Ranger Academy: The First Arc
Tumblr media
So! Ranger Academy has given us four issues, and as we're getting a break next month, these four issues are clearly meant to be seen as the first arc or chapter of the story. While I didn't really expect to give this series most of my attention, apparently I do have a lot to say about it, so let's discuss these four issues and my thoughts on the series so far.
Ranger Academy's kind of in a weird place, at least from my experience. As far as I'm aware, there's really not much discussion or hype for it in the fandom? Which, in some way, makes sense - the series is completely disconnected from the main series and from the beginning was stated to be skewed more towards younger readers; almost as an introduction to Power Rangers as a whole. And it does that job well......for the most part.
Tumblr media
Before I get to the writing though, I just want to take a minute to highlight the art, since I don't talk about it enough in my recaps/other discussions. It's great! Drawn by Jo Mi-Gyeong and colored by Fabiana Mascolo, the art for the PR comics in general continues to be a high point. Every character, even the background teachers, have a distinct memorable design with a lot of personality in their poses and gestures, and the numerous settings we've already gotten - Sage's moon home, Ranger Academy's different campuses, the planet Chromia - all look fantastic. My only nitpicks would be I wish we got more non-humanoid cadets, and sometimes the way faces are drawn in profile look a little odd - especially when they have their mouths open - but those are nitpicks.
When it comes to the writing, things get a little trickier. For the most part, I think the story is good. The basic premise to all this in case you're new: a young girl named Sage lives on a remote moon with only her adopted father Rhianth and a herd of weird goat-like creatures. One day two cadets from the titular Ranger Academy, Mathis and Tula, crash-land on the moon and tell her about the Academy. Sick of living alone under her father's rules and wanting adventure, Sage stows along with them on their return journey and becomes an official student. So now instead of herding goats, she's making new friends, discovering secrets of the Academy, how her father connects to all this, and becoming a Power Ranger.
As I said, I think this is a solid premise for Boom's first ever completely original Power Rangers book (I count Power Rangers Universe as a sort of test-run for original stories, but that was still pretty connected to the main series and using established canon concepts.) The mysteries they've introduced, such as the lost Green campus, the implication that certain Ranger colors were purposefully erased from history, Rhianth's past, and Tula's interest in these secrets, all help build on the somewhat basic premise and are slowly giving the book its own identity. Sage herself is a very likable and relatable protagonist; a kid wanting more out of her lonely, isolated life so she takes the first opportunity she can to escape, but is now realizing that it's not going to be some fun adventure. The supporting cast is a little underdeveloped, but everyone's perfectly likable and I'm interested in seeing how they grow. I think for me there are two main problems that drag the book down: the setting itself being underdeveloped and the Ranger alumni cameos.
Ranger Academy itself? Meh
A criticism that immediately came out following the book's release, that I agree with for the most part, is the book pretty much follows the structure of a "magic school" story to a T. A "normal" kid who wants more out of life gets thrust into this new world by some kind of outside force. The school has a category system where kids get put into select campuses based on personality or skills. The main character doesn't fit in with everyone else until they find some friends to take care of them. There are secrets about the school that are being kept from the students, and secrets of the main character's family being hidden from them. Also, there's a bully.
Tumblr media
During my first read of the issues, I agreed that this was a detriment to the book, but now rereading it again, I think the problem is less that the book follows these tropes and more that it speeds through these tropes REALLY QUICKLY. You can tell they want to move things along to the good stuff where Sage morphs, and I understand why - this is a Power Rangers book, and people want to see Power Rangers. But at the same time, you really don't get much of a chance to get to know the school outside of its basic layout of its campuses and that the headmaster is literally a giant floating head. You don't learn any of the non-cameo teachers' names, outside of the librarian, and that's mostly because he was part of Rhianth's old friend group. You see some of the classes Sage has to take, but there's no discussion on if each color campus focuses on a particular subject. We establish that first years are on a rotation schedule of attending classes in a different color campus each day, but what's the difference between classes in the Blue Campus and classes in the Pink?
Now this might seem trivial, and it kind of is. It does help the reader feel Sage's overwhelming new situation by not giving her, and therefore the reader, the full picture. And there's nothing saying that these concepts won't get developed down the road. Sage has three and a half years left of school, after all, assuming the book continues long enough to cover that length of time. But when it comes to these kinds of stories, the school's operation is a huge part of the charm - what makes THIS magic school stand out against all the others on the YA shelf? You basically have to turn the school itself into a character. Hogwarts is so iconic because that series does this perfectly. Ranger Academy simply doesn't have that yet - it still just feels like a generic school, really an army training camp more than anything due to the hostage negotiation and survival classes she takes, with nothing to make it stand out except for the promise that we'll get to actual Power Rangers stuff soon.
Oh, and.....the cameos.
The Cameos
So.....yeah. This is a big one for me. I think there's time for the series to fix my issue of the school itself feeling underdeveloped, but it's already too late for the cameos
Tumblr media
Back when Ranger Academy was first being advertised, they were quick to show off that the book could cameo any ranger at any point in the franchise - the book itself accomplishes this through the Rangers using tubes as a sort of interplanetary, interdimensional Zoom........or just kind of.....showing up, as is the case with Cruger, Yale, and Katie. (I don't really know what constitutes a cameo physically being there as opposed to a tube hologram. It's another thing the book hasn't explained the rules for yet.) And for the most part, this is a fine idea. It makes sense, and fun for the simple novelty of "look!! it's my blorbo!!!" that no one is immune to.
But they get more and more out of place as the story of Ranger Academy starts to pick up.
Like I said before, the book is starting to hint that the school only having five colors isn't COMPLETELY MMPR pandering - the school is, indeed, intentionally erasing certain Ranger colors from their students' awareness. As someone who would love for the big twist to be this school and its system is inherently corrupt, this is a good start.
Tumblr media
HOWEVER. In order to make this work, you have to assume that a) the Ranger histories that the students learn about just don't mention ANY rangers that aren't red, blue, black, pink, or yellow and b) the Ranger alumni who teach there don't mention them either. And that's just too much for me to believe, I'm sorry. For some colors like orange and white, maybe, but gold? Silver? GREEN???????? There are too many of those guys to believe they can get covered up. And I really don't see the ranger alumni being okay with erasing their teammates from history. Green is the third-highest ranking at SPD. Hello? SPD? I think these guys would have heard of SPD? Since Cruger teaches there? (And if not at school then certainly once they're out and traveling the galaxy.)
I've mentioned before that the cameos are starting to feel more like a higher-up mandate than something the author chose to do, and that'll only be supported by a lack of explanation as to how this works with the narrative they're weaving AND if none of the cameo rangers actually.......play a real part in all this. Not that I want the canon characters to overshadow the new characters, but it would feel like kind of a letdown to have access to ALL of these characters and not give them anything to do besides generic exposition (there's really nothing specific to their characters in.....ANY of the cameos' dialogue, besides the five hundredth "uh, is that a CAT???????" joke with Yale.) or not take the chance to develop some of them by, say, assigning them a mentorship role to a specific student. I LOVE seeing Katie, after BOOM kind of ignores her in favor of Jen, but is all she going to amount to is being their bus driver? I didn't even realize it was her until people pointed out that they called her Professor Walker. Nothing about her suggested that she was Katie. So I worry about the aforementioned "it's my blorbo" novelty to wear out pretty fast if the cameos start to feel more and more like just fanservice for people to post about online.
But overall.....it's fine. I'm going to keep reading, and we'll see where this goes. I don't think everyone will like this - as seen by how I barely see anyone talking about it lol. But I'm cautiously optimistic now that we're getting into the meat of things with Sage's new, FORBIDDEN!!!!!!!!! color.
Tumblr media
(Just don't bring in Dark Specter oh god please)
Misc Thoughts:
= For all the build-up that the First Trial would be this HORRIBLE LIFE-THREATENING OH GOD HELP ME event, it was actually pretty...lowkey. They literally had no trouble until someone broke their ankle, which....could happen anywhere, at any time. Fern did that, you ain't special. We didn't even see any of those cool monsters they kept bringing up
= So after all my confusion about when and where this series is set, going back in my reread helped me notice that there IS a clue towards setting in a scene where Sage is going through yearbooks: a shelf labeled "Class of [X]498" (the first number is obscured by one of Sage's narration boxes.) So it's.....tentatively set in the far future of the PR universe?
= I've said it before that I don't blame the author for apparently not knowing that previously the books established Xybrians like Kartyr follow a name pattern of a one-syllable word (Trip, Star, Ace, Trek, etc) but it is a little funny to imagine the possibilities. Jerk, Dick, Twerp
= I think a joke could have been done with Cruger, a dog, and Yale, a cat, being in the same room together
= I hate that the Academy was founded by Zordon. It's too low-hanging fruit for me. I'll say it again that I wish it could have just been founded by some OC team
= #Lindy4Orange2024 and FUCK the Bandorian Monks!

Please tell me everything about Sarissa of the Summer Court(including build if you like) because she looks so very cool
I'd be delighted to tell you about Sarissa, who left the summer court five or seven years or weeks ago, and I might start with the fact that she struggles terribly with the concept of time. She has forgotten why the Summer Queen sent her to Faerûn, but it was probably important.
Tumblr media
Like many of her kind she's impulsive, jovial and a tad hedonistic. She doesn't plan ahead and she doesn't deliberate for long, nor does she follow a creed or particular set of morals. She weighs everything in the moment and usually doesn't reflect or regret.
Tumblr media
By trade she's a ranger, just a straight up ranger feywalker - with more wanderlust and curiosity than her sisters. Her build, abilities and powers all seem to center around, or even come from, the odd, ancient greatsword she carries. As far as she can recall, she found it amidst the old stones on the border of the Fey, and they 'got along'. She's carried it on her shoulder ever since and not just because it's far too tall for her to carry any other way.
Tumblr media
She collects trophies, trinkets, baubles and bric-a-brac without any thought for a monetary value. She has a very poor understanding of currency and feels like the more identical pieces of something you have the less interesting and worthwhile they are. Tends to pay way too much or way too little.
According to some old custom, she grows her hair out once she's sworn to do something, and cuts the braid off once the task is done, whereupon she wears the braid as a trophy and a token of her accomplishment. As a fey, she values her given word immensely, but does not consider a written word to mean anything at all.
Thanks for asking, i'll gladly consider any more specific questions, like everyone else I LOVE answering questions about my characters, they help me build them and inspire me to draw. <3

We were already mutuals on hegrowth but I just honestly love fellow rangers and Shade is such a cool concept of a character. I just really love the idea behind her and I can already see her and Dronia getting on famously.
What drew you to my blog initially, and what, so far, has made you stay?
bro same, I love me a good ranger character, its part of why I was so excited to write shade ! beyond her lore, of course. but her lore also contributes to it overall so. and again, so glad people like her concept. ; w ; I was worried she would be ill-received due to her lore and how it is involved with the shadow-cursed lands storyline, especially now that I've begun to expand on the mechanics. its been a relief to have people accept her and express interest in her lore ! it makes me excited.
also yeah, shade is just heart eyes at dronia now. its like the stray dog that gets shown kindness or tossed a bit of food for the first time and follows you home. shade is just like. this is a good person, I like this person. and also the amount of respect she has for dronia ! don't get me started. like a younger sister, looking to dronia for guidance and insight and knowledge. willing to learn, and willing to serve. loyal ! they've only interacted a little but yeah. shade is mad respect @ dronia.

What Emanator I Think Acheron Is
I'm calling Nihility. This isn't just because of the proof that she's path of Nihility but a lot more based on what little concrete we know about her and how essentially entropy works since that is what Ix is: The Aeon of Nihility. Of Nothingness. Of Entropy.
And the thing about almost all life that succumbs to that the fastest is in fact our memories. That's partially because memory as a concept is not reflective, it is constructive. We have to recreate the details every time we think about something and thus the new version erodes a bit from the truth with each retelling. It can work a couple times but quickly is distorted, much like how Google Translate can do a pretty good job but you run it through a translator seven times and the product is illegible.
And of course, Acheron's memory issues is one of her biggest elements that we know about her so far. Her inability to remember even where she's going or how she got somewhere is a great gag but it also fits how Nihility in this universe is portrayed. Namely that... It's kind of chill.
Ix is explicitly called a peaceful Aeon. It's one of the few things ever stated about them in the game. They were so chill that some Destruction Dorks went "We want to kill an aeon and since Ix doesn't do shit, let's fuck them up!" Aha laughed, helped them out and they were never heard from again because they're idiots.
Speaking of: This should actually be pretty easy for a lot of people to figure out in Star Rail but Aventurine doesn't mention Nihility because of this fact. Aventurine is building a narrative that Acheron is dangerous and inherently evil and musing that her memory issues may be due to the Nihility consuming them as they;'re created doesn't serve his angle so he leaves it out. Instead, he essentially calls out Nihility's opposite: Finality, which is essentially working from the other direction by going from the end of time backwards, at least in theory.
Frankly, having both Nihility and Finality as two aeons in your story, both about the ends of things, is... Rough. Like they could do something with it but as it is now, we kind of have two different gods of nothing and if Finality is the god of death uh... Have you met the Xianshou or the Loufu?
Getting back to the point, there's one other element to this theory of mine for Acheron: Her reaction to Firefly and how it plays into how she didn't seem to want to draw her sword. See, Ix is peaceful because existence to them is meaningless. Everything will eventually die and end, thus joining with them so Ix doesn't have to do anything. However, take this to a kind hearted person and the idea of a life coming to an end in a brutal, immediate fashion is an absolute tragedy. They were going to die anyways so why did they have to die like this?
Now yes, she's a Galaxy Ranger, at least in theory, but even this tracks. People like the Annihilation Gang (btw, you could count Destruction as an off shoot of Nihility as well) are speeding up a process that doesn't need to be. Doing unnecessary harm when their goal will be met regardless. Any evildoer out there is doing such a thing so Acheron actually would live by the opposite of most superheroes. If you pose a threat to even two people's lives with your machinations, it is her obligation for her to murder you so that they may be taken by entropy instead, rather than allow the harm you wish to cause. Honestly, the bigger surprise is that ANY of Duke Inferno's family are still alive since they all wish to commit horrors upon the universe. If Acheron really did steal the invite from them (which would seem incredibly out of character so far and raise questions on how with her lack of planning/follow through skills) then I would assume she'd have just wiped them all out.
But then my brother who is SO hyped for Katarina would be very sad so ups and downs.
But yeah, with all of that said, I'm sticking with my theory. I've been told when I posted this on Hoyolab that supposedly the leaks have something to say on it but I won't say one way or another in case you're like me and try to avoid those. For now, thank you for listening and see you next tale.

OC Tag Game
Tagged by @mountainashfae. I'm not sure who has or has not been tagged for this, so if it hasn't reached you and you're interested, @turbulentpumpkin43, @silversiren1101, and @bearvanhelsing.
Favorite OC: My dearest and most special boy Caina Lilindel. Definitely one of my peak "working some things out through this one" characters. Special mention to Balthazar as well. Working some things out through that one as well.
Newest OC: I haven't needed to create a character for anything recently... The character I remember fleshing out most recently was Theodora, although her initial concept was from 2021. Theo is a sweet hearted but spoiled young princess who has begun to take a deeper interest in the mystery of her mother's identity as she stands on the cusp of adolescence. Her two dreams are to learn who her mother was and go to a normal school. The truth is that she has no mother, although that's only the first of many things her father has kept secret about his past that come up in her search for answers. Ultimately there's probably not much that will ever come of Theodora's story; you could say she's the non-canonical child of another character.
Oldest OC: That I remember the name of? My first D&D 3.5 character, an elf rogue I made when I was eight years old for a family game. When originally created her name was Nijeera the Swift and she was supposed to be in an AD&D 1e game. It was converted to 3.5 before starting because my dad thought it was a more accessible system for kids and I changed Nijeera's name to N'jira (that pointless fantasy apostrophe...) and eventually gave her the surname Amastacia (one of the default elf surnames). N'jira was a rambunctious young woman who ran away from home for a life of adventure with her half-sister after years of increasing bitterness towards her father after he remarried and moved the family into a new city. She was sassy, reckless, and glory-seeking- a kid's idea of what a fun, cool rogue was like. My sibling played the half-sister, a ranger named Crysta.
I used her as an NPC in a lot of things when I started DMing in high school and college, updating the name to Nadia Amastacia and changing her class to warlock. Nadia is really a more or less entirely different character though. As a warlock, Nadia was born to an elvish aristocratic family that had strong hereditary pride in their magical abilities, with sorcery and more conventional studied magecraft thick in the family tree. Nadia, however, was an absolutely hopeless study with no natural talent. No matter how much she wanted to meet her parents' expectations, she failed again and again until a malicious fey took advantage of her desperation to offer her power at a price: that one day when she reached the height of her beauty, he would come to take her away. The power didn't make her as happy as she had hoped: everything felt off and unearned, and she was driven to conceal the source of her new abilities. And as she aged she began to realize the terrible implications of her pact, leaving home to find a way to break it- ideally killing her patron along the way.
The last time Nadia was played in something it was actually a Madoka Magica homebrew my friend was working on in 2019, where she was the group's mean girl genius whose talents all came from her wish.
Meanest OC: It feels like kind of a cheat to say Balthazar but at the same time as far as developed characters from things I actually work on go... Yeah. Certainly the most actively spiteful and cruel. I have a fondness for characters with a mean streak though, so I think many of my characters wind up mildly unpleasant to be around.
Softest OC: I'd give the award to Melanthius, my pacifist life cleric from 5e. Despite being in their early 30s, Mel is incredibly sheltered, having lived all their life in the temple their parents had dedicated them to. They had always been told that they were especially blessed and favored by their goddess, and they had a strong belief that they owed it to the world to care for others and act as a conduit bringing that blessing to the less fortunate who sought aid at the temple. Despite being kidnapped by conquering general attempting to lay claim to their power and later being held captive by a cult, Mel isn't the kind of person who can hold grudges. They hold no ill will towards anyone and are gentle to the point of fault (despite their inflated ego as the "chosen one"). They struggle to recognize when they are being mistreated- they are quick to blame themself for anything and afraid to confront the abusive nature of their upbringing. Because they struggle to believe anyone is intentionally cruel, they have a way of trying to talk it out with everyone- and had an astounding penchant for diplomancy despite their 9 Cha that broke half the encounters in the adventure and drove the DM insane. Truly, friendship is magic.
Most aloof/standoffish OC: Hmmm. I guess to me these words mean different things, but taking them together it must be Carmen Regis, the fighter I played in Ghosts of Saltmarsh who was later adapted to a cavalier KC for Wrath. Carmen was originally conceived as a 3.5 ranger for a campaign about fey and mysterious wishes that never got off the ground- she was a mounted archer there, a kind of intermediary stage from the two older OCs she was adapted from. But none of that is relevant. The aloofness is pretty clear in her cold, unpersonable demeanor. She's naturally quiet, blunt, and not very expressive unless deeply agitated (and usually angry). She doesn't mean to come off as an ice queen, but she really does... It doesn't bother her much not forming many social connections though. More than any other character of mine, she's married to her job.
Dumbest (affectionate) OC: Absolutely Altin Wastelander, my orc dhampir gunslinger for Outlaws of Alkenstar. She's not even /actually/ dumb. She has 14 Int, I'm pretty sure. And yet despite that, she's an idiot. All she cares to use brainpower on are guns and mechanical contraptions of interest. There's no space in her brain for anything else. She shoots first and remembers she was supposed to ask questions about an hour later. Her idea of stealthily relocating a person involved a sandwich cart and bombing a public square (girl that's terrorism...). She once fired a box of fireworks on a dense crowd trying to inconvenience one guy. She has been repeatedly bringing up the fact that the party has been asked by their employer not to kill civilians just because she's worried that if she doesn't she'll forget. She's convinced a woman she's never seen for more than thirty seconds is her personal rival. She's mad there's a bounty on her head because she was arrested for the wrong crime, where the wrong crime was a high profile heist and the correct crime was holding up a fantasy 7-11. Clown ass CN dhampir. She means so well she just hasn't even stopped to think about the Ethical Issues with her actions.
Smartest OC: Cailo Suncatcher for sure. Despite behaving like a fool and a terrifying penchant for recklessly endangering herself (she is the wizard who refuses to stay out of melee), Cailo is a genius. They taught themself all of the magic they know, and have constantly found ways to innovate with that knowledge. Never content with the knowledge that's already available in the world, she constantly pushes for new understanding of the workings of the arcane and the metaphysical nature of the world. Cailo's foolishness is half facade and half others misunderstanding them: they're happy to present themself in a way she thinks others will underestimate, and believe that there is no situation they can't find a way out of. The confidence isn't unearned. Cailo also wins the title "Most Likely to Ascend to Godhood."
Horniest OC: Character I never did much with named Johannes who was a very, very repressed generic fantasy priest. Not going much deeper into this one since this isn't an nsfw account; Johannes was made to prove a point to someone about my capacity to think up erotica characters.
In terms of characters I have spent more than three days on, I'd give the award to Balthazar simply for being sexually motivated enough that I have to occasionally imagine what it's like to have libido. Truly an alien mind.
OC you’d be best friends with irl: Cailo or my dear obnoxious drow witch boy Olin Foundling. There is some kind of shared neurodivergence between us I think. I want to hang out and talk about interests for hours. I want to hear Olin's blood magic infodump.

"The 2022 High Noon skins"
(remember: shorts are opinionated hot takes delivered quickly, not vehicles for nuance)
SCRIPT(s)
Part 1: A new crop of High Noon skins just dropped, and beyond being yet another reminder how desperately the old High Noon skins need visual updates, what do they have to offer?
Well it's all structured as a big train heist, with a group of champions trying to rob Mordekaiser's infernal Sulfur Rail train, which ferries his victims and the riches he steals and swindles out of people through the gates of hell.
So far we have Mordekaiser, Varus, Talon, Katarina and Leona for revealed skins, with Leona's voice lines revealing that Twitch, Sion, Viktor, Tahm Kench and Samira will be getting a second round of skins as well.
Underneath the train heist, there's an old prophecy about five legendary "Harbingers" - who as far as I can tell are Leona, Varus, Tahm Kench, Katarina and Viktor - who will strike down Mordekaiser and in so doing will possibly, although not for certain, end the world. So the stakes are high on the train heist, and you know what, if you're gonna have a demon infested heaven-and-hell old west, dripping in southern gothic, western myths and delicious edgelord nonsense, a train heist that heralds the End of Days is exactly the kind of tone you should strike with it.
But what about the skins themselves? Well, subscribe for part two.
Part 2:
Watch part one if you haven't, this part two of our look at the new High Noon skins:
Starting off, we have Varus as a dead angel who was nearly content to let Mordekaiser's Sulfur Rail take him to hell, but who is spurred by... something to take up his bow again and join the train heist. As a skin, he's got sort of a Lone Ranger thing going on visually with the mask, but I just don't feel like there's that much THERE beyond "cowboy with a bow," and I feel like the angels are badly underexplored in the High Noon universe.
In the splash we see him battling Talon who... well, Talon's model being Talon's model he doesn't look great in game, but he did get a KILLER short story setting up his narrative called The Stranger On The Road which you should read (or subscribe to my main channel where I will be doing a read-through of it). He's a Devil who has been infected with Angel blood and as a result has grown a conscience that pains him terribly. It's classic half-angel, half-devil edgelord nonsense, which High Noon has maybe a bit too much of already, and again I feel like the design really doesn't do anything interesting with the cowboy aesthetic, he's more or less dressed like Varus, and, like, people did dress more than one way in the old west, y'know, Riot.
Subscribe for part 3, where we’ll tackle Katarina and Mordekaiser.
Part 3:
Part 3 of the High Noon skins, watch 1 and 2 if you haven't:
And here's Katarina, with her daggers which are also guns. Or at least they have gun chambers on them, which... okay, I mean, High Noon has sillier concepts.
She's out for revenge - her people were swindled, Mordekaiser took the spoils, and she means to collect the bounty on his head to even the score. In this regard she's similar to Leona, although it's not clear what if any dynamic the two of them are going to have with each other in the story.
Her design is pretty good - her incredible hairstyle is the showstopper here, which is probably why the rest of the outfit is relatively underplayed in brown and black, and I do like the look of that choker on her.
Which leaves us with Mordekaiser, the Mechanical Devil, the villain of our piece. He runs the train which ferries damned souls and stolen goods to Hell, and while his visual effects are amazing I don't know about the design if I'm honest. He's supposed to be the demon spirit of a ghost train and I'm really missing the presence of steam funnels, pistons, gears, wheels, y'know, all the mechanical stuff that should define him. It all seems to have been loaded on to his mace, which leaves the man himself looking to me far too much like his medieval suit of armor base form, I dunno, I'm a little let down by it.
Anyway, subscribe for part 4, where we finally get to Leona.
Part 4:
Watch parts 1 through 3 if you haven't, but we left the best for last with High Noon Leona, the legendary of the bunch.
And a fair criticism of the skin is that outside of the big shield, it is hard to recognize Leona here. That's part of the general problem of League of Legends women especially having indistinct faces, which this short isn't about, and isn't really this specific skin's fault.
Looking past that, holee SHIT, I dunno about y'all but I think this one is a banger. A the thing that bugs me about High Noon is the human character designs are pretty conservative about fully exploring Old West fashion and aesthetics - it's cowboy hats and leather chaps all the way down, but Leona brings the full gothic southern belle ensemble to the party: Deadly sharp hoop petticoats, frills, laces, ribbons, embroidery, the whole nine yards, and it so much fun just to look at.
She's a woman scorned, her family was robbed by Mordekaiser, and she's leading the heist on his train to get it all back, for which purpose she has acquired... seemingly demonic powers, which manifest as the brimstone butterflies that follow her particle effects, and one of which also sits in her hair as a decorative ornament, which fucking rules.
Interestingly, though, and I do love this detail, Leona is not wearing dainty high society shoes, but big sturdy, riding boots. There's a practical nature underneath all that fashion, which isn't afraid to get its hands dirty.

2 and 67 for everyone in the ttrpg asks!
2. what was your original concept for this character? how did playing them change that concept?
Ezira Gryphonsbane of the Thunderweaver: I really wanted to play a Leonin, and I love my rangers, so I wanted to think about what would make a Leonin a ranger. I decided that the Thunderweaver pride were on the smaller side, so they were dark ambushers and not strict overpowerers. She's so far the closest to my original concept! She got the epithet Gryphonsbane when she one-shotted a griffin.
Rhaelara Rynwalsdottir: Same as Ezira, this was just a character combination I always wanted to play (aasimar paladin). Some of her backstory came from the DM spinning a wheel, like her being the lesser apprentice of Van Richten, and the rest sort of flowed naturally!
M'nish Blacktooth: My beloved. Blacktooth is a gnoll swashbuckler who came about because I did a funny Texas accent and wanted to make my friends laugh. Her backstory at any given time is what I consider the most entertaining.
Katya Volkova: My Blades in the Dark character. I was looking at the character concepts and thought "whoa, a religious academic from a horseback archery community, sounds like Huntress!" In practice, she's if Yelena Belova became a history professor.
Harper Lowell: Kate Bishop is one of my favorite Marvel characters of all time, so of course when I joined a Masks game, I picked the Beacon. I decided Harper was the high school hockey captain who came to the conclusion that team sports and superheroing are kinda just the same!
Briar Blackfang: This is one of my favorite concepts. Briar's from the Root RPG, which is kinda like Redwall. One of the factions are the birds, and I decided that because wolves and ravens hunt together, Briar (a timber wolf) used to be the personal ranger of one of the Eyrie monarchs before the war. I did not anticipate how socially awkward she'd be until later.
Dylan Hartley: I had been wanting to play a VtM game for so long. Gangrel is my favorite of the clans, so I did a ton of research into their lore and decided to make a street rat with a shitty hardcore band, fitting the self-sufficient folk hero type. What i did *not* expect until the game started was that her relationship with her sire would be the closest thing to healthy that VtM relationships get!
Dakota Broward: Ah, my newest blorbo. He started as an NPC in an Urban Shadows game, a demon hunter who befriended my Imp. When that DM and I switched to City of Mist, I revamped him as the Rift (reincarnation / channel for) Sir Gawain.
67. do they consider themselves to be special?
Ezira: "Not at all. I am the sum of all who came before me."
Rhaelara: "Gods, I hope not!"
Blacktooth: "Hell yeah, ain't no one like me!"
Katya: "Of course. I am distinguished in all manner of things."
Harper: "I mean, I kind of think not being special makes me more special, you know?"
Briar: "No."
Dylan: "Insofar as the whole vampire thing goes, yeah, probably. Lyra certainly seems to think so."
Dakota: "By the definition, yes. I'm the only one who bears my specific burden."

What were your thoughts on the premieres?
They were better than I expected and yet still disappointing in a lot of ways, so let me break it down by show:
MED:
Med for me was probably the worst. Dylan’s exit felt really rushed and unnecessary, his relationship with Jo was extremely underdeveloped and the writers admitted to writing him off because they didn’t know what to do with his character anymore which is either racially motivated or so fucking lazy. The Dr. Charles’ patient storyline was fine, except for that doctor on the psych rotation came out of nowhere. I absolutely hate what they did with Crockett, and they’re turning him into a total asshole. Maggie’s storyline feels ridiculous, as if she would immediately be worried about catching feelings for her old baby daddy??? Not to mention the fact that she’s happily married, though we haven’t seen Ben in ages. The camerawork and acting also felt the most soapy. We didn’t even get to see Will testify! All in all, it was a really meh episode for me and the only thing I truly loved was Guy Lockard’s acting, and April’s return!
FIRE:
My thoughts on Fire… so far this has been the most emotionally diverse. Stellaride was great as always, and that plus the Hawkami scenes were the best parts of the episode. Boden’s interactions with Stella were… dare I say out of character??? I don’t know how this storyline with Carver is going to play out, maybe Boden’s being pressured by higher-ups to put Carver on his team or he has ulterior motives, but it was so unlike him to dismiss Stella’s concerns and her opinions about this guy. And then to proceed to micromanage her??? I was very confused. I’m glad she stuck up to him though! But again, I don’t know if that’s leading to something or if it was just really ooc writing so I’m not going to judge that storyline quite as harshly yet. And now, onto the real talk of the town for 11x01, Brettsey. Ohhhhh, Brettsey. You were done so incredibly dirty. I said this on Twitter but I’ll say it here too: the most infuriating part of this breakup to me, apart from the lazy writing in bringing Kyle back and having dragged the LDR out so long before making it all for nothing, is the “the stars just didn’t align” motif that they strung throughout this episode for Sylvie. If your timing is off with someone then fine, yes, that’s ok. Right person wrong time is a valid trope. But “the stars didn’t align”???? Really??? What kind of corny Hallmark crap is that?? It paints love as some fantasy or stroke of fate, and it’s not that. Everything they put in this episode went against the core of Matt and Sylvie as characters, and robbed them of their agency. Love in real life is WORK. It is a CHOICE. It is a COMMITMENT. Sylvie knew what she was getting herself into, and the change in attitude that was so quick and so ooc after the “when yk, yk” moment is the product of extremely sloppy and borderline sexist writing, because these writers have no idea how to write Sylvie and they understand nothing about her. All in all, this was an extremely frustrating episode and though it had more good elements to it than Med, it was still disappointing.
PD:
I honestly don’t even know how to feel about PD. I actually really loved seeing Torres back, I’m so excited to see him interact with the unit and Jay smiling at him was so cute! And I’m not going to lie that the visual/hypothetical idea of Hank Voight walking around this ghost town of a hood like a lone ranger, howling winds, keeping the criminal behaviour at bay, it’s an interesting concept to me. But his shit… his corrupt, violent, obsessive shit… it’s gone on for too long. The fact that he’s doing this as a cop, with a badge on, ruins everything. So whereas I’d say PD is definitely the best produced show, with solid camerawork and attention to technical details, the show paints itself more like an episode of Daredevil or The Punisher, with Voight being the morally grey vigilante. Only problem is, they’re attaching this behaviour directly to the CPD, which makes it— yep, like it’s always been— a copaganda. As for the Jay/Hailey/Voight thing… I don’t know what to think of it. That scene felt so weird to me, it was hard to read the vibe apart from just “tension.” Where do Jay and Hailey stand after this? How are they going to lead this to Jesse’s exit? I don’t know. But I’m getting a liiiiiittle tired of this trio’s drama and their disagreements on policing that have been happening for three seasons now. I liked it for a while, I really did, but now it feels overused and like they’re deliberately sidelining other characters and storylines just to make room for this. I know they need to let Jesse leave but I’m just not seeing the big picture right now. The rough, tough, brutish tension is not enough for me anymore, no matter how complex Voight is.
Anyway, these are my thoughts on the episodes! I’m hoping this sounded reasonably harsh and that you feel free to comment your own thoughts, anon! And to the other anon in my inbox asking about my thoughts on Fire, I hope this ask provides enough answers for you!!

TIMING: Current
PARTIES: @deathisanartmetzli @kayipavci
SUMMARY: Ceyda and Metzli get together to cook, and a little accident reveals some hidden truths.
WARNINGS: None
It had been many moons since anyone but Eilidh joined Metzli in the kitchen. For a while, she didn’t understand why they had such a nice kitchen designed when neither of them had to eat. One good taste of their brain empanadas though, and Eilidh was completely sold on their endeavor, even enjoying the smile baking brought to their face. Small getaway as it was, it meant everything to Metzli to make beautiful things, and painting was great, but there was something about watching someone enjoy a treat they made. They felt useful and kind and soft. No longer did they have to be the sturdy and unmoving monster they were trained to be. They could live a life as calm as they wanted. Have it filled with moments like the ones they were about to share with Ceyda, who seemed as eager as they did.
Metzli figured her enthusiasm was more to do with sharing her culture, which they understood more than most. Being from a different country was jarring enough, but never seeing your food around was a different type of disheartening and painful. They didn’t know much of anything about Turkish food, but they wanted to try so they could give a piece of Ceyda’s life back to her. Most of their dishes were Mexican and even if they couldn’t taste them, they could smell and live vicariously through their loved ones. They clung onto that knowledge, and passed on a few cooking items to Ceyda, quickly tying their favorite apron that adorned embroidered flowers in a traditional Mexican style.
While Ceyda did not have a lot of workplace experience under her belt, she was fairly certain most bosses did not treat their employees with as much kindness as Metzli did. That kindness had often extended to Aylin which only made Ceyda all the more grateful. The ranger herself still felt a bit lost as far as her purpose in life went, but she knew the most important thing she could do was help Aylin be both safe and happy. Already, Metzli had helped with that purpose. Metzli even empowered Ceyda in more ways than that gym owner who cared more about Yelp reviews ever had. So it wasn’t entirely surprising that Metzli wanted to learn how to make Turkish food for her and Aylin to enjoy. Admittedly, it would be wonderful to share her babaanne’s recipes too. Some of those kitchen memories had been her favorites as a kid and to relish in those with someone who could appreciate them would be something special.
It was for that reason Ceyda had come to see her boss as a friend. If she was being truthful, Metzli was probably the best friend she’d ever had. Her hunter community had been good to her, and had always been willing to accompany her on a hunt, but Metzli cared about her happiness, a concept that was foreign to the ranger. Some familiar items were passed to her by a Metzli who admittedly looked very endearing in their traditional Mexican apron. She smelled the bunch of curly parsley now in her hands and commented, “You got the right kind of parsley.” Her smile grew, “Americans seem to think Italian parsley is the only variation. Similar, but the taste isn’t quite right for tabbouleh. My babaanne used to grow a lot of it in her garden.”
“Then again,” Ceyda laughed, “I’ve seen Italian parsley labeled as cilantro at markets. So I’m sure you run into the same things with your home’s foods.”
Tapping on their nose, Metzli smiled and stood a little taller at the compliment. “It’s all in the way they smell. Similar but there are distinct notes that are different. Learned that pretty quickly.” Unable to taste left the vampire at a disadvantage when it came to cooking human food, but they still wanted to try. Their mother had never taught them how to cook, but they had watched from the cracks of the basement door. No matter how long it had been, they could still recall the smell of everything she made. Metzli only wished they could have tried just a single dish, but they’d satisfy that need by living vicariously through the ones they cared about. That’s who they cooked for anyway.
“Have you seen how they’re now calling every single kind of Mexican aguas as spa water? With something as small as labeling Italian parsley as cilantro, it was only a matter of time that that happened.” Metzli sighed, closing their eyes for a few moments to try and remember whether or not they’d tried aguas before. That was a luxury they couldn’t afford on the pesos they found on the ground, especially when food took precedence. They decided they’d lie to themself and say they did, not wanting any more of their childhood ruined.
“Okay, uh…” Looking around, they found their knife and handed it over to Ceyda. “I’ll let you chop and show me how it’s done.”
“Spa water,” Ceyda questioned with a look of disbelief, “I am not entirely sure what that is supposed to be. I suppose if it sounds foreign they try to turn it into something fancy.” With some of the prices she saw for tahini on market shelves, that wasn’t entirely shocking. You would think tahini was something akin to gold with the way they charged nearly $20 for a small jar of it. What made something spa water was beyond Ceyda. She’d never even been to a spa let alone had their water.
Ceyda took the knife being handed to her and readied her hands. While not the same as hunting knives, kitchen knives felt just as at home in her hands. She could remember afternoons spent in her babaanne’s kitchen with Turkish music echoing through the small home. With the fragrant smell of parsley and mint in her nose, it felt even more like a place that used to be home. She bunched the herbs together closely on the cutting board and explained, “I was never as good at this as my babaanne was. She could always chop herbs so quickly and cleanly. It was fascinating to watch.”
With everything in place, Ceyda began the familiar motions and the sound of blade meeting wood with every chop filled the kitchen. “I don’t move quite as quickly. Injuries have never bothered me much, but a sliced finger seems to produce quite the dramatic amount of blood… and ruins the meal.” She kept her motions swift and careful. “What are some dishes that remind you of home?”
As Ceyda parroted their words back to them, Metzli couldn’t help but let out a chuckle. Taking something that was foreign and Americanizing it wasn’t a concept they weren’t apt to. They’d seen it time and time again, with no end or no boundaries. Anything was free game so long as discovery was an option. “If I’m being honest, I don’t know where spa water came from, but I know an agua fresca when I see one.” Metzli rolled their eyes, but quickly got their own tools lined up when they noticed Ceyda ready to chop the herbs.
There was a finesse that the woman had. It was subtle but anyone who was familiar with a kitchen could tell that she had been taught well. “You look pretty good at it to me,” With a smile, Metzli leaned on the counter and watched intently. “But please, no blood. Wouldn’t want to hurt you and ruin the dish. That would just be added insult to injury.” And make the vampire very hungry, but they couldn’t think of that right then. They’d eaten plenty, but just the thought of blood was risking it. So, they refocused, latching onto the sounds and smells. Each chop sent a new burst of aroma from the herbs, and they couldn’t help but inhale quietly. Smelling it wasn’t nearly as good as tasting, they knew that, but they could imagine it. Even with their limited experience with food. That fact, mixed with Ceyda’s question, made acid build in Metzli’s throat, making it difficult to speak.
“Home…uh, well, I…” They dashed to the sink, claiming that something needed rinsing to give themself time to come up with a decent answer. “My tía—my aunt, she made the best pozole. Fresh tortillas. Corn and flour.” Metzli smiled, glad that they had something from the past that was happy. “Everything fresh. She was, uh—when I would visit and work on the farm—that was when I got to actually eat. My family was…poor.” Which wasn’t a lie. But it wasn’t the entire truth either. That had to be enough, Metzli thought, and maybe one day they’d be able to reveal what they were. Until then, it was nice to be normal. For the most part. “Food was more of a necessity at home. So I rarely ate unless it was with my aunt.”
Despite previously working in a gym, Ceyda did find herself all that enchanted with the wellness industry as a whole. All of it seemed to be selling products that were fairly straight-forward concepts at a higher price point and all the powders simply tasted of chalk. She was used to seeing foods she grew up advertised as “heart healthy” at a higher price point. The things people were classifying as hummus these days were getting further and further away from anything that resembled hummus outside of it being a dip. She shook her head as she moved the herbs around to chop them more finely. “Clever marketing,” she laughed, “Not so smart shopping. The stores sell something called ‘dessert hummus’ now in tiny little containers for $7. Which don’t get me started on calling it hummus to begin with.”
As she chopped, Ceyda took in what Metzli was saying. Outside of unplanned longer camping trips and survival training, she’d never really had to go without as a kid. Despite the dangers hunting posed, her life had been fairly simple up until recently. She could see how Metzli had grown to become such a kind person. “That sounds delicious. Don’t think I’ve ever had pozole,” she commented, “You don’t get the most authentic Mexican food up in Michigan.” Once the herbs were chopped finely enough, she set them aside in the bowl and got to work on the tomatoes. “I can’t say I relate there, but a child should never have to worry about those kinds of things,” she said softly, “And yet you are still kind. Giving to others. You’ve been especially so with Aylin. I… appreciate it.” She always worried if she was providing enough for the young woman. Not in the sense of food or material items, but in guidance, especially when she felt just as lost.
Wiping their hands off, Metzli returned back to Ceyda, watching her hands a little more closely than before. Her words made tears form to which they blinked hurriedly in a vain attempt to stop them. They huffed a disenchanted breath from their nose and shook their head, unceremoniously taking a kitchen towel and wiping their face. “Wasn’t always the case, I’m afraid.” Admitting that always hurt, made them wince at every memory of the monster they were. “But I always wanted to be what I never had. Fought for it and was finally set free from things, and now I can give back like with Aylin. I love her and want to give her pieces of what she’s lost because I know what it’s like to lose everything and have nothing.” They shrugged bemusedly, “And I turned into the very thing I was afraid of growing up.”
That wretched monster was a constant reminder of why they fought so hard for their soul. Went on the tumultuous path as a remedy that Metzli made themself. Forged a life of beauty, love, and kindness in the furnace of their losses. Smelted with compassion and hope, never allowing their heart to be ruined by a lifetime of pain. “She’s very lucky to have you, Ceyda. And honestly, so am I. It’s nice to have friends my…age.” A small smile turned into a grin on Metzli’s face and they chuckled, grabbing the bowl of herbs to sniff them happily as Ceyda worked on the tomatoes. “Most of the people I hang out with are like little siblings, and let me tell you, I don’t always understand them.”
It was difficult for Ceyda to imagine Metzli as anything other than the kind person she’d gotten to know. From the moment she walked in the gallery, she got the sense Metzli cared about making it a positive environment for their staff and the clients alike. It had been such a stark contrast to how she’d been treated at the gym that the sense of gratitude she felt seemed natural. “People grow. They change,” she responded, thinking of how much she had changed since taking responsibility for a teenager, “Who you are now is worth celebrating and so are the different paths that led you here.” It warmed her heart to know someone else was looking out for Aylin. She was such a sweet kid, one who deserved the world and Ceyda felt limited in what she could offer her, not that the young hunter ever seemed to mind. “Well, whatever got you here, everything you do now is appreciated,” she smiled, “And it’s good to know someone else is looking out for Aylin.”
While Ceyda was better than no one, she wasn’t sure Aylin was necessarily lucky. Most days, Ceyda had no idea what she was doing. All she ever really knew was the hunt. All her connections had been fairly loose. Hunters had a good community, but there wasn’t much in the way of truly talking through all they went through. It had never bothered Ceyda before, but now she found she wanted to be better. She had a purpose and while she missed hunting, felt her hands were too idle, nothing made her feel quite as good as seeing Aylin smile. “Thanks,” she finally said, “I’m trying my best with her. Admittedly, I don’t know what I’m doing.” It was hard not to think there wasn’t someone out there who was better qualified, but the feeling faded as she was called friend. “I’ve never really had friends before,” she explained, “Not really. More acquaintances than anything. It’s nice to have a friend… the friend is you if that was not entirely clear. But little siblings huh? I take you’re good with kids?”
The way Ceyda spoke made Metzli feel warm inside, and made them feel accepted. Something they were always reaching for. Ceyda had given it to them so easily and with no apprehension. How they got to that, they didn’t know, but they did know that they’d done that all themself. “Thank you. That means a lot coming from someone like you.” They paused, smiling and nudging Ceyda with their elbow, “You know, someone good. Maybe a little weird too. Makes me feel better about my weird.” A bellyful laugh rang out from them and they forgot everything they were sad about before. And that was intentional. What they had at that moment meant so much more, and so did every subsequent one after.
“You were pretty clear, don’t worry. But yes, I’m really good with kids. They’re a lot of fun and you can learn a lot from them.” Metzli grabbed a few more items and handed them over to Ceyda, preparing for the final touches of the dish. “Can’t wait to try this. Next time, I’ll have to make you something from my culture. I’ll cater it to your diet too.”
“Anytime,” Ceyda smiled even if she wasn’t entirely sure what someone like her meant. So much of who she had been was tied up in what she was. She was still figuring out who she was without the next hunt always on her mind. Was that person really someone whose judgment should be valued? If Metzli thought so, as kind as they’d been and after all they had been through, maybe it was. Aylin would agree with the sentiment and she knew as much, but there was something nice about hearing it. “Good,” she said, taking in what they had meant, “I try to be.” She was better when she was protecting people more actively like she was supposed to. “I think weird also fits,” she added with a small laugh, “We can be weird together. I believe they say it’s supposed to be more fun… Not that I know who ‘they’ are, but you know.”
“So I’m learning,” Ceyda agreed, “I always liked Aylin before. I knew her parents before… well, you know. I enjoyed spending time with her, but it’s different now.” There weren’t training sessions of Aylin studying her moves in awe, taking notes and applying them to her own combat style. Things were more a sort of calm now. Nights spent on the couch reading together or a cup of tea out on the balcony, talking about any and everything. “It’s different now. I’m good with her, but I don’t think I get on as well with other kids,” she explained, “I don’t know what they’re even saying half the time.”
Ceyda looked at the meal they had accomplished with a sense of pride. The company made it easy for her to not miss the ease of takeout. “And I’d like that,” she said, “Getting to try some foods from your culture. And learning to make them, too.”
Metzli listened carefully, smiling and cleaning up quietly. They could tell Ceyda wasn’t sure how to take their words, and they could relate. Many things they were deemed as were far from the truth, and it was difficult to sift through what they needed to hold onto and apply. With Ceyda, it was easy to them. “She adores you, you know. Never shuts up about how cool and amazing you are, and I have to say, I agree.” They could see from the outside, watch as she did her best to play parent for an orphaned child. Linger on those eyes that laid on Aylin so often and analyzed the best way to raise her into a model person. By all standards though, Metzli thought their friend was doing great. “You won’t always be right, and you won’t always be wrong, but ideally, you’ll always be learning, and that’s what truly matters.”
Giving Ceyda a final pat on the shoulder, Metzli  gathered a few things and placed them in the sink. “Why don’t you take the plates and get everything set? I’ll get the kitchen cleaned up in the meantime.” Not missing a beat, they gathered the remnants of the bowls and knives, missing one in the process of trying to scoop them in their only arm. They pursed their lips and frowned playfully, still trying to get it for a few beats before they gave up with a groan. “Okay, I tried. Can you get that knife for me?”
Deep down, Ceyda knew what Metzli said was true. She wasn’t sure anyone had ever loved her the way Aylin did. She certainly never felt as protective and or gentle with anyone as she had with the young hunter. Something about it being evident to others was nice. Made her feel warm in a way that wasn’t entirely familiar. “I adore her, too. She’s a good kid,” she said softly, “Despite the terrible things that brought her to me, my life is better with her in it. And thank you.” Her friend made a point. No one would get it right or wrong all the time. All she could do was her best to do right by Aylin. Do her best to give the young hunter the life she knew Aylin deserved. “For her, I’ll always be willing to learn,” she agreed, “I can do that. Listen and learn.”
It felt good for Ceyda to express some of those insecurities and be given comfort in return. The pat on her shoulder only furthered the feeling. “Of course, I’ll get it all set up for us,” she nodded, gathering their completed dishes to set up on the table when the ask for help came. “Oh, of course!” She set everything down and grabbed the knife to hand off to Metzli. “Are you certain you don’t need a hand cleaning up,” she asked, knife outstretch toward Metzli for them to grab.
“Oh, I’m sure. I like a certain way and I’d hate for you see the wrath of my cleaning. It drives Macleod crazy.” Metzli spoke with a grin, the happiness clear in their voice. They kept to their task and reached behind them without looking to grab the knife. “Oh, thank you—” That idea proved to be detrimental, especially with the high quality Metzli had, and they sliced their hand wide open. “Ah! Chingao…” They hissed, pulling their hand to their chest as the thick black goo pooled in their palm.
In a panic, they hid the wound by turning toward the sink, waving to bring the faucet to life. “Uh, please—you can set the table. I’ll get this—fuck!” Metzli exclaimed as the water ran over their wound. They tried their best to make Ceyda go away, knowing their blood would look obviously off to her, to anyone that looked at it. “Don’t worry, okay?”
Ceyda couldn’t help but laugh a bit about the wrath of their cleaning. Their home was very clean, nearly spotless outside the small mess they’d made in the kitchen. She liked to think she was clean enough, but certainly not to this degree. “Understood,” she answered, handing over the knife. When Metzli went to grab the knife, she was too late to call out they were going right for the blade. Not until it had already cut into their skin, revealing thick and dark blood. Far thicker and darker than that of a human. Her eyes widened, unable to pull away from the blood despite the attempts to cover it.
How did she miss it? Ceyda listened over the sound of the sink for another heartbeat, but the only one in the room was hers. Undead. She’d befriended a… zombie? Vampire? Her mind was too addled with shock to try and remember the differences. They hadn’t been ingrained in her like they would a slayer, but it was bad all the same. How could someone like Metzli be undead? They had been so good to her and Aylin, that’s not what monsters were supposed to do. “Table, right,” she nodded shakily, gathering the bowl of tabbouleh and the falafel. She set them down on the table in the other room and braced her own hands against it. Her mind was reeling. How had she let herself get close to someone not human? How did she let Aylin do the same? She was supposed to be protecting Aylin and all this time– No.
Ceyda called out from over by the table, “I’m sorry, I should really go.” They’d made all this food and now she was trying to dash, but she needed to think. To wrap her head around what this all meant. She needed an excuse that wouldn’t cause alarm and she wracked her head as she tried to keep her hands from reaching for one of the various weapons in her the pockets of her jacket. “I’m a little,” she trailed off. Horrified? Disgusted? Confused? “Squeamish.” The lie was hardly convincing. Metzli knew she was a good a fighter, but she needed air. She needed to think.
Once their hand was bandaged, Metzli rounded the corner and saw a distressed Ceyda collecting her things to go. They looked at their hand and wondered if she was actually all that squeamish considering her ability to fight, but they knew better than to question it. “Oh, okay. That…makes sense. I’m sorry I was too reckless. I should’ve known better.” They could hear the way Ceyda’s heart pounded, and it made their shoulders sink with guilt. All the work she put into teaching them a new dish, and they had to go and ruin it.
“I’ll package the food to bring to work tomorrow, and you can make your way out. Sorry again, Ceyda.” Metzli gave her a small smile, and looked worriedly at her. “Take deep breaths and don’t forget to drink water. That always helps me when my anxiety or panic picks up.”
“No, don’t worry about it,” Ceyda said, uncertain if she meant it. Her mind was still trying to reconcile what Metzli was with who they were. It was too much for her to process with her friend right there. Would Metzli still be her friend? Could she be friends with someone undead? She couldn’t figure that out just yet. She needed to talk to someone, sort her thoughts out. Then she was reminded of work tomorrow. She’d need to sort herself out fast. “Thanks, Metzli, that sounds great. I’ll see you tomorrow.”  Deep breaths and water didn’t sound like enough to get her through her entire world view being shaken. “I’ll take care,” she assured, “You take care too, okay?”

Oh thanks for the ask!! This might be a bit long so bear with me... I love answering these.
Iri'thiel (half-drow, fey wanderer ranger) 2. what was your original concept for this character? how did playing them change that concept? Surprisingly, she didn't change all that much from my initial concept! Originally she was meant to be far more religious; I wanted to see if I even could play a character like this. Then her mind was erased, but when she recovered some of her memories the deity stuff came back. The relationship this time is not as much a blind devotion as planned at first, she treats it more like partnership, like being welcomed back by an old friend, not as servant - patron. She was also meant to be a lot more wild, prickly to humans, cracking inappropriate jokes and not giving a fuck most of the time. Some of that was filled by another player, so even though she's still sometimes rude and takes her goddamn time to warm up to others, she cares SO much for her troop and likes to be involved in everything. Much softer than planned, but I like her this way.
Tumblr media
Her ears grew twice the size though and I keep making them longer each time I draw her it's very funny
20. what attracts them to someone—platonically and/or romantically, anything counts. I think it's mostly people being genuine and compassionate. She tries to be that herself, but it's not so easy, so she likes to see that in others. Also those who are not afraid of a challenge, someone she could look up to. She's generally attracted to non-human people, the more interesting kinds of elves mostly. Maybe it's got to do with gravitating towards the fey-adjacent and their chaotic and interesting nature. Also women. Yeah.
21. do they have an idea about how they’ll die? do you? At this point this could be literally anything, multiple times XD But for the final death, I hope she goes out in a fight just like before, but fighting for something she chose to defend, or dying peacefully somehow in the far far future if she'll be allowed to see it.
Tumblr media
69. what’s one secret they don’t want getting out? That's a tough one since she might have secrets she doesn't know about yet (not all memories yet recovered). At this moment maybe her youth/teenage "adventures" of trying to fit in, just because she'd probably be ashamed of herself/afraid to talk about her life before now. As shy as she can be she'd probably be fine with sharing most of herself in time, though.
--------------
Enoch (firbolg, shadow monk/archaeologist kinda) 4. what one person, place, or thing do they love more than anything else? There was probably a half buried house, or some other caved in place in the ruined city of the Bone Valley that they studied in. A small space being reclaimed by nature that they could've meditated at or trained at when not at work of recovering the forgotten libraries of that place.
7. there’s a magic item (or technological innovation, or special resource) made just for them—what is it? Some device that essentially could create a pocket dimension for thoughts. Where they could store what they learned, what they read, thoughts they had that needed to be remembered, important conversations, etc. All for recording the world around them.
40. if you had to remake this character right now, how would you change them? Since this character was created for a one-shot at a moderately high level, I would probably go more in-depth of their learning to add them more skills/proficiencies in certain areas like Arcana or Perception or Persuasion to be a bit more useful and in accordance to what they do. Teach them more languages that they learned with all the books around them. But other than that, not many changes actually. I really like this build and their story.
Tumblr media
52. how would they dress themselves up for a formal event? Simple black with hints of green, tight minimalist design. Alternatively grey with complicated floral patterns, wide slacks and wide blazer. As gender neutral as possible, but probably wearing makeup on the eyes.

LAST TIME ON RANGER ACADEMY: Sage is fully committing to the high school life, even if there are some obstacles like bullies, hard classes, her friend's tragic backstory, and the discovery of the Chamber of Secrets.
But there's no time to dwell on that, because it's time for the Morphin Trial, where kids are dumped in a hostile landscape to be color-coded by some weird old alien cult. Sounds legit!
It's Ranger Academy #4!
Before we begin let's take another look at that Katie cameo. Sure she doesn't do anything but drive the bus and I still have no fucking idea how these cameos work when they're appearing in-person vs those inter dimensional tubes but it's at least nice to see her
Tumblr media
ANYWAY. Time to drop some children off to die
Tumblr media
= So some lore stuff established already is the Bandorian Monks reside on the planet "Chromia" specifically in the "Zeo Chamber" in "Prism Peak." It only opens for a limited amount of time once a year. From what I can remember none of this, except the Zeo Chamber I suppose, was in Eltarian War's established lore, but I guess that can be chalked up to Ranger Academy being its own thing. (And for what it's worth, the Zeo Crystal itself is not in the chamber.)
Tumblr media
= yes yes guys we get it you want that video game/RPG adaptation
Tumblr media
= This is so valid of Theo but unfortunately for him I know what happens to PR characters with his kind of jokey, charismatic personality
Tumblr media
= So are they going to be the book's main romance or not. I'm calling upon protection spells against sisterzoning
Tumblr media
= NO NONON ONONONONON NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO DON'T DO THIS
Tumblr media
= So.....okay. Here it is. Here's the line
So obviously there are colors missing from the Academy and at the very least Theo's dialogue is implying that's on purpose. Which makes me hopeful for my old "Camp Half-Blood" theory that this book will end with more color campuses being added. And obviously, Theo's source isn't telling the whole story or getting facts wrong.
But. Look.
Even if Lindy's dialogue is only saying that Green and Orange Rangers don't exist in the Academy rather than the universe as a whole, the entire concept of certain colors being forbidden or unknown is ridiculous when this is a school that fully encompasses itself in Ranger history. Sage mentioned in a previous issue learning about Jen and why their library is named after her, so their adventures must be part of the curriculum. Even if it isn't, their teachers are Ranger alumni. ONES THAT HAD GREEN RANGERS ON THEIR TEAMS. Their bus driver was KATIE! She can't talk about Trip, her best friend? Crueger never brings up how Green is the third-highest ranking ranger at SPD? I think this wouldn't even annoy me so much if they weren't equating Oranger Rangers (of which there have only been three official ones in the franchise, with others being so-so canon) to Green Rangers (of which there's only been. four seasons, I believe? where there was no Green at all). I know Power Rangers wants Green to be special but it just simply doesn't work because by definition, it isn't.
I think this would only work for me if a) we establish that the present of Ranger Academy is set either extremely far in the past or extremely far in the future, where Rangers either barely exist yet OR it's been so long that the canon we know has been shrouded in legend or b) we didn't have the alumni ranger cameos and we establish this school is completely cut off from the established canon we know. And the last one doesn't work because they clearly want the cameos to be one of the main gimmicks of the series. So idk. It's probably Ranger Academy's biggest headache for me
And just in general I don't know how "forbidden colors" work when the students' color is just chosen based on what the Monks see inside them. It should be unique to them, not based on a criteria that can pick and choose or throw out different options.
ANYWAY. The trio finds Kartyr and Maev and, unsurprisingly, these children are about to die
Tumblr media
= what's with Green Rangers having to rescue their rivals that suffer broken ankles. Oops, spoilers
Tumblr media
= Sage has only been part of this school for a few months and she's already indoctrinated into their religion
Tumblr media
= Kartyr is such a hater for no reason. You should be connecting with your green-haired brethren
= Also I just realized that Kartyr is most likely a Xybrian yet he doesn't follow the naming motif that Trip and the Supersonic Rangers did. I won't hold it against the author as the Supersonic Ranger origin story is pretty obscure but still, it's funny to me.
Though wait if he's a Xybrian shouldn't he know about Trip and how he's a Green R [I am yanked offstage via a giant hook]
Tumblr media
= Okay guys I get we're using MMPR theming but are really trying to say Pink Rangers are good pilots? Because what, Kim had flying zords? That's getting a little ridiculous. What's next, Pink Rangers are all amazing archers?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
= Maev becoming Yellow was a little surprising since Mathis is already a major character who's yellow, but at the same time I'm really not sure.....what the guidelines are to what color each person becomes. It feels kind of arbitrary at this point tbh. Though maybe it's just because I don't really know Maev as a character yet compared to Theo, who fits the Black Ranger archetype like a glove
and speaking of which
Tumblr media
= Lindy not being able to morph genuinely pissed me off like. Again. What are the guidelines here. What about Lindy isn't ranger-worthy. Can I just call the Bandorian Monks racist for denying a Black girl the chance to morph because I think I'll just do that
Tumblr media Tumblr media
= SHAME SHAME SHAME SHE HAS THE MARK OF THE DEVIL (her novelty lightning bolt coin turned green, a color that has never existed before this)

I'm still prossecing the Power Rangers Dino Fury Finale. So. A collection of things I like and don't like about Power Rangers Dino Fury, from the top of my head. Obviously it's easier for me to articulate what I don't like than what I like. Will add to it if I forget anything.
Things I like:
Izzie being a butch Lesbian. Good job!
Amelia. Surprisingly she was my Favorite character.
Amelia being an Alien. Yes!! The reveal she was a Rafkonian was amazing.
Surprisingly, the relationship between Ollie and Amelia. In my first watch of season 1 I was dreading them getting together but I really liked them in my second watch. Though their relationship initiation was not nearly as funny as it should have been.
The comic Relief characters! Jane and Jborg! Mucus and Slyther! Yes!! More of this! My favorite comic relief characters in all of power rangers.
Apparently Amelia is going to be the red Ranger in the next season. Yes! Perfect!
Ollie's mom and Solon! Love them!
Void Queen! She's really pretty and scary!
The attempt at developing Rafkon Culture is nice.
Things I hate:
Rafkonians. What dumb uninspired Aliens. Previous Power Rangers seasons had better Alien.
The fact that the Rafkonians still remember Zayto. That really can't be f****** true. I doubt after so many years they would even call themselves Rafkonian.
Why do the Rafkonians remotely remember Zayto. I call Bullshit.
The Zords being able to be piloted by anyone.
The Sporix being inherently evil, and also desperate to take orders. That is such bullshit. These do not fucking align.
The Sporix machine making everyone loyal to void Queen. Why?
The morphing Masters. Garbage fucking Concept. No. This is bad.
The Dino Master sword also fucking sucks. Absolutely dogshit concept. No.
The characters are extremely flat shallow and one dimensional.
They keep using Ayion to teach the basic little kids lesson. That's gotta be at least a little racist.
They have a key that puts an enemy to sleep instantly and they never use it. They genuinely have too many Keys and it feels like they never use any.
The extreme lack of progress. That's pretty common for most Power Rangers shows, but to this one especially, because they never kill their enemies. They physically can't. The best they can do is catch their sporix, and they basically never have a chance to do that. Also, The only ones that come up with strategic plans are the Enemies. It feels like they never make any progress at all.
Amelia's storyline about finding her Parents is not spread out at all. It's all in a clump at the end pushing the final battle to the background and it ruins everything. Sprinkling it throughout the show better would have made the entire story so much better.
I also really didn't like Tarick and Serpenteera being Amelia's Parents. Felt overdone and annoying.
Tarick and Serpenteera should not be fucking redeemed. Absolutely fucking not. No.
Who the fuck thought bringing back Lord Zedd is a good idea. No. Absolutely fucking not.
The morphing grid is a dumb fucking Concept. No. Please stop trying to unify Power Rangers Please.
Javi. For no Particular reason as I far as I know.
Warden Garcie. Hate this mother fucker so fucking much. I keep hoping for him to die.
The hengeman. I think they were kind of dumb. Why would they be controlled by that weird key. Who built them. Why can't Solon Hackthem. Why does void Queen still have access to them after Tarick Betrayed her with the chroma sword that should control them.
The fucking drill can break through the Rangers base. Not a chance in hell. It's not even a military drill. It's a drill to install pipes. Building a robot to do that would have been genuinely much easier and would make much more sense in all Perspectives.
Almost forgot: The recycling of villains. It's really f****** blatant. Wreckmate died in season one in the episode he was introduced. And then they just pretended they didn't kill him, and left him not dying numerous times when he should have died. Killing him only in the last fucking second.
Also they just completely forgot about Slyther in season 2. Which is a shame cuz he was funny. Not nearly as funny as mucus but still very funny. So much better than f****** Wreckmate.
All of the rangers but Ayion are completely fucking Identical. I really f****** hate that.
Things I found wierd:
Buzzblast. One of the wierder Power Rangers hang out spots. There's nothing to do there. Only two of the rangers actually work there.
What?! Age?! Is?! Everyone?!
What exactly are Ollie's credentials? What exactly makes him remotely capable of working with ranger tech or assisting Solon. Why is his mother Doctor Akana, an Archeologist, know all the shit she dose. Like what the cocoon is going to do, or all that shit. Seems like the writers just threw the science characters and said "Science is Science".
I'm definitely forgetting a few things but that's it for now.

A History of my Hybrid Theory AU
Hi everyone! So I talk about it a lot, I draw it a lot, but never really put a big thing out about the concept behind it and how I came to write a Kiragog fic. Mostly I wanted to write this because some people got the wrong idea about my reasons for writing Hybrid Theory as something inappropriate. It is not, I will never write underage relationships.
Originally I came up with trying to ship them when I was in my first year of high school. I had already been writing some fic at the time and was informed, its cringe to add yourself as the love interest...so I used Kira as a stand in. Obviously as I got older I realized hold on...this is also creepy and as I entered college wondered how I could make this work
Look under the read more for more story!
I knew I had to have Kira older so in the original incarnation Mesogog was captured by SPD and needed a handler more familiar with him as for five years he had become restless. All the other rangers refused but Kira had become jaded by her career and signed on to help SPD. Eventually she left her music career to work black ops for SPD, with Mesogog as her lieutenant, in an effort to recapture her feelings back in her power ranger days. I may come back to this at some point as an AU AU but finishing Hybrid Theory first.
This one got really dark for me kind of fast. But I did go fairly far writing it and planning it.
Hybrid Theory came out a slightly different version of that original one by having Kira assisting on rehabilitating him but that did not feel like it fit properly having her help so willingly.
So I went with the chance encounter route, because she needed a reason to trust him due to their first meeting being...less than nice. So I went with the selfless bit of heroism. He got in the way of a mugger and protected her and the rangers.
With this I did not think I could go the same sort of “black ops” route with Kira at least not yet. I genuinely decided lets make this comedy and sweet and a chance for me to deal with my own dumb emotional issues.
This development took the course of well over ten years at this point considering how far back I started. I will be making a Hybrid Theory tag so I can keep things under there.
Hybrid theory will go a little off the rails for the fact it happens AFTER Dino Thunder and I am playing with ideas such as “where did Mesogog get all his equipment and supplies?”, He only wanted Earth so how would he defend it from other threats because clearly a Grumm would not care Mesogog had called dibs.
Which brings up the Alliance part of the story and its an excuse for me to make Kira more badass again.
Thanks for reading y’’all!

facts about my transgender warforged d&d pc, Rune:
she is a spores druid who carries around part of a hyper-intelligent, world spanning fungal hive mind inside of her body
this hive mind is her best friend(s) and they talk to each other telepathically
she is also a swarmkeeper ranger, which means there is a colony of bugs living inside her in conjunction with the fungus
her swarm is controlled by the fungal hive mind cordyceps style
she is 4'10" and her body is made of porcelain, and so if you gave her a hug it would feel like holding a warm teacup
she was originally created to work at the infirmary for a college, but she became hyperfixated on the concept of physical sensation and what it feels like to actually have senses. she got fired for asking patients too many questions
then she became the school's groundskeeper while reading every biology textbook in the library
which landed her a job as the resident biology professor and owner of a sick greenhouse in the center of the school's courtyard
she carries around a massive grimoire with her everywhere she goes. it's filled with notes on anatomy, zoology, mycology, and botany, in addition to drawings of plants and people she befriends
the spores from inside of her body leak out regularly, so she always has a halo/miasma of spores around her. this makes her off putting to most people, which netted her a -1 in charisma
to make up for this, she tries to be as kind and hospitable as possible
she took up tea brewing as a way to make friends, and she spent years learning how to make tasty tea only with what grows inside her body
she has a familiar named Archimedes, who currently takes the form of a raven
she once had to go to an island that was anti-magic (including warforged), so she disguised herself. however, her eyes gave away her away, which meant she had to blindfold herself to stay hidden. and because she couldn't see, she had to look through Archimedes' eyes while he perched on her shoulder, kinda like Roswell from TAZ
she has pulled from the deck of many things about 3 times now because she views it as the greatest possible experiment. she has gotten a +2 to both her wisdom and constitution, a near-permanent -2 to all saving throws, and all of her magic items once disintegrated (including an incredibly important plot critical book)
she is the smallest member of the party by far but also has the most hit points and regularly deals the most damage in combat thanks to shillelagh, extra attack, and gathered swarm
she is affectionately known as The Robot Linebacker and The One Hit Wonder
she did her own gender affirming surgery via a magic spell, which she then proceeded to name herself after. there is now a magic rune carved into the porcelain that makes up her sternum
none of the party members have ever seen her exposed skin, except for an ungloved hand on occasion. when they first met her she wore a massive witch's hat and robe that covered everything in shadow besides her eyes. and then later when she switched to wearing overalls and sweaters she started wearing a pitch black funeral veil
she has only wild shaped once in her life, and it was to turn into a worm so she could get inside someone's body

okay so i need to reorganize my characters as far as who is gonna end up ingame
like, going by who i have no real backstory for and who i have no real use for...
honestly while i wouldn't mind a second necro. veruca has gone NOWHERE storywise. i have nothing for her. and honestly, while i enjoy her design and the idea of her, i'm not particularly attatched to her?
honestly, same with jenni and sappho. i could recycle their physical designs to something new, perhaps. i won't get rid of them entirely, especially since i feel terrible that i have NO asura.
astrid, i had a backstory finally, but someone else posted immediately after that theirs had the same concept and like. don't wanna step on toes. but i'm attached, so i'll figure something out. besides, i need another ranger.
mal...oh god i don't need a third engi!!!! what am i thinking!!!! but its just so tempting designwise...and i wanna use that face...what else could i even do with her? i mean...if its purely for mechanist. maybe.
andante and oleander are both music based mesmers. andante would take the missing niche of virtuoso from wisteria, and i'm fine with how she looks in-game. it might be time to let oleander exist only in art.
finally..................soleil. i have her ingame. i almost never use her. her story is there, but its. nothing. i have nothing more to add for her. hell, even for most of the canon storyline, she's got nothing to do but be a priory researcher. yet i don't...wanna delete her??? also i feel bad she's just like. a device to make aisling more interesting. however i also don't. have another guardian planned, and i do enjoy guardian. so idk.
so like. if i were to eliminate all of these. only Astrid, Andante, and Mal, make it in, with Soleil on thin ice. which? actually kind of a relief, but also. now i'll have to actually draw the other ones if they're not gonna be ingame lmao
i do also have some consideration for my unnamed Specter that i still wanna do.
