"Okra had reached the Americas by 1658, when its existence was first recorded in Brazil" is one of those claims that everyone loves to repeat everywhere, from Wikipedia to accredited universities' agriculture divisions (such as U of Arkansas and U of Texas)--

--but no one wants to tell you where the fuck they got this information from.

because apparently I have to do everything myself, I have solved the mystery using nothing more than this information. the reference is in a Latin text by Dutch naturalist Willem Piso (Gulielmi Pisonis medici Amstelædamensis De Indiæ utriusque re naturali et medica libri quatuordecim, quorum contenta pagina sequens exhibet. Amsterdam: 1658. pp. 209-11)

the text contains descriptions and illustrations of two plants called "quigambo" which I believe, from their described properties and distributions, to be muskmallow (Hibiscus abelmoschus L.) and something resembling modern burgundy okra (Abelmoschus esculentus)*; he says that the latter exists in Brazil. (the no-longer-current "Hibiscus esculentus" wouldn't be used for okra until 1753).

*tbh it sort of sounds like Abelmoschus caillei (red stem and red veins on underside of leaves; very over-sweet when mature), but there is no record of that outside of Africa...

In no particular order:

Glossier You: ambrox, muskmallow, pink pepper, iris

This is my everyday perfume and one I get a lot of compliments on. I used to wear mostly white florals, but this spoke to my soul. It's so clean and fresh, but in a bubble bath way, not a citrus way, which I hate.

Chanel Gabrielle Essence: bergamot, jasmine, tuberose, gardenia, musk, sandalwood

The slighty elevated go-to perfume. If You is for the grocery store or a coffee run, I wear this to brunch or with a blazer and heels. Definitely my favorite white floral perfume. Also my gf's favorite on me :)

Guerlain Shalimar: incense, civet, powder, vanilla, tonka, rose

This is the most polarizing scent I own. My mom said it smells like a hooker nursing home, which I personally love, but you know. It was created as an evening scent in the 20s and it shows. I don't wear this often as a courtesy to others, but I love it.

Dior Poison Girl: damask rose, orange blossom, almond, heliotrope, vanilla, cashmere

I don't usually like super sweet scents because they lean too fruity, but this is my sex perfume. It's like scent lingerie and my date night fragrance most of the time. Really the perfect sweet fragrance if you don't like fruity florals or gourmands.

Kenzo Flower: violet, jasmine, Bulgarian rose, hawthorn, jasmine, white musk, myrrh

This is a super powdery, vintage smelling fragrance that's an easy grab for me when I don't know what to wear. It smells old fashioned but in a youthful way? This is for people who want to wear baby powder scent very elegantly.

Megachile pugnata - the pugnacious leafcutter bee, on Malva moschata. A new feature for Bee Safari! And...those mandibles, oh my...a large leafcutter, but not as large as Megachile pluto (worth looking up). Not particularly pugnacious in my observations, but not to say she isn’t. For me she just gleefully rolled around in the Malva pollen (look closely) as most any bee would. Notes: galbanum, oakmoss, leather, artemisia

This is a classical chypre, lots of galbanum and oakmoss, super sharp and bright, yellow-green, with lots of complexity.  I’ve been looking for a sharp green scent and this is a viable candidate to actually buy, if the sample I ordered works out.

Fleur de Lalita

Notes: rose, magnolia, lily, galbanum, ylang-ylang, muskmallow, vanilla, sandalwood, tonka bean, ambergris.

This is incredibly good. It’s a big, bloomy, swoony, garden-like white floral, with just a touch of green. LILY and MAGNOLIA for dayyyys. This is my jam.
