The times i’ve made friends on tumblr, I just harass them through asks (like I do you lol), then eventually we pm eachother for something and just keep talking. I’m a serial texting once I become even some what friendly lol.

I shouldn't complain about friendship (and I try very hard not to) because I know that a lot of friendship is based on communication and I'm not a good communicator, but I just find it so hard to talk to people 😭 I feel embarrassed about everything I say even when i know someone

it's totally my fault that it's like this i know i just don't know how to overcome the fear of talking to people. ive always had pretty bad social anxiety and it doesn't end over text im afraid, if anything it's worse 😅 sometimes it gets easier but lately it's been so hard. i wish I could 'harass' people but i don't even like sending one text message half the time

Hello hello! (Gosh y'all are so welcoming, I love it-)

Hrmmmmmm. I don't have a ton of headcanons (yet), but I can certainly come up with a few, lol. Mostly for the personality of our beloved duo.

Edda:

Strikes me as the more "professional" of the two (I mean, look at her idle-). However, this is more true early in the game, while we're still chasing Aven.

That said, when actually revving for a fight, she's more akin to a chihuahua in my head. Smol, but Will Fight You. Also true early on, and just takes on a more chaotic undertone as you progress and she has someone to Protect.

She has impulse control, and half the time knows something is a bad idea, but will do it anyway if she's riled up enough. This also tempers out a (very) little bit, and shifts from "I'm gonna do it anyway" to "Let's see if I can scare the living daylights out of Aven."

Has a serious playful streak, once she get's comfortable. Especially when dashing hither and thon and sprinting across water (Aven refuses to accept any challenges to a race after getting fooled once). I like to think this surfaces after merging with Aven, and that beforehand she was too focused on being "professional" to indulge. Aven gets her to chill a bit.

Aven:

The more casual, even-keel of the two, but early on also a bit chaotic compared to Edda's markedly militant undertones.

Also the more playful by default. He seems like he would have a good sense of humor.

That said, I also envision him as being a little more reserved up-front, given that after the initial awakening, he opts to run rather than fight. I always pictured that as a mix of fear, calculation, and reservation, with emphasis on the reservation since something very new just happened, and he needs to process that before he tries fighting the other participant in that.

(Edda: "He asked for no pickles.")

I also envision him as the rest of Edda's impulse control when her inner chihuahua wins out. This is also the part where he develops grey hairs every time she decides scaring him with a stunt would be fun.

Both Edda and Aven have their aggressive streaks, but where Edda has the aforementioned chihuahua vibes, Aven is more of a porcupine/cactus - he prickles at you, and glares at you, but would also like to deter you from starting the fight if he can, and if he can't, he ain't instigating.

Less of a personality note, but that scarf of his is somehow immune to water (joking off of how in-game it continues to flap underwater, and doesn't get soggy and weighed down), and Edda is jealous. (I would like to think that at least once she snags the end of it to use as an umbrella.)

Some other miscellaneous stuff:

Aven would 100% braid Edda's hair if she lets him (which she might, later on).

As much of a fuss as he makes of it, he doesn't actually mind her using his scarf as an umbrella (even though it doesn't work very well).

Aven is the one who likes taking time to explore, and encourages Edda to slow down and enjoy things (I base this largely off of how Edda has faster movement).

The fight with Angel? Yeah, Aven ends up taking back-seat for that one, and not even because he wanted to, but because Edda has found a Groove and he's not sure he wants to interfere with it.

A similar notion is true of fighting Demon, if for...different reasons. (Basing that both on the angst potential, and on the fact that I pretty much only used Aven for evasive maneuvers and fire in that fight.)

Anyways, that got long-

small ramblings about iterator-made scugs

some spoilers and it's kinda long, so page break inbound

soooo this is just something I'm thinking about. I kinda wonder if the purposed beings/iterator-made slugcats look almost like normal slugcats, but... something about them just looks off.

Hear me out, this isn't just about Spearmaster.

I mean- making a living, functional, sentient being must be extremely difficult, since Suns took like 7 attempts just to make Spearmaster, and Sigs rushed the process and gave Hunter rot (from the chats, I'm pretty sure it was by mistake.) As well as this, adding on things must be difficult too, since you need to be careful with how any kind of mutation affects the being's functions, like how Spears has no mouth so they can't become feral, but they compensate by having porcupine-like needles they can use as a pseudo esophagus, as well as being sharp enough to penetrate and use as a weapon.

You get the idea, it's difficult to make a creature from scratch. I'd like to imagine that unless they try to go as accurate as possible, the iterators could take some liberties to change them slightly, like if there is a certain part of the being that doesn't serve any evolutionary purpose, that the creator doesn't see a need for, or that the creator wants to change/improve for whatever reason. That might be better or at least different for the resulting creature to live with, but removing/changing the trait(s) would most likely make them look really weird.

so uhh...

tl;dr purposed organisms would look strange if their creator didn't care about accuracy and took liberties to change/improve the resulting beings. That's probably not a theory everyone might agree with (open to discussion), but that's how I'm drawing purposed organisms now.

I want to answer it, but I would not be drawing it. So that's gonna be rant format. Not something I usually do.

I saw a couple of artist renditions I liked of how he might look like. I also saw a lot of theories.

My head canon animal for him is hedgehog or porcupine. I actually drawn a fairy version of him with spikes.

I like the theory of Rage. The blinding rage sounds poetic. I think it's an interesting concept to play with. The video I saw for this theory also suggested that his animal could be a bull. It also thrown a couple of names. Like Cronos and Lucios ( if I remember correctly).

I also think it would be interesting to give him a name Ethan. Because Ethos, Logos and Pathos.

Punk aesthetic seems like an obvious choice for him. But could you imagine the different possibilities? Steam punk, deisel punk, desert punk, solar punk??? This could add so much flavor!

Also we have a couple of accessories on the table for debate. Hat, mustache, glasses, ties, face paint. Would he have any of those? We don't know. Will he have something new? Hairpins, pins and needles, necklaces? Spikes?

Also his interaction with Logan we saw. Will they have something in common? Orange didn't seem to interact with anyone else ( if we exclude a literal orange with dramatic music Patton had as a snack in the anniversary video). That might have been a one time interaction also. Logan seems easily frustrated so he's an easy target.

As you can see my thoughts are too chaotic to put into a solid imagine. And the anxiety I get at the thought of drawing it and being wrong in the end is not worth my mental health. So I'm giving you this. When the character is out I will draw a version of him with my head canons. But this is what we have now

connecting my interpretation of Stalker to The Mill, and theories on future pafl events

(heads up, this post spoils the entirety of the movie Stalker, and has slight spoilers for PAFL)

I think just about all of us know that the world of PAFL is loosely based off of the 1979 film, "STALKER" (which you should definitely all watch by the way. it's one of my favorites of all time, and it's free to watch with english subtitles on YouTube)

But a little thought in the back of my mind about Ferrys the mill has constantly been gnawing at me to write about it, so I figured I would, even though I'm mostly grasping at straws. (Haha Occam's Razor reference)

So if you've never actually watched stalker, it's basically a film about three dudes going into the zone, nothing actually happening, and then one of them coming out with a dog. Nothing all that special, but my personal interpretation of the film (which I will repeatedly reference in this post, so I'd reccomend to get aquatinted with it) is that the movie has very prominent themes of faith, the professor and writer had no choice but to have blind faith in the stalker to lead them to the zone, and I think both the professor and writer represent reasons why someone would lose this faith. The writer loses this faith because he realizes that the room might do something to him that he doesn't want, and example he showed through porcupines story, that the room doesn't give you what you ask for, it gives you the deepest desire of your mind, and the writer realizes that he isn't ready for that. He has already had enough change. "Because I wanted to change the world through my writing, but it turned out that THEY were the ones who changed ME!". The professor loses faith because he realizes that the room is a tool that can be used for not only benefit, but for harm, this is why he brings the bomb into the zone. He holds a belief that if the room falls into the wrong hands, it could bring a lot of harm. Tarkovsky doesn't blame the two for losing this faith though, especially the writer at the end of the movie becomes more content with the life he has, and doesn't yearn as strong for anything extraordinary. The only two characters who KEEP faith in the stalker and remain devoted in the movie, end up with more heartwarming endings. And these characters are the stalkers wife, and the dog the Stalker finds inside the zone. The stalkers wife holds faith that he will return safe from the zone, and not end up back in jail, and when they are reunited, the wife talks about this too. Even though they both struggle with their relationship because of the stalkers job, she knows that she's happy, and that she doesn't regret her decision. The dog that the stalker brings back from the zone, not only the fact that dogs can often represent loyalty, but the fact that the dog follows the stalker around the zone, and remains devoted to him, which works, and the dog ends up living with the stalker, having faith in him lead the dog to a better life instead of being a stray. Movie is bassically Tarkovsky saying "be careful what you wish for, and hold faith in those wishes!" (If anyone wants I can talk more about the movie)

there's the movie. And something I've noticed is that the stalker trio has a lot of similarities to a certain three in the mill that could serve to make a theory at future PAFL events

This theory is fully structured apon my guess that Stalker character is representative to one of these three from pafl

1) Nikita- The Stalker

the first point for The Stalker representing Nikita is Nikitas relationship with Nadya and the stalkers relationship with his wife.

In an ask, ferry said:

Both Nadya and the stalkers wife hold blind faith in him, trusting him to come back, even considering how many times he had messed up, both eventually being left abandoned.

Though that does NOT necessarily mean that Nikita/ the stalker don't care for Nadya/the stalkers wife! An example of this that we see in the film is through the cinematography, one of the most noticable changes in the movie is that when the stalker is in the city, when the film first starts the camera footage is black and white, uncaring and murky. (See right)

but when the three eventually get to the zone, the change in cinematography is instantly noticeable, the film grows colorful and so much more GENUINE seeming than the previous black and white footage. The very first thing the stalker does in the zone is collapse onto the wet grass and breathe in the air like he had been holding a breath his entire time outside of the zone. (see left)

I think you can assume what I mean by bringing up this evidence. The zone is one of the only things that the stalker cares about, and this is interesting and all, but here is where my point that both the stalker and Nikita both care for Nadya/ The Stalkers wife, proving that their relationships are very similar.

It's here. At the very end of the film, when the stalker is with his wife and daughter back in the city, during this silent scene the film grows in color again. The stalker really does care about the family he has at home, and he is left with regret on how he has treated them, just like Nikita has.

The main thing about Nikita and the stalker is how those around them are constantly put into a position where it feels like they are FORCED to be dependent on them, to hold faith in them. Nikita's examples for this being Nadya and Kolya, and the Stalkers examples being almost everyone in the movie! They are repeatedly put in a position to the people around them as the sole savior, the one who can lead everyone to what they need and I don't think either of them mind it at all.

about Nikolai as well, I wholeheartedly believe ferry mixed the role of porcupine's brother, briefly mentioned in the movie who got dissolved in the grinder and porcupine blaming himself after, and the part of playing favorites in the movie to create Kolya! in stalker there's a part of the movie where in the grinder, the stalker makes both the professor and writer draw a stick, and it just so happens that the writer gets to go for the grinder!!! Whoopee!!!

Both the stalker and Nikita blame Sergei/porcupine for Nikolais/Porcupine's brother dying in the grinder

But enough about those two stalkers savior complex,

2) Olga- The Writer

See in this passage my argument grows a little more flimsy...but... It's okay (I think)

The writer, at the beginning of the movie, at least, years for something more than what the world can offer him, something past the realm that science can explain. He knows that there is no such thing, he proclaims it loudly, but still he holds hope for something more. He wants to live forever through his writing, and change the people around him as much as possible.

"now you'll live to be a hundred!”

"yes. And why not eternally?" (1:50:20)

...hey, wasn't it said that Olga used to work at the institute before she left to become a stalker? Yup! It has! Although the reason for this has never been said, at least I don't think so. Why would Olga leave such a respected and high paying career? I can assume she ventured into the zone for the same reason as the writer.

the most obvious, though, is that both the writer and Olga survive the grinder (with Olga's case it was heavily implied) but the way they deal with it is quite similar. Both Olga and the writer meet a major change after the incident, the writer realizing what he wants cannot be given to him by the zone, so he gives up on trying to enter the room, instead settling for his quiet life, coming to terms with his problems without the help of any magical zone. So does Olga, I'd say it's also a bit implied that she has toned down on stalking since the incident, as its been directly stated she now works a regular office job. And she's changed physically since the incident too, losing one of her eyes and cutting her hair short, I almost couldn't recognize her during my first watch through of the mill during the shots of when she was younger!

Both the writers and Olgas apathetic attitude towards most of the outside world also resemble each other too, huh?

My last point for the writer representing Olga; is something that's been said directly in a the mill mv before. "Those are all pretty ways of saying she lucks out" she's lucked out throughout all her stalker years, even during the incident I've talked about before. you know, this may have just been an assholey misogynistic comment from Nikita to undermine Olga's experience in the zone, but you know who else lucked out? Very much so, actually? That's right! The writer!

3) Yura and his future- the professor???

Now that we have unpacked all of that, we know that we have one remaining of both trios. Yura, and the Professor. For NOW I can't think of any direct parallels between the two. But that's for now, what we've seen of how Olga and Nikita correlate to both the stalker and the writer makes me wonder, hey, maybe, just maybe, does this mean Yura will try and destroy something in the zone when on the search for KT, even better inside of the institute? Because that's definitely a prediction. can't say anything about this for now, but I would definitely feel like the coolest motherfucker on earth if it did happen.

Are there any members of Defiance that hate the group or might want to usurp Deepdark? Or are threats to his rule?

Cats: Patridge’s ref sheet said that he hated the group(even suggests that he can see beyond their philosophy) and Thrasher said (something along the lines) that dying trying to usurp Deepdark would be a glorious death.

Wolves: It seems Prowl has several children(which I’d assume to also be wolves, or at least hybrids with some other canine) wolves can definitely hunt down a deer, even a male one. He is said to be the superego(morality) could disagree with Deepdark

Cougar: Could definitely have a shot at kill Deepdark, although she has no mates or children to support her in this

Deeplings: The Deepling sheet and some posts shows that some male children dislike Deepdark, they might join up to attempt to kill him.

Now, there is an important factor to put in: The Ash Cluster

It is a large flock of numerous birds, probably from several different species, led by a family of porcupines. Deepdark definitely needs these birds, as they spy on disobedience and can be hard to injure when in the sky if you are not also a bird. Deepdark needs this “sky power” to keep control. This could make Fang the most powerful branch leader. If pushed, she could take a gamble and try to usurp. However, the birds would need to mass swarm Deepdark all at once, as he could easily pick them off one by one.

However. Despite his charisma, his big speeches, his sway, his throne, his control, deep down he is a prey animal.

Is there anything I am missing? I want to piece together this theory to see if there are any more small details I can find (more cats, a weasel, several raccoons, etc)

I will say that his lieutenants are extremely loyal to him. Prowl, Spike, and Fang would never want to betray Deepdark, and are part of the reason he's so well-protected.

So in terms of Sera stealing Lucifer's plans. I like to imagine heaven has a theme park and upon closer inspection it becomes clear it's a copy of Lucifer's Lu Lu world just with everything re themed to fit heaven's aesthetic. This is probably one of the things Lucifer notices in the tour. You know Imitation is the sincerest from of flattery. Also some lucky angel had the assignment of visit Lu Lu land and take notes for Sera.

Imagine if the only reason Heaven has amusement parks and a zoo is because of Lucifer. Maybe the only reason Charlie got to pet an actual koala is because of her father. That would be a nice twist! Hell’s amusement parks and zoos are full of rides and creatures that could kill you. The koalas are probably more like porcupines and breath fire. The ones in Heaven are made to be cuddly and people-friendly. The effort is there in Lu Lu World, but the idea becomes fully realized in Heaven. That’s a neat theory!

Bad would always stay up, even back on the island. So when he couldn't sleep, he would hangout with Dapper late at night - which Richarlyson and Pomme would later join in, leading to them being called the "The Late Night Trio" - or talk to his ghosties or do other types of shenanigans. But here? He couldn't do that. All he could do is sit there alone, listening to the snores of the other members of his team and the sound of the soulfire cackling. Just alone.

Unless Bagi or Etoiles messaged him. Bagi, despite being new to the island, was a nice person to be around with. And her theories were interesting as well so he's always glad when she messages him to talk about them even if they were on opposing teams. They would drink tea and lean on one another while they talked about any logical thoughts (sometimes leading Bad to make a visual representation) and just chill out.

As for Etoiles, he was just a gem to be around with. His jokes and sassy yet sweet personality would always make Bad be glad to have him as his friend. And not only that, but he is incredibly smart so it was nice to talk to him about strategies (though they laid a bit down on that during their time here to not sabotage their teams). At some point they made a camp underground and marked the area with random flowers they found. It was a cozy place to be at and they were able tend to the others wounds and drink tea near the fire in peace without worrying about mobs.

However, tonight, he had a different reason for staying up. A reason he hopes won't happen. For this reason could be one of the fates of his friends.

His friends....his dear friends.....

Every one of his friends that were on that team. They could all be gone. He could have to walk them down that hall, leading them to the afterlife. And it would've been his fault.

If he just didn't turn in those missions. If he just waited. If he just didn't listen to his paranoia. If he just didn't look at the creature he named Coco who reminded him so much like Dapper. If he just didn't ask Coco that question. If he just didn't take the nod and remember his son's words. Then maybe, JUST maybe, they wouldn't have been eliminated. Maybe they would've been able to tie.

Bad stood up and decided to go on a walk. He just needed to relax his mind from these thoughts. He packed some extra tea and went up the elevator. He looked around just in case and got on a boat.

He eventually got off once he hit land and started wandering around, heading in a random direction. But no matter how calming the silence was with the water and the wind dancing, his mind would not rest. The words Dapper told him in that message were now on repeat. His sorrow was now being replaced with a new motivation.

Nothing is off the table. Run over whoever you need to win.

He looked around and went down the elevator and appeared in the little house under the ground. He was greeted with the feeling of warmth from the torches and campfire that were in the room and the smell tea from the previous day was still in the air. He took a second to let it overtake him and tried to relax his body.

"Badboy?"

Startled, Bad's hand immediately grabbed his sword and looked to his side to see who was there. Etoiles, who turned out to be the voice, was sitting in one of the chairs near the campfire and laughing at Bad's sudden action.

"Were you going to kill me, Badboy? I thought we were friends!" said Etoiles while smiling at Bad who put away his sword away and sat down next to him.

"Oh hush, I just got scared. Besides, it wouldn't have mattered. Nothing is affective to players at this hour besides mobs" Bad took some tea out of his bag and poured some of it in a cup, giving it to Etoiles.

"You were still going to stab me!" said Etoiles while he took a sip of the tea. Bad let out a giggle and poured his own cup. He really hopes he's right about the splitting of teams.

They talked for a bit before they quieted down. Their tea cups were put a side and they were looking at the fire. Etoiles laid his head down on Bad's shoulder and Bad's tail started to wrap itself around Etoiles' leg and they sat like that, in silence. The fire cackled in the silence and the smell of their teas filled the air. Everything was so still. So calming.

They didn't say anything about what could happen. It didn't matter. As long as they were able to have a good fight with each other and be able to be together on this lovely night, talking and laughing, then nothing really mattered. They would be together on this lonely night. A demon with his star. Together before disaster.

I'm in love with the "amy is part echidna" theory, so actual!amy also looks very different from actor!amy. I havent fully figured out the details, but actual!amy has a lot more echidna traits, while actor!amy passes as a hedgehog. actor!amy is also part echidna in this, but from further up in her family tree

same with knuckles!! the actor for knuckles is only part echidna, and part uhhh I think I decided on porcupine? or something? since actual!knuckles is the last full echidna. actor!knuckles gets away with not having to dye his fur for the most part, since he has that natural echidna red fur :)

Chainsawman and Hedgehog Dilemma

Chainsaw man main themes deal heavily with human connection, loneliness, and relationships. Many characters feel isolated, alienated, and lack strong relationships with parental figures or their peers despite being surrounded by people. Asa is a prime case of a victim of hedgehog’s theory. 

So lets start off with what hedgehogs dilemma is. Since not all of us are insufferable Evangelion fans like me. Hedgehogs dilemma is depicted by Arthur Schopenhauer and tells the story of porcupines who huddle together during the wintertime to stay warm. The porcupines are hurt by each others quills so they choose to remain at a distance. This echoes the human experience where people choose to stay away from due to fear of intimacy or fear of getting hurt. However, this only ends up hurting us in the long run since we are incapable of forming basic human relationships. 

Asa is tormented by the loss of her family and she now lacks strong relationships with anyone. She puts on this guise that she is above friendships and relationships but it’s defense mechanism to prevent other people from getting close. She is tormented by her past and she has been a victim of people letting her down such as the loss of her precious cat Bon Bon. 

Even when she starts making her first friend ever, the distance still remains. It's apparent in this panel. The physical distance she puts between herself and Yuko illustrates the barriers in Asa’s heart that prevent her from getting close to people.

After the disappearance of her first and only friend, Asa’s hypothetical quills once again appear making her afraid of connection. I think this affects her budding relationship with Denji. She doesn’t trust him not to hurt her. So she is cruel, callous, and cold towards him and tries her very best to not show her vulnerabilities to him. However, Denji is a caring character and tries to break down these walls for her. 

But this doesn’t last as Denji standing her up on her date just confirms her proclivity to hedgehog’s dilemma. She tried to let someone in, to get close to someone, but in the end. He let her down just like everyone else. She once again puts on her guise of an unbothered girl who has no need for human connection. But for a lonely and sad girl like Asa, the cure her problems is in fact connection. 

Asa deeply craves human connection and everything in her life has dissuaded her from making these connections. To be close to someone is to get hurt in the end and all Asa is met with is disappointment after disappointment. She is tired and exhausted with all the pain and suffering and keeping people at an arm’s length is a guaranteed way to not let that happen again. 

I think chapter 127 moment is a pivotal moment for Asa. She can let go of this fear of human connection and getting caught by the “quills” of other people. Or continue to remain in this isolated state, yearning for connection.

I want to end this with a quote by Zizek. “True love is not afraid of getting too close and it is ready to assume the loved object in all its reality and preserve its sublime status.” Hopefully our dear asaden can embrace this sentiment

The ending IS actually explained, they left clues in the aftermath and some dialog in the game

Heidrich the badger was being arrested, which is imo who I think tried to kill Finley and the one sabotaging the hospital... heidrich tried to kill him because of his financial fraud and the destruction of the hospital as a cheap, careless, selfish bastard that he is. He used blackmail on Theobald... ugh Roman Heidrich... Theobald well he really wanted to be able to actively help St. Ursula Hospital in the best way possible he could.. He was appointed chief physician with the help of heidrich, who had alot of influence over the hospital and made him chief as part of the restructuring but was used and pressured and blackmailed into taking money from the hospital for his own crappy bs reasons and if they got caught Theobald would have taken all of the blame as chief so that's why he fled... but he came back to try to help more people, in the end he met his end and tbh I saw it more as a form of suicide from guilt.

The deer brothers who are dumb and drank Shigella nearly killing em which also causes vomiting are used as an example of being poisoned, the town suffers from something similar meaning they also drank something that had some kind of bacterial infection/poison, okay so Finley actually talks to the statue and talks of a dirt not even rain washes away and also the bever man said hes going to fix the fountain for the festival, he mentioned the old pipes from the fountain....that they have seen better days and that the pipes needed proper cleaning/needed to be replaced Ideally but said its not his problem, so we know the pipes are old dirty nasty pipes 🤢....at the festival they turn the water on from the fountain which is warm/hot water which they use that water for the stew for the annual stew making competition which is actually what hurts them... people all around in that town sample the stews and guess what? The towns people get sick within the next few days... Findley and the Jaguar doctor doesn't get sick because they didn't have any stew, also a few people who were too busy making the stew didn't eat the stew either.

The fire was caused by the bad storm caving in the roof which caused damage on the fifth floor so when they tried to turn the power on it started an electrical fire. They show the repair bulldog and bever man fixing the hospital so in the end we know it'll be repaired and they will start anew with their lives and probably properly maintain keeping the building in tip top shape this time with more workers.

You can just Google what deadly bacteria can be found in nasty old dirty rusty probably moldy pipes and make a theory since we didn't get an exact diagnosis.

I honestly couldn't even guess though what bacteria or even diseases can survive warm or hot water. I cannot confirm what disease or poisoning they could have got though. ~All in all it was the fountain water that caused the downfall of the people of porcupine and the burning hospital was just another downfall which was really sad....

The game has alot of meaningful dialog on subjects that are important such as Healthcare, friendship and loneliness ect... Karl, Mia and Irma are my favorite characters.Fall of porcupine gave me tears, goosebumps, alertness, anxious, awwww, and anger feelings.

Looks like Finley got a new plant to and is doing better after all the hard times he went through and will more likely continue his job helping people once the hospital is back up :)

Evangelion: You Can (Not) Marathon — (Part 3)

Neon Genesis Evangelion, “Episode 3: The Phone That Never Rings/A transfer”

Continuing my Evangelion re-watch marathon with NGE, "Episode 3: The Phone That Never Rings/A transfer"! For my thoughts on the previous episode, click the link to the post below:

With that out of the way, let's dig in!

I can’t help but be intrigued by the way Ritsuko describes the umbilical cable as being derived from their current limitations with the Evangelion technology (i.e. without the cord feeding it a continuous stream of electricity the EVA can only operate at 1 minute on its emergency built-in battery and 5 minutes in “minimal activity-gain mode”). Knowing what I know comes later in Episode 19 when Unit-01 ingests the S² Engine from the 14th Angel, Zeurel, I wonder whether or not the limited battery supply was an intentional design-flaw on both NERV and SEELE’s part in order to prevent an Evangelion from achieving a level of power equivalent to God? Or is it a bit of both since NERV’s second branch in the US later tries and fails to duplicate the S² Engine into EVA Unit-04, and SEELE later perfects the S² technology with their Mass Production Evangelions in The End of Evangelion? It just makes you wonder…

Huh… Ritsuko’s observation about Shinji returning to the EVA after his traumatic experience intially piloting it in the previous episode is very interesting and helps reveal some important elements about Shinji’s character pretty early on! Namely, the idea that Shinji “simply does what he’s told to do, and that it’s simply his way of getting through life.”

Essentially Shinji’s self-esteem is so low that he doesn’t even bother to think for or take care of himself, and instead relies solely on the wishes and commands of other people in order to get by in life. It shows that Shinji hates himself to the point that he doesn’t trust his own ability to make decisions for himself, and seeks external validation by pleasing others whether it be his father Gendo, his old sensei, or the other NERV officials like Misato and Ritsuko.

As a personal aside, this is an aspect of Shinji’s characterization that I personally can’t help but somewhat relate to since as an Autistic person who also struggles with obsessive compulsive disorder, I sometimes easily doubt my own sense of judgement, and can become overly dependent upon the advice and reassurance of friends & family in order to get by in life. Such over-reliance can become incredibly monotonous and leave you feeling empty and unfulfilled in life at times, which is effectively conveyed through Shinji’s repetition of the lines, “Position the target in the center then pull the switch,” (Spike Spencer’s dreary delivery here perfectly captures said-feelings of sense of emptiness).

Nice! Our first official reference to the "Hedgehog’s Dilemma," which is a central reoccurring thematic motif for not just Shinji, but several other characters in NGE! For those who aren't aware, the Hedgehog's Dilemma is a metaphor about the challenges of human intimacy which was originally conceived by Arthur Schopenhauer in his 1851 book Parerga and Paralipomena before it was later adopted as a psychological theory by our old pal Sigmund Freud!

In particular, this passage from Volume II, Chapter XXXI, Section 396 of Parega and Paralipomena reads: "A number of porcupines huddled together for warmth on a cold day in winter; but, as they began to prick one another with their quills, they were obliged to disperse. However the cold drove them together again, when just the same thing happened. At last, after many turns of huddling and dispersing, they discovered that they would be best off by remaining at a little distance from one another. In the same way the need of society drives the human porcupines together, only to be mutually repelled by the many prickly and disagreeable qualities of their nature. The moderate distance which they at last discover to be the only tolerable condition of intercourse, is the code of politeness and fine manners; and those who transgress it are roughly told—in the English phrase—to keep their distance. By this arrangement the mutual need of warmth is only very moderately satisfied; but then people do not get pricked. A man who has some heat in himself prefers to remain outside, where he will neither prick other people nor get pricked himself."

In essence, the Hedgehog's Dilemma argues that humans cannot experience love without simultaneously suffering pain, which consequently results in weak relationships and self-imposed isolation.

Based on Misato’s reactions during her phone conversation with Ritsuko where the latter describes the Hedgehog's Dilemma in relation to Shinji's depressive behavior, I get the impression that this is actually Misato’s first time ever hearing about the concept.

Also, when Misato states that Shinji will have to simply outgrow emotionally withdrawing himself from his peers to avoid being hurt since part of growing up is learning to interact with others whilst distancing himself from pain, it feels heavily reflective of Misato’s own life experiences of becoming a lot more outgoing and carefree in public as an adult after spending half her childhood catatonic after being traumatized by Second Impact. While Misato herself is also a victim of the Hedgehog’s Dilemma, she is approaches the conflict a lot differently as an adult in contrast to Shinji who’s still a teenager.

Also also, I love the juxtaposition of Shinji glancing at the injured Rei in the classroom just as Misato provides her voice over of, “Learning to interact with others while distancing himself from pain.”

A brilliant bit of visual storytelling and framing there on Anno’s part!

A few notes about the introduction to Shinji’s classmates Kensuke Aida, Hikari Horaki, & Toji Suzuhara:

-1) Kensuke’s voice acting is hilariously bad in the original ADV dub as he sounds way too old and nasally to be a 14-year-old kid (whilst simultaneously being overly high-pitched). And from what little I’ve seen of the Netflix re-dub, apparently Kensuke’s English voice also sucks in that version as well (I guess Kensuke suffering from crappy voice acting is simply just a rule of thumb no matter which English dub of EVA you decide watch; lol!). -2) I love the subtle foreshadowing of Hikari’s closeted romantic feelings towards Toji here as she immediately reprimands Kensuke for failing to deliver the classwork to Toji after he was absent for several days due to his younger sister being hospitalized in the first Evangelion/Angel battle. -3) I honestly don’t mind Toji’s voice acting as much as I do Kensuke’s (even though his psuedo-Brooklyn accent can be a bit obnoxious at times...). While Toji also has a fairly deep voice, at least his is more in line with the character’s general archetype of being the tough-kid/jock. Also, apparently in the otherwise inferior Netflix Redub he was voiced by Johnny Yong Bosch of Bleach and Trigun fame! That's awesome!

So… the teacher’s exposition about the Second Impact is only partially correct. While the effects of the disaster like Antarctica’s destruction, the rising ocean levels, and the destruction of half of Earth’s population are indeed all true, the idea that it was caused by a meteor is absolute bullcrap. A fake version of the events to hide the true cause of the near-apocalypse to the general public.

And the fact that this teacher bears somewhat of a resemblance to SEELE’s leader Keel Lorenz, I can’t help but feel a tad suspicious of this guy as he shares this false narrative of the event…

Also, fun piece of trivia, this still frame of the teacher is actually the main icon for the official EvaGeeks Wiki!

I love how Shinji immediately answers yes to the question of whether or not he’s the pillow of EVA Unit-01 when he sees one of his female classmates waving at him across the room (implying that she was the one who typed it), and that he can’t help but slightly enjoy all the newfound attention and validation he’s been craving from a predominantly female crowd. Definitely feels like a subtle bit of character-building in regards to Shinji’s deep-seated issues with women and sexuality that become increasingly prevalent as the series progresses.

The way Shinji responds to Toji punching him in retaliation for him accidentally injuring his sister back in Episode 2 with, “I didn’t have a choice, they made me pilot he stupid thing,” combined with Toji angrily punching Shinji again in response… I love how this both reflects Shinji’s continued self-loathing and lack of self-esteem when it comes to piloting the EVA (only seconds after slightly appreciating yet still feeling awkward over the praise he recieved from his other classmates For piloting), as well as Toji’s inital inability to truly understand how emotionally painful being burdened with the responsibility of piloting the giant mecha actually is!

The 4th Angel, Shamshel, has just appeared! According to Wikipedia, this Angel's name is a reference to, "Shamsiel (Hebrew and Aramaic: שִׁמְשִׁיאֵל Šīmšīʾēl, "God is my sun" Greek: Σεμσιήλ Semsiḗl), also spelled Samsâpêêl, Shamshel, Shashiel or Shamshiel, was the 16th Watcher of the 20 leaders of the 200 fallen angels that are mentioned in the Book of Enoch. The name means "God is my sun", which is fitting since it has been said that Shamsiel taught men the signs of the sun."

I’ve gotta say… Shamshel's design is just… bizarre... in a manner that’s simultaneously fascinating and disturbing. On the one hand it has this cool manta-ray or cobra-like appearance (with some centipede-like legs) whenever it's viewed from both the front and above in regards to the shape of its head. Plus, it also has these cool electrical-whips which it utilizes as melee-weapons! But on the other hand, the shape of Shamshel's head combined with its elongated body feels intentionally suggestive, as does the design of the Angel’s mouth and core underneath its head.

I like how Shinji is already questioning his decision to return to piloting the EVA after already realizing from the previous episode that his father won’t acknowledge him (as seen in their brief non-verbal encounter in the elevator after the battle with Sachiel) as well as having been punched by Toji as a consequence for his actions while piloting! Shinji honestly doesn’t know why he’s piloting. At least on a conscious level…

Also, the fact that Shinji continues to monotonously repeat the words “Position the target in the center then pull the switch,” as he fires upon Shamshel is another nice touch, especially since he does so while wasting all of his ammo in the process. It just goes to show that aimlessly following orders without motivation or drive never pays off…

Also also, the fact that Shinji immediately panics upon realizing that the instructions he was repetitively following from Misato earlier in the episode backfire on him (he emptied his ammunition so quickly that he blinded himself to the Angel’s whip attacks with the smoke of his own gunfire) is another important bit of character development in this regard!

Also also also, the tension really increases when Shamshel not only severs EVA Unit-01's umbilical cable, but Shinji is forced to welcome Kensuke & Toji into his Entry-Plug for protection when the two idiotically abandoned Tokyo-3's civilian evacuation shelter to watch the battle in-person.

Holy crap! I honestly forgot just how badass the scene of Shinji stabbing Shamshel’s core with his progressive-knife as EVA Unit-01’s power rapidly depletes is! The animation, the soundtrack, the ticking-clock, and Spike Spencer’s voice acting of Shinji’s screams here all work in perfect synchronization to truly elevate the amount of tension in this fight scene!

At the same time however, I am rather curious as to what exactly was going on in Shinji’s head when he spontaneously decided to disobey Misato’s orders for once and actually kill the Angel head-on instead of retreating, once again stating the iconic line of, “I mustn’t run away!” Did Shinji feel that because following orders previously failed to defeat the Angel or win him the acceptance of others, he might instead gain said-acceptance by doing the exact opposite? Especially since Toji was inside the Entry-Plug right alongside him? Or was it a form of subconcious guilt for previously having hurt Toji’s sister, and wanting to do whatever he could to make amends?

And speaking of Toji, I love the look on his face after Shinji kills Shamshel, as this is the exact moment where he finally starts to develop a sense of empathy and understanding towards Shinji’s burden as an EVA pilot!

I’ve gotta say, I remember being both incredibly shocked and impressed by the level of depth Anno managed to provide Toji’s character when I first watched the series! Like… when we first saw him punch Shinji I was honestly afraid that Toji was primarily going to be relegated to the role of the generic stereotypical school bully/jock. But to witness Toji immediately begin expressing regret for previously lashing out at Shinji after witnessing just how psychologically painful piloting the EVA is for Shinji (even though he publicly tries to deny said-regret in front of Kensuke due to his gruff exterior), it conveyed a surprising level of dimension to this character IMO, actively subverting the boring archetype that I initally feared Toji would be even though he does still embody some elements of stereotypical toxic masculinity in fiction. Definite kudos on Anno’s part there!

Also, for whatever reason Misato’s voice overs for the “Next Episode” teasers are different on the Blu-Ray than they were on my original DVD copies despite Alison Kieth still being present. I’m guessing it was a change between the Perfect and Platinum editions… random but okay… though it’s only in the teaser for Episode 4 that Misato finally gives her trademark running gag of promising more fan-service (which is honestly a lie since there's hardly any legitimate fan-service in NGE, and is mostly just another showcase of Misato's overtly sexual personality). In the previous two teasers Misato instead promised “something a little extra,” which is less funny IMO)…

But yeah, overall that was NGE, "Episode 3: The Phone That Never Rings/A transfer"! I really love the insight this episode gives into Shinji’s psychology in regards to his lack of motivation and self-esteem, as well as the introduction of the Hedgehog’s Dilemma which heavily defines not only Shinji’s actions but the those of the rest of the cast! Plus, the fight with Shamshel was FREAKING epic, and the subverting of tropes with Toji’s character was another strong highlight of the episode!

Next up is Episode 4, and I’m really excited to revisit that one as it’s always been one of my personal favorite entries in the entire series!
