ongoing projects : Player By Proxy : #pbp | oc tags : to be linked | aes tag : #pbpaes alternate history+fantasy+heroic tragedy >> oc masterlist << The first children of Creation fight against each other in a game of domination to conquer Earth, knocking each other out one by one until the last remains. The winner inherits the three planes of existence and rules supremely alongside Creation itself. Humans are used as pawns in this game, graced with part of their respective God's soul to fight in their honour. Follow humanity as they struggle to win a game they have no real player status in. #pbp:shell : A scholar in 1870s London comes back home, injured after an unsuccessful scientific presentation. hi berry. just saw your ranking for p1h's eras, do you think you could do one for txt?
absolutely. this is actually fun only problem is my stan list is so small 😭 but anyway.
(i'm not including their japanese or single releases)
• for me, album and era (content wise) go hand in hand so if i didn't enjoy the album that much, that meams i didn't like the era much and vise versa. this is also based off of how i was doing by the time of these eras.
• i might be biased but (just like for p1h) i don't think they have a bad era bc i personally enjoyed all of them just some more than others.
• please note that this is my opinion and you're allowed to be opposed to it
--
8th place:
Tumblr media
• we needed an 8th place 💀
• nothing against her or anything, she's cute, i just didn't enjoy/am not enjoying this album (or era) that much
• but dreamer?? please don't play 😭
• they (bighit) also did beomgyu dirty in this album so that makes me feel slightly better for putting it last.
i rest my case
--
7th place
Tumblr media
• it's literally my comfort ep so don't think i didn't like this era bc i did. however, my focus was not on txt all that much during this time because of school and c0vid and all that stuff. i was more stressed at this time than when i was in matric therefore i wasn't enjoying my time too much.
--
6th place
Tumblr media
• we needed a 6th place so... 😬
• again, i love her, i was just just focused on other things but that doesn't mean i didn't enjoy this era, i just liked others more than this one.
--
5th place
Tumblr media
• my comfort album 🤧
• guys 20cm is my song i swear 😭😭
• it was nice. that time before it's release wasnt though
--
4th place
Tumblr media
• guys everyone was struggling around this time of the year and they came and saved the day fr 😭
• and you know what? i appreciate this ep (justice for cysm)
--
3rd place
Tumblr media
• guys i was fighting demons during this era i swear but i won't let that take away from the fact that the songs were great and we got CONTENT hello?
• guys opening sequence is literally the best first track 😭😭 like come on now
--
2nd place
Tumblr media
• art.
• guys i love this ep so much 😭
• delivered and devoured. like it's literally one of their best eras.
• don't talk to me about tinnitus, that song was made for me. their best song fr (am i biased bc im african? maybe)
--
1st place
Tumblr media Tumblr media
• yes i'm counting them as one.
• when i tell you i love this era, i mean it.
• hands down my favorite era of theirs. the album(s) were golden, we got content, i was at my happiest at that time and i often find myself wishing to go back.
• it was so fun guys i swear 😭

adding onto this post in the weirdest way possible, i really do respect dream’s music and wilbur’s music in two vastly different ways
i think the two things i tend to judge music on are simply if it slaps or if the lyrics are dramatic, and both dream and wilbur encompass that really well
wilbur in lovejoy brings me back to my 3rd grade days JUST finding out about fall out boy’s thnks fr th mmrs, and the drama of hearing these lyrics i don’t really understand on top of music that just sounded really COOL to me; in our current era where pop is king, i really enjoy how lovejoy kind of actually does remind me of my fall out boy phase, hell, even jokingly comparing wilbur to scratch21 is a nice comparison over how nice and summery specifically pebble brain is, versus that drama that are you alright reminds me of thnks fr th mmrs
dream’s music in particular i enjoy not because of its genre, but because of the lyrics; it’s something i’d honestly compare to my chemical romance. i’m pretty sure gerard way has said something about art being therapy while music being something else i forgot, but the opposite seems true for dream. dream himself may not be the soul reason i get into... whatever genre he’s supposed to be (i’m very genre blind i only know rock and not-rock), but i really enjoy how he views lyrics as a therapy the same way gerard views his art as therapy. i’m pretty dramatic, considering my favorite lion king song was “not one of us” and the entire essay i’ve linked above, so i do wanna hear more of what dream can say only through music. i’ve heard gerard sing about relationships under the guise of throwing your new wife’s dead body down a well, getting shot in the desert, making a deal with the devil just to have a chance to see your wife one last time. i wanna know more about a nostalgic roadtrip dream’s taken, about his personal struggles with his neurodivergency, and absolutely more stuff like change my clothes. change my clothes hit extremely hard to me when it first came out because it was near the first time i’ve ever cleaned my room in my entire life; it hurt knowing the dusty plushies on the wall could’ve been taken out in just one day, that i could’ve freed up so much space and made my room look SO MUCH MORE presentable if i just had that push to do so throughout the years i’ve had my own room.
it makes me happy to see that wilbur and dream clearly respect one another, with even dream looking to wilbur for music opinions, because i really do enjoy their music from the sound of the rock-y genre to the lyrics of people just trying to get through life

Hey! Are you currently in uni/ college? I’m just looking for any kind of motivation during all of this happening 😅🥺
hello! yes !! i am currently in my last year of college (though the school system works a bit differently than most where i live)! i TOTALLY feel u! this year was ‘supposed to be’ THE GRIND for me! i was gonna study super hard, work crazy hours and apply for a visa to go move out to live in NYC next year! now, without knowing if any of that is possible (and honestly: not knowing if that’s even what i want anymore??) i’m lacking such motivation. on top of that, i 100% recognize that i’m in such a fortunate and comfortable position at this time and that people are struggling much much worse! this should motivate me but somehow makes going to school online feel even stupider!! it’s honestly making me question the trajectory i want my life to take because why am i here if not to help people??? but many of the seemingly practical ways to help people are through corrupt systems in which i want no part?? CONFUSING. for now i’m dedicated to putting what i can in mutual aid funds & highlyyy recommend that if you even have $5 to pop in every now and then that you do. this feels like the future. IN ANY CASE. motivation for studying online (i’m assuming this is the sitch). it can be tricky. my tips are probably the most basic ones you’ve seen over and over but here goes:
MAKE YOURSELF A REGULAR SCHEDULE. set a wake-up alarm for the same time every day. if you find it hard to not just hit snooze, get ur early bird friend to call u up in the morning and chat to u as they get ready until u can secure the caffeine. 😂 but fr, alarms are ur best friend. u can use them to schedule in break time, work periods... and u can use your agenda to mark down days off, due dates, etc. try to estimate how long each project/reading will take you and allot specific times of the day for it. really try to hold yourself accountable! or find a friend to check in on your progress!
GET READY EVERY MORNING. you probably don’t feel as motivated to work in your pyjamas. put on clothes you’d go to a job interview in. doll yourself up if you need to! you’ll feel so much more prepared to work!! (+ if you wear slightly uncomfortable things like jeans, if you’re like me, you’re much less likely to laze around)!
WORK ANYWHERE BUT YOUR BED. set up your station at a desk, your kitchen table, your kitchen counter or in even in a bathtub!! literally ANYWHERE but your bed or a couch. separate your work space and rest space as much as you can. i know this is not always easy (personally, my desk is not even a meter away from my bed and they’re against opposing walls... but do your best!)
MAKE TIME TO BE SOCIAL. you don’t have to go out to a pandemic party in your spare time, but taking a minute to facetime your friend or go chat to your sister or literally have a conversation with the person at the post office (u.s. pals pls support the USPS if u can) will help your mood and motivation immensely. study in silence over facetime with friends. take 3 seconds to scroll through the meme group chat that you’re part of. it’s about the little things 💗
BE ACTIVE. you don’t have to run a marathon, or even follow a chloe ting ab workout (although 10/10 would recommend i actually love that workout!). if you just take 40 seconds to do some jumping jacks in between classes or while the teacher is lecturing and you cannoootttttt sit still anymore, this can boost your mood! it can help you be able to concentrate better and also helps your blood circulation (every 20 mins you should get up and walk around for a bit ideally)!
KEEP YOUR STATION TIDY. don’t clutter your space with things if you can avoid it. computer, headphones, notepad, literary texts/textbook, paper, pencil, eraser, sharpener, pen, whiteout. BOOM. done. that’s it. (well, maybe except for coffee/water/tea, which, btw, i’d recommend keeping in a bottle or thermos that you can lock so that u can avoid frying your technology!!) everything else can be stowed away somewhere and pulled out when needed. if you’re in art school or some other program where things can get messy, create a system that makes all your materials accessible but not immediately in the way. (also, as someone with a very tiny space, i’m here to tell u there is ALWAYS a way to do this!!! & it’s ok to ask for help!!! if your space is not conducive for work? borrow a few screws and a screwdriver or a nail and hammer from ur neighbor! get a lil plank of wood from the store or the side of the road or someone you know and bang a shelf into your wall! or grab moving boxes from a buddy and stack em in your corner to make a storage space! there’s always a way.)
USE. AN. AGENDA. i think i already touched on this one but HONEY if u don’t have an agenda or a calendar WHAT ArE You DoInG???? once, i didn’t have enough money to buy one, so i literally paid 2$ for colourful construction paper at the dollar store, drew the dates in and stapled one together. there is not really any excuse to not have one! you can use the back pages of your unfinished third grade math notebook! it doesn’t matter! you just need a space to write things down because this is probably one of THE most essential tools for staying motivated (writing down ur goals) and staying on track (writing in due dates, etc.)!! u can watch cute bullet journal videos and fill it with stickers if that motivates u! or do what i did this year and buy one that’s way expensive so that u feel bad about how much money u spent and therefore HAVE to use it 😂 whatever works for u!
JOURNAL. this may sound kind of irrelevant, but i found that i was SO much more motivated to go to online school when i had a space to just let out all my negative emotions towards it. in my journal, i would dump out all my feelings of disdain towards doing theatre school online and missing my friends...so then when it actually came to school, i was pretty much over it and was just excited to see them and my teachers (even tho it was just virtually!)
maybe u weren’t asking for advice lol but i felt like going OFF!! 😂 if anyone has tips for motivation/success at online school in this wild global pandemic era we’re living in reblog and add em! we can make this a cute little chain!! hope you’re all taking care! i believe in u and u r going to do AMAZING this school year i feel it ✨💞

Smokey brand Movie Reviews: Full Shares
I have one helluva backlog of films to work through but, between those and other distractions, i am having just the dickens of a time getting through them. I’ve started Uncut Gems three different times but the tension, man, it stresses me out way too much. I have to take breaks in between and just forget about where i left off so i need to start over. I have to say, though, the twenty to thirty minutes i have seen is absolutely excellent. In the meantime, while i muster enough nerve to actually finish that film, i wanted to revisit one of my all-time favorites. Way back when i first saw this movie, it gave me the same intense, stressed out, panic i feel watching Gems. Alien changed the way that I interacted with film and, to this day, it’s one of maybe a handful of movies to ever illicit true fear from me. I saw it, for the first time as a young kid of maybe six or seven, in a late night showing on TV and i remember even the broadcast edit spazzing me the f*ck out. Imagine my apprehension seeing the theatrical cut fr the first time a few years later. As i got older and learned to appreciate the moving parts of film individually, i came to love Alien even more. Not only is it actually terrifying. it’s one of the best built movies i have ever seen and carries the template for bad-ass film like a badge of honor. Cats say the sequel, which i’ll get to in a later review, is better than the first, but i wholeheartedly disagree. This movie is easily top three all-time for me and here’s why. I have to tell you from the outset, this movie is perfect in my opinion. There are no flaw so don’t expect any negative, just me gushing about the excellence within.
The Outstanding
The very best aspect of this movie is easily Sigourney Weaver’s portrayal as Ellen Ripley. My goodness, was this character absolutely amazing. When people think of Ripley, they often remember Cameron’s version of her from Aliens. To most people, Ripley is that chick, strapped down in a power loader, calling the Queen Xenomorph a b*tch to her face. That is, undeniably, iconic. Ellen Ripley solidified the template for strong, female, lead with that scene. But Ripley didn’t start out that way. She had to earn that title and it began with her battle for survival in the original Alien. Ripley began as an undermined, kind of by-the-book, Warrant Office, just trying to get back in time for her daughter’s eleventh birthday. Over the course of two hours, we watched Ripley evolve into the absolute unit that she is known for and the nuanced portrayal of that evolution by Weaver shows us the harrowing journey with an almost visceral vulnerability. Ellen Ripley is not a character, she is a person. You feel for this woman and her struggle. You root for her. You gasp when she fails. You want her to survive. To get attached to a film character so completely is testimony to the excellence of that actor’s performance and Sigourney Weaver turns one in for the ages. Not bad for a twenty-year-old’s second film appearance, first speaking role.
You can’t speak about Alien without the iconic imagery provided by the nightmares of H.R. Giger’s art. The raw, horrifyingly sexual, disgustingly organic, yet wholly bizarre vestiges of the LV-426 hive were incredible. That initial pan of the fossilized Space Jockey fused to his pilot’s seat can’t help but inspire very real awe. I imagine seeing that reveal on an Imax screen and it is absolutely riveting. More so, entering into the hive itself, wit all those corridors woven from steel and flesh, leading into the pitfall trap full of the waiting, legitimately alien eggs illicit a feeling of primal terror. Those things are nothing like anything terrestrial. They are just familiar enough to inspire curiosity from the audience but uncanny enough to trigger apprehension. Absolutely brilliant but the true genius, the source of constant panic, belongs to the adult xenomorph, itself.
Big Chap, as the production team called it, was a miracle of effects work. The suit was custom built to fit the near seven foot frame of Bolaji Badejo but it was his physicality that lent an organic presence to the techno-organic monstrosity. That original Xenomorpgh was wildly terrifying to me. Even at my young age, i weathered Freddy Krueger, Michael Myers, and Jason Voorhees, with rather stoic aplomb but the Xenomorph sent me into a panic. I had legitimate nightmares about this thing which had never happened before. Giger had created a creature of such instinctual terror that you has no choice by to fear it and that sh*t is amazing.
I touched on how excellent Ellen Ripley was as a character, giving well deserved credit to Weaver’s portrayal but, like all classic characters in storytelling, Ripley began on the page. The writing for Alien is some of the best i have ever had the pleasure of experiencing. Every character, every scene, every aspect, of this story is tight. Dan O’Bannon deserves all credit for this classic script. He wrote a story filled with characters and suspense, never identifying male of female unless absolutely necessary. I miss when films were films and not soapboxes for gender politics. It’s amazing how timeless and iconic characters can become when you’re not trying to push a goddamn agenda.
Now, O’Bannon’s script is excellent but it took a true visionary to bring it to life. Ridley Scott was that creative. Alien was Scott’s second directorial effort and he was able to craft a visual narrative far beyond what his tangible experience would dictate. Scott is a true visionary. The way he saw O’Bannon’s script was incredible. I mean, the vistas of the Derelict Ship, the sanitized halls of the Nostromo, that whole retro-futuristic look, the abject terror and repugnant reversal of sexuality with the Alien; All of that is Scott. O’Bannon gave this man one helluva blueprint but Scott built a goddamn monument of cinema in his own right.
The sound design in this film is absolutely classic. The hisses from the alien, the clacking of the computers, that harrowing voice from MOTHER during the adrenaline packed climax; Every sound, echo, pitch, and clank is perfectly administered to embellish the hellish visuals onscreen. I’ll never forget the first time seeing Brett’s death scene. The subtle sway of chains giving way to the impactful sound of those water droplets hitting his face, lulling you into a false sense of security, only to see the Xenomorph puncture his skull. That mixture of screams and rattling chains was haunting, brilliant use of sound for a horror set piece and testament to it’s voracity.
I spoke at length about Sigourney Weaver’s casting and performance but literally everyone is outstanding in this film. being an original script, not based on any existing media, you had an open template to create these characters. In a sense, casting for this type of project is even more tantamount than building a cinematic adaption of a novel or comic. This film is going to be known for these characters, for this world, going forward and Alien nailed this sh*t. Aside from Weaver’s star-turning performance as Ripley, John Hurt turned in a rather endearing outing as Kane, the first victim of the Xenomorpgh. Tom Skerritt was probably the biggest name in the film so everyone thoight that his character Dallas would be the lone survivor. Nope. Veronica Cartwright’s Lambert was woefully unraveled, specially during the Chestburster scene and Ian Holm’s Ash is easily unnerving his uncanny valley-esque performance. Harry Dean Stanton’s Brett was a man of few words but my second favorite performance in this entire film belongs to Yaphet Kotto. His portrayal as the aggressive, outspoken, incredibly loyal, Parker, endures to this day. These characters are all incredibly written and skillfully performed, bringing characters to life that will endure through time.
This movie came out in 1979, man! It is four decades old an can still give anything created today, even with out advances in effects work and film techniques, a run for it’s money. That is testament to the deft hand and expert precision in the construction of this movie. It’s rare that a film can be so timeless and it’s easily the first i have ever seen to capture that high mark. There are others like that; Jurassic Park, Twelve Angry Men, Jaws, The Godfather, To kill a Mockingbird, Star Wars, but even those classics show chinks in the armor. Not Alien. That Retro-futuristic design is absolutely timeless and fits in with any era of cinema.
The world Alien created was ripe for elaboration. The franchise, alone, produced three sequels; Each an amazing look at different film styles, directorial vision, and cinematic genre. Aliens is arguably one of the greatest sequels ever and has a completely different tone that the first. Some would ay it’ even better than the first. I wouldn’t but others do. There have been books, comics, games, and so much more based on this world. Alien: Isolation is easily the best game ever made based on the franchise and it stars that eleven-year-old daughter turned adult woman, Amanda Ripley, in a similar situation as her mother. Let me tell you, bad-assery must run in the family because Amanda was just as dope as her mom during her own gauntlet. And just like her ma’s adventure, Amanda’s outing stressed me out to no end. I loved the Earth War comic growing up and the introduction of Ripley 8 was something special. She was kind of ridiculous in the fourth film, Alien; resurrection but the comics did 8 much better justice. Speaking of artificial constructs, i would be remiss if i didn’t mention the absolutely charming android Xenomorph, Norbert, and his predecessor, Jeri, but my favorite hybrid is definitely Eloise. That’s not to mention the excellent stories with in the Aliens versus Predator mythos. I’m not going to get too heavy into that lore but you’d be hard-pressed to find a more amazing, female protagonist, outside of Ripley, than Machiko Noguchi; The human Japanese woman, blooded by the Elite Leader Yautja, Broken Tusk, given the title of Little Knife by the space-faring Predators. Ma is a f*cking machine and it’s a crime AvP ignored her story for what we eventually got in cinemas. Hell, there are even aspect of the Prometheus portion of this universe that i like, even though i don’t particularly like the film, itself. Elden is a dope character with a ton of potential for the overall lore going forward. There is so much excellent material in the Aliens expanded universe; Characters, concepts, worlds and more. The expansive nature and reverence for this universe rivals that of Star Wars, none of which could be possible without the inspired execution of the original Alien film.
The Verdict
What can i say? Alien is a goddamn masterpiece. From the second those titles slowly manifest to the exploration of LV-426, to the claustrophobic panic of the Nostromo, to Ripley’s triumphant yet uncertain fate in the end, i absolutely adore every aspect of this movie. Everything about this movie is deliberate and amazing. The performances are all excellent, everyone does an exceptional job. The set design is gorgeous and in the case of the alien hive within the Space Jockey’s ship, disgustingly beautiful. Giger’s art as perfect for this film but his design for Big Chap, the original Xenomorph design, was absolutely unnerving. The first time i saw it onscreen, i was both enthralled and horrified. To see the massive beast, in the few glimpses you got between some of the most excellent lighting ever captured on film, was incredible. There are shortcomings, sure, all films have them but i don’t believe them to be a negative. The pacing can be a little dragging at times but it’s absolutely necessary to build atmosphere. I thrive on slow burn films like The VVitch or Blade Runner 2049 and it was Alien that taught me patience in film can be a virtue. I cannot praise this film enough. For me, Alien is as close to perfect as can be. This easily gets my highest recommendation. If you’ve never seen Alien and appreciate sheer psychological terror, beautiful sets, brilliant direction, awe inspiring shots, and some of the best sound design ever captured on film, you’ll love this movie.

(part 18 of ?; first; previous; next)
They went on, down through the rough, channeled terrain at the mouth of the valley, down onto the icy strip of land that lay between the hills and the sea. There was no path here, no markers of any kind, and Katherine wondered how far she was from the place where she’d come ashore. Finally, as the twilight glow on the horizon had begun to fade, Ælfric started walking a little faster, moving with more purpose. Katherine had the feeling they were getting close to their destination.
They rounded a rocky outcrop that jutted up through the ice and snow, a big dark shoulder of the land; and on the other side, framed against the dark sky, was an immense shape. Katherine couldn’t make heads or tails of it at first; it was too top-heavy to be a hill. As they got closer, she realized it was the hull of a ship. A pretty big one, to be all alone out here on the shore, maybe two hundred meters from one end to the other. When they were close enough for their lanterns to cast light on it, she saw white-painted walls, streaked with dark rust; great big holes in the side, some clearly made by hands scavenging steel, some, perhaps, the result of reefs or weathering. Katherine paused near the bow, and lifted her lantern-staff up, trying to make out the markings high above her head. WINC- -R was all she could read.
“Come,” Ælfric said. He led her along the keel of the bent-over ship, until they came to a crack at ground level that seemed to go all the way up to the top; it was big enough for several people to walk abreast into. She could see stars through it. It ran all the way through the ship, as though it had been ripped in half. They went in, and Katherine found the ruin provided a decent shelter against the the constant shore-wind. It was actually pretty peaceful inside. But the looming darkness overhead did unnerve her a little.
“Be careful,” Ælfric said. “Stay close. This place is old; it is dangerous.”
But he went confidently forward; he seemed to know the path. They did not go up; they walked through what must have been the cargo hold, until they came at last to the far end of the stern. Old crates and pieces of debris littered the ground here; the floor beneath them was ripped away, exposing ice-free, stony ground. Ælfric leaned his staff against a bulkhead, then went to a big bowl-shaped thing in the middle of the space; Katherine couldn’t see what he was doing at first, and then a fire roared to life, beating back some of the darkness. Ælfric dragged a crate a little closer to the brazier, then sat down on it, stretching his legs out in front of him and letting out a long breath. He suddenly looked rather tired. The bright firelight threw the lines of his weather-beaten face into deep relief. He motioned for Katherine to sit, too.
“Is this ship what you wanted to show me?” Katherine asked.
“Almost. Not yet,” was all Ælfric said. He took some jerky from his pack, and tore it in half; they ate together in silence for a few minutes. Then Ælfric stood, and walked to the very back of the room. Katherine followed.
There, where the ragged, torn bulkhead met the ground, there were seven long, low mounds scraped in the dirt. Above them, on the steel plate, gouged into the surface, were drawings. Faces, animals, words. Words, Katherine suddenly realized, she could read without effort, words in English. The largest were names and numbers. Dates, actually. Katherine realized she was looking at graves.
“What is this place?”
“Look,” Ælfric said. “Read.”
Katherine read. ALFRED ROBERTS. 2175-2229. Of Milwkee, Wisc. Even after all other dfficulties, our dparture ws delayd--the govt of NZ refused at 1st to give us permission, saying they did nt wish to be rsponsible fr our rescue. Dspite our assurance, tht we neither dsired nor needed thr assistance, they hindered us 4 weeks. Then very bad weather; we cd not set sail. JULIA TOAL. 2182-2222. Dparted 8th May, far later thn hoped. Winter closing quickly. Too late in summer by far. Bt we were unanimous; would nt wait another year. Wd accept any difficulty, for wht we wished to accomplish. PERRY MILLER. 2160-2219.
It was a record of a journey, interspersed with names and years. There were many more names here than just seven; if these were dates of birth and death, all these people had died frightfully young.
Ælfric pointed to the first name. “Ælfræd, son of Lawrence. His son was Ælfwine; Ælfwine’s daughter was Ælfgyfu; Ælfgyfu’s daughter was Ælfsteorra; Ælfsteorra was my mother. He is my ancestor.”
“What happened here?”
Ælfric looked at Katherine, puzzled. “What do you mean?”
“These dates.” Katherine pointed at the first few names. “Dates of death?”
“Yes. Ælfræd died in the tenth year. Julia, in the third. Perry, in the first.”
“They were not old.”
Ælfric cocked his head. “This land makes old men of the young. It carries off the child and the father and mother alike. The first years here were the hardest of all.”
“But there are only seven graves here.”
“No.”
Ælfric took his lantern-staff up, and pointed it down, back the way they had come. In the brighter light of the fire, Katherine could see that this was not the only bare patch of ground here in the cargo hold; the floor had been pulled up in even intervals, down along the length of the ship, all the way back to the place they had entered from. There were more than forty more graves here.
“These were men and women honored among us,” Ælfric said, indicating the seven graves they now stood next to. “But many gave their lives in the landtaking. It was not easy. Few had dared to try to make a home in this land of winters before we came. None tried for a long time after. It seems, from all you have told us, that they even forgot we were here.”
“You must have come during troubled times.” Katherine looked at the dates again. “Right in the middle of the Collapse. You might have even been alone here for many decades.” Katherine had done a bit of research on the history of the continent before she came. Amundsen-Scott had closed right around the turn of the century; McMurdo had lasted only a decade or so longer. For most of the 23rd century, the only human presence in Antarctica had been a few Chilean and Argentinian bases on the Peninsula, a desultory claim to what everybody thought of as a worthless patch of ice, held on to more for reasons of national pride than anything else.
The hundred years or so from the middle of the 22nd century to the middle of the 23rd had not been a good time for anybody. For various reasons, the whole human race at once had seemed to find itself in the middle of a dark forest, with no clear way forward. A vision of the future that it had carried with it, in one form or another, for centuries, the vision of steady (if not monotonic) forward progress, the vision of hope, the vision of a world they could make better eventually (even if they did not know how just at the moment) had absented itself. And instead, for a long time, nations started looking inward. Governments feared to look weak, feared to rely on their neighbors, feared that expressing hope for peace and prosperity made them seem naive. Instead, they seemed to decide, now was the time for all the serious people to admit, once again, that struggle was the real truth of existence.
It wasn’t that civilization fell. The Collapse was a fairly dramatic name for the period, albeit one that had stuck, because to many of the people living through it, it did feel like the end of the world. What it had really been was a series of political and economic shocks. Even throughout that entire century, the world had not stayed still. There was new art, new technology, new ambitions, if you knew where to look. But the tenor of the era was one of paranoia, nativism, and tyranny. Katherine’s own homeland had spent the better part of it under a series of right-wing dictatorships. Other parts of the world--India, China, Japan--had fared much worse.
It had broken, like a fever ending, in the 2250s. There were lots of reasons: advancements in technology and medicine, and the economic revolutions of the global south finally ended the endless series of shocks and recessions that had plagued the world. Geoengineering finally stabilized the climate. Some even said the real credit went to the artistic revolutions of the era. That it stopped being unfashionable to dream again, to imagine what a utopian future could look like. And all that long darkness--and all the time before it--had been repressed. Not forgotten, exactly. But you didn’t like to dwell on it. That was the dark ages. Nevermind that it had not been all that dark. That many millions had lived and struggled (and wept and laughed) in that time, that it was a time as suffused with human life as any. It was painful to think about. And so, few people did. Katherine was just as guilty of that as anybody. Why trap yourself in the past, when there is a bright and endless future ahead of you?
“Why did they come here, Ælfric? If it was going to be so hard?”
Ælfric gave Katherine… a look. She wasn’t sure what kind of look. Like he was sizing her up. Or nailing her down.
“You survived.”
“What?”
“You survived. You are a survivor.”
“I don’t understand.”
Ælfric nodded, more to himself than anything. “Mæwstan found you on the shore, three days from here, after you had walked God alone knows what distance; we found the rest of your ship some days later, and the crew. They were all dead. Killed by the storm that marooned you here, or by the freezing sea. You should not have lived.”
“I’m not baseline, like you. I have, uh,” Katherine searched for the word, “I have improvements. Machines, in my body.”
“Your machinae have not functioned since you came here.”
Katherine stiffened, startled. “How do you know that?”
“I have watched you. You have suffered fatigue, soreness, pain. You have eaten with us, eaten our food, and had pains in your gut.” Well, that was embarassing. No, the food had not always agreed with her. “You have slept badly. The long nights, they make you depressed. Anxious. I have watched you closely, outlander Katherine. You have endured what few outlanders would endure, or could. I have noticed. Also, Leofe told me.
“I was wrong to want you exiled. In my defense, I did not think it would be your death, not truly. Perhaps it was wishful thinking. Perhaps I wished to absolve myself of that guilt. But I really thought that one who had walked the ice from the northern shore would find a way to survive, even if we turned her out of our hearths. But that was wrong. Even if it were true, you did not deserve that, and I am sorry.”
He said it flatly, like he was simply observing a fact of nature. The ice is cold. Penguins like to swim. I was wrong to try to have you killed. Katherine resisted the urge to give him a hug.
“It is the prejudice of my people that all outlanders are weak of spirit. That they do not know what they live for, and so they do not know how to fight for it. Perhaps it is not so. Perhaps some of you are strong. Leofe also said you are not like the other outlanders; that you come from a people apart even in your homeland. A people who have not forgotten their past, and so are not wholly of the present. If that is so, I see now why John sent you to us. You alone, perhaps, could understand.
“So understand this. Our foremothers and our forefathers came here because they could do nothing else. Those were grim years in the countries they hailed from. Years of dark hearts, years of narrow sight. Years in which the troubles of the world pressed in on them, hard like a prison, from which they could not escape.
“This--” and he gestured at the carved steel surfaces around them “--this is the annals of the first years of our people. It is written also in our books, but I wanted you to see with your own eyes, how it was at the beginning. The letters we carved into the hard metal and the graves we scratched into the hard ground. Because in the hardness is a lesson.
“They were not hard people, not at the beginning. We do not prize hardness of heart. We are not cruel, whatever--whatever our failings may sometimes be. We do not value cruelty. Because we would not be cruel, because we would not admit the darkness into our hearts, because we would not surrender, we could not remain. Perry, Julia, Alice, the others buried here, they kept a jewel hidden in their breasts, a jewel which burned like fire, a jewel which even in the long darkness to which no Antarctic winter can compare, warmed them and gave them purpose.
“They wanted a place where they could be themselves. Where they could, despite the purposes of other men and women, build a community of the heart. But how could they do that? The world was crowded and claimed, with high walls at every turn. They were few in number. There was only one place where the laws and walls did not run.”
“Antarctica?”
Ælfric nodded.
“The land of many winters. They bought a ship. They gathered all the things they needed; they expected much hardship. Even so, it was harder. But they fared forth, came to these icy shores, and sought a refuge here.”
“You make it sound almost religious.”
“The separation of the religious from the secular is a contrivance of your world, Katherine. We do not have a religion you would recognize, but yes, we are religious in our fashion. And we do not separate that from the other elements of our life.”
“You make it sound like you’re primitivists. Some kind of intentional throwback.”
“Ha!” Ælfric seemed to be genuinely amused by this. “That because we speak a dead tongue, we wish to recreate a dead people? A dead culture? Do you think we are Angles in spirit? Playing at the ancient world?”
“You live a difficult life. Not unlike the people who spoke your tongue before.”
“Our foremothers and forefathers did choose this tongue for a reason--but it was not because they fancied themselves ancient folk of Britain. I don’t think any of them were even English.
“They chose it because it had been forgotten. The study of the past was deeply unfashionable in their day. I gather, from your ignorance, it has grown only more so since they set out. They wanted a language that they could make their own. And they wanted a language they could give to the voiceless land that they chose to inhabit. We spoke of names before, yes? They wanted a new tongue for their landscape, both the landscape around them and the landscape within themselves. They sought a new understanding of what was possible for them. They sought something the world around them lacked--hope.”
“And they needed a new language to find that?”
“Or an old one. A language from a time when, as then, the world seemed to be dreary, and speeding towards its end. A language from a time when the people huddled together on a cold island surrounded by the deep, dark sea, and wondered what lay beyond it. A language from a time when we knew what value the knowledge of the past held, and we husbanded every little scrap of it, fearful to lose the meagerest portion, lest we forget it was possible to hope for a better future. We, of course, do not look to Christ for our salvation, as they did. We find it in different places. But we find it.”
“The world has changed, you know. It’s not half so dark, or half so dreary. It’s been a long time since the time of your forefathers and foremothers. Why do you stay here, where life is hard, where you have to struggle to survive? Why not rejoin the world?”
“We would not lose ourselves.”
“The world is a big place. It has room enough for you.”
Ælfric shook his head. “Not for us. You are too optimistic. You do not understand. Our tale does not end with our arrival on these shores. It does not end with our move from the wreck to the Valleys. It does not end with our adoption of the Tongue, and our building of the fanes. You do not yet understand. Maybe you will, in time. But not yet.”
With that, as if Katherine had somehow transgressed, Ælfric’s urge to speak seemed to end. He sat quietly, staring into the fire, leaving Katherine to peruse the writings on the wall on her own. So she read. She read the record of the first years of the Dry Valleys People, read the records of their deaths and their griefs, the records of the things that had driven them forth, and of the hope they retained, even when it seemed to her they had little enough to hope for. The cramped, telegraphic style of the language only got more so as it went along, and then it began to lapse into the new tongue, and then it ended; and when it did, Katherine looked back at Ælfric. He was asleep now, wrapped up in a bedroll close to the fire. Katherine suddenly realized just how tired she was, and using her pack as a pillow, lay down next to him. She closed her eyes, listening to the rushing of the wind through the bones of the old ship, and before she knew it, she was asleep, and dreaming of the sea.

From this webpage on Lingq: https://www.lingq.com/fr/forum/open-forum/from-your-experience-how-many-hours-of-listeningreading-should-take-one-to-start-to-feel-he-can-listenread-almost-anything-wi/
Everything user [Yaser2020] mentions is fascinating to think about. They wrote, regarding the topic of how many hours of listening/reading it takes to get fluent in a target language:
It depends on how far the language you aim to learn (the target language ) from your language, for example Turkish has many words common with Arabic and French, so it will be easy for Arabic and French guy to learn Turkish than another person.
But until now, and what I heard that the minimum time is 90 hours, and it depends on your attitude and understanding of the grammar of the language, because sometimes the ignorance of grammar consume time.
third it depends on the material you study and how it is suitable to you.

And you should know that there is something called fluency and proficiency
Reading
Fluent: A fluent reader will likely understand any basic short text without a lot of specialized vocabulary, but would be lost when attempting to read a book or newspaper, especially ones that discuss a single topic in-depth.
For example, I would myself fluent in Russian, to the level that most people I speak with believe that I have Russian parents, or some other intimate contact with native speakers. Despite this, I still struggle when reading a newspaper or a book.
Proficient: A proficient reader has all the literacy of an educated native speaker. He or she can understand complex texts meant for a general audience—like books and newspapers—but also is capable of digesting specialized texts in a few key areas of interest.
Listening
Fluent: A fluent listener understands most of what he hears, but often has to piece together the meaning of more complex utterances by relying on individual keywords.
Proficient: A proficient listener has a near-automatic understanding of anything he hears. There is no mental backtracking or inference needed to parse difficult utterances. Proficient listeners can understand many of the most difficult media for listening, including music, movies, comedy, and news broadcasts.
http://www.thepolyglotdream.com/b-to-c-1/
So your first goal is to reach the fluency.
I realized reading this, I seem to be aiming for proficiency in reading and somewhere between fluent and proficiency (probably eventual proficiency) for listening. I am also realizing by this definition I may already be fluent in reading chinese... I can at least read a news article for main idea, tv show subtitles I understand without issue without a dictionary now (unless its a period drama then there might be some lines full of specialized vocab I haven’t picked up yet or fully poem lines/idioms I haven’t picked up yet - but I’ll still grasp the main ideas in the episode). I can pick up most books on topics I’m familiar with (crime, tomb raiding, modern daily life, supernatural, some republican era provided its time period but not heavily political vocab) and read for gist main idea (it greatly depends on novel difficulty on if I can read it extensively for a majority of details though). also, books with english names transliterated I struggle particularly extra with, whereas I find recognizing chinese names in novels much easier (and easier in listening to audiobooks).
I can read general weibo posts fine, provided they aren’t on a specific topic I am not familiar with (so I can read entertainment news, fandom posts, art posts, short manhua on there, but if I see a post on like music playing of specific instruments or on a specific region’s food i may only grasp ‘about music playing instrument thing in general’ or ‘about some kind of food’, so its kind of a coin toss if I understand a weibo post Outside of my usual feed since I’m only really familiar with topics I usually read about/modern daily life stuff - business stuff about stocks/economy especially screws me up because i only grasp ‘this is economics related’ which is also an area in cdramas I just do NOT know most of the words lol). I do not have much issue chatting with people through text about fandom (cause we both know the names/show terms), their hobbies (I might not know a specific word if they go in depth past some basic sports/cooking/traveling/art/hair dying etc but usually people don’t go in depth at first), their city, their general life.

As we get ready for Transparent 3 (which will officially open June 1st), we just thought it would be a nice reminder to look at all the great selections from Transparent 2.
So these next few nights we'll run the selections, finalists and winners clips every other night.
Barring another pandemic, global power outage or alien invasion, Transparent 3 will take place in NYC at The Producer's Club Thursday April 8th through 10th. One of the programs will be The Winners From 2020.
Here's how it unfolded. Thanks again for you support.

If Devo were formed in Ibiza today it might sound like this.... https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=INn8c_n-FW0 May 20, 2020, 2:38 AM Transparent Film Festival updated their status. THE WINNERS - AND WRAP UP
The judges have made their decisions. I will acknowledge my own favorites in another post.
There are 2 or 3 films across all categories that are worthy of "Winner" status. This is also true in all three Best Director, Best Actor and Best Actress categories.
One fact is indisputable. Features carry more weight than shorts in the decision making process because it's harder to maintain excellence for a longer period of time.
We would love to see more features, as well as follow up episodes in the TV Pilot Category. We will be providing a waiver/discount code for filmmakers who submit a second episode to Transparent 3 (2021).
Over this next year, we will continue to build out our streaming channel (TransparentFilmFestival.com). It's a great time to join if you haven't already. So support us as we promote the best in True Indie.
Our weekly show, Transparent Film Festival Presents will be expanding to new television markets.
Thank you all for the kind reviews. It was an amazing year despite the inherent challenges we all faced.

May 5, 2020, 12:01 PM Transparent Film Festival updated their status. IMPORTANT UPDATE:
We have just had confirmation that New York City will not be reopening for "Phase 2" (meaning bars and nightclubs), before at best, June 15. Accordingly, that precludes us from putting on a live screening this year.
The winning films as well as Best Director, Best Actor and Best Actress will be announced on the next episode of Transparent Film Festival Presents (Friday night May 8th) at 9pm EST.
A program will be added to Transparent 3 (April 2021) that will include the winners from Transparent 2 (this year's festival). All winners from Transparent 2 will be included at the Transparent 3 Awards Ceremony.
Let's hope these assholes don't find a way to kill us all before then. Keep making art... or die trying.

Apr 23, 2020, 11:49 AM Transparent Film Festival updated their status. Just to give you an idea of what we’re dealing with on almost a daily basis.... An email from someone who hasn’t been following since October...
"...Have any films dropped out by any chance? We would love to screen. Has the festival been canceled? I’d still love to know why the movie wasn’t accepted. Between the 20 best picture awards we’ve already won and (they name drop a TV show) coming to an end and our lead actor being the star of (they name drop the same TV show) (and all over the media right now), I’m trying to understand the logic..."
Our response is this... Just so there’s no confusion...
We don’t care who you know, how many awards you won, how many people could “pack our screenings”, etc. We don’t need to explain our logic to you. We screen every film from beginning to end, let you know when we watched it and post screen grabs. The films make it to a second round and then go to our judges (who have Emmys and Grammys - one had an Oscar but he died), and they make the decisions not the festival organizers.
As far as when the finalists will be screened, that’s up to Governor Andrew Cuomo. If that doesn’t happen in May, we will do a show similar to the last one (The Finalists Episode), of Transparent Film Festival Presents the last weekend of May where we will announce the winners.
One final thought. Network Television sucks and all 5 of the TV Pilots in that category are just as good (if not better) than the show you referenced.
Nuff Said. Have a nice day.
Apr 16, 2020, 3:18 PM So you know how we're all sitting around with some extra time to be creative....

We started The Transparent Film Festival because, as filmmakers, we were tired of getting ripped off. Ripped off by “film festivals” collecting submissions fees and sending us a form letter. In many cases, we weren’t even told whether we were accepted or rejected. Sundance (we’ll never bother with that again), had 13,000 submissions in 2018 and maybe a dozen people “to screen them”. Do the math. And factor in features. So our concept was, start a festival, get qualified judges, watch every frame and prove it by showing on Facebook that we watched your film and when, let the filmmakers know what we thought. Here are the best of the best, of the best. In some cases we’re still arguing (Best Short and Best Actress). We’ll keep you in the loop. UPDATE: We have so much news we'd like to share, but we're so busy working that I'll just have to encapsulate a few items. 1. Just got this statistic (photo attached). While many film festivals talk a good game, we deliver. 2. The next episode of Transparent Film Festival Presents (Episode 26) will air Friday night at 9pm EST. The show will feature the two finalists in each category. We can tell you that the choices have been made in all film categories but the SHORTS category where there is an intense debate going on. In Bet Feature, Documentary, Mobile, Foreign, Performance, and Horror - we have narrowed the field. And it was hard!!!! 3. Episode 27 of Transparent Film Festival Presents (Bubble), will feature some of the films that could have easily been selected. They were that good. But we just couldn't select everyone. So this "Honorable Mention" show is for them. 4. We will. be announcing our first writing challenge with a Cash Prize for the winning submission. It involves finishing a script that was half finished. More about that soon. UPDATE: We have so much news we'd like to share, but we're so busy working that I'll just have to encapsulate a few items.

UPDATE SUNDAY NIGHT 12:15 EST
Transparent Film Festival 2020 is coming to a close.
We want to thank everyone for what will surely be a most memorable film festival. We screened every frame of close to 300 films, provided our notes and ratings, and chose the films we thought were the best of the best. Then, the Coronavirus.
We will leave the programs up until 11:59 pm PCT (Pacific) to accommodate all those great films from California and Vancouver.
Tomorrow (Monday), we'll send out an update as to what happens next. We will post here, as well as email everyone.
Again, great job to you all. When FilmFreeway.com as if you want to leave a review, we hope you will.

Apr 4, 2020, 3:02 PM Transparent Film Festival updated their status. Guys it’s simple... click the button. Choose the program you want. Pay for your ticket.
One of the things we’re hearing back is how impressed each of you are - with EVERYONE ELSE that they’re competing against. We’ve given out comps to approximately half the filmmakers. The rest I guess don’t know or didn’t care.
We posted several months ago, that completing your film is only the beginning. Making money and being successful in the business, is a whole ‘nother thing. Interacting with and collaborating with others, learning and teaching others, attending screenings and the film markets and making connections, and so on.
If you think that people are just going to drop out of the sky and love your film, good luck. 😉 However, seeing the methods and techniques utilized by your fellow filmmakers, is alone worth the price of admission. The All Access Subscription for $25 (for a year!!!) is like a semester of film school. That’s how incredible these films are. And they are from all over the world. Especially the foreign films competition, it’s mind-boggling.
You can’t become a successful filmmaker in a vacuum.

Comps for filmmakers are available until midnight. We have someone standing by to accommodate you.

Apr 2, 2020, 9:49 PM Transparent Film Festival updated their status. IMPORTANT UPDATE
We want to thank all of our judges, techs and staff for helping us pull this off at this most difficult time. That's how much we honor all of you.
Several filmmakers have now received their comp to the program in which their film is screening. We have verified with several of you already that the process works. The comps are just that, for you. However, please understand we have excellent analytics.
Anyone trying to use a comp email login from multiple IP addresses, will have their access revoked - and their film removed from the competition.
It takes a lot of time to set this up, for each individual comp. This is why we aren't just automatically adding people unless they requested access. It would take more time than we have, especially with a skeleton staff due to the virus.
As we said in our email to all filmmakers, whose films are screening as part of the festival - YOU MUST REQUEST YOUR COMP BY MIDNIGHT TONIGHT (EST - NYC Time).
Now for a bit of bad news.
A friend of the festival with whom some of us worked back in November, has died of the Coronavirus. So, there's that.
We will check in again just before the official start of the festival at midnight tonight and make sure every filmmaker who has requested a comp for their program, has one.

5 QUICK FACTS re TRANSPARENT 2020 (COVID-19 Version)
As New York City is on "lockdown", we will continue with our festival online. When restrictions are lifted and it is deemed safe to hold our festival, we will get new dates and hold our live film festival event.
The film festival will take place here: www.transparentfilmfestival.com
Filmmakers please take note:
1. We need your 1920 x 1080 compressed movs or mp4s no later than 5 pm Tuesday to be included in the festival (online). There will be no exceptions. We have to sequence several programs. Programs will be a mix of genres and will time at approximately 3 hours each.
2. Films that screen online will be given priority with respect to the live festival when scheduled. This means that we don't know what's going to happen in the future with the pandemic situation and what we're going to have access to in the future. However, those films that screen this weekend, will be given first consideration if and when the live festival is scheduled.
3. Films that screen online as part of the festival will be uploaded to TransparentFilmFestival.com. After the festival, all films selected and uploaded for the 2020 Transparent Film Festival will be promptly deleted UPON NOTIFICATION BY SUBMITTING FILMMAKER.
4. There will be two types of digital tickets available: The first is per program and the second is for "ALL ACCESS" which will allow for the viewing of all festival content.
5. Each filmmaker taking part in the online festival will receive 1 comp to view the program in which their film is included. To receive your comp access, or if you have any questions at all, please email us at [email protected].

Mar 19, 2020, 8:44 PM Transparent Film Festival updated their status. IMPORTANT UPDATE
Filmmakers please read.
NYC has closed down. We will be most likely postponing the live screenings however, we will screen the selected films online on Friday Night April 3rd and Saturday Night April 4th at the same times as they would have screened.
This will also be the same order that they will screen not if, but WHEN we secure our new dates at the same venue - the Producers Club - which has been paid for in full.
We will also be able to screen additional films that deserve the selection laurels because they are that well produced, but wouldn't have been able to screen live due to time constraints. We were going to get a 3rd day, but then things changed in a hurry.
A good thing is that we will be able to screen more features instead of only when.
We will let you know about new dates (if indeed we need to postpone the live screenings) as soon as the danger from COVID-19 has passed. But for now, all entertainment venues in NYC are closed, and no public gatherings with more than 10 people are permitted. So it's out of our control.
THAT SAID.... we will be airing our Selections Special this Friday night right here on Facebook while doing watch parties with about 20 filmmaking groups at 8PM EST.
It's going to be a great show. Please all of you stay safe.

6 of the films that have been selected for this year's Transparent Film Festival. Music Performance by Hall & Oates. Mar 7, 2020, 1:28 AM Transparent Film Festival updated their status. NOTICE TO ALL FILMMAKERS:
The first selections have been announced.
We keep getting emails from some of you mistakenly thinking that your film has already screened, like in some online festival.
When we do a post about your film, with stills, and a screened on day and date, that is just the proof of our having watched (or “screened”), your film.
What sets us apart from every other festival (and why we are a top 100 festival on Film Freeway), is because we can document when we watched your film. If you want, you can cross reference with Vimeo or YouTube analytics for that day, so you can see we watched your entire film.
Generally, the more screen grabs, the more we liked your film. Though this is not always the case.
The festival itself is on Friday night, April 3rd, and Saturday night April 4 with a party after the Awards Ceremony.
Selections will first be announced on the Friday night March 20 episode of Transparent film Festival presents.
Lastly, if you’re not already, you may want to follow this page. Important information as well as announcements will be posted here especially as we draw closer to the festival.

Okay so..... this is the latest. We've been pretty busy believe it or not, SINCE THE FESTIVAL ENDED! We've been approached by several potential sponsors including one of the large Automobile Manufacturers for Transparent 2020. We're trying our best to get everyone their customized laurels - because you all deserve them. That said... There are some fake Transparent Film Festival Laurels out there so just know - if they don't look like this.... they don't mean anything. Okay so..... this is the latest.

Note to filmmakers- the 60fps won’t work or at 4K.
As it states in the festival description we need 1920 x 1080 at 30fps.
Otherwise your film may sputter. No sputtering allowed.
Inbox me if you think your film fits this description.
Thanks

Mar 3, 2019, 12:11 PM Transparent Film Festival updated their status. Quick heads up. Memorialized here for all to see.
We've received about 1/3 of the downloads so far for the Live Event.
Some filmmakers who were chosen as finalists.... their emails bounced. Others who were chosen as finalists haven't acknowledged their status.
We're going to have a real short leash because everything is about putting on a show now.
Please get your download links at 1920x1080 with reasonable compression by the end of this week at the latest. We need to test on the screen.
If we don't have your downloads soon, we'll pivot to the Semi-Finalists.
