I’ve just rewatched “The Mysterious Island” (1961), based on a novel by French author Jules Verne. It’s set in the 1860s and tells the story of several Union soldiers who escape a Confederate prison via a hot air balloon. A fierce storm transports them to a remote and “mysterious” island in the South Pacific. There they help rescue two women, passengers of a boat that sunk in the same storm.

Things get interesting when they encounter several giant animals on the island - crabs, chickens, and even bees. All of them were achieved via the amazing effects created by Ray Harryhausen and his team. They holdup surprising well for a movie released over 60 years ago. Today, in a similar movie, the effects would be done via CGI. But Harryhausen’s stop motion effect feel so much more fresh and visceral.

The music for the film was done by Bernard Herrmann, Harryhausen’s frequent collaborator. The music is appropriately adventurous and dramatic.

The only effect that doesn’t stand the rest of time is the volcanic eruption at the climax of the film. It’s clearly a model and the lava doesn’t have the “weight” of liquid rocks.

Outdoor scenes were filmed on the Catalan coast in Spain, with indoor filming occurring in England. The overall design is pretty good, especially Captain Nemo’s ship the Nautilus.

The cast is mostly English, with three exceptions. Nemo was played by Czech actor Herbert Lom (best know for playing Inspector Dreyfus in the Pink Panther films); Gary Merrill (who divorced Bette Davis only a year earlier); and Michael Callen, a young actor popular on Broadway and films in the 1960s.

Callen is a prime example of how the perception of men has changed over the years. Callen plays the heart throb and is shirtless in most of the movie. But by today’s standard he looks incredible skinny with no muscle tone.

I particularly like Michael Craig who played the castaways leader. I thought I’d seen him in some old TV westerns but nearly all of his credits are British.

The two women are played by Joan Greenwood as Lady Fairchild and Beth Rogan as her niece Elena. Greenwood has a very artificial sounding voice and I thought her dialogue may have been dubbed over by another actress (it wasn’t). About half way into the movie, Rogan switches from a long dress with petticoats into a very small and revealing leather tunic. It’s so short that her underpants are frequently revealed as she runs across the beach.

I saw “The Mysterious Island” via TUBI, a free streaming service. There were occasional commercial but not as intrusive as broadcast TV.

En tunn månad mina damer och herrar. Vet inte om det beror på semester men jag har haft viss beslutsångest i vilka filmer jag skall se (så det har blivit ett och annat fall ihop med Vera på SVT Play).

Aguirre: Guds vrede / Aguirre, der Zorn Gottes (1972) [__] Intressanta miljöer och karaktärer, och avgjort en relativt bra story som är rotad i verkligheten. Inte fantastisk, kanske svår att rekommendera men heller inte dålig.

Den fantastiska resan till jordens medelpunkt / Viaje al centro de la Tierra (1977) [👍] Kul spansk take på Jules Vernes klassiker. Inte den mest påkostade produktionen men ett solitt äventyr som går sin egen väg.

Den äventyrliga flykten / Escape to Witch Mountain (1975) [👍] Klassisk disneyfilm från början av deras mörka period.

Dredd (2012) [👍🔁] Den bättre av de två Judge Dredd filmer som producerats. Bra rakt igenom, och jag sröjer fortfarande att vi inte fick mer.

France Inc. / France Société Anonyme (1974) [🛑👎] Värdelös fransk science fiction-film inte ens regissören själv vill veta av. Det tar aldrig slut. Märklig story, och när den behöver piffas till slänger man in nakna kroppar, våld och förnedring. Oftast i kombination, oftast kvinnor och alltid utan att kvinnorna protesterar.

Green Knight, the (2021) [👎] Sidospår från Arthur-sagan. Ger vibbar av Tale of Tales. Tråkig.

Heat, the (2013) [👍🔁] Röjjig buddy-cop film. Tåls att se om och om och om igen.

Helt hysteriskt: Filmen / Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie (2016) [👍🔁] Världens två favoritfyllon på äventyr.

Jurassic Predator (2018) [👎] Jag är inte helt säker men större delen av filmen känns det här som om man försöker att aktivt parodiera b-films action med monstertema. Och hade det här varit roligt hade de antagligen kommit undan med det. Nu blir det mest fånigt, tråkigt och slätstruket.

Den Hemlighetsfulla Ön / Mysterious Island (2005) [👍] Hallmarks produktion av en Jules Vernes klassiker. Patrick Stewart.

Robin Hoods Äventyr / Adventures of Robin Hood, the (1938) [👍🔁] Så många fula frisyrer i en och samma film. Men annars är den kanonbra.

Rogue (2020) [__] Såg den för jag främst var nyfiken på Megan Fox i den här filmen. (Hon övertygar inte, men det kan också bero på hennes bagage). Inte dålig, men ooriginell och slätstruken.

Trafic (1971) [👎] Ännu en film som jag vill tillskriva @kulturdasset​. Inte rolig någonstans utan är en räcka incidenter som främst beror på dumt folk som tar dumma beslut. Konkurrerar med förra månades Wacko om titeln som den absolut sämsta komedin jag sett.

Som månadens kanske största överraskning kan jag känna att Den fantastiska resan till jordens medelpunkt är en film väl värd att ge en chans om man finner möjligheten.

Im Mai 1959 kündigte Columbia an, einen Vertrag mit Charles Schneer abgeschlossen zu haben, um neun seiner Filme über drei Jahre zu vertreiben. Die Filme sollten unter anderem "Schlacht im Korallenmeer"(1959), "Die drei Welten des Gulliver"(1960), " Wernher Von Braun"(1960), "Die geheimnisvolle Insel"(1961), "Gentleman of China" und "Air Force Academy" umfassen.

"Die geheimnisvolle Insel" sollte die sechste Zusammenarbeit zwischen Schneer und Ray Harryhausen werden, beginnend mit "Das Grauen aus der Tiefe" (1955), "Fliegende Untertassen greifen an"(1956), "Die Bestie aus dem Weltenraum"(1957) und der dritte in Farbe, nach "Die siebente Reise des Sinbad"(1958) und "Die 3 Welten des Gulliver"(1960). Wie Sinbad und Gulliver sollte der Film in Spanien gedreht.

Das Drehbuch des Films basierte auf dem Roman von Jules Verne, der eine Fortsetzung zu zwei anderen Verne-Romanen war: "In 80 Tagen um die Welt" (1867) und "20.000 Meilen unter dem Meer" (1870). In dem Roman "Die geheimnisvolle Insel" trafen Flüchtlinge nach der Landung ihres Ballons auf der Insel auf viele Abenteuer, trafen auf Tom Ayrton, der auf einer benachbarten Insel gestrandet war, kämpften gegen Piraten und entdeckten, dass Captain Nemo ihr Wohltäter war und die Insel die Basis für die Nautilus war.

Die meisten Schauspieler des Films waren britische Schauspieler. Michael Craig stand bei Rank unter Vertrag, und Michael Callan war zur Zeit bei Columbia unter Vertrag. Percy Herbert wurde ursprünglich aufgrund seines britischen Akzents für die Rolle abgelehnt, erhielt sie aber nachdem er einen südlichen Akzent geübt hatte, indem er "Plötzlich im letzten Sommer" mehrmals anschaute.

Die Dreharbeiten begannen am 21. Juni 1960. Die Strandszenen in "Die geheimnisvolle Insel" wurden am Sa Conca Bay in Castell-Platja d'Aro in Katalonien, Spanien, gedreht. Die Flucht aus dem Konföderierten-Gefängnis - mit einem Beobachtungsballon - wurde auf dem Kirchplatz in Shepperton, England, gedreht. Die Innenräume wurden in den Shepperton Studios fertiggestellt.

Die Stop-Motion-Animations-Effekte wurden von Ray Harryhausen erstellt. Alle Modellwesen außer dem Riesenvogel (der später für "Gwangi's Rache" im Jahr 1969 wiederverwendet wurde) existieren immer noch.

Die Musik des Films wurde von Bernard Herrmann komponiert, der bereits die Musik für zwei frühere Harryhausen- und Schneer-Produktionen ("Die siebente Reise des Sinbad" und "Die 3 Welten des Gulliver") komponiert hatte. Die Musik wurde vom London Symphony Orchestra aufgeführt.

Ray Harryhausen entwickelte die Stop-Motion-Technik seines Lehrers Willis O’Brien zur Perfektion. Stop-Motion war lange Zeit wegweisend für Spezialeffekte beim Film. Harryhausen erweckte damit zahlreiche Fabelwesen, Dinosaurier und Geister auf der Leinwand zum Leben. Weltberühmt wurden unter anderem die Szenen aus den Sindbad-Filmen und die Kampfsequenzen aus Jason und die Argonauten.

First contact

Little Mr. Lodge leads the Little Archie gang Gand gets stranded on a tropical island, where they encounter the Noble Savage trope. But this civilization no longer grabs their children's arms with so much force to cause physical hurt.

Also when they sacrifice visitors to the Sun God, they stop short of seeming to have already killed everyone.

Who is more scared?

Usual conman technology.

"Natives" out. For that matter so is "Americans".

This is an odd choice for new ending, and not especially depicted in the picture. I guess they do not want to leave this civilization stranded in our (Little Archie) universe, so enter the Brigadoon device.
