lucy Marchmont's
Jabberwocky
""Sybil, have you go got a crucifix, a cross, an article or symbol of your faith on or about your person? Necklace, earrings, scapular, sacred vestments of any sort? Bottle of holy water, maybe?..."
Sybil shook her head. "I have another pair of duck earrings in my purse. How's that?"
"Probably not enough."
"Mulder," Scully said, her voice sounding harsh even to her own ears, "I'm giving you three seconds to start making some sense. One, two-"
"The glyphs," he said. "It's like a welcome mat. Only instead of saying *Welcome,* or *The Addams Family,* this is more like, *Vlad lives here. Trespassers will be eaten*.""
S6 (or S7) Mulder takes Scully back to Texas for another undead case, courtesy of Frohike. Between her jealousy of a flirty, bubbly redhead, pique at Mulder's constant Sheriff Hartwell teasing, enjoyment at an incredibly fancy hotel her partner booked specifically for her, and fear of said flirty redhead's two horrific insurance brother-bosses, Scully is torn between annoyance and affection. She is, however, able to pull it together just in time for the crazy finale involving her partner, a vampire feast auction, and a law enforcement bust led by the vampire Sheriff himself.
Maria Nicole’s
Stand by the Window
""Once they had tracked him down, only his threatened cascade of disclosure kept them at a distance, growling and snapping.
A few years ago he might have fought them, might have tried to disappear for good, or else oust Strughold. Now he was simply tired of it all.
And so he was finally forced to live the life he had pretended to have all along.""
The Well-Manicured Man survived FTF's car bomb, fending off his compatriots with threats of exposure. Plunging himself into caged retirement, he awaits the inevitable, befriending his spy-housekeeper leading up to the events of One Son.
Bridge
""So what do you want to call them? Little bug-boys?"
"Bug-ees. Buggers. The deadened. The ungrateful dead. Deadheads. Hey, yeah...deadheads."
She looked like she was struggling to suppress the smile, but it came out anyway. "All right, so we have the disappearance of these deadheads from the previous case. We have two people dead now, with some sort of puncture wound in the back of their neck. Have you considered that you were hallucinating?"
"I thought you just said you believed--" She shook her head. "That Pincus injected those people, without a doubt. But what if...you've been assuming that he's a large insect-like creature who can trick others into believing he's human. What if it's the other way around? What if he's a human who can trick others into believing he's a monster?""
Field Trip Mulder and Scully ditch their quarantine early, experiencing unexpectedly peaceful and soul-searching mind-melds while investigating a case very like Folie a Deux. The depths of Scully's plumbed from the depths of an ocean, Pincus and snake venom, and rescuing Mulder from himself-- this is a gorgeous read: more exploratorily honest than neck-stiffeningly intense.
Wylfcynne's Imagine
""He headed for the door, then hesitantly turned. "Agent Scully?"
She turned, surprised by his tone. "Yes?"
"You want to know why the X Files and the two of you have been shut down so hard?"
She stared at him. "We know why."
"Because you terrify them, Scully, with your courage, your integrity and your uncompromising principles. You terrify me and I'm on your side. Imagine how they feel.""
Post S.R. 819 Mulder and Scully are captured by a cult. He's infected with the black oil while Scully frees herself enough to call in Skinner and the cavalry. She then must save her partner, ruthlessly torturing the alien virus in his body to death. Everyone else stands in awe.
Joann Humby's The Pattern
""She kept her voice professionally mild even when she finally changed the subject. "Skinner said that Diana Fowley worked for Patterson."
He let his hand rest on her shoulder, admiring her courage. "I effectively introduced them. He liked her." He ignored the way that Scully flinched, and was grateful that she bit down her instinctive response to his remark. Talking was hard.... "After the Props case, he helped her to get funding for her research. In San Francisco," he added, not quite disguising the amusement in his voice. If Scully could be courageous then so could he. "About as far away from me as he could manage."
"But you still left the ISU?"
"Reggie was willing to take me off Patterson's hands. He wasn't in a position to say no."
"And you and Diana?"
"It suited us. A couple of thousand miles apart.""
Post Amor Fati Mulder's history with Monty Propps becomes relevant again. He slowly unravels the current mystery whilst reflecting on his past with Diana and his possible future with Scully, IVF, and angels. (There are even sections from Diana's POV during her early relationship which delves into her assignment to California and her recruitment parallel to Mulder's discovery of the X-Files.)
aka Jake/ aka_Jake ’s (Gossamer) Reprise
""She turned to face him, laundry abandoned. “I don’t have to tell you, we saw Eugene Tooms chopped into a million pieces by an escalator.”
“I noticed that.”
“City Square thoroughly cleaned the area before the shopping mall reopened. They sent us their bill.”
“Maybe they missed a spot.”
“And what, Tooms grew a new body from a finger or a pinky toe?”
Mulder tapped the end of his nose.
“No.” She shook her head. “It’s impossible.""
Post S11 Mulder and Scully battle another Eugene Tooms-like case... in fact, it is Tooms, who just won't die.
Gefangener (txt)
""Opponents of the death penalty often cite that capital punishment is not a deterrent to murder, those executed are usually poor, and many innocent people have been wrongly sentenced to death.
Tell it to someone who cares.
...Special Agent Fox Mulder has not seen Gerry Schnauz since testifying at his trial. He isn't sympathetic to the fact that Schnauz is a diagnosed paranoid schizophrenic, who, according to his court-appointed lawyer, belongs in Melvoin Psychiatric Hospital, not a maximum security prison.
Fox Mulder wishes Gerry Schnauz had committed his crimes in one of the forty states that gas, electrocute or inject its serial killers.""
AU-- Post Unruhe Mulder darkly reflects on Schnauz not getting the death penalty while Scully lies forever in bed, her mind ruined.
@admiralty-xfd/admiralty's Novam Domum
""Seventeen year old Daisy Peacock stepped on the gas but wasn’t certain where she was headed. The radio blasted Del Shannon and she rolled her window down. The smell inside the car was awful.
...Edmund Peacock sat stoic in the front seat, staring straight ahead, not saying anything. He never said anything. And her mother laid in back, blood slick down her thighs, screaming not out of pain but of rage. The noise was akin to the whinnying of a horse, or cattle being zapped. All she wanted was to make the sound stop the way Father would when the babies came out all wrong.
Waiting was her only option. Mother wasn’t long for this world, anyway.""
Post S11 Mulder and Scully were settling into their new lives as expecting parents when another family from their blast blows in, searching for their own place to call Home.
AUs
Adam Webb's Pyre
""As the casket stopped in front of him while loading documentation was double checked. Mulder saw L'Ively holding up his palm, displaying that it was empty in the manner of a theatrical magician. The next instant a tiny fluttering orange fire blossomed from his extended index finger. In the space of a second its intensity quadrupled, flaring into a pencil-thin lance of white hot flame. Coming from the casket a high-pitched beeping sound filled the air, indicating that the rise in temperature had been registered by in-built sensors. L'Ively appeared unconcerned, either with the fact that his pyrokinetic display had tripped the alarm or that his skin was being consumed. Mulder had a fleeting vision of the wiry little Englishman's body repairing itself and staggering out of the burning wreckage of a downed aircraft. It was a fact stranger than fiction that Lively had already survived three deaths. But all of those had been death by fire, Mulder reminded himself, falling from a great height would prove as fatal to L'Ively as it would to anyone else. Grinning like a hob-goblin L'Ively used the residue of his own melting flesh to draw a large greasy brown heart shape onto the glass, and through it blew a kiss to Scully. Then folding his blackened finger into his palm he abruptly banished the fire.""
Post Paper Clip Cecil L'Ively cut a deal with the government-- because, of course-- and puts Scully in a coma. Mulder and Phoebe team up to take him down, healing a few old wounds and earning a bit of redemption.
Thalia D'Muse's Nowhere to Hide
""The cabin is set back in the woods, two miles from the nearest dwelling. It is perfect. Your screams will be for my ears only. A sweet symphony with me as the sole audience. I shudder in anticipation as I remember your voice: a deep, sensuous alto, caressing my ears like a sultry torch song. I want to hear that voice again so badly. I want to hear that silky-smooth voice speak my name. I want to hear it scream, cry, beg for mercy. These are the sounds that will be music to my ears.
Sleep now, my Dana. We will be there soon.""
Alternating between the madness of Pfaster and the desperation of Mulder, this post Irresistible fic toys with an AU: if Donnie Pfaster were able to break free and recapture his last victim.
@slippinmickeys/Slippin' Mickeys's (Ao3) Unnamed (Ao3)
""Mulder felt like he’d been punched in the solar plexus.
“He killed her,” he said, deflating.
He’d been expecting a ‘we don’t know that yet’ or a ‘without a body, there’s still hope, Mulder.’ Instead, she said: “And you killed him.” Something in the way she held her shoulders made him think she wasn’t sorry for it.""
Post Paper Hearts Mulder finds a photograph of Samantha that matches the last cloth heart; but his extreme sorrow is immediately channeled into determination to save Scully from her cancer.
Erin M. Blair’s (Ao3) A Little Twist of Three
""Hold that thought," Scully replied, as carefully put down little Dana, and she opened the door. It was Kristen Kilar, one of Melissa's New Age friends.""
S1 deviated with Mulder and Scully becoming parents and a family. When S2 Duane Barry rolls around, it's Melissa Scully who is taken instead. Kristen Kilar is one of Missy's friends.
Kim Berglund's Blood Dimmed Tide
""Morbidly he reached in and slid out the state trooper's photo that had tormented him for many sleepless nights. Scully gagged and tied, her eyes wide with fear.
He dropped it back into the folder and closed his eyes.
It had been his darkest night. Until now.
He thought he could hear the beating of wings. La gargouille waiting impatiently for death.
Opening his eyes, Mulder let go of the file and reached for the one behind it.
Kristen Kilar, The Trinity Killers.""
Post Grotesque Scully is withdrawing from Mulder, thinking she's failed to help her partner-- giving up. Kristen arrives, creating more friction; and Mulder, sick of it all, pulls out his gun.
bellefleur/bellefleur1013's Triple Returns
""Kristen herself had not actually committed the murders the first time, but she had led her unholy trinity to each of the victims, and she alone as an observer knew the intimate details of each victim and crime scene. The identical nature of the crimes could only mean one thing--Kristen was reconstructing the path that had first brought them together. By duplicating the case that Mulder had solved, she was sure to attract his attention and draw him into it again.""
It's S7: Kristen Kilar is back; and Scully has to pry open Mulder about his past with her and save him from being turned into a vampire.
J. C. Sun's Leave
""Cold, very cold, yet lovely, this woman.
This coldness, this is what he lacks.
This coldness, it makes him better.
"Very pretty. You have good taste."
He starts.
He casts a nervous glance towards his gun. I laugh, and he relaxes.
"You are happy?" I say.
His mouth twitches, and I read that he is happy, as happy as he can ever be.""
Vampire Kristen lived, running across Mulder's path years later. She sees Scully, his peace, and-- finally-- her own reflection.
Thanks for reading~
Enjoy!

Over on the Sherlolly discord, @darnedchild asked about recs for fics that would be representative of how Molly was written prior to S3, so I picked a few that seemed representative to me of how we as a fandom wrote/perceived her at that point in time.
This was a fun trip down memory lane and reminded how much the character and our perception of her has changed over the years. (For instance: It was once considered laughable to write a BAMF!Molly fic, and not just by members of the Alphabet Crew for The Ship That Shall Not Be Named.)
It’s also interesting to see how our perception of Sherlock has changed and evolved as well, from the High Functioning Sociopath to Becoming Human to Emotionally Damaged By Childhood Trauma But Recovering - in short, from a Great Man to a Good Man.
This is by no means an exhaustive list, just a cherry picked handful of stories to use as examples (and mostly M rated, sorry!). If anyone has their own faves to add, please chime in!
Abandoned by mizjoely (I would write this soooo differently now!)
The Full House by emcee aka @strawberrypatty
Friends Like These and A hundred visions and revisions by @elixirbb
Sustain or Concerto for the Famished in D Minor by MaybeAmanda
Babysitting for Beginners by InterruptingDinosaur
The Deaf and the Blind and the Color Red by Rayndrop
All You Ever Wanted At Just the Wrong Time by dietpainlite aka @soyeahso
Whatever You Need and Elemental by @petratodd
Client Billing 2012 and  Longer Than the Road That Stretches Out Ahead by @sunken-standard

👽 Random X-Files Fic Rec
If you have not read this story, you NEED to read it. If you have read it, you need to read it AGAIN. It is the funniest casefile romance fic you may ever read. It may also be the only one because it is incredibly unique with a fantastic story, amusing original characters, a Latin-speaking demon, and Scully really just wanting to stop talking about demons and instead spend hours in a four poster bed with Mulder. Give it a try, you will not be disappointed. Title: Malus Genius, vel Hoc Lemma Nequiquam Latine Scribitur (The Evil Spirit, or This Title Is Written In Latin for No Reason) Author: Plausible Deniability and MaybeAmanda Summary: What's *your* evil spirit? Length: 158k (~26,800 words) Classification: MSR, X-File, romance, angst, humor Rating: NC-17 Spoilers: Brief episode references late in the story; no major spoilers. This is a stand-alone, with the typical stand-alone disregard for the mytharc. Favorite line: Nothing in fourteen years of teaching had prepared him for handling warty, foul-mouthed spawns of Satan. High school students were frequently foul-mouthed and sadistic, but very few of them had horns and came from the dark netherworld. Read the story!

this is where stars are born by axonsandsynapses (1K)
"Mulder, I told you, nothing good would come of-" "Scully, this police box turns up everywhere! There are photos of it appearing since, well, photography was invented! There are even ancient historical records that hint at its existence! What did you want me to do when it turned up on that street corner? It's an incredible opportunity-"
(scully and mulder come across the TARDIS and ten takes them on a little trip.)
*
alien abduction time lord style by zinjadu (3K)
“Time travel? Mulder, despite the many, many, many limitations of the physical possibility of time travel, this one is outside of our jurisdiction. Most of the sightings are in London, not to mention upwards of a decade to multiple centuries ago. How are we, as FBI agents, supposed to deal with this one?” “Vacation time,” was Mulder’s answer. Scully rolled her eyes. “I’m not spending my vacation time on chasing around a man that might or might not exist, and if he does exist the only crime he’s committed is making bad Photoshop edits.”
(naturally, she'll come along ;) and they meet nine, rose and jack)

space enough and time by maybeamanda (7K)
scully accompanies mulder to a conference in cardiff where they meet ten and rose. --this is a fab one! super hilarious, and lots of adventures are being had!

the flexible concept of tomorrow (part 2) (ao3) by finisterre (11K)
“And you don’t travel with your friend any more?” She shakes her head. “We had a philosophical disagreement about how people who ignore other people when they say ‘no’ deserve a smack. And these days I think I cramp his style with the young ‘uns. But the big idiot is family - we meet up for tea and a good bicker and I occasionally have to slap some sense into him.”
or Five Times Donna Noble Remembers Meeting That Bloke With The Stupid Name (And One Time She Doesn't) or Five Times Fox Mulder Remembers Meeting That Other Redhead (And One Time He Doesn't)
(I LOVE THIS STORY SO MUCH.)

Post-Episode/Missing Scene Thursday
If there’s one scene, just one, that we wish we could have seen instead of it happening off screen (okay, besides all things), it would have been the things we never got to see in Per Manum. Since Mulder was still missing, and the episode is very much Scullycentric, the least we should have gotten were the exact words Scully stumbled over trying to ask him to be the father of her child. Maybe the point of not giving us that scene was the fact that it wasn’t the asking that Scully remembered as being important, but the answer Mulder finally gave.
Regardless, this fic makes Mulder’s response, which is canonically rather circumspect, make so much more sense. It’s written as only MaybeAmanda can do. Prose so sharp it cuts right to the heart and a Mulder inner monologue that basically had us sobbing like we were watching Per Manum for the first time all over again.
Title:  Sojourn
Author: MaybeAmanda
Rating: PG-13
Length: 9K / 4,000+ Words
Synopsis: Just tell her.
Spoilers:  Per Manum
Triggers: None we’re aware of

Hi there. I'm looking for a fic, i think? Molly wants to have a baby, so Sherlock, naturally, offers to be the father. I do remember at one point in the story it's discussed that as a child sherlock was taken to a series of doctors and five of them said he was slightly autistic, only one saying a highly fuctioning sociopath. Does this ring a bell at all?
Absolutely that is this story (actually part of a series):
Sustain by MaybeAmanda (Rated M, Complete, Multi-Chapter) ff.net 2011
An early early Sherlolly fic, one of the first so Sherlock is S1 Sherlock, John marries Sarah and countless other differences between what you might read nowadays. Enjoy!
