today being august, my sister spun the BNB book club wheel. i had just told her not three days ago that i was hoping to draw the straw in, like, march or april becauseΒ
i’ve spent the summer reading all of emily henry’s trove on my own
this is not the ideal audience for my typical historical fiction leanings
alix e. harrow’s new release is slated for october
i start my doctorate in september
β€˜23-’24 is my triennial eval at work
care to guess what happened? BUT. i found a book that seems delightful!

January Reading Wrap-Up
Despite working every weekday that wasn't a national holiday or had school cancelled due to weather, I had a really good reading month. I don't think I'll have another one like it until school lets out. πŸ₯΄ I'm always so exhausted when I get home.
I ended 2023 with a Heartstopper novella and it prompted a reread of the comics. Then a few of my audio holds came in. I think my favorite is a tie between Mrs. Nash's Ashes by Sarah Adler and A Power Unbound by Freya Marske. Both were incredibly good in different ways. I may eventually post reviews of both of them, but we shall see.

I don’t know what I expected fromΒ Mrs. Nash’s AshesΒ by Sarah Adler, but a whirlwind of tender emotions and immense heart in the form of a book I can’t put down wasn’t one of them. (Though there’s no surprise consideringΒ the world of romanceΒ with brilliant writers pouring their souls into these stories.) Still, this one is special. The novel is overflowing with wholesome junctures in every corner and the kind of love stories that’ll make the heart soar. It’s a rare treat with its intricate plot, pacing, and witty dialogue, bringing a stunning version ofΒ the grump and sunshine tropeΒ to life.
Mrs. Nash’s AshesΒ is a bit of a bonus with two love stories for the price of one, and while one tragically ends with heartbreak in the past, it’s still brimming with immense longing in a way that delivers what lasting adoration looks like. The story follows Millicent (Millie) Watts-Cohen traveling to Key West to reunite her elderly best friend’s ashes with the one true love of her life, the one that got awayβ€”Elsie. Travel plans go awry, and a road trip ensues, resulting in the use of every glorious trope fans of the genre could think of. Further, while readers experience Millie and Hollis’ story in real-time, we go through the events of the past through story recollections and letters, bringing Rose (Mrs. Nash) and Elsie’s romance to the forefront gorgeously.

9 Questions to know me better
tagged by @heartstringsduet. Thank you!
Last song: She's Got Bette Davis Eyes by Kim Carnes, which says possibly less about me and more about the radio station I listen to in the car, but I suppose that also says something about me.
Favourite Colour: blue-purples
Last film/show: All of Us Strangers (have mixed feelings about it, it was beautiful, the end did not work for me)
Sweet/savoury/spicy: Yes and Please and Thanks
Last thing I googled: honestly? who sings She's Got Bette Davis Eyes. Prior to that, I think three complimentary colors for a work presentation because I'm bad at making powerpoint give me colors that don't make my eyes bleed.
Last book: Mrs Nash's Ashes (cute, sex felt stilted - I'm spoiled by fanfic)
Relationship status: it's complicated?
Current obsessions: trying to find that Teen Wolf story with that one scene in it (still), trying to figure out how to turn 125 pages of a feasibility study into a 10 page presentation (work), making a quilt for a friend's wedding, my cats being adorable (as ever)

Rating: 5/5
Book Blurb: A clever con womanΒ must convince a skeptical, sexy farmer of his property's resident real-life ghost if she's to saveΒ them allΒ from a fate worse than death, in this delightful new novel from the author ofΒ Mrs. Nash's Ashes.
Fake spirit medium Gretchen Acorn is happy to help when her best (read: wealthiest) client hires her to investigate the unexplained phenomena preventing the sale of her bridge partner’s struggling goat farm. Gretchen may be a fraud, but she'd like to think she’s a beneficentone. So if "cleansing" the property will help a nice old man finally retire and put some much-needed cash in her pockets at the same time, who's she to say no?
Of course, it turns out said bridge partner isn't the kindly AARP member Gretchen imaginedβ€”Charlie Waybill is young, hot as hell, andΒ extremelyΒ unconvinced that Gretchen can communicate with the dead. (Which, fair.) Except, to her surprise, Gretchen finds herself face-to-face with Everett: the very real, very chatty ghost that’s been wreaking havoc during every open house. And he wantsΒ herΒ to help ensure Charlie avoids the same family curse that's had Everett haunting Gilded Creek since the 1920s.
Now, Gretchen has one month to convince Charlie he can’t sell the property. Unfortunately, hard work and honesty seem to be the way to win over the stubborn farmerβ€”not exactly Gretchen's strengths. But trust isn’t the only thing growing between them, and the risk of losing Charlie to the spirit realm looms over Gretchen almost as annoyingly as Everett himself. To save the goat farm, its friendly phantom, and the man she's beginning to love, Gretchen will need to pull off the greatest con of her life: being fully, genuinely herself.
Review:
A con artist who makes her living as a fake medium finds herself in over her head when she begins seeing an actual ghost and now has to help him break the curse on his family... except said family member is a hot grumpy farmer who sees right through her and wants her off his farm. Gretchen Acorn is a fake spirit medium and has become one of the best at her job. She has only one rule though: to leave her clients better off than when she met them, thats so she can be different from her father, a horrible con man, Gretchen might take money from people but she's adamant that they're happier when she's done. Gretchen isn't a bad person, but she's not exactly a good one. When Gretchen's client pays her to help a friend she can't help but say yes, what was suppose to be an easy pay day is ruined when she finds out that Charlie Waybill, the friend she was suppose to help isn't an old man on a farm but rather a very hot farmer who is unconvinced Gretchen can communicate with the dead. Yet Gretchen is in for the surprise of her life when she actually begins seeing a ghost, this time the con isn't fake and she is really communicating with a ghost. The ghost is related to Charlie's family and tells Gretchen that she has to help him break the curse on their family and to save Charlie. How can she save Charlie when he wants nothing more for her to get away as far as possible. Now Gretchen has to find a way to convince Charlie that the curse is very real and that she can actually communicate with him. Gretchen won't leave so Charlie offers her a deal: she'll work on the farm for a few months in exchange for room and board, that'll give her enough time to try and save Charlie. Yet the more time they spend together the more the feelings between them begin to grow. Gretchen is about to face her biggest challenge yet: being her true self and possibly opening her heart up. Can she break the curse before it's too late? This was such a cute and cozy autumnal/spooky romance vibe book. I love a fun con artist story with a touch of ghost. Charlie and Gretchen were really cute, despite how much they thought they were different, they had so much in common and cared so much about each other. This was a really cute feel good read and I had fun with it!
*Thanks Netgalley and Berkley Publishing Group,Β Berkley for sending me an arc in exchange for an honest review*

Backstory: Born in Jamaica and coming to C.R.C for training at the age of 20 in 1996. Mike Mann is a foolish man who believes some things in life are owed to him, like Kirby's hand in marriage, so he fakes like he's happy being her friend and never being allowed to do more than kiss her as a celebration of tough fought victories. Mike is the first person of his family to become a wrestler, falling head over heels in love with Kirby (a woman who does not want a relationship with him, ever) in the process.
Trivia:
Mike has known Kirby since she was 10 (He was 25 at the time they met).
Mike has purposefully stayed single in the hopes of one day dating Kirby.
He let Kirby move in with him, hoping it would lead to a relationship.
The night Mike kicked Kirby out, he was going to confess his love to her.

Tagged by @hondagirll for this throwback of a meme.
Last song: I Love You's by Hailee Steinfeld
Currently watching: Brothers & Sisters, because apparently I'm on a "watch the mid-2000s dramas I missed" kick (I just finished Big Love, and before that Felicity, although the latter is obvs late 90s/early 00s) (on that note: I am taking recommendations for finished series, since I'm guessing I'm gonna need a backlog).
Currently reading:Β Juggling Begin Again by Emma Lord and Mrs. Nash's Ashes by Sarah Adler.
Current obsession: The History Channel's History This Week podcast, because apparently I'm also back in my history major era.

I managed to reach the halfway point for my 2023 reading goal of 150. Favorites this month were Mrs. Nash’s Ashes and Choosing Theo, which I didn’t expect to like so much because I thought it would be another IPB clone and I actually liked it way more than IPB. Happy Medium by Sarah Adler
Tumblr media
Thank you to Net Galley and Berkley Publishing for an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Con artist Gretchen is a fake spirit medium who lives by one rule as her moral compass: She only takes on a client if she can leave them better off than when she met them. When her best client offers her $10,000 to help her bridge partner cleanse his presumably haunted goat farm so he can sell it, she can't really say no. Gretchen is surprised on her arrival that Charles "Charlie" Waybill, the bridge partner, is actually an attractive man around her age how does not believe in the supernatural whatsoever. After he kicks her out, Gretchen is even more shocked to learn that there actually is a cursed ghost haunting the farm and only she can see him. Gretchen has one month to convince Charlie not to sell the farm, or else he will meet the same cursed fate.
I was so excited for this book. The plot sounded like fun and I loved the cover. I was even more excited when I learned that it was written by Sarah Adler, who wrote one of my favorite books from last year- "Mrs. Nash's Ashes." I was hoping that this book would be just as good and it didn't disappoint.
I usually don't love morally gray characters, at least not in my romances, so I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed the character of Gretchen. She does bad things, but she tries to not actually hurt anyone. I found myself buying into her rule and appreciating that she grappled with what she was doing. It made her journey more interesting and you appreciate where she ends up in the end.
The author has said that this book was partly inspired by flipping the relationships in the movie Ghost and I definitely felt it while reading. Gretchen is Whoopi Goldberg's character, the fake psychic medium who suddenly can talk to a ghost and has to convince someone that they're not lying this time. Instead of reconnecting lovers, the medium in this one falls in love with the one who is still alive. It was a fun take on it and I think it worked really well. I also got hints of Meg Cabot's "The Mediator" series with the way that the medium interacted with the often annoying ghost.
I also enjoyed the goat farm aspects of the book. It's not a setting that I've read before and was a good vehicle for putting things into perspective for Gretchen.
I liked the male lead Charlie. He took a while to listen to Charlie but his skepticism felt very believable. Wouldn't most of us not believe a woman claiming to be a psychic? He was clear with his intentions and expectations and communicated pretty well. I'm a sucker for good guys in books and he definitely was one.
Sarah Adler is a wonderful writer. I love her use of imagery and her wide variety of references to other media. I trust any book that she writes in the future.

Who knew April was going to have so many great romance releases? I surely did not! It was kind of tough to pick out only five but here goes. My Top 5 book I am most anticipating reading when they come out next month. #5 BOOK RELEASE This is the first book in a series that’s spinning off from the Rock Chick series which is one of my faves by this author. I’m waiting on pins and needles and have already purchased this book. Yay! Synopsis: Rachel Armstrong has a burning need to right the world’s wrongs. Thus, she becomes the Avenging Angel. And maybe she’s a bit too cocky about it. While riding a hunch about the identity of a kidnapper, she runs into Julien β€œCap” Jackson, who was trained by the team at Nightingale Investigations in Denver. Now he’s a full-fledged member at their newly opened Phoenix branch. It takes Cap a beat to realize Raye’s the woman for him. It takes Raye a little longer (but just a little) to figure out how she feels about Cap. As Raye introduces Cap to her crazy posse of found family and his new home in the Valley of the Sun, Cap struggles with his protective streak. Because Raye has no intention to stop doing what she can to save the world. But there’s a mysterious entity out there who has discovered what Raye is up to, and they’ve become very interested. Not to mention, women are going missing in Phoenix, and it seems like the police aren’t taking it seriously. Raye believes someone should. So she recruits her best friend Luna, and between making coffees, mixing cocktails, planning parties and enduring family interventions (along with reunions), the Avenging Angels unite to ride to the rescue. Click this link to purchase this book!* Avenging Angel #4 BOOK RELEASE I really enjoyed this author’s previous novel Mrs. Nash’s Ashes. It was quirky and humorous and I’m hoping for a similar feel with this very different sounding novel. You read this synopsis and tell me that it doesn’t make you curious? Synopsis: Fake spirit medium Gretchen Acorn is happy to help when her best (read: wealthiest) client hires her to investigate the unexplained phenomena preventing the sale of her bridge partner’s struggling goat farm. Gretchen may be a fraud, but she’d like to think she’s a beneficentone. So if β€œcleansing” the property will help a nice old man finally retire and put some much-needed cash in her pockets at the same time, who’s she to say no?Of course, it turns out said bridge partner isn’t the kindly AARP member Gretchen imaginedβ€”Charlie Waybill is young, hot as hell, andΒ extremelyΒ unconvinced that Gretchen can communicate with the dead. (Which, fair.) Except, to her surprise, Gretchen finds herself face-to-face with Everett: the very real, very chatty ghost that’s been wreaking havoc during every open house. And he wantsΒ herΒ to help ensure Charlie avoids the same family curse that’s had Everett haunting Gilded Creek since the 1920s.Now, Gretchen has one month to convince Charlie he can’t sell the property. Unfortunately, hard work and honesty seem to be the way to win over the stubborn farmerβ€”not exactly Gretchen’s strengths. But trust isn’t the only thing growing between them, and the risk of losing Charlie to the spirit realm looms over Gretchen almost as annoyingly as Everett himself. To save the goat farm, its friendly phantom, and the man she’s beginning to love, Gretchen will need to pull off the greatest con of her life: being fully, genuinely herself. Click this link to purchase this book!* Happy Medium #3 BOOK RELEASE The Cheat Sheet and Practice Makes Perfect were both great, so who wouldn’t want to try out Sarah Adams newest book release? I will be first in line! Synopsis: Nora Mackenzie’s entire career lies in the hands of famous NFL tight end Derek Pender, who also happens to be her extremely hot college ex-boyfriend. Nora didn’t end things as gracefully as she could have back then, and now it has come back to haunt her. Derek is her first client as an official full-time sports agent and he’s holding a grudge...

Most Anticipated Books of 2024 πŸ“š
This Disaster Loves You by Richard Roper - Richard Roper has now written two of my all-time favorites so his next book is at the top of my list for 2024. It comes out in February so not too much longer to go! I’m going to be freaking out over this for many days, I expect.
Just for the Summer by Abby Jimenez - Part of Your World is my favorite romance ever and Yours Truly is close behind, so I have high hopes for this one. I’ve tempered them slightly because I hated The Friend Zone, but that one was her first so at least she seems to be improving.
The Last Song of Penelope by Claire North - Both Ithaca and House of Odysseus nearly made my best books of 2023 list and I am DYING for the next book. The way book two ended?! Omg kill me. But please don’t kill Kenamon because I love him thx.
Expiration Dates by Rebecca Serle - Rebecca Serle has a unique ability to make me a specific kind of sad and uncomfy and for some reason I long for it. I’m pretty sure this will give me that feeling and I’m ready to have my soul ripped apart.
The Wedding Wish by Erin Sterling - Erin Sterling/Rachel Hawkins is one of my favorite authors. I love her humor and her romances. This series in particular has been so cozy and fun. It reminds me of the YA paranormal romances I loved in college but now for grown ups. I was so sad that this didn’t come out this year as originally planned but hopefully it doesn’t get delayed again.
Funny Story by Emily Henry - Of course I’m anticipating the new Emily Henry. Who isn’t?
Happy Medium by Sarah Adler - I really liked Mrs. Nash’s Ashes this year so I’m excited for her next book. It sounds like it may be a bit spooky too, which I’m hyped for. This cover is absolutely adorable as well.

It's Fic Posting-Eve! Leave out imaginary milk and cookies for your local, very tired writer.
Would anyone like a teaser?
(I don't do this for the whole fic, but I highly recommend listening to Spirit in the Sky by Norman Greenbaum for this section)
Dead Doggies Aren’t Much Fun
Cycle One
A few months after the warehouse shooting, the robbers are put to rest.
β€˜Mr. Brown’ enjoyed many things in life, none more so than his cars. Cherished rides went to some of his most trusted friends, and members of the club he went to every month made up most of the attendees at his funeral. Other classic car enthusiasts made the long procession from funeral home to grave site, and stood by his weepy Mama as she watched her son be lowered six feet under.
In another city, on this same day, β€˜Mr. Pink’ is getting the β€˜fast food’ treatment; a tiny funeral home with viewings by the hour, fast and cheap catharsis for those that bother to show. Pink insisted on being all-business in life, putting as little of himself out there for others to get to know. Turns out, this extended to his personal life, too. No friends, work colleagues, family members, not even a greedy distant cousin. In and out of the viewing room, cardboard lining containing his body lifted out of the casket, and carried off to be cremated. A few days later, his ashes will be ready, unclaimed.
By far, β€˜Mr. Blue’s funeral is the most fun. He lived a fast life, knew it could be over at any moment, and made plans amongst his friends, years before. Everyone’s on their best behavior at the closed-casket viewing, in front of funeral home employees. Then later, at the wake, back at Blue’s apartment, everyone relaxes. Dozens of people in the cramped space, several kinds of alcohol served, from cheap shit to top shelf, substances of every kind imaginable are passed around, from uppers to downers and everything in-between. Stories are told, followed by uncontrollable laughter in response to things that weren’t really funny at all. Two days later, the attendees of the wake will have little to no recollection of their time at the apartment, but will still feel satisfied.
Joe Cabot and his son, Eddie, are buried side-by-side. Father is laid to rest in a three piece Italian suit, and son in his favorite tracksuit. The only one more lavishly dressed than the deceased is Joe’s young widow, Theresa. Decked out head-to-toe in luxury brands, all black for taste, she hugs her fur coat closer around her middle. She’s practically baking in the summer heat, but it’s the one that Joe got for her birthday, and she wanted to wear it for him, at least once. Mascara runs down her face as everyone around her is convinced she must be faking it, but Theresa ignores the onlookers; broken hearts don’t care about anything but what they’ve lost.
Marvin Nash has a closed casket funeral. His widow and son sit up front, joined by her and Marvin’s parents. The LAPD has generously agreed to pay for his funeral, the casket, the plot, everything. It’s the least they can do, after all, for letting him die. His widow can’t stand the idea of remaining in the city, plans on moving back in with her parents on the other side of the country. She even wanted Marvin cremated, so she’d have no ties here, no reason to come back, but his parents insisted that their son would want to stay in his hometown. With much regret, and even more courage, she agrees, mentally preparing herself to create a physical distance of thousands of miles between herself and her Marvin.
Vincent Vega enters the funeral home, Mia on his arm. It’s eerily quiet, despite the place being packed. Row after row is filled with people Vincent doesn’t recognize, knows he’s never met in his life. Eyes follow the pair all the way up to the front, where a space is reserved for the two of them.
After thirty minutes of awkward silence, the funeral director kindly asks if anyone has anything to say. Standing up, smoothing out his suit, Vincent goes to the podium, already sweating. He tries focusing in on Mia, who’s beaming despite the morbid setting, β€œEr, thank you all for coming here, today. I’m sure Vic would appreciate your presence.” he can’t help looking behind him to his aforementioned brother, lying in the open casket. β€œUh, Vic-” he fumbles for the note in his breast pocket, β€œ-was a wonderful brother.” the rest of the paper is blank, β€˜Shit.’ β€œVery driven.” He could be quite lazy, β€œKnew what he wanted.” Vic went along with what people said, most of the time, but was impulsive, as well. β€œCared about his friends.” Vincent nods to random people in the crowd, hoping one of them showed up. β€œWas his own man.” Vic did anything Eddie Cabot asked of him, and was the only person that could tell Vic Vega what to do. β€œAnd I’ll miss him very much.” β€˜I can’t wait to see what’s in his will.’
