How I found out I was pregnant 💙

It all began as little joke at my cousins wedding on the 24th September, we was having a few drinks, talking a load of rubbish and pregnancy came up, he asked if I was, I said “I don’t know I think I need to do one lol” we laughed and didn’t think much about it, the night went on, enjoyed every moment. The next day my partner was coming to see me and I just randomly said to him “could you get a pregnancy test please” guys being guys, he was asking loads of questions and was worrying a bit, I said “I’m probably not but just want to do one”. So after a few hours he came by but wasn’t sure what he needed to buy lol, so my mum took us to the local pharmacy so I could get one, this is now the 25th September (by the way, I tell my mum everything and she is amazing with anything I tell her). We got the test and I started to feel a bit nervous. (Also I didn’t notice that my period was late, normally my period is before my mum but none of us noticed anything different) so, we get home, I do the test, the lines came up straight away, my partner and mum was stood outside waiting, I walked out and said, “your going to be a dad and your going to be a nan” my mum just looked at me and laughed, I said “no really, your going to be a dad and nan!” My partner was in so much shock that we didn’t actually talk lol, my mum was over the moon and congratulated us both. Now, me and my partner only got together in may 2021 so obviously I could understand he would be shocked and not want to talk because we found out we are having a baby, it took me a little while to realise that we are pregnant, it’s always been my dream to become a mummy, but I didn’t think it would be this soon lol. I did about 5 test to make sure I was as I couldn’t believe I was actually pregnant! Did a referral for the midwife, waited a few weeks for that to come through, they did a early scan as we couldn’t work out when my last period was. Went for the scan and I was measuring at that time 6 ish weeks, so very early. When me and my partner saw our baby on the screen, everything changed and it was all so real!

I am CJ, 24 years old, married with 2 step sons and I have a little girl on the way. I am currently 22w5d pregnant and due 18th December 2020 after struggling to conceive and undergoing fertility investigations since January 2020 it came as a surprise on April 8th when we finally got a positive pregnancy test, just 2 weeks after recieving a letter to say my investigations had to be put on hold due to covid-19. She really is the most amazing, unexpected little bean anyone could wish for 💖

The last few weeks of pregnancy

As I write this I am 40 weeks and 2 days, over the past few weeks I have felt tried, uncomfortable and impatient; I then start to feel strangely guilty for feeling this way! I am beyond ready to meet my baby, this is my first and I am so excited to meet my little bundle of joy. I can’t wait to see if it’s a boy or girl or who he/she will look like and I am dying for cuddle.

I was so convinced I was going to go early. I know full term is considered week 37 to week 42 but I had it in my head that I would go sooner rather than later, it turns out my baby has planned on the later side of things.

My tips for the last few weeks of pregnancy:

Relax

Get as much rest as possible, our bodies need to have energy to go through the birthing process. So, light some candles, put on some music (or in my case some positive birth affirmations), run a warm bath, lie back and enjoy the peace and quiet.

Pamper yourself

I used the last week before my due date to get my hair and nails done, I figure I won’t have a lot of time when baby comes to get my greys covered, so why not make the most of it while I still can.

Sleep

I know this is difficult and is something I am majorly struggling with, so I have taken to napping. I find it easier to nap for short periods of time rather than trying to get a full night’s sleep.

Practice for birth

I am practicing hypnobirthing, I have completed an online course and have attended some face to face classes at my hospital. I try and take 10-15 minutes every day to practice my breathing techniques, listen to deep relaxation, listen to positive birth affirmations or watch or read positive birth stories.

Be active

You might think this clashes with relaxing but keeping active can help to build energy levels. I have been trying to go for walks as much as possible, whether this be around the local park or just the 20-minute walk up to the shop and back. As well as this, I usually spend some time every evening bouncing on my birth ball in front of the TV.

Nesting

If you feel like nesting, then go for it. I went through a burst of organising everything, wardrobes, kitchen cupboards etc. I will admit that now at 40 weeks, this phase has ended, I don’t feel capable of scrubbing or cleaning anything!

Stay positive

Be prepared for constant questions, phone calls and texts from friends and family to ask if baby is here yet or if there is any movement. Try not to get too annoyed, which trust me, I know can be difficult. Everyone else is just as excited to meet your baby as you are. I have created a WhatsApp group for close family and have told them that once there is any news I would let them know, in the hope that they stop asking so much.

Induce labour naturally- ‘old wives tales’

The list of things to do at home seems to be endless: go for a walk, bounce on birth balls, do squats, have sex, walk up and downstairs, eat pineapple, have spicy food, drink raspberry leaf tea, use clary sage oil... there is more and trust me I have tried them all. Nothing has worked. I am now firmly in the mindset that ‘baby will come when baby is ready’ (make sure to check with your midwife before trying anything).

If you are in the last few weeks of your pregnancy, I feel your pain. Just try and stay positive and preoccupied.

My final tip- plan to do something nice on your due date to take your mind off the fact that you haven’t yet got your baby to cuddle. My cousin took me out for a lovely lunch and it really was a blessing to have something nice to do.
