🍓 ⇢ how did you get into writing fanfiction?

a high school classmate introduced me to tumblr and fandom as a concept (i was on fandom facebook accidentally answering all the quizzes, but didn't know that people like. talked to each other ???). and then she showed me her fanfiction.net account, specifically so i could read her angst titanic fic, which made me go ":000 i could do that omg" and i haven't looked back

🕯️ ⇢ on a scale from 1 to 10, how much do you enjoy editing? why is that?

10 !!!!!!! love love love editing it's so fun !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i love formatting, i love saying little sentences out loud to see how they sound, i love seeing the finished product after i've polished it lovingly... i love worldbuilding editing more than i love writing, in some aspects ? which in turn is why i love to beta and translate fics so much

hello i saw you talking a bit in the tags of the cane post you reblogged from me hehe, you mentioned you might make a longer post about the use of canes for balance, figured id send an ask so if u wanted u could put that in the answer. im really interested to learn more about it — im currently writing a character who uses a cane for balance reasons and i might have to use one someday since i live somewhere that gets gotdamn icy in the winter, so im interested to hear how best practices differ from using a cane for injury/pain

hi ! very happy to infodump about (my) cane usage, after this post. i'm adding this one which has incredible advice on tons of mobility aids. prefacing this with "ymmv, varied sources help because everyone does different things", as usual ^^

cane usage can be about distance or span of time you need to walk / stand up. this depends on why you need the cane and if certain situations trigger it more

for me, walking is better than standing up still, because i'm not weighing down on any body part long enough to cause pain. leaning on the cane hurts even if i switch hands regularly. crutches (especially forearm crutches) are more efficient, but not indefinitely

for long visits and similarly tiring activities (lots of still time + starting / stopping movement), a wheelchair is way more useful. otherwise the heterogeneity of the movement will hurt in itself

canes are a huge help with footing if the terrain slopes, gets uneven or is a little unpredictable. however if the terrain is muddy, extremely crumbly / cracked, or slippery, you may need tip attachments to make the grip better

you need more space to move around, and have to be careful not to knock into people / objects when you move and turn, but poor spatial awareness or muscle control will mean you still bump into things frequently

i lean on everything if i'm inside and don't have my cane ready, if i need something stable which doesn't depend on my ability to hold it, or if my legs / arms are giving out

the rubber tip reduces the aftershock of the stick slamming into the ground, especially if you have trouble measuring your strength. else, the tapping will genuinely hurt your arm + shoulder and also everyone in a five mile radius will hear you walking around

the handle needs to fit your hand (larger hand = larger handle etc). there's slide-on handles to help reduce the strain if closing your hand tight hurts. ataxia / tremors can make you drop your cane or clutch it even tighter and needs to be accounted for (softer grip, wrist strap)

any new mobility device is gonna hurt in the beginning as your nerves get used to constant pressure in a new shape. this was worse for my crutch than for my cane, possibly because the crutch came first. wheelchairs hurt in unexpected ways but i have less experience

when you stop using the cane, your hand can hurt from the sudden change in pressure on your nerve, and the rest of your body too as the limbs readjust. if you have paresthesia (clinical "pins and needles" basically), holding the cane can make it worse. i don't know how orthotics would interact with that

misc

foldable canes are very good because they can fit in your bag, instead of falling over or stabbing you in the chest when the vehicle suddenly stops. it also means you don't forget them if you have to leave quick and you're distracted

using a cane slows you down... usually. the energy of a character will still affect their speed. i have always walked like a maniac which means i clack-clack my way along, out of breath + tired at the end. i can't run anymore though, so catching up with / escaping someone ranges from difficult to impossible

hidden features of the cane would work best if they don't impede its use (no additional weight, no need to take it apart / off the ground): storage of data, small items like needles, something that incorporates the tapping of the cane or its material...

stairs are difficult. how i do it is put cane two steps above me, and repeat every time i reach that step (less arm movements, easier on my shoulder). i have read vastly different methods, so my takeaway is everyone has their rhythm and the amount of training to find what works / focus implementing it will vary. brain fog, emotional deregulation and physical pain set you back

i am currently reading the novelisation and let me tell you. i cannot wait to pick it back up because it's INSANE how much fun the author is having with their L characterisation ??? + the batshit Mello Narration™ straight from nisioisin's novel. genius storytelling, this crêpe cart is going 5000 km an hour and there are no brakes. the french translation includes such gems as:

— Bonjour, jeune homme, que diriez-vous d'une petite crêpe ? fit l'ours d'un ton aussi léger qu'à contretemps. ("Hello, young man, would you like to enjoy a little crêpe ?" said the bear in a tone as light as it was against tempo.) i think Akaashi would leave Kenma little treats for his streams that become real show-stealers for his fans, and they start awaiting them eagerly. but the downside is they also reflect Akaashi's moods of the day. feeling happy ? he cooked Kenma's favourite food (he is a mid-tier cook but the effort is there). was work horrible ? he's left a book on how to fake your death. handwritten annotations on how to do it better

comments that point out something specific. an emotion, a line, where they were / what time it was... always makes me go "woah. someone is reading it. 30 people in my house rn"

many such cases !!!! but i'll be good and only mention Les Mondes d'Ewilan (link in french bc this is Not available in other languages... Pierre Bottero has barely been translated at all !!!!! his english wiki page is very charming if a little empty)

this trilogy has it all: part of a wider universe, rich lore and worldbuilding, very creative (main girl's power is literally imagination. i cannot make this up), obviously written for children but with clear poetic intent... these are the first books that made me pause and read back sentences, see how they worked, why i loved them so much. piecing out the backstories, what happens with the secondary cast, where the plot is going, it was all so incredible and nurturing at a time where i was very lonely. to this day i'm very inspired by the universe of Gwendalavir and Bottero's writing in general !!

i've met him once, before he passed away in 2009, and he was incredible with kids. here and here are some interviews he did. the second one has his thoughts on being catalogued as writing "for kids", and if he minds that when he's also read by adults, and i really appreciate his take on it ("not at all. i write whatever i like, and i'm lucky my audience is only getting wider. i don't care about those kinds of labels")

i've thought a lot about it and i'm not actually sure i have unpopular opinions ? <- person who's in an echo chamber and can be easily persuaded that two contradicting opinions on a character are both true depending on context and the alignment of the stars

🔪 ⇢ what's the weirdest topic you researched for a writing project

weirdest due to how unconsequential and pointless it is: the exact bus lines my characters would take and if the bus was running at that time + would stop where i wanted it to (it made me change the entire plot of the fic to find out that no, it didn't)

weirdest due to what it was exactly: various laws on japanese fiscal fraud and how it's prosecuted. will this fanfic be written ? no :)

TT is a former Wammy kid, to go with my headcanon that after L and Watari died, Roger kinda... dropped it ? he managed the orphanage for a couple years till all the kids aged out, but didn't emphasise detective training anymore and like Linda redirecting in art, TT was left to do completely different things

all this to say that TT was already pretty old when she arrived at Wammy's house (almost 9) so she didn't spend that long in it and remembers the outside rather well. she's from the south of France, raised by a single mother, and the change is quite harsh on her little worried brain. her heavy accent makes it hard to communicate and she doesn't really enjoy the food they have in England, much more bland than what she's used to

she finds Mello's manuscript detailing BB's wonderful escapades one day, browsing the library, and does her own research... not the best childhood hero but he's her little book character she wants to cosplay as !! unsure if she fully believes Beyond Birthday genuinely did all that, considering Mello's dramatisation. that must make for interesting discourse with the other BB fans haha

hi !! thank you for sending this ask, though i don't think i've been here that long haha. i first read death note in 2013 i'd say, but i only joined the fandom around 2016. there's people who have been here almost a decade longer (which is so cool to me !!)

since i've joined the fandom i don't think the main ships have changed a lot, even though some did wax and wane in popularity (i know mello/matt used to be more popular than it is now, though it is still a major ship). Misa definitely gets better treatment than she used to, from what i heard ! but the sexism is kinda baked into the source material thanks to Ohba just being Like That™, and considering how fandom can treat female love interests... i'm sadly not surprised she got so much shit, and i'm glad i don't see any now. possibly only because i curate my dash well ? though i don't hope so

mainly, as we stay in the fandom over the years, there's lots of opportunities to get very silly and very thoughtful about every aspect of the universe. there's been some really great analysis recently (here are a few favourites of mine) and also. dentist Beyond Birthday <33

it also creates more interest towards minor characters, in my opinion ! the main cast can start to feel a little too familiar, so we turn to less explored parts of canon. it can bring a sense of novelty in a fandom that hasn't seen new material in ages for most of its characters. arguably because a large part of them are dead lol

and though the fandom isn't small, it is smaller than a lot of other buzzing new ongoing media, which means the circles also run tighter and you keep running into familiar urls. you can meet many lovely people and i've made lots of friends this year alone !!! which is to me the best part of it all
