one thing i noticed (form personal experience and by observing other artists) is that the longer you draw and create, the more boring it gets to simply replicate references, especially when it comes to characers' fashion choices.

with bnha, i keep mine pretty simple and basic because teens ARE very trend-loyal, but mainly im just lazy lol, but when i AM motivated, i love to think about characters' personal style, what could influence them, but also more trivial things such as budget into account, which is why i love to draw Deku in basic tees or clothes provided by his school (while bakugo gets to wear ed hardy and shoto wears arcteryx). i also love to limit the items like its just more realistic to me when someone as ordinary as deku wears the same 5 crewnecks all the time

which brings me to my actual point, namely that the more frequently you draw, the more you learn to do research andto combine your findings into sth new rather than staying faithful to one reference, and i think that's what makes good art so good, being able to draw inspiratioin from all kinds of niches and creating something that feels very authentic and suspends the spectator's disbelief. sometimes i see art and i know exactly which fashion editorial or which kpop idol was referenced, and I'm not insinuating these are bad things i do that too (less frequently now but i sure did!), my point is it's kind of nice to see how ALL artist start out with rather derivative art but eventually move on to create more authentic art that is less about drawing beautiful and perfect people and more about trying to individualize them and that ALSO means giving them weird clothes, scars, asymmetric eyes, a receding hairline etc. like drawing the same beautiful character 200 times gets so boring and it's just more fun to try and make them a bit more human

#i do have a lot of fashion headcanons but i rarely actually draw like that im so lazy #and again im also still stikcing to references and sometimes pretty closely #but this is an observation that i like to think about #as i said i just love artists that draw from a big and diverse source of references and inspirations #and the same applies to other forms of art as well ofc #just because you enjoy one genre and want to write in that genre doesnt mean you should limit your knowledge and inspiration to that genre #its pretty detrimental like you have to read ALL kinds of things #otherwise it's hard NOT to create a derivative work #and you see that with a lot of mangas #like you can kinda tell which battle shonen mangkas are only into other battle shonen and which ones are well read overall #SORRY #or when people who only read fics write their first original story and its an apposition of tropes #my point is its important to dabble in all kinds of niches #dont aim for perfect skills in one niche i think its more fun and beneficial to give everything a try

to be completely frank i think most of the people i've seen with major complaints regarding RGG 8's story are forgetting that 99% of what they're saying can be applied across the whole series

#this is not aimed at anyone in particular i've seen these sentiments all over #but things like 'well the story was mid' ok well come back to me after you've replayed yakuza kiwami. no optional majima everywhere allowed #and things like the ending falling flat - sure. but so did 7's #the pacing in the end chapter + chekhov's failboy were like. huh??? #i'm never gonna call RGGS perfect but they're NOT regressing at all. #if anything gaiden and 8 have got me extremely hopeful for whatever comes next #like it's their 20th anniversary this year they've left so many loose ends in 8 they can carry on from they've got forever to keep going #MY only complaint is that they couldn't have retrofitted more of gaiden into IW but i can't exactly fault them for that #idk for all of the dooming i'm seeing i want to say something more positive about the game as a whole #even if this post is still pretty doom & gloom #people just let their expectations get way too high for this one game and i'm not even sure how that happened in most cases #it met all of mine - hell it EXCEEDED them. but i recognise i may be privileged on that front lol <- kashiwagi likers are eating so well rn #text #8 #again i don't mean to attack anyone in particular it's just a general frustration i've been having #and i only hope that if there comes a time when people play over again that they're able to dig further into the meat of the story #and recognise that this game isn't uniquely 'shit' or 'mid'

Why must I villain au everything I touch??

This page of little doodles was a lot of fun! I started off just drawing Chloé and then her as a Team Galactic member just sort of happened! I kinda made it up as I went lol, but I got really attached to the concept lol.

Basically it would be dependant on Chloe never getting her Eevee or any other Pokémon, and instead more grew to resent them. Everyone had so many expectations of her growing up to be like her dad, and he paid more attention to pokémon then her (not to mention Goh and Ash seeing him more often then she did), eventually culminating in that one episode where her parents cancel their family trip last minute because of Pokémon work and so Chloe goes to Sinnoh alone.

But instead of meeting Dawn there, she meets Cyrus and Team Galactic. I think Cyrus’s whole ‘human emotion and spirit cause suffering so let’s make a world without it’ thing would resonate with her, and she’d join the team, quickly rising the ranks to Commander (much to the chagrin of the other Commanders lol)

Then the Team Rocket Goh idea is something completely different lol, less of an actual au and more of just a two part episode spanning idea. Basically Ash and Goh run into Giovanni and since he’s a Kanto gym leader they end up giving him a tour of Cerise labs. He’s super impressed by how many Pokémon Gohs caught, and so later has some grunts kidnap him and use Hypnos to make him think he was always a Team Rocket member (think season 5 Carmen Sandiego). So then Ash and Chloe have to team up with Jessie and James to get Goh back to normal before it’s too late!

As you can tell I had a lot of fun with these lol

with the rising fascism in the world, im not gonna trust any new medias with stories that make the villain an agent of chaos & terror while the hero/es fight to preserve the status quo.

#after 9/11 there was a rise in childrens media where this was exactly the case #a foreign threat to peace that must be eliminated #and sure there were a lot of good stories made with that format. doesnt erase the true intent being the message. #and now theres come a rise of stories with empires and dictators as villains who are destroyed by rebellions #a good example of the stories about preserving the status quo are literally all of the marvel movies #thats why ragnarok was breath of fresh air. they didnt preserve the legacy of someone who destroyed thousands in the name of 'keeping peace #odin's legacy was burned to ash and thor put his people first. #another example is HP. even the newest stories set hundreds of years in the past still aim to preserve the status quo #and make the oppressed trying to fight back into villains by giving them really good points and then making them into murderers #a good example of a story that does the OPPOSITE is the owl house. god that show was so perfect. #just the subtle touch of luz's magic not having a white core like belos's in the end was so perfect. #making her final most powerful form look like a stereotypical villain with the black eyes and clothes and her dark magic?? #her palisman being able to shapeshift into stereotypically feared animals like spiders scorpions snakes and bats?? #the fact that she looked like a demon while belos was pretending to be carrying out the will of his god? that he was on some holy crusade? #belos believing himself to be the hero of the story even to the bitter end because he couldnt imagine that people he considers subhuman #had any right to life. that they werent just pests to be crushed in the name of his god. and in the end he was the one crushed like a bug. #so good. so good. so good. dana terrace i am kissing you #i like the owl house more than i like gravity falls and BOY is that saying something #krav talks

At least, this is the philosophy I use when making prototypes for things.

I finally reached the fluke stage of the prototyping process and just started the second test. I have a bit of cleaning up to do on it, but I have not been this confident about any of the other iterations and if I get consistent enough results, I can actually move on to other dice shapes! (As much as I just love making a ton of d6s, I just want to be able to move on to the others too)

#mj reinvents the wheel #it's showing progress now which is great #pictures coming soon #I really do hope the things I've learned on this one will translate over to the other shapes just as well #the nice thing about this as well is if the dice are master quality like I'm aiming for they would be better for molding #they're made of epoxy so they wouldn't inhibit silicone #but also I don't have to make a whole master and mold for a one-off commission #put the effort that would go into the making of the master into the final product instead #which just sounds ideal to me #because even if the master ended up perfect you'd still have to sand and polish the die again afterwards #so why not just cut out the middle steps? #plus it uses significantly less silicone to make one and I'm not stuck with a mold I'll only use once #and I may be able to find a use for the individual face designs if they're not too hyper-specific

like even when the thing the person is saying is true i find this concerning. because like, Some Person On Twitter should not be an automatically accepted source on…… anything. like it’s fine to read something like that and be like “oh interesting i’d never heard of this” and then do some more digging. or i mean if it’s not serious it’s also fine to be like “oh huh cool if true” lol. but it stresses me out how many people are wandering around with their default reaction to certain kinds of alleged information, regardless of its provenance, being “thank you for enlightening me, o kind stranger,” and not, “hm, i wonder if there is literally any basis for believing this other than that someone said it was true?”
