Rating Rune Factory Children

(Because I play favorites)

Rune Factory (1)

1/10

Cute but not much else to say. You have to wait a ridiculous amount of in-game time to get one short cutscene meeting your genderless nameless child (Game doesn't even bother to give them pronouns) and then never get to interact with them again. Disappointing.

Rune Factory 2

8/10

A unique idea that the series has yet to implement again, this game let you play through the second half of the game AS your child from the first half, and honestly It was a cool concept even if the gameplay got a little wonky and unbalanced near the end. The game also introduced the first female protagonist to the series, Aria (left). She and her twin Aaron (right) actually had some personality of their own and even had unique interactions with the other villagers and children of the town. Cool concept and solid designs. I just wish you could interact with them a little more as a parent before the timeskip.

Rune Factory Frontier

I may be a little biased here, as this was my intro to Rune Factory, but I love these kids. Default names; Leif and Leona, are the first, and so far only, RF children you can interact with at multiple stages, these kids have several cutscenes documenting different milestones and are quite cute to watch. Once they reach the final stage, they don't do much besides toddle around the farm and look cute. You can gift them certain items but that's about it. Still, It's refreshing to watch your kid grow over time as apposed to the usual montage you get with RF kids.

Rune Factory 3/ Rune Factory 3 Special

They get bonus points for being the first in the series to let you have multiple kids (up to three) problem is, there's not much difference between em. The birth of each one plays about the same and while there's technically some different "personalities" it's more like each kid get a random lot of four or so unique lines of dialogue and that's it. There are also just the two sprites so if you have two or more of either gender they'll be identical, no matter the age difference. You can't gift them and they don't sleep, leave the house or even show up on the map. Honestly they're little more than cute house accessories.

Rune Factory Tides of Destiny/ Rune Factory Oceans

First off, please pardon the crappy quality. This game doesn't have traditional character portraits so it's hard to find decent quality pics. Tides of Destiny kiddos were the first in the series to inherit physical features from the player's spouse. (Pictured are Electra's daughter and Sonja's son) They appear to use the same child models as Frontier with some minor cosmetic changes but I liked Frontier's kids so no complaints there. I do wish they had real portraits and more dialogue but they're okay. At least they'll accept gifts and the events leading up to their births are quite wholesome.

Rune Factory 4/Rune Factory 4 Special

RF4's kids are darn near perfect. Luna and Noel have identical dialogue but they have more to say than any RF kids before or possibly since. There are TONS of unique exchanges and events with them, they participate in festivals, and most interesting of all, you can equip them with gear and take them adventuring! These babies are really something special. If I had to pick one complaint, I'd say I wish they looked liiiittle more like their concept art. They look like they both got aged up a little, which isn't bad but they do look barely younger than some of their possible parents...

Rune Factory 5

9.5/10

Rune Factory 5's children are right up there with Noel and Luna, but they get a slight advantage when it comes to customization. Like RF3 this game lets you have up to three kids, but unlike that game, these kiddos are treated like actual characters. Depending on your choice of spouse and your answers in a particular conversation, your kids can have a variety of looks and personalities, including the fan favorite feature of inheriting hair and eye colors from the spouse, and continuing along that customization train, these babies can once again go adventuring! My one, one small gripe...It'd be nice if your eldest could grow a little by the time their siblings are born. Heck, it'd be cool if the villagers kids could grow too. I'd love to see teenaged Julian and Hina~

So there's my thoughts on the Rune Factory children. I hope future installments continue the trend of more giving their kids more personality and better customization, maybe someday we'll even see kiddos inherit traits from non-human parents? How cool would that be if your kid could actually look half elf or mermaid or furry wereanimal? XD

@darkacey saw ur rf5 headcanons and I love them so much! Thought I'd share a few post game headcanons I have myself:

-Yeah Hina deffo gonna help her mom with the general store as she gets older. I personally see her doing double duty working at spa as well.

- when Radea settles into town, she lives at the inn. Similar how Dylas becomes live-in staff at the restaurant when he moves into town in rf4 I think Radea does the same for the inn/hotsprings. Meddling with a romance story between her and Mk.

- Beatrice doesn't come back to town because even after the king gets better she still succeeds the throne. Though like the king in rf4 she does sneak away a lot to her favorite little town. Her favorite things to do are visit her dear bakery grandparents and bring gifts for all the kids

- Pairings in town with kids are gonna be Alice and Scarlett (Eris is their kid) Cecil and Fuuka (the twins Nalhwa and Hyuwa (acey thought the names you gave them were adorable, figured i'd use them too)) Radea and Murakumo (tba; at least 4 kids for them. Maybe more.) and lastly Martin and Ryker (they're gonna adopt a mysterious abandoned child and it's gonna be very buddy daddies-like)

- Ares and Reinhard have a lot going on that I'll hopefully succeed at getting to in my comics but long story short, they won't be in town anymore. But because Reinhard values family bonds so much, he does make sure that Ares comes back every now and then to visit the Silo crew. (Plus he also reaaallly like to dote on baby Eris, so it's a bonus for him)

- Whenever Meg is in town, she definitely always hooks up with at least Ludmila. Other people include Elsje, Misasagi and Terry (tho he's a loner so doesn't join them for any group stuff. Meg is only with him when they are both drunk and depressed). This becomes so regular that she and Ludmila eventually do have a kid together, but she doesn't stay to help raise the kid. Ludmila doesn't mind tho and is a happy single mom.

-Elsje and Priscilla are a team running the restaurant but Priscilla eventually moves on to open a used bookstore with Lucy after they get married. They are going to have So. Many. Cats. (And at least one dog who is Lucy's running partner)

-Cecil eventually earns Terry's trust and works as his proper assistant.

And many more but my brain is frying so I'm going to leave it at here for today XD

To be honest it's usually most of them, though I've been getting less...idk intense about it? It's been less of an issue lately? Maybe it's cause my current main is Ian Duff, a dating sim character, so it makes it a little easier to deal with?

Generally I just block people if I see we share an f/o unless it's a mutual then I just block their tag for that character.

One of my favorite games (despite never writing about it here) is Russian Fishing 4. I've tried quite a few fishing simulators, and nothing's better from my point of view, despite it not having the fanciest graphics or the largest number of species.

With that out of the way: yesterday I caught a trophy burbot on Belaya River in RF4! My second ever big fish trophy (first was a lake trout). Thing is, I had a bad luck with burbots lately. If it was a kilogram that was already good.

So. Feeders with size 1 hooks and fish meat cast, I waited.

Ring-ring-ring! -went the bell on one. So I pull. And it's something big. I pull and pull, and it's heavy and stubborn. Thought it was a catfish, sure, those aren't caught at night usually but maybe it wanted a midnight snack.

About 15 minutes of real time later I dragged it onto the shore. Nine and a half kilograms worth of burbot.

Holy. Shit.

That baby sold for a lot, replacing the trophy trout in my profile as the most expensive fish.

And now I'm saving for a carp rod because seriously. That was hard. Clearly I need to get more serious.

Okay Murakumo simps. The recipe system is basically the same as in RF4 and the dumplings Murakumo loves are a level 2 steamer recipe. All it takes is rice flour. Really cheap and really easy to make.

Give him that and a random knife fish dish you made (homemade gives more affection points) every day and his LP will skyrocket. Also use the inn’s baths a lot because that will ALSO randomly increase his affection once you get the bathing skill high enough.

EDIT:

Also SAVE BEFORE CONFESSING. Unlike in RF4, you can’t confess every day until they accept. RF5 will make you increase their affection by a whole level before you can try again. Otherwise you’ll just keep getting rejected.

Don’t be that toxic person. ALL YUU’S ARE VALID. Female, male, trans, non-binary, gender fluid, etc. Yuu is a canon self-insert, stated so by the creator herself, and therefore is whatever and whoever the player wants them to be. They do not have a specific identity.

Yuu is also not an official student by any normal means, as they are magicless and are only half a student. Ace’s comment in the first episode does not pertain to them. Game!Yuu and manga!Yuuken are also two totally different characters, as stated by the creator.

3. What ideas come from when you were little?

Oh God my ideas from when I was little were kind of ridiculous, a lot of just silly self insert crossover stuff that I would take like really seriously

Like 7-9 year old Kateh had a whole self-insert soap opera thing with like Sonic characters where like sonic and I were besties and like there was this dumb love triangle where like I had a crush on Tails that he didn't reciprocate but then like Knuckles had a crush on me that I didn't reciprocate and like Amy and I were spiritually connected like sisters for some reason???? And also Team Rocket was there as like antagonists but they also had their own romantic subplots going on because apparently I was like a baby rocketshipper ksjdjdhd

And I would like to tell myself stories in my head in this universe like every night before I went to bed and that was just my life

I think it's safe to say that I've always had a love of just complicated and emotional character dynamics, which is definitely something that shows up and a lot of my less silly stuff.... that I don't usually post to Tumblr--

4. Fav character/subject that's a bitch to draw

Oh God there's a lot of characters that I love but I just cannot fucking draw, or if I can it's like a giant pain in the ass

Duncan Man-at-Arms MOTU is a good example of this because like everything past his face (including like the whole rest of his head) is agonizing to draw even if I do love him as a character

Also shout out to Vishnal Rune Factory 4 for having an incredibly detailed design that is not only kind of inconsistent between in-game portraits and official artwork but also incredibly time-consuming to draw even when you try to simplify it like a lot (this also applies to like nearly every other character in Rune Factory 4 but he is one of the worst offenders) and if not for this I would have probably drawn a lot more RF4 comics back when that shit was consuming my entire brain lmao

5. Estimate of how much of your art you post online vs. the art you keep for yourself

Y'all on Tumblr only see a very small portion of my art, like 10%-15% depending on how productive I'm feeling

If we talk a lot on Discord you probably see about 20% of my art because there's a decent amount of stuff that I post either in DMS or like Squad group chat that I don't post to Tumblr, either because it's gifts for friends, oc stuff that would require way too much context to post elsewhere (unless y'all ever want that context sometime--) or some things that I would be a little too embarrassed to have leave my very tiny circle lmao

The rest of it is mostly just doodles that I either don't feel like they're worth cleaning up to show anybody or I would be way too embarrassed to share because it's like incredibly self-indulgent stuff lmao

So since it’s hard to bring my Switch to a restaurant, I grabbed my 3DS and popped RF4 in. Meaning...now I’m copying everything off my calendar in-game in order to add to that calendar project I’ve been working on. So many Spring babies...just like RF5 is full of Summer babies...

(this includes my own in-game kid just because it fell the way it did when I finally got Vishnal’s final event...)

This is an invitation, should you choose to accept it, to infodump about Rune Factory. (I saw it on a popular games list the other day but don't know anything about it. As a player, I figure you'd know what makes it worth playing :) )

Rune Factory is a JRPG/farming sim has a little bit of everything in it. Combat? Check. Mix and match weapons and equipment? Check. Anime tropes? Check. A meticulous farming feature? Check. A colorful cast of characters you enjoy interacting with? Check. Romance, marriage, and a baby? Check.

I’ve only really played Rune Factory 4 and 5, both of which are available on the Switch, but the games are a lot of fun. 4 especially had me hooked and kept me sane amidst all the stress of planning my wedding. What I really like about it is that you can tailor the gameplay to your own preferences. If combat isn’t your thing, and you mostly want to focus on farming while progressing through the story, you can set the difficulty to easy. If you want to give yourself a hard time, you can set it to Hell Mode. You can take as long or as short a time as you want in progressing through the story, too; there were times when I got sick of a certain dungeon and spent a couple in-game weeks fishing and tending to my crops and livestock instead. The experience can be as chill or as stressful as you want it to be.

You also get a LOT of content for the price. I put over 100 hours into RF4, and there’s still an entire bonus section of the story I’ve yet to complete after the main story, as well as some crops I haven’t tried growing yet. I keep meaning to go back and continue playing.
