25: My idea of a perfect date
…Anything which doesn’t involve very big crowds, loud noises and the colour yellow. So…a coffee date (for a non-occasion) and a date to an observatory/planetarium (for occasion)
33: What words make me feel the best about myself
Honestly, anything that is a (preferably non-subtle) compliment.
43: Sexiest person that comes to my mind immediately
…you, obviously! but on a completely unrelated note Neil Melendez or Claire Browne from the Good Doctor

Tumblr media
As you looked at all your things that were packed in your old apartment you remembered when Neil had asked you to move in with him.
It was another day in the hospital, you and him were working on a patient in surgery. As you were stitching Neil just popped the question, being truly genuine. “So I was thinking, would you like to move to the next level and move in with me?” You were in shock. Your mouth hanging open at the thought that you and Neil would be with each other almost 24/7. You do love Neil and this is what you wanted, you wanted to move to the next level. You were just scared, scared that maybe it was heading too fast, that it was changing. Maybe change was good. With your hands coated in blood you made sure not to touch Neil’s face as you brought yourself to kiss him. “Of course I’ll move in with you. I love you.”
Neil gave you a look of adornment, searching your eyes. “Okay then its settled. I’ll help you move.” He gave you another quick kiss and smiled, his dimples showing.
“Wow,” Audrey said as she cleaned herself since the surgery ended.
“What?”
“I’m just surprised,” she shrugged. You felt odd talking to her about your relationship with Neil. You know that the two of them have history with each other and you didn’t want any harsh feelings. “Didn’t see this coming.”
“You and me both,” you laughed. “But I feel this is the right step. I do love him and do want to spend the rest of my life with him so I think we’re going in the right direction.”
Audrey nodded, “just make sure its what you want and its not going too fast for you.”
You smiled, the excitement overwhelming you as you stashed everything in boxes and taped it up. Calling Neil on the phone you tell him your done and you can tell he is equally as excited as you. He is really happy about this and that makes you feel overjoyed and it makes you feel you are doing the right thing.
“Well I’m coming over there now, talk to you later babe. Love you.”
You chuckled and kissed the phone, “love you more.”
You waited for him and he did end up there at your house. You didn’t have a lot of items to move since you didn’t live in such an extravagant home. It was just a tiny apartment for all your necessities. As you loaded things into his car you felt the happiness and just the feeling like you were on top of the world.
You wrapped your arms around Neil’s broad shoulders, “I con’t believe we’re doing this.”
Neil kissed your forehead, “I know, but I couldn’t be happier. I want to spend my life with you, I want to be with you. I’m just excited to have you in my arms when we sleep and for me to make you breakfast every morning.”
You giggled at that and so did he, “or well try to do it every morning.”
You hugged him and placed your head on his chest, “I know we’ll be happy. I can’t wait for all those things too.” You kissed his neck and gave him a beaming smile. “C’mon then, lets go to your house!”
“Our house.”
Leading him into the car, you hop right in,  “right, our house.”
Tumblr media
You were in awe of his house. It was way more high tech and big than your tiny apartment. You were amazed about everything. Feeling like a princess or a queen you were humble and acknowledged that you didn’t deserve such nice things like this. But Neil came in and reassured you that you did deserve these things and that they belonged to you now as well. You felt you were rich, this was totally going to be a new experience.
As you two cleaned the house and got set into emptying the boxes a song came on the radio that Neil loved.
“Oh wow, an oldy.” He chuckled as he stood up and put his hand out to you. “Would you like to dance, my beautiful lady?”
You bit your lip and nodded, “I would love to dance, good sir.”
The song To Be Loved was on. You two slow danced in the empty space that soon would be filled with your things and his combined. Neil started to sing to you, “To be loved to be loved ohhhhh what a feeling to be loved.” He sang these lyrics to you, his eyes looking in your eyes. You smiled, the last part where it cuts a little for the music, Neil dips you. Your cheeks turning into a bright pink, being this close to him. He puts his hands on your soft cheeks and brings his lips to yours. You bring your hands to his hair and push him deeper to kiss you. Your lips move in sync like if they too were dancing. “I love you y/n.”
“I love you more.”
Tumblr media
You two ordered pizza and drank wine as you were almost finished with unpacking. As you two were taking a break where Neil was watching tv while you made dessert you stared at all your items placed in their own rightful place. Your heart started to beat fast and you were starting to have a break down. Your autism was getting the better of you. You were starting to panic to not understand and in that moment reality set in. Your world to you was moving too fast, you were scared. Your cheeks started to flush and tears started to pour out of your eyes. Neil was not alarmed until you dropped a baking pan on the floor causing a loud noise.
Neil turned his head towards you, “hey babe what happened - hey, hey whats wrong?” He was deeply concerned, by your side in seconds. His strong arms wrapped themselves around you. You cried more into his chest, feeling embarrassed and a disappointment, a nuisance. “Its okay, talk to me. Whats wrong?” He looked at your face, wiping your tears away as he kissed both your cheeks.
“I just feel maybe this is moving too fast.” You thought Neil would be irate with you but he was calm and understanding. He nodded, “alright, now when did you start to feel this?”
“Just now, I think I was having a panic attack or something.”
“Did you feel this way this morning?” You shook your head at his question. “No, I was happy, excited. I want this.”
“You just got scared for a minute there?”
You nodded as you bit your lips, “I want his more than anything Neil. I just, reality set in and terrified me.” Neil brought you into an embrace and kissed the top of your head. “Its okay to be scared, I get scared too. Change is sometimes terrifying, to not know whats going to happen. But sometimes in life, in order to live it, sometimes we need to take a leap of faith. I’m proud of you for doing this and for accomplishing something this huge, you should be proud of yourself too. Also, just because we’re living together doesn’t mean you have to do everything I do. I won’t force you to do anything, heck not even sleep in my bed. Its on your terms, whatever makes you feel comfortable.”
You felt so happy with Neil. For once you were in a relationship where someone understood, someone cared for you. He knew the hardships of being you, with autism, life was difficult sometimes but he knows how to get you through it. “If its alright with you,” you said your voice going back to normal and you being excited again. “I would like to sleep in your bed.” Your cheeks were red, feeling bashful to ask him this. Neil gave you a warm smile and kissed you, “of course baby.”
Tumblr media
All the boxes got unpacked and you were finally moved in with him. It was a hard day but there were more good things then bad. You two ended up taking a shower together and watching a movie in his bed.
Your head was on his chest, his arms wrapped around you. You cuddled with him as you made small patterns on his chest with your soft fingers. “Thanks babe, for all this.” You whispered to Neil as you gave small pecks to his neck. Neil smiled and kissed your hand, “no problem sweetheart, I’m happy you moved in. I can’t wait for our days together.”
“I know its gonna be great.”

Hmmm Shaun's taking notes about flirting. I saw the chemistry between Melendez and Claire. Shaun's noted Claire was flirting with him. In a parallel universe I would sponsor that ship. I mean Neil is cute right??.

dating a doctor
Tumblr media
Dr. Neil Melendez X Reader imagine.
Imagine you're telling your parents you're dating Neil. At the end of the conversation, you leave the house and have an accident, you arrive at the hospital where Neil works...
Word count: 999
To the Masterlist.
You breathed deeply and tried hard to honor your parents who stand in front of you.
"You've been dating a doctor for a year so far." Your father repeated what you said. You knowed he wouldn't be happy, and neither would your mother.
"We always dreamed you'd marry..." Your mother started talking, but you interrupted her: "And I've been telling you for a long time that this is never going to happen." You tried to be patient, but the anger and impatience you felt for a long time was felt in your words.
"You're not going to turn to us in that tone, (Y/N)!" Your father raised his voice, "We know what's best for you."
"You are my parents," You said, "But there's only one person in this world who knows what's best for me and that's me."
"And why are you dating this insignificant doctor?" Your father asked after taking over his anger.
"Insignificant doctor?" You asked, "Who told you that nonsense? I'm sure I didn't say anything like that. I'm dating a senior surgeon who works at the prestigious hospital called: 'San Jose St. Bonaventure Hospital.' Dr. Neil Melendez, in case you heard the name."
The conversation got worse... Your parents had informed you that they didn't accept that you're dating one man, While they picked another man for you. You left the house in anger. You won't have the strength for your parents more than ever.
You dropped your car to the hospital to meet your partner. When you were 2 miles from the hospital a car drove at a crazy speed in front of you and from here you remembered nothing but the intensity of the collision and the crippling fear.
......................................................................................................................
"Find Dr. Melendez! Now!!!" Dr. Browne screamed she lost her mind when she saw you like this. You were close friends, she introduced you to Neil. She was like your sister, she couldn't lose you.
Shaun ran through the halls of the hospital to find Dr. Melendez. He didn't know you personally, but Shaun You've heard your name thousands of times fome Claire in the last year. So he knew how important you were to Dr. Melendez.
Shaun finally found Dr. Melendez on his way to the hospital cafeteria to have his lunch.
"Dr. Melendez!" Shaun yelled when he saw his boss, "You must come with me now!"
"Dr. Murphy!" Neil said angrily in anger and when Shaun got to him he pulled him into a corner, "why are you shouting like a mad?! If I didn't know you, I'd be sure you ran away from the psych ward."
"(Y/N) (L/M) Suffered a car accident and is hospitalized in room 503." Shaun didn't have to say another word when he said those words. Neil ran into your room, when he came into the room and saw you sleeping in bed with stitches in his face and in sick clothes, he broke.
"By all the tests, she doesn't need the injury surgery. We just gave her a few stitches." Claire said, feeling the relief of knowing that you're not in mortal danger.
Neil knew that, but he still died of worry.
"It doesn't make sense that she's here." Neil said, trying to stop his sadness from sounding out. Neil had a heart of gold, but he preferred that everyone in his work think he was cold-hearted. "(Y/N), is a cautious driver. You know Claire, How is she here?"
"In the other car, the driver was drunk... It's his fault. We should be grateful that she's okay."
Neil knew he loved you from the moment he met you, but he only just realized how... You were much more than his woman, You'd be his life! If he lost you in that accident, he'd lose his mind.
Shaun got into the room.
"(Y/N) parents are already here." He announced.
......................................................................................................................
"Claire!" Your father rose from his seat "How is (Y/N)? She will be find?" He asked anxiously, Your mother couldn't get out of her legs and wouldn't stop crying.
"(Y/N)'ll be fine. She got out really cheap. She just needed a few stitches. She faces a two-week recovery period."
"How are those men?" Your mother asked, She meant Neil.
"I'm Dr. Neil Melendez, Dr. Brown superior."
"The man who's dating my daughter? She told you your name." Your mother said.
"Yes, I and (Y/N) dating last year." Neil said.
Neil really wanted to meet your parents, but he was worried about your situation and couldn't have a calm conversation with them.
Shaun got into the room, "(Y/N) woke up." He said and got away to give treatment to another patient.
......................................................................................................................
Neil got into your room, Worried and the relief was evident on his face when he saw that you were awake and that you would be back to normal in a few weeks. If that wasn't the case... He didn't know what he was going to do.
"(Y/N)," He said quietly and sat next to you, "You are up, my love." Neil stroked your forehead. He noticed that you had the fever and calmed down even more.
"Yes..." You said and kissed his hand.
"Thank God..." Neil whispered and kissed your head.
"I know I will be found." You said to calm your partner down even though he was trying to relax, You knew he was still nervous.
"Your parents are in the waiting room."
"When they realize that you're..."
"They already know and I don't think they like that fact... But we're going to deal with them together."
"They'll do anything to get me to marry another man... They won't tolerate you and..."
"Do what they do, I'll never leave you! You are my life"
Neil was serious. He wouldn't be leaving you because your parents saw the concern in his eyes. You could only hope your parents would understand it and accept him.
You knew Neil would be your husband one day and you couldn't wait for that day.

Suggestions - Melendaire
(AO3 link)
// Neil accidentally lets something slip on a drowsy Sunday morning in bed with his girlfriend. Claire, naturally, panics. //
Word count: 2384
Neil Melendez wakes up with Claire Browne in his arms just about every morning.
The feeling still hasn’t gotten old.
Their one-year anniversary is coming around the corner. Just under two weeks away, the surgeon realizes when he does the math in his head. And even after all this time, the feeling of waking up with her head on his shoulder and tucked under his arm has never lost its luster. The rush of excitement and pure affection still rushes through his veins all the same. He’s still groggy as that dawns on him, barely awake enough to move away from the blinding sunlight coming in from the bedroom window. All he does is squint and tilt his head the other way, right into Claire’s brown curls. Getting a face full of hair should bother him, but he’s used to it by now— it only makes him smile.
They don’t need to get up right away today. It’s one of their few days off, which means they’ll spend most of the morning the way they usually do when they get a day off: sleeping in for a while, going a few rounds if they’re in the mood, and then making pancakes for breakfast. It’s a nice routine they’ve gotten into over the past year, one that’s made Neil dread work the next day. He just likes spending time with her too much; likes getting lost in her and her soft brown eyes.
Suddenly, he feels her stirring in his arms and she opens her eyes, waking up slowly with a tired moan. “What time is it?”
“Early,” he replies, sitting up in the bed leaning against the backboard.
“Ugh, I hate early. I want to kill early,” Claire groans. “Do we have to get up?”
“No. It’s our day off, we can sleep in. No surgeries, no difficult patients, no paperwork. None of it.”
“Good,” Claire sighs contentedly, pressing a lazy kiss to his cheek and sitting up to snuggle into him. “I like staying here with you.”
“I like it too,” he admits, smiling. “Hey, what do you say we go running this afternoon?”
“Yeah? You think we’ll be fully awake by then?”
“Definitely,” he affirms. “We can sleep in and then go after lunch. And the only thing I love more than you and my work is beating you at the track.”
“Oh, really funny, Neil,” she quips sarcastically, giggling. “If you win, it’s because you cheat!”
“I prefer to call it being creative,” he protests. “Besides, you’re the one who keeps falling for the old ‘fake an injury’ trick. I’ve done it a hundred times now and you fall for it every time.”
“Well excuse me for trying to be a good girlfriend,” she mumbles teasingly, accepting defeat.
“Don’t worry though, sweetheart. When I beat you this afternoon, it’ll be fair and square,” he comforts teasingly, pressing a kiss to her head. They normally spend their mornings like this too— exchanging quick kisses.
“You’re unbelievable,” Claire giggles. “Always so—“
“Arrogant?” He guesses the end of her sentence, because it’s one of the first things she’d called him when she came to St. Bonaventure’s.
“Self-assured,” she corrects him. “But if you want to say arrogant then I won’t argue with that.” She gives him a teasing smirk, which sends them both into a fit of laughter.
“I want to marry you,” he lets out as he chuckles, before he can really think about it.
Oh crap. Something he hadn’t even expected to say, something lingering underneath the surface of his mind, just slipped out.
Oh crap. Claire’s staring at him with eyes like a deer in headlights.
Oh crap. What the hell did he just say?
It’s not like he doesn’t want to marry her. He definitely does. They’ve been dating for quite some time now, ever since that close call during the earthquake nearly a year ago. But they’d both agreed to take things slowly, especially since it had taken everyone at work a little while to adjust to the idea of him and Claire in a relationship. Dr. Melendez and Dr. Browne, secret lovers. It wasn’t exactly a smooth transition, but they’d weathered it together. He loves her and she loves him, that’s all that ever really mattered. Now, they’ve built this life together— a routine of date nights and tender kisses. He’s never felt happier, and his love for her has only grown stronger with time.
So yeah, the thought of marrying her has crossed his mind more than once. Although apparently, it’s crossed his mind more frequently than he’d thought because here he is, blurting out a proposal while tangled up in bed with his girlfriend on a Sunday morning.
“What?” Claire gets out of bed and stands up, pulling the sheet up to cover her chest. Suddenly, through Neil’s fault and his fault alone, she’s wide awake and alert.
Neil winces, his nose scrunching up into his eyes. “Nothing. I mean, I didn’t— that’s not...”
“Oh my god,” she lets out, quiet and stunned as she gets up out of the bed and takes the sheet with her, keeping it wrapped around her body. “You just asked me to marry you?!”
“No no no,” he replies frantically, reaching to grab his boxers and yanking them on before standing up to face her. The bed separates them, but her eyes are wild and piercing with shock. He knows he’s just done something monumentally stupid. “That wasn’t a proposal, I swear.”
“Then what the hell was that?”
“It was...” he pauses to rack his brain for something to say to get him out of the corner he’s backed himself into, and he only lands on one thing. “... a suggestion,” he finishes with a shrug.
“A suggestion?” She looks at him skeptically, her arms crossed in front of her.
“Yes,” he confirms hesitantly.
“Ok, that’s it,” she nods curtly. “you’re insane. This— this is insane!”
“Look, I’m sorry,” he apologizes. “It was a nice moment, I was happy and still half asleep, and- and it just slipped out. Like it or not, I said it. But if you want to go back and pretend like it didn’t happen then fine, we can do that.”
“Well we can’t go back now, Neil,” she huffs. “I can’t go on pretending you didn’t just say that. I mean— god, I can still hear it in my head even now! We need to talk about it.”
“Ok,” he sighs— a little defeatedly, since he has a gut feeling that this conversation isn’t going anywhere he likes (and his gut has never steered him wrong, being a surgeon has taught him that much). “The floor’s open for discussion, Browne. How do you want to go about this?”
He tries to be as clinical as possible he waits for a response. This whole situation is a little embarrassing, really. In the small amount of time since they’ve woken up in each other’s arms, Neil’s somehow managed to blurt out a proposal to his girlfriend of less than a year and has nearly ruined everything. They’re both standing on opposite sides of the bed, in nothing but their underwear, and Neil swears the tension is thick enough to choke them to death. He can picture his colleagues attempting some hypothetical surgery, can picture calling the time of death of their relationship and marking the cause of death off as asphyxiation on some intangible substance. It’s funny, in some weird and twisted way. He’s beating himself up over where this conversation is heading, but at least Glassman would get a kick out of it.
But then, by some miracle, it doesn’t head that way at all.
Claire exhales quietly, deep in thought. Melendez can see her muscles relaxing, the tension leaving from her shoulders as she sits back down on the bed. She leans in a little, staring shyly at her fingers sunken into the bedsheets. “Well, for starters... I think you should ask me again.”
“What?” His brows furrow as a small smile creeps onto his face. Neil sits down across from her on the bed, delightfully stunned. “Are you being serious?”
“I am,” she replies calmly. Her tone is a hell of a lot calmer than Neil feels right now. He can practically feel the excitement rushing through his veins.
Is she saying what he thinks she’s saying?
Neil hasn’t expected this conversation to come for a long time. They grew into each other’s love in time, but it doesn’t erase the scars they have. Claire’s pain and trauma is actually what made her so scared to admit she loved him in the first place. It’d taken him being on the brink of death for her to admit her feelings. Now, they’ve finally grown more comfortable with their feelings but Neil still knows that taking it slow is the right move. It’s why he was so surprised when that proposal slipped off his tongue. Proposing after nearly a year of dating isn’t exactly moving at a slow pace. He supposes his feelings for her— the overwhelming urge to marry her— overcame all the voices of reason telling him to take it easy for fear of scaring her off.
Now though? Now it’s a whole different story.
He stays quiet for a second too long and the small smile on her face fades, bringing in a nervous glance instead. “I mean, only if you want to ask me,” she adds awkwardly after a moment.
“God yes I do,” he assures her. It sparks a small giggle from Claire, her eyes now sparkling and glossy with what Melendez thinks are tears of joy. “I just... I figured you might want it to be a bit different from this. I don’t even have a ring.”
“Well you know me, I’ve always hated romantics,” she dismisses with a watery chuckle.
He laughs in return and smiles until his cheeks hurt. The space between them on the bed slowly closes as Neil inches forward, dragging the sheets with him and taking her hands in his. “You... you are the single best thing that’s ever happened to me,” he starts. The awe in his own voice surprises him a little, but it’s not unexpected. Spend enough time around Dr. Browne and you’ll get used to incredible. That’s what he’d said around a year ago, and it still rings true now. He’s also said being around her makes him a better surgeon and person, which is also very true. She just makes him better, in everything he does. “I love you more than I thought was possible. So, Dr. Browne...” Claire lets out another watery laugh but her hands start to shake in his, so Neil holds them tighter. “... Will you marry me?”
There’s a moment where everything is quieter than silence. Neil starts hearing ringing in his ears, a throbbing sensation that this could go very wrong. Or, as he suspects (and hopes), it could go very very right. And he knows this is weird— that not-so accidentally proposing to your girlfriend while half-naked on a Sunday morning isn’t exactly the traditional way to ask someone to spend the rest of their life with you— but he just doesn’t care. Neil wants to have a life with her. He wants the whole package, the thing they’ve both been searching for long before finding each other. The life they’d almost given up hope on. And not for the first time since he’s met her, he wants it with Claire Browne.
And the silence is broken, like a dam flooding with a river that ends up only being one word. “Yes,” she whispers, tears welling up in her eyes. “Yes, I will marry you.”
Neil can tell, even without looking in a mirror, that his face lights up at those words. His cheeks hurt from smiling so widely, his body practically aches for her.
A year ago, he wouldn’t have dreamed of unprofessional touches or intimate moments. He’d been so scared to cross the line, the point of no return. But now, he’s about to spend the rest of his life with the most talented, kind, incredible woman he’s ever met, and he doesn’t have to be scared. He leans over, meets her in the middle of the bed while on their knees, and kisses her without hesitation.
It’s sweet, the way Claire’s kiss is always a sweet release to him, and beautiful. Admittedly, he feels tears of his own coming on and tastes the salt streaming onto their lips from both of their eyes.
Claire pulls away after a while, laughing and smiling while crying. They’re both blubbering messes at this point, filled with overwhelming tenderness.
“What do we do for a ring?” Neil finally asks after they both compose themselves a little bit.
Claire looks around the room, ruffles around the drawer of the nightstand for something, and then finally pulls out a sharpie. “Here,” she says, pulling the cap off. Melendez watches in shock as Claire scribbles a line all the way around her ring finger, forming the trace of a ring with black ink. “It’s not a permanent solution, but it’ll do.”
Neil laughs giddily. Only Claire Browne would draw an engagement ring on her finger. There’s truly no one like her, and he loves her for it. “It looks beautiful, Dr. Browne,” he teases.
“It’s just until we get something nice. And when we do, it better not be anything big or tacky or expensive. But that’s just my preference. You know— just a suggestion,” she finishes with a smirk.
“Right,” he chuckles. “And I suggest you kiss me now.”
“That can be arranged,” she quips back teasingly, smiling as she leans in with her hands on his bare chest.
Neil smiles into the kiss, his lips pressing against hers. His hands find her hips and pull her in until they’re flush against each other. They crash onto the bed in a frenzy of blankets, Neil settling on top of her gently, and he sees Claire’s beaming smile and the black ink around her ring finger.
It’s the last thing he sees before he moves in to kiss her again. Neil tastes her lips on his, and thinks proposing to her was the best suggestion he ever made.

Part two of Neil Melendez One Shots!
(Continuation of One Shot #1: Nightmares)
-- Right as the front door closed behind you, you had already taken off your jacket and most of your clothes as you headed straight for the shower. Yes, you wanted sleep, but you felt tired and sore, and nothing could fix that better than a hot shower. Well, maybe Neil’s large hands massaging down your back would feel better. You shook your head again, angry at yourself for thinking those things about your superior, even if it wasn’t the first time that you had thought inappropriate things about him. He was a mentor, and not only to you. Anyway, if he had feelings for anyone, it was Audrey Lim. The name left a stirring rage in your chest as you thought of her perfect body and her attentiveness that never seemed to falter. No wonder he looked at her with such longing. The rest of your shower went by in a wink, and you were changed and ready to sleep. You expected to fall asleep before your head even hit the pillow, but that didn’t seem to be the case. Your head had hit the pillow, yet your eyes were wide open. You forced your eyes shut and pursed your lips when you felt a headache creeping up on you. To try and prevent that, you rolled over and reached for the bottle of Tylenol resting on your bedside table. You swallowed it with a healthy gulp of water and you laid back down, your eyes facing the ceiling. Soon, you felt your body give way to the dark abyss that encased your vision as you closed your eyes. You would have preferred no dreams at all, but of course ever since your mother passed and your family left you behind after blaming you, your mind decided it was a good idea to give you strangely vivid nightmares. You couldn’t control them, your therapist couldn’t help you, and you had no one to turn to as you didn’t want to constantly disturb Neil. You tried thinking of Neil as you saw your nightmare play out like an evil show in front of your tear-filled eyes. Your mother was screaming your name, her nails digging oddly long marks into the ground as she got dragged away by something you were unable to see clearly. You tried helping, you really did, but you quickly learned through experience that there was nothing you could do for her. You tried to help every time you had a nightmare, but it never worked. She continued screaming as blood slowly starting leaking from her now shaved-down-to-the-bone nails. You struggled against whatever was holding you back, but you couldn’t move. You couldn’t see your mother anymore, but you could still hear her as if she was right in front of you. All you saw was your father and your brother telling you how it was your fault she was dead, how if you had come home an hour early you would’ve caught her trying to overdose and help stop her. You felt hot tears streaming down your face and your throat was rubbed raw, you couldn’t feel anything below your neck. It was all cold, everything was cold and everything was fading away into an eerie darkness. One last echo of an angry chorus of yelling threw itself at you before you jolted awake, sweat peppering your face and the back of your neck. You quickly wiped your tears away and got out of bed, heading straight to the washroom to throw cold water on your face to regulate your breathing. When you re-entered your bedroom, your eyes flicked to the alarm clock which read 2:57am. You knew what you wanted to do, but you also knew how irrational it would be. What are the chances that Dr. Melendez would even be awake, let alone be willing to help you at this ungodly hour? Deciding to just go with your gut and give it a shot, you picked up your phone and squinted as the screen lit up brightly. You had a couple texts from Shaun, who was trying to ask you about ‘female behaviour’ once again. You ignored his messages and instead clicked on Neil’s contact number, which he had given you under the instructions that you should call him whenever you need him. And you really need him now. --

Requests
Oneshots
Oneshots can typically take me anywhere from 45 minutes to a few days. I never go below 1,000 words, and I have only gone up to 4,000, however, I plan to improve and go past that. Keep in mind that when requesting oneshots they will take me some time to do, especially if I’m busy.
Example ;; Mycroft Holmes (BBC Sherlock) x Reader oneshot in which the reader is hired as Mycroft’s personal assistant. Over time, Mycroft discovers that he loves her after the reader takes a bullet for him.
Prompts
Imagines
Imagines don’t take me more than an hour usually. I keep them below 1,000 words, but typically they’re past 200 to 300 words long. When requesting these you can usually expect them to be done within in hour or so, unless I’m busy.
Example ;; Atticus Finch (TKAM) imagine where he is the readers lawyer.
Prompts
Drabbles
Drabbles take me less than 30 minutes. They’re short and always exactly 100 words. I’d usually finish this anywhere between 5 to 15 minutes.
Example ;; Gabriel (Good Omens) angst drabble.
Headcanons
Depending on the request, these may vary from a couple hours to a few days if I need ideas. I don’t have a word limit for these, however, usually they are over 7 bullet points long.
Example ;; Headcanon for President of the Hospital Marcus Andrews (The Good Doctor) who’s dating a surgeon who works for him.
Preferences
Preferences are typically pretty quick for me to do depending on which fandom and how many characters you want. No word limit.
Example ;; First kiss preference for Commodus and Maximus (Gladiator).
Aesthetics/Moodboards
Aesthetics/Moodboards are typically just a collage of photos for a character you want. It can be a character x reader collage, or even a specific character au that you want.
Example [ 1 ] ;; An Arthur Fleck (Joker) x Reader aesthetic.
Example [ 2 ] ;; An Agent! Mycroft (Sherlock) moodboard!
Ships
Ships are a small things for followers/readers to interact and ask me which characters I ship them with from a specific fandom.
Example ;; For Marvel: I have brown hair, hazel eyes and I’m 5’ 9. I love to read, write and explore. I enjoy talking to people, however, I typically get really anxious which causes my hand or legs to shake...

The Good Doctor MBTI.
Shaun Murphy [ISTJ] : ISTJs are task-oriented, and so conscientious in their handling of details and standard procedures, that they are often stereotyped as “establishment” types, weighed down by the gravity of the institutional priorities. Although ISTJs are indeed careful, and concerned to preserve what has been proved to be worthwhile, these characteristics are only a part of the type’s approach to the world--the part that most people see. ISTJs are fundamentally Introverted Sensates, with a highly subjective, original turn of mind. ISTJs are unparalleled realists. However, they don’t concern themselves with external reality as such. They relate to facts about external reality, and largely by way of the mental constructs determined by Extraverted Thinking: words, numbers, schemes, diagrams, hierarchies, methods, and codes of conduct. (Lenore Thomson)
Andrew Glassman [ISFJ] : Like ISTJs, ISFJs are most comfortable with facts and information about concrete reality. However, where ISTJs organize and apply what they know impersonally, preferring numbers, schemes, or logical premises. ISFJs relate to the outer world in a decidedly personal way, with Extraverted Feeling. ISFJs are highly alert to behaviors and gestures that suggest another’s emotional attitude, needs, or expectations, and they generally acquire knowledge that allows them to be of service--preferably to one person at a time. ISFJs tend to personalize what they do, using their skills on behalf of an employer, an administrator, or a customer: someone who needs their assistance and expertise. (Lenore Thomson)
Claire Brown [ENFP] : ENFPs are the most optimistic of the types--not because they’re determined to see the positive, but because they focus on helpful possibilities. They grasp patterns quickly, but their interest in them is decidedly personal. They see people’s potential for loving, for learning, for making a difference, and they look for ways to nurture and encourage it. ENFPs have little patience for administrative detail. They prefer to think on their feet, as a situation is happening. Moreover, they have a hard time sacrificing their options to an organized routine. ENFPs have a steadfast refusal to make absolute judgments. These types simply won’t declare one option is inherently better than another. They want to be able to do it all, and they invariably have more on their plate than they can reasonably handle. This is one reason ENFPs are so keenly aware of systematic injustice. (Lenore Thomson)
Jared Kalu [ISFP] : ISFPs are frequently drawn to medical specialties, where their perceptual acuity has practical application. ISFPs seem to know what to look for, and they treat all creatures with respect and dignity. Whenever this sensitivity comes into play in the social arena, ISFPs have a sense of mission. Like other types who use sensation to deal with the outer world, ISFPs learn by experience, and they need hands-on contact in order to know something well. However, they don’t require perceptual novelty to stay interested in something. When their judgment is engaged, ISFPs are focused, contained, and nearly inexhaustible. They think in terms of values--what’s right in the situation at hand. They lose sight of themselves as objects, rushing in where angels fear to tread. (Lenore Thomson)
Neil Melendez [ESTP] : ESTPs are realists of the first order. Like all Sensates, they are geared by their senses and enjoy action and stimulation. But unlike the ESFP, who is drawn to Introverted Feeling to an interest in people, the ESTP is galvanized by Introverted Thinking toward situations involving risk, strategy, and serious competition. These types are quintessential adventurers. They like the thrill of the game, and they generally play out their need for action and challenge in fast-moving careers that require think-on-your-feet decisions and split-second coordination. They know far more than they’re able to express about what’s likely to happen and what they can do to prevent or support it. Their competitive drive is very strong. ESTPs are charismatic, often charming. (Lenore Thomson)
Marcus Andrews [ENTJ] : ENTJs reason conceptually, with deductive and inductive logic. But these types are not content to negotiate structural relationships within a system. ENTJs want to be in charge of a system, to improve it, to realize its functional potential. Such types are not advocates and administrators so much as natural leaders--decisive, charismatic, impelled by the courage of conviction, and able to manage power with confidence and determination. ENTJs are oriented by the objective, rational, Judging viewpoint of Extraverted Thinking. They’re alert to aspects of an organized system that have no functional purpose, and they’re drive to rid the system of their influence. ENTJs believe nothing exists that can’t be improved. ENTJs have an abiding sense of their own authority, and they often find themselves in a position to lead. (Lenore Thomson)
Morgan Reznick [ISTP] : ISTPs relate to the world by way of Introverted Thinking, a form of logic that’s tied to their direct perceptual experience. It works in the background of awareness, guiding actions, facilitated by visual and tactile cures. ISTPs have to be active in order to use it. They need hands-on involvement so they can feel a situation’s impact and gauge the effects of their behaviors on it. Introverted Thinking is subjective. It operates by way of participation and a grasp of what’s structurally possible in an immediate situation. They prefer to remain independent, to get paid for their time and skills, and not for their loyalty to a particular institution. ISTPs are either “with” a situation or they’re not. If they’re not, they will make no effort to pretend they are. They won’t exhibit initial interest, explain, or apologize for their inattention or lack of compliance. ISTPs may do something they don’t want to do for someone they respect, bu they will not fake goodwill in the process. (Lenore Thomson)
Alex Park [ESTJ] : ESTJs see reality as a kind of puzzle whose pieces must fit together logically if they are so understand the whole picture. They have an incisive understanding of organization and complexity. ESTJs reason conceptually, one step at a time. The problems that absorb them are too complicated to be solved by common sense or intuition. They require the negotiation of structural relationships by way of logic. Anything that can’t be proved by hard evidence is ruled out. ESTJs see themselves more as advocates--people whose position and knowledge permit them to represent a system and to negotiate its structure for others. They want to know where they stand in the assessment of others, and they want this standing to be deserved. To skip a step or to be rewarded for merely personal reasons strikes them as unfair and a potential threat to the system as a whole. (Lenore Thomson)

Blackout in the Blizzard
Happy Melendaire Monday everyone!
As promised here is your fix of this first week without any TGD episode! Feedback are welcome as much as kudos 😁. Hope you'll enjoy it ❤️
Here is the prompt :
Claire Browne and Neil Melendez find themselves stuck in the elevator of the hospital on their way out because of a storm that cuts the power. Neil then addresses Claire's strange reaction earlier in the day when she discovered that Neil and Lim were dating outside the hospital.
READY ?
You can also go on AO3 to read by the way!
Tumblr media
San Jose was hit by a Category Three snow storm and, as any storm of that magnitude would, it did a lot of damage. Claire's shift was extended by six hours as a result of the extra patients and the lack of employees due to the time of the year
During this same shift Claire had learned that her superior, Dr. Neil Melendez, was apparently sharing more than a professional relationship with her other superior, Dr. Audrey Lim.
Dr. Browne had tried not to have any reaction to this news, but deep down this information annoyed her although she didn't quite understand why. She couldn’t help but wonder what Melendez saw in her. It wasn't that Dr. Lim wasn’t great, it was that she just couldn't picture them together. It didn’t make any sense to her. This thought was interrupted when the doors of the elevator opened to reveal none other than Dr. Neil Melendez himself.
She flashed him a friendly smile as she walked in, reaching for her intended floor button but stopped as it was already lit: his shift was apparently over too as they were going to the same level. She was about to open her mouth to break the silence when the elevator made a sudden jerk and stopped dead, leaving them both in a cabin half-lit by security lights.
As if her day wasn’t crappy enough, she had to get stuck in an elevator with her boss with whom she didn't particularly wanted to spend time with. Fate was apparently angry at her. Melendez tried to be reassuring, "the emergency generators shouldn’t take long to take over, with a storm like this, a power cut was predictable.”
“Yes, even if this power outage could have occurred after I left the hospital. It would have been nice to have some luck for once. You know, getting stuck in an elevator wasn’t really on my bucket list, nor my to do list of the day–”
“Especially with the most boring person in the world?” Neil gave a frank laugh at the decomposed expression of his resident, but his remark didn’t have the desired effect since Claire frowned a little more:
"It's not really the word I would have chosen to describe you, nor the way I was going to finish that sentence. It's just that this shift has been long and I would prefer to go home and collapse on my bed after a long warm shower. But you're right, the backup generators should start soon; what else could go wrong, right?"
Unfortunately, the power wasn’t restored five minutes later, nor twenty minutes later. It has now been half an hour since they were originally stranded in the hospital elevator cabin. Neil had been the first to sit down after realizing their phones had no signal and they couldn’t tell anyone about their situation. It had taken Claire a few extra minutes to sit by his side. The only benefit to this situation was that hospital elevators were wider than conventional lifts, leaving them more room to comfortably extend their legs, even though Claire had chosen to pull her knees to her chest.
Since they had exchanged banalities about the patients they had treated a little more than ten minutes ago, a silence had settled. But this silence was strangely uncomfortable. Claire didn’t know what to say without indirectly talking about the burning piece of information the residents had found out concerning the two attendings; so she opted for silence, keeping it quiet was better than saying something she would regret. But Neil decided otherwise.
“I guess the whole hospital knows by now.” Claire wasn’t sure what he was talking about
“About what? Us being stuck in the elevator? I strongly doubt it.”
“No, I was talking about–”
Now she knew what he meant so she cut him off, “About you and Dr. Lim? Probably, although it's none of my business.”
Neil gave her a weird look. "You don’t approve, do you?"
Claire looked up at the ceiling, trying to find a way to put an end to this conversation because the last person she wanted to have this with was him, especially in a confined space where she couldn't leave. "Like I told you, this is none of my business. You sleep with whoever you want.”
Neil glanced at her, a strange expression on his features. "It's funny, I could have sworn the opposite from the expression on your face earlier today. Claire, you can express yourself freely: we are stuck in an elevator, so right now I’m a normal person, not your boss. I will not blame you for your opinion since I’m the one who asked for it. Let's say this space is a neutral zone, okay?"
Claire hesitated for a few seconds, he wasn’t going to let it go if she was truthful, so she went for the easiest way out: lying. "Fair enough. It’s not that I don’t approve of it, it just reminded me of my relationship with Jared. We were two colleagues who were a little more than that. People knew at the hospital and you may not know but that's what made Dr. Coyle think that I was an easy target to hit on. It's what started the whole incident that followed; it complicated things between me and Jared and so he left. Not entirely because of me, but partly I think. Since this, I tell myself that it’s better to stay professional and to not mix private and professional life with my colleagues or superiors."
What she said wasn’t entirely false; the story was true, it was just not relevant to Dr. Melendez's request.
“I didn’t know that your relationship with Jared had been a factor in the incident with Dr. Coyle. I am sorry to hear that.” Neil nodded.
Claire smiled shyly, slightly ashamed of having lied.
“It's not your fault if Dr. Coyle thought that because I had a relationship with a member of the medical team, I'd be willing to sleep with anyone on the staff at the hospital.” She laughed
“No, indeed.” Neil chuckled.
Claire was relieved: the bullet was dodged. She wondered why she felt the need to lie or why she was embarrassed by the situation. She knew that the story she had just told was not the reason she was upset by the fact that Neil was sleeping with Lim. Lying to herself and others, though, had always been easier than facing her own emotions and feelings. Emotions and feelings were always leading her toward disappointment.
Neil noticed the closed expression on Claire's face, which was the same he had seen earlier. "Dr. Browne, are you okay?”
Claire pulled herself together and turned her head to look her superior in the eyes, "Yes, of course. I’m just starting to wonder when we are going to get out of here. It must have been an hour now, the power should be back. It's weird.” She suddenly stood up, feeling uncomfortable by their proximity. She needed to put some distance between them, so she started looking at the buttons on the elevator like they were the most interesting thing on earth.
“Not as weird as the expression on your face. It tells me you’re obviously annoyed by something, like it was earlier today. What is it you’re not telling me?” Neil had gotten up too.
Claire pretended not to hear. “Unbelievable! Even the emergency button won't work.”
“When you’re done avoiding the subject, maybe you’ll be able to answer my question?” Neil was growing annoyed by her avoidance. Claire pretended not to understand. “I don’t know what you’re talking about. I’m not avoiding anything. Is the lack of space making you lose your mind or something?” She was growing less and less comfortable by the situation.
Neil raised an arm in the air, clearly exasperated. “I think you know very well what I'm talking about.”
“No, as a matter of fact, I don’t,” she said, crossing her arms over her chest. Neil shot her a meaningful look.
“Why are you so stubborn?” he retorted.
“Stubborn, me? That’s rich coming from the most stubborn person in this hospital; not to mention most annoying and endowed with an oversized ego!”
Claire realised she might have gone too far, placing a hand over her mouth in surprise. “I'm sorry, that's not what I meant–”
Neil cut her off abruptly: “No, don’t be sorry, a little honesty is refreshing! And since we’re being honest with each other, why don’t you give me your real opinion about my relationship with Dr. Lim.”
“I've already given it to you, I have nothing else to say. Anyways, why is it so important to you what I think about your relationships? And while we're being honest, why did you really kick me off your team? Was it because your ego couldn’t stand that a woman had a better idea about how to treat a patient? Or was it just pure stupidity? Because, thinking about it, last year Shaun was convinced he could save a young boy’s life and was ready to take a bone marrow sample on the patient to prove it, against your orders. When you found out, you simply kicked him off the case. But you didn’t kick him off your team. So, why did you try so hard to have me out of your’s for good?”
Neil was taken aback by her outburst: he definitely hadn’t seen coming. “It doesn’t matter, Shaun was– You’re changing the subject. Why does Dr. Lim and I seeing each other bother you?”
Claire raised both arms in the air, far beyond exasperated. “You are unbelievable! For the thousandth time: I don’t give a shit about your relationship with Dr. Lim. Do you really think that you are so interesting that everyone has to validate you and be on the lookout for the smallest of facts about you and your whereabouts?”
“I don't think that–”
“Bullshit! Why do you care so much about what I think about you being involved with her?”
“Because I think you lied to me about the real reason why you disapprove of it so much!”
Without realizing it, they had drawn close to each other, standing only inches apart. It was as if they were magnets, attracting each other to be as close as possible.
Claire asked sharply, “why would I need to lie to you?”
Neil looked at her intently and finally gave in. “For the same reason I had to lie to you about why I kept you away from my team for as long as I could.” His voice was so intense that Claire had goosebumps. Her gaze was unconsciously passing between Neil's beautiful dark eyes and his lips. The tension between them was tangible. Gathering what was left of her boldness, she asked him in a voice less assured than she would have wanted, "And what is the reason, Doctor Mel–"
Neil didn’t let her finish her sentence before his lips crashed on hers. The violence of the kiss pushed her against the wall of the elevator. Neil pressed his body against hers while Claire held tight onto his neck, allowing herself to be completely carried away by the feeling. And that's when she realized what she had refused to admit for months: the undeniable attraction she felt for the arrogant and annoying Neil Melendez.
Neil slid one of his hands from her face to her waist, touching the side of her breast. His hand passed smoothly over her back bringing her as close to him as possible. His lips left hers and went for her neckline, murmuring her name in a voice full of the desire he had been refusing himself for so long.
He often made bad decisions, and the decision to give in to his urge would surely prove to be the worst of them. But right now, he would not trade that moment for anything in the world. So he went back to her plump lips, kissing her like their lives depended on it: and in that moment, maybe it did.
The passionate embrace abruptly ended when the lights of the elevator came back on and the lift resumed its way to the ground floor. Neil and Claire parted breathlessly, not quite sure what had just happened. Neil looked at Claire, his gaze full of multitudes of emotions passing through too quickly for her to understand them fully. The elevator stopped. The doors opened. He stroked her cheek gently and huskily said, “That's the reason why Claire.”
A second later, Neil pulled back and left the elevator, leaving Claire stunned and touching her lips absentmindedly. She was unsure of what just happened or what it meant; but one thing was sure: this experience would not leave her mind for a long time.

The Trifecta
Tumblr media
“You made flirting gestures.” Neil paused as he heard Shaun’s voice. He had been looking for his resident for over half an hour now. Neil made to enter the room but stopped when Claire’s voice reached his ears.
“No, I didn’t.” She replied, sounding confused.
“Yes, you did.” Shaun insisted. Neil moved closer to the threshold and hid behind the door, watching as Shaun took his chart back from his coworker. “You brushed your hair back. Right hand, side sweeping.”
“At Dr. Melendez?” Claire looked at him in disbelief. “No, I don’t think so.” When it was clear he wasn’t convinced, she tried again. “Shaun. No.”
“Yes.” He then proceeded to launch into an explanation. “You were at the nurses’s station and he said ‘Good for you,’ and you said ‘Yeah, right, I just broke about eight rules,’ and smiled and giggled and brushed your hair back.”
There was a brief moment of silence in which Neil pondered Shaun’s words. He hadn’t noticed anything unusual about Claire. It was the way she always behaved with him. ‘Smiled and giggled’, Neil had never seen Claire in anything but a good mood.
“It’s possible you have ringworm.” Shaun concluded as Claire shook her head.
“Shaun, sometimes people toss their hair just ‘cause it’s in their face.” She stared disbelievingly up at him, neither of them taking notice of Neil walking into the room.
“Murphy.” The attending surgeon called out, gathering the duo’s attention. It didn’t pass Neil by that Claire’s cheeks heated up at the sight of him. “I’d like you to elaborate on your idea.” He said, struggling to take his eyes off the female resident.
“My terrible idea?” Shaun asked. Claire attempted to take a few steps back and make herself as small as possible.
“That’s the one.” Neil confirmed, sparing a brief glance towards his subordinate and catching her eye as she involuntarily let out a small chuckle.
Turning his back as Shaun once again focused his attention on Claire, Neil left the room and waited for the autistic resident to catch up to him, all the while thinking back to his small moment with Dr. Browne just hours earlier.
By the time Neil’s shift ended, he was ready to just collapse on any given surface and fall asleep right there. He was beyond exhausted, both mentally and physically, yet he still wanted to see if he could talk to Claire.
Perhaps if it were any other resident, Neil would’ve wanted to set the record straight that he wasn’t interested in any way or form. But with Claire...
She was special, there was no denying it. Since the moment Neil first saw her coming into work on her first day, he knew she had the potential to be great. Despite competing with Jared, Claire proved her worth over and over again and Neil would be unable to protest should someone accuse him of preferring her over the other residents.
Alas, he was a loyal fiancé and no matter how wrong his developing feelings for his subordinate were, Neil never once considered the possibility of cheating on Jessica. She was someone he loved very dearly and they were set to marry. And no matter what Jessica said, Neil knew she would eventually change their mind and they would be a perfect little family sometime in the future.
He was going to talk to Claire, and nothing else.
“Dr. Melendez.” A small gasp fell from Claire’s lips as he suddenly emerged, blocking her path to the main doors.
“Can we talk?” He asked in a soft voice, lifting his head to see if anyone was paying them any attention. “Alone?”
“Uh, sure.” Claire agreed, tucking her jacket closer to her body as she followed him to the elevators.
The ride to his office was quiet, with Claire fidgeting beside him as Neil mulled over what he was going to say. Perhaps it should have been better for them to talk over an outdoor walk but Neil wanted complete privacy; something they wouldn’t have gotten should they be out there in the open.
He motioned for Claire to sit down on a guest chair as he put down his suitcase and perched himself on top of his desk.
“I heard you talking to Dr. Murphy this morning.” Neil cleared his throat, rolling up the sleeves of his shirt in a way to distract himself. “About, uh... flirting.”
When he raised his head, Claire was looking out of the window. Her cheeks painted red as her Adam’s apple bobbed up and down.
“I’m sorry.” Claire replied sincerely, biting her lip. “I didn’t realize what I did until Shaun told me.”
“Honestly...” Neil leaned forward and placed two fingers under her chin, gently lifting her head so he could look into her eyes. “I was flirting as well.”
“Y-you were?”
He nodded sorrowfully. “It can’t happen, though. I’m getting married in a month, Claire. And last I heard, you had an on-again-off-again relationship with Jared.”
Claire swallowed, staring at him with widened eyes.
“I love Jessica, she’s the love of my life. Or so I thought until you became my subordinate. I have grown feelings for you.” Neil smiled softly. “But I’m loyal to my fiancée.”
“I understand.” Claire returned the smile, sinking into the chair. “Can we... can we still be friends?”
“Of course.” Her boss rose from his seat. “I wouldn’t want anything else. For now, we’re with other people. I don’t know what the future holds but I still want to be on good terms with you.”
Claire also stood up and hesitated just before she wrapped her arms around his waist in a quick hug. Neil was surprised but nonetheless hugged back and smiled when they broke apart.
“Have a good night, Claire.”
“You too, Neil.”

Melendaire: Bundle of joy
Tumblr media
Greetings everyone! I just finished writing my first Melendaire fic. It’s not what I had in mind when I spoke about writing a Melendaire fic in this post and in this post. Don’t worry - it’s still in the making.
A/N: So the idea for this ficlet came to me at night. For some reason, plotlines form inside my head when I’m in bed instead of when I’m behind my desk. How logical. For those who are familiar with the subject, the idea for the patient’s condition was inspired by the Duchess of Cambridge’s early pregnancy symptoms. Please know that I am by no means a medical expert, so I decided to steer away from describing any medical treatments etc., and it isn’t even relevant for this fic in the first place. Regardless, I hope you enjoy! And yes, I named the little one after the man who gave life to our favorite attending <3
“Excuse me, Dr. Browne?”
Claire turned around from her leaning position against the counter of the nurses station, clipboard in hand. Her shift had only just started and she had been informed of every minor or large change in her patients’ conditions,  but still she wanted to make sure she was aware of every little detail. It’s who she was, and she preferred to work this way.
“Mr. Cartwright, good morning. How’s your wife doing so far?” Mrs. Cartwright had been admitted to the hospital a few days prior, suffering from symptoms that almost immediately led to the diagnosis hyperemesis gravidarum, due to her severe nausea and vomiting and the fact that she was in the early stages of pregnancy.
“Last night she was doing much better, but now she’s feeling nauseous again,” the man, Claire thought him to be in his early thirties, looked exhausted and almost ready to collapse with worry. Beside him, the young couple’s first-born, a lovely toddler with dark hair who was clutching his teddy bear closely against his little chest, looked up at her with a mixture of seriousness and curiosity in his large brown eyes.
“I’m afraid she won’t be able to keep it in much longer, and she doesn’t want little Nicholas to witness that. We don’t want to distress him, you know?” Claire nodded, and gave the young father a reassuring smile. A hospital was not an ideal place to bring your child, but she instinctively understood that bringing him was the only choice they had had. She felt sorry for the couple, and for the little boy as well. His parents not only had to worry about the mother and their unborn child’s condition, but also about their son who was clearly not supposed to be here. There was only one thing she could do to ease some of their trouble.
“Do you want me to keep an eye on the little one?” Mr. Cartwright’s face lit up, the young doctor’s suggestion clearly made him feel better. “If you could, yes please. Nicholas was supposed to stay at his grandmother’s, but she had somewhere else to be and now she’s trapped in a traffic jam on her way here.” Mr. Cartwright shrugged, and as if the little guy sensed his father’s frustration and dissatisfaction with the current situation, he started to whimper and pull on his father’s arm, as if he attempted to drag his father back to the room where his mommy was.
“I understand, sir. I’ll keep an eye on him for you. I’ll also send a nurse to assist your wife,” she offered, with a reassuring smile. Though they were closely monitoring the young woman, there was no immediate cause for serious concern, but Claire was able to sense unerringly what they needed most in this situation. Her shift had only just started anyway, and there were no patients who required her immediate attention.
“Nicholas?” The boy’s gaze flew from Claire’s at the sound of his father’s voice, and he curiously looked up at him. “Will you help Dr. Browne with her very important work while I go check up on mommy?” The boy’s face momentarily fell, but when he looked up at Claire again, who smiled sweetly at him, he couldn’t help but mimic her facial expression.
“Hey Nicholas, my name is Claire. Can I tell you a secret?” Claire whispered conspiratorially. Nicholas nodded, his eyes large with mischief. Secrets were good. Claire reached out to him to take his hand. Without hesitation, the toddler let go of his father’s large hand and took Claire’s smaller hand in his instead. She winked at the boy’s father and pulled Nicholas a bit closer to him to whisper in his ear.
“Once we’re done with our very important work, we will go on a treasure hunt to find the best candies and lemonade this hospital has. Would you like that?” The boy smiled a full set of perfectly white milk teeth and reached up to her so Claire could pick him up. As she did so, she automatically placed the boy on her hip and turned towards the nurses station once more, where she found nurse Fryday sitting behind one of her computers, acting like she was fully occupied by the charts on her screen, while in truth she was fighting the urge to look up at Nicholas, who was now waving his little hand at her.
“Nurse Fryday, could you please walk Mr. Cartwright back to room 401 and see if there’s anything you can do to help his wife?” Nurse Fryday nodded, a small smile playing on her lips. Little Nicholas Cartwright had everyone in the unit wrapped around his little fingers – patients, doctors, nurses..  even the stern ones like nurse Fryday. “I’m right on it, Dr. Browne.”
Claire smiled gratefully at the older woman, who quickly disappeared from view, along with Mr. Cartwright.
“Alright, here we go,” Claire reached over the counter to take a white paper sheet from the printer and a pen.
As she bent forward, her neckline came within reach and Nicholas happily grabbed it. “No, no Nicky,” she good-heartedly rebuked him, disentangling his chubby fingers from her blouse. “We don’t want to get into trouble by stretching out my clothes at the wrong places, right? ”
Nicholas let go but kept studying her intently as she assembled her supplies. “Now, do you want to help me take notes?” Nicholas nodded solemnly, a determined look at his face. “Wait,” Claire reached out once more time to bring out an empty clipboard. “There you go.” It took her some time to attach the piece of paper to it and when she finished, he proudly took it from her, clearly impressed by the important ‘task’ that he had been assigned with.
As Claire turned her attention to her clipboard once more, Nicholas frowned and furiously began to attack the empty sheet with his pan.
“Claire?” Claire flinched at the sound of his voice. Her friend and colleague, Dr. Shaun Murphy was now standing behind her. “Good morning, Shaun,” she cheerfully replied, her face positively radiant as she turned to greet him. Shaun smiled to himself. Smiles were contagious after all.
“Claire, why is there a baby on your hip?”
“This is a toddler, Shaun, and not a baby.”
“But why is it on your hip?”
“Because his father needed some space to fully focus on his mother,” Claire began to explain, but shrieked before she could finish her sentence. “Ow, Nicholas, stop!”
Now that his new friend wasn’t paying much attention to him or their very important work anymore, Nicholas had dropped his clipboard and instead had turned his attention to Claire – and her beautiful loose hanging curls. Those curls clearly seemed to fascinate and mesmerize him. Young Nicholas squinted, his eyes intent on the soft curls that bounced so perfectly at every movement she made with her head. Right now, his little grabby fingers had disappeared between them in order to be able to inspect them a little closer, and by the looks of it, he was very strong.
“Ow, ow! Nicholas! Let go!”
Shaun bounced on the balls of his feet, not making any gesture that showed he felt inclined to come to her rescue. “The baby is pulling on your hair,” he remarked, his eyes shining with plain glee.
“A toddler, – ow! – Shaun. He’s a toddler. And thanks for the diagnosis, I – ow! – somehow would never have come to that conclusion myself..”
“Are you being sarcastic?”
“Yes, and I’m in pain. Could you help me, please Shaun?” She was nearly pleading with him now. Every time she thought she had disengaged the small chubby fingers from her hair, the young tease managed to grab another fistful of hair.
“Here, let me,” a familiar and oh so pleasant and most welcome masculine voice came from her right. Two slightly calloused but tender hands touched her scalp, momentarily wrestled with the hands of the little invader, and won the battle. A small frustrated whine escaped Nicholas’s slightly puckered lips, but his anger was soon forgotten as he momentarily floated through the air in those strong hands, before he comfortably came to rest against a strong chest which smelled very, very nice if Claire had a say in it.
“There, there,” Dr. Neil Melendez soothed, gently and lovingly stroking the boy’s head. “You should know young man, that duty always comes before pleasure. Which means, we have to work hard first before we can go after the ladies, after work hours” Melendez looked at a blushing Claire and winked. Nicholas wasn’t affected by him as much as his new friend was. Instead, he looked at Melendez with undisguised interest as he sucked his thumb contentedly. Claire, who had stepped closer to the duo and absentmindedly started to rub Nicholas’s back, suddenly wasn’t so sure who had who wrapped around his finger now – but she instinctively knew that both men had that inexplicable talent to enchant others with their charm. Melendez and Claire shared a look and tenderly smiled at each other over the toddler’s head.
“I believe congratulations are in order?” Dr. Audrey Lim’s chuckle drifted closer as she made her way towards the small group that had assembled in front of the nurses station. A mischievous grin played on her lips as she leaned closer. “Too bad I didn’t bring my phone. I would have loved to record this moment and rub it under Park’s nose.”
“Rub what under Dr. Park’s nose?” Shaun inquired, clearly giving voice to the one thing they all (with the exception of young Nicholas) were wondering about.
“Park and I made a bet last Summer, after the ceremony. I told him I was sure that Dr. Browne-Melendez would present her husband with their first bundle of joy within a year of their marriage, and he disagreed. Park was determined the two of them would wait a little longer, at least until she finished her residency here.”
“So you mean to tell us, that Park and you made a bet on our wedding day?” Melendez’ eyes shone with mirth, and Claire’s blush deepened.
“Naturally. I blame the fantastic champagne the two of you served your guests with,” she added, as if the alcohol was the main reason why they made the bet in the first place. “If I win, he owes me one hundred bucks.”
Claire laughed nervously at Dr. Lim’s remark, while her mind automatically flew to the test that lay waiting for her in her purse. She had been suspecting something for a few weeks now, but wasn’t completely sure yet. So that morning, right before her shift started, she had gone to the pharmacy to pick up a test. She was going to run the test tonight, with Neil, in the privacy and peace of their home. She couldn’t wait to see the excited look on her face after telling him about her suspicions. But judging from the look he was giving her now, his brown eyes shining with hope and infinite love, she instinctively knew he somehow understood. Oh how she loved him. Her husband. Her Neil. The father of their very own growing bundle of joy.

The way she looked at him. The feelings from their previous relationship still resonated in her soul. This amazing doctor wanted authority and love at the same time.
You stared at her. The way she conducted herself you envied her. Envied her class, her maturity, the way she was with patients and staff. She was everything you wanted to be and more and sometimes you felt you weren’t good enough. Sometimes you felt being autistic made you unlikable or even worse unlovable and that sent you down a spiral of hatred for yourself.
Dr. Audrey Lim. One of the best doctors in your opinion. Someone you looked up to. But this someone made your love happy. She made him smile. Knowing people have history, especially people you know makes things awkward and tense. It made you self conscious. You thought you were making mistakes left and right and one of those mistakes you came to was Dr. Neil Melendez being with you. You felt you were the mistake.
Again for the millionth time that day Dr. Lim grazed Neil’s arm. It was soft and delicate, a touch a lover would give. It made you pause in checking a patient’s chart. Her grin, her hair, the way she knew she could get to Neil made you sick. Your breath got caught in your throat. Everything became worse in a second. As if you didn’t feel ashamed of your being now you felt insecure when it seemed to you Neil was flirting back. He accepted her touches! He laughed like they were the ones together.
You rubbed your arm sheepishly. Resisting the urge to cry.
Dr. Park saw how you acted and placed a friendly hand on your back, “hey are you okay?”
You wanted nothing more than to be swallowed by the earth. Wanting to disappear you nodded, “I’m doing just fine.” You quickly dashed away, wiping your eyes locking yourself in a closet. “Why couldn’t I just be normal? Why can’t I be like all the other people? Why can’t I be her?” Your back slid down against the shelves and you formed into a little ball of sadness. But there was another emotion coming to play. Anger. You were appalled that he would do something like that. It was if he was breaking all the promises, as if Neil was lying to you. You felt things were truly over.
Tumblr media
“Where’s y/n?” Neil asked as he unglued himself from Dr. Lim, his ex. “I thought I just saw her a few minutes ago?”
“I think you should go check up on her. See if she’s okay.” Dr. Park suggested. “When I talked to her she seemed out of it.”
“Sure. Do you happen to know where she is?”
Dr. Park gritted his teeth. He knew exactly where you were and why. “I have a feeling she’s in the closet...again.”
Neil became worried and quickly came to you. He opened the closet door and saw you sitting on the floor, crying.
“Baby, whats wrong? What happened?”
You laughed, “what happened? Are you that dense? I saw the way you were looking at her.”
Neil looked confused. “I don’t know what you mean.”
You stood up and wiped your eyes with your sleeves. “Dr. Audrey Lim. You and her had a thing in the past and she was making moves on you. And the funny thing is you let her. You let her touch you.”
“No I didn’t-”
“Oh my God, yes you did! I saw you! You can’t deny it!”
“Why are you yelling? Why are you getting so mad? Can’t we talk about this like grown ups?”
You ignored his pleas, “Grownups? Yeah, what you pulled back there was real mature, Neil. You know I’m distant, I’m broken, I have my things. I have autism. Some things are different for me. You said we were going to do this together. You said you loved me. And then you go off and flirt with your ex! This is not cool.” You tried walking away.
“Look what you saw back there, I don’t know. But I do know I have no feelings for Dr. Lim. That was a thing of the past.”
“But I saw you, Neil! I saw the way she looked at you and the way you looked at her! That connection is still there and I don’t know if it will ever go away! I’m hurt, and yeah sure I’m jealous! I’m jealous of her looks, her style, how she does her job, her connections, her mental state, her house, everything. I’m jealous of her because she still has you under her thumb and can make you go weak. I’m jealous that she can make you smile so big. Okay!” You argued to him.
Neil wrapped you in his arms. “There is no need for you to be jealous of her. She is just a friend. I’m sorry I hurt, I’m sorry I made you feel uncomfortable because you don’t deserve that. I meant everything that I said and I want to be with you and only you. What Dr. Lim meant to me in the past has changed now, I’ve changed. You’ve made me enjoy life, you made me smile. Just you walking in the room makes my day better. The truth is I can’t live without you princess. No matter what you think. I love you.” He caressed your cheek.
You teared up once more, not used to the validation and love that he was giving you. You always felt not good enough. It’s always smart to voice your opinion and how you felt, to speak the truth and be honest.
“I love you baby,” you kissed Neil’s knuckles.
Neil inched closer to you to greet your lips in a kiss, away from prying, judging eyes.
