i would like to take a moment to talk about this moment in Moon Knight episode 3:
Tumblr media
Why? Because this is the first time Steven refers to him and Marc as "we". "we're inside" Up until this point, he didn't. Marc used "we" and "us" since the beginning. "Let me save us" in episode 1 or "what the hell are we wearing?" in episode 2. But for Steven it was always "you" and "I"
This is the first time Steven uses "we". And he continues to do it after, like the "What are you gonna do, drown us?" in episode 4.
It's a very interesting detail and a great way of showing Steven's journey into accepting Marc and coming to terms with it all

Honestly I talk a lot about Marc and Steven and im jealous that Layla is married to them but honest to god I just love Layla to!
Not only is she as pretty as an deluxe beachside resort and as scary as a volitile wild animal she’s so caring and understanding.
Sure she thinks Steven is some kind of fake persona he’s put on to get himself out of something but you can see her so quickly go from “wait a minute he’s serious” to “oh shit! Bonus husband!!”
I can see her interest in how it works and honestly she kinda looks like she likes watching them switch. I can’t see her just asking them to switch just for her entertainment but I can see Steven or Marc starting to kind of feel a switch and trying to warn Layla about it before it happens so she can watch.
I love Layla just as much as the system. I can see why Marc married her! She’s a powerful, independent, go getter of a woman but she’s soft at the same time. She’s smart to! Cunning and tricky at just the right amount.
I really really like her curls to hahah. She’s got nice hair.

It's 3am and I just can't stop thinking about how Marc literally hid his super secret and important items, including his phone and storage key,
in the fucking kitchen.
He could've hid these items literally ANYWHERE. But no. THE KITCHEN WAS THE BEST PLACE MARC COULD THINK OF
Anyway look at this for reference okay
Tumblr media
Basically, Marc consistently came home after every missions and just shoved his shit above the kitchen and hoped for the best. And it worked! Until it didn't and he forgot to put the plank fully back into place.
Now to explain further, what makes everything slightly funnier about Steven finding Marc's stuff later on, is the fact that not only did Marc obviously slip up after all these years, but Gus is the reason why.
Like, I imagine Marc getting home after acquiring the scarab and climbing onto his little table stand and just putting his shit away in the kitchen like normal, only to glance down and see poor Gus just belly up in his tank (which is literally right next to the kitchen as you can see in my example). So in a panic, he just haphazardly puts the little plank of wood back and rushes to the nearest fish store to find a replacement. And we all know how that goes from there.
Anyway, all of his years of secrecy and perfect planning were thrown out the window because he couldn't think of literally ANYWHERE ELSE to hide his shit.
So yeah, that's my ramble for the night. Thank you for listening to my ted talk

Not me once again losing my mind over Steven and Oscar’s portrayal of him. The way he goes from nearly grim determination to “I can feel your pain and my heart is hurting for you” to “Hey, it’s okay, I am here, let me comfort you” 🥺
Not to mention how his facial expressions are so clearly distinguishable from the Steven who was going through several different kind of emotions while witnessing Marc’s breakdown only a few seconds ago and from present Marc and from past Steven and from past Marc and all of that was shot on the same fricking day, I am sorry, I just…💥💥💥

Breaking down the Comics: Writing a legend, building a history.
Today we aren't reviewing an issue of Moon Knight. Today we are going to talk about something important.
So who wrote Moon Knight?
"Easy!", you might say. "Doug Moench!"
Sure. But you'd be surprised to find that it's not as much as you'd think.
Doug Moench wrote issues 1-15, 17-26, 28-33.
He returns in 1998 for a 4 issue mini seires Vol 3 "Resurrection Wars" which revives Marc Spector, who had been killed off in the previous volume.
He continues in 1999 with Vol 4, another 4 issue mini series "High Strangers/Strangeness" which won an award for favorite limited series.
He also wrote werewolf by Night, which gave us the first iteration of Moon Knight. An instantly popular character that made appearances in other comics like "The Hulk" before he was given his own comic.
He had time to work on the designs with Bill Sienkiewicz. They built up the weapons, the costume, the cab, and the copter.
He also built up the side characters of Gena, Gena's two boys, Crawley, Frenchie, Detective Flint, and Marlene.
He set the ground rules:
Moon Knight system is Jewish.
Marc, Jake, and Steven are a part of a system and are not one man pretending to be someone else
Jake is the one that is friendly and loves being with the people.
Steven is posh, collected, and takes care of things.
Marc is the one with experience, has the skills needed to get things done, and holds all the pain.
They are former Mercenaries who did terrible things and have deep guilt.
Khonshu resurrected them to act as Moon Knight
They strive to protect any who would come to them for help that perhaps might not get it elsewhere
I would even argue that he was building up to the fact that Moon Knight himself was his own form of alter but it has since been glossed over and replaced with the idea that Marc is most often the one under the mask.
Pretty simple rules to follow to make it a Moon Knight comics, but you'd be surprised what some writers have done with it.
These comics were written long before DID was acknowledged and the different forms of PTSD and Dissociation were defined.
And yet, here we stand with a traumazied man from Chicago slowly working through a freshly cognizant system and trying to figure out how three (four) people can work together towards not just a life, but life as a superhero who wants to help people.
Further more, an odd thing happened in this.
We had a comic that often focused more on mental health than on super powers, heroics, or villains.
More often than not, we watched Marc, Jake, and Steven struggle with themselves and one another. We watched stories unfold from the villain's point of view, often just being ordinary people pushed too far by a system that failed them.
More so, we watched Moon Knight sympathise with these villains.
How often he let them walk away or he let them kill their abusers, wondering if he was doing wrong himself.
How can he help when sometimes the help he offers is not what is needed?
We even watched him fail. We saw him lose his temper and cause damage. We saw him curl into a ball and break. We saw him get lost in his own nightmares and dissociative fuges.
Moench stepped forward and often handled current events with raw emotion. We saw his characters cry over the loss of public iconic figures. We watched people struggling as they returned from war. We saw child abuse and poverty. We watched economic struggles with classism and we watched people struggle to deal with grief.
We even watched them deal with antisemitism over and over again. How many times were the victims of his stories Jewish and trying to survive in America? What about the story that took place with the mass shooting in the Synagoug? We heard stories of Generational trauma as elders struggled with survival after the Holocaust.
Moon Knight was a unique comic unlike any other I've ever come across. For it's time and for it's topics at the time. What's more, this comic continued.
It was no 'special of the week' comic and spanned multiple years as they grew.
What do we know about Moench? Who did he write this comic for?
The Moon Knight in the Were Wolf by Night certainly didn't have all this depth. He was just a man dressed in silver, fighting a monster and ultimately choosing the side of the monster.
Moench himself was from Chicago. He knew what it was like to live in the city and see the fall of factories and hard times on the streets. We know he witnessed the times of Vietnam veterans being forgotten and abused. He witnessed a lot of changes happening in the world and the places he was writing about.
He wrote about what spoke to him and what he saw around him.
And in his stories, there often were no clear heroes, winners, or villains.
But there was one issue that he chose to add into this comic that was already filled with so many things that other comics avoided.
Moon Knight wasn't written as Jewish in that one shot cameo. He wasn't written with DID either, but I'll get to that.
There are interviews of Doug admitting that "I didn't say, 'I'm going to sit down and create a Jewish character.'"
In fact, he picked a name and later found out it was a Jewish name. This made him do research. Not just into Judaism, but into the areas that Marc Spector fought in and where his family came from.
Do you have any idea how many writers of that time and our current time simply slap the label of "Jewish" on a character and refuse to actually look into what makes them Jewish?
I can't say how much he researched and how much he got wrong or right, but I do know that when he did choose to dive into topics that touched on certain issues, he handled them with a grace that is often overlooked.
The writer that came after Moench? Alan Zelenetz, a former Jewish day school principal from Brooklyn.
Zelenetz had been acting as an editor for a bit before he took a look at Moench's early start.
And it was in Issue 37 and 38 where we get the real backstory of Marc Spector. A man running from his Rabbi father.
Marc now became the son of an Orthodox Rabbi who had been forced to flee Czechoslovakia after the Nazi invasion.
Here, we get the story of Marc running to the Marines. Running to the mercenaries, and running from home. Perhaps even, running from G-d.
Zelenetz wanted to lean into the Jewish past and Jewish story. He explored themes of using a holy book to create a villain while playing with Jewish myths. He also explored Antisemitism without toning it down or hiding it under comic bookish villainy. He portrayed Moon Knight facing white supremacist vandalizing a Jewish Cemetery. He showed Moon Knight saving the Torah from a Synagogue fire. He also showed a strained relationship and the question of Moon Knight finding his own relationship in what he does with his father's views.
Alan Zelenetz edited/wrote shorts for issues 18, 21–22, 27, 32, Then wrote the whole story for issues 36–38.
Zelenetz voiced that he was looking to add some Jewish representation into his workforce and perhaps into the comic industry at the time. Considering his background, perhaps he was the only one at the time that had the proper knowledge to play with things the way that he did in the story of Elias Spector's death and Marc Spector's pain.
He did not stick around with Moon Knight for long after. Though, he admits that he wanted to play with the fact that Khonshu was an Egyptian god and Marc was from such a Jewish background. I am sad we didn't get to see that story.
After that, Moon Knight's original 1980s run was finished. The question of what to do with Moon Knight, where to take him, and who would take up the mantle of writing him now lay in the hands of Marvel.
Many failed after this. They failed to keep the heart of what Moon Knight stood for and who Moon Knight was. His Jewishness was forgotten and his mental health became a joke.
Not to say all of them failed. There are a few shining stars that gleamed in the darkness and I like to think that it was these moments that kept Moon Knight going all these years.
Moench didn't set out to write a story about mental health, and yet his approach is the most real I've seen. Hardly a shining picture of perfect representation, there is still something there in watching the character almost seem to push back against the unintended desire to push him into a corner.
No matter how often Jake and Steven and Moon Knight were seen as Marc pretending to be someone else, there was always ALWAYS that correction. Always that push back.
Call it the writer's curse of characters misbehaving and taking on a life of their own, but perhaps there was something more there. Perhaps he felt the weight of time and cry of the suppressed and overlooked.
So many of his stories danced the line of "I can't say it because it will get edited out by the big wigs at Marvel, but if you would just look... Just look over here for just a moment..."
And years upon years later, a writer did see the whispers there and said "I see the story of pain. I see the cry of mental health." Lemire told the story that Moench couldn't and from that, we are still pushing forward with McKay.
And more, perhaps we will see the Jewish story that hides in all that also get a spotlight again.
In the era of big battles, cross-over events, explosions, and super villains cackling about domination... I still look back at Stained Glass Scarlet, The Druid, the Music Box, And Colloquy.
As I finish the original 1980s run, I brace myself to dive into what comes next.
I think I'm trying to find where and how the original run ventured so far into the dark and insulting territory it did and the journey back into a revival that now means so much to so many.
In a way, perhaps it mirrors a journey into our own mental health. How easy it is to become lost in what everyone around you tells you that you are and how you are supposed to be until your own doubt sets in to drown you. Perhaps it is the journey of Moon Knight's character emerging from this to find a path to healing that is what kept us here so long.

I'm watching Moon Knight (again) to help me go to sleep and I've rewatched episode 1 so so many times on nights like tonight but I still absolutely adore all the little details.
Like, okay so when Steven wakes up in the Alps (I think that's where it is), Khonshu says "go to sleep, worm" and okay, first watch and without knowing the context of Jake existing, that makes sense. Khonshu doesn't like Steven which we learn more and more as the series goes on but then he says a few lines later "the idiot's in control" in that same scene in the Alps.
There is such a clear shift in attitude between 'go to sleep, worm' and 'The idiot's in control' and it's so obvious on a rewatch that Khonshu is talking to two different people with each line.
He's referring to Jake as 'worm' and he thinks that telling him to simply 'go back to sleep' would work because Jake is aware of the alters and their situation. Although from the brief glimpses we get of Jake, we know that he is an... interesting guy yet we can gather that he at least has some sort of alliance/respect/something going on with Khonshu. However, when he realises it's Steven, it's not hostility in the same way. It's more exasperated frustration. He's mad at Marc for letting Steven suddenly appear rather than being annoyed at Jake for making a random appearance. The way that the dialogue is written just exposes so much on a rewatch.
But going back to Jake/Khonshu even if they do have some respect, it's also pretty obvious that Khonshu does not want Jake around. I'd speculate that that's probably because if Marc loses time when he knows that he's not in London as Steven, that would create suspicion. Suspicion that Khonshu wouldn't want because that would put their avatar/God relationship at risk.
Though, I also suspect that Khonshu and Jake probably were working together but Marc never became aware because Jake worked at nights (maybe why Steven is so goddamn tired) or simply took over while Marc thought that Steven was in control.
I know that the Moon Knight portrayal is not the most accurate DiD portrayal but from my research, there's this whole idea of like different levels of awareness. Like the blackouts for Steven are because he initially has no awareness of the other alters. Then when Steven and Marc black-out, it's because neither of them are aware that there is a third alter aka Jake. Which means that Jake can do things for Khonshu while Marc believes that he is in London and neither Marc nor Steven would be aware.
I'm kind of just rambling about the show at this point but also, what I find really interesting every time I rewatch is the date thing. So, right, if Marc was the one that set-up the date why would he let Steven stand her up without saying anything to her? Marc isn't exactly the best guy when it comes to romance but he is incredibly protective over Steven because he wants to protect him from Khonshu. So, why in the world would he let the whole date rejection thing happen?
Because it wasn't Marc. It was Jake. Jake asked out Steven's colleague and that also makes sense why they went to a steak place. Jake doesn't give a f*ck about Steven's veganism while Marc absolutely would. Marc wants to protect Steven so he wouldn't make such a silly mistake.
But Jake would. Honestly, at this point, convinced that Jake just wanted to fuck with the Moonboys and Khonshu just played along.
I don't know.
I always find the dynamics of the Moonboys so interesting and I love how even when you rewatch it, there are new little discoveries that you can make. Like there was so much love, thought and attention put into this show?? It makes me SO SO happy.
This show honestly means the world to me and excuse the ramble/rant but I just love talking about my Moonboys and I never really get to speculate or discuss the show. I talk about it with my dad but being at uni means that I do not get to ramble at him as often. So, tumblr gets it instead.
But yeah, they're my (not very) astute observations about my beloved Moon Knight

first post and its moon knight stim hcs??? first post and its moon knight stim hcs.
ive literally been spinning these in my head for wayyyy too long, theyre half based on the show and half straight up just my hcs which are based on some of my own stims and i needed to share them SO:
Steven
it is literally canon that steven fiddles with his hands and sleeves, doing things like wringing his hands back and forth and just generally having a lot of little hands stims (i literally have reblogged gifs of his hand stims before)
i think he also fiddles with and runs his hands over different things, like different fabrics, to feel the texture of it (which is partially canon due to the scene in the Duat where hes running his hand over the pile of towels)
he also rubs the bottom of his sleeves and his shirts in-between his fingers to feel it! idk i just think hes a very texture stim sort of guy i think he loves feeling textures
pressure stims!!!!! he literally has this recurring motion that he does in the show where he holds his hands to his chest and i think he likes pressing down in a sort of half-hug motion to himself! i also think he sort of rubs over his heart when he does this sometimes
FIDGET TOY KING!!!! LITERALLY CANON!!!!! I think he has just more than the rubiks cube, i feel like he has other sorts of stim puzzles, maybe a fidget cube, things like that (i also think he would get really attached to those articulated stim toys that look like animals)
he would probably also make a lot of stim toys out of different objects, if you give him pretty much any object he will find a way to stim with it somehow
i feel like he definitely rocks back and forth, but it isn't very intense a lot of the time? it is more of a gentle sway, but he does it very often, especially when hes just standing still waiting for something
absolutely 100% a hand flapper, specifically up and down because he doesn't like the way that his fingers hit each other when he flaps his hands left to right
Jake
SOUND STIMS SOUND STIMS i think jake is such a sound stims guy
hes definitely big on whistling and humming, and makes a lot of little clicking and popping sounds with his mouth
he clicks his fingers a lot as well and moves his hand around while he does it so that the sound hits his ears in different ways (like a bat yknow? echolocation and all that)
loves to crack his knuckles for the sound and the feel, but has to shake his hands out a bit afterwards usually because they feel weird sometimes
he definitely has a stim where he taps the backs of his one hand with his other hand when hes wearing his gloves, because he loves the sound that his gloves make tapping against each other
he used to have a stim where he would drag his toe across the ground in shoes to make his leg bounce but then he would have to buy new shoes cause the toes would wear out so he does it less now
instead he rubs his shoes, specifically the toes, back and forth on the ground, specifically if hes sitting down and happens to have both of his feet on the floor
CHEWS ON FUCKING EVERYTHING if it can be chewed on, even if it shouldnt be chewed on, i guarentee he is chewing on it. i mean pencils i mean pencaps i mean zipper pulls i mean Anything-
he usually tries to have something edible to chew on at all times with him, usually some sort of hard candy, and he also has a chewing necklace that he wears a lot at the flat, and sometimes under his jacket if he feels like he'll need it when hes out and about
Marc
i feel like marc has a lot more subtle stims (hello masking!), unless hes around people he trusts
he definitely has a chewing stim, but specifically softer things like fabric and soft chewing necklaces
he bites on the edges of his sleeves when he is at the flat, specifically when he is thinking, or blankets and pillows if hes overwhelmed
if he not at the flat he usually just grinds his teeth if he has the need to chew on something, he constantly has jaw aches because of it
he rubs his hands and his knuckles over his thighs a lot and taps his fingers on his legs
i definitely think he clenches his fists over and over again before stretching his hands out like he wants to flap his hands but is too tense, especially in public
when he starts to unmask more he definitely does a lot of hand flapping mixed in with gesturing as he talks
he also cracks his knuckles and his wrists out repeatedly both for the sound and the feeling of it, he does it a lot when hes out of the flat
he also has a stim where he rolls his shoulders back and stretches out his neck? he isn't quite sure if it really is a stim but he does it for the same reasons that he does all of his other stims so it counts
i also think he rocks up onto the balls of his feet a lot and back down, mixed with a bit of rocking? this feels like one that he only really does when hes comfortable with who hes with
JUMPING!!!!!! THIS IS LITERALLY CANON!!!! he jumps up and down and tucks his legs up when he does to get more height and i think that he does it when hes really excited about something

I know we don't have any confirmation on a Season 2 of Moon Knight but I still have one big fear: Jake Lockley.
Because I have seen the wonderful works and headcanons of the fandom and we all already have a picture of him in our heads when we make fanworks like fic and art and everything.
And I am a little scared of when (yes when not if - I am in denial shush) we get a second season how canon MCU Jake will 'live up to fanon Jake'.
Because (as many things in the MCU) we can't 100% look at the comics for any guidance (for the lack of a better word) because the MCU always did it's own thing to adapt to the current time and the different medium.
They (very well in my opinion) have done that with our favorite gift shoppist Steven. They made the suave billionaire playboy from the comics into the socially awkward sassy brit we love in the show.
So what of Jake?
We got an after credit scene with him. He says one line.
And he kills a guy.
I really don't want Jake to become the murder guy and I do trust both Mohamed Diab and Oscar Isaac not to go that route but there is still that lurking flicker of fear. Because they are not the only people working on that show. And it's Marvel. And Disney.
So yeah. I am not making a point here or anything. Just have this ramble I guess.
God I love Jake.

one thing I really like about Moon Knight (besides everything) is the very first scene of the very first episode.
I think it's fascinating that the show starts with an opening shot of (one of the) antagonists as opposed to the main character. Even though we as the viewers don’t know that we are seeing an antagonist yet. Besides that, it sets the mood brilliantly by being calm and sombre, yet just a little bit too weird. It looks like it’s going to be just a morning ritual or someone getting ready but it gets progressively worse and ends with someone putting glass shards in his sandals and walking off into the unknown. During it we also get a good look and hint at the scale tattoo or the crocodile cane without knowing their significance yet.
Plus, the shot of Harrow walking out of the building is simply beautiful

Okay I know I haven't been vocal in the Moon Knight fandom on this blog but- just-
The Moon Knight System x Spider-Man Reader
It sounds so unoriginal to me and yet I haven't found any fics about it and that is a CRIME.

Do you see it. Do you see my vision??
Tumblr media
Marc is Mr. Knight in the comics while Steven is Mr. Knight in the mcu, so imagine
Imagine Steven as a moon god, gained from killing Khonshu !! Idk i just think it would be cool
Hhh i wish Marvel releases a what if of this sort like, what were the circumstances for Marc and co to kill Khonshu? Were they alone after or were their loved ones by their side? HOW did they kill Khonshu?? Hhh i just really like this concept of an avatar killing their own patron
Also i just really like depressed badass Steven

Ok can we appreciate how HUGE it is that Marc not only got married but to a strong, independent woman like Layla?
That he got himself to a point where he can feel safe around her....and they put a ring on it! They committed!
I know Marc has a long way to grow and heal but can we also appreciate how far he's come?!
