So going off Coquet = flirt, Schtroumpf Coquet aka Vanity Smurf

ok this is kinda hc type stuff which is more about comics vanity I guess;

Even though Vanity is not interested in girls he flirts with Smurfette, because the thing is he flirts with just about everyone. Despite flirting with the other smurfs he’s not actually interested in any of them either because he doesn’t think any of them are good enough for him/he’s too good for them. No one can meet his high, high standards. So yeah, he flirts with them despite not being actually interested in them at all, and from what I’ve read this is completely in-line with being a coquet.

Because at the end of the day it’s all about him and his self-centredness. He wants other people to see him as KNOW he’s attractive, to be desirable. stuff like that

meanwhile in the cartoon he mostly just keeps to himself and obsesses over himself. he loves himself enough so can’t care too much what other smurfs might have to say about it. But let’s make one thing absolutely clear:

IF Vanity were to turn his charms on just about any of the other smurfs they would be helpless. By focusing so much on himself, the others are all spared his intensely bedazzling charms. The guy has the power but he CHOOSES not to use it. because as long as he has his reflection to look at he doesn’t need anything more

Le syndrome de la Schtroumpfette

En 1991, Katha Politt fait un constat lorsqu’il s’agit d'offrir un cadeau de Noël à sa fille de 3 ans : elle remarque la surreprésentation des protagonistes masculins dans toutes les œuvres de fiction. Elle prend comme exemple phare Les Schtroumpfs, bande dessinée dans laquelle on retrouve en tout et pour tout, une seule femme. A l’instar du grand Schtroumpf, du Schtroumpf dormeur, maladroit, grognon, à lunettes, coquet, gourmand, bricoleur, téméraire, la Schtroumpfette reste la seule représentation féminine dans un monde 100% masculin. De plus, on peut remarquer que sa personnalité est complètement effacée au profit de son genre. N’oublions pas que l’histoire initiale mentionne que la Schtroumpfette est placée dans le village dans le seul but de semer le trouble. 

Katha Politt consacre donc une tribune dans le New York Time, qu’elle titre «The Smurfette principle» (le syndrome/principe de la Schtroumpfette). Ainsi, le syndrome de la Schtroumpfette serait la surreprésentation volontaire ou inconsciente des personnages masculins dans les œuvres culturelles, allant au-delà du seul exemple des Schtroumpfs. Dans beaucoup de livres, films, bandes-dessinées, dessins animés, on observe une invisibilisation de la femme, noyée parmi une représentation excessive d’hommes. Ce schéma serait devenu un classique : un groupe d’hommes avec une seule femme, existant à travers l’homme et qui d’autant plus serait représentée de façon stéréotypée, oscillant entre femme-mère et femme-objet. 

«The message is clear. Boys are the norm, girls the variation; boys are central, girls peripheral; boys are individuals, girls types. Boys define the group, its story and its code of values. Girls exist only in relation to boys.»

«Le message est clair. Les garçons sont la norme, les filles la variation; les garçons sont centraux, les filles périphériques; les garçons sont des individus, les filles des types. Les garçons définissent le groupe, son histoire et son code de valeurs. Les filles n'existent que par rapport aux garçons.»

Ce profil est notamment récurrent dans le cinéma, faisant des personnages féminins «la» femme du film et non plus «une» femme parmi d’autres. Elle devient objet de curiosité, et un alibi antisexiste : «on en a mis une, c’est déjà ça !». Il faut arriver à contourner l’image de la femme-prétexte et faire rimer diversité avec multiplicité. La représentation des femmes dans les fictions ne doit pas être un quota à remplir, car ce syndrome de la Schtroumpfette mène à une normalisation de l’invisibilisation des femmes, et il ne faut pas oublier que 50% des Hommes sont des femmes. 

Ce qu’il est d’autant plus important de souligner, c’est que le sexisme déforme la vision des enfants, dès le plus jeune âge. Ces codes, ces ratios, ces quotas, sont d’autant plus présents dans les œuvres pour enfants, accentuant la normalisation de ces clichés. Comment faire comprendre à un enfant en train de former ses idées et sa propre perception du monde que l’homme et la femme sont égaux, si la seule chose qu’on lui montre, ce sont des livres, des films et des dessins animés composés de 90% de personnages masculins ?
