So … this happened.
Tumblr media
The Formula 1 community — and sports fandom as a whole — needs to have a serious conversation about the dangerous commodification and objectification of athletes.
And I know, I write fanfiction — what right do I have talking about any of this? But there is a reason why the cardinal rule of fanfiction is to keep it far removed from those featured in it. Because those of us who create and consume it know about the importance of boundaries.
Boundaries … that are repeatedly being crossed by so-called fans who choose to forget that Formula 1 drivers and all athletes are human beings while sickeningly violating their privacy and encroaching on their safety in real life.
Things need to change.
This is an issue of morality, dignity, and security. It cannot continue.

Certain sections of F1 media literally can’t breathe without denigrating Susie Wolff. When she got appointed managing director of F1A - it’s because of Toto. When F1A has success - it’s because she’s married to Toto and he’s influenced the other teams. When Toto is accused of something unethical - “did you know his wife works with the FIA?” [even though she’s not involved in this at all and is not accused of having leaked information]
Susie Wolff is a racing driver in her own right. She’s been a successful Team Principal in Formula E, and CEO of a racing team (one that was in direct competition with Mercedes might I add). She was a Formula 1 development driver and the first woman to drive in a Grand Prix weekend for more than 20 years.
She has a career that she’s earned on her own, completely separate from who she chose to marry, and the reduction of her to just “Toto’s wife” - including by other F1 Team Principals - is such blatant, ugly sexism.
“Imagine if Geri Horner was working in F2?” If Geri Horner had Susie’s resume I would love for her to be working in motorsports because we need more women in motorsports at all levels, including at the top?

you: god fiction is so weird. Why are you making that literal child the scapegoat for a self-destructing system by claiming he's going to fix everything you fucked up? Lmao that would never happen in real life
Williams Formula One Team: hey FIA we found this guy his name is Kimi 'doomed by the narrative' Antonelli, can we please put our every expectation on him to be the next Senna and also Hamilton and also Verstappen? He is eight years old.

i wasn't able to watch the end of the race live today and i just finished it, and i gotta say, we shouldn't have expected anything different lol
i deluded myself into thinking a new year meant a shakeup in finishing orders, but i mean when the grid is the same from the end of last year and the beginning of this year and red bull was just making their already rocketship of a car better, it makes total sense that this just felt like a 2023 race
the ferrari overtakes were fun though! amazing how they were able to keep it that tight in the corner and not knock each other out
i feel so so bad for logan 😭 he was lapped by half the field by the end of the race!! i forget what happened to him at the beginning but it was all downhill for him, sadly
i also wonder what happened with lewis' seat?? like how does a top team make a seat that breaks halfway through the race?? they've been at that track for three days of testing, three practice sessions, and qualifying and they still somehow broke their seat?? wild
and what the hell was that strategy call with yuki and daniel??? i get why both daniel and yuki were upset with it - yuki wanted to catch the haas in front and daniel wanted the swap to happen faster, and then yuki was even more frustrated when daniel couldn't catch the haas even after the swap - and the swap didn't really make sense. but i think yuki shouldn't have made that move on daniel during the cooldown lap. it was super dangerous for both of them, and there's better ways to express his (very valid) frustration. hopefully the team works that out and fixes their strategy calls for next weekend
but RAAAAHHH CARLOS PODUIM LETS GOOO SMOOOOOOTH OPERATORRRRRRRRR

He’s got most of us in a chokehold, I fear! 😅
Melbourne was an extremely tough one on all of us. Hopefully better moments are on the way in Suzuka and beyond! 💙

I always think about this photo, not only because it’s from the 2016 wcc celebrations and I think about that season a lot, but also because one by one everyone has left (or is leaving in Lewis’ case) and only Toto remains.
Like James Allison is back, yes, but most of the original team that made Mercedes what it was is gone. Merc is a shadow of what it used to be and the loss of Lewis will hit them much harder than I think most people are expecting.
Because while drivers may want that seat because right now Merc is better than their current teams, you have to ask yourself why Lewis Hamilton of all people — someone who is synonymous to Merc in the way Max Verstappen is to Red Bull and Charles Leclerc is to Ferrari — decided to leave? Something went wrong in one of the most successful driver/team pairings to cause it. If they’re not listening to Lewis Hamilton, what makes you think they’ll listen to you?

Ok let's address Jamie Chadwick's comments because ofc this discourse continues. It took me 7 hrs to comprehend what she actually said sue me. I'm tired, it's week 13/13 of uni.
The second part of her response is true no doubt about it. Mercedes don't NEED to split the upgrades between both cars. They haven't in years to my knowledge and so Monaco was a first for a lot of fans. McLaren splits their upgrades, so do Aston and Williams to give a couple examples. Mercedes just never needed to because their performance was always to a standard they didn't need to rush the upgrades on one car. Now they do. The drivers themselves have questioned why they always wait for both parts to be ready (source: see Shov's answer in Merc's Monaco debrief). It has been said many many times and proven they had two different front wings in Monaco. There's no need for her to speculate on whether or not Lewis had the upgrades. He didn't. Now this article was modified yesterday (29/05) but idk when it was originally written because it only talks about qualifying and nothing about his response after the race 🤷‍♀️. Either way we already saw the different front wings on Friday.
But Lewis should be giving his hats off to George. Maybe not in so many words but the shady comments followed by a smirk does not help things whatsoever. He very well knows how his fans react online, he knows the way certain accounts write things. However full judgement is on hold for now because technically (and I really mean technically there's so many nuances i could go into but I won't rn) this is the first time he's reacted like this so it honestly just could be adrenaline. Although backing it up with more shady comments after the race doesn't help his case.
Keep an eye on it or don't but if there is this much discourse over a bloody front wing because someone can't answer a question with just a straight answer I wish everyone good luck dealing with stuff after the summer break.
