Thoughts About Terminology in Smut from a Tumblr Elder

Friends, I've been on tumblr since 2012 and writing smut since 2006. I understand a lot of you are younger and newer to writing smut. This said, I keep coming across fics with graphic and derogatory terms which make me immediately stop reading your writing.

So I figured, I'd share my thoughts and opinions on the matter to either help you with writing smut or improve to keep your audience interested.

Now, as I said, these are my opinions. These are not rules or guidelines you need to follow. You don't have to agree with them, but I genuinely dislike most smut out there because of the wording, so here we go.

The Problem

Being younger/newer writers, I understand that you're going to get your terminology from the media and porn, giving you words like tits, dick, cock, and pussy. These words are NOT sexy.

I read the phrase today "bouncing on his dick." Who is this meant to turn on? "Ah yes baby, bounce on my dick, lemme see your tits jiggle." This creates the opposite of arousal and sounds like the teens in horror movies, boning with the killer watching them before they die.

Bounce and jiggle are also not sexy. Again, I know we hear these words in media, especially music, but I think that's a big part of why they're not sexy. When I hear "jiggle" I think of jello. If you're turned on by jiggling jello, we have other issues to discuss.

The main reason tits, dick, cock, and pussy are not sexy, is because they're primarily used in a derogatory sense. If you're calling someone a "dick" you mean it in a bad way, like they're a terrible human being that generally no one likes. My personal favorite insults are "eat a dick" and "what a bag of dicks." These are insults, meant to be hurtful, so trying to turn and use them in a sexy way, it just comes off as vulgar and not sensual in the way you would want it.

Possible Solutions

Chest I know Big Matthew of Kard blew up the internet when he referred to Wonho of Monsta X's chest by saying "that man has some big ol' tiddies" but he wasn't saying it to be sexy. It was said casually, and since has been used to be funny. Tits have never been a sexy word. It's been used in phrases like "colder than a witch's tit" or like some old mobster "hey tuts, show me your tits." Again, derogatory, not sexy. For guys, I like using chest/pecs/pectorals. Those with boobs, I keep it simple with breasts.

Penis There's nothing wrong with just using the word "penis." It's what it is actually called. It can be used for men/trans/nonbinary people who have one. I'd rather be "riding a penis" than "bouncing on a dick." Some people don't like "penis" because it's too medical a term, so that's when you can get creative. You don't actually have to say what it is. You can call it their length, girth, shaft, hard-on, hard evidence of their arousal, etc. There is always something sexy about keeping mystery in the language and by not outright saying what it is. This doesn't mean you have to go full on grocery store romance novel and use terms like "his enflamed tulip" or "his elephant's trunk" but even then, though it would make me stop and chuckle, I'd prefer "enflamed tulip" to "throbbing cock" any day. I would also steer clear of the phrase "nether regions" for both penis/vagina.

Vulva/Vagina Pussy has never been sexy to me. And with rappers/musical artists singing things like "ima beat that pussy up ugly" or "wet ass pussy" it's just an immediate turn off for me. If you're talking about the front/top area where the pubic bone is, mound or puss(different from pussy, more like a cute nickname for a cat, here puss puss) are my go tos. "Fupa" ew. I didn't even know what a fupa was and had to have it explained to me not too long ago. In general, please just stay away from slang terms. Slang in smut is not your friend. There's not too much that can be said for clitoris/clit. I think these terms are fine. If this is a focused area for a bit of the writing, it's nice to switch between terms. I also like using "bud" just to change up the language. Note; "bud" can also be used for nipples, so you're not using the word too much. Vulva is also a perfectly good word. I don't see a problem using the phrase "folds" though I know some people do. "Lips" is also okay, just make sure to specify they're lips between legs, not on a face. You would be correct in thinking there is nothing sexy about the word vagina. I think a big part of this is that it's been used incorrectly so often. DO NOT USE THE WORD CUNT. CUNT IS SUPA NOT SEXY AND EASILY THE MOST DEROGATOY OF THE TERMS DISCUSSED THUS FAR. When i hear/see the word "cunt" I think of The Exorcist, and the girl fucking herself with a crucifix. Are you turned on? Good, you shouldn't be. Like penis, it's good to keep a bit of mystery in the language. Instead of "vagina" you could say warmth, heat, core, entrance. "Slit" is not my favorite, but if you're looking for a change of language, I don't mind it. Please please please please please NEVER use the word "hole." Any and all arousal drops with the word "hole."

Butt There's not really much that can be used for butt/ass. These terms are fine. There's no way to be mysterious or sexy with the language by saying something like "grabbing their round moon" LOLOLOL HOWEVER, don't use anus. This is a time I will strongly advice against the use of medical/scientific terms. Just, no. If you're trying to describe anal play, just say it's anal play/anal. Again, I would strongly advise against using the word "hole" but instead just use the action of the peen or fingers "entering" or "pushing in."

Movements If I see the words jiggle or bounce in your fic, I'm done. I don't care what else is to be said. Sincerely, no one wants to see the word jiggle. Not anyone. I understand that being thrust into can cause body parts to move, but you don't need to mention it. Not that smut is necessarily classy, but saying "jiggle" does take class out of it. If a character has "jiggling" parts, I'm assuming they're in a jackhammer-esque situation, which already is not sexy. You're writing smut to turn someone on. Jackhammer is quick and doesn't last long. You want it to last long. The movements should be slow and intentional. Sensual is your goal, not speed. Alternatives to "bounce": gyrate, grind, push, thrust, pump, move up and down.

I probably have more to say than this, but as a basis, these are my thoughts. If anyone has more to add-on, please feel free to do so.

That next morning, I woke up with a knife two inches from my face, where I dropped it. Nothing had changed. After patrolling the house, I was still alone, and beginning to learn my way around. There was what felt like a black hole in my stomach, I hadn’t eaten in at least 24 hours, probably more. It was time to suck it up and venture into the food that was in the fridge.

“I mean, it must be safe to say the food is clean.” I can’t wait to be with you, replayed in my head. “Then I’d have to stay alive until then.” I reasoned with myself.

Yesterday I had tried to keep the talking to a minimum but gave up last night while I was shaking from the anxiety. “And even if it is poisonous, maybe it will kill me quick.”

“So,” I sighed, staring at the contents of the fridge. “This is an ingredients household.” Cereal, I decided, letting the doors of the refrigerator fall closed.

Sitting alone in a cold, empty, silent house was too much. So I cautiously turned on the TV. I was apprehensive. What if it was just false hope the No Signal message would blink back at me? Or what if I turned it on and it ended up being live footage of me like in some horror movie? To my excitement, the TV turned on. Flipping through the channels, most of them were Korean. Some were in English, like some news channels. On instinct, I plopped down on the couch and watched, would I appear on the news? Someone has to have noticed that I was gone, right? Or at least, they would sometime soon, right? Eventually my stomach growled, so I left the news on and watched while I ate. A missing persons report never made an appearance.

After breakfast, I took another lap around the house to engrain every step into my brain. I never stopped looking for a way out, but every window was barred every time I looked. No matter what I threw at the back wall, it never shattered, not so much as a scratch. These activities continued until lunch rolled around. Then I explored the kitchen cupboards and found a recipe book, my recipes. Despite being fully weirded out again, I managed to make something small.

Afterwards, I explored the books in the library more, crossing my fingers I’d find a false book with a key in it like in a TV show. That never happened. For dinner, I cooked something more complex, anything to spend my time on that could distract me from this eerie house. Ending the day with a long shower to wash off the distress. To close out my day I stole a notebook from the library and kept it like a diary, to record everything I could. When I got out of this place, I could show it to the public. Or maybe... If I died here someone could find it one day.

I carried on with this routine for several days. Eventually, after scouring through the library for hours, I found a single CD in a clear case in the desk. There was nothing written on it, but who keeps a single blank CD around, it has to have something on it. I hurried to play it on the living room TV. Somewhere along the line, I had become comfortable treating the house like my own.

While this Changkyun definitely didn’t deserve to be respected, for so long I was scared to so much as disturb the carpet. However, currently I was starting to treat things as if they were mine. Was I becoming too comfortable? I was alone after all and haven’t run into any threats in the house.

I stuck the CD into the player and loaded it. It was music. Music. I haven’t heard music outside of a TV commercial in days. In short, I was ecstatic. I’d never heard any of the songs before, but the singer was a man with a deep and soothing voice. I wasn’t at the point to let my guard down yet, but having music to listen to undeniably calmed my nerves. There were only a handful of songs on the CD and most of them were Korean; I played them on loop all day.

Today was day nine.

The routine I fell into became easy and I was glad to have some sort of structure. Although, I began to re-entertain the idea of being left here to die. Would Changkyun ever actually come? Or was the note just a ploy, a fake hint. Maybe I was doomed to live here until the food ran out and I simply disappeared. I tried not to entertain these ideas letting the music play in the background and drown out my thoughts, relax my nerves. Surprisingly the music grew on me, maybe when I ran away from here, I could take it with me? Now it was time to prepare lunch. I took a sip from a cup of hot tea and got to work.

Then I heard it. The unmistakable sound of a door opening.

My whole body tensed; I couldn’t move. What can I use? I placed the cup of tea on the hot stove, maybe I could burn him, and grabbed a knife. I couldn’t breathe, I’d tried to prepare myself for this, but now that the time has finally come, I just wanted to hide.

It was hard to hear footsteps over the music, but I did hear a voice calling out my name. “I’m home! Come out and greet me!”

No. His voice sounded familiar. Unmistakably, his was the voice on the CD. For a week, I’d been listening to and becoming accustomed to–no, begun to enjoy–Changkyun’s voice. Naturally, he followed the sound of the music and waltzed happily into the kitchen. Oh no. I know I shouldn’t think like this, but Changkyun is really attractive.

1. Between 7 and 5, who did you bias first?

Moonbin! Even though I learned about Stray Kids first (I got into kpop about a week before Back Door was released - I didn't know about Astro until March 2021) - Moonbin's always been my #1. Stray Kids... I think my bias order was something like Han > Bang Chan > Felix > Bang Chan > Changbin & Felix

2. Between 2 and 6, who are you more attached to?

Oh... this one's easy... Hwanwoong my beloved I'm so sorry - the answer's obviously Mijoo. I'd take a bullet for her.

3. If you were to spend the day with either 3 or 1, who would you choose and what would you do?

Now this. This question's painful. Part of me wants to say Wonho because it's Wonho, but...

Kei. Probably hang out, go out to eat, and watch horror movies, because - one of my fave fun facts - she loves horror/ghost movies? Which are my absolute fave. Literally would have never guessed looking at her.

4. what is your favorite physical feature about 9?

HAIR! Long hair! His mermaid hair means the world to me.

5. What is your favorite part of 6’s personality?

He's just a silly lil guy! I literally just watched a video where - he wasn't even the focus of it, but he just pops in to bully Leedo. Love him.

6. If you were to tell 8 anything you wanted, what would you tell them?

I'd tell Ryu Sujeong that her music is incredible, phenomenal, some of the best work I've ever heard. I'd tell her to please for the love of god keep making full albums. Love the indie vibe she's going for right now - but I'd kinda want to see if she'd ever go and do something like Tiger Eyes again - so I'd find a way to bring that up.

7. Between 1 and 2, whose closet would you raid?

Love everything Mijoo wears but let's be real I'm not fitting into any of that - so Wonho.

8. What is a style that you want to see 3 try?

THIS IS THEE QUESTION!!! Kei is sooo amazing & super brave because she's tried many styles outside her comfort zone! Like her trouble maker performance on Artistock? Loved that. I don't think she's the best at it - but I'd love to see it again. Honestly I feel like her style jumping is going to be her downfall in Queendom Puzzle - but I'm so pumped for it. Really hoping for another performance like wish you were gay on Queendom 1. I think she'd kill something like that now. I think Kei in a dark concept would just be fun to see - I know she was in the Death Note musical so like... She was styled that way, but it'd be interesting to see her cover Pixy/Dreamcatcher/PinkFantasy or oooh VIXX. Kei VIXX cover when.

9. Between 5 and 4, who are you closer to in height?

Leedo! He's an inch taller than me.

10. Between 10 and 9, whose music do you like the best?

Oh god I have no clue. Monsta X and Onlyoneof both have really big hits & misses for me. I will say I liked Kihyuns solo work more than Junji's....
