Imagine part of why Neytiri is so insistent on Spider 'being with his own kind' is because Spider almost died in her arms when he was younger and it scared her so much that she closed herself off from him entirely. ik this doesn't super make sense canon-wise, but . . . idk, deal w it y'all.
Spider was maybe six or seven, barely old enough to go outside with the smallest size mask they had. He was with Lo'ak, Kiri, and Neteyam by the creek, Neytiri supervising from the treeline as she foraged. He was finally getting used to this whole outdoors thing, taking to it all quickly. His spare mask was glinting in the sunlight from the branch he'd hung it off of before joining his friends in the water. It was knee-deep for them, but nearly to his waist. Even though he was the oldest, the other three had already outgrown him.
It didn't feel like they were much bigger, though. After months spent together in the forest, it felt like the Na'vi kids had nearly forgotten he was human. Kiri had started helping him paint stripes on himself and Neteyam had promised to show him how to use a bow for his birthday that year. After a lifetime surrounded by adults in the lab, he was happy to be with his friends.
And then, he fell.
Neteyam had faked a lunge towards him and he'd tripped over a log in the water, falling head over heels into the currant. It wasn't bad at all standing up, but he was disoriented and the water was murky from all the mud they'd kicked up in their playing. His body was being sent further down the creek and it was suddenly too deep and Spider couldn't stand up and he didn't know how to swim. His mask hit something hard and came flying off, whisked away into the water. The sting of whatever hit his head was enough to make him gasp and then he was maskless and underwater—
It only took twenty seconds for a human to pass out in Pandoran air. Four minutes to die. That was for a grown-up and Spider was small for his age, Norm said so just the other day.
So, he shouldn't have been surprised when black dots filled his vision and he was just . . . gone.
Neytiri's children had been playing in the creek with the Sky People boy all morning. She was foraging for a specific herb, at her mother's request, and all four children were blessedly entertained splashing each other. She'd agreed to take Spider with them when she left the village that morning, Norm and Max looking beyond tired. Apparently, the boy had been staying up late to stargaze, meaning that they had to stay up late making sure he didn't decide to play with any of the lab equipment (again).
She looked over at the four of them, smiling softly as Lo'ak tried to climb up his big brother, slipping and sliding all over. A glint of yellow flashed in her peripheral and she turned away from them, smiling when she found the herb she'd been looking for all morning. It was perfect timing, too, right before they would head back to the village for lunch. She'd settle Lo'ak down for a nap, but Kiri and Neteyam would probably insist on trying to help her prepare their midday meal. She'd have to leave out some seasonings if she was going to feed Spider, but—
Kiri screamed. It wasn't the high-pitched squealing thing she'd been doing a few minutes before, when Spider and Neteyam had splashed her simultaneously. It was one of fear.
She whipped around, looking for an animal or injury or something. Her three children seemed uninjured, but they were splashing around wildly, looking for something.
For someone.
She was in the water before she could think, practically diving downstream. The water reached her knees at it's deeper point, too tall for the Sky Child. She should've known the current would pull him, that he was too small still, too young.
She caught a flash of pink skin and blond hair and reached down, pulling the limp boy from the water. His lips were turning blue and his mask was gone. She must've shouted for Neteyam to grab the spare hanging from the tree, because in the ten steps in took her to get back to her children, he'd climbed up and grabbed it, flipping switches on the battery back she didn't know he knew how to use.
She didn't let him go as she reached for the mask, able to hold him in one arm as she pressed the device to his face.
Please, please, she silently begged, praying. Her children were watching, the boy was . . . he was too fragile to be in such a place. She was foolish to bring him out of the safety of the lab.
Spider took in a sudden choking gasp of air, turning on his side. He coughed once, twice, water and spit hitting the inside of hie mask. He grimaced, before sinking into Neytiri's arms, falling back asleep instantly. She let out a sigh of relief, rocking back on his heels.
"He's alright, he's alright." She promised, looking at each of her children. Kiri was crying and her boys didn't look far behind.
She led the home without complaint from anyone, something that would be unusual under other circumstances. She went straight to the shack, meeting Norm inside the airlock. She handed him over easily, clenching her fists to hide how her hands shook.
She remembered Jake, nearly dying in his human body. Frail and desperate for air. Spider was a child, barely more than a baby. She could barely stand watching her mate suffer through humanity. It would be cruel to make her children grow up along someone bound to die painfully. (It would be unbearable for her to take in the human as her own, like Jake had been hinting at for years now, if she would just lose him).
Idk what this is, it's like 4 am and I had an idea. Please forgive any typos, I'm too tired to proofread atm.

Terrible Fic Idea #58: Percy Jackson x Criminal Minds
While perusing the PJO tag for the first time in ages, I stumbled across yet another crossover I never would have thought of trying - and which, naturally, hasn't escaped my head. It managed to mash together the worlds of PJO and Criminal Minds... and so, naturally, I thought: if I were going to write this crossover, what would I do?
Just imagine it:
Everything follows canon - until MoA. There Percy plays off the judo throw in New Rome to avoid starting a war with the Greeks, but after they're alone on the Argo Percy tells Annabeth that he doesn't appreciate 1) being blamed for his disappearance, as if Hera had asked him if he wanted to lose his memories and half a year of his life, and 2) being physically attacked by his girlfriend outside of weapons practice.
Naturally, Annabeth doesn't take this well and doubles down on her position, and the two fight like cats and dogs throughout MoA and HoO. By the time they reach Akhlys, Percy is hardly inclined to listen to Annabeth at all, and so doesn't stop poison-bending.
It's not obvious at the time, but not stopping fully unlocks Percy's divine powers. He's now immortal, like Chiron, but not a god. It's also rather the final straw for Annabeth and Percy's relationship.
Because he doesn't immediately realize he's immortal, Percy goes on with normal human things like high school and college - attending both at Camp Jupiter, which is better equipped to handle demigods than the average mortal school. It's only after he starts grad school at nearby Stanford University and gets a lot of comments on how young he looks does anyone start realizing what's happened.
Fast forward to about 15 years after HOO, when Percy has joined the BAU - because even immortals have to pay the bills somehow.
In my head I picture this to be S8/S9 of CM, largely because I enjoyed Alex Blake's character and think she'd be a good outsider POV for the story I want to tell, but dealer's choice.
Percy proves to be the BAU cryptid. His primary and secondary school records say unsub in the making... then he double majors in marine biology and classics in college (because everyone who survives four years in the legion or slays a particular number of monsters gets a classics degree when they graduate by default). Then he goes on to get a doctorate in psychology from Stanford... and swim twice for Team USA in the Olympics. He once went on vacation in the Keys and found the wreck of a lost Spanish galleon free diving. He's polite and mild mannered and goes nowhere without at least three knives on his person and a week's worth of survival gear. When he's tired, his reports sometimes slip into Ancient Greek or Latin. He may be a Hellenist and speaks of Hell as a place that he's been.
Percy is, in short, unfathomable to his profiler colleagues. They like him, but every new thing they learn about him only complicates the profile they're definitely not putting together.
He's been in the BAU for about 18 months before they receive reports of a serial killer's dumping ground in the Oakland Hills, not more than a mile from Camp Jupiter. The victims are all in their late teens and signs indicate all were killed in a ritualistic way. Most of those the investigators can identify are runaways.
Once the BAU is on site, Reid determines that someone is trying to recreate an obscure Ancient Roman sacrifice.
More importantly, Percy realizes that, yes, these are definitely the bodies of Roman demigods - and not one of them was killed by a monster before they could get to camp. In fact, he's pretty sure there's a secret entrance to camp not 100' away from the oldest body.
It's this last point that causes Percy to lead his team to Camp Jupiter. This is a revelation in itself and should answer many of the team's questions about Percy but give them twice as many new ones.
It should also be perfect timing, as they arrive just as praetors Frank and Hazel were thinking of reaching out to Percy, as he's the only real investigator either camp has. They're not aware of most of the murders, as it's not unusual for one or two demigods every year to be killed after leaving the safety of camp, but the last three victims went missing in the last three months under odd circumstances.
(One was a granddaughter of Apollo who'd talked about wanting to join the Hunters of Artemis, and when she disappeared everyone assumed that's what she did, only for the Hunters to visit later claiming she never showed. The most recent was a daughter of Bacchus who hated the regimented life of the legion and wanted to transfer to Camp Half-Blood where things were a little more their speed. Most the others were legacies or the children of minor gods.)
They set up shop in Percy's house - in part because CJ has no police force beyond the legion, which houses their main suspects - in part because Percy's house is built like a Roman temple on the edge of the temple district and no one would dare sneak into it.
(The demigods have been actively treating immortal Percy as a god, because if deification worked for Nero, they can make it work for Percy. And a deified!Percy could only be good for them.)
In the end it comes out a grandchild of Hecate/Trivia was sacrificing other demigods to their ancestor in hopes of obtaining more power - they should be just powerful enough to disguise their actions with the Mist but not much more, and intensely jealous their ancestor handed already-powerful Hazel more power during the Giant War.
Bonuses include: 1) Thalia and the Hunters showing up to help, as do Nico and Will. This should be an intensely confusing family reunion to watch from the outside given that two are immortal. Extra bonus points if the BAU recognize Nico from some wildly successful paranormal investigative channel on YouTube and are shocked to find out all the ghosts are real; 2) Will calling Percy "mom", on account of the fact he's been dating Apollo for the last five years now - Apollo's longest relationship ever - though Percy refuses to consider marriage or children until fifty years have passed; and 3) One of the BAU being tangentially involved with the mythological world already - Hotch had a relationship with a disguised Justice before meeting Hailey and their child is at Camp Jupiter? Reid has just recently met a disguised Athena at a conference and is now worried he'll arrive home to a baby on the doorstep?
And that's all I have. As always, feel free to adopt this bun, just link back to me if you chose to do anything with it.

Tired of Aliens
So, I got tired of doing the alien thing. There are just so many that you can make before you want to nuke them all. Mostly because I hate, hate, hate CAS.
So, I’m back in Sunset Valley, redoing all of them. More CAS. Blecch!
Tumblr media
Anyway, the first one I did lives in this house - renovated by my friend Tedhi as part of her SV renovation series. I did make a few changes - like adding some CC plants outside and inside giving him a music room, since he is in the music career. Plus, he got a nice Fresh Prince car.
Tumblr media
And here he is! Christopher Steel himself! I don’t use sliders - since I hate CAS - but I did change out his skin to a custom one and gave him a new hair and some decent clothes. Usually, when I play him, I put him in the forensic CSI career, but this time, I decided to make him my town’s new orchestra conductor. I kind of based my choice on his bio, that he’s new in town and hoping to have a fresh start. So, in my world he was recruited from Bridgeport by the Crumplebottom sisters to bring a bit of culture to the unwashed masses here in SV.
Tumblr media
This is another Tedhi renovation. I didn’t do a lot to this house, other than get rid of the gym equipment that was included with the lot. I like my sims to use my community lots, so I have a firm rule that if skill objects are available on a community lot, they have to use them and not have one of their own. The only exception I make is for writers and artists. But they still have to be at level 5 or above before I let them have one of their own. Oh! And I do let them all have a bookcase - part of my literacy program.
Tumblr media
And here’s the young lady who lives here. All I did for her was give her a CC skin and hairdo, tone down her make-up, and debulk her muscle size. They’re still toned, but not so in-your-face bulky.
Tumblr media
This is the eccentric doctor who lives in the trailer next door to her. He likes to take his “cat” - it’s supposed to be a skunk - for rides around town. He was recruited by Geoff Landgraab to work at the local hospital as a gene therapist. (He’s not exactly what they were expecting).
Tumblr media
And you all know this house. Since I was in the mood, I decided to redo this lot myself.  BTW, in the background you can see the trailer where my last sim lives. It was another Tedhi reno. I just added some eco-friendly CC to it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Since this is supposed to be the poorest family in town, I pretty much gave them junk one might find while dumpster-diving. The furniture is mismatched and has seen better days. According to the father’s bio, he’s sort of gone downhill since his wife left him. So, when I took him into CAS, I changed one of his traits to “loser.” I also gave him and his two boys that Egyptian hidden trait. Anyway - since I like to give my sims a backstory, I decided that his wife left him after discovering that he got that French sim pregnant. Seems he went out with the guys after work one day, got plastered and had a one-night fling. His wife was not amused. Nor was his oldest, since he overheard his parents’ fight and blames his dad for his mom leaving. The youngest boy is still clueless as to why his mom left, but he’ll probably figure it out, since I aged up that French toddler and she is now his classmate. I love drama!
Anyway, I did take the family into CAS and gave them a dog. I was going to take a picture, but the boys kept disappearing and so I gave up. If I see them around town, I take one then, but again, all I did was give them custom skins and some decent clothes.

Unleash Your Inner Brewer: Crafting a Delicious Mead Recipe
Mead, often referred to as "the nectar of the gods," is one of the oldest alcoholic beverages known to humanity. It's a drink steeped in history and myth, dating back thousands of years. If you've ever wondered about the art of making mead, you're in for a treat. In this article, we'll take you on a journey into the world of mead-making, providing you with a step-by-step guide on how to craft your own delectable mead recipe.
What is Mead?
The Historical Elixir
Mead is an alcoholic beverage made by fermenting honey with water. It's believed to have originated in Africa, Asia, and Europe independently, with records of its consumption dating as far back as 7000 BC. It was cherished by the Vikings, who often referred to it as "honey wine" or "ambrosia."
The Mead-Making Process
Gathering Your Ingredients
Before you embark on your mead-making journey, you'll need to gather the essential ingredients:
1. Honey
Choose high-quality honey, as it will significantly impact the flavor of your mead. The type of honey you select, such as wildflower or clover, will influence the taste.
2. Water
Use clean, chlorine-free water for the best results. Spring water is an excellent choice.
3. Yeast
Yeast is responsible for fermentation. Select a yeast strain that complements the honey's sweetness, such as champagne yeast or ale yeast.
The Steps to Mead-Making
Now that you have your ingredients ready, let's dive into the mead-making process:
1. Sanitization
Begin by thoroughly sanitizing all your equipment. This step is crucial to prevent unwanted bacteria from spoiling your mead.
2. Mixing the Must
The must is the mixture of honey and water. Use the right ratio of honey to water to achieve your desired sweetness level.
3. Pitching the Yeast
Add the selected yeast strain to kickstart fermentation. Yeast consumes the sugars in the honey and converts them into alcohol.
4. Fermentation
Allow the mixture to ferment in a cool, dark place. This process can take anywhere from a few weeks to several months, depending on the recipe and desired flavor profile.
5. Racking
Transfer your mead to another container to separate it from any sediment that may have formed during fermentation.
6. Aging
Let your mead age gracefully in a sealed container. The longer you age it, the smoother and more refined the flavors will become.
Flavor Variations
Adding a Personal Touch
Mead can be customized with various ingredients to create unique flavors:
1. Fruits and Spices
Experiment with fruits like berries or spices such as cinnamon to impart distinctive tastes.
2. Oak Aging
Aging your mead in oak barrels can add complexity and depth to its flavor profile.
Conclusion
Crafting your mead recipe is a rewarding experience that connects you with an ancient tradition. Whether you're making mead for personal enjoyment or to share with friends and family, the art of mead-making is a journey worth embarking on.
FAQs
1. How long does it take to make mead? The time it takes to make mead varies, but on average, it can take anywhere from a few months to a year or more, depending on your recipe and desired flavor.
2. Can I use flavored honey for mead? Absolutely! Flavored honey can add an extra layer of complexity to your mead. Just be sure to choose a flavor that complements your other ingredients.
3. Is mead strong? Mead can vary in alcohol content, but it's typically around 8-20% alcohol by volume (ABV), similar to wine.
4. Can I drink mead immediately after making it? While it's technically drinkable after fermentation, mead benefits from aging, which mellows the flavors and enhances its overall quality.
5. Can I make mead without honey? Honey is the primary ingredient in mead, so it's essential for traditional mead-making. However, there are mead-like beverages that use other sweeteners if you're looking for alternatives.

Family matters
Characters - John Winchester, young Dean, young Sam
Summary - After an unexplainable house fire takes his beloved wife and two young children, a devasted and desperate John Winchester struggles to rebuild his family while confronted with his demons.
Word Count - 3,855
Warnings - Angst, Mental health issues, some violence
A note - An alternative origins story set in the Dark Angel universe, from John Winchester's POV.
John Winchester is a man possessed. Or at least obsessed. He has been talking of demons and bad spirits since an unexplainable house fire took his beloved wife and his two young children. So, possessed might be the right term.
For a time after the tragedy, he was a menace to families with young boys in his neighborhood, because every 4 or 5-year-old could be his oldest in his eyes, and any toddler could be his baby boy. He would try to get them back home with him. For a time, John Winchester was almost more often in police custody for disorderly conduct than at home drinking or reading lore about the supernatural. And "home" for him now was a dingy room above his auto shop, where he used to do the accounting for his business.
After some therapy (the charges never held, but therapy was still mandatory, and the warnings to stay away from local playgrounds and schoolyards were pretty convincing), John learned to stop talking constantly about how demons took his family away. It kept the authorities off his back. He is still convinced that something supernatural was at play with the loss of his family. But he tried to move passed it. He really tried to bury the idea that demons and monsters are real, and of taking revenge on them.
He sold his half of the garage to his business partner and moved to another state to start anew. After some wandering, he ended up in Sleepy Hollow, Wyoming. The name of the town is just too reminiscent of his interests in the occult not to stop there. And it's probably as good a place as any to start being a "normal" widower.
He works as a mechanic in a franchised repair shop and spends most evenings at the end of his days in bars around town. He doesn't want to feel, doesn't want to think. When his coworkers start hinting he might have a drinking problem, he drives to dive bars in surrounding cities instead. He's also thinking of quitting the repair shop: too many people there talking about their family bliss. Or about him.
It's another lonely night where he sits at the counter of a half-decent water hole on the fringe of Gillette when he overhears a drunk tell that he lost his job at a nearby government facility. He apparently poked around a project called Manticore where he shouldn't have.
Manticore. As in the legendary man-eating monster? Surely, it is a little too on the nose. All patrons in the bar seem to think that it is just customary drunken babble. On the other hand, governments aren't often subtle and not everybody read about every imaginable monster there is. John immediately forgets he is trying to live a supernatural-free life. His grief latches again on revenge and, suddenly, his upside-down world is almost put right side up.
He digs around and finds that the guy worked at a big private facility doing secretive government (or federal agency, locals are not sure) contracts. Nobody knows a lot, but even if most buildings in the compound are fairly new, one of them is rumored to be haunted, with stories of monsters in the basement to boot.
It looks as if this place might be a good training ground to find monsters (or demons) and learn how to beat the crap out of them. Or possibly interrogate them. His mind is not convinced that Mary and the kids are dead; they might just be captives of the spiritual world, somewhere, and demons are surely responsible for that.
The guy that got sacked was doing equipment maintenance there. As a mechanic, he probably has the basic qualifications to do that, and the job is probably open…
He already did some manipulation to clean his permanent record of the misdemeanors his gravitating around playgrounds had peppered in there (it turns out that a lot of employers are finicky about criminal records), so he applies right away. They're mostly looking for loners that are skilled, disciplined, don't ask too many questions, and keep their mouths shut. John thinks he will feel right at home there and he can channel all his drive into solving this (maybe) supernatural problem by slaying the beast, be it metaphorically or literally.
It's not gratifying work, but the stern hierarchy of the company that kind of runs like a branch of the military is surprisingly soothing to him. It is a structure he knows well from his years in the Marines. And he is alone from his department on the evening shift, which is fine by him, having fewer people trying to make friends with him. He's mostly just waiting for a piece of equipment to break down. So, he has a lot of time on his hands to explore discreetly for a couple of months.
Now John is a man with a mission. He feels alive again, having a purpose. During his boring non-bothered shifts, he walks around the fenced-in compound (a pack of cigarettes in hand in case someone asks why he's there), noting how many people and cameras secure the place. In his down time, he's mostly in his apartment, meticulously studying floor plans for every building in the compound.
He figures out the best place where they would keep some foul creatures. (Because that company is shady as hell; he would not put it past them to keep monsters handy, or to conjure dark spirits to obtain favors.) It is the most guarded building in the whole place. It could be something else, (there are so many secrets here) but he'll try anyway. He has nothing to lose, and revenge fills his stomach with a warm feeling that cheap whiskey can't beat.
When he finally tests his planning skills on site, he is pleased with the results. He estimated quite accurately how many guards are on patrol and their usual schedule in and out of the building. His heart rate is under control, he avoids all cameras without breaking a sweat. He planned multiple entry and escape routes, focusing on the optimal ones the same way he did when he was in service. His terrain skills are not too rusty, even if it's been quite a while since he used them.
Figuring out how to unlock the door to the basement was the thing that he worked on for months beforehand and he was the most nervous about. But he didn't trigger any alarm doing it. When he sneaks into the poorly lit basement, he does indeed hear some growling and howling creatures from behind faraway closed doors, very similar to what the rumors were reporting. In addition to his small crowbar and his wire cutters, he came with silver bullets in his gun, a brazing blow torch, and some salt for good measure. He is prepared to face anything. Or so he thinks.
Because what he hears, clear as a fine tune radio, just around the corner from where he stands, is the muted struggles of a small body against a bigger one, and the rapid irregular tapping of arms and legs against the cement floor. Popping his head at the intersection of the gray hallway, John sees two guards. They barely restrain a child (buzz cut, a bit stocky in his pajama-like uniform) who is fighting tooth and nail to reach a smaller boy (slightly longer hair and slender frame, but same type of clothes) on the floor. The latter is the one making the tapping sounds (jerky movements of booted legs, eyes closed, head tilted back); he is having some kind of epileptic episode.
-492, stand down! What are you even doing down here? Go back to your unit immediately. That's an order! At that, the buzz-cut kid loses some of his steam. Apparently, he is trained to obey orders, even if he is probably not up to the dress code since he doesn't have any shoes or boots on.
The second guard looks behind his shoulder at the small boy whose body has stopped spasming. Buzz cut makes a strangled sound looking at him, but the guard seems nonchalant about the whole ordeal. - I think he's a goner. Might as well save us the trouble and bring him directly to the morgue. - No! Sev? SEV!!! The older kid's voice is pained and panicked. All his combativity comes back in an instant.
This is all a little too much for John watching the scene from afar. His stomach is in a knot and he is losing his grip on reality. From a distance, the name shouted by the boy sounds too much like 'Sam', and his mind superimposes images of his sons on the two boys before his eyes. He doesn't think, his gut instinct taking over: his feet are already moving towards the lot of them, his mouth silently making a "Sammy" shape.
Everything happens at once.
In a blur, the older boy attacks, striking the guard in front of him with two swift motions to run to his friend (or sibling?) on the floor. He throws himself on the ground to hoist the little one into a half-sitting, half-kneeling position. He's howling now, like a wounded animal, and the creatures hidden behind some of the doors howl with him. The shout of pain cannot escape the man's throat, his leg at a weird angle after the boy targeted his knee, but his windpipes crushed while he was still crumpling down (almost in slow motion).
And in the same moment, John Winchester is charging, gun aimed at the still standing man in the hallway, the one reaching for his nightstick. The silver bullet hit a chunky piece of thigh, and a scream of agony comes from the second guard who collapses to the ground, near the first one. John swoops in and throws some salt into the men's faces, just in case. (This clearly put them in pain, both of them, but he's not sure if it is because they are demons or because they now have a bunch of salt in their eyes.) He kicks the nearest man in the head to make sure he stays down, checking they don't have guns of their own (just the nightsticks), grabs the two boys managing to keep his gun at the ready, and starts retreating swiftly backward to keep the threat in sight.
He turns a corner into a new corridor even darker than the one they just left, the boys still crushed to his chest, and for a moment John is completely disoriented. With an uncooperative eight-year-old that could take down a grown man without too much of a fuss with his bare hands and feet, his exit could have been excruciatingly difficult, if not downright impossible. That is if even he could remember where to go next.
For now, he is just trying to silently coax buzz cut boy to get with the program and stop fighting him. He roughly grabs the collar of the weird pajamas top to stare closely into the huge eyes to convey his intent. The other kid, just dead weight on his shoulder, is hindering his movements (but he doesn't want to think about it, about the possibility that the little boy is dead).
From this close, he can't miss the stubborn wrinkle forming between the boy's eyebrows and the tension in his shoulders: the young'un is about to throw a punch. John has a split second to decide if he wants to strike first or find another way to defuse the situation. But then the smaller child whimpers and the little fury immediately calm himself. Sev (or is it Sam?) is definitively not dead. John feels his shoulders relax. Looking at each other, the half-pint soldier and the full-grown Marine both realize that their little protege will be alright, that they all going to be alright if they can just get out of this place.
He can feel the tension lift from the stocky boy. After a beat, still nose to nose with him in the dark basement, the kid gives one sharp nod and slowly wiggles out of John's arms. It's obvious he thinks he and his buddy are relatively safe for now. He gives Sev's still limp and sweaty body a little reassurance pat and goes seamlessly into full reconnaissance mode. It is quite impressive. Totally focus, totally silent, using military signs to indicate to John the way to go and the moves to make.
This is not a situation John Winchester ever thought he would find himself in: following a kid's silent orders. He cannot say he is a big fan of that, but he knows it’s the best scenario for now.
When they are finally out of the building, John takes back the lead. The lad's bare feet are quite silent when they have to walk momentarily down a gravel path to reach his optimized escape route. He shushes the little one in his arms that is regaining some awareness of the world around him. They almost reached the parking lot where his big black car is waiting for him on the other side of the eight-foot-high chain-link fence when the alarm starts blaring.
Again, so fast John cannot really see him do it, the kid reaches the top of the fence, hangs himself upside down by his knees, extending his arms and wriggling his fingers to indicate John should transfer the younger boy to him while he climbs. The transfer is awkward. He is reluctant to let go of his charge whose features bring back memories of his own son. His lack of focus almost gets him kicked in the face by a boot when Sam (Sev) tries to help in the change of hands. But the siren is now coupled with gunshot sounds and all John's instincts kick back in, telling him they have to be on the move. Telling him to stay in the present.
Long distance shots start to ricochet around them as they jump off the fence. Sev is supported by the other boy who looks at John to know where to go now. He points to his car while fishing for his key, and they manage to get into the car without too much damage.
He doesn't go back to his apartment. He drives two towns over before stopping at a motel. Tells a groggy Sev and his hyperalert friend to stay in the car until further notice. It is only when the desk clerk gives him a suspicious look along with the room key that he realizes he's bleeding.
Back at the car, he opens the trunk to get the first aid kit and his duffle before passing them on to his new sidekick; that gives him the freedom to carry the little one with ease for the first time. Without meaning to (not really), he presses his cheek to the boy's head.
In the motel room, he sets Sev on the bed nearest the entryway. He locks the door, closes the drapes, and directs the light of a desk lamp on the prone kid. He starts a superficial inspection, making sure that no stray bullet buried itself in the young flesh. Buzz cut stands near the bed, alert and ready to open the first aid kit at the first sign of injuries. John must admit that he is impressed by the older kid's attitude and demeanor during the whole ordeal, starting when he took point to get out of the Manticore basement.
Now that the adrenaline is starting to wear off, John is asking himself the important questions he has been ignoring until that moment. Like, what were those two kids doing in that building, surrounded by soldier-like guards in a hallway full of reinforced doors like prison cells? Why both of them are wearing pajamas-like uniforms?
Still thinking, he's gently palping every limb, brushing his thumb under the little fringe of hair on Sev's forehead, turning his head to examine his neck and behind his ears. For a moment, he is reminded of that time Sammy had an ear infection and he was the only one able to get him to sleep, all cuddled in his arms. He is still looking at the child, but images of his son are merging with what his visual sense provides.
Until he sees it. A tattoo on the back of the kid's neck: a bar code with a number. He saw something similar on the older boy, too. It makes him see them more as Holocaust survivors than it does his children, now. Even if Sev looks an awful lot like Sammy would at this age. So, he gets back to the task at hand. Other than the exhaustion that came with the seizure, there is nothing wrong with the boy.
John sits on the other bed, a little more relaxed even if his side is starting to hurt like hell. He signals the other one: "Your turn."
When he sees the kid fidgeting with the first aid kit still in his hands, he adds: "Don't worry, he's ok. I'll get him some orange juice or some other sugary drink soon to boost his energy a bit. - He needs tryptophan or milk. Or both. - Tryptophan? - I heard a nurse call it that. "
John hums as if he understands, tugging the boy's hand to make him stand in front of him, between the two beds. When he feels reluctance, he looks sharply into the green eyes. The message is clear and the little soldier now stands at attention, letting himself be examined thoroughly.
There are some fresh cuts and scrapes on his body, nothing too serious, and some older scars including a burn mark on his calf. A bad one. He brusquely put the bottom of the kid's pajamas back down on his leg, reaching to examine the first boy again, weary he missed a burn on this one. Of course, he didn't. His mind is just playing tricks on him.
He tells himself he's just being thorough, but in reality, he can't help but reach out to Sam. A firm but gentle squeeze on a shoulder, a pat on a cheek, as if his skin remembers being a father. He would ruffle his hair if it were long enough to do so. The boy is awake now, if weak looking. John smiles at him before gesturing to the first aid kit. When Buzz cut gives it to him, he goes to the bathroom to quickly clean his wound. He presses some gauze onto his side, fixing it in place with tape. He removes the paper covering the glass on the counter and fills it with water. He can see through the half-open door that the older boy is sitting next to Sev and talking softly to him. For the first time, he looks at ease, even though he regularly glances furtively towards the bathroom.
He goes back into the room to give the water to Sev. He focuses on what the older boy said earlier and, looking from one kid to the other, asks: "Tell me about tryptophan." When there is no response from either of them, the little one looking a bit confused and out of it, he turns towards the half-pint soldier: "Now, son." The kid is back at attention between the beds
- It's … It's some kind of pill that helps with the shakes. It didn't help that much today because he already got the shakes yesterday and Sev couldn't rest today; he went for special training at PsyOps. He's always drained when he comes back from PsyOps.
He caught himself and the boy off guard calling him 'son'. But the voice is foreign to him and the kid looks nothing like his eldest did the last time he'd seen him. Those green eyes have nothing in common with the hazel he remembers all members of his family to have.
The kid's eyes shift to the bed, seeking reassurance from the other boy even if the little one is back asleep. It is a profound bond that those boys share. Like family. - Is Sa… Is Sev your brother? - He's part of my unit, sir.
Unit. So… Child soldiers, without a doubt now. And more than the two of them, apparently. He supposes this is as close as a family as they get. - What's your name? - 492, sir.
John blinks. Even the military does not use service numbers to refer to soldiers. The older boy seems to take his incredulity as a response to some kind of insubordination, so he hastily stands straighter and quickly recites: - My designation is X5-331845739492, sir. - How come he's Sev and you're… 492? - He's X5-331845741027. - You don't have names? Sev stands for… Seven?
492 almost shrugs: "I… I have a bad habit of shortening words, sir. And since Sev is younger than all of us, it felt right to use a smaller designation."
He rubs his face with his hand while pacing the space between the front door and the bathroom, trying to make sense of it all. Bar-codes, like properties, and no names. A mix between livestock and weapons if his assessment is correct.
Sam whines softly in his sleep and man and boy alike get closer to the bed to make sure he is alright. That doesn't sound like any weapon he has ever seen before. He should get to a drugstore and a mini-mart to buy some anti-seizure medicine, juice boxes, and milk for the kids. Also, clothes. They will stand out like sore thumbs walking about in those weird uniforms and with no shoes. He stops his train of thoughts at that: Is he really considering keeping these children? He cannot take them back, of course. That is not a life for kids.
But John Winchester's life is a mess, too. Can he take care of two kids while going after monsters or demons (or whatever took his own family)? He has a horrible thought: What if all the creatures howling in that basement were children instead of monsters?
He looks back at the boys as a way of grounding himself. 492 is back to sitting next to Sam (the little one is definitively Sam for him, now, since he looks so much like his lost son and he doesn't have a name of his own), rubbing his fingers on the sleeve of the younger boy in a soothing gesture, looking intently as if he could will the tremors not to come back to shake the small frame of his friend. Of his brother. Of John's son.
This time, the use of the word doesn't feel foreign to him. With a nod of his head, John makes up his mind. Fishing his car keys from his pocket to get to a store that is open all night, he puts his other hand on the doorknob and turns towards 492:
- I'm gonna call you Dean.

Petrichor Chapter 47: Renaissance
Chapter 47: Renaissance
(-~-)
Note: Hey, everyone! I hope you enjoy the chapter! I’m curious to see what you think…
Not my forgetful ass not realizing that it was Wednesday! So this is going up at 4:50 in the morning on Thursday. Sorry everyone! The chapter was done on Monday, but I just didn't realize what day of the week it was.
Within five minutes time, the small striped trolly rounded the corner, pulling to a stop in front of the duo. They boarded and thanked the driver with a set of silent nods, making their way towards the back where they could potentially find more privacy in the form of fewer eyes upon them. There had been a few glances as they’d boarded, but not a single word spoken between any of them. Still, it was their prerogative to maintain as much privacy as possible.
The trolley didn’t require payment, a perk of the local area that neither of them had considered before deciding to take this little trip. Sirrus was already privy to this fact despite not bringing it up at any point. But it wasn’t something he was concerned with edgewise. One way or another they would have reached their destination.
They settled into their seats just as the vehicle started to pull away from the curb and back onto the road. And within a minute the trolly had reached the main road, turning and beginning its slightly steep descent down towards its intended destination.
Looking out of the window as they headed down towards the shoreline, V leaned his head against the cool glass, settling in for the rest of the ride. He was as comfortable as he could possibly be considering that he was riding on public transportation. Sirrus glanced over at him as they both sat there quietly, still amused by his companion’s silent excitement. He had calmed down a bit now, and neither of them were currently dying of laughter any longer, but he could still feel the optimism pouring off of him in waves. And that brought a soft, slight smile to his face.
He was glad they were doing this.
(-~-)
The light that filtered through the trees above them was ever so lightly warm, the breeze cool. There were barely any leaves left now, most of them fallen to the ground, now having settled wherever they possibly could. The grass was damp and dry moisture hung in the air, the low humidity just enough to hold it there.
The little ones had wanted to go to the park. They didn’t care about the rain. In fact, as far as they were concerned, it was a bonus. Plenty of puddles to splash in and large piles of wet leaves to dive into.
They had been enjoying their time in the neighborhood for the last few days. It had been a welcome change of pace after departing from the Ludwig Estate once things had calmed down. And as Kyle, Carlo, and Julio all ran and bumbled about, climbing all over every available surface of the playground equipment, Kyrie sat on a nearby bench, simply enjoying the fresh air and the sound of chirping birds, the crisp air on her skin. This was nice. No responsibilities or commitments for once. Just genuine, quality family time. She wished that it could always be like this.
Just then, Nero came to a stop in front of her, half jogging as he was chased away from the play equipment by the two oldest additions to their little adopted family. The two boys then grabbed their little brother and ran back towards the slide, their conversation overlapping as they yelled back and forth at one another about… something. Who was to say? Did anyone ever truly know what children were talking about to one another? It was doubtful that even they knew, and they were the ones speaking to one another.
“Hey, Kyrie. That book any good?” He asked, flopping down next to her on the bench. It was one of those metal park benches designed to torment you via the medium of hundreds of tiny little holes that made sure you couldn’t sit on it comfortably at all.
She glanced up from the book in question, putting a piece of paper in it to mark the page before putting it back into her shoulder bag. She then turned to Nero, her full attention on him as she smiled, giggling at his playfully silly demeanor as he pretended to not look at her, feining an aloof personality.
“Oh, yes! It was, but I think I’ll put it away. I don’t want the moisture in the air to ruin the pages.”
“What’s it about?” He inquired, not having caught anything other than a glimpse at the cover. She’d been skimming through it for the last few days when she had a few quiet minutes to herself. It had to be pretty interesting, if only by virtue of the fact that she kept going back to it. Or perhaps she was just morbidly curious? She looked as though she were unsure as to how to answer that question the longer she considered it.
“I… can’t really describe it just yet. I don’t think I’ve read enough of it to understand. It’s very interesting, though. Once I’ve finished a few more chapters I think I’ll be able to explain it a bit better.” She blushed slightly, shrugging. It was the truth. She just wished that she did have more she could say. It wasn’t much of an answer, as far as she was concerned.
Nero nodded in both consideration and confirmation. He’d read books like that before. Books with a great feel to them that you couldn’t really describe; something nearly impossible to put into words than to say that it was good and a worthwhile usage of your spare time. But as far as he was concerned, if she liked it, then it was a good book. “Sounds good to me.”
The two of them sat there next to one another, watching the children play and enjoying the atmosphere they currently occupied. And as Nero glanced between the little ones and the love of his life, he caught the slightest glimpse of something in her face that he couldn’t place, but he noticed it nonetheless.
“Something on your mind? You look kinda worried.” Nero couldn’t help but say something. It mattered to him what she thought and how she felt. He couldn’t always do something about it, but he always wanted her to know that he cared, not that he ever doubted that she knew that.
“Not worried…” She trailed off, her mind distant and her eyes staring off at something so far in the distance that it might have only been there in her mind. Her demeanor didn’t seem troubled in the sense that she was worried or upset, but she did seem ever so slightly tense, almost as though she was considering something strongly. He hoped that if she was, she would tell him. Nero wasn’t even sure he could ever be upset with Kyrie. “It’s just something that’s been on my mind for the last day or so. I don’t want to trouble you.”
“You could never bother me, Kyrie. You can tell me anything. What’s on your mind?”
“I… I like it here. On the mainland, I mean. It’s so different from Fortuna. But maybe that’s a good thing.” She seemed at a loss as to how to explain what she was thinking and feeling, so she just spoke, trying her best to communicate it. “I know I must sound crazy, and you probably think I’m running a fever or that I’ve been out in the cold for too long, but… “
Nero stared at her, his eyes slightly wider than they had been previously and a quiet look of absolute disbelief on his face. He got the impression that he knew where she was going with this, but he needed to actually hear those words come out of her mouth. They’d both grown up in Fortuna. Their whole lives had been there up until the last handful of years. To even suggest that; to even consider that… Could she really be thinking…
“Could you ever see us here? That we could start over someplace else? Somewhere like this?” She spread out her arms, gesturing towards everything around them, indicating nothing in particular, but he understood either way. Her intentions were very clear, and she wore her heart on her sleeve.
I just… maybe there are parts of our lives that we would be happier without? Maybe things that we can’t forget but we can leave behind? They will always be with us because they are a part of who we are now, but maybe…” She became quiet for a moment, looking down at the ground as she trembled just a bit, her voice still as soft as ever but carrying a conviction Nero had heard before, but never quite like this. “Maybe the people that we love who we’ve lost would want us to be happy.”
Nero instantly understood now. He couldn’t help but understand. A part of his heart clenched at the very thought. Yes. He knew exactly what and who she was talking about. And that was significant. Kyrie liked nothing less than talking about what had happened to her brother. He was still glad that she hadn’t had to see that. It still tore him apart that he hadn’t been able to do more; to do something at all. He knew that she thought about it. She tried to hide it, but he knew it had wounded her deeply to lose him, especially after what had happened to their parents. Credo had been her hero. Her protector. Her savior.
And now he was just… gone.
He would never meet Kyle, Calro, and Julio. They would never spend time together again. She would never speak to him and squeeze him tightly as she threw her arms around him in a tight, loving embrace again. There wasn’t even a body in his grave. Dante had told him that he’d just turned into golden dust and drifted away, his sacrifice perhaps granting him the peace he’d more than earned after everything he’d given to protect them. He’d forsake himself, his faith, and even his very soul, but even with that ambition there was a line he wouldn’t cross. There were people he loved too much to throw away because the world wasn’t worth saving without them. No matter how hard of a time he gave Nero, he’d loved him. He’d died for him. And his final wish had been to save them, a task he’d entrusted to Dante in much the same way that protecting his sister and Nero had once been passed to him by his parents when they’d been killed in a demon attack. And a torch that Nero had taken up without being asked or any hint of hesitation.
Nero would always protect and cherish her. And he would go wherever she needed him to go. Not because he owed her, but because it was just who he was. She was his everything. And she could be his everything anywhere.
“I’ll go anywhere you go, Kyrie. I think I understand what you mean.” Nero said, giving her a sincere and understanding look. He felt a similar pain in his heart. He could never truly understand how she felt since they both processed their grief differently and she had known Credo longer, but he did understand her desire to start anew. She was right. They couldn’t forget their past, and a part of him would never even think to try and do so, but they could bring it with them somewhere new. The good and the bad. It would always be a part of them, but they didn’t have to linger in its sorrowful shadow forever.
“Do… you really mean that, Nero.” She looked both shocked and touched. She wasn’t quite tearing up, but her tone of voice betrayed the flood of emotion that she was barely holding back.
He placed his hand on her shoulder gently, looking her in the eyes as he pulled her into a gentle hug. The sky was starting to darken a bit and the wind had grown colder and stronger. A storm was clearly rolling in. “Of course I do, Kyrie. Let’s get out of here before it storms. The sky is getting pretty dark. I think we have a lot to talk about.”
(-~-)
Kyrie deserves to be bold and brave and to express what she wants to do for once, I think. Maybe shooting that demon helped her realize that! I’m curious to see what you all think! Let me know in the comments, and I’ll see you next Friday! Also, I have something fun planned for the next chapter. I just wanted to check back in with Nero first. I just realized that It’s been FOREVER… I wonder what everyone else is up to. Thanks for your answers to the aquarium question! They were fun hehe! Take care and I’ll see you soon! And thanks as always for reading! Sorry for any mistakes. My editing brain isn’t working! I’ll try to catch them, but if you see anything big, please let me know! Bye bye!

I've looked through the entire wiki, and am still not sure so I'm asking you. Do you think thane and drell in general need implants and amps for their biotic powers to work? On one hand only the asari are specifically mentioned to to not need them and there are a bunch of biotic amp upgrades in me2 that boost Thane and others. On the other in Me1 Liara is equipable with different amps even though she definitely doesn't have an implant so maybe game mechanics shouldn't really be considered and the drell did get their planet ruined from over mining maybe there planet has natual ezzo like the asaris.
What do you think? I always thought the implants were kinda silly as an idea for any species especially if the atari don't need them.
Ooh! Yeah! You're right Bioware totally contradicted themselves a bunch here.
I haven't dived into biotic lore that much but I do think you identified a really confusing bit there which is that Asari not needing implants does make it feel silly for other species to have it.
I guess the way that I would reconcile this personally is to assume that any person capable of biotics (no matter the species) will probably have some baseline ability to engage with them-- but with drawbacks. Maybe it's that using them sans amp makes your nose bleed, maybe it causes debilitating migraines or even risks neural injury. It's likely amps "focus" or "enhance" the ability that is already there, which seems supported by the wiki given how I think its mentioned that there are power differences between L2s and L3s.
This would give a reason for species to still use amps-- safety and stability.
Then there's the Asari... Probably what bioware was getting at is that their species in particular has been around for so long and is so deeply intertwined with biotics for survival that they have evolved past having their body "reject" biotic power use. They may still be able to use amps, in order to enhance their power and ability, like how the Eclipse sisters sell biotic enhancing drugs in Samara's recruitment mission. But it's not a need for their own safety as it is compared to younger species who are still "new" to the ability. Their species hasn't yet fully "evolved" to integrate biotics seamlessly into their biology.
As for the Drell. I don't think they're necessarily a much younger species, but by eyeballing the ME timeline and thinking about how long it takes for industrialization to start messing with the environment (not long) I feel like I can comfortably assume that they're not the OLDEST species. I do, however, think they are old enough to have been somewhat influenced by the Protheans, especially with their perfect memory and sensory ability... At least in ancient form. (That's headcanon though hehe)
All this is to say they're probably young enough in relation to Asari (especially considering the timeline of Turian evolution) that they do require amps. However, if you want to hc that there's a heavy eezo presence on Rakhana, that could definitely give reasoning as to why they wouldn't need it.
Personally, at least in Thane's case, I feel like he wouldn't use anything advanced (at least anything that wasn't just for stabilization or safety). He puts a real emphasis on the damage his body is capable of enacting, sans external weapons or enhancements. Like preferring to kill with your hands instead of a gun, I could see him taking the same approach to biotics and getting burned for it (overworking his present implant). :( I'd wonder if it would affect his memories or thinking at all.

Here's some more original Mixel tribes. This time in a hypothetical series 11.
First we have the Scubroz, a scuba diving themed tribe who lives at the Mixopolos harbor. They double as fishermen as well.
Tumblr media
Center: Dyvor is the fearless leader of the Scubroz. With his trusty trident, he claims to have fought some incredible sea monsters... but are these claims actually true?
Left: Marino is a heavily armored mixel equipped for diving into the deepest depths of the ocean... however they're still very afraid of the dark.
Right: Phinn is a wild and voracious swimmer with an appetite for seafood. Live fish in particular happen to be his favorite, so he often eats some of the catch he's supposed to be hauling back to the harbor.
Next we have the Medix Cousins. An expansion to the Medix tribe from series 8, but I attempted to cover different types of medical staff and equipment this time.
Tumblr media

This introductory guide will provide you with essential tips and insights to help you get started in steep skiing.
Tumblr media
Understanding Steep Skiing
Steep skiing, as the name suggests, involves skiing down slopes that are significantly steeper than what you might find on a typical groomed trail. These slopes often have angles exceeding 30 degrees and can reach up to 60 degrees or more. Steep skiing requires not only advanced skiing skills but also a strong understanding of mountain safety and avalanche awareness.
Essential Skills and Techniques
To safely enjoy steep skiing, you must develop several key skills:
Edge Control: Precise edge control is crucial when navigating steep slopes. Practice keeping your skis on edge to maintain control and prevent slipping.
Jump Turns: On extremely steep terrain, jump turns are often necessary to manage speed and direction. This technique involves quickly hopping your skis into a new direction.
Body Position: Maintain a balanced, forward-leaning stance to stay centered over your skis. This helps in managing your weight and maintaining stability.
Avalanche Awareness: Steep slopes are often prone to avalanches. Understanding how to read avalanche forecasts, recognizing warning signs, and carrying proper safety equipment is essential.
Equipment for Steep Skiing
Having the right equipment can make a significant difference in your steep skiing experience. Here are some recommendations:
Skis: Choose skis that are designed for steep and technical terrain. These skis typically have a stiffer flex and a narrower waist for better edge control.
Boots: Stiff, high-performance ski boots provide the support needed for steep skiing.
Bindings: Ensure your bindings are set correctly for your weight and skill level to prevent accidental releases.
Safety Gear: Always carry avalanche safety equipment, including a beacon, probe, and shovel. Additionally, wearing a helmet is highly recommended.
Preparing for Steep Skiing
Before heading out, it’s important to prepare thoroughly:
Training: Take a steep skiing course or hire a guide to learn the basics and build confidence.
Fitness: Steep skiing requires strong legs and core muscles. Engage in a fitness routine that includes strength training, endurance, and flexibility exercises.
