Mako fucking adored Korra. He supported her and tried to be there for her every step of the way in Book 2 while they were dating. Most of the shit that happened in regards to their relationship was Korra’s fault. Now, was it understandable? Yes, because Korra was dealing with a hell of a lot of pressure, both personal and job-wise. Her home was in danger, her family was in danger, and no one seemed to be trying to really help her. Everyone loaded these impossible expectations on her, and she wasn’t able to rise to them. But any and all of the crap that went down happened after Mako broke up with Korra initially. Then ASAMI KISSED HIM (important: star this) during their whole drama fest. They never got back together (and Remembrances brought this up).
Honestly, if there’s one thing I absolutely hated about Remembrances, it was the absolute disregard for the MUTUAL screw-ups in the relationships and how BOTH TIMES Mako ‘cheated,’ the girl kissed him. He simply didn’t ‘fess up about the kiss (which is still a dick move, don’t get me wrong, and he should have to deal with it). Most of the crap that went down in the handling of the Makorra relationship was not Mako’s fault and was either instigated by Korra or outside forces. Not to say Mako is blameless (because he’s not, and there were a thousand ways he could have handled things better too), but jesus christ: Korra is not blameless in this whole mess. She is not some perfect paragon of virtue and wronged innocence. Neither is Asami, though I will freely admit Asami was basically innocent and largely a victim of the whole drama fest. Mako is not the only one to blame, and Mako is not his relationship issues. There is so much more to Mako than his romance, just as there is more to Korra than her romance. Especially considering Mako had the most character development of any character in the show save Korra and perhaps Lin. More on that here  (fantastic-nonsense . tumblr . com/post/103339454055/morgenstars-when-people-shit-on-mako-and-blame) and here fantastic-nonsense . tumblr . com/post/95766287285/ayasugi-san-fantastic-nonsense  .
Mako and Korra dated for six months before Book 2 started, and from everything we know they had a healthy, relatively stable relationship with each other. Like, did you people not watch “Rebel Spirit?” It was almost sickening how in love with each other they were; Bolin certainly thought so. That’s six months in. Any ‘honeymoon period’ had worn off. Mako and Korra’s romantic relationship in Book 2 disintegrated and failed to work because of conflicting responsibilities, their mutual immaturity, and their mutual hotheadedness. All of which were resolved by the end of Book 4 due to their independent character development that took place over the course of the last two books.
Anyway, onto the actual bulk of the ask, since I’ve gotten that off my chest.
You know what? Just because I freaking can, let’s count up all the Mako-Korra/Makorra interactions in Book 4, shall we?
Mako’s letters to Korra, which are honestly just as awkward as the boy himself is. No wonder Korra didn’t reply back to him, honestly; his letters sound like me when I’m valiantly attempting to be formal in an email.
“Reunions”: Five interactions, three directly related to Korra’s leave of absence (the initial reunion hug/conversation—interrupted by Wu, Mako getting upset over Korra replying to Asami but not him or Bolin—interrupted by Asami changing the subject to her father, and the “this is like old times for me and Korra” bit, followed by the look) and then two related to the Wu drama: their argument and subsequent apology (which actually shows how their independent character growth and time apart matured them to the point where any relationship they had, romantic or otherwise, would be healthy and functional; during Books 1 and 2, they would often get into arguments then stomp off and would not apologize to each other until much later, if ever)
“Remembrances”: while it didn’t include any direct Mako-Korra interaction, the episode spent ten minutes recapping the romance angle. Multiple times, it was implied or implicitly stated that Mako hadn’t gotten over Korra and was still in love with her, including the “I haven’t dated anyone since Korra and I broke up” line, the “she continues to inspire me” line, and quite frankly just the general awe with which he talks about her. Korra’s recap did not focus on the romance angle at all and instead was focused on the actual stuff that she’s done over the seasons, and so we did not get her thoughts one way or the other on the matter.
“Beyond the Wilds”: So I like to talk a lot of crap, but here’s where I put my money where my mouth is. This entire episode was dedicated to two things: the culmination of Korra’s recovery arc and the relationship between Mako and Korra. They were together nearly the entire episode. They fought together in the Spirit Wilds while looking for Jinora, Mako had his “I’m here for you. What do you need?” line, Mako was the one that went with Korra to visit Zaheer, Mako had “the concerned look” (I’m pretty sure he’s patented that look) on his face when Korra went in to face Zaheer alone, etc etc. Nearly the entire episode was direct Mako-Korra interaction except for the brief “Fire Ferrets” moment with Bolin, the brief moment with Tenzin being an overprotective father, and the culmination of Korra’s recovery arc, facilitated by Zaheer. And who was there during this culmination to support Korra? Not Asami. She had a grand total of two lines the entire episode, both of which were spoken to Varrick.
“Operation Beifong”: Honestly, this applies throughout the season, because it’s brought up multiple times: Mako being protective of Korra and being disgusted by the idea of Wu attempting to date her/verbally refusing to set Wu and Korra up. I will freely admit this could be and probably is non-romantic in nature; Mako is probably just feeling protective of someone he cares about deeply and is disgusted by the idea of someone like Wu trying to date her. But still, it bears talking about, especially considering it’s brought up multiple times.
Also applies to the season as a whole: Mako’s general verbal and emotional support for Korra, often directly.
“The Last Stand”: there is one direct interaction and one indirect interaction. The indirect interaction occurs while they are searching for Korra after she creates the Spirit Portal. The “camera” does a close-up on Mako’s disapointed and upset face when Jinora says she can’t find her. The “camera” chooses not to show Asami’s reaction. And then their final interaction at the wedding, the one where he says “I’ll follow you into battle no matter how crazy things get. I have your back, and always will.” Pan to Korra’s happy face with wide eyes.

Who supported Korra verbally and physically? Mako, not Asami. The only times we see Asami support Korra are the “I’m here to talk if you need me scene” and the tea scene in “Remembrances.” Who was there to support her during the culmination of her recovery arc and spiritual journey? Mako, not Asami. Which relationship did Remembrances focus on? The Asami-Mako-Korra relationship, not the Korra-Asami friendship/relationship. Who got an entire episode of essentially one-on-one time with Korra? Mako, not Asami. Who did the “camera” choose to focus on when they were searching for Korra? Mako, not Asami. Where was Asami? We don’t know. Not with Korra, by her side and supporting her like we would assume a FRIEND would do, not to mention a person who is going to be Korra’s future romantic interest. Who’s by her side? Mako.

Reading chain of gold but also knowing like the rest of the time line is so odd, because I’m like “wow, you know in about 60-70 years from now everything you guys stood for and respect will be completely disregarded by your decedents,” like how do we go from the amazing being that is Anna lightwood to Robert the slightly homophobic/hating downworlders/being in a murder club, man like Anna would woop his ass and yes I know she’s not technically his direct descendant but your telling me that she wasn’t involved in every single one of her cousin/friends/siblings children’s lives no she was the coolest of aunts
literally try to change my mind you can’t.
I will also be forever shocked that we went from Will James and lucie herondale to freaking Stephan herondale,
We like never meet another morgenstar other then valentine or at least not one I can remember but I bet there still better then his ass.
Like, if we look at family trees here’s the herondale one
Tumblr media
James herondale didn’t die until 1963 meaning yes Stephen was only alive for 3 over leaping years but his grandparent who had been raised by James and Cordelia lived until 1971 who had to have raised his child with similar ideals to that of his parents, like I just don’t understand, it’s not far enough detached that the family wouldn’t still have the same values.
This also might imply that the claves school it self teaches haterd towards downworlders and I cant prove for most of them lgbtq+ people’s but Robert and maryes were pretty um, homophobic so you can’t prove that all the circle wasn’t homophobic.
Except joslyn I refuse to believe that women was homophobic, she definitely thought downworlders were bad but I don’t think she was truely homophobic,
Maybe the kind of person who would say “but I have a gay friend” but I think she’s just mis guided

in your love, my salvation lies
part ii
Riley Matthews’ world is crumbling at her feet, and Maya Hart is doing the best she can stitch it back together (read on ao3, read part one)
Cory sits watching Auggie, without moving, without thinking. He wouldn’t be breathing if respiration required conscious thought. He is a shell, as empty as his wife downstairs.
It’s only when they come back upstairs, when Riley enters Auggie’s room alone, and Cory sees her tear stained face, and she rushes at him, burying her face in his chest, soaking his shirt, does he finally feel. And then he feels it all. And he hugs his daughter, Topanga’s daughter, desperately, and sobs.
They spend the rest of the day, and that night, in the hospital, cramped in the chairs by Auggie’s bed. Shawn, Katy, and Maya stay too, making sure Cory and Riley eat, and walk around every now and then. Shawn calls family, explaining what happened. The words ‘There was an accident, Auggie’s alive, but Topanga… Topanga died,’ never become easier to say, but they become a strange, hollow mantra, and each time he says them, he feels a little more dead.
Cory’s parents. Topanga’s parents. Eric. Feeny. Morgan. Josh. Jack. John.
He mentally ticks each one off as he calls them, pacing the hallway of the ICU.
Each phone call invites more people, and they come and go throughout the day, bringing flowers and condolences and gifts for Auggie. It’s a blur of people and hugs and sobs.
Maya runs her fingers through Riley’s hair, as they sit, a tangle of limbs, in the chair next to Auggie’s bed; she’s not sure what time it is, whether it’s day or night, hospitals are strange like that.
“He’ll be okay, Riles,” she murmurs into Riley’s ear.
Riley doesn’t look at her, her eyes fixed on Auggie. “You don’t know that.”
It’s the most depressing, hopeless thing Maya has ever heard Riley say.
Riley must’ve fallen asleep at some point, because she wakes up, still tangled with Maya in the chair, with a crick in her neck. She rubs it sleepily and groans. She slumps back in the chair, Maya’s breath now on her neck, as the pain of yesterday rush back to her. She wishes she could be asleep again.
She looks over at her father, who is quietly reading ‘Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban’ to Auggie.
“Dad,” Riley calls out quietly, and her father pauses, looking over at her, “could you read a bit louder please?” she asks him, and he smiles.
“Of course, honey,”
The briefest of smiles cross Riley’s face, as she shuts her eyes and snuggles into Maya, listening to her father read.
Shawn uses the next day to start organising the funeral, with the occasional help of various family. There’s a coffin to get, and a venue to source, a plot in a cemetery to find, and people to invite. He doesn’t leave the hospital though, getting other people to go out and visit the funeral parlours or coffins or cemeteries he’d found online.
“Shawn, honey,” Katy whispers, standing next to his chair, running her fingers through his hair. “You should sleep.”
Shawn shakes his head stubbornly. “I gotta do this, Kate, I can’t sleep, not when…” he doesn’t finish his sentence.
He doesn’t need to.
Maya calls Farkle during that day. She sits out in the hallway and murmurs the painful past hours to him. Auggie comatose. Topanga… Topanga…
She can’t say it, but he can tell from her crumbling voice.
“How’s Riley?” he asks.
Maya shakes her head, crying. “I… I don’t know. Not good.”
“I’ll tell the others,” Farkle says quietly, “would it be okay if we came by,”
“Yeah, I think Riley would like that.”
Farkle, Lucas, Zay, and Smackle all file into the hospital a couple of hours later. Riley’s face brightens ever so slightly at the sight of them, and she embraces them all.
“We’re really sorry, Riley,” Farkle says sincerely, and the others nod.
Tears fill Riley’s eyes again, and she nods. “Thank you for coming,”
“Of course,” Farkle says, reaching out and taking her hand, “of course.”
And Maya sees it in all four of them, the same thing she feels inside — the desire to fix it all, and the hopelessness at not being able to.
It’s also Maya who calls Ava. She finds her mother’s number on Riley’s phone and calls it.
“Hi, Mrs Morgenstar?” Maya says hesitantly, standing in the corner of Auggie’s room, her eyes on a sleeping Riley and Cory.
“It’s Ms Holland now,” Ava’s mother corrects her, “I’ve gone back to my maiden name,”
Maya really couldn’t care less. “Right, sorry, well I’m Maya, I’m a friend of the Matthews,”
“Yes, I think we’ve met before, and Ava’s spoken about you,”
“Um, I was just calling because…” her mouth is dry and she tries to speak but no words come out.
“Hello?”
“Auggie,” Maya manages to say. “There was an accident, and Auggie… Auggie’s in a coma. I thought you and Ava would like to know.” she can’t bring herself to tell her about Topanga.
Ms Holland is silent, stunned. “Yes, thank you,” she finally says. “what hospital?”
“Greenwich,”
“We’ll be there soon,” Ms Holland says, and then the line goes silent.
Maya lets her hand drop from her ear, and she stares at Riley, Cory, and Auggie, and she wishes to God she could fix it all, to help them like they’ve helped her over the years.
Ava doesn’t make a grand entrance, she doesn’t yell or shout, she doesn’t slam doors or do jazz hands. She enters meekly, clutching her mother’s hand. She peers up at Auggie, and carefully places a handmade card on his bed.
“I love you, Auggie Doggie Matthews,” she says quietly, “please get better,” she stands on the tips of her toes and kisses him on the cheek.
Riley must’ve fallen asleep again at some point, because next thing she knows doctors and nurses are rushing around the room, yelling at each other. Maya pulls her out of the chair, and they stand against the wall with Cory and the others.
“What’s going on?” Riley asks, terrified.
“I don’t know, I don’t know,” Maya shakes her head, tears falling down her cheeks.
“Dad, what’s happening?” Riley asks desperately, but her father doesn’t reply, he can’t form any words, he just stares helplessly at his son.
Auggie’s heart rate monitor flatlines, and Maya lets out a sob, folding into her mother. Riley watches as the doctors place a defibrillator on her eight year old brother, and his body jolts with each shock, but the heart rate monitor refuses to beep.
“Come on,” one of the doctors says angrily, “come on, kid,”
Another doctor places a hand on his shoulder and shakes her head gently, and he sighs, wiping his forehead.
“Time of death: 21:47,” he says.
Riley lets out the same raw scream as before.
“I’m sorry,” the doctor says turning to them, “I’m so sorry,”
Riley extracts herself from the grip of whoever is hugging her and runs.
She runs out of Auggie’s room and down the ICU hallway. She doesn’t bother the elevator and instead plunges up the fire escape stairs. She runs until her lungs hurt, until she finally bursts out onto the roof.
It’s the first time she’s been outside in over two days, and the cold air stings her skin; it’s a painful reminder that she’s alive.
She collapses into a pile of sobs, gasping in the harsh air; Maya appears behind her, pulling her into hug, clutching at her.
Riley grasps Maya desperately and sobs until she can longer breathe. Maya holds her, tears falling down her own face, stroking Riley’s hair.
“I’ve got you,” she whispers with each of Riley’s sobs. “I’ve got, I’ve got you, I’ve got you.”

Opinion on literature? Favourite authors and book(s)
The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstar (sp) is one of my favourites. I enjoy the old world whimsy of it all, magic has its rules but we never learn what it is. We have a fight that never lands a blow, a fight that’s very much physical but also incredibly aesthetic. The imagery you’ll find in this book is superb, truly it is. I highly recommend it.
Vellum and Ink: Books of All Hours. Volume 1 and 2 by Hal Duncan. There’s no praise I could give this book that wouldn’t fall short of how spectacular it truly is. If you enjoy warped mysteries and twisting plots, I highly recommend it. Not a book for the faint of heart of course, or those who can’t categorize multiple plot threads at a time. Or those who prefer not to be haunted by a piece of literature for the rest of their wretched lives.
