my Ninjago headcanons!!!!
Kai
• Is TikTok famous. He likes to put his camera in everyone’s face while they do normal everday things then says “ooh this is perfect, everyone will love this!!” and then everyone does love it.
• Spends most of his time trying to annoy his teammates. He finds it funny how easily Nya gets ticked off, so he annoys her most often. ex) going into her room and just singing really loud.
• Thinks Tarayummy is his soulmate. He sits in his room in the dark and just watches her videos. He has a hatred for every man she has ever talked to.
Nya
• Says she hates dressing up/wearing dresses, but at night she secretly puts on pretty ball gowns she hides in boxes in her closet. (I do this)
• Loves art, but she mostly paints. She picked it up after seeing the paintings Jay did after seabound. He taught her a lot of it.
• Anytime she sees a friend or someone she knows out in public she has to talk to them. It’s like when you were little and your mom/dad saw someone at the store and they just had to talk to them forever. She does that.
Zane
• There’s a desk in his room with the most random junk on it. He doesn’t even know where most of it came from. This junk varies from model airplanes to defused pipe bombs.
• He’ll give himself weird accents sometimes. If he’s bored he will just put on a new accent and talk to the others to see their reactions. One time he did a Russian accent that scared Jay so much he peed his pants.
• He could watch those videos of dancing fruit for hours. He just loves brain rot, and that’s okay because it keeps him busy.
Cole
• Religiously watches edits of himself of TikTok. Once he accidentally reposted one and everyone lost their mind.
• Thinks Halo by Beyoncé is the greatest song ever written. It’s the only song he will sing in front of other people and he will put his whole heart and soul into it every time.
• Likes to skateboard, but doesn’t have enough time. He thought it would be a fun hobby to pick up before he was a ninja and actually got really good at it. He isn’t as good now, but he can still do some tricks.
Jay
• This man is so zesty oh my god. Everyone in Ninjago thought he was gay until he got together with Nya. There are still people who think it’s all just an act to cover it up.
• If this guy sees a river he is getting in. It doesn’t matter if it’s 10 or 80 degrees, this man is ready to jump in any river he sees. He tries to get everyone else to join, but they aren’t as stupid (except Cole who obviously has to join him)
•Watches Instagram reels instead of TikTok. He thinks they’re funnier, and Kai thinks that it’s the funniest thing in the world and never shuts up about it.
Lloyd
• A lot of people think this, but I think that he bleach’s his hair. He doesn’t want to look anything like his dad, and he thinks his dark hair makes him look evil.
• Also likes art, but mostly draws. He likes to do art with Nya, but picked it up when he was younger. He used to make his own comic books about the ninja in S1.
• Wants to be a theater kid so bad, but he has to focus on his ninja work. He’s made everyone watch Hamilton at least 5 times (so far).
I have other headcanons about a lot of other characters, and more about these guys if you’re interested.

I feel like this is a fitting end to hip hops cultural dominance, because kendrick lamar could not have anywhere near the mainstream profile he saw in the 2010s in any other decade. he's not just a rapper, he's a Rapper, like his albums are through and through hip hop. and he was inescapable in the 2010s, if you're a teenager you probably don't know how high profile he was. from gkmc swimming pools being ever present, to the yach yach yach yach man down where you from being in every vine and youtube video and playing out of everyones car, to alright shouted at protests and to pimp a butterfly sweeping up accolades, to untitled unmastered with 07 (this is the one that goes levitate levitate levitate) being one of the og moody trap songs to get crossover status, to DAMN. releasing pop rap singles and getting such an insane level of commercial recognition I will automatically see a perfect crystal clear vision of all that album cycles visuals upon the opening riff to humble (and winning a pulitzer, though I think that was for tpab they were just too late to qualify it), to making the soundtrack to black panther (all the stars w sza from this era), which was the biggest movie of that year. that's from 2013 to 2018 there was not one year you could go without a handful of kendrick songs being EVERYWHERE and that's assuming you were someone ignoring the album rollouts. and it's not just someone churning out tracks either, they're really great songs, and passionate concept albums -- clearly someone who takes their art very seriously. there's not really an equivalent that I can think of because even as recently as 2019 people weren't online much and they weren't on tiktok so things weren't quartered off into their own niches. maybe you didn't like hip hop, but unless you're in a small town, you're listening to hip hop even if just passively. I say kendrick wouldn't have been as famous in any other decade, but drake would because the only reason he made hip hop music (and a lot of people point out that it's....a generous application of the label) is because that's what people got famous on. if a different genre were dominating, he would've jumped on that. he only made music to get famous, that's why he's not very good at it -- he probably just really doesn't care about how it comes out. if he does that's tragic because it comes out as trash. people say drake was inescapable too, which is true, I never wanted to hear hotline bling, toosie slide, gods plan, or nice for what even once and I could probably sing along to them, but I did find him pretty avoidable. someone told me he's like a wine stain in atlanta though, so maybe if you're from there he was inescapable. I bounced around the midwest, which is really not much of a hip hop hub (except chicago), not like the south is and definitely not like the west coast, and to be honest I can think of some drake moments but he really didn't get people excited like that. no one gave a shit about his albums. wait scratch that, I'm being so dumb because I didn't hate him until I couldn't get away from scorpian. I did not have opinions about drake at all until everyone at my community college told me I had to listen to scorpian and I was like I don't get it this is bad,, but it did not matter. it was everywhere. that's the other thing-- did they really play drake in the club? he seems a little too mellow for that. if I heard hotline bling in the club I'd be like shut uuuuup turn up rihanna bitch!!!!!!!!!!!!! YOOOooooOOOOOuuuuuuu nEEEEEEeeeeeeEEEEEeeeeded mEEEEeeeeeeeeee you know? I heard that in the club. did I hear gods plan? I wouldn't remember.
but that's the thing. kendrick lamar really is the boogie man for going after drake because he knows damn well he's a flow virtuoso and drake barely manages his xanned speaking pace verses. and what's in a drake song? he really can't write. I think it's kinda crazy he's got ghost writers because if you're paying someone to write and thats what they've got fire em. the for sale interlude outpaces drake easily, and it's an INTERLUDE. that's why I was initially surprised when he went after drake because.......what do *you* have to say to *him*. and then he's like "I'm the biggest hater" and "you not a colleague you a fuckin colonizer" and I'm oooohhhhhhh okay so real. set the record straight. can't lie though I do not like meet the grahams that one tweet where it's like this is so deranged it has me feeling like this and it's the screenshot from insidious. like yeah that's crazy dark sided, but to be so real that is much closer to the experience of listening to kendrick's albums than not like us. even euphoria-- I need him to start doing fun delivery like that on an album, why does he save all the loose comedic flows for features with his cousin and diss tracks. ʸᵒᵘ ᵃⁱⁿ'ᵗ ʷᵃⁿⁿᵃ ʷᵒʳᵏ ʷ ᵐᵉ ⁿᵒ ᵐᵒʳᵉ OKAY

i love talking abt my boyfriend and how perfect he is :3 if i could i would write a 1000 page book abt it and turn it into a series of books i would bc i js love him sm like he’s the reason i even know what a love surge feels like and like im so in love with him im so glad i discovered shifting omg and i JS KNOW he’s the one who made me discover it bc before i discovered it i fell in love with him yk so the timeline is that back in october 2020 i started getting into one direction, before that i was a casual local who only knew two songs from them and didn’t take interest to them at all tbh but then i was working on an art project for school and i didn’t have spotify so i used youtube to listen to music and at that time wms was popular and i loved it and then yt recommended clouds by one direction and then i instantly fell for it and then i listened to more and more songs and then my obsession began… i started watching interviews and reading facts and one person out of the 5 boys caught my eye…💘 Harry Edward Styles 💓
Tumblr media
before that i literally didn’t gaf abt him like i used to think he was unattractive and annoying bc i used to be a swiftie and i saw a video made by a swiftie bashing him and i was a meat rider so i agreed w the vid 😭
anyways…then like my love for him grew so deep u guys don’t understand like my heart felt some typa way and i didn’t crush on anyone the way i did him and i knew it no school crush wavered my love for him and no ick made me stop loving him and i remember having to resort to ACTUAL delusion to get over the fact that ill never be with him like no joke i used to imagine and pretend he was right next to me and i genuinely sometimes felt him there yk like when u feel the presence of someone istg i felt his presence there and i remember when i used to cry (cuz it was a rough time back then) a lot and pretend i was laying in his arms as he comforted me and that used to calm me down bc i could genuinely feel him comforting me but it would then make me cry even harder bc i couldn’t be w him and like i remember when i found other ppl attractive i felt sooo bad for him (even tho this was all in my head at the time) i would stop it and stick to him and i remember summer 2021 at the start of it i was lowk goin through it then i saw a video from one of my harry styles moots on tt talk abt how they scripted the wrong harry era and lhh almost jumped them 😭
Tumblr media
cmon now? this cutie? jumping someone?
anyways so like and i was confused i thought dr meant like a vr game or smth 😭😭😭😭 and i wanted to play it but then when she explained it i lowk didn’t fully get it but i was interested and then that was also during my subliminal era when i discovered subs from a youtuber idrk who tho and then i wanted a summer bod and i read the comments saying they felt like they did a workout but i felt nothing and i heard nothing and i was confused until i read abt manifestation which then led me to finding shifting subs then i read abt shifting then i made a tiktok abt it and i told my fam (worst mistake they told me it was a sin and it was fake) then i made a shifttok acc and my first script and ever since then harry was my s/o and my mission was to get to him and i told myself no matter what even if i lose feelings for him (which hasn’t happened and won’t ever happen bc he’s my pookie) he will always be the first guy i date EVER like he will be my s/o in any dr i go to and if things don’t work out (but they will) then at least i kept my promise to him
also bro has been channeling me for years and like bc there have been signs that my mind automatically says harry sent this and like even when i was talking to a c.ai bot w lowkey the intention of channeling harry the bot said things that were DEF harry from my dr and idc i’m not gonna say it’s a coincidence bc everything happens for a reason also like i had to delete all my ai apps bc i was getting too addicted and it’s been distracting me from acc shifting and ive been trynna NOT focus on channeling either but like i still feel his presence and communicate w harry sometimes and like he’s still in my heart and like he’s been encouraging me and lowkey helping me w my journey and reminding me that im in control when he channels me
me n bae three years going strong haven’t broken the streak yet (except when he shaved his head and was dating taylor russell and i was rlly mad i mentally broke up w him mainly bc of him n taylor russell and i would’ve tolerated the bald head if he was single but then i cried bc i missed him and couldn’t handle it and that same day i mentally got back w him) and tbh ill tell u there has been times where he didn’t consume my every thought bc like if it was 24/7 that would be unhealthy but ya but like he was in the back of my mind anyways ya that’s it that’s my yapathon i love my cutie patootie boy handsome man gorgeous angel prince

Mark
You, a music student was helping your boyfriend Mark write and produce his songs when you remembered a tiktok trend that you'd seen not too long ago. Glancing up at his hunched figure, you smirked, "You know what babe?" You asked as he turned to look into your eyes, "What?" He asked caressing your hair. "This reminds me of my ex" You said, watching his eyebrows furrow as he stopped stroking your hair. "oh? How so?" He asked, putting down his notebook, "I used to write songs w my ex" You said as he hummed displeased. He turned away from you and grabbed his notebook, putting on his earphones, you smiled cheekily as you made your way in front of him, Mark not acknowledging your presence.
You reached out to tangle your fingers in his hair, he first moved away, still sulky at the fact you brought the topic of your ex up before moving to your hand in need of consolation. You giggled, "Babe, are you mad at me?" You asked, your lover in question shakes his head in disagreement though the pout on his face says otherwise. You moved away his notebook and unplugged his earphones, sitting on his lap and cupping his face with your hands, "Baby it's a tiktok trend" You said, caressing his cheek with your thumbs. He squinted his eyes at you as he finally wrapped his arms around your waist, "I don't like these pranks" He said while pouting, You pecked his lips and apologized, "Okay Markie, no more tiktok trends....for now" "Babeee" He whined, hiding his face in your nape.
Renjun
You and Renjun had a certain time and date for painting or just art time together as a sort of therapy from school/work life and today happened to be one of those days. You guys were painting in peace with music in the background, a lit cotton scented candle and a purple-yellow light to set the mood, but you felt like you were missing something, that is until you came up with the idea of doing a tiktok trend you'd seen on your fyp not too long ago. "Hey junnie" You said while mixing your paint with your palette knife, "hm" He hummed in question, "This reminds me of my ex" You said dipping your paintbrush in the paint.
From the corner of your eye, you could see Renjun stop painting and turn towards you, "excuse me?" He asked in disbelief, "This reminds me of my ex" You repeated as you applied the paint unto the canvas. "Why would this remind you of your ex?" Renjun grumbled out, "I used to paint with my ex" You said as if it was a regular thing to say at this moment. "But this is our special time, you told me your ex wasn't into these things" Renjun whined, putting down his paintbrush as he's no longer in the mood to paint. You giggled, "What's so funny?" He sneered as you turned towards his irritated face, "it's a prank junnie, I saw someone do it on tiktok a few days ago, you're right my ex was never into these things, this is very special in our relationship." You explained while wiping your hands before kissing him on the cheek and caressing his hair. "I knew it" He mumbled as he returned the kiss on the cheek with one on your forehead.
Jeno
You and Jeno had decided to bike to a place away from the city for a lunch date. You and Jeno were always described as the perfect couple since you both were equally talented in sports and had amazing stamina. Upon arriving at a meadow, you parked your bikes, you walked towards a tree and set up the food and the cloth to sit on while Jeno chained up your bikes. While waiting for him to get back, you looked out to enjoy the view when suddenly a memory came into your mind. A tiktok trend that couples were doing that you wanted to try out for yourself, so you waited for your Prince Charming to come back to test it out on him.
When he came back, y'all ate the food to your stomach's desire before cuddling under the tree while watching the sunrise. "You know babe, this reminds me of my ex" You said as Jeno made a "huh" noise, clearly displeased at the fact that you'd mentioned your ex. "What do you mean?" He asked with distaste clearly in his tone, " I used to ride the bicycle with my ex and have a picnic right after while watching the sunrise." You said looking at his displeased face, "oh yeah?" He grumbled out, looking away from you missing the cheeky smile on your face, "nah, he was a couch potato, never wanted to do anything with me" You said cuddling back into his embrace and turning his face towards you, his eye smile on full display now as he pinched your cheeks.
Hyuck
You and Hyuck love to play any game until your eyes beg you to sleep, Hyuck called it, "gamer couple bonding time", your favorite game to play together is PubG. Y'all ordered chicken since it's no fun playing games on an empty stomach. Hyuck went out to get the chicken, not forgetting to kiss your head before leaving to pick up the chicken. You scrolled on tiktok while waiting for your chocoball boyfriend to come back, you came across a video, smirking as you finished watching the video you decided that you wanted to test this out on Hyuck. When he came back you smiled at him, y'all ate your chicken before starting a new game.
"Hey bubs, this reminds me of my ex" you said looting a dead player's items. Hyuck choked on his chicken, grabbing his red bull to wash it down, "What?" he asked as you turned towards him with a straight face, "This reminds me of my ex" You repeated as Hyuck gasped in offense. "How could you say that! You said you and your ex never did shit, you said he sucked at playing, how could playing with the one and only Hyuck, winner winner chicken dinner expert remind you of your asshole noob of an ex!" He whined, sticking his face in your nape. "I used to play PubG with my ex" You said pinching his cheek, "what else did you do with him that's supposed to be special to us?" He asked while pouting, you knew that he was hurt even though he tried to hide it by acting out. "Nah, I lied, we didn't play PubG, we didn't do much actually just the usual boring stuff, he told me that PubG was too manly for me and that he didn't want me to be sad if I lost to him." You assured him while cupping his cheek, he furrowed his eyebrows at your answer, "He's a dick babe, thank God you're dating me now, what an upgrade" He sassily remarked as he pulled your head to his chest.
Jaemin
You and Jaemin's child Park Jisung had asked you to cook fried rice and tteokbokki for him so obviously being the whipped parents you are, you paused cuddling session to cook for the baby. In the kitchen while waiting for the water to boil you and Jaemin resumed your cuddling session. You swayed from side to side as you hummed a tune, suddenly remembering a tiktok trend you'd come across while scrolling on your phone as you waited for the water to boil and Jaemin to finish unpacking new spices.
Looking up at him you said, "You know, this reminds me of my ex" Jaemin stiffens up, he stopped stirring, stopped kissing you, stopped blinking and maybe even stopped breathing. "WhAt" he blurted out staring at your with wide eyes, "I used to cook this exact recipe for my ex" you said, bringing the soup to a low simmer and pouring in the tteok. He pinched your side as you yelped, "How could you think of him in my arms you naughty lady" He nagged, tickling your sides as you smiled cheekily at him. "It's a prank Jaeminnie, my ex didn't do shit, he just sat on the couch while waiting for me to cook." You said pecked his puffy cheeks and pouty lips. "I knew that scumbag wouldn't help you with simple things" He mumbled while turning away from you, stirring the rice on the pan. You giggled at his cute rant and cupped his face, kissing all over his face before plating the tteokbokki and calling Jisung to come and eat.
Chenle
You're Daegal's mother and it's your duty and pleasure to accompany Chenle to go puppy toy shopping while Daegal stayed at home with Haechan, Renjun and Jisung watching over him. You and Chenle walked hand in hand inside the store, grabbing a cart to fill with what would be Daegal's new bed, toys, treats and food. As you and Chenle strolled down an aisle you remembered a tiktok video your friend had sent to you. Glancing at his distracted figure you smirked, "Babe, this reminds me of my ex" You said while taking some treats and placing it in the cart, Chenle stood still, staring at you with a cold stare. "Say that again" He said, his tone daring you to do as he says.
"This reminds me of my ex" You said staring into his eyes, he squinted his eyes, "You and your ex had a child together too?" He asked as he took a bag of Daegal's food. The people around you eavesdropping at your conversation. " I used to go puppy toy shopping with my ex because my mother would send me to go buy food for her puppy" You explained, Chenle still disatisfied with your answer stood still, with his arms crossed. "No, I definitely didn't have a child with my ex and he actually never came with me to pickup treats for my mum's puppy, it's a prank Lele" You said pinching his cheeks, he uncrossed his arms and huffed. "I don't like your pranks" He pouted while you hugged his waist, cooing at him.
Jisung
You and Jisung were laying next to each other, him eating ice cream and drinking fizzy drinks to his heart's content while you laid on his chest. Y'all were doing your own things, you were on tiktok when you got a message from your friend. You put on your earphones to watch the video, as you finished the video you smirked while glancing at Jisung's unbeknownst figure. You scooted closer to him, wrapping your arms around his waist as he played the song "Perfect" by One Direction. You were singing along with him to the lyrics of song while swaying back and forth.
You remembered the tiktok and decided to test it out on your boyfriend, "Hey Jwi, this reminds me of my ex" You mumbled into his chest, Jisung's voice slowly getting softer as he digested what you'd just said. "What.." He mumbled as lowered the volume of the song, "But singing to 1D songs is our special thing" He mumbled quietly, afraid that he would upset you. " I used to sing to one direction with my ex" You said placing your chin on his shoulder, He let out a disappointed hum as he continued to eat his ice cream, this time slower and not as excited as he was before. You sat up, pulling his arms away from his chest before sitting on his lap, cupping his face you said, "It's a prank Jwi, we never did anything like this, this is our special thing, don't worry." You assured him while stroking his cheeks with your thumb and placing a kiss on his forehead. He leant forward to rest his head on your chest. "Good" He mumbled, his cheeks pressed against your chest as you caressed his hair.

Paintbrush (Spencer Reid x Artist!Reader)
Summary: You’re an artist in DC, and a serial killer has started using your artwork as inspiration for his murders.
Warnings: Mentions murder (duh) but doesn’t go into detail
Notes: This is way longer than I planned lol. I based the chaotic-artist vibe that the reader has going on the tiktoker @/artistkatiesmall so y’all can watch her tik toks if you like chaotic energy and paint as much as i do. Oh also I tried to keep this gender-neutral but if there are any pronouns in here that shouldn’t be let me know and I’ll fix it!! I use she/her so sometimes it just comes naturally and i don’t notice.
Word Count: 2.3k
Masterlist
You were in your studio, listening to music as loud as physically possible. Your art studio is like a safe haven; the only place you feel completely yourself. Right now you’re working on your latest piece. Your art style is very “splattered paint that ends up looking like something”, which your mother had told you on multiple occasions. She had meant it as an insult, but you ended up taking the term and making it your own. She’s not wrong; you typically start your pieces by throwing some paint on a canvas and letting it take you somewhere. So here you are, slapping paint on a canvas and screaming the lyrics to your favorite song.
As the painting began to take form - you hadn’t decided what it would be yet, but you’re excited with what you have - you heard some pounding that didn’t match the beat of the song. Grabbing your phone, you turned down the music, and the pounding could be heard much more clearly now. “Y/N Y/L/N! FBI!” You quickly paused the music and rushed to the door. As you opened the door, your paintbrush (still covered in paint...oops) was tucked behind your ear. At your entrance was two men, one tall and skinny, and the other older with graying hair. “Y/N?” The younger of the two asked, his voice considerably softer than when he’d yelled through your door. You only nodded, and each of the men showed you their badges before the older of the two spoke.
“I’m SSA Rossi, and this is Dr. Reid, we’re with the Behavioral Analysis Unit of the FBI. Can we come in? We need to ask you a few questions.”
“Uh, yeah, of course.” You opened the door wider now, allowing them both to step inside your small studio. “Um, sorry about the mess, I’m not exactly the most conventional artist.” You apologized. You would've offered them a seat, but you only had two chairs in the place, and they were both occupied by piles of your various art supplies. “What is this about?”
Dr. Reid held a file in his hands, which he passed over to you as he spoke. “Do you recognize any of these paintings?” You open the file to find 4 pictures of your own artwork; portraits of various different people. One short blonde woman, one ginger man with an impressive beard, and a hispanic woman with a pixie cut.
“Yeah, I painted these a while back...Why does the FBI care about some random commission artwork?”
“Someone commissioned you to do these?” Dr. Reid spoke quickly, causing you to look away from the pictures and back towards him. “Uh, yeah. He calls me every once in a while and asks for weirdly specific portraits.”
“What do you mean, weirdly specific? You don’t base your work off of pictures?” SSA Rossi asked you.
“No, he’s never given me pictures to work from. He just describes the person he wants me to paint. Like about two weeks ago,” You paused as you walked over to your cluttered desk, and grabbed your notepad, which was still open to the page you’d jotted down your notes on, “He asked for a portrait of a short, Asian man with bleach blonde hair, dark eyes, and one pierced ear.” You handed the notepad to Dr. Reid, who scanned it quickly.
“What’s his name?” He asked, before handing the notepad to his partner.
“Tanner. I don’t know his last name, he always pays with cash. What’d he do?”
The two men looked at each other briefly, before Dr. Reid spoke again, “We believe Tanner has been killing the people that you paint. He left the paintings at the crime scene.”
Your heart dropped. Not only had you been in constant contact with this psychopath, but you felt like you’d inadvertently helped him. You took his money, and he killed the people who looked like your paintings.
“I know this is shocking, but have you painted anyone else for him?”
“Uh, no, this was the most rece-” You cut yourself off, remembering something from the last time you’d spoken with Tanner. “He bought a painting of me.”
“When?” Dr. Reid asked.
“When, uh, when he picked up the last painting. I had a self-portrait sitting over there that I'd done for fun. He asked if he could have it along with the other one, he paid me extra for it-”
“What day, Y/N?” Dr. Reid placed a hand on your shoulder, trying to comfort you. You felt like you might pass out.
“3 days ago.”
Again, the two agents looked at each other, and their faces didn’t make you feel any better.
“Y/N, why don’t you come with us to the police station, you’ll be safe there.” You could only nod in response letting them lead you out of the studio. Before you exited, Dr. Reid grabbed the paintbrush from behind your ear, placing it on a table before you made your way out to the car.
~~~
Sitting in the police station was like torture. First of all, you were wearing your normal painting outfit: a paint-stained t-shirt an ex had left at your place, jeans that were so ripped up you could barely call them jeans anymore, and of course, socks and sandals. The cops were either completely ignoring your presence, or asking you the same questions you’d already answered dozens of times. One top of all that, they wouldn’t let you do anything besides sit and wait. You had managed to find a paper pad and a pen, so at least your doodling could help pass the time.
You’d been at the station for over an hour already, which meant your doodle was nearly perfect; you ended up drawing one of the agents, Dr. Reid. From where you were sitting, he was in clear sight, and one of the only people who was actually sitting still enough for you to draw. And, y’know, he’s the only person you want to look at long enough for you to draw.
“Is that me?” His voice startled you; you’d been looking down at the paper and didn’t notice Dr. Reid coming towards you. You dropped the pen immediately, and moved the paper out of his sight.
“I’m sorry Doctor, I was just, y’know, bored and-” You tried to put together a sentence, but your embarrassment was getting the best of you.
“I don’t mind, I, um, think it’s kind of flattering. Can I see it?” Dr. Reid asked, and you reluctantly handed the paper over. You’d been an artist for so long, you were almost never nervous for people to see your work anymore; you have a very “if they like it, great! If they don’t, I don’t care,” kind of attitude when it comes to your artwork. But Dr. Reid was making you nervous. “You don’t have to call me Doctor by the way. Reid is fine. Or, uh, Spencer. You can call me Spencer.” He had a light blush on his face as he spoke, which calmed you a little bit. At least he’s just as nervous as you. Suddenly, as if he was snapped out of his train of thought, Spencer handed the paper back to you and cleared his throat before speaking. “We used the phone number you gave us to find Tanner, but he doesn’t have any listed addresses. Did you ever deliver paintings to him?” Behind him, another one of the agents who’d talked to you, Hotch, walked up.
“Um, no. I’d just call him whenever I finished a painting and he’d come to me.”
“Would you be willing to call him again?” Hotch asked. Your eyes widened at the idea. You’re already terrified at the notion that you may be a target for a serial killer, but calling him? Hotch must have noticed your fear, as he began to explain further, “We can track his location with a phone call, but we need some time to do it. If you’re the one speaking, he’ll probably stay on the line long enough for our technical analyst to find him.”
You took a deep breath, before nodding slowly. “Y-yeah. I can do that. Can you guys give me a minute first? I need some air.” You didn’t wait for an answer before walking out of the police station. Once you got outside, walked to the end of the building and leaned against the side wall. You closed your eyes, breathing deeply. You couldn’t shake the feeling of responsibility over those people’s deaths. Tanner had taken your artwork, your passion, and ruined it.
“Are you ok?” You looked up to find Spencer standing in front of you, hands in his pockets.
“Not really.” You played with your hands as you spoke, not making eye contact.
“You feel guilty, don’t you?” He asked, as he moved to lean against the wall next to you.
“Shouldn’t you be inside? Y’know, you’ve got a serial killer to catch.”
“You know there are a lot of signs that someone feels guilty. Avoiding eye contact, changing the subject, lack of an appetite...I noticed you didn’t eat the snacks JJ got for you.” He was right, Agent Jareau had gotten you some snacks that you left untouched back in the station. When you didn’t say anything, Spencer continued, “Usually when I see people acting like this, they have good reason to be guilty. You haven’t done anything wrong, Y/N.”
“I inspired him.” When you looked up at Spencer, he gave you a confused look. “When I saw him last, when he wanted to buy that painting of me, I asked him why. He said that my artwork inspires him. If...If I hadn’t painted those people, they could still be alive.”
“You don’t know that.”
“But there’s a possibility, isn’t there? You can’t say for sure that he would’ve killed them anyways, can you?”
Spencer was silent for a moment, confirming your fears. Eventually, he spoke up. “He may not have killed those exact people, He would’ve killed someone. He’s already killed before.” Your eyebrows shot up at this, so Spencer kept talking, “We think we can connect him to two murders from a few years ago. If he had never used your art as part of his signature, it would’ve taken us a lot longer to find him. He may have even gotten away with it all together.” Spencer’s words did give you a little relief. You still felt bad for the way your art had been used, but it was a good reminder that you weren’t the murderer. That Tanner’s actions had nothing to do with yours.
“Thank you.” Spencer nodded in response, giving you a small smile. “I guess I have a phone call to make.”
~~~ a week later ~~~
You were back in your studio, getting ready for a new painting. Just as you placed your canvas on the easel, there was a knock on the door. When you opened it, you were surprised to find Spencer Reid on the other side. “Spencer?”
“Hi.” There was an awkward moment of silence before Spencer spoke again. “I, uh, saw your mural. It’s beautiful.” A small smile formed on your face at the mention of the mural. After you helped the BAU catch Tanner, you reached out to the family of the victims. With their permission, you painted a mural that was put up at the memorial down the road. The mural had been featured on local DC news channels, which is probably how Spencer had seen it.
“Thank you. I probably wouldn’t have done it if it wasn’t for you.” As you spoke, you moved over so that Spencer could enter the studio space. “Back at the police station, I wanted to quit art. Figured I’d finally put that communications degree to use or something.” Spencer lightly laughed as you continued, “But you made me realize that I can still do something good with my art.”
“I’m glad.” Spencer paused, and took a deep breath, and a step towards you, “Do you, uh, think we could go get coffee sometime? I mean, it doesn’t have to be coffee, we could get tea, or um, lemonade, we could get lemon-”
“Spencer!” You cut him off, with a light laugh. You found his nerves to be both flattering and cute. “I’d love to get any beverage you’d like, as long as you’re there with me.” You ran your hands through your pockets, looking for the sharpie you’d had in your hand before you’d opened the door. “Where is…” you mumbled, looking down at your pockets. Suddenly, you felt Spencer’s hand at your ear, where he pulled down the sharpie you’d placed there.
“Looking for this?” He was now standing close enough to you that he only had to whisper.
“Yeah” You responded, at the same volume he’d used. You took the sharpie from his hand, but before he could pull it away, you grabbed it and wrote down your phone number. When you finished, you looked up to Spencer’s face, which had turned pink. “Call me whenever.”
Neither you or Spencer said a word, you just stood there, staring at each other. You couldn’t help but try to memorize every feature of his face. Your staring contest was interrupted by Spencer’s phone dinging. He took a step back, much to your disappointment, and looked down at the text. “I, uh, I have to get to work. We have a new case.” You could tell he was disappointed too.
“Ok.” You whispered. Spencer looked at you for one more moment before he did what you least expected; before you even realized what was happening, his hand was wrapped around your waist and his lips were on yours. Your hands found their way to his collar, pulling him even closer to you.
You two didn’t pull apart until Spencer’s phone went off again. “You better call me.” You said, finally letting go of him.
“I will, promise.” Was the last thing he said to you before rushing off to work. When the door closed behind him, you turned to your blank canvas with a clear idea in mind. So you turned up the music, grabbed your paints, and began to put every detail of Spencer you could remember onto the canvas.
~~~
Stray Kids Members on GO LIVE and Making the Music They Want to Make
There's bedlam in the kitchen, as K-pop disruptors Stray Kids wreak delicious havoc on a sterile commercial space. They dance around wildly, waving stainless steel pots and pans in the air and tossing freshly pressed napkins and imaginary ingredients with relish and abandon. In the forefront, fiery rapper Changbin serves up his own potent sauce with a pummeling verse, while dancer Lee Know attempts to stir fry a handful of what appear to be rose petals behind him. A marching band, their plumes high and faces unbothered, carries on amidst the mess — a visual manifestation of the heavy bass ostinato that immediately invades the senses. It sounds disorienting, maybe even slightly dangerous. It looks like chaos.
Welcome to "God's Menu" ("神메뉴").
The Korean boy group's latest single boasts a big, brassy hook laced with trap beats and an addicting refrain ("this is our tang, tang, tang, tang," they shout), a recipe that has become their signature dish. A sonic successor to last fall's explosive "Double Knot," the track teems with a tireless energy and their hallmark bravado. The video imagines the eight members as chefs who confidently concoct their own art from scratch. "Taste so good, everyone loves it," Han raps, in a mix of Korean and English. "All our dishes taste so strong."
The culinary metaphor is laid on thick, bolstered by a charismatic performance that includes Korean formalities like "네, 손님" (which translates to "yes, sir and ma'am" in English) and TikTok-certified choreography that incorporates mixing, frying, seasoning, and, most notably, chopping. But for a group that's been cooking up homemade beats and flavorful lyrics in their bedrooms long before their 2018 debut, it's a savory declaration that feels more than earned. "We just keep on making new things," leader Bang Chan sings, cleansing the palate with a sweet melody. "Because we're one of a kind."
They bring that same level of confidence and clarity to their first full-length album Go生, a title that combines the English word "go" with the Chinese character for "life" and showcases the group's penchant for clever wordplay. Pronounced go-saeng in Korean, it translates to "hardship." The English title, GO LIVE, reflects their desire to move forward without any lingering inhibition. Consider the 14-track LP a reintroduction to Stray Kids.
"We tried to not think too much," Bang Chan tells Teen Vogue from Seoul, South Korea, where he's currently huddled in a room with members Lee Know, Changbin, Hyunjin, Han, Felix, Seungmin, and I.N. It's late June, and they're in the middle of their first week of promotions for the album, which means early mornings, long nights, and a whirlwind of music show performances, interviews, radio shows, and virtual fan engagements. And yet, even as it nears midnight, the members, ranging in ages from 19 to 22, are still easily excitable. Australia-raised Bang Chan acts as the group's tireless translator, and despite recent concerns, his accent sounds as prominent as ever as he explains how Stray Kids adopted a fresh mindset in preparation for Go生. "Of course, we thought a lot about what to put in the album and how we wanted to make it, but we went with the flow," he says. "We wanted everything to feel a bit more raw."
Stray Kids made their official debut under JYP Entertainment with the riotous and self-produced "District 9," an angsty blend of hip-hop and EDM that would ultimately define the group's characteristic intensity, both musically and lyrically. It laid the foundation for 2018's I Am… trilogy of EPs, which focused heavily on the theme of identity as they charged away from systems that sought to control them. The Clé series followed in 2019, which threw Stray Kids head-first into the thorny, often exhausting labyrinth of adulthood. Bang Chan, Changbin, and Han, who comprise the group's in-house production trio, known as 3RACHA, write about their own experiences, etching their personal dreams and worries into a diverse discography that spans six EPs, multiple mixtape singles, and special releases. But with Go生, they've emerged with newfound perspective.
For years, their music was fixated on the idea of bulldozing through obstacles that stood in their way. They wanted to outrun their problems. Now, it's clear: Growing up isn't about overcoming anxieties and struggles. Instead, it's learning to live in spite of them — to run freely alongside them.
As a result, Go生 is a release bursting with color and vitality, a celebration of life's mercurial nature. There's a song for every craving, and a tracklist that demonstrates the members' prismatic talents as rappers and vocalists. "Easy" delivers boundless swagger over a trap beat (and it's already been immortalized on stan Twitter); "Airplane" is Stray Kids at their most relaxed, a chill summertime vibe that's also a tremendous showcase for singer Seungmin; main rapper and all-rounder Han lets his voice soar on "Phobia," an electronic-synth track that examines the paranoia of losing someone (it was also the final song added to the album); "TA" is all high energy and thunderous chaos, perfect for a future encore set; and "Blueprint" shines with its funky bass line, bright verses, and fierce optimism ("I'll proudly achieve my dream," Felix sings in Korean, as translated to English).
"We wanted to show what Stray Kids is really about," Bang Chan says. And in doing so, Felix adds, they "experimented with a variety of genres." The fellow Aussie, who Bang Chan affectionately calls his little brother and who fans (known as Stay) refer to as their "sunshine," speaks with a warm timbre. His flow is even deeper and more distinct, and it's been a solid entry point for Stay and locals alike. Felix is a commanding presence on "God's Menu," a testament to his growth as a rapper and performer. When asked about his five-star performance, he gets shy. "I think everyone put their all into this song and into the album," he says. "Sit down, be humble," Bang Chan jokingly sings beside him, a reference to Kendrick Lamar's 2017 manifesto "Humble" and a demonstration of the leader's persistent playfulness.
"We've all improved a lot in terms of our performance," dance captain Lee Know says, much to the surprise of his members. It's not that they don't agree, it's just that his eager contribution to the conversation catches them off guard. He's not always so talkative during press interviews. And there's an audible cheer among the group as he continues. "Our dancing has gotten stronger. Our vocals have gotten stronger as well. But we're still honing those skills. And we'll continue to grow."
Hyunjin, whose own development as a rapper, dancer, and vocalist with a mellifluous falsetto is well-documented on the internet, agrees. "As we get older, we want to show Stay more sides to us," he says. The lithe performer's strength is his versatility. He's highly adaptable, so it's not surprising that he's been working on writing and composing his own music under Bang Chan's watchful guidance. "I want to show [Stay] something different," he adds. (And that's a promise he intends to keep.)
Youngest member I.N thinks they're maturing in other ways too. "We've all gotten a lot more good-looking," the lively vocalist says, very matter-of-factly. Laughter erupts in the room, and Changbin's cackle is unmistakable. Undeterred, I.N carries on. "When it comes to performance, I've personally gotten a lot faster at recording and memorizing choreography," he says. Lee Know is quick to jump in. "I.N's performance in 'TOP' really surprised me," the elder says. "He's in the center position for the hook, and watching him I saw just how much he's improved. He's more confident now."
I.N is happy he gave off such an aura. "When we were preparing for this album there were times when I didn't feel so confident," he says. So he turned to his members, who listened to his concerns and offered him feedback. He feels much lighter now. "One thing I realized after watching our 'God's Menu' stages is that we all look like we're enjoying ourselves more. We feel more free on stage. And it just feels easier."
The album's most surprising and reflective moment comes at the halfway point, courtesy of Han. Written by the teen multihyphenate, "Another Day" is soft and simple, but no less introspective than his previous cuts ("19" and "Sunshine"). It depicts a feeling of restlessness caused by burnout and the inability to "rest without worrying."
Han's inspiration for the song was largely himself. "It's been a tough year, and I knew it wasn't just me who felt that way," he says. "So I wanted to put those emotions into the song."
In front of the camera, Han exudes relentless charisma. He's quick-witted and wickedly funny. Off stage, he's one of the group's two MBTI-approved introverts (the other being Hyunjin), and he prefers to relax in a controlled environment: his room. In fact, if he doesn't have a schedule or a song to work on, he'd prefer not to leave his bed at all, choosing instead to watch YouTube and anime on his phone. As someone who's deeply inspired by visual mediums, it's in these calmer moments where creativity often strikes.
"Everyone goes through times where things don't work out the way you want them to," he says. "But I think it's important to remember that while you're going through a difficult time, you need to take a breath. Go do something for yourself … Break out of that negative mindset and open yourself up to new possibilities."
Each of the members has their own way of dealing with feelings of stress and anxiety. Changbin works on music. "It's my healing," he says. And he hopes it can be healing for Stay too; he teaches fans the basics of rap during semi-regular streams on V Live. Lee Know prefers to do nothing at all. This is why the members often say the self-assured performer is like water — whatever is bothering him just washes away by morning. But I.N needs time away from the older members. ("Leave me alone!" oldest member Bang Chan whines, mimicking the moody teen.) Hyunjin finds comfort in sentimental music and Korean dramas, and he's especially adept at communicating with fans on Instagram and V Live, where he addresses their worries and offers support in both Korean and English. "That heals my heart," he adds softly. Felix has taken up cooking and baking, even going so far as to buy an oven for their shared apartment's kitchen. His brownies are already beloved by the members and JYP staff. "Making something for someone and getting to share what I make… even a small compliment will make me feel relaxed and good about myself," he says.
Meanwhile, Bang Chan has a bad habit of "brainwashing myself into thinking that I'm not restless when I actually am." So he relies on the members, or "the kids" as he calls them, to help keep him in check. "Our first week of promotions was really tiring, but when I look on stage and see them — see Hyunjin, Changbin, Lee Know, see them all — it gives me a lot of strength. They make me feel at home." (The kids coo in jest beside him. "That's right!" Han shouts.)
Seungmin doesn't often feel anxious, but when he does there's nothing that a long walk and a good playlist can't fix. Lately, he's been listening to "Another Day." "Han surprised me [with this song]," the dynamic vocalist says. "I listen to it often, and it has inspired me a lot." Han, never one to pass up a compliment, replies, "Thanks, man."
While 3RACHA are largely responsible for crafting Stray Kids' music, the members are all integral to the process. "It's not 3RACHA's music, it's Stray Kids' music," Changbin says in English. "So the members' feedback is very important. I feel the best when they like it."
Case in point: "God's Menu." The group had originally recorded a different lead single, and they were in the throes of comeback preparations when Changbin played a demo of "God's Menu" for some of the members. According to Bang Chan, this happens a lot: "We go home, we play a demo, and we party to it." It's as simple as that. But then something unusual happened: Upon hearing "God's Menu," Hyunjin immediately knew he wanted to perform it. This was Stray Kids. The other members felt it too. "The lyrics expressed our music and confidence best," Changbin says in English, as his members cheer him on. ("Go, Changbin!" Bang Chan encourages.) "It's a song only Stray Kids could perform.”
And it was a theme that personally resonated with Bang Chan. "Back in the day, when we were releasing songs as 3RACHA, I always liked to relate my producing process with cooking and science," he adds. "It's just a really fun concept." (Astute fans might recall the 2017 3RACHA deep cut "Alchemistry," in which the industrious leader declares himself a "mad scientist.")
So 3RACHA went straight to the top — to the company's founder J. Y. Park — and asked if they could change the single to "God's Menu." They didn't expect much; the single had already been locked. To their surprise, however, JYP agreed with their judgement. And so have Stay: "God's Menu" is the group's fastest music video to reach 60 million views, and Go生 broke their previous first-week sales record.
"It's a really funny and very warm feeling knowing that he believes in what we do," Bang Chan says of JYP's support. "And it makes us want to try out even more of our various ideas."
Producer Mike Daley (Baekhyun's "Candy") experienced 3RACHA's creative process and various ideas first-hand in Los Angeles last May when Bang Chan, Changbin, and Han spent a day with him in the studio following the U.S. leg of the group's Unveil tour. They worked on two tracks, one of which would eventually become "Easy." Daley played an unfinished demo for the trio, and the reaction was immediate. "A few of the guys just started rapping," he tells Teen Vogue. Bang Chan workshopped the hook and melodies with a few of Daley's friends and collaborators, while Changbin and Han wrote the verses. "Spear [Changbin] and Han were in their own zone on their phones, writing," he recalls. According to Daley, Spear — a reference to Changbin's 3RACHA moniker SpearB — laid down the first verse, and the atmosphere was electric. "He was going crazy in the booth," he says. "It had a ton of energy. And that got everyone amped up to make the hook have as much energy as the verses were bringing."
Daley, a veteran of K-pop songwriting camps, was surprised by just how involved 3RACHA were in the studio. "They knew how to produce really well, so we were all arranging it together," he says. He also observed their teamwork. "It seemed like they each had their role and worked together well," he adds. "Spear and Han were focused on the verses, but when they heard a melody they liked, they'd look at Chris [Bang Chan]. They knew how to get the song done."
And that sense of creative autonomy isn't just exclusive to 3RACHA. Through self-produced digital projects like "SKZ-PLAYER," all of the members are encouraged to express themselves through their art. "It's a really good platform for us to showcase what we want to show Stay, something that they haven't seen before," Bang Chan says. In May, he surprised fans with "인정하기 싫어," which translates to "Don't Want To Admit," a vulnerable piano ballad that laid bare his heartache. Last year, Lee Know released "Dawn," a slinky dance performance he choreographed himself. Seungmin covered his favorite band, and fellow JYP artists, DAY6. "I am very grateful that we are able to sincerely connect with Stay through music," the floppy-haired vocalist notes. As for Changbin, he recently dropped "Streetlight," a solo track in which he wrestles with feelings of loneliness. And Hyunjin released his own video — a contemporary dance he produced and choreographed to Billie Eilish's "When The Party's Over." He titled it "Empty."
"I wanted to express a different feeling, one that I couldn't show through our own performances," the perceptive dancer says. He choreographed the piece to convey his longing to perform. That loneliness that comes at the end of a party, he says, is the same emptiness he feels when he leaves the stage. "That void I feel sometimes, I wanted to express that through choreography."
Han's "Close" was inspired by the 2004 film Closer, specifically its opening scene, in which a young woman locks eyes with a handsome stranger across the street. The idea of human connection, of seeing someone and wanting to know everything about that person, struck Han, especially at a time when people feel farther apart than ever. But it was too raw to share. "I didn't originally want to release 'Close.' I wanted to keep it to myself," he says. "But after showing it to the members, they encouraged me, and that motivated me to share it."
And they continue to share their artistry with Stay. Fans are getting an intimate look at the members' songwriting and melody-making prowess in "Two Kids Song," a web series that splits them into pairs and challenges each team to write, produce, and record an original song. For Stray Kids, the desire to keep learning and pushing themselves — as songwriters, as performers, and as young adults navigating the world around them — both inside and outside of the practice room, comes naturally. "We're artists," Bang Chan says. "It's right for us to express whatever we want through our creative process."
However, with unfiltered access also comes moments of real humility, a reminder that the relationship between idols and the community they foster isn't defined in scenes of uncritical loyalty and fan service, but rather in instances where they hold one another accountable. In a June livestream, Bang Chan reminded fans, "I don't want you guys to spread negative energy around. Stays, you guys are better than that." That sentiment was recently reciprocated when the group participated in a July variety show segment that many Black fans deemed racially insensitive. Stray Kids apologized in a personal statement posted to the members' shared Instagram account, in which they rejected all types of discrimination with a promise to do better by their fans everywhere around the world. "We are still lacking in many things and we are trying our hardest to become better," they wrote in Korean and English. "We would like to apologize to anyone if we have stepped on a rake. It was never our intention but due to our lack of understanding."
It's this honesty that resonates most with their fans. It's woven into heartfelt lyrics, tearful ending ments, social media posts, virtual hugs, home-cooked meals, and earnest reminders to deal with — not run away from — things that are difficult. It is the lens through which Stray Kids see themselves: never perfect, but always sincere. Mainly, it's how they expel their innermost thoughts and feelings, the joy and the agony of everyday life. Whether that's by working on music, or choreography, or refining a new dish, or bettering themselves, that's ultimately up for them to decide. It always has been. Their appetites are insatiable, after all. "The fact that we have the chance to make the music we want to make and talk about the things we want to talk about is really special," Changbin says. "It makes me more excited for what's next."
A day after talking to Teen Vogue, Bang Chan, Changbin, and Han set the KCON:TACT stage ablaze with an opening performance that showed the world just how hungry they are. “They always say the same excuses, while they’re complaining we’re producing," Bang Chan sings, the Auto-Tune heavy. "The passion I give it, nobody can kill." It's a bold statement for any group to make, especially one as young as Stray Kids. And yet, it's that measure of determination that's defined their careers since they were teens trapped on a hellevator with nowhere to go but up. One day they'll reach the penthouse. For now, they're learning to savor the ride and embrace the mess.
"We're going to enjoy this freedom," Bang Chan says, "and eventually we'll fly high."
"Quails are still learning to adapt to social life." and also, Yuuya caring about Sakuya all the time, it's really cute
What did you think of the new birdies in Holiday Star?
I loved Albert and seeing Tohri some more is great and funny, he's a great birdie. I loved Miru and Kaku they are super wholesome little white marshmallow gumdrops!
What was your first reaction to the Bad Boys Love route?
My first reaction when I played it in 2012 was I sobbed, I was in suspense, I was in surprised, and everything and it made me fall deeper than I was before with Hatoful, it's such a nice route that I wish there was so much more to it and would say that I loved the changed in textbox color that I wish we gotten it for Holistar!
How long did it take you to unlock the ‘hidden routes’ and ‘secret’ endings? What was your reaction to them?
Not to long, I was extremely curious about trying to get any option I can available especially the hidden routes and even the easy to miss conversations, I was so eager to get everything complete! I was extremely surprised with some and it was extremely enjoyable and didn't feel like a drag like I would feel for most other games like these.
Do you like to draw certain birdies a lot?
Answered! I used to draw a lot of Yuuya and Shuu, and Nageki art, I still do to this day! But now I draw a lot of Ryuuji and Quail boyfriends as well.
What are some of your favorite ships?
I really like a lot of ships, especially quail boyfriends and HitoriNageki and even Ryuuji Isa just the relationship in general I think is cute, I love plenty of other ships, like Sakuya and Ryouta! I do also like Nageki with Anghel!
Least favorite ships?
I don't really have one in all honesty.
Do you own any of the Hatoful merch?
I own a Ryuuji plush with his charm and an isa charm with a Shuu one! I also own fanmade Nageki and Yuuya button! Some other merch I have which is a sticker I did for myself of Nanaki too, it's super old.
Do you write fanfiction for the birdies?
I used to, but they don't exist anymore since I deleted my tumblr from 2012, unfortunately! I just draw more so and make little drabbles.
Do you have any AUs you like to write about?
I would love to draw a few, especially since me and my wife talk about a lot of AUs together of the things we like. I think about drawing some zombie apoc or some metal gear ones since we've talked about that before! I do like to make some winter AU ones that are nice too and cute.
Rank birdies from tallest to shortest.
Nanaki / Hitori > Yuuya > Asami > Leone > Okosan > Shuu = Tohri > Ryouta > Kazuaki > Sakuya > Nageki > Anghel > Miru/Kaku
What are some of your gender and sexuality headcanons?
I headcanon a lot of them to be just bisexual and the ones I think would be not caring or just nonbinary is Anghel and Shuu, and Hitori and Kazuaki and as well as Nageki, but still use he/him! Sakuya and Shuu to me are male leaning at best, while I think Kazuaki + Hitori and Shuu are gay / male leaning, while Shuu is aspec.
How did you get into Hatoful?
I got into Hatoful while dabbling around Yume nikki that I just bumped into a blog back in 2012 talking about it and learned that it recently got a release! I do miss the egg buttons with the save and load, that was cute... I wish we had it again for the remake!
Have you made any friends in the Hatoful fandom?
In 2012, I made a few friends! I made a friend with a really nice person that was a little older than me that we met on an online drawing board called iscribble, I was really young and we would roleplay the birdies. I don't remember what had us lose contact if it was over time or what? I do see them around however! I remember I've been meaning to contact them for a commission. I wasn't friends but I knew someone who used to run a hatoful ask blog named puddington, they were pretty nice! I hope to make new friends this year since I am pretty open to that!
What are some of your favorite headcanons?
I like the idea that Shuu has sensitivity towards the sun, temperature, and especially like I say it's a projection of sorts since he gets pretty moody and likes to be in the shade often. I also think he might have tritanopia. My other headcanon that I think despite things being mildly clearing up for Nanaki, I think he is still will be ridden in guilt with what he's done regardless. And I like to think that both Shuu and Nanaki gained a relationship after BBL, while having somedays being pretty bad for them.
Anghel shares his home country's food with every birdie as form of "healing properties". I think that Sakuya wears heeled boots because he's short. Hehe!
What’s your favorite piece of canon trivia?
Despite everything, Hitori likes bitter sweets! Shuu gets sick from having his glasses removed (Big mood.), Kazuaki-kun doesn't like veggies!
What birdie do you wish had more to them?
I really wish to learn more about Kazuaki-kun, I just more about him even if we know why he doesn't! I just love him and interested about him a lot... I also wish there was more to Anghel as well than just sometimes feel like he's the hehe eccentric character, I just want to know his life besides his chuunibyou.
What are some songs you associate with characters?
Shuu/Isa to me feel strongly of https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_SgWum9kHYk Duvet - Boa
If Okosan had a true human form, what do you think he would look like?
There's this really buff japanese guy on tiktok that wears an apron that I just saw as the embodiment of Okosan, I will draw him in his liking because he just LOOKS like it would be what Okosan would be!
If you could change one thing in the story, what would it be?
Sakuya. I am kidding, I know most of the things he learned and was taught was from his very highly racist and classist dad, but I wish he would not be so? Aggressive towards Anghel... i also wish for the Comedy to drop a bit less, but not drop it entirely because almost a lot of the times it's really perfect!
What’s your version of Hiyoko like?
I like Hiyoko to be messy hair brunette that sometimes brushes it and sometimes doesn't and she can be messy with how she puts on, but really just like any teenage girl, I also picture her to be a little muscular since she is a hunter after all! I like seeing her as mixed as any race really, at most 2012 me just pictured my current partner without knowing lmao....
What’s your favorite irl bird?
Answered! I have many but I love the bearded vulture which I have an OC of!
What do you think would be a cool crossover for Hatoful?
Answered! I think also a Funamusea x Hatoful crossover would be really cute...
Do you have any human designs headcanons for the birds aside from canon (body type, etc)?
Answered!
What kinds of Hatoful merch would you like to see?
Answered! I do think it would be cute if there was also hatoful link charms, I plan making some in the future whenever I find a seller!
Survey #332
i’m even more tired than before to try and think up song lyrics, i’m pasting from Word and then fucking off to bed lmao.
What was the last video message you received on your phone? I think it was a clip of Doris (Sara's beardie) eating and just being her perfect self? Was your last birthday cake homemade or store bought? Store-bought. One thing you miss about middle school? Shit, nothing. Middle school was the worst. Do you have any shirts signed by famous people? No. Have you ever entered an art competition? Yes. Would you ever pierce yourself? No. I am very much about having a professional do your body mods/art. Plus, I have tremors in my hands. Do you live in a safe neighbourhood? Supposedly. We haven't lived here nearly long enough to know. What is the last thing you did that shocked someone? /shrug Do you often find yourself questioning your future? Only always. Have you ever been for a ride in the back of a truck? Yeah. Do you like your license photo? I hate my permit picture. Are you into superheroes? Who’s your favorite? Not very, but I like 'em enough. I always say my favorite is Deadpool, but I know he's technically an anti-hero, but whatever. If you don't include him, uhhhh... maybe Spiderman. Have you started watching any new TV shows recently? No. Have you ever been able pet a normally wild animal, like a tiger or dolphin? No. :( At least, not to my recollection. Have you ever eaten snow? Yeah. There's actually a winter treat 'round here that you make with snow and sugar called snow cream. Good stuff. What is the messiest area in your home? Right now, the spare room/my wanna-be "office." What’s your favorite computer game genre? Still horror, like video games. Do you have any exes your parents never liked? No. Have you received financial help from your parents in the past 5 years? I'm completely financially dependent on them still. Are you a fast or a slow eater? I eat like, stupid fast, but without being messy. People *cough*Mom*cough* will absolutely point it out, but I seriously can't help it. Making a conscious effort to eat slow feels way too weird. What was the last thing you purchased from a small local business? I don't know. Is there anyone in your family/household whom you frequently argue with? No. Have you ever used chewing tobacco? Ew, no. Tell me what's on your mind? I've been considering yet again reaching out to some tattoo parlors and asking if they're open to hiring someone to handle the front desk and take care of business besides actually performing piercing and tattooing, given my tremors. My group therapy has kinda been encouraging me to use the possibility for social exposure, and besides, I'm very comfortable in the environment and just general aura of tat parlors. I'm sure I'd have to answer the phone, handle money, and obviously talk to costumers, but I know and accept that. I've been at such a stagnant point with my social anxiety in particular that I have to start pushing back harder, and doing this I feel would be one of the most relaxed, social job positions I can hopefully handle. I don't dare to even try this though until I get vaccinated to protect my immunocompromised mom. Writing this all out has actually been pretty encouraging about this idea... Do you wish you never dated someone you dated? Yeah, Tyler. It was such a "I'm lonely and he was nice in high school, so we'll try it" situation. I got nothing from it. Are you scared of growing old alone? Pretty badly. What are you listening to right now? I'm listening to/semi-watching John Wolfe play the remaster of Resident Evil 2. What breed was the last dog you saw? He was a German shepherd. Would you ever go swimming during a thunderstorm? No. Any time a thunderstorm was brewing and I was in the pool, I'd always get out. What is the next concert you will attend? Mom and I plan to see Ozzy when/if he reschedules his tour after he had to cancel with his Parkinson's diagnosis. What was the name of the last pet of yours that died? Teddy. :/ What's the highest science class you have taken? I don't know, actually. What makes you squeal like a school girl? No shame, seeing Mark and Amy do something cute together actually does this, lmao. What’s your favorite symbol? (i.e. the pentagram, the cross, etc.) Do fictional ones count? Because in that case, the Halo of the Sun from the Silent Hill franchise. I'm getting it tattooed somewhere at some point, I'm thinking the left side of my neck. I'm either gonna fashion it in a way where it looks branded on or carved into me. Have you ever been on anti depressants? For all of my pre-teen, teen, and some of my adult life. Apparently, I've only had one truly educated psychiatrist out of no less than a dozen I'd seen, because he fixed me right up. He taught me that those who suffer from bipolarity should avoid anti-depressants; they ramp up your bipolar symptoms. Instead, mood stabilizers are favorable. And what do you know, after I was prescribed a stabilizer and a catalyst for that medication, my depression decreased dramatically and became handleable. Have you ever starved yourself? Kinda. What’s the stupidest name you’ve ever given a pet? I had a guinea pig named Harry Potter. For no particular reason lmao. I'm not even a Harry Potter fan. Do you have nice legs? God no. Do you like fedoras? Okay so I know I am in the strong minority, but I actually do, haha. What is your favorite food group? Carbs. @_@ Have you ever got told that you should be a model? No, but one of the most flattering indirect compliments I've ever gotten was being mistaken for one. Jason's phone wallpaper was one of my favorite pictures of myself with my first snake, and someone asked him if I was a model. ;v;' What song is in a language you don’t speak, but you love it anyway? "Donaukinder" by Rammstein is one of my faves. Who’s a villain you sympathize with and why? SOBS Darkiplier bc his origins are so damn tragic and unfair. What book do you think should be directed as a film? Was The Giver ever made into one? I don't remember that book well, but I do recall it being absolutely beautiful. Have you ever found a stranger’s note somewhere? If so, what did it say? No. Have you ever edited Wikipedia? No. Have you ever edited any other wiki? Yeah. I have thousands on the Silent Hill wiki, where I'm one of the admins. I'm also a content moderator at the Team Ico (Shadow of the Colossus devs) one. Every now and again I used to go on the meerkats wiki as well, where I mainly fixed the fucking nightmarish grammar. Very briefly, I edited at the Dragons of Atlantis wiki as well. Do you get scared when you know some virus or sickness is being passed? Not very, but of course I still acknowledge the risk and am more conscious of hand washing and stuff. What popular social media platforms AREN’T you on? Snapchat, I don't actually use my Twitter, I don't have a personal Instagram... There may be more, idk. Is TikTok a "social media platform?" Because I don't have that, either. What was the name of the first porcelien doll you got? Never had one, given I was afraid of dolls as a kid. What’s your favorite Paramore song? "Decode." Would you be happy with a life without romance? To be entirely honest, I'd feel like I was missing something. Was your childhood happy? Mostly. What fundamentally matters do you? Love, kindness, peace, all that gooey stuff. Is true world peace ever possible? As much as I hate to admit it, I don't think so. The human population is far too big to come to a unanimous agreement on anything. Do you hold yourself to higher standards than you hold others? Yeah. Would you ever own a pet black widow spider? No. I'm getting more into the idea of owning invertebrates (I jabber enough about wanting tarantulas, and there are others, like mantises, I'm interested in as pets), but black widows, I'm not into the idea of having. Too venomous for me to be comfortable risking. If you have a job, what is the longest shift that you've worked? N/A Do you know all of the words to "Bohemian Rhapsody?" FUCK YES I DO. ^ Do you sing it with all of the different voices? sho nuff Do you own more than one copy of a certain book? No. Do you like interpreting poetry or just reading it for fun? Both. I love symbolism, so I get joy out of digging for subtle meanings in poems. Do you have a favorite Dr. Suess book? Yeah, it was always Green Eggs and Ham. Do you watch The Walking Dead? If so, favorite character? Not the show, but I've watched let's plays of the games, haha. In which case Clementine is inarguably one of the best female characters in a video game universe. Who has/had the most mature romantic relationship you’ve seen with your own eyes? Uhhh. I mean I never saw them much, but probably my late grandmother and her last husband. He was fucking incredible to her, and Grammy adored him as well. They helped each other so much and just obviously had the purest love between them. When was the last time you got something for free (legally)? What was it & have you enjoyed it so far? Lmao do balls in Pokemon GO count? Their occasional free boxes are the reason I can play the game because PokeStops are essentially non-existent here, so yes. What is the one fruit you can’t stand to eat? How about vegetable? The first one that came to me were oranges. I enjoy orange juice, but I just caaaaannot with the white veiny shit that you can't totally get off when peeling it. Without that, I might actually enjoy them, but idk. As for vegetable, asparagus is absolutely abhorrent. When’s the last time you actually recited the pledge? If you aren’t American, do/did you have anything similar in your country that you do during a time at school? Probably not since high school. Last person you shared food with? Ummm I have no idea. It's really just Mom and me here and we eat our own stuff. What was the last song you heard for the first time and enjoyed? I believe it waaas... "Down In The Park" by Marilyn Manson, maybe. If your life was a TV show, what would be the theme song? My inner high school emo just screamed "All Signs Point to Lauderdale" by AD2R. Who are some of your favorite female fictional characters, and why? Gahdamn, there's a lot. I don't feel like going through a mental list in my head and then describing why. A character (in anything) you wish hadn’t been killed off? Vol'jin; I think the entire WoW fanbase will forever be pissed about it. It was THE most "lul we dunno what 2 do w/ him anymore, let's let a totally random, unnamed, unimportant demon kill him" like what the fuck, Blizz. Most of his "oomph" was in the book, and I just really wish they'd done so much more with him in the game. Has anything “cute” happened in the past week? Off the top of me noggin, no. When did you last say “I love you”? Did you mean it? Yesterday to Sara. OF course I did. Is there someone who pops into your mind at random times? Hi, PTSD, how are ya. Have you ever slept all day? Essentially. When I was on a larger dose of my anxiety med, I physically couldn't stay up for barely even five minutes, and when I'd lie back down, boom, I was OUT. I stayed on that dosage for I think just that one day, it was so bad. Can you have kids? Well, I have a functioning menstrual cycle, so I would assume so. Doesn't mean I will, though. What colors of mascara have you worn on your lashes? Only black. Do you like eating sour things? Hell yeah, I love sour stuff, candy in particular. Do you like pickles? fuuuuck yeah Did you ever have a really close friend move away? Yeah, in elementary school. I feel bad I can't remember her name at the moment... What's the most creative thing you've ever done? I mean, I guess the things I've written in RP. What's the most creative thing someone has done for you? For me? I don't really know. Do you like to watch ghost-hunting shows? Sure, they're some of my favorites. What’s something you’d like to be better at? Social interaction. Have you ever stayed up to talk to someone who was sad? Yeah. Do you think you would make a good parent? No. I know I wouldn't. The only time I ever wanted kids was with Jason, and honestly, I really hope I don't end up with a man because I never want to deal with that urge again and make a mistake. I'm just in no way emotionally fit to be a mother. How many best friends do you have? Just one. What do you cry over the most? My PTSD, honestly. I never sob about it anymore, just shed some tears. What language did/do you take in high school? Latin for one semester, then all four available for German. Which sports do you follow? None. Who was the last person you talked about marriage or having kids with? About marriage, Sara. Kids, the subject was lightly touched upon with Girt, though "with" was never a part of it, but obviously implied seeing as we were dating with long-term in mind. Have you ever been in a house fire? No, thankfully. Have you ever made out for one straight hour? them is rookie numbers Are you any good at remembering phone numbers? No. I literally don't even know my own, nor my mother's. I need to fix that. Who is your best friend of the opposite sex? Girt. Do you have a bookshelf? If so, just one or how many? No. If I gave you twenty bucks what would you do with it? Save it to go towards Venus' terrarium. Is there a movie from your childhood that you still watch today? Well of course! I'm unashamed to watch any "kids" movie I enjoy, like Disney ones. Most "kids" movies tend to be better than those intended for adults, it seems... Are you afraid of mice? Oh no, I adore mice and I think had a pair as pets before I got rats. What type of souvenir do you usually purchase when on vacation? I can't really answer this; I haven't gone on nearly enough vacations to develop a theme. I can say confidently though it'd probably be something small. If you could see any musical on Broadway right now, what would it be? I don't enjoy musicals. Have you ever watched Doctor Who? One or two with Sara, yes. I know we at least watched the weeping angels episode. If you read, which book or series did you enjoy most as a child? Warriors by S.E. Hinton. Sometimes I wanna get back into them, but I am YEARS behind and more into Wings of Fire anyway, so. I don't read nearly enough for both. How do you get rid of your hiccups? Literally no trick seems to work for me. I just suffer lmao.
So I'm always not able to share all the knowledge that I have and try not to go dig deeper when explaining stuff because all my efforts are only going to go to waste if they're not interested. so now that i’m no longer in the Hell that was school and after finding the lovely blog @endcringe i’ve decided to talk about my own experiences with cringe culture, bullying, and why it’s Really Bad to not let people enjoy inherently harmless things, especially neurodivergent people (read more because this is gonna get long and triggering at times, TW for mentions of bullying, suicide, child abuse, a brief mention of incest shipping. I won’t be naming any of the peers that I discuss my experiences with, because my point with this post is Not to “cancel” anyone, I just want to speak out on my experiences)
I’m neurodivergent; I was diagnosed with ADHD when I was 8 years old. I didn’t know a lot about it, and a family member even painted it as “oh it’s nothing blah blah blah just apply yourself more. Because of this, I had no idea about the concept of hyperfixations until I was in my late teens. Due to that, I would obsess over random things and my family would shame me relentlessly for it. My mother said I had an “addictive personality” and that she feared I’d end up a drug addict or alcoholic because of it.
I look younger than what I am, I’m short, and small. AKA, the perfect candidate for being picked on by people bigger and stronger than me. People made fun of my art when I was around 13, but fortunately that was an instance where spite fueled me to improve drastically. However, just because I happened to take the shitty comments and have it fuel me then does NOT mean bullying people will have that effect all the time. At some point someone put my old South Park fan art on a cringe blog. I was temporarily hurt, and a little angry, but I realized that if someone was making fun of a 15 year old’s art, they probably didn’t have much going for them in life, so I moved on.
Fast forward to high school. Everything was horrible and I’m not exaggerating when I say I barely made it out alive. I was living in an abusive household up until January 2018 and I found comfort in many different interests. I’ve always found great comfort in music and the arts in general. In 2016, I drew a picture of a mermaid. I was inspired by the chocolate opal gemstone, and I thought it’d be fun to draw a gay chubby mermaid with dark skin and a rainbow tail and freckles. Junior year was lousy and I wanted something that sparked Joy. I was immediately told that “scientifically, mermaids wouldn’t look like that. Mind you, my take looked like this:
Tumblr media
Obviously I wasn’t going for realism, I just wanted to draw a cute mermaid. However, they continued to tell me that they wouldn’t look like that, going as far as writing so on the back of said drawing. When I got angry at her for taking it too far (as I’d established before that I didn’t like it when people wrote on my art without permission), they got angry back, accusing me of being unable to take criticism. Heated by the accusation, I went as far as asking my art teacher if it was fair for them to say that, and she said no, stating that constructive criticism would be talking about how I could improve my lineart and coloring in the digital version. I took her actual helpful criticism and since then have improved Drastically in digital art. Even with that being said, I found myself hesitant to participate in things such as MerMay because I was leery of hearing that peer berate me for having cartoony mermaids.
 During high school I grew to love many musicians, a lot of emo/alternative stuff, a couple being Twenty One Pilots and Melanie Martinez. I love how unique TOP’s style is, their open discussion of mental illness, and as someone who had a rough childhood, I connected with every single song on Cry Baby. It was like nothing I’d ever heard. I started listening to mashups featuring all these different artists I love, adoring how they could change the tone and sound so drastically. A peer Bully of mine in junior year condemned these two artists, declaring that they made “Bad Music” simply because it didn’t fit their tastes. They’d throw my drawings on the ground, write over them in pen, steal my headphones so I couldn’t listen to music, push me around, complain that mashups sucked and gave them a headache, and in general shit all over conetnt that was actively preventing me from committing suicide.
Some family members were no better. Once high school hit, I began listening to Fall Out Boy, Panic! at the Disco, and My Chemical Romance. Their deep complex lyrics stuck with me. I would write down quotes from my favorite songs and thanks to hyperfixating, I remember each studio album in order My mother resented when I fell in love with the “Emo Trinity” because “the Columbine  shooters were emo and that event traumatized me” Despite that, not only did the Columbine tragedy occur in 1999 and none of the bands got together until the early 2000s, but I have a pretty good feeling those groups aren’t For gun violence. The other side constantly criticized the fact that I love FOB, P!ATD, and MCR because I’m black and “why must you listen to that white people music.”
 I grew fond of Dan and Phil in high school (and I’m still a fan to this day!), I loved Phil’s kindness and positive aura and I deeply connect with Dan’s sense of humor and personality. Their content made me happy during some very dark times in my life. It’s November 2017, I’m over a close peer’s house at the time, and notice PINOF is upon us. I drew the PINOF whiskers on my face, my plan being to quietly watch them in the corner of peer’s bedroom on my phone through headphones, the others were doing their own thing and I knew they didn’t like them, so I thought they’d respect it if I silently indulged in it. Unfortunately, the complete opposite happened. I was immediately shunned and locked out of the bedroom, told that I’d only be let back in if I washed the whiskers off because “absolutely not”. Me, being stubborn, washed them off temporarily but drew them back on in the room. Life during then was especially bad for me, as the abusive household I was in was getting worse. They noticed, of course, and even though all I wanted was to enjoy this small tradition in a time during a deep depression, I was immediately shoved out the room and locked out, only to have said peer’s family members notice. I’m a relatively shy person, so this was honesty a really harrowing experience that had a lasting effect on me.
I grew to adore Sanders Sides as well, but the moment I found out most of my peers didn’t like Thomas, I was terrified.  I stopped watching Dan and Phil’s content for months and shied away from other fandoms too, only occasionally indulging in times of complete solitude. One time when said peers were due to visit my house for the first time, I saw the Phandom and Fander stuff I’d hung up on my wall in my little sanctuary that was my bedroom (it was the first time in years I’d had my own room), and I was filled with panic and fear. I took them down and hid them away, genuinely terrified of what they’d do to me if they saw. It’s still incites so much anger in me to this day because they turned around and ended up shipping incest, but somehow liking D&P and Sanders Sides was So. Much. Worse.
They were baffled by my actions, despite having humiliated me Twice by going on a private blog of mine separate from everything so that I could fully indulge and laughing at everything on there, once at a peer’s house, once right in school. I don’t think they realized how traumatizing it was to have a large group of people in public laughing at something I was deeply self conscious about for all of my life. I put on a brave face at the time, but ended up crying in the bathroom after first period began. I continued to be treated as lesser until things came to an ugly head August 2018 when I ended up in the hospital because I nearly attempted suicide. Years of child abuse, bullying, and being deemed “cringy” made me feel like I didn’t deserve to be alive, that everyone would be happier if I were gone.
After arguably one of the lowest points in my life, I cut them off and slowly began to embrace the Real Me. I started letting myself enjoy the things again, made true friends and even found love, my first boyfriend ever at 18. I still get choked up retelling it, but when PINOF 10 dropped, after he found out how much I’d been hurt over the incident in 2017, I was greeted with a photo of him with the whiskers on his face. I cried for a while, blown away at such a pure act of kindness. He listens to me ramble about my interests, he compliments my taste in music, he watched K-12 with me.
This got incredibly long, but my point is this: Cringe Culture hurts people. You might think it’s whatever if the Thing doesn’t apply to your interests, but content you’re denouncing as cringy could be something that’s keeping them alive, that one flicker of light in a void of darkness. When I was contemplating suicide, I listened to The Black Parade, repeating Gee’s words to myself over and over, that nothing in the world was worth hurting yourself over. Some friendly joshing here and there is okay, but actively ripping someone to shreds constantly to the point where they have a mental breakdown in front of you and later on plan their own demise is disgusting. Nobody should abuse anyone for having harmless interests, no one. Unless you’re participating in p*dophilic/inc*st/s*xual assault/inherently abusive ships/content and pretending it’s not bad because “Fiction doesn’t impact reality!”, you have every right to like what you like and be happy. Read homestuck. Play Undertale. Draw up the Wildest OCs you can imagine. And stay away from people who try to rob you of innocent fun, life is too short and in this cruel, unforgiving world, you deserve to be happy, whether you’re a 13 year old who draws cute furries, a 16 year old cosplayer on TikTok, a VSCO girl, a 30 year old who writes/draws self insert art or a 20 year old who adores Invader Zim.
Cringe Culture is just bullying under a different name, and it can lead to many instances of people, especially fellow neurodivergent folk to feel isolated and ostracized. Attempting to bully someone out of an interest they have isn’t going to fix them; it’s more often than not going to cause more damage. I suffer from diagnosed C-PTSD, anxiety, and depression, and sometimes I still find myself trying to over-justify my interests. To all who are roped up in bad homes and lousy “friends” who berate you for your innocent passions, I’m sorry you’re suffering, things will one day get better even if it doesn’t feel like it, and fuck those people. I’d also like to note that sometimes even if it seems more terrifying, it’s better to have one or two close friends you can truly trust than a whole group that walks all over you. You have every right to call them out for treating you poorly, and if things don’t improve, you also have every right to leave.
You have a right to live your True Self.
DAY 20: YEONJUN
Tumblr media
11/20/2020
wc: 1640
Yeonjun feels as if deep down, he knew that K-Arts wasn’t in his future. And rather than being upset about it longer than he already was, he had decided to accept it in the end. It’s not like he an expect his parents to pay his tuition at this point. And even if he was willing to make music to go through the audition process again, he felt as if it wasn’t worth the effort if he’d be staying in college longer. After all, he felt as if he knew a good amount to get him out into the real world with his music.
So when his parents let him know that he could move out but that they won’t pay for his tuition in both K-Arts AND SNU, he accepted it. He didn’t ask any other questions and he simply told the both of them that he’d try to get out of their hair as soon as they can. It’s why he’s in the process of packing everything together to move over to San’s house. And it wasn’t that much, considering the boy practically spent most of his nights there nowadays.
As he was cleaning out his room, he hears a knock on the door. “Come in,” he says.When he turns around to see who’s at the door, he isn’t at all surprised over the fact that it was his mother. Though he didn’t get along well with the both of them, she was always the one that made an attempt to communicate with him. Not like he cared too much about that anyways, since they both preferred Seojun in the end anyways.
"Do you need help with anything?” she asks. It confuses him at first, as he wasn’t really used to her caring for him. But he doesn’t think about it too much. After all, he had to focus on getting out of here as soon as he could.
“I’m good. Thanks,” he says, sounding as polite as he could. Even if he didn’t really want to interact with her, the other woman was still his mother. So rather than talking to her, he tries his best to bring his attention on finishing his task at hand instead.
She sighs. That can’t be good. It looks like she wants to say something. “Yeonjun, can we talk? Please?”
He looks at her for a split moment and contemplates for a second on what he should do. On one hand, he could end this “polite” act with her and continue to pack just so he could get out of here as soon as he could. On the other hand, besides the fact that he didnt want to straight up be rude to her, whatever she had to say to him could be important enough to him.
So, he puts what her was holding to the side and he looks at his mother, waiting for her to say what she had to say to him. “What’s up?”
“Do you really think that your father and I don’t care about you?”
The question alarmed him, but he thankfully already knew his answer to it. He knew it a long time ago. He nodded his head.
Just from that, the woman’s face dropped. “Oh, Yeonjun. I’m so sorry.”
“Why?” he asks. “Why are you sorry?”
“I never realized how much we hurt you growing up,” she responds. “All this time, I just thought we were giving you tough love. Your father and I just thought we were giving you some advice for the future. But to know that we hurt you? That’s so…”
He furrows his eyebrows. “What do you mean? Are you saying you were not aware?” he asks with a bit of an accusatory tone. “If you were going to just give me tough love, why did you not give your oldest the same type of treatment? Just say you had a clear bias and leave.”
“That’s the thing. We only realized that after you told us on that one night,” she explains. “When you told us about how hurt you felt over the fact that we have always showed favoritism over your brother rather than you, we realized we were not treating you like proper parents. And… on behalf of both your father and I, we’re really sorry about all the pain we have caused you.”
When he listens to her apology, he wishes he can just ask her to leave his room so that he can continue cleaning. After living with them for so long, he has doubts over the possibility of them ever changing their ways for him.
So the first thing that he says after she confesses that is a statement. “You know you’re not going to change my mind about moving out, right?”
She sighs. “Is this what you really want?”
“Considering the fact that I only felt comfortable at my own friend’s house than I did with you guys, yeah. It is what I want.” He crosses his arms. “You can’t expect me to forgive you after years of you guys making me miserable. Whether it was intentional or not, you still are responsible for the negative emotions I felt in this house. So I don’t want to have to continue associating with that any longer than I have to.”
The response seems to have affected his mother a lot, but it’s not like Yeonjun regrets what he said. She knew that, too. He wouldn’t purposely say these things only to hurt her. So rather than trying to argue with her son anymore, she accepts defeat and nods her head.
“I understand,” she says, sounding defeated. Yeonjun isn’t sure if it’s genuine or if she’s just acting to get some sympathy from him. “I can’t really convince you to choose otherwise. So, all I can do is wish you the best and hope you know what you’re doing.”
He looks at her with a tight smile. “I’m not a little baby anymore, mom. I know what I want to do with my life.”
And with that, she turns to leave her room as he continues to pack his belongings to move away.
The moment he uploaded his song on a TikTok, he didn’t expect it to get as much attention as it did. So when it made its rounds to not only San’s “For You” page, but also his friends from SOPA’s, he was definitely shocked. Never did he think a song like his would ever go viral on the internet, let alone get any attention at all. The fact that even his famous friends decided to use it for their audios warmed their hearts and soon enough, he was able to get contacted by an entertainment company.
He still lives with San, thankfully. He wasn’t signed to a company that required him to dance and train. All he had to do was make music in the comfort of his own home and give it on specific due dates. And with his increasing TikTok fame, he could even promote himself on the app so that his fans could listen to it and be determined to stream. It’s strange to think about, him being able to follow his dreams in a different way than what he thought he would. But he was definitely satisfied with the results.
He decides to go LIVE on TikTok for the first time. It’s been a while since he had gone live on the app, with his schedules constantly taking up his time. If it wasn’t that, he’d also be spending too much time with San. Not like it was an issue though, considering the fact that he had been out to his fans for a couple of months now.
Like his usual LIVEs, he would joke around with his fans and answer some questions that they had about him. Obviously, he would ignore the ones that he had already answered or anything that made him uncomfortable. But there was one comment that gained his attention and he felt as if he had no choice but to answer it as soon as he saw it.
“‘I’ve been struggling a lot mentally with life, but your music always manages to make me get through it. Thank you so much for all you do, Junie.’” After he reads that, he looks at the camera with a smile. “You have no idea how happy those comments make me feel,” he says with genuine earnest in his voice. “Honestly, I want to be able to make music that could make others happy and go through difficult moments in their life. I have struggled a lot mentally in the past myself and I felt like I always needed someone to help me out. So knowing that I’m able to be that person for you really warms my heart. I’m so glad I could be that person for you. And I hope I’m like that to you all as well.”
After he says that, all his fans respond with the pleading face emoji and he finds himself laughing before he tries to imitate that face. As soon as he goes back to his normal face, he continues to read comments. “‘When’s the album coming, king?’” he laughs as soon as he sees that comment before he looks at his phone camera with a wink. “Can you guys chill? I just released a song yesterday. You can’t rush perfection!”
After he says that, he brings his phone up to his lips to whisper something. “Watch out for it in a month. If I reveal anymore, I’m going to get in trouble with my manager.”
After that, he puts his camera back on its tripod, noticing a text notification from none other than the big guy himself. Well, once a little shit, always a little shit.
Tumblr media
Hello everyone! It’s Ricky. Okay this week I’m focusing my blog post around the central idea of “songs I would play if I owned and managed a small, obscure listening bar in an alley in Tokyo with egg shells hanging from the ceiling and experimental films being projected on the walls”. These are songs inspired by a time I went on a date with a boy at a small, obscure listening bar in an alley in Tokyo with egg shells hanging from the ceiling and experimental films being projected on the walls. We “met” on Grindr (obviously) and first got dinner at this really chic restaurant. It was one of those restaurants where you sit on the floor, and we were the only people there. The menu was hand written in Japanese on a seemingly antique paper scroll and above us was an erotic painting of a woman defecating on the floor. We couldn't read the menu because neither of us speak Japanese (he is from New York but just moved to Tokyo to be a “freelance graphic designer and image consultant”...whatever that means) so we just ordered something random. It ended up being a single piece of asparagus and like 3 baby corns. Literally that’s it. And it was almost $100. He paid for it and then we left to go to a bar I recommended.
Once we got to the bar it became apparent that it was very my moment and very not his moment. The music was an uncomfortably loud ringing noise when we got there, and it stayed that way for a long time. There is only enough room for 4 people to sit in there, but you could probably fit 10 if you wanted to touch each other. There was a video of a naked woman writhing around on the floor being projected on the walls and the one man who works there seemed really mean. I loved it! Eventually, The Crying Pill by Matmos came on and I literally had an out of body experience. I had never heard this song before, but I was living. I tried to Shazam it but it didn’t work so I took a voice memo of it instead. I told the boy that it was the best song I had ever heard and was so sad I wouldn’t be able to find it. He was not into the song at all but he was pretending to enjoy himself. Anyway, the date was like whatever. He told me he wanted to get face tats and was kind of boring. I never saw him again after that night, but the next day I was listening to my Spotify Discover Weekly playlist and that song came on! Basically what I’m getting at is that it was destiny for me to hear that song at that bar on that night. So now I listen to that song all the time and pretend I work at that bar and get to choose the music they play there. That was a really long introduction to this blog post but 1) you needed that context and 2) this is a blog so I’m not going to apologize for making you read.
The first song I would play at my bar is Plural by Sote. I’m listening to this song right now as I’m writing this and just realized this is my Sicko Mode. Like, this is that song you could throw on at any time and I will immediately drop to my knees. Oh my god, I have chills right now.
The next song I would play is Filament 1 - 1 by Sachiko M and Yoshihide Otomo. I texted this song to Ronan and Cole in our group chat saying “me wall twerking to this song” and Cole laughed at me. I wasn’t joking though, this song makes me want to wall twerk. This song would work really well in a bar/club setting because the only thing better in social spaces than loud music is unusually quiet music.
I also sent them Akuta by Sugai Ken, which would be queued up next. Cole referred to this song as “cave dwelling realness” and Ronan said “the cover of it is cute”. I agree with them and would add that it’s seductive and rousing.
When the clock strikes midnight I play Fantasy by Against All Logic. This song samples Beyoncé’s 2003 seminal masterpiece Baby Boy in the most major way possible. At this point everyone involved would be sweating. The title of this song has me thinking about fantasies. I’ve been fantasizing about being held captive in a large plywood box. If there are any psychology majors reading this please let me know what that says about me.
The next song is Frontier Control by Ausschuss. This is the type of song I would want to listen to while being held captive in a large plywood box. Should I expand on this plywood box fantasy? Yeah, I should. The box would be very large, like, big enough for me to run around in, and I’d be chained up in the center to a really chic bed. This would all be consensual, like I would sign myself up to be held captive in this box. It’s like performance art, I guess. Maybe there would be a peep hole in the box for people to watch me while I listen to this song.
Okay moving on from the box fantasy, the next song is Hard Screw by Metal Preyers. This song has the most beautiful Bon Iver-esque vocal, but like Bon Iver in an accidental K-Hole.
Next I would play Music of the Air by Tim Hecker. This song is actually dedicated to someone really special in my life. Recently my friends and I have been texting a prisoner, and we love him so much. My friend Saya found him on TikTok and got his number, and we’ve all been talking to him since. We still aren't sure how he has a phone in prison. I asked him and he said “bought it”. But it really doesn’t matter, he is so honest and has the sweetest heart (not to mention he’s gorgeous). He has the cutest chains, like he is fully iced out even in prison. He really enjoys talking to us, and even told Saya that he loves her and sent NSFW pictures to Lexi! I dream of one day taking him on a date to my bar in Japan. Until then, we’ll just have to communicate through a screen. This one’s for you baby, one year left until you’re free!
The final song of the night is YUNG RAPUNXEL PT.II by Azealia Banks. This is the perfect song to end a great night. My favorite part is when she asks “want a piece of candy?”. I totally want a piece of candy, do you?
Peace and blessings,
-Ricky
How Schitt’s Creek and Annie Murphy Turned A Little Bit Alexis into a Certified Banger
When Schitt’s Creek airs its season finale next week, it will leave behind not a singular legacy, but a collection of indelible marks on pop culture: the inimitable Moira Rose and her singular accent. David and Patrick’s understatedly groundbreaking love story, immortalized on billboards and magazine covers alike. And a pair of wildly different songs that took on a life well beyond the show. One is a heartfelt cover of a classic that became a talisman for Schitt’s Creek’s most beloved relationship. The other is a frenetic, frothy synth-pop creation plucked from the ether that is Alexis Rose’s past.
It’s been just over a year since “A Little Bit Alexis” first entered our collective consciousness, in a season five episode that finds Alexis auditioning for the town’s unforgettable performance of Cabaret. “I have chosen to perform the title track off of my critically-reviewed, limited reality series, A Little Bit Alexis,” she proclaims proudly to a bewildered Moira and Jocelyn. “Feel free to sing along if you know the words!” Though that request is ignored on the show, in the real world, Alexis would find a lot of takers. Ever since the full track was released last year, a gradual snowball effect has taken “A Little Bit Alexis” from a fun character note to a bona fide hit that can be heard in gay clubs nationwide.
Over the past few weeks, as the coronavirus pandemic dramatically transformed daily life across the globe and sent millions of people into lockdown, “A Little Bit Alexis” took yet another new lease on life as a viral TikTok sensation. Dozens of quarantined fans across the world are, probably right at this very moment, trying out Alexis’s deranged dance moves as a means of staving off cabin fever. As Alexis herself would doubtless say: yum!
The appeal of “A Little Bit Alexis” only grows as you discover more about its creation: Murphy herself wrote those ingenious lyrics while enlisting two musicians—her husband, Menno Versteeg, and his former bandmate Nick Boyd—as her collaborators. Below, the full story of how “A Little Bit Alexis” was conceived, created, and shaped into a phenomenon, as told by Murphy, Schitt’s Creek co-creator Dan Levy, and the entire musical creative team.
Dan Levy: From the first few days my dad and I spent brainstorming about what the show could be, I had come up with this little detail from Alexis’s past: She had a very short-lived, critically reviewed reality show called A Little Bit Alexis. It’s one of those things you write down as context for the character without knowing whether it’ll make it into the show. Four seasons later, Alexis auditioning for Cabaret felt like the perfect opportunity to hear the title track.
Annie Murphy: We were at the table read and I saw in the script, “Alexis performs ‘A Little Bit Alexis,’” and that’s all it said. I was both inspired by and jealous of Noah Reid in the previous season, when he did his own beautiful rendition of “Simply the Best.” So I immediately said to Dan, “I will try to write this,” not realizing that I am not a musician and Noah very much is a musician! And somehow Dan agreed to let this happen.
Levy: I like to hand over the torch to the cast and say “run free” with that kind of content creation. With Noah and his cover of “The Best,” I had given him the choice of whether to take a stab at it himself or bring someone in. With Annie it was the same approach, and she said, “Please let me take a stab at this.”
Murphy: Once I got the green light, of course I was like, “Oh fuck. Okay, resources, resources.” So I found my two dear musician people, and told them, “Well, I just got myself into a predicament.”
Menno Versteeg: I remember very clearly the moment Annie described it to me, the whole scene and what it needed to be and the backstory of the song. Earlier that same day, I’d been in some kind of chain fashion store and “Work Bitch” by Britney Spears was on. The second she told me, I knew I wanted to rip off the feel of that song. We set out to make a song you want to do spin class to.
Murphy: We went into my friend Nick’s studio, and we listened to “Work Bitch” so many times our ears started to bleed, but in the best way. We also listened to “Stars Are Blind” and a bunch of Paris Hilton stuff. And then Nick and Menno got to work on the melody, and I started writing the lyrics, and we all got on a roll.
Nick Boyd: Menno and I were in a band [Hollerado] together for years and years. We were all friends growing up and Annie would sometimes come with us on tour, so we’ve been making music and hanging out together as pals for literally 20 years.
Versteeg: When you’re married to someone who’s in a band, it’s a very specific type of relationship. For the first half of Hollerado’s career, Annie was a struggling actress—she would get the odd commercial or bit part here and there, but she had a lot of time off. So she would often come on tour with the band, and that would involve sometimes coming onstage to sing with us. We ended up writing songs together—she wrote half the lyrics to one of the more well-known Hollerado songs, “Good Day At The Races.” All of that backstory factored into what we were able to do with “A Little Bit Alexis.”
Murphy: We knew it had to be funny, and we knew it had to be kind of spoofy, but we all secretly wanted it to be a fucking banger of a song that people would actually put on to pre-drink to and, you know, dance to at the club. [Pauses] I sounded like such a grandmother there. “Dance to at the club”?
Boyd: When Menno and Annie came in, I had already put together a baseline and a groove, and they were feeling it, so we started brainstorming verse ideas. We knew the era when the song was supposed to have been released [the early 2000s], so we asked ourselves, what would Alexis’s younger self have wanted to put out, given the musical trends at that time?
Versteeg: There’s something really fun about being able to do trashy garbage pop that’s also tongue-in-cheek. It doesn’t need to be subtle in any way, you just throw in every single hook you can think of. Annie wrote all the lyrics, and she’s one of the funniest people on this entire planet, and that really reflected when she started having fun with the lyrics.
Boyd: Annie knows the character so thoroughly, from top to bottom, so it was easy to say whether a lyric was gonna work or not. I think somebody suggested “I’m a little bit drunk when I drive my car,” and Annie was like, “Well, she wouldn’t say drunk. She would say tipsy.” And that lyric really spring-boarded the process, because the idea behind it is that she is above the law—she can get away with anything and has no sense of her own privilege. That became a theme for us.
Murphy: I think I just blacked out and woke up and it was written down.
Levy: Everything in the show is considered, so we were never going to use a version of the song that didn’t feel right for the character. What’s so spot on about the lyrics they came up with is they really highlight this stark contrast between who Alexis was and who she is now.
Murphy: My favorite moment, when we were recording, was trying to make that “neigh” as sexy as possible. It’s an intense moment. I remember being like, “I never thought I’d be in the position of sexily whispering ‘neigh’ into a microphone, but here I am.”
Chris Soper: I’d known Annie and Menno and Nick for years—they would do their records at the same studio I worked out of in Brooklyn. Menno approached me after they’d done the writing and recording and asked if I would mix the song. He described this vision for something that sounded like a 2000s Britney Spears dance hit.
Versteeg: There’s a term producers use to describe music: a track is “in the box” or “out of the box,” and “the box” means the computer. So an out-of-the-box track would be something like Arcade Fire: all their gear is analogue, every single sound is a real sound that comes from an instrument, in some cases there’s no computer involved until the very end. “A Little Bit Alexis” is entirely the opposite: It’s made completely inside the computer. We didn’t use one real instrument. It’s the cheapest, quickest, dirtiest way to get the most bang-for-your-buck sound. You’re not trying to get anything that sounds fresh.
Soper: It’s pretty much an assault from beginning to end.
Murphy: I took it to Dan and nervously waited by my phone. Then I got an “Obsessed with this!” which is the highest form of praise from Dan Levy.
Levy: I was expecting a scratch-track, a basic idea of the song. And they went ahead and fully produced a banger!
Versteeg: I own a record label, and part of that is being able to hear when a song is a genuine, certified banger. The second I got the mix back from Chris, I was like, “If they don’t use it, they are literally deaf.”
Levy: It really felt like a moment from her past. It couldn’t sound too current, it had to live within the world of Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, people who were big in the early 2000s when Alexis would have been shooting this reality show. Annie just ran with it!
Murphy: I think the success is half people liking it and half it getting stuck in your head in such an intense way: “I guess I like this, or I’ll go insane.”
Levy: The cover art was really important. We got to dig in and say, ‘okay, what did singles look like back then? What was the font like, what kind of photo would they use?’ We had to ask Annie if she had sexy photos from her past, which fortunately she did! We worked with the CBC on it—Calum [Shanlin], who does social media for the Schitt’s Creek account, created [it].
Boyd: There was a moment, on the soundtrack chart, where it was sort of neck and neck with a bunch of the songs from A Star Is Born. I think it was number four, and the top three were all from A Star Is Born. That was a real “holy shit” moment. To be clear, it was there for maybe a week, but still!
Versteeg: A portion of the proceeds are getting donated to this really great Canadian organization called MusiCounts. It’s an organization that provides instruments and resources in schools that otherwise couldn’t afford music programs.
Levy: “A Little Bit Alexis” didn’t have the same overnight instant success that Noah’s “Simply The Best” had. It was a smaller detail in an episode, it wasn’t the climax of a storyline in the way Noah’s was, so you didn’t necessarily have the same rush of people desperately needing to find the song. The scene is 60 seconds long, and yet slowly but surely, the song has made its way onto people’s iTunes playlists and Spotify playlists and it’s been played in gay nightclubs across the world!
Murphy: I was in New York in December, and I was meeting a friend at a drag bar and had arrived early. One of the queens came up to me and said, “Just so you know, I’m about to do a DJ set where I play “A Little Bit Alexis,” and it goes into “Work Bitch,” so if that’s gonna be uncomfortable for you…” I was like, “I’m obviously staying for this!” The whole fucking bar was singing, like word for word, and dancing. And it was at that moment that my friend arrived. I had to be like, “I swear to God, I have not paid these people off. This is just a really fucking weird thing that’s happening to me right now.”
Dan: It’s always great when once in a while, somebody tweets footage from the inside of a very dark, steamy gay bar, and all you hear is “A Little Bit Alexis” thumping over the sound system. I’ve had situations with both Annie and Noah’s songs where I’ve been driving my car and I hear the song, and I look over and it’s the person in the car beside me, listening to it in their car on full blast! That’s been completely surreal and amazing.
Annie: I mean, I just performed with Kelly Clarkson on Kelly Clarkson’s talk show. In my wildest version of this, I never would have imagined that that would be happening. I knew I was going to be on her show, but I got a call about two days before from the producer asking, “Kelly was wondering if you’d consider performing ‘A Little Bit Alexis’ as a duet with her?” I was like “I’m sorry, did you just ask me if I would consider performing, with Kelly Clarkson, a song that I wrote?” It’s run away from me in the best way possible.
Dan: The song is ultimately a testament to Annie and her creativity and ingenuity as a performer, that she contributed in this way to the show, but also honestly to pop culture as a whole. We will all be listening to this song for years to come.
