MOVIE 1 - 3 IDIOTS

In 1999, students Farhan Qureshi and Raju Rastogi of the Imperial College of Engineering in Delhi, struggle to compete within its cutthroat academic culture. Farhan is passionate about wildlife photography but chose to join in order to appease his father, while Raju is in need of a career that will extricate his family from poverty. Their roommate, the eccentric Ranchoddas "Rancho" Shamaldas Chanchad, who is genuinely passionate about engineering, gives unorthodox answers in class and frequently clashes with the school's director, Viru "Virus" Sahastrabuddhe, since he believes that students should enjoy what they learn, despite their strict teaching model.

When a student named Joy Lobo commits suicide after failing to meet a project deadline and being denied graduation by Virus, Rancho confronts Virus about the pressure placed on the students to succeed, but his rebellious behavior puts a strain on Farhan and Raju's relationships with their own families. Raju attempts to distance himself from Rancho, but when Raju's paralyzed father needs a medical emergency, Rancho saves his life by taking him to the hospital with the help of Virus' younger daughter Pia, who begins to fall in love with Rancho. At the end of the year, Rancho is shown to have topped the school's rankings despite his disdain for its education system, while Farhan and Raju continue to fall behind.

One night, while severely drunk, the trio break into Virus' house, where Rancho confesses his feelings to Pia and the other two urinate on his property. Virus spots them amidst their escape and tells Raju he will be thrown out of campus unless he helps him expel Rancho. A distraught Raju attempts suicide, but recovers due to committed care from his friends and family. With newfound perspective on his life, Raju successfully applies for a job, while Farhan receives an apprenticeship offer from his favorite photographer and earns his father's blessings.

An infuriated Virus attempts to sabotage Raju's chances of success by holding an unfairly difficult exam. With Pia's help, Rancho and Farhan break into his office to steal the exam papers and though Raju refuses to cheat, the trio are caught and expelled by Virus. Pia confronts her father over her brother's suicide, which was prompted by similar pressure placed on him by Virus to become an engineer at the expense of his own ambitions. That night, during a rainstorm that causes widespread flooding and power outrages, Virus' older daughter Mona, who is pregnant, goes into labor. Unable to drive to a hospital, Rancho and the other students use their engineering knowledge to quickly modify a vacuum cleaner into a ventouse and deliver the baby with the help of Pia. A grateful Virus acknowledges Rancho as an extraordinary student and revokes the expulsions. On graduation day, Rancho promptly disappears, and is never seen by his friends again.

Ten years later, Raju, now a business executive, and Farhan, a photographer, are both successful in their chosen careers. Their former classmate Chatur, now a wealthy executive in an American company, calls them, claiming to know Rancho's whereabouts in Shimla, and the three of them head out to find him. Upon arrival, they find a different man living by Rancho's name and degree. Upon confrontation, the man explains Rancho was his family's orphaned servant boy, who was tasked with completing his entire education for him all the way through, to earn a degree at ICE. He tells them Rancho had cut off all contact with his friends and gives them his actual address in Ladakh. Farhan and Raju decide to bring Pia along with them. Chatur protests the detour, as it would jeopardize his planned meeting with the illustrious client "Phunsukh Wangdu," a renowned scientist, but the duo meet up with Pia, who joins them.

In Ladakh, the group finds a thriving engineering school in the mountains for local children. They learn that Rancho has kept up to date with their careers and reunite with him. Rancho admits he is still in love with Pia and they decide to marry. Chatur assumes that Rancho is a lowly schoolteacher, but Rancho reveals his real name to be Phunsukh Wangdu, the successful client he has been after. The friends happily celebrate their reunion.

My favorite character is Rancho aka Phunkshu Wangru the guy who struggled to become in life and also how he gave his advice to his room and friend Farhan and Raju and as well as how he still win over that guy who challenged him and as well as how he win his love Priya in the end and as well as how his dreams come true in the end and Priya wronged him that nose never come between when a boy and girl kiss. He is one of the most remarkable character which was played by Aamir Khan and as well as he played a big role as that character had lots of guts but no fear in his life as in the end he also work with office and also become a school teacher in the end.

MOVIE 2- AVENGERS ENDGAME

Twenty-three days after Thanos used the Infinity Gauntlet to disintegrate half of all life in the universe,Carol Danvers rescues Tony Stark and Nebula from deep space and returns them to Earth, where they reunite with the remaining Avengers—Bruce Banner, Steve Rogers, Thor, Natasha Romanoff, and James Rhodes—and Rocket. Locating Thanos on an uninhabited planet, they plan to use the Infinity Stones to reverse "the Snap", but Thanos reveals he destroyed the Stones to prevent further use. Enraged, Thor decapitates Thanos.

Five years later, Scott Lang escapes from the quantum realm. At the Avengers' compound, he explains to Romanoff and Rogers he experienced five hours, not years, while trapped. Theorizing the quantum realm could allow time travel, they ask Stark to help them obtain the Stones from the past to undo Thanos' actions in the present. Stark refuses, thinking about his wife, Pepper Potts, and daughter, Morgan, but relents after musing on the death of Peter Parker. Stark, Rocket, and Banner, who has since merged his intelligence with the Hulk's strength, build a time machine. Banner notes changing the past does not affect their present; any changes instead create branched alternate realities. He and Rocket visit the Asgardian refugees' new home in Norway—New Asgard—to recruit Thor, now overweight and drinking heavily, despondent over his failure to stop Thanos. In Tokyo, Romanoff recruits Clint Barton, now a vigilante following Thanos' disintegration of his family.

Banner, Lang, Rogers, and Stark travel to New York City in 2012. Banner visits the Sanctum Sanctorum and convinces the Ancient One to give him the Time Stone. At Stark Tower, Rogers retrieves the Mind Stone, but Stark and Lang's attempt to steal the Space Stone fails, allowing 2012 Loki to escape with it. Rogers and Stark travel to S.H.I.E.L.D. headquarters in 1970, where Stark obtains an earlier version of the Space Stone and encounters his father, Howard. Rogers steals Pym Particles from Hank Pym to use in returning to the present, and spies lost love Peggy Carter.

Meanwhile, Rocket and Thor travel to Asgard in 2013, extracting the Reality Stone from Jane Foster and retrieving Thor's hammer Mjolnir. Barton and Romanoff travel to Vormir in 2014, where the Soul Stone's keeper, the Red Skull, reveals it can only be acquired by sacrificing someone they love. Romanoff sacrifices herself, allowing Barton to obtain the Soul Stone. Nebula and Rhodes travel to Morag in 2014 and steal the Power Stone before Peter Quill can.Rhodes returns to the present with the Power Stone, but Nebula becomes incapacitated when her cybernetic implants link with those of her past self, allowing 2014 Thanos to learn of his fate at the hands of the Avengers. Thanos replaces present-day Nebula with 2014 Nebula.

Reuniting in the present, the Avengers place the Stones into a technological gauntlet Stark, Banner, and Rocket have created. Banner, the most resistant to the Stones' gamma radiation, is chosen to wield the gauntlet and reverses the disintegrations. Meanwhile, 2014 Nebula uses the time machine to transport 2014 Thanos and his warship to the present, where he attacks the Avengers' compound looking for the Stones. Present-day Nebula convinces 2014 Gamora to betray Thanos but is unable to convince 2014 Nebula and is forced to kill her. Confronted by Stark, Thor, and a Mjolnir-wielding Rogers, Thanos outmatches them and summons his army from his warship to retrieve the Stones, intent on using them to destroy the universe and create a new one. Stephen Strange arrives with other sorcerers, the restored Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy, the Ravagers, and the armies of Wakanda and Asgard to fight Thanos and his army. Danvers arrives and destroys Thanos' warship, but Thanos overpowers her and seizes the gauntlet. Stark steals the Stones and uses them to disintegrate Thanos and his army, at the cost of his own life.

Following Stark's funeral, Thor appoints Valkyrie as the new ruler of New Asgard and joins the Guardians. Rogers returns the Infinity Stones and Mjolnir to their original timelines and remains in the past to live with Carter. In the present, an elderly Rogers passes his shield and mantle to Sam Wilson.

MOVIE 3- Detective Pikachu

In the Pokémon universe, Tim Goodman is a 21-year-old insurance adjuster who gave up his dream of being a Pokémon trainer following the death of his mother and his estrangement from his father Harry, a police detective. Tim is contacted by the police of Ryme City, a city where humans and Pokémon live together in harmony and Pokémon battles are illegal. He is informed by Harry's friend, Detective Hideo Yoshida, that Harry was killed in a car accident. Tim goes to Harry's apartment to sort things out and meets Harry's police partner, a deerstalker-clad amnesiac talking Pikachu whom only Tim can understand; all others simply hear him say "Pika-Pika." Tim accidentally releases a mysterious purple gas, "R," from a vial he finds in Harry's office; they are then attacked by a party of Aipom who became rabid under the gas's influence.

The pair escape and Pikachu explains that after losing his memory following the crash, he believes that Harry also survived the crash as the police never found his body. They meet an informant of Harry's, a Mr. Mime who directs them to an underground illegal Pokémon battle arena. The arena's owner, Sebastian, recognizes Pikachu as the Pokémon who injured his Charizard in a previous battle and demands a rematch. He doses Charizard with "R", stirring it into a violent rage and Pikachu is unable to summon his electrical powers to fight back. While attempting to save Pikachu, Tim knocks Sebastian over and breaks several gas vials in his jacket, sending the arena's Pokémon into a frenzy. The arena is raided by police and Tim is brought to Yoshida, who reveals footage of Harry's crash, explaining that it is impossible for Harry to have survived.

Tim and Pikachu are contacted by Howard Clifford, the wheelchair-bound founder of Clifford Industries, who created Ryme City as a utopia for Pokémon and humans. Howard reveals Harry was abducted by a genetically engineered Pokémon called Mewtwo, who erased Pikachu's memory. He warns Tim that his son Roger is behind the creation of "R". Tim and Pikachu recruit aspiring journalist Lucy Stevens and her Psyduck and travel to the abandoned genetics lab Harry was investigating. The lab's personnel had been experimenting on Mewtwo and synthesized "R" from his genes. They are attacked by genetically enhanced Greninja and Pikachu is gravely injured. Tim begs a Bulbasaur to help Pikachu and it leads them to Mewtwo, who heals Pikachu before being captured by Roger. Pikachu remembers that he helped Mewtwo escape from the lab and believes he was responsible for betraying Harry. Not trusting himself, he leaves Tim.

Pikachu comes across the crash site and finds evidence that it was the Greninja, not Mewtwo, who were responsible for the crash. In Ryme City, Howard reveals the captured Mewtwo to Tim, exposing himself as the true mastermind by taking control of Mewtwo's body using a neural-link helmet that places his mind inside Mewtwo while his human body remains in the wheelchair. He explains that Mewtwo can fuse humans and Pokémon, allowing humans to evolve as Pokémon can and become one with them, but this can only be done if the Pokémon is in a confused state, thus the need for "R". Believing this is the future of humankind, Howard releases "R" across the city using parade balloons and begins fusing humans with their Pokémon. Pikachu summons his electrical powers to battle Mewtwo while Tim fights Howard's genetically modified Ditto, who had been impersonating Roger; the real Roger had been tied up and gagged by his father. Tim manages to remove Howard's helmet from his body, freeing Mewtwo from his control.

Mewtwo restores the city inhabitants to normal, Howard is arrested, and Roger hires Lucy as a full-time reporter, vowing to fix his father's mistakes. Mewtwo explains that Harry tried to save him from Howard and helped him escape, but was attacked by the Greninja. Pikachu had volunteered to have himself fused with Harry to save his life, the experience erasing both their memories. Mewtwo separates the two and Harry reunites with Tim in his human body. Tim decides to stay in Ryme City to become a detective and spend more time with his father and Pikachu.

ML: Are They Worthy? Chapter 78: Bliss!/Effector!

(Warining: Transphobia near the end.)

On the helicopter, the night of the chase:

Receiver Deceiver appeared and destroyed Catalyst’s tablet and knocked her out. “What are you doing?!” Scarlet Moth said.

“A cure for your wife? That’s it? No absolute power? No asking everyone like you? Nothing?”

“I don’t care for all of that!” Scarlet Moth said.

“Well, I need a fix,” Receiver Deceiver said. “So, if you aren’t going to use the power of the miraculous to their fullest extent, then I will!” She charged at Scarlet Moth. He tried to settle her down, but she had been willingly akumatized so many times that she could fight it. She tackled him, and both of them were sent falling out of the helicopter.

There was a bit of a struggle in the air, but Scarlet Moth managed to kick Receiver Deceiver away. However, he was still falling. By the time he could try figuring out something, he landed face first on a stone gate and fell on the ground.

When he came to, he was Gabriel again. He rubbed his head. “Ugh. What’s going on?” he asked, sitting up.

Nooroo flew up to him, carrying a discarded poncho. “Here” he said. “Put this on.” Gabriel seemed very confused. Nooroo noticed Ladybug on the horizon. “Hurry!” Gabriel put the poncho on.

“Follow me!” Nooroo flew off to hide from Ladybug. Gabriel followed. “Alright, we should be safe now Master.” Nooroo looked at Gabriel. “Master?”

“What is going on?” Gabriel said.

“Ladybug was trying to get to you on the helicopter, but Lila betrayed you” Nooroo explained.

Gabriel seemed even more confused than before. “Ladybug? Lila?”

“Um, Master?” Nooroo said.

“What are you even?” Gabriel said. “You look sort of like a butterfly, but you can talk? Furthermore, why am I in the middle of Paris?”

Nooroo was now confused. “Where should you be?” he asked.

“At the cathedral,” Gabriel said. “I’m supposed to be getting married today.”

“Oh no,” Nooroo said, coming to a realization. “Master? What year is it?”

“1998” Gabriel answered with no hesitation.

“Oh dear” Nooroo said. “You hit your head harder than I realized.” Gabriel was more confused than ever. “Look, I’ll explain everything when I have the time, but right now just know that it’s not the year you think it is. You hit your head really hard, and are suffering from amnesia.”

“Oh great. I’m in a bad soap opera” Gabriel remarked.

“It gets worse,” Nooroo said.

“I figured as much,” Gabriel retorted. “I’m assuming you somehow make sense.”

“Yeah,” Nooroo said. “For now, we need to collect ourselves.”

“How?” Gabriel asked.

Nooroo looked around. “Follow me.” He flew off somewhere. Gabriel tentatively followed him. Nooroo thought to himself. Well, if he’s like this, it would be easy to turn him into Ladybug. But I can’t go against him, and he’s in no condition to reverse that. He needs to do this by himself. However, that doesn’t mean I can’t push him in the right direction.

The pair eventually made it to Agreste manor. They snuck passed some cops who were inspecting the area to a secret elevator. Nooroo rigged it so they could have access to it. They eventually went down to a bunker that was adjacent from the place where they were keeping Emilie.

There was a view to it through one-way glass. Nooroo looked out and saw that Emilie was missing. “That’s odd,” he said to himself. “Perhaps they already took her. I need to investigate.”

Nooroo turned to Gabriel. “Alright, you need to stay here. I need to go out. There should be enough food to last you a few days in here if need be.”

“Hold on!” Gabriel demanded. “I want answers! What are you? Where are we? Why do we need to hide?”

All of these were fair questions to someone who just lost their memory. Nooroo had to be careful though. He wanted him to turn himself in, but he couldn’t hide what was going on. He just needed to fudge a few details.

“OK,” Nooroo said, collecting himself. “First, let’s start with me. I am what’s known as a kwami. I am a magical being that inhabits a jewel known as a miraculous. With it, I can grant people the power of transmission”

“Are you the only one?” Gabriel asked.

“No,” Nooroo answered. “I am one of many. And for a while, an evil person by the name of Hawk Moth had me in their clutches. He wanted to fuse the two most powerful miraculous to grant a wish.

However, there were heroes that stood in his way. The keepers of said miraculous, Ladybug and Cat Noir. Eventually, they found him. He tried to run away while causing endless chaos in Paris. Ladybug and Cat Noir, along with help from other heroes managed to put a stop to it. After Hawk Moth but you up to doing evil, something happened to him, and you came into possession of my miraculous during all of that, but were injured in the process.”

“I see,” Gabriel said. “Well, I suppose it makes sense. I’m not in a position to argue much now, am I? So, what is this place?”

“This is your house,” Nooroo said. “Well, more specifically, a bunker within your house.”

Gabriel seemed more shocked by that fact than any of the stuff previous. “My house? But it looks so expensive. I mean, I’m but a mere fashion designer. I mean, I know Emilie’s family is loaded, but I would have hated to borrow from them.” Nooroo sighed. “Between the time you think it is and the time it actually is, you’ve become the head of a fashion empire.”

“Oh” Gabriel said. “I mean, I’ve always dreamed of that, but to see it actually happen...it’s just...wow…”

“Anyway, I need to investigate,” Nooroo said. “You need to stay here and get your strength up. You should be alright in here.”

“WAIT!” Gabriel called. “Where’s Emilie in all of this?”

Nooroo seemed dejected. “She also went missing during the attack.”

“Then I must find her!” Gabriel said.

“NO!” Nooroo demanded. “You’re in no condition to go out. You used up a lot of strength. I can search for her, and the moment I find where she is, I will tell you.”

Gabriel paused. “Very well.” Nooroo flew off.

Nooroo headed to Gabriel’s computer to see if anything was on the Ladyblog. He found various pieces of information. How the team had taken Emilie, and that she was alive and recovering in a hospital. They didn’t say which hospital though, but Nooro was glad he got as far as he did.

At that moment, some officers came in and Nooroo hid. If he got caught, they would find Gabriel. They were sweeping for any clues that might lead to Gariel, as well as pick up any evidence left behind.

Once the officers left, Nooroo headed back down to Gabriel. He had his phone out. “What is this thing?” Gabriel asked.

Nooroo sighed.’That is a cell phone.”

“It seems pretty advanced,” Gabriel replied.

“It kind of is” Nooroo answered. “It’s not just a phone. It’s basically a mini computer.”

“Huh” Gabriel said. “I thought phones were in the process of getting smaller. But I guess they got bigger instead.”

“Is that all?” Nooroo asked.

“No,” Gabriel said. He took out his wallet and took a few Euros out. “What are these things, and where are all my Francs?”

“Those are Euros,” Nooroo answered. “The currency was introduced in 1999 and is used by almost all of the members of the European Union.”

“Huh” Gabriel responded.”I’m sorry. It’s just hard to comprehend everything. Here I am, thinking it’s my wedding day, and suddenly it’s not.”

“It’ll be OK, Master,” Nooroo said.

Gabriel smiled. “Thanks. Hey, do you call all of the people who have your miraculous ‘Master’?”

Nooroo chuckled. “It’s an old habit.”

“Hm. So, why are you back down here?” Gabriel asked.

“Oh, right. I want to say, I found that your wife is safe, and in a hospital” Nooroo said. “The problem is, I don’t know which one. I’m going to have to search, but it could take me awhile.”

“I understand,” Gabriel said. “To be honest, I’m feeling pretty fatigued. My head is killing me, I have amnesia, and everything I don’t know is a lot to take in. I trust you. Don’t worry.”

“OK master,” Nooroo said.

“I’m gonna try to sleep,” Gabriel said. “Maybe when I wake up, I’ll remember everything.” He laid down and passed out.

Nooroo frowned. “I hope you don’t.” He left. Nooroo began searching the hospitals. He had to be careful not to get caught. Again, he was cursed by Gabriel to not betray him. Getting Gabriel to peacefully surrender was his only option, and this situation, as stressful as it was, provided him an option to do just that. It would take him longer to play it safe, but this would ensure the better option plays out.

Meanwhile, Gabriel woke up the next morning. He didn’t know it, but he too did a lot of Saturday. Sure, most of it was when he was powered up, but getting hit in the head like that really takes it out of you.

When he awoke he said “Boy that was a crazy dream.I must be more stressed about the wedding than I thou-... Oh. It’s real.” He contemplated what he heard previously. “If what that kwami thing said is true, and I don’t think he would lie to me, then Emilie and I are already married, and have been married for a while. I’m glad it’s been successful I guess, but I don’t know how.

Do we have any kids? What are they like? I’m sure they’re nothing short of extraordinary. I wonder if they like me. I know Emilie tells me not to worry. It’s just easier when she’s around. I kind of wish she was here.”

Suddenly, Gabriel had a terrible headache. It felt like he was trying to remember something, but couldn’t figure it out. “What was that?” he said after it calmed down. “That thing said she was in a hospital. Well, maybe they could help me sort this all out as well.”

Gabriel looked at the door. “Nooroo, was it, said I shouldn't leave without him. I’d have to agree. If the world really is further than I am, I’d look like a crazy person.”

Gabriel saw a small table and some paper. “Perhaps I could take the edge off by designing something. He walked over and sat down at the table.”Now let’s think. I know. Something for Emilie when she gets out! I mean, of course I’d design for Emilie. I’d design something for the kid or kids, but I don’t know what they look like, or even if there are any. I know Emilie wanted kids, so there has to be at least one. Anyways, I should get started.”

He began sketching, taking occasion breaks to rest and eat. He felt like himself for the first time since waking up in a foreign world. He joked to himself “You know, this might seem cutting edge from what I know, but I bet someone would call this retro.” He chuckled. “I would like to design something more extravagant, but I know Emilie, and she would want it to be simple. And considering that she would be getting out of the hospital, I feel like simple is better.”

A few hours later, Nooroo returned. “Oh good. You’re back. Take a look at this!” Gabriel said.

Nooroo played along and looked. He was actually impressed. “Wow,” he said. He shook himself. “Anyways, good news. I’ve found your wife.”

“Really?” Gabriel asked. “That’s wonderful.”

Nooroo had not seen Gabriel this cheerful. It was understandable, but it was still a shock to Nooroo. “Well, yes. I feel like it’s too late to try and visit her now. I think we should go first thing in the morning.”

“Good,” Gabriel said. “ Being cooped up in here hasn’t done me any favors.”

“Do you feel like you could handle it?” Nooroo asked.

“I believe so,” Gabriel said. “With a good night’s rest, I should be fine.”

“OK. Then we’ll head out in the morning” Nooroo said.

Gabriel smiled. “You know, you’ve been really helpful to me. When this is all said and done, I should find a way to thank you.”

Nooroo blushed. “Oh, you don’t have to do that.”

“I insist,” Gabriel said.

“Oh” Nooroo said. “Well, I guess I can’t stop you then.”

“Good night Nooroo,” Gabriel said.

Nooroo smiled. “Good night master.” Gabriel soon fell asleep. He’s going to remember eventually. Probably before this is all “said and done” too. I hope he remembers this. Still, it wouldn’t surprise me if he didn’t make good on his promise. Nooroo sighed and fell asleep next to Gabriel.

The pair woke up the next morning. “Darn it!” Gabriel said. “This is still real.”

“Well, it’ll be better once we get to your wife” Nooroo said.

“You’re right,” Gabriel said, petting Nooroo. “She always knows what to do.”

“We should get going,” Nooroo said. “We have to be careful to not stand out.”

“Agreed,” Gabriel said. “Our goal is to get to the hospital. I feel like that’s a safe place where everything can get settled.”

“Right,” Nooroo said nervously. “Let’s go.” Nooroo led Gabriel out of the mansion and into the streets of Paris. The two of them were careful to not draw too much attention to themselves and hid whenever things got a bit hairy. I think we’re going to actually do this!

Gongfu Brewing

Among internet tea people, gongfucha (功夫茶) is often represented as the best, most authentic method of brewing loose-leaf tea. New tea people tend to fetishize gongfu brewing and overemphasize its ritual. (On r/tea especially, posts asking about the gongfu “tea ceremony” are fairly common.) The more experienced you get, however, the more you start to think of gongfu as just one of many methods available to brew the best possible cup of tea. As a relative newcomer to gongfu tea, I’ve found it difficult to know what information is true and what can be safely ignored. To that end, I want to summarize the research on gongfu brewing and dispel some of the myths that I’ve encountered.

Gongfu is Old

Gongfucha (literally, “making tea with skill”) is often misrepresented as a traditional brewing style with ancient origins. In reality, however, the historical record suggests that gongfu brewing developed within the past 200 years.

There are two excellent academic sources on the history of gongfu brewing, both by Lawrence Zhang (2012, 2016). According to Zhang, contemporary gongfucha developed in 1970s Taiwan, though its origins are in an 18th century brewing style local to the Chaozhou region of China (bordering Fujian and Guangdong).

The earliest written mentions of gongfu brewing were by gastronome Yuan Mei in 1792 and bureaucrat Yu Jiao in 1801. Yuan, for example, described the practices of tea drinkers in the Wuyi Mountains who used (quoting Zhang) “pots that held no more than one ounce of water and drunk from cups no bigger than a walnut.” In 1937, translator Lin Yutang wrote that gongfu brewing was “an art generally unknown in North China” practiced only by “connoisseurs and not generally served among shopkeepers” (Lin 1940: 218). Zhang notes that prior to the 1960s, gongfu brewing was virtually unknown outside of Chaozhou.

In 1957, Weng Huidong wrote the “first dedicated treatise” on gongfu brewing, which, though never published, was meant to spread the local brewing style beyond southern China. Weng’s descriptions mirror what contemporary tea drinkers think of as gongfu brewing—high leaf to water ratios, whole-leaf tea brewed in small clay teapots, multiple quick infusions. Still, gongfu brewing was only a local custom and not well known (let alone practiced) outside of the Chaozhou region. Even as late as 1999, Chinese books on Chinese tea customs only mentioned gongfucha in passing. Again quoting Zhang (2016:55):

To the rest of China gongfucha was interesting, but no more so than any other regional tea culture; it was novel for its unique procedures and implements. There were many other traditions in China for tea drinking.

The misconception that gongfucha has ancient origins derives from two sources. First, Lin’s writings on gongfu brewing include references to traditional Chinese tea culture (and philosophy) in an attempt to “emphasize that [gongfucha] was a part of the canon of traditional Chinese cultural practices“ (Zhang 2016:54). Still today, gongfucha is incorrectly associated with early writings on Chinese tea, such as Lu Yu’s The Classic of Tea. More recently, the confusion can be attributed to the introduction of chayi (“tea arts”) and chayiguan (“tea art houses”) in 20th century Taiwan. Zhang writes that Taiwanese tea house owners claimed that “they were recovering a lost tradition by means of emphasizing the pureness of tea drinking as an activity” (2016:56). Moreover, in the 1980s, Taiwan used chayi to lay its political claims as the legitimate China and keeper of authentic Chinese traditions (see also Kim and Zhang 2012).

Since the 1990s, many have tried to locate gongfucha in an historical narrative of Chinese tea drinking, despite the evidence of its newness. Contemporary gongfu brewing is represented as an extension of past practices “with one dynasty’s tea practice seen as building on practices of previous dynasties and culminating in modern tea arts” (Zhang 2016:60). It is, as Zhang argues, an “invented tradition” (Hobsbawm and Ranger 1983).

Gongfu is Traditional

Similarly, gongfu brewing is often described as the traditional method of brewing tea in China. As noted above, this is not the case, with most tea in China being drunken either “grandpa style” or “western style,” using less leaf, more water, and longer infusions.* If anything, the history of gongfu brewing has proved that this brewing style is thoroughly not traditional:

Zhang (2016) points out that brewing with whole-leaf tea really only began in the Ming dynasty (1386-1644). Prior to then, in China tea would have been ground to a powder and whisked—like Japanese matcha—or “powdered and ground up, then boiled in water, with added fragrance such as spices and salt”—like Tibetan butter tea. In fact, the tea that Lu Yu described in The Classic of Tea would be unrecognizable to most tea drinkers today.

Moreover, as outlined above, contemporary gongfu brewing developed in 1970s Taiwan and was heavily influenced both by Japanese senchadō (“the way of steamed tea”) and Mainland tea culture (Kim and Zhang 2012; Zhang 2016). The development of gongfu brewing is a direct consequence of blending these various tea cultures. This fact, however, does not fit the mythology surrounding gongfucha, and is often left out of contemporary accounts. To this effect, Kim and Zhang (2012) write that:

Such omission is quite common among newer publications on tea, and reflects a growing sense that Chinese chayi, or as it is increasingly called, chadao, has always been in existence in China for over a thousand years. [...] Even Chinese works that discuss Chinese and Japanese transmission in tea culture tend to emphasize China as the source and Japan as the recipient and developer of tea knowledge, but rarely mention that the direction of transmission also occurred in reverse.

Ironically, those who practice gongfucha for its tradition (or aesthetics) are actually engaging a much younger practice; whereas an older, more authentic approach is to treat gongfu brewing simply as a means to an end.

* For western style, brew 5g tea/350ml water for 2-3 minutes in a mug or pot.

Gongfu is Complex

Calling gongfu brewing a “ceremony” has caused a lot of confusion among newer members of the tea community. Even Wikipedia gets it wrong. Often this misconception arises when people mistakenly equate gongfu brewing with Japanese chadō, which does have a ceremonial quality. Other times, I think it is simply the fetishization of Chinese tea culture.

This misconception has two parts, equipment and ceremony:

Though some gongfu enthusiasts do use large, complex tea sets—e.g., this one, which costs $300 and includes 40+ pieces—gongfu brewing can be done very simply. (See also MarshalN’s semi-sarcastic post on “essential teaware”.) For example, to brew gongfu at home for myself, I use only a gaiwan, a small mug, a tea towel, and a medium sized bowl for waste water. My tea set cost $20.

The “ceremony” of gongfu brewing need not be complicated either. While some people prefer to brew gongfu with large, flowing gestures and what appears to be significant difficulty, this is neither necessary nor particularly useful. Instead, it is best to brew quickly, carefully, and as efficiently as possible.

When I sit down for a solo gongfu session, I attempt to make the best tea that I can with as little fuss as possible. I start by preparing the table. I lay out a tea towel, on top of which goes a gaiwan, a small mug, and a bowl for waste water. The gaiwan holds 100ml of water and the mug holds about two infusions, so there is no need for a gongdaobei (“fairness pitcher”). I measure out my tea—using a gram scale—and heat my water—using a variable temperature electric kettle. I use water from the tap or, alternatively, from a filtered pitcher. Once all of my equipment is assembled, I start brewing.

Gongfu is Best

Lastly, it is a mistake to think that gongfu brewing will always be the best method of drinking a particular tea. In fact, for some teas, gongfu is a poor brewing method and returns substandard results. Imagine trying to gongfu a CTC-style Assam—chopped leaves will brew strong and bitter—or an Earl Grey—the first few infusions will taste heavily (almost chemically) of bergamot. On the other hand, some teas that I love to drink gongfu have fared poorly when I’ve tried brewing them western or grandpa style. Thus, if you only brew gongfu (or only western), you can end up with disappointing results. The trick is to match the tea with the right method, and then dial in on the specific parameters. For most tea people, figuring out how to brew our favorite teas is almost as important as sourcing those teas in the first place.

One trick that I use when selecting a brewing method is matching it with the “traditional” origin of the tea that I'm drinking. So, Chinese greens like Longjing (”Dragon well”) or Taiwanese oolongs tend to get brewed gongfu with a ceramic gaiwan or grandpa style in a tall glass. Alternatively, CTC teas from India or Sri Lanka and traditional English flavored teas will always get brewed western style in a mug or pot. I almost always brew Japanese style green teas in a kyusu, which is a whole other process. Consequently, the style of tea matters more than where the tea was actually produced. So, Indonesian oolongs made in traditional Chinese or Taiwanese styles will still be brewed gongfu or grandpa style. Likewise, if your Taiwanese oolong gets severely broken (or if you are down to only fannings), it will be better brewed western style.

They were aware I had a UK licence for 5 years and had no convictions, claims etc. I rang and spoke to a representative and she confirmed the quote. The quote then went up by 200 !!!! Hi, Me and my fiancee currently own and insure a Rover 25, V reg, 1.4 ltr, through Quinn. I'm the main driver and she's a named driver. We currently pay about 400 for tpf&t for the policy, and this has been roughly the price since we started the policy about 2 1/2 years ago. We're now looking at getting a second car as we will be working in different areas. My Grandma offered me her old Nissan Micra (1.3 ltr, K-reg) for us to have. I phoned up Quinn to get a quote for this car and they quoted 2,020!! I can't understand why it's so much more expensive, it's ridiculous! The lady I spoke to couldn't give me any adequate explanation of why it was so expensive, though she mentioned that we wouldn't be able to use a NCB on it as it would have to be an entirely new policy. But we took our first car policy with no NCB and that was a fraction of the price. Apparently the micra is called a Super-S or something, though it is not suped up or a fancy model or anything. Could that be it? We've tried a few other insurers and they also give expensive quotes (1000+) though not as ridiculous as Quinn. Any ideas why it would be so expensive? What could we change to try to make it cheaper? Change each car to have one named driver ony? Try a different car? Find a multicar insurer? My friends got an 02 Acura RSX 5 speed and he pays like $600/month and the car has some engine mods. We are both 17 except he has a couple tickets. I called 3 different insurance companies and they all quoted me around $750 a month. the car in question was a 76 Chevrolet Camaro with an automatic trans and 350ci v8 (though the vin would probably indicate a 267ci v8) why is the newer car cheaper to insure? with a manual trans? kids these days dont appreciate the old cars like I do and stick with Honda and Acuras and those are the ones I actually see getting wrecked. I wouldn't get full coverage on the old car because if it were to wreck i'd just get another as they aren't worth fixing and are a dime a dozen it's not really a rare classic car. I understand that engine size might be a factor. The rsx is lighter and has a smaller engine but the Camaro is much heavier with a bigger engine. Would a z28 cost more? (already upgraded to 350 and upgraded suspension from factory) I didn't ask the insurance on that. What about the Pontiac Firebird of the same years? (70's to '81) it shares a similar setup. The oldest victim so far was Louise De Kler, 98, one of eight elderly residents killed in the rec room at Pinelake Health and Rehab in Carthage, North Carolina, in 2009.

The nonpartisan Kaiser Family Foundation analysis of government data for 2018 Marketplace plans indicates premiums are rising significantly in many counties across the country, in part due to the decision of the Trump Administration to cease payments to insurers for cost-sharing reductions.

However, The Associated Press reported that in an odd twist, low-income people in about half of U.S. counties will now be able to get a taxpayer-subsidized "Obamacare" policy for free, as the new study suggests some actions by the administration against the health law could backfire.

The study found that in 1,540 counties a hypothetical 40-year-old making $25,000 a year can get a basic "bronze" plan under the ACA next year for zero monthly premium. It’s partly as a result of administration actions that raised the underlying cost of insurance, leading to higher federal spending for premium subsidies.

The final number of counties with available free plans is certain to be higher because the Kaiser study only examined the 39 states using the federal HealthCare.gov website for sign-ups. In those states, nearly 60 percent of counties will have free bronze plans. People will have to shop around to find the plan best for them.

This year consumers in some areas had access to zero-premium bronze plans, but for 2018 it will be many more people. Bronze plans are not for everybody, since they typically have annual deductibles of $6,000 or more, the AP reported. But they may appeal to younger people or those who expect to have just a few doctor visits over a year.

Separately, the government also released official numbers Monday. The Health and Human Services department said sticker-price premiums are going up 37 percent for a hypothetical young adult buying a type of midrange "silver" plan.

Congress is stuck in inertia on health care reform while the government is shutting off government subsidies to insurers providing lower copays and deductibles to people with modest incomes.

"When the 18 million Americans in the individual insurance market — those are Americans, shop keepers, songwriters, farmers — men and women who don’t get health insurance from the government or on the job — when they begin enrolling on Wednesday, they’ll discover something very strange. Some of these 18 million Americans will be able to get their insurance for free — they will pay absolutely nothing for their premium. But others, others will see their premiums skyrocket far beyond the increases they’ve seen in recent years. . Some people still worry that continuing the cost-sharing payments is the same thing as propping up Obamacare, those are the words we hear, or bailing out insurance companies. In fact, just the reverse is true."

Alexander asked what is causing this strange phenomenon. He pointed the finger at Congress for not funding cost sharing reduction subsidies, or "CSR," for the 2018 plan year.

Alexander put it in plain language: Failure to continue the cost sharing subsidies is going to hurt taxpayers and it’s going to hurt unsubsidized Americans who have no subsidy to help buy their insurance.

It’s up to Congress to act. Nobody’s going to bail them out of accepting their responsibilities — especially not voters.

The (Nashville) Tennessean reported last week the Mountain Home facility has received four out of five stars in the department’s latest quality ranking of the system’s 150 hospitals.

Administrators at those hospitals say they have made improvements in recent months, but the rankings show their work is far from over. Our advice to them is to sit down with officials at Mountain Home to learn what they are doing right in providing care to veterans.

My Brother's Keeper

(WARNING: this post will go a lot more in depth and will be a significantly more technical than others)

We continue our journey through the book of Genesis with part two of our study of Genesis 4 and the story popularly known as the story of Cain and Abel.

On my last post we discussed how God Accepted Abel and his offering but rejected Cain and his offering. Looking closely at the evidence found in the biblical text we were reminded that God values what is happening in the heart of the worshiper. Worship is about celebrating what God has done and does for us, and not about us giving God something He needs.

“If I were hungry, I would not tell you; For the world is Mine, and all its fullness. Will I eat the flesh of bulls, Or drink the blood of goats?

Psalm 50:12-13 (NKJV)

God does not need our offerings and sacrifices, but rather they should be a natural outpouring of what is in our hearts, of our love and appreciation for God. Worship should be about our hearts. Not an effort to earn favor before God but rather as a response, a free and loving response to what God has done for us.

Today we will look at more evidence of what the heart of Cain must have been like and we will reflect on some practical applications for our lives today. In the process we will also see God's mercy and patience towards an unrepentant sinner.

Let’s pick up the story with Genesis 4:5

Here we have Cain being very angry and we have an odd expression that his countenance fell. At this point, Cain has not done anything wrong, yet look at what happens on the next verse.

Why are you angry?

Genesis 4:6

God asks Cain a question. Once again, God initiates the dialogue, not because God needs information, but because He wants Cain to realize where he is and what he is about to do. God reaches out to Cain when there is still time to turn things around. God asks Cain questions to help Cain reflect on his situation. God knows why Cain’s countenance has fallen, God knows why Cain is angry, but He wants Cain to stop and think about the reasons for his anger.

Not only that, on verse 7 God tells Cain what he can do to right the situation.

God pretty much says, “Instead of being angry, just do the right thing.” This is not the first nor the last time God pleads with people to do what is right.

"Learn to do good; Seek justice, Rebuke the oppressor; Defend the fatherless, Plead for the widow." -- Isaiah 1:17 (NKJV) "Seek good and not evil, That you may live; So the Lord God of hosts will be with you, As you have spoken. " -- Amos 5:14 (NKJV)

“If you do well”

Imagine God talking to Cain and saying

Cain, if you do what you know you ought to do, you will be lifted, your countenance will be lifted up.

Genesis 4:7

Genesis 4:7 is so challenging to translate that Jewish tradition has counted it as one of the indeterminate verses, and some modern commentators have given up on discovering its meaning. (Mathews, Kenneth A. Genesis 1-11:26. Nashville Ten.: Broadman & Holman, 1996. Print. p269)

"If thou doest well, will not [thy countenance] look up [with confidence]? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door; and unto thee [shall be] his desire, and thou shalt rule over him." -- Genesis 4:7 Darby Translation

Many versions will translate "lifted up" as "accepted." That is not wrong, its just that the word used litrally means "lifted up." It could mean "accepted," but we miss the clear relation to the previous two verses that describe Cain as angry and having a fallen countenance.

If Cain does well, it will reverse the fallen countenance problem. His countenance will be lifted up.

This can mean a number of things.

Firstborn's Dignity

We have an idea of what it meant to be the firstborn from the blessing Ruben, the firstborn, receives from Jacob in Genesis 49:3. Based on this notion of the firstborn's dignity some say it is Cain's position as the eldest son, the inheritor, the firstborn that he loses when his face is downcast. Cain should be the head of the household after Adam dies. But when his countenance fell, he lost the ability to lead, to walk with his face held high. When the Bible says that God did not respect Cain and his offering and his countenance fell, it is understood he became unfit to lead the family.

How could Abel look up to Cain and follow him when God did not respect him?

Cain had lost his "firstborn’s dignity." It bothered Cain that God respected his younger brother, but not him.

"What Cain needs to understand that his salvation and preeminence a firstborn hinge entirely on God’s forgiveness and can in no way be achieved through his own upward achievement." -- Doukhan, Jacques. Genesis. Nampa, ID: Pacific Press Publishing Association, 2016. Print. p119

That was the easier portion of the verse to translate.

The following portion of the text is quite challenging.

"If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin lies at the door. And its desire is for you, but you should rule over it." -- Genesis 4:7 NKJV

Sin

So the word used for "sin" in many translations could also mean “sin offering” (Young's Literal Translation) referring to the atoning sin offering, the sacrificial animal, which provides forgiveness and salvation. (Leviticus 7:37; Ezekiel 40:39 )

Door

The word used for door, is also often used with reference to “the door of the tabernacle” where the sacrificial animal was to be brought for the sacrifice. (Leviticus 4:4)

This translation is valid in light of the context of this passage, Cain and Abel have recently offered sacrifices to God and Cain’s did not include a sin offering.

God is talking with Cain in hopes that he will change his heart.

You could then argue, "Sure, this sounds fine, but there is no tabernacle not for a long time until the Exodus." But we have already seen language that refers to the sacrificial system when Abel’s sacrifice is described with, words like “the firstborn of his flock and of their fat.” (Genesis 4:4)

Some scholars believe there is enough evidence in the Bible to believe that during this time sacrifices were offered at the entrance to the Garden of Eden, this is where the presence of God was and the tree of life. This would be similar to the Most Holy place in the earthly tabernacle where the presence of God was. (Doukhan, Jacques. Genesis. Nampa, ID: Pacific Association, 2016. Desire

"If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door. And unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shalt rule over him." -- Genesis 4:7 KJV

It’s desire (NKJV) or his desire (KJV) are possible translations.

This word for desire is tricky, it is only used 3 times in the Bible. Genesis 3:16, Genesis 4:7 and Songs of Solomon 7:10. The word for desire is used with reference to a human in both Genesis 3:16 and Songs of Solomon 7:10, so it is not a stretch to understand it as referring to a human being here as well.

"This translation, with the understanding that Abel is being referred to, is supported by the Septuagint and several ancient Jewish commentators."

So with these things in mind, here is a possible way of interpreting this text.

Cain, if you offer a burnt offering as well as a thank offering, will you not retain the firstborn’s dignity? But if you do not do well, a sin offering lies down at the door of the garden (place for sacrifices) for you to offer for your sin. As a result of you doing this Abel will respect you and follow you and you will lead him as the firstborn.

Now, I know some may want to accuse me of rough unnecessariness.

When this was explained to me in class (years ago) I mostly disregarded it and could not remember it until I began preparing this post. I know this seems way too complicated to be a valid interpretation. But consider the context. Worship and sacrifice and the condition of the heart of the worshiper.

The most difficult passage is now behind us. The remainder of the chapter is fairly straightforward.

Implications

But please allow me to take a brief detour to explain the implications of the interpretation we just discussed of Genesis 4:7 and its relationship to Genesis 3:16.

When we interpret Genesis 4:7 to be about Abel’s desire for Cain and for Cain to rule over him as the firstborn it has direct implications to how we interpret Genesis 3:16.

Genesis 3:16 is about the wife having desire for her husband and for him to rule over her.

If God is indeed telling Cain how he once again lift his countenance and regain his dignity and ability to lead his younger brother, this then provides us with a insight regarding leadership in the home. This would mean that Cain has a responsibility towards his younger brother. To do well and to lead him. Ruling in this case is closely connected “to the ethical duty of confronting evil and self ruling.” (Doukhan p121)

This would mean that the husband’s rule over his wife is not to be interpreted in the context of abuse and subordination, but rather as a responsibility for the husband to self-rule as well as spiritual responsibilities and blessings that come with fulfilling God’s plans for that function.

Cain was to do what is right, and be the example. To humble himself and offer a sin sacrifice and regain his dignity.

Cain's Turn to Talk

God finishes talking to Cain and now we expect Cain to reply to God. We expect Cain to obey or at least attempt to communicate with God. To ask for clarification if needed.

The issue was not that Cain didn’t understand. The problem was not that Cain was ignorant. The problem was Cain’s heart.

Instead of turning to God to follow his will Cain turns to his brother. Cain’s disinterest in obeying or communicating with God leads to the first religious crime.

I believe today the same thing still happens. The crimes of the zealous, are not committed because they are right. Religious intolerance and fanaticism originate in a failure to respond to God properly, they originate when people replace faith with human efforts to earn God’s pleasure. Cain killed his brother not because Abel had done something wrong, but because Cain was evil and refused to talk to God.

Where is Abel your brother?

God speaks to Cain again. God’s question echoes the question He asked Adam back in Genesis 3:9. Except instead of “Where are you?” God asks “Where is Abel your brother?”

Once again, God knows, but He is giving Cain an opportunity to reflect, repent, and confess.

Instead Cain lies,

“I don’t know.”

How often do we play dumb with God? How often do we behave as if we were unaware of the sins we committed? How often God speaks to our hearts and we try and act like we don't know what He is talking about?

Am I my brother's keeper?

Maybe Cain is blaming God, like Adam and Eve did. After all is God not the keeper of those who love Him?

But do we have any responsibility towards those around us?

‘When you reap the harvest of your land, you shall not wholly reap the corners of your field, nor shall you gather the gleanings of your harvest. And you shall not glean your vineyard, nor shall you gather every grape of your vineyard; you shall leave them for the poor and the stranger: I am the Lord your God.

‘You shall not steal, nor deal falsely, nor lie to one another. And you shall not swear by My name falsely, nor shall you profane the name of your God: I am the Lord.

‘You shall not cheat your neighbor, nor rob him. The wages of him who is hired shall not remain with you all night until morning. You shall not curse the deaf, nor put a stumbling block before the blind, but shall fear your God: I am the Lord.

‘You shall do no injustice in judgment. You shall not be partial to the poor, nor honor the person of the mighty. In righteousness you shall judge your neighbor. You shall not go about as a talebearer among your people; nor shall you take a stand against the life of your neighbor: I am the Lord.

‘You shall not hate your brother in your heart. You shall surely rebuke your neighbor, and not bear sin because of him. 18 You shall not take vengeance, nor bear any grudge against the children of your people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself: I am the Lord.

We have certain responsibilities towards our brothers and sisters, towards those around us.

Jesus also had something to say about us being our brother or sister’s keeper.

Matthew 25:34-40 (NKJV)

Then the King will say to those on His right hand, ‘Come, you blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world: for I was hungry and you gave Me food; I was thirsty and you gave Me drink; I was a stranger and you took Me in; I was naked and you clothed Me; I was sick and you visited Me; I was in prison and you came to Me.’

“Then the righteous will answer Him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry and feed You, or thirsty and give You drink? When did we see You a stranger and take You in, or naked and clothe You? Or when did we see You sick, or in prison, and come to You?’ And the King will answer and say to them, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me.’

What have you done?

God asks Cain one more question (Genesis 4:10), this one is verbatim what God asked Eve in Genesis 3:13. Each time God asks Cain the same questions He asked Adam and Eve it connects Cain’s sin to the sin of his parents. He sinned because of their sin. They opened the door to all kinds of sins.

God does not need Cain to provide Him with information. The blood of his innocent brother cries to God from the ground. (Genesis 4:10, Revelation 6:9-11)

Cain’s anger revealed his true attitude. His sin is worse than his parent’s sin in a way, because he killed his own brother. We notice this when God judges Cain. Just like we saw in chapter 3 when God first asked questions than gave the sentence we have God asking Cain questions and now God proclaims the sentence.

God speaks to Cain the way He spoke to the serpent in Genesis 3:14. Cain is cursed like the serpent was cursed. You can see that the seed is not very different from the parent.

"In this the children of God and the children of the devil are manifest: Whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor is he who does not love his brother. For this is the message that you heard from the beginning, that we should love one another, not as Cain who was of the wicked one and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his works were evil and his brother’s righteous." -- 1 John 3:10-12 (NKJV)

Freedom

Much like God instructed Cain in what he should do, God also makes clear to us that we are free to choose to follow Him but there consequences to rebelling against God.

"Behold, I set before you today a blessing and a curse: the blessing, if you obey the commandments of the Lord your God which I command you today; and the curse, if you do not obey the commandments of the Lord your God, but turn aside from the way which I command you today, to go after other gods which you have not known. " -- Deuteronomy 11:26-28 (NKJV)

The only one who can free us form the curse of the law is Jesus Christ, because He paid the ultimate penalty.

Cain was cursed from the earth. Where before he could work the ground and farm now he would have to be a wanderer. When Cain refused God he was doomed to wonder aimlessly, a vagabond in the world, away from God.

Cain never shows remorse, never asks for forgiveness. He does, however, complain that the punishment is too severe. (Genesis 4:13-14) His parents had been driven from the Garden of Eden (Genesis 3:24), Cain had been driven from the ground. Cain would be hidden from the face of God, because of his iniquities.

Surprisingly, at least for me as a reader, God hears Cain! Even though Cain is an unrepentant sinner, God listens to him. God does not change the sentence, but God does place a mark on Cain in order to protect him. (Genesis 4:15)

God’s grace really is something that goes far beyond human comprehension.

So what do we take away from this story?

Whenever we read a story in the Bible we should ask ourselves three questions.

What did we learn about God?

what did we learn about humanity?

How can I apply this to my life today?

God

God wants to save sinners.

God talks to Cain both before and after he sins.

God asks questions and gives directions.

God respects Cain’s freedom to choose his own path.

God notices the death of those who love Him and judges the guilty.

God judges Cain based on his actions.

God is gracious and does not kill Cain nor allow anyone to kill him, but rather gives him an opportunity to live and maybe one day change.

Humanity

Good and innocent people may die at the hands of evil people.

We have the freedom to choose our own path (we are allowed to be rebellious, but there are consequences)

Our actions demonstrate the condition of our hearts.

Application

I must use my freedom wisely, following the path God has for me.

God is willing to make His will known to me and will warn me before I sin.

When I, sin I have the opportunity to turn to God and receive forgiveness.

I am my brother’s keeper.

I cannot live my life selfishly.

Identifying the content of our hearts can be very tricky. Looking at this story, it seems to me that the clearest identifier of the state of Cain's heart was how he felt and acted towards his brother.

Takeaway

This study took me on an unexpected journey. I did not expect this post to be so long or to get so technical. I must admit I was amazed to notice how gracious God was with an unrepentant sinner like Cain. This gives me hope. God's grace truly is amazing and this is noticeable from the very beginning, not a later development as some Christians seems to believe.

Even though I had originally entitled this post "My Brother's Keeper" I now realize this story is more about God's desire to see a sinner repent and receive salvation than about how we treat each other. With that said however, how we treat our brother/sister is a clear indication of the condition of our heart. Our worship of God should encompass every aspect of our life and a big portion of that is how we treat those around us
