Evangleion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time (2021, dir. Hideaki Anno) - review by Rookie-Critic

Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time, wow what a title, was a very fitting end to a franchise that has had people scratching their heads for decades. This film manages to somehow wrap up a lot of character conflicts and plot pieces that the original chose to ignore, while at the same time choosing not to answer many other questions this new Evangelion series of films (dubbed the Rebuild films) raised itself throughout its 4-movie run. Keeping in the true spirit of Eva, there are things that are confusing as hell. Terms that have never been used or mentioned before are dropped like a sack of bricks without explanation, treated as a completely normal thing to say, and then absolutely never brought up again. It is the one thing about this franchise that I have always found maddening. However, Hideaki Anno, the creator of Neon Genesis Evangelion, has matured a lot since he wrapped up his original series back in 1997 with the very pessimistic, nihilistic End of Evangelion film. That isn't meant as a slight to End of Eva, I hold that film very near and dear to my heart and consider it a very good film in its own right, but it is what it is, and mostly it's a wild, confusing mess that ends on a note of "flawed people will try with good intentions, and they will fail, and they will learn very little from it."

Here, Anno ops for a much more optimistic path, one that chooses to dive as deep as possible into its characters' respective shortcomings, examine them, and have those characters face them head-on. Even the most irredeemable, piece of trash characters from the original series (if you've seen any Eva anything you all know exactly who I'm referring to) gets their chance in the emotionally analytical spotlight, and it's that exact analysis that sets the Rebuild films apart from their predecessor in the best way possible. As cliche as it is, the very root of this film is that old adage "hurt people hurt people," and they especially hurt those that are closest to them. However, instead of just stopping dead at the end of that statement, Anno then tacks on "but we can all better ourselves, and it's never too late to fix those frayed or broken ties, even if they're with yourself." It's almost as if the franchise has recognized its own shortcomings and meta-narratively acknowledged them; attempting (and succeeding, might I add) to better itself. Maybe the unanswered questions are an acknowledgement that it is still imperfect, as we all are, and that nothing and no one is ever truly done growing, done learning, done adapting. The Evangelion franchise, in its own weird, convoluted, and beautiful way, has managed to reflect humanity in a way I haven't quite ever seen before, and it's certainly awe-inspriring.

Score: 9/10

P.S. and a HUGE DISCLAIMER: This is NOT a stand alone film, and cannot be watched without its 3 counterparts. Even if you have seen them, if you haven't watched them in the past few months, you're going to want to rewatch the other 3 before you even think about attempting this one. All 4 Rebuild films are streaming on Prime Video.

In all reality, you should probably still watch the series as well prior to the Rebuild films, although that's not really required. The series, as well as the original two films that go with it (Death & Rebirth and End of Evangelion) are all 3 streaming on Netflix.

Oh, yeah, I’m a bit familiar with the Japanese dub of Assassin’s Creed and I watch Demon Slayer when it’s airing in Japan then I rewatch it in the English dub because I enjoy watching English dubs in general XD.

For the actual ask portion:

Altaïr would probably be annoyed at Uzui at first because he’s so flashy. They’d probably spar and Altaïr would start to respect him after understanding that, underneath all that ‘flashiness’, Uzui is strong and has conviction (side note: Uzui’s three wives makes me think Makio - Maria, Hinatsuru - Adha and Suma - Kadar XD)

Ezio would think of Sanemi as having skills and potential but he won’t like his attitude. AC2!Ezio would definitely butt heads with Sanemi a lot, especially after he sees how Sanemi acts around his younger brother (since he doesn’t know the whole story) and he’d definitely try to act like a nice big brother to Genya, Brotherhood!Ezio and Revelations!Ezio would not be provoked by Sanemi and act more like an older brother/mentor role that Sanemi doesn’t want at all and thinks is super annoying.

Haganezuka would totally like Ratonhnhaké:ton because Ratonhnhaké:ton would take care of any weapon he receives from Haganezuka. Ratonhnhaké:ton will also be willing to listen to Haganezuka talk about swords for houurrrss. Achilles would have to be the one to smack Haganezuka to get out of the homestead after giving Ratonhnhaké:ton his sword. (Why is Achilles there? Idk, crossover???)

All I can think of is Arno getting adopted by the Kamado family. Tanjuro is quite frail and he’s been sick for a while now so their meeting would probably remind Arno of his late father. But, man, just imagine Arno dancing Hinokami Kagura…

Oh god. Enmu would totally fuck with Jacob using his dreams/nightmares. Like, every pain and weakness Jacob has, Enmu would take advantage of it. Worst of all? Jack the Ripper's actions would definitely haunt Jacob till the day he dies so Enmu using Jack in the attack would really hurt. Enmu wasn’t even a good person as a human but considering Jacob’s luck and bad judge of character? Absolutely won’t be surprised if he invites human!Enmu to the Rooks as a ‘doctor’.

I think Bayek has a good chance of taking out Yahaba. Dude got an actual flaming sword in the main story and I’m sure Reda would have a weapon made of Scarlet Crimson Iron Sand and Scarlet Ore for some reason and, as long as Bayek understood how Yahaba’s blood demon art works, he’d be fine. Bayek took out giant gods (in the Animus), he can take out this demon.

Oh, Aya would not like Daki at all. She might even be reminded of Cleopatra a bit because of her arrogant and dismissive personality which wouldn’t help the situation. They’d definitely fight and… Aya would probably need help on this one. I’m not sure if she ever got into any Isu BS that ended in a boss fight so I can’t be sure how she would handle fighting Daki and her obi attacks. Human!Daki though? Aya would definitely recruit her and her brother to the Hidden Ones if she found them as kids. But if she saw her as her usual cruel self? Yeah, Aya’s not going to like her.

Anyways I found the notes in my sketchbook and god this font is so small and hard to read.

Anyways according to these notes, it looks like Mori was going to be SHSL luck and also the victim instead of the murderer, which is funny. (It looks like I had potentially lined up Seki as SHSL Pilot.)

I guess I should also mention that what I listed as trial 4 and trial 5 were for the longest time reversed, I had Tsubame’s trial first and the extra bodies after. I only really changed it like. Just now. As I was putting together the summaries.

A lot of the character and murder outlines seem to be the same, just some weird details here and there. Second murder changed most of all. (This was the one that originally involved a door that just opens into the chimney.) Both Katashi and Tsubame I had a note about “lonely-at-the-top” vibes? And apparently Katashi embraced it while Tsubame angsts about it.

My notes on Megumi says that when you hang out with her, she wants you get her some juicy information on the others and will get immediately pissed off if you give her your own juicy info.

There was also a “themed lesson” to each trial, it seemed, which I entirely forgot about. (“Lesson 1” was “even SHSL will resort to murder for self-preservation.”)

Fall 2023 Anime List

Summer season went fast as always, loved them a lot and there was lots of interesting anime. Fall season is on the door, and can't wait to see more anime, and different genres, hopefully able to watch most of the list in the fall season. 29/9

お嬢と番犬くん/Ojou to Banken-kun/A Girl & Her Guard Dog Can't wait to see this, Umehara Yuuichiro being main character's voice actor. Keiya looks so hot, aaaaaahhhh. 葬送のフリーレン/Sousou no Frieren/Frieren: Beyond Journey's End PV looked great, and first episode is 2 hours long, can't wait to see this, YOASOBI is singing OP and Okamoto and Kobayashi is in the cast. お嬢と番犬くん/Ojou to Banken-kun/A Girl & Her Guard Dog Can't wait to see this, Umehara Yuuichiro being main character's voice actor. め組の大吾救国のオレンジ/Megumi no Daigo: Kyuukoku no Orange/Firefighter Daigo: Rescuer in Orange Looks intense and interesting, Kenjiro Tsuda is narrating this, and Nakamura Yuichi with Sakura Ayane, Yashiro Taku and Enoki Junya.

ラグナクリムゾン/Ragna Crimson Have been waiting for this a long time, it looks so great and action scenes were nicely done. Murase Ayumu with Kobayashi Chiaki is great pair so looking forward to hear them. Also Suwabe Junichi is there. オーバーテイク！/Overtake! Racing anime, which is first for me. PV looked great, and can't wait to see this one, Konishi Katsuyuki is main character's voice, have started to like his work the more I hear him. Also Hatanaka Tasuku is singing ED. シャングリラ・フロンティア～クソゲーハンター、神ゲーに挑まんとす～/Shangri-La Frontier: Kusoge Hunter, Kamige ni Idoman to su/ Shangri-La Frontier Uchida Yuuma being main character's voice actor, so it's always nice to hear him, and story as well as animation style looked interesting, Sunraku playing VR game and getting know to the world inside it.

MFゴースト/MF Ghost Second racing anime of the season, so I'm being fed good. This one has great cast, Uchida Yuuma voicing main character, and Sakura Ayane voicing Saionji Ren. Animation style looked nice, and racing parts intense. 鴨乃橋ロンの禁断推理/Kamonohashi Ron no Kindan Suiri/Ron Kamonohashi: Deranged Detective One of the season's anime I have been waiting eagerly, PV looked great, and intense with the murder mysteries. Ron (Azakami Youhei) looks so hot. UNISON SQUARE GARDEN is singing OP, so looking forward to hear their song again. ミギとダリ/Migi to Dali/Migi & Dali Story is interesting, also animation style is looking nice and can't wait to see this. Cast is great, Murase Ayumu and Shun Horie with Takeuchi Shunsuke and Asanuma Shintarou. とあるおっさんのVRMMO活動記/Toaru Ossan no VRMMO Katsudouki/A Certain Middle-Aged Man's VRMMO Activity Log Also game anime, VRMMO game. Looks nice, colorful and funny, Ishikawa Kaito is Earth, main caharcter's voice actor. Can't wait to see this, and hear Ishikawa.

聖女の魔力は万能です Season2/Seijo no Maryoku wa Bannou desu 2nd Season/The Saint's Magic Power is Omnipotent Season 2 Yay, 2nd season. Have been waiting this since the first season was over. Also see Hawke and Drewes once again. 東京リベンジャーズ天竺編/Tokyo Revengers: Tenjiku-hen 3rd season of Tokyo Revengers, haven't seen 2nd season yet so probably have to watch this later. Paradox Live THE ANIMATION Music anime, so curious to see this although haven't been following their music or other stuff they have already published.

婚約破棄された令嬢を拾った俺が、イケナイことを教え込む/Konyaku Haki sareta Reijou wo Hirotta Ore ga, Ikenai Koto wo Oshiekomu PV was hilarious and funny, so eagerly waiting to see this. Demon Lord -he's hot - teaching all the bad habits to a girl.

暴食のベルセルク/Boushoku no Berserk/Berserk of Gluttony PV was backed with action and animation style was great with beautiful scenes. So curious to see this anime, and Oosaka Ryouta with Seki Tomokazu being in the cast. 柚木さんちの四兄弟。/Yuzuki-san Chi no Yonkyoudai. This is going to be most precious and emotional anime as PV was so good, and loved Yuzuki's brothers relationships so much with each other. Especially the youngest is so cute. ビックリメン/Bikkurimen Not sure about this one but I'm curious to see stickers' battles.

アンダーニンジャ/Under Ninja Ninja anime, looked interesting. Ban Taito being main character's voice. 冒険者になりたいと都に出て行った娘がSランクになってた/Boukensha ni Naritai to Miyako ni Deteitta Musume ga S-Rank ni Natteta/My Daughter Left the Nest and Returned an S-Rank Adventurer Suwabe Junichi is in the cast, also Hayami Saori whom voice I have started to love so much, and story is a bit different than usually, so excited for this one too.

新しい上司はど天然/Atarashii Joushi wa Do Tennen/ My New Boss Is Goofy This is going to be so cute, PV was funny and sweet, especially Hakuto kitty. Great cast; Umehara Yuuichirou, Nishiyama Koutarou, Shimono Hiro, Sugita Tomokazu and Fukuyama Jun. アンデッドアンラック/Undead Unluck Supernatural anime with bizzare powers of the characters. Unlucky girl and immortal boy who get know to each other. Nakamura Yuichi is voicing Andy, and mysterious group is full of nice voice actors. はめつのおうこく/Hametsu no Oukoku/The Kingdoms of Ruin Ishikawa Kaito and Sato Hinoshi in the cast. Story sounds interesting, and Who-ya Extended is singing ED so can't wait to hear it. ゴブリンスレイヤーⅡ/Goblin Slayer II Finally 2nd season of Goblin Slayer!!! Can't wait to see them again, and of course Umehara Yuuichirou voicing Goblin Slayer, and hear his deep and honeyed voice. 最果てのパラディン鉄錆の山の王/Saihate no Paladin: Tetsusabi no Yama no Ou/The Faraway Paladin Season 2 2nd season of Faraway Paladin, so excited to see them again, especially Will and Menel. This season's story/arc looks interesting and lots of new characters to meet. SPY×FAMILY Season 2 Seeing Loid, Yor and Anya again, eagerly waiting new season and the movie later.

僕らの雨いろプロトコル/Bokura no Ameiro Protocol/Our Rainy Protocol E-sports anime, so interesting to see this kind of anime, and PV looked nice. Also Kimura Ryouhei voicing Sendou Akito. 豚のレバーは加熱しろ/Buta no Liver wa Kanetsu Shiro/Heat the Pig Liver: The Story of a Man Turned Into a Pig This is rather eccentric story, man turned into a pig who travels with the girl. Matsuoka Yoshitsugu is voicing the pig. 帰還者の魔法は特別です/Kikansha no Mahou wa Tokubetsu desu/ A Returner's Magic Should Be Special Korean web manga, and PV was great, it's nice to see time travelling anime. So curious to see this how it goes. Terashima Takuma is voicing MC. ティアムーン帝国物語～断頭台から始まる、姫の転生逆転ストーリー～/Tearmoon Teikoku Monogatari: Dantoudai kara Hajimaru, Hime no Tensei Gyakuten Story/Tearmoon Empire This is cute one, also time travel anime. The cast is great; Uesaka Sumire, Umehara Yuuichirou, Furukawa Makoto, Matsuoka Yoshitsugu and Masuda Toshiki. 黙示録の四騎士/Nanatsu no Taizai: Mokushiroku no Yonkishi/The Seven Deadly Sins: Four Knights of the Apocalypse Animation style is different but looks good, so curious to see this. 君のことが大大大大大好きな100人の彼女/Kimi no Koto ga Daidaidaidaidaisuki na 100-nin no Kanojo/The 100 Girlfriends Who Really, Really, Really, Really, Really Love You Quite interesting story, and cast is nice, so curious how this will turn out.

ドッグシグナル/Dog Signal Excited to see this anime, it sounds great and cute. KENN and Ono Kensho is in the cast so glad to hear them. 薬屋のひとりごと/Kusuriya no Hitorigoto/ The Apothecary Diaries PV was so beautiful, and Jinshi (Ootsuka Takeo) is so hot. Also Mao Mao (Yuuki Aoi) is cute and glad to hear her once again some more.
