I'm not paid enough to deal with five year olds that eat books, I'm just not.

Making a list of what I’ve witnessed/done/learned in the months I’ve worked as a SPED Paraprofessional at Pre-K:
• taught 4 year olds what the skin on your elbow is called
• taught another 4 year old how to wink
• convinced one of my favorite kids that he has a little friend named ghosty ghost following him around who pokes him at random intervals throughout the day
• taught a special needs student who didn’t speak when I met him how to communicate with me specifically through hand signals that indicated what animal he was - does it swim/fly/walk, what does it eat, is it big/small - to which he now speaks more now then he has probably ever
• got played by a 4 year old who wanted a second snack so he casually slid me the last two gushers from his bag and then turned to the teacher and said, “I’m done!”
• got a group of special ed pre-k kids to officially deem bath and body works eucalyptus hand sanitizer as “the good stuff”
• made a joke to a three year old that the enormous books he read after snack every day made him look like he was reading a newspaper. They made a joke every single day that they were on their way to read their newspapers. (It was a volcano book) 😭
• learned that pipe cleaners have metal in them. Yes, I am twenty four.
learned who Pete the Cat was
• learned that adult women between the ages of 35-40 really do act like adult children
• got complimented that my hair was “rapunzel hair” despite it not being cut for like 7 months
• learned how to be a physical touch person despite hating being hugged but hey, four year olds want to hug you constantly and how are you going to deny those puppy dog eyes?
ended up buying one of the little ones who lost his house in a tornado a stuffy and a book.. took it to his house, where he then proceeded to act like he had no idea who I was (it was cute in the moment)
apparently line tag is a thing??? on a basketball court??
oh also, they crack up with laughter when I play tag with them!
they smell markers for sport
You think they realize common little games like staring contests and then when you realize they don’t and teach them anyway they go around and teach their little minions
I have heard them sing: Barbie Girl, Flowers, Unholy, and the one song from Wednesday I can’t remember the name of 😂
I had a guy pass me a love note through his second grade son. No joke. He gave it to his kid, who gave it to the teacher to give to me, and the note was asking me out on a date.
Had a 4 year old straight up innocently say a curse word from his encoded message to his father which said, “dad: please don’t bust my a** anymore.” (Which, according to aunt who worked in building, has only happened once) And about DIED from laughing so hard. So did the teachers.
I got addicted to the snacks I had never tried until working with pre-school. SunChips and Rice Krispies never die.
Found out one of my little boys called me Carla to his parents because they couldn’t quite figure out what name he was saying. It was only upon meeting me that they said, “oh YOU’RE Kayla! We called you Carla for days!”
They sang a song about Goldfish. That song is now burned into my memory. Why is some young children’s music so freaking catchy?
On the last day, my favorite girl turned around to look at me before she got on the bus. I didn’t have the heart to really tell her that I wasn’t coming back. What I said was very brief. When she did turn around, I waved. She waved back. Little did she know I BROKE the second she walked through that door and disappeared. I didn’t think I’d come to love her as much as I did but she made it so EASY.
My oldest boy who I was the aide for? I met his grandmother, and she now sends me such wholesome photos of him and stresses that my loving him the way I did made a huge difference. She doesn’t know how hard I cry every single time she says it.
They have lungs. And I made the mistake of sticking them on high swings they can’t get to by themselves, which they all want to fight over, so half the time I wanted to just talk to teachers I ended up hearing: “MISSSSSSSSS KAYLLLAAAA!!! WILL YOU COME PUSH ME?” Hollered across the playground.
^ I will never make that same mistake again. 😂
Not everyone is meant for pre-school, but MAN… did I love it.
Cons: I never got included in anything by the teachers or their aides. They never included me, and man did that sting.
I GOT PINK EYE IN BOTH EYES THE DAY AFTER SCHOOL ENDED FOLKS

I got invited to talk to pre-kindergarteners
So they’re doing a Mr Rogers/Daniel Tiger themed unit on ‘helpers in our community’ and my neighbour asked if I could talk to the kids about my job (I’m a labour and delivery nurse).  Guys, it was the CUTEST TALK OF MY LIFE! I gave them a quick rundown of ‘before babies get born, they live in an organ called the uterus that’s in a person’s belly.  I help babies come out of the uterus and come out into the world where we can hold them and cuddle them.’  I tried to keep it basic, but not assume anyone’s family structure. I really only talked for about five minutes and then the teacher opened the floor to questions.  The kids were shy, so the teacher asked if anyone had a baby at home.  It went something like this:  Teacher: Does anyone have any questions? Kid 1: I HAVE A QUESTION!  I have a baby at home. Teacher: That’s wonderful!  Does anyone else have any questions? Kid 2: OH YEAH?  Well I have TWO babies at home! Teacher: Oh wow, are they twins?  That’s really cool!  Anyone else? Kid 3: Me!  Me!  I have!  I have THREE BABIES!” Friends, we made it to TWELVE BABIES before the teacher decided that the competition of who had the most babies at home was over and sent me on my way.  It was the cutest thing I’ve ever seen in my life!

Dedre' & Ella Jefferson Early Learning Center, an Alief ISD school, in Houston, Texas was designed by PBK.
It's leading the way with innovative Pre-K to prepare young learners for success in Kindergarten and beyond. Jefferson is organized by Neighborhoods (Discovery, Inquiry, & Voyages) and Houses (including Space City, Gulf Coast, & Going Places) instead of wings and classrooms.
The school was built by Satterfield & Pontikes Construction, with engineering by Salas O'Brien and landscaping by TBG Partners. They partnered with The Nature Conservancy for the prairie restoration areas that surround the building.

Dear Gus & Magnus,
Today was Gus's last day of Pre-K, so I asked Mom to send me a picture of him with Ms. Cookro. When people have asked him lately how much school he has left, he's known the exact number of days, and then he launches into telling them how we're going to go to the beach this summer -- we have no plans for that and it seems unlikely. Despite what we've clearly told him, I don't think he's grasped that he's going to spend the summer going to day camp at PHUMC. He'll start kindergarten in the fall. We're proud of how well he's done in different school environments.
Dad.

I Can't Wait for Kindergarten
As I read the thousandth post this month about a mom being sad her “baby” is starting kindergarten, I started to wonder… What’s wrong with me? Why don’t I feel that way? Am I some kind of cold momster because I’ve been practically counting down the days to kindergarten since he was an infant? Honestly, on some particularly rough days the only thing getting me through this stay-at-home-mom stint…

So a new Cocomelon dropped on Netflix recently, and I was kinda dreading it, but I’ll be damned if it actually isn’t pretty tolerable for a preschooler show. Like, they have a real plot, vocabulary and ethics lessons integrated, and I actually heard competent lyrics in some of these songs.

The Academy of the Holy Names was established in 1881 by the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary.
Tumblr media
We are one of many schools begun by this congregation of women religious during the 19th and 20th centuries in Canada and the United States.
Tumblr media
The Sisters envisioned a Catholic education that would empower children and youth to unlock their God-given gifts and develop their full human potential for the transformation of society.
Tumblr media
Through decades of education ministry, the Sisters of the Holy Names have shared their charism—a gift from God for the good of God’s people—from Blessed Marie Rose Durocher, who founded their community in 1843 in rural Quebec.
Tumblr media
A woman of hope, Blessed Marie Rose inspired her Sisters with a caring hospitality, a discerning heart, and a faith deeply rooted in God’s love. She promoted an education in the faith rooted in the Gospel and a special concern for those who are poor and marginalized.

First kid day rant.
Stream-of-consciousness saltiness below. Cursing is involved.
My first day with kids as a pre-K paraprofessional went pretty bad. The other para got in a fight with the music therapy teacher, said music therapy teacher had a mild panic attack, the kids were like herding cats trying to get them to different activities and rooms, one kid threw a tantrum and bit me hard, and to top it all off I got shoved onto a bus to take a special ed kid with only one hour's notice, and no training, and I had to find my way home from their house.
Did I mention that I'm expected to check emails twice a day and I still don't even have a username and password to log into the system with, much less an email? And that I'm also expected to fill out a timecard and do training that are ALSO LOCKED BEHIND THAT USERNAME AND PASSWORD? And that I'm supposed to do this on a school-issued tablet that I haven't heard nor seen any hint of?
Oh and I got yelled at for texting mum that I was coming home late because of being shoved onto the school bus. I know I'm in my twenties, but I'm not addicted to my phone! I just wanted to tell mum that I was going to be super late coming home, since that kid's house is way in the middle of a public transit desert, and I have to wait a long time for a very slow bus route to pick me up.
HR is fucked. IT is fucked. Everyone is fucked. There's so many systems falling apart. "Hey, welcome to school, now figure out everything on your own! You worked a summer job with neurotypical kids so clearly that's enough experience to throw you in a special ed class with no additional training!"

DINOS ABC ROAR AUDIOBOOK Sample | Kids Are Happy Learning ABC’S
Parents want to make early learning for their children as fun and easy as possible. I narrated a few of my ebooks for toddlers, preschoolers, kindergarteners and first graders to help children learn ABC’S, 123’S and colors quickly and easily. This also takes the pressure off of parents, grandparents and childcare givers as children can listen to the audiobooks again and again. Here is an…
