Happy Birthday to the Chiklets.
For anyone who doesn’t know the chiklets are my Bungou Stray Dogs OCs + Chuuya. I had a dream that Chuuya was one of triplets and then ended up giving them a whole multiverse (there’s a masterlist doc out there with writing and art of all the aus I’ve created for them).
From left to right, Chuuya, the middle child, Chizuru, the oldest, and Chika, the youngest. Chizuru has a gift called ‘Total Mimicry’ through which she can physically mimic a person and if they’re gifted also mimic the basics of their gift. She also gets to see a glimpse into their head. This takes an incredibly emotional and mental toll on her tho. Chika has a gift called ‘Eclipse of The Stars’ where he can literally bend light. This requires an incredible amount of fine tuning though so he tends to only do basic stuff like making a whole room go dark (he can burn your eyes out but it’s a little too messy for his tastes). I created them way before Fifteen or any Chuuya backstory dropped so a lot of their backstory seems odd depending on the AU.
This is also a redraw of traditional art I did of them in 2019, which I’ll put under the cut.
Tumblr media
What’s changed about my art style and how i draw them since then? Well obv i switched to digital art, i also developed a hatred for lineart and then i also gave them CURLY hair and freckles. Cause they deserve it. Anyways. Posting this before the day ends and their birthday is gone.

Bang, Bang, Pop!: Reviewing Girls With Guns Anime
Tumblr media
Created in Microsoft Paint.
In recent years, there have been even more anime featuring girls with guns, expanding the genre. I decided to examine this genre and offer my thoughts.
Reprinted from The Geekiary, my History Hermann WordPress blog on Feb. 17, 2023, and Wayback Machine. This was the fifty-first article I wrote for The Geekiary. This post was originally published on August 16, 2022.
When you think of girls with guns in popular culture, you might think of Lara Croft, Sarah Connor, Alien, Foxy Brown, or Coffy. However, there are more than just hundreds of films featuring girls with guns. In anime, there are over 20 girls with guns series.
While there are many strong anime gunslinging girls, there aren't as many anime which are truly "girls with guns". It is a genre defined by series such as the 1980s sci-fi comedy and space opera, Dirty Pair, centered on two women: Kei and Yuri.
Since then, there have been many more series, including the recently-ended Vampire in the Garden and currently airing Lycoris Recoil. There are also older series such as Gunsmith Cats, El Cazador de la Bruja, Noir, and Otherside Picnic. This article reviews these six series and four others. It is sample of a much wider array of girls with guns anime.
This post contains spoilers for the ten series that I'm writing about. So, without further ado, let me begin!
Girls with guns are stars of the show in Lycoris Recoil
Tumblr media
Chisato Nishikigi defends herself from those trying to kill her in the show's sixth episode
This original anime series by Spider Lily and Asaura is all the rage. The /r/yurimemes subreddit is filled with posts of Chisato (Chika Anzai) and Takina Inoue (Shion Wakayama), the show's protagonists, as is /r/wholesomeyuri. The show's yuri subtext is often noted. Furthermore, the show's subreddit, /r/LycorisRecoil, has over 4500 subscribers. The show's story, characters, animation, and dialogue make it easy to like.
The series begins when Takina brazenly uses a machine gun against criminals, threatening the life of a fellow "Lycoris", an armed intelligence agent. The covert organization, Direct Attack (DA), fires her. She is then transferred to Café LycoReco, a DA front organization, where she meets Chisato, a fellow Lycoris. She also meets a former DA member named Mizuki Nakahara (Ami Koshimizu) and an Afro-Japanese man named Mika (Kosuke Sakaki) who runs the cafe.
The series pulls you in due to Takina's struggle with fellow DA agents who resent her, and villains who attempt to take down Lycoris. The same can be said about Chisato's mysterious past and a hacker named Kurumi (Misaki Kuno) joins the show's heroes. The series often focuses on growing friendship between Takina and Chisato, arguably with romantic undertones. Unlike other anime about girls with guns, Chisato only uses rubber bullets. This means that those she does not kill anyone, a practice Takina adopts, as they work together as a team.
Momo shines through in Vampire in the Garden
Tumblr media
Momo defends herself from a vampire girl, Alicia
This original dark fantasy net anime features many girls with guns. Front and center is Momo (Megumi Han) who runs away from home, where she is a soldier, and trainee in a war against vampires. She meets Fine (Yū Kobayashi), queen of the vampires, learning to love life and experience music all at the same time. Unfortunately, her controlling mother, Nobara (Rika Fukami) sends out a search party to find Momo. She wants to bring her "back" to "civilization" and way from the purportedly "barbaric" vampires.
In the process, Fine and Momo grow closer to one another. Like many other girls with guns anime, there are many yuri vibes in the series. In fact, neither of these protagonists gets a chance to live together. They are chased throughout the anime and do not have a chance to rest. This is because society sees relationships between humans and vampires as "unnatural" and does not accept them.
The focus on the relationship between Fine and Momo parallels those who do not accept queer relationships and those othered by society. Rather than an anime solely about girls with guns, Vampire in the Garden is a mature dark fantasy filled with blood, death, explosions, and serious injury. Even so, there are scenes with a slice-of-life feel. This five-episode anime ends positively. Momo founds a society many years later where humans and vampires can live together in peace.
Gunsmith Cats exemplifies the girls with guns genre
Tumblr media
Irene "Rally" Vincent at the shooting range in the episode "Neutral Zone"
This adventure-crime series is based on an eight-volume manga of the same name illustrated, and written, by Kenichi Sonoda. It is different than other series in this post because it is loosely set in Chicago. It centers around Irene "Rally" Vincent (Michiko Neya), a 19-year-old woman who operates "Gunsmith Cats" gun shop. She works with 17-year-old explosives expert and former sex worker named "Minnie" May Hopkins (Kae Araki) as a bounty hunter in the underworld.
The anime is an original video animation (OVA), released between November 1995 and September 1996. It is only three episodes long.  Some reviewers praised the animation as colorful, fun, and a "solid piece" of filmmaking. Others praised the action, artwork, and said it sounded like a "gritty" suburb of Chicago. Moreover, there were those who described the animation as smooth, said it has the same amount of humor as the original manga, but complained that the series should have been longer.
Like Vampire of the Garden and Lycoris Recoil, yuri themes are implied. Although Yuricon's founder Erica Friedman does not write about the anime on her blog, Okazu, she did review each volume of the five-volume manga, Gunsmith Cats BURST. In her reviews, she notes the yuri subtext between Rally and Minnie. She also noted that mafia donna Goldie Musso is a stereotypical "evil" lesbian. In the manga, all three of them live together. Otherwise, the series fits within the girls with guns anime genre.
Love, amnesia, and guns in El Cazador de la Bruja
Tumblr media
Nadie, Ellis, and nuns shelter in a basement, hiding for people out to get them, in an episode
This 2007 series, a mix of modern Western, adventure, and yuri, is a classic girls with guns anime. It centers around Ellis (Ai Shimizu), a fugitive who has amnesia, an unknown past, and powers of some kind, and a bounty hunter named Nadie (Shizuka Itō). Both travel south in hopes of finding the key to who Ellis is, where she was born, and what she did.
In a review of El Cazadar de la Bruja first episode, Friedman noted that there were clear yuri vibes. But, she worried there would be another "ambiguously yuri" relationship like other Madlax series. However, in a review at the end of the series, Friedman praised the growing romance between Nadie and Ellis. She said it is different than Noir in more ways than one.
Others were more critical of this series, especially purported "filler" episodes. They noted that even the show's gun violence is restrained. This series is unlike other anime in this genre as it is set in the Southwest United States and Mexico. As a result, it shares similarities with Western animations like Nomad of Nowhere and The Legend of Calamity Jane. Both series have gun-toting female protagonists.
Girls with guns are at the center of Noir
Tumblr media
Kirika and Marielle in the front, with Chloe in the background, in an image on the show's now-defunct official website in 2003
This adventure anime is as well-known as El Cazador de la Bruja. It is often noted as exemplary of the girls with guns genre in anime. It centers on two female assassins, a Corsican woman named Mireille Bouquet (Hōko Kuwashima) and a Japanese woman with amnesia, Kirika Yuumura (Kotono Mitsuishi). Both journey together to learn about their past. They ally together and assassinate "bad" people under a code name: Noir. They face a French secret organization named Les Soldats, led by Altena (Tarako), which is out to kill them, and a skilled assassin named Chloe (Aya Hisakawa).
Friedman, who I've mentioned earlier, criticized the series for weak animation at times. But, she praised the show's music, settings, and yuri vibes in the series. She added that people will put up with the series, despite absurd storylines because it has an attractive woman with a gun. TV Tropes, on a page about LGBTQ fanbase of anime and manga, stated that the series garnered a "sizable lesbian fanbase" due to the "ambiguous" relationship between Mireille and Kirika. They also noted the subtle lesbian attraction shown later.
Director Koichi Mashimo described this series, Madlax, and El Cazador de la Bruja, as his "girls-with-guns genre trilogy". Some praised the 26-episode series for redefining girls with guns series, with an elegant, and sleek story. But they criticized it for having repetitive actions sequences. Others said that Noir was an original anime which "stands out". In the end, the series changed the girls with guns genre for years to come, although no series since then has been exactly like it.
Girls with guns are focal point of Otherside Picnic
Tumblr media
Sorowo aims a military-style weapon while Toriko sits next to her
This adventure sci-fi yuri series centers around two women. One is a college student named Sorawo Kamikoshi (Yumiri Hanamori) who enters parallel worlds named the Otherside. The other is the woman who saves her, a former Canadian special forces soldier named Torika Nishina (Ai Kayano). The series focuses on Nishina's quest for her friend, and their repeated attempts to return to the Otherside to gain artifacts, with the help of Kozakura (Rina Hidaka). However, the world affects them physically and mentally in ways they didn't expect.
Early last year, I began watching this series, excited to watch it since too many yuri anime are either set in schools or fantasies, with the implication that lesbian relationships will be short-lived and even replaced by heterosexuality. Unfortunately, this series did not deliver on that promise. Friedman criticizes the series for being a "children’s version of the novels". My bigger qualm is that the series did not deliver on the yuri that seemed present from the beginning, despite romantic vibes throughout.
Otherside Picnic remains within the girls with guns genre. Even in a few episodes, Sorawo and Torika save U.S. military soldiers from Okinawa who are stuck in the Otherside. Unfortunately, this becomes imperialist apologia. It glosses over problems with U.S. military occupation, and presence, in Okinawa, and Japan. It marks a low point for the entire series.
Girls with guns have an important role in Blue Drop
Tumblr media
Yūko takes out a gun to defend Mari from harm in the show's sixth episode
This 2007 yuri sci-fi drama contains some girls with guns. On the manga cover, a girl named Shōta has a gun. On the other hand, neither of the show's protagonists, Mari or Hagino, uses a gun during the series. Instead, secondary characters like Yūko and Tsubael have guns. Yūko even confronts Hagino at gunpoint. Otherwise, there are armed sentries on the ships from another world.
Blue Drop delivers more on yuri themes than Otherside Picnic or even, arguably, Lycoris Recoil. And you don't even need on yuri goggles to see it. It is more than a "fun watch" with likable characters, some of whom are morally ambiguous. Instead, it is an enveloping story which draws you in, with its plot and animation. Even the ending is heartbreaking.
Since the series is usually put into the sci-fi and yuri genres, reviewers don't often put it into the girls with guns genre. Although there are fewer girls with guns in Blue Drop than other series noted in this article, it has positives which go beyond other series. It is a classic that can be watched over and over. The same can likely also be said about the affiliated manga which ran from 2004 to 2008.
Badass girls with guns are central to Canaan
Tumblr media
Canaan about to fire her pistol during the show's opening
This 2009 mystery thriller is little-known, despite the fact that a Japanese game company, Type-Moon, created it. It's based on a special scenario originally outlined in 2009 game, 428: Shibuya Scramble. This anime centers on a gun-toting assassin and mercenary named Canaan (Miyuki Sawashiro). She faces a rival named Alphard Al Sheya (Maaya Sakamoto), a skilled assassin who heads a terrorist organization named Snake. Canaan also has a pretty reporter friend named Maria Ōsawa (Yoshino Nanjō).
Canaan and Alphard are both skilled at using firearms, as is ex-mercenary Siam (Akio Ōtsuka), Alphard's lieutenant, Liang Qi (Rie Tanaka), and many others. Predictably, yuri themes are spread throughout this anime. Canaan often saves Maria from sticky situations thanks to her ability to perceive people's emotions as colors. They clearly are attracted toward each other. The series ends with Canaan being, in the words of Friedman, "awarded equal status to Maria in her heart."
Otherwise, Canaan is action-packed, with fast-paced fight sequences and chases. In some ways, it makes me think of chase scenes in Carmen Sandiego, although the ones in that series are never filled with guns, but with other deadly weapons instead. This series is unique because Canaan is from an unnamed country in the Middle East, presumably Syria or Lebanon. It adds another dimension to the story.
Guns, love, and demons in Engage Kiss
Tumblr media
Shu, Sharon, and Ayano pictured on the show's official website.
In this ongoing, and currently airing, romantic comedy, one character stands out as a girl with a gun: Ayano Yugiri (Lynn). She is the former girlfriend of Shuu Ogata (Soma Saito). He lost his memories of their relationship after partnering with a demon named Kisara (Saya Aizawa). To give her the necessary demon powers to fight, he kisses her, which erases a memory every time he does so.
While it seems, at first, that she chooses his memories to erase at random, it is later shown that she can choose which ones to erase. She even eliminates a time that Shuu and Ayano have sex, enjoy each other's company. She also eliminates a time when Shuu had sex with the demon-hating priest, Sharon Holygrail (Rumi Okabo), and poisoned her in a devious way.
Ayano has the most skills at using firearms apart from Shuu. It has not been revealed how she is so skilled, but she may have on-the-job experience. Unlike Lycoris Recoil, the only other people who use guns are the police, as the villains often manipulate demons instead. None of the show's characters without faults, and have all likely done deplorable things.
A gun-toting protagonist in Venus Versus Virus
Tumblr media
Lucia fires her gun in the show's opening
This dark fantasy and supernatural thriller centers around two girls with guns: Lucia Nahashi (Ayahi Takagaki) and Sumire Takahana (Minori Chihara). Although it has been rightly described as a series to avoid by Stig Høgset of THEM Anime Reviews. He argued that it is "lazy and dumb", with mild fanservice and violence. That makes it different from others in this genre, which are usually more violent and bloody.
In Venus Versus Virus, Lucia, especially, is skilled with use of a firearm. She works to protect Sumire, along with others, from harm that demons, known as "viruses", can inflict. Predictably they both bond in the process. Even so, the yuri themes in this story are not very strong, with neither Lucia nor Sumire appearing to be lesbians.
On the other hand, the series is strong as an anime that features girls with guns. As such, it is relatively well-established in the genre. In fact, when bullets hit Sumire, it causes her violent personality to surface, which can be harmful to anyone around her.
Closing thoughts
There are many other examples of girls with guns anime.  Some of the most prominent, apart from Dirty Pair, include Bubblegum Crisis, Miami Guns, Gunslinger Girl, and Burn-Up. One critic argued that while there aren't many true girls with guns anime, the ones that do exist have been so influential, it has created "an entire thematic genre and stereotype of anime."
Princess Principal and the film, Kite Liberator also fall into the genre. Even Izetta: The Last Witch might fall into the genre since Izetta rides an anti-tank rifle. Apart from Sabine Wren, Padme Amidala, and Zam Wessell, who tote guns in the Star Wars franchise, there's no Western animated equivalent of the genre. On the other hand, there are some gun-wielding women elsewhere, like Millie in Helluva Boss.
There are many girls with guns within anime, but even with newer series, it remains to be seen if the current trend toward more girls with guns will continue. Many of the series within the genre, such as Strike Witches, Michiko & Hatchin, Grenadier, and Upotte!! are years old. The same is the case for Madlax, set in the same world as Birdie Wing.
With anime production companies flush with cash, there is a possibility of further girls with guns anime in the future.

Starting on November 1, void+ will present Unknown Image Series no.8 #1 YAMAMOTO Ayaka “organ.”
The Unknown series of exhibitions, launched in 2011, are planned and coordinated by independent curator Kato Chika. This eighth exhibition takes the title “Unknown Image,” and will be staged as a group show by five artists in the format of consecutive solo exhibitions at HIGURE 17-15 cas and void+.
Featured in the first show is Yamamoto Ayaka, who majored in painting at Kyoto Seika University’s Faculty of Arts, but began producing photographs during a student exchange in the United States. Recent years have seen Yamamoto traveling to parts of the world where her own knowledge, experience and language do not apply, and shooting portraits of girls she meets there. She has thrown herself enthusiastically into the project, visiting Eastern European nations including Estonia, Latvia, Russia, Ukraine, Bulgaria, Romania, and Belarus, and this year traveling to Africa for the first time, to take photos in Malawi.
Unknown Image Series no.8 #1 YAMAMOTO Ayaka “organ” will present a new work on video by Yamamoto, along with a selection of photographic works. In conjunction with the exhibition, a talk event will also be held, featuring, in addition to the artist, guests Mitsuda Yuri, curator at Kawamura Memorial DIC Museum of Art, and Nakamura Fumiko, curator at Aichi Prefectural Museum of Art.

About “organ”
When I first visited Latvia in 2011, I was woken every morning by my friend, humming. To me this felt like the continuation of a pre-verbal voice, the emission of memories unconsciously accumulating within her, in the form of sound images. The sensation was one of experiencing the very time she had traveled, at a different level from conversation. Her voice, released, become part of my body, and emitting it again in my own voice causes it to circulate and connect to others. An organ may be a body organ or a musical instrument; in Japanese the character (器) read as ki or utsuwa has these meanings, while also referring to a vessel. Back in the mists of time, the sound of a bell used in rituals, reverberating in the cavity of that bell, would apparently cause the wearer to be possessed by some invisible presence, or have such a presence circulating within them. Hopefully the sounds harbored by the body as empty vessel will put us in touch with glimmers of yet unseen things found in its depths.
(YAMAMOTO Ayaka, October 2019)
--------
organ
organ
Yamamoto’s photographs, at first glance reminiscent of classical paintings, show “creatures” of almost unreal beauty. The girls appear either to be vacantly staring at some point in the distance, or have their eyes closed as if dead. Or they wear a mask or veil, making it impossible to even see their expression, although something remains in the body wearing the mask, or visible faintly behind the veil. What is it? Yamamoto deliberately sets out to take photographs in countries where she does not speak the language, constructing images in collaboration with her subjects via non-verbal communication. The process of peeling away the layers that go to make up an individual and clothing them in new garb apparently, in the end, creates a moment in which the subject sheds her self-consciousness. Photo shoots that strip away literally everything previous—the clothes the person was wearing, their name, memories, self-consciousness—to give them a totally new appearance, are filled with the intrinsic violence of photography. Yet the artist says that no matter how much she endeavors to denude her subjects of their attributes, deep down, something remains. What has Yamamoto identified there? By photographing strangers from other countries, what question does she continually ask? These tranquil portraits serve at once as inquiries on the part of the artist, and the very riddle of images. In this solo outing, Yamamoto will present a video work, shot in Latvia in 2019. The organ/body as empty vessel, sings a song without words. This generates further questions about what kind of sounds are harbored by the empty vessel placed in a video/time.
KATO Chika (Unknown Series curator)

YAMAMOTO Ayaka
主な個展に「We are Made of Grass, Soil, and Trees」(タカ・イシイギャラリー フォトグラフィー/フィルム、2018)、「Nous n'irons plus au bois」(同、2014)など。 2019年に写真集『We are Made of Grass, Soil, and Trees』(T&M Projects、2018)が「さがみはら写真新人奨励賞」を受賞。
YAMAMOTO Ayaka Born 1983 in Hyogo, Japan. BFA in painting, Kyoto Seika University, Faculty of Fine Art.   In a situation in which communication through words was difficult, photography took on a value beyond its intrinsic nature, serving as a point of contact with others. Since then, Yamamoto has continued to take in a certain sense violent, yet alluring portraits. Solo exhibitions include ”We are Made of Grass, Soil, and Trees” (Taka Ishii Gallery Photography/Film, 2018) and “Nous n’irons plus au bois” (Taka Ishii Gallery Photography/Film, 2014). She photographs mainly in Eastern Europe, and has participated in photo exhibitions and residencies in Japan and overseas. She won  the 19th Sagamihara Prize for Newcomer Professionals in 2019 for her photobook We are Made of Grass, Soil, and Trees(T&M Projects, 2018).

<Unknown Image Series no.8 展覧会>
Unknown Image
<Unknown Image Series no.8 exhibitions>
Creating unknown images
Exploring the power and essence possessed by images, to create unknown images.
A vast number of images are generated every day in this world, only to vanish, but just occasionally, some extraordinary images do emerge. The artists in this eighth Unknown exhibition are Mitamura Midori, Yokoyama Nami, Suzuki Nozomi, Yamamoto Ayaka, and Shoji Asami, who will stage consecutive solo shows. Those serving as guests for the talk events for each of these shows, and providing the texts, will include Mitsuda Yuri, Umezu Gen, Iida Shihoko, Nakamura Fumiko, and Nakao Takuya. After the series is finished a bilingual document will be produced, thus extending the exhibition into another form of expression, that of the book.
Images made by women
The Unknown Image series is also an opportunity to delve deeply into the individual work of some of today’s most noteworthy artists and their worlds, identifying further possibilities for each. This time, albeit not by design, all the artists are female.
Yamamoto Ayaka, featured in the first of the exhibitions, travels to countries where she does not speak the language, and takes portrait photographs suffused with a beauty and violence verging on the mystical. What is it that remains even when everything is stripped from her subjects, down to their names and consciousness, in an attempt to turn them into empty vessels? Suzuki Nozomi is a quiet explorer of the principles of photography and time. Endowing non-living things with a “gaze” and “memory” she gives her photos something like a physical body. Yokoyama Nami blends the vast history of painting and small personal histories to depict the beauty of everyday, insignificant things and what lies behind the bright and shiny. Shoji Asami’s lines create a narrative quality that draws the viewer in like a stage, and a corporeal painterly space suffused with the energy of life and death. Mitamura Midori is the artist in this series with the longest career. Her many very personal images and words are presented in photographs, videos, objects, drawings and installations, that go beyond individual stories or the confines of art, taking on a universal quality that irrevocably captures the heart of the viewer. The guests, meanwhile, are a varied lineup in terms of age and gender, but all individuals on the frontlines of art creation, of superb critical talent.
Once a marginal presence in art history, female artists are now at its cutting edge. What kind of images do these artists make? Why have they felt the need to produce them? The artists participating in these exhibitions have different origins and career trajectories, different ways of engaging with their themes, with history and current circumstances, and different aims. Yet their presence, and the images they create, are without exception strong and vibrant. Their unknown images will quietly shake the viewer to the core, and likely serve as a force for many types of change in the world.

SUZUKI Nozomi
SUZUKI Nozomi Born 1983 in Saitama, Japan.Currently in the doctorate course of Intermedia Art at Tokyo University of the Arts.Attempts to visualize, through the principles of photography, the memories resembling latent images submerged in innocuous everyday objects. Fixing photographs, which have the characteristic of being present yet absent, directly to objects, assigns photographs something like a tactile body, suspending passing time in the now.   Recent group exhibitions include “In the middle of tomorrow and yesterday” (Hajimari Art Center, 2019), “MOT Satellite 2018 Fall: To Become a Narrative” (Kiyosumi-Shirakawa, 2018), “Photographs of Innocence and of Experience: Contemporary Japanese Photography vol.14” (Tokyo Photographic Art Museum, 2017), and “New Vision Saitama 5: The Emerging Body” (The Museum of Modern Art, Saitama, 2016). Among her many awards, she was recipient of the POLA Art Foundation Grant for Overseas Research in 2018, under which she is currently studying in the UK.
SHOJI Asami
SHOJI Asami Born 1988 in Fukushima, Japan. Earned her MFA in printmaking in 2012 from Tama Art University (Tokyo). ”A line is drawn. It is not necessarily a borderline of the kind dividing heaven and earth, but perhaps a space that opens up through movement, like that of a creature that crawls along the ground, leaving a track in sand or mud. In our lives we are continuously inheriting a world imagined by someone.” Despite not having a specific narrative, Shoji’s paintings reveal various stories to the viewer. They also spawn a living painterly space of circulating free physical sensation, through the spatial experience of painting. Solo shows include”Tomorrow’s Unseen Mythologies” (gallery21yo-j, 2019), “Diagram of the Mud”(Cale, 2018), “A Painter in the Theater” (gallery21yo-j, 2017), and “During the Night” (Tokyo Wonder Site, Shibuya,2017). Grand Prix winner at the “FACE 2019” Sompo Japan Nipponkoa Art Awards.
YOKOYAMA Nami
YOKOYAMA Nami Born 1986 in Gifu, Japan. Earned her MFA in painting in 2012 from Aichi Prefectural University of Fine Arts and Music. By shining a light on things that never take center stage, such as familiar objects in the moment before their discarding, and the fittings and wiring hidden behind neon signs, Yokoyama does away with the parameters of the roles played by these things to express the fundamental beauty and raison d’etre possessed by all things. Her recent drawings and paintings continue to question the meaning of love. Solo and group exhibitions include “Aperto 10: Memories of Love and Me” (21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa, 2019), “Nissan Art Award 2017” (BankART Studio NYK), “Reaching for the Real” (Toyota Municipal Museum of Art, 2014),and “Draw the World” (Art Lab Aichi, 2013). Recipient of the Nissan Art Award 2017 Audience Award.

Taking as her theme “dramas that people can step into,” Mitamura combines motifs of everyday memories and reminiscences with various media such as photography and video, household goods and language, presenting in Japan and further afield spatial works that resemble an episode of an autobiographical novel. Recent solo exhibitions include ”If not here, then I'm somewhere else.” (Galeria Manuel Ojeda, 2018) and “Art & Breakfast” (CAAM – Atlantic Center of Modern Art, 2017)both in Gran Canaria, Spain. Cup.
Kaito had wandered around Hope’s Peak Academy’s campus, the cup of coffee he held between his hands being his only company. He watched as the students left through the front gate, so distant from them he could barely make out their faces, until he was sure most of them had left. The moment he thought he could be alone, he moved to the garden. It wasn’t touched by people who weren’t part of the gardening club and, if the rare opportunity arose, the ikebana club. By what he had heard, doing as much as trying to take a flower from its place would make an alarm ring through the school. Well, he wasn’t there to vandalize the garden, however. All he did was sit in an empty wooden bench, cup in hands.
He had conducted a careful investigation on his classmates before coming. From Asakura Chika, whose life was as simple and uninteresting as it could be, to the renowned jidaigeki actor, Nakagawa Gennosuke, all of them were documented thoroughly through their lives. When creating a new character, a new facade to use in front of others, he had to prepare accordingly. Any new environment could be threatening and dangerous if he didn’t know what he was getting into, after all. And amongst all of his classmates, only three of them stood out as people who would question his identity. Only these three seemed like threats, and he prepared to deal with their intervention at any moment. One of the queens of the criminal underworld, Yamashita Itsuki, whose laid-back demeanor distracted from the true danger she presented; the naturally skeptical and inquisitive Shimoyama Taiki, who had once worked to assist in a case related to an “accident” while he worked; and, at last, Philip Brighton, who he had once stolen from during his night job, and whose influence would certainly be enough to put him behind bars.
So he was shocked, earlier that day, when he was confronted by someone else entirely.
He felt the cold of a gun to his back. A cowardly move that he had pulled many times, though he would never pull the trigger. From the place where the gun was placed in his back, a centimeter or two higher than where his own hand would put the gun if he aimed precisely forward, he could easily deduce the height of the person behind him. Approximately 1,72 meters; couldn’t be 75, since he would have been able to tell if someone was a full five centimeters taller than him, so he settled for that approximate amount. Yes, one or two centimeters was most likely the case. Three was pushing it a bit too far.
The grip was firm, unwavering, much like his own. Someone who wouldn’t hesitate to hurt others, for whatever reason. It couldn’t be Uedera, even if her height matched his first assumption; her hands were always shaking slightly, and he doubted she had it in her to point a gun at someone. She was a gentle, fragile person, who would freak out at the mere sight of blood. Yes, this was someone with nerves of steel. Someone who, when faced with danger, wouldn’t even waver. That sort of behavior… he wanted to say it was Kisarijo Yukie, but the height wouldn’t match. Nakahara Shinobu, perhaps? He was a dangerous fellow, with his body count being much higher than the number of people he had stolen from. He was tempted to call him by his last name, trying to see if he had been correct, but his thoughts were interrupted.
“Who are you?”
…oh. He truly didn’t expect this one, but he mentally chastised himself for not doing so. Of course a Kisarijo would be behind him at that moment. And even though he didn’t go by the name of Kisarijo, he was…
“Yuu-kun,” Kaito laughed, uneasiness oozing from his every word, “let’s drop that dangerous thing, okay? You know me, I’m Kaito—”
“I asked you a question, asshole.” The gun was pressed even closer to his skin now, pressing his clothing down with the muzzle. Yuji most likely couldn’t see his expression, but he couldn’t stop smiling at that. “Shokyokusai Kaito doesn’t exist. It’s an alias. I’ve been conducting my little investigation for a while now, and I know no one by that name existed in the first place. You were thorough enough to create false tracks. I was just more thorough than you.”
“…the detective skills really are genetic, huh?” Kaito’s voice… changed. It wasn’t even the tone, or the volume, or the way he spoke. His entire voice changed. Like the voice Yuji had listened to for days and days was nothing more than an impression, a skilled reproduction of a human’s voice. This one was far more real, far more cruel. And even then, he smiled, voice so cheerful.
After all, he was uncontrollably happy. Happy that someone could tell. He couldn’t even hold back his laughter, sighing as he regained his composure. “What gave it away? Was it the surname? I even made detailed records on how I chose it in an orphanage. I didn’t think it would be surprising for a kid to choose their favorite magician’s surname as their own, since they didn’t have one. …Well, then again, what kid knows about magicians from almost a full century ago?”
“Your associates weren’t as determined as you,” Yuji replied, his tone unsurprisingly cold. He must have been wary of his strange demeanor, that didn’t match at all someone being held at gunpoint. “All it took was doing this to them and one of them opened their mouth.”
Tsk. He could guess which one had crumbled under pressure. He’d sever that weak link later. “If you want a thing done well, do it yourself, as they say. That’s a mistake on my part. Sorry for not having the best actors working for me. Anyway—”
“The question. Answer it, now.”
“Does it matter?”
He turned around. Luckily, Yuji didn’t shoot him by reflex, the gun now pressed against his chest. Ah, he recognized that one. The model, the small scratches from the prolonged use, and the care put into making sure those weren’t as noticeable. He wasn’t sure when Kogane had the chance to steal it, but he could tell that she should be desperately looking for it right about now. The musician looked so confused, the poor guy. He frowned deeply as Kaito did that, probably knowing full well his bluff had been called out. The toymaker had made a slight miscalculation: Kisarijo Yukie would have shot him as a warning. Kogane Yuji wasn’t so heartless.
He moved both his hands to Yuji’s, holding them and the gun between those with care. And he forced Yuji’s arm to move up, lifting the gun to his forehead.
“Shoot. And make sure you aim real good, okaaaay? You wouldn’t want to waste the bullets from Kisarijo-kun’s handgun, would you? Come on, you can do it. Just pull the trigger and let’s see where your thoroughness leads you!”
A second passed.
Another second.
Neither of them moved, completely fixated on each other’s eyes, even their breaths paralyzed. That moment… it was, most likely, terrifying for Yuji. But for Kaito, there was a strange intimacy in looking at each other like this, attention turned entirely to another person and their thoughts. He felt the same rush that he got from going against the detective duo. The same feeling of being everything on someone else’s mind, of his life depending on someone else’s choice. There was a masochistic pleasure in putting himself at risk.
Kaito lowered Yuji’s hands. “I thought so,” Were his last words, as he walked away. Yuji didn’t follow him.
It was after that encounter that he made his way to the school’s garden, after watching the students leave one by one, with a cup of coffee he had grabbed to drink and relax by himself.
And yet the question repeated in his mind.
Omae wa dare da?
Indeed. Who was he? He asked himself that same question so many times, it became, partially, routine. When Yuji asked him, he felt uncontrollably happy… but at the same time, unbearably sad. After all, someone had seen through him. Someone had seen through his barriers and lies and seen the same empty void he did. While he was happy someone could understand he wasn’t Kaito Shokyokusai, the calm, average persona he had fabricated for himself, he couldn’t help but feel lost, knowing they only saw the lack of identity he possessed.
Who was he, really? He wasn’t sure. The more he acted as someone else, the more he lost the bare essence of who he used to be. He wasn’t Louis DuPont, the idealization of a perfect thief who could become anyone. Kaito Shokyokusai was just the silly toymaker he had fabricated for a heist, who happened to be invited to Hope’s Peak Academy. And it had been a long, long time since he felt the name he received from his mother simply didn’t describe him. His identity was a mixture of too many roles, melting and merging, mixing and ever-changing. He absorbed parts of his characters, and before he knew it, everything was a fabrication.
How much of what he felt was real? Was this heavy feeling in his chest, this feeling of despair upon feeling isolated, really his? Was this just another one of the traits he gave one of his many, many past personas? And his longing for friendship? And his fear of allowing himself to feel? And even this precise sentiment, this horrendous idea that he had slowly lost grip on his true self, and now had no idea who he was to begin with? Was this, too, a lie he eventually believed in? Was this the will of which character? Which of the many faces he had created cried these salty tears, and held the coffee cup with such strength?
And he held it stronger, stronger, stronger still…
He only realized what had happened when the sharp pain took over his other senses. He had been staring into the cup, now shattered. The hot coffee was all over his hands and lap, burning his skin. Coffee and blood mixed in his palms, pierced by shards of glass, the horrible pain only worsening by the second.
This blood… it was real, wasn’t it? Could he trust himself enough to believe that?
…of course, yes, he kept bandages with him. A thief never knows when they will get injured like this, so it was best to always carry it around. He struggled to get the roll out of his backpack, with how much it hurt to move his fingers, let alone use his palms, but he managed. Now, all he had to do was take the shards off and wrap the bandages around his hands. It should be easy enough. He could—
Steps. He continued moving, as if he hadn’t noticed. It was too late to run away, as the steps got closer and closer. By the intervals between steps and the pace… yes, he could guess who that was. Even the sound the shoe made was very distinct, when in conjunction with the approximate build of the person.
He watched from the window as Chika approached Kaito—no, the person calling himself Kaito. That wasn’t even his name. He managed to go back and give Yukie her handgun, first getting rid of his fingerprints (and that guy’s) and then slipping it into her bag, while she was busy with club practice. It took him a while to find a window where he could see the toymaker. When he did, he only watched as he spent a good half an hour staring into his cup of coffee, only to shatter it with his own hands all of a sudden.
Yuji put his thumb in his lips, biting the tip of his nail off as he observed. Taking the gun was an overreaction, he knew that much now that he had time to think about it. He wouldn’t even try to justify it to himself—it was, all things considered, something he shouldn’t have done in the first place. But the way the student going by Kaito Shokyokusai looked at him, crazed smile tainting Yuji’s memories of his half-smiles, always gracing his expression… the way his eyes stared deep into his soul, leaving the lasting impression that he could read his every thought, see through every feeling… the empty, lifeless pink eyes, filled with a mixture of happiness and pain he couldn’t figure out, as he took both his hands and pointed Yukie’s handgun into his own forehead…
He was sweating. He only realized it now, which made him frown even more as Chika took Kaito away from the garden.
That guy wanted to be shot. He sounded almost disappointed when he didn’t. He was beyond his comprehension, at that moment; he was an unreadable riddle, a threat he couldn’t begin to predict.
He was a menace.
He had to act quick.
The detective skills really are genetic, huh?
The ginger bit his nail again, expression shifting to a hatred he couldn’t explain. I’m doing this because I don’t want people to get hurt. I’m nothing like that asshole, that fucking bastard who left my mom! I’m nothing, nothing like him! Even the thought that I share his blood disgusts me! I’m no detective, and I’m no Kisarijo! Another bite, and another one, and another one. It was becoming too short for him to keep doing this. He moved to the next one.
No. He needed to calm down, and act like he always did. Even if his intentions were to protect others from this person, infiltrated amongst his classmates, it wasn’t as if people would stop thinking of him as the bastard son, who was raised by his mom until he was old enough to understand the insults hurled at her. That was all he would ever be. Trying to show off as something other than that… no, it was only logical that it would change nothing. So he should play into their expectations.
He forced a smile. At this point, he didn’t quite remember how it felt, to genuinely smile in public. He ran his fingers through his hair, before deciding to go home. His mother would be worried if he arrived too late, and there wasn’t much he could do at the moment.
