Okay, I was tagged in this by two people, so i'll make two posts ahshbds thank you @carmina-solis and @badwriterrr 💖

So I think this challenge is to answer 11 questions asked by the person who tagged you, then ask 11 questions and tag others!

moving on with @carmina-solis ' questions:

1. How long have you been working on your WiPs?

I've been working on West Nile for over four years now!! I've also had The Song of Laisix in my mind for around the same time, but I've started seriously worldbuilding and planning for a year now. I've started on Homeward for about six months, and Cairo Dreamers only last week.

2. What is your favorite genre to write? Why?

My favorite genre is YA, mainly because I'm going through that phase in my life right now, but also because I love themes of self-discovery and identity. Fantasy is my favorite genre to write as well, urban or otherwise, because I've just been writing it for such a long time and I feel I can take more creative freedom in it than I can in other genres.

3. Is there a particular theme you notice cropping up in your work or characters?

I often like to play around with the "chosen one" archetype, and often find myself writing arcs that involve a loss of innocence or the discovery of unpleasant truths. I also really like writing kind, sweet characters who retain their kindness through it all.

4. Are there any themes you find not at all interesting?

Hmmm. Mainly it's just the ones I'm tired of seeing everywhere. Eurocentric settings, maybe, and a lot of eurocentric themes too, like the "white savior" trope or barbarism vs civilization or other borderline racist themes. I'm also tired of the "nice guy who sticks around for the girl after she gets heart broken by Bad Boy" trope.

5. How do you develop the themes in your work?

Usually by accident, haha. I write mainly character driven stories, so I go by the arc I feel is appropriate for that character to have. I create a character, detect the main crisis in that character's life, and solve it, and that solution is the theme. For example, in Song of Laisix, I have four main characters. All what they have in common is struggling with a larger-than-life destiny. As such, the theme of the story is the subversion of the "chosen one" trope.

6. What kinds of writing to you like to do?

Mainly novels, but I also do poetry.

7. Describe your favorite character's room or personal space.

Tezael's room is very messy. There's a big, airy window that lets a lot of sun and moonlight in. The walls are filled with char signs and all sorts of strange marks because of her practicing her magic. The ground and desk are strewn with all manner of scrolls and books. There's a coathanger nearby for her cloak. Her bed is rarely made, and she rarely sleeps in it- she sleeps on the window ledge.

8. Which of your characters would make the best detective?

Lin, most likely. She's trained as an assassin. Although paired with Aedion, who can fly and shapeshift, she'd be very formidable. They'd make a really great pair, tbh, I want to write this.

9. If you could , would you want to teach a course on writing or conduct a seminar?

Maybe when I'm older! I'd love to go into academia.

10. Which book has inspired you to write?

As much as it pains me to say it, Game of Thrones did a lot of inspiration for Song of Laisix, but it's minimal, really- Song of Laisix is radically different in theme, tone, and demographic. Hiromu Arakawa's Fullmetal Alchemist inspired a lot of the characters and themes in West Nile. Adventure Time isn't a book, really, but it also inspired Song of Laisix a lot. Also, Neon Genesis Evangelion, again, not a book, largely inspired Homeward.

I've noticed that most of these aren't even books lmao

11. Is there an author you can't stand (even if they're well-respected?)

JK Rowling, as much as it pains me as someone who grew up reading Harry Potter, is a known transphobe, homophobe, and racist. I also cannot stand Sarah J Maas. I just don't like her writing at all, and feel it has a lot of undertones, writing tropes, and themes I dislike.

1. What was your fav book growing up?

Howl's Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones (it still is), and Black Beauty by Anna Sewell.

2. What genre is your WiP?

West Nile is a YA urban fantasy. Song of Laisix is a YA/NA fantasy. Homeward is a YA sci-fi cyberpunk. Cairo Dreamers is a YA mystery drama.

3. Are any of your OCs based on people?

Not really. If they are, it's subconscious.

4. What is your guilty pleasure read?

Fanfic lmaoooooo. I've got my favorites saved in PDF version on my phone.

5. If you could summarize your WiP in three words, what would they be?

West Nile: what is law

The Song of Laisix: destiny is superficial

Homeward: just ask vika

Cairo Dreamers: idiots fight crime

6. What do you take inspiration from?

Lots and lots of anime and manga, even some cartoons. West Nile is inspired by Fullmetal Alchemist and Noragami. Song of Laisix is inspired by Adventure Time. Homeward is inspired by Cowboy Bebop and Neon Genesis Evangelion.

7. How do you deal with writer's block?

Usually I take a break for a couple of days, watch some anime, draw, get inspired once more. Music usually does the trick.

8. What's your fav TV show?

Fullmetal Alchemist (2003).

9. Are you in any fandoms? What are they?

I used to be in voltron fandom, but I largely left. Currently I'm trying to get into the mahou shoujo scene.

10. How long have you been writing your WiP for?

11. What was the first story you ever wrote, how old were you? What was it about?

THIS TAKES ME WAY BACK. The first time I formally sat down and wrote a story for myself, I was eight. It was about me having adventures with my two talking cats. I had a LOT of fun writing it.

I finished Far Cry New Dawn the other night but the entire time I played and afterward I had a lot of feels.

There's spoilers under here jsyk.

I used Leo as my Deputy in Far Cry 5 because I felt like the characters and the general scenario suited her. She appreciates rough and tumble and a bit of country living. Turns out she also really adores super gaudy redneck aesthetic like the trucks painted with eagles and pinups and bright purples with orange flames... that sort of thing. She's always been a plaids and overalls and boots kind of girl as it was. Futch if not butch without being a straight up lesbian (though she tests me sometimes I swear).

She grew up in Virginia near Richmond and went to school for an English degree. Meanwhile she did volunteer firefighting and by the time her degree was done, she decided she really liked the physicality and first responder type stuff of the firefighting work. Anything she could do with her degree was something she could do on the side. So she went into police academy training etc.

In the meantime, she met @mininuked Jacob Vaughn and he's an absolute snack. So while he may not have been the most charming or terribly suave, she gave him a shot and they fell hard for each other. Jacob was from Hope County, Montana. Somewhere in the Whitetail mountains if I recall what Shuu has told me. But when the two get engaged, she agrees to move back home with him.

She searches for a job in Hope County and sure enough the county sheriff is in need of more hands. Pronto. Things with the Peggies haven't gotten terribly out of hand yet, but it's definitely a situation that warrants more staff than they have. So they ask her to start immediately. Leo moves out there ahead of Jacob as he wraps up whatever it is he needs to wrap up in Virginia.

Then of course Far Cry 5 happens. Shit gets wild. Gets out of hand. Gets very dangerous. It all ends with her captive in the bunker with Joseph Seed as the bombs fall. No bueno but nothing to be done about it, truly. As far as she can assume, all her new friends, her family, Jacob... they're all dead. And even if they're not, what are her odds of surviving the tiny space with that mad man for however long until it's safe enough to return to the surface?

Fast forward seventeen years to the events of New Dawn. Leo has become the Judge. Joseph has held her (and her son) physically, emotionally, and mentally captive. The Judge persona is a tool for him in so many ways, but also a method for Leo to cope with the circumstances. She focuses on her son and on the New Edeners and occasionally isolates herself when she can just so that she can let the feelings of guilt and grief overwhelm her in private.

But lo and behold, when Joseph agrees to loan her out to an outsider (my Captain, Russell) to help in the fight against the Highwaymen, she's taken back to Prosperity. There she finds many of her friends from before the collapse are at least alive if not well. Among them, miraculously, is Jacob. When the bombs fell, he had been on the road, in the process of the move to reunite with her in Montana. He spent the years after that doing what he needed to to survive, eventually making his way West and culminating in joining up with Rush's team to head for Hope County to help the people there. Of course Jacob's real goal was to find any information on what happened to Leo without the expectation that she was still alive. Hell, he hoped she hadn't survived so that she wouldn't have to face the world as it was now.

There's a bit of a back and forth dance in a sense as Leo struggles with whether or not to reveal herself to Jacob or any of the others. Jacob grows suspicious of the Judge and tries to find evidence to back up the thought that maybe they're Leo. As she gets more comfortable, feels safer in letting him know, she eventually lets him know. First it's a delayed response to her name, then a gentle embrace from behind, and finally she stands before him without the mask, without the whole Judge getup. And bless him, he's patient through it all. Patient even after he knows for sure who she is.

But damnit they've been engaged for 18+ years. So once the two have settled in to being in each other's lives again, can be sure they're both just as supportive of each other as they had been before, that they'll accept each other's flaws and traumas and the lives they've led without each other in addition to what they had and could have, they finally get married.

And that's what this drawing is! Leo in a wedding dress that Kim, Carmina, and Shuu's Ahn help make out of an old shirt and some sheets/curtains. Leo isn't certain she's 'pretty enough' to be a bride at first, but she knows for sure she doesn't want to get married wearing her Judge outfit. But Jacob is older and beaten, too. Everyone is. And they've both been through so much to still end up at this point. If a literal apocalypse couldn't separate them, then wrinkles and scars and gray hair won't be doing it anytime soon. So she embraces her appearance and her marriage and any subsequent doubts she has are better founded.

They're also stories for another time. Cuz I've gone on for a lot longer than I usually do about my OCs when I post doodles. Seriously this is a lot of sharing to just say "This is my Deputy in her wedding dress! \o/"

Not really, ha. Maybe her hair? It’s really long.

She can cook pretty well but she usually doesn’t have the time. Baking, she hasn’t really been able to try. Not in a long time, at least.

She had two mothers until she was around 16. After they passed, family wise she was alone for a very long time. Now, the Ryes treat her as family and, at some point, Savannah would be her wife. She’s close with Kim and she’d never let anything happen to Carmina. She’s fast friends with Nick when they get him back-- she’s always glad to see a good man who has no issue being soft or saying “i love you”

28. Are they literate? Did they go to school? How long? What level?

She went to school up until shortly before the bombs fell, and her mothers did their best to teach what they could in the bunker.

29. What was childhood like?

The first 12 or so years were in Scotland. She was pretty healthy and well balanced. She enjoyed music, knew some instruments and got voice lessons. She was pretty athletic too, planning to do something military-centric when she was old enough. She and her mothers moved to the west coast of the states when she was twelve. It was maybe a year before the bombs fell.

30. What was adolescence like?

The first couple years were in the “bunker”, which was barely more than a multi-roomed basement shared between her and her mothers-- their neighbor, who’d offered them the shelter, didn’t make it in. He hadn’t been home when the bombs fell. The food ran out maybe two years in and she got to spend a year with her parents above ground before they were killed. The rest of her adolescence was spent mostly alone, living in a small shelter in the woods. She rarely had contact with people, only ever to trade. Once or twice she’d lead people out of the woods. It wasn’t until she was nineteen or so that she joined Rush.

31. What’s their current main conflict?

Loooooooooooots of self-hatred. Sure, there’s the whole highwaymen deal, but her hatred of herself makes it hard for her to make friends because she honestly doesn’t believe she deserves to have them.

32. What steps have they taken to overcome this conflict?

She doesn’t, really, until after that whole deal with Joseph and the apple and the bear. She of the mind it was just a drug trip, but it did make her think about who she is. Made her afraid she really had become something monstrous. After a breakdown and some help from Savannah, she actively tries to be a better, warmer person.

33. How have they changed over time?

Her trying to change helps her a lot. She goes from being pretty quiet, pretty grumpy, and antisocial, to being a happier, more open, but still pretty quiet woman. She teaches Carmina some songs on the guitar and plays more often for the people in Prosperity.

34. What’s their room look like right now?

I mean idk how the rooming situation is in Prosperity, but if she’s able to have a room that’s more private, she probably shares it with Savannah, after a point. Might have some plants and her guitar leaning in the corner. If it’s a shared room situation, she probably sticks to the bare minimum as to not take up too much space. Maybe a trunk under the bed with her clothes and a couple trinkets.

35. What are they like as a friend?

Literally if anything hurts you she will hunt it down. If she considers you a friend, she’ll make sure you know it.

36. What are they like as a partner?

Romantic partner, I’m assuming, she’s loving and protective, but often restrained. She doesn’t like to overstep boundaries.

37. Do they have any phobias?

Water. She can swim but fuck does she hate the feeling of something about to get her. Selene’s quest did not help that.

38. Did/do they go anywhere special for vacations?

Her parents took her to Disney once, but otherwise no.

39. Your character walks into a cafe. What do they order?

Raspberry hot chocolate.

40. What time do they go to bed, usually?

Whenever she’s done with the work for the day and has the chance to crash.

41. What’s their morning routine like?

Wake up → unbraid and brush hair → get dressed → find out what needs to be done for the day. Food if she remembers.

42. What’s the dumbest thing your character’s done?

Go after Selene’s weed bag and get attacked by a crocodile, what the fuck, we can find you more weed, we can’t casually find Mitali a new arm.

OOOOOOhhhhhh this is my kind question, I need to go look at pokemon lists. Oh fuck I’m back, she’s a midnight form lycanroc for SURE. Looks sorta scary, is cuddly, has the ability to maim.

I love these questions holy crap. Midnight form lycanroc because DUH. Houndoom. Pignite. Gengar. Yamask. Zangoose.

Oh this is pretty hard.... Violin-centric, maybe. And the tempo would be different depending on which point of her life. A lively one for early life, a mournful one for like…. 16-32. Happier again after that.

47. What was this character’s biggest turning point in their life, something that changed them almost completely?

Her mothers dying for sure! She went from being a hopeful young woman to almost spiteful. Killing the men who killed her parents was what sealed the deal.

48. What was their lowest point? What was their highest point?

Yup parent death is still gonna be lowest point. It was sudden and painful and no one involved deserved it. Highest point is when she finally breaks free of that depression and realizes she doesn’t have to hate herself anymore.

49. What are some themes tied to your character’s story?

Forgiveness, redemption, hope.

50. What are some motifs associated with your character?

Wild animals (mostly wolves), death and rebirth.

51. What were some inspirations for your character (people, movies, games)?

Big surprise but….. Mitali was definitely inspired in equal parts by Chloe Frazer and Nadine Ross (so Lost Legacy, in a nutshell). Also some great wolf related aesthetic pictures.

52. How are you and your character the same? How are you different?

Well this is an unexpectedly deep question that I’m going to avoid due to my own self-worth lol

53. Expectations vs Reality: what did you expect and what did you get with this character?

I expected to have her be very heavily military, but I ended up with a woman who only really wants to be a wife and just love the woman she marries with all of her heart and she wants to raise a kid and just have a good and happy family.

54. What does your character want, and what do they need?

She doesn’t know what she wants but she needs love. Any kind. Platonic, romantic, whichever.

55. What’s your character’s core trait? What’s their best trait? What’s their worst trait? What happens when these all interact with each other?

Protective to a fault. It can be both their best and worst trait, but their real worst trait is her self-hate. The two things interacting usually lead her to cutting herself off from friends so they’re “better off without her”.

56. What’s your overall goal with this character? Will they get a happy ending or will they succumb to their faults?

FUCK I want her to have a happy ending so badly. I’ll have to see how New Dawn ends first, but end goal is her marrying Savannah and eventually having a kid or two. Maybe twins???

She's got two dads! They're an older couple who are very loving. One is deaf. Recently I gave her a brother named Adam! He’s a cool dude. Bi and lovable.

She went through a lot of emotional issues during her teens, but her dads got her in therapy and were supportive and loving. A lot of who she is today comes from the love she got then.

Joseph fucking Seed decided to mess around in lives he should've left alone and now she's gotta clean up after him and try to protect her new friends.

32. What steps have they taken to overcome this conflict?

In the words of the lego movie: “shoot shoot shoot bullet bullet gun”

33. How have they changed over time?

Probably the biggest change was early teens to late. She was angry and spiteful and pretty depressed.

34. What’s their room look like right now?

Her room at home is covered in posters. But her room during 5 is… a bunker she found and claimed. She keeps it stocked, managed to put up a lesbian flag, and brought in the comfiest pillows and blankets she could.

Over affectionate to the max, both with romantic partners and her work partner Hudson. A bit protective. Jealous when it comes to romantic partners.

Most boil down to the death of loved ones

She used to get to pick a vacation spot once a summer when she grew up. Had to be reasonable, but she got to go to some great campgrounds, a couple good concerts, and Mammoth caves

A white tea and cookies

40. What time do they go to bed, usually?

Depends on the day.

41. What’s their morning routine like?

Wake up → try to sleep longer → eventually be convinced out of bed (either by herself or by Jess) → try to manage her hair if she didn't braid it → give up on that and wash face → get dressed → eat → start day

42. What’s the dumbest thing your character’s done?

“I won't get hurt jumping from that height”

43. What pokemon would your character be?

Whisicott! But shiny

I seriously love these questions. Whimsicott! Of course! And a sylveon. Gardevoir. Shinx. Rapidash. And Cinccino!! She’s fairy-centric.

Hmmm… Piano. Something upbeat, most of the time.

47. What was this character’s biggest turning point in their life, something that changed them almost completely?

Therapy in her early teens. It helped her cope with the fact she suffered under her birth parents and realize she’s worth so much more than they tries to make her feel

It’s still gonna be centered in her abuse, but it could also be the grudge she holds on the Seed family (minus Faith). Highest point is probably something to do with Jess.

Healing, unconditional love, leadership.

51. What were some inspirations for your character (people, movies, games)?

Adora is named after She-ra! Her brother too. Physically, I’m not sure. Mmmmaybe a little Nadine Ross, but even then, their hair is really the main similarity, and even then Adora’s is more afro than Nadine’s

52. How are you and your character the same? How are you different?

We’re about the same age? We both love Jess Black. That might be where the similarities end.

53. Expectations vs Reality: what did you expect and what did you get with this character?

I expected to have a gal who was nursing a crush on her partner in the force but instead i have a gal who’s a hundred percent in love with an archer she found locked in a cage by religious zealots.

54. What does your character want, and what do they need?

She wants some goddamn rest and the ability to go on a proper date with her girlfriend. She wants to see her dads again. She wants to be certain she won’t wake up and find herself kidnapped again.

55. What’s your character’s core trait? What’s their best trait? What’s their worst trait? What happens when these all interact with each other?

Is “sunshine” a trait? She’s a happy sort of person and likes to show it. Smiles a whole lot. Best trait is her willingness to trust. Worst trait… she can hold a grudge. For a LONG time. Holding a grudge can keep her from mending bridges, so it doesn’t act terribly well with happy & trusting. And when it does, she’s happy to hold a grudge lol.

56. What’s your overall goal with this character? Will they get a happy ending or will they succumb to their faults?

My goal is her to eventually have a happy life. She gets her “happy ending” in the shape of being with Jess until the day she dies, and even taking in a little girl to raise. She passes away in her sleep a long way down the line.

Willa inherited Sharky’s pyro-tendencies and Gabe wears his Mom’s old uniform. more details (and kind spoilery? a little bit) below ;p

Gabriel was the six year old son of the Savior of Hope County, Anna Bastion. After the bombs fell, Gabriel was raised by his mother’s colleague, Nash Louis and Nash’s boyfriend Sharky Boshaw. 8 months of life in the bunker and Nash gave birth to Willa Jolene. Together they grew up into a little family, until they ran out of food in the bunker. Then the Boshaw-Louis family set off into Hope County to party post-apocalypse style. Gabriel, however, struck out on his own to follow in his mother’s footsteps and help the people of this post-apocalyptic world . He traveled the west, eventually teaming up with Thomas Rush, but when Carmina Rye comes to Rush looking for help with the Highwaymen, Gabriel has to go back and walk the path his mom once did…
