The recipient of our December Giving Tap is Father John's Animal House. Their overall mission is not only to place animals into loving homes, but to promote spay and neuter to alleviate the problem of homeless animals and overcrowded shelters. They value the bond people have with animals and they strive to give each homeless animal a family that will love and care for them for a lifetime. 🍻 Father John’s Animal House was founded in 1999 by a small and very dedicated group of people, that recognized a great need in our community to help homeless and otherwise unwanted pets. The land was originally overseen by Father John, a retired member of the clergy, who took exceedingly good care of his livestock. The shelter was named after him to honor his dedication to the welfare of animals. 🍻 The shelter now has the capacity to safely and responsibly place over 800 animals each year. Each animal is fully vetted, spayed or neutered, vaccinated and microchipped prior to leaving for their adoptive home. Their shelter personnel work hard to match each adoptive family with the perfect animal to become their lifelong pet. This year, Father John's also opened a low-cost spay/neuter clinic to further combat the ongoing pet homelessness issue. They seek to be a resource of information and service for the community to encourage responsible and committed pet ownership. 🍻 For the month of December, Father John's will receive $1.00 from every draft sold on our Giving Tap so that they can continue to support and service responsible pet ownership. 🍻 @fatherjohnsanimalhouse #kroghs #kroghbar #brewpub #brewpubnj #thegivingtap #drinkbeer #drinkbeeranddonate #donateforagoodcause #charity #foragoodcause #connectivity #lendahelpinghand #giveback #community #petownership #petadoption #shelterpets #resuepet #fureverhomes #handcraftbeer #handcraftbeernj #craftbeer #craftbeernj #lakemohawk #lakemohawknj #spartanj (at Krogh's Restaurant & Brew Pub) https://www.instagram.com/p/Clo7GZlvKyw/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Harper Mae: My “Adopt, don’t shop” story
I know I don’t have too many followers yet, but I thought I would share about one of the most amazing experiences of my life so far: adopting my dog. I know all too well how tempting it is for people to want to buy pure bred dogs, but I hope that maybe this story could help to change a few minds.
Back in November of 2018, my boyfriend and I started looking online for a dog to adopt. We wouldn’t have proper housing until January, but we were eager to find our perfect puppy. Since my bf was paying the adoption fee, he had first say in the breed. He had always dreamed of having a blue pit. There were thousands of pit bulls online, and while my reaction to almost every one of them was “omg look how cute!! It’s perfect!! I’m in love!!!”, my bf would look at it and be like “why do its eyes look like that?” It was the most frustrating thing I’ve experienced in our relationship. And it wasn’t that he didn’t like the other dogs...they just weren’t the one. We spent over a month looking at thousands of dogs, and finally we found her. The sweetest pittie I’d ever seen, with gorgeous golden honey eyes.
We had quite a few hoops to jump through, but we were finally approved and, before we knew it, it was time to meet her. Now, the shelter that we got her from was a privately owned shelter. Right away, we realized that maybe this shelter wasn’t the most reputable. When the lady opened up the trunk of the suv, Harper of course was really excited. She was wriggling around and whining, excited to be at a new place (obviously). But then, the lady starts PUNCHING THE CAGE!! Yelling at her to shut up!!! It was appalling!! So we get her inside, and of course Harper is exstatic. She’s all over the place and sniffing around and running up to us, just the cutest ball of joy you’d ever seen. And this lady continues to yell at her about getting on the furniture, even after we told her that it was ok. Long story short, all goes relatively well with the introduction and we get to keep her (for a foster period initially).
Immediately, I noticed that she was in poor health. She was half bald in most spots, completely bald on her head, had terrible rashes and blisters, and her eyes were red all the time. She also had constant diarrhea and would vomit often. She wasn’t too underweight, just by a few pounds, but she hardly had any muscle. Her skin was so sensitive that when we bought her first gentle lead, which fit loosely, it still blistered and bled. We ended up having to buy a heavy duty, extra padded one. The lady from the shelter told us that her condition was a result of the stressful shelter environment. I worked for a while at a dog daycare, and was aware that this was a possibility. I was worried that she had something else wrong though. We took her to the vet, they didn’t do much, but gave her some meds and a special shampoo.
We switched her to the best food we could find, took her hiking several times a week, used her meds and shampoo as directed, and even gave her MCT oil for the first couple of weeks. It didn’t take long before she was strong and healthy :)
She still sometimes just throws up randomly. I think she may just have IBS. We plan on taking her to a different vet soon (one that will actually run some tests for us). She’s got a few behavioral issues (she’s aggressive towards all other animals), but is making gradual process. I couldn’t be happier with my fur baby. She’s the most loving animal I’ve met. She always has to be in the middle, never lets you travel anywhere alone (not even to the kitchen), she loves to shake, high five, and loves to join us on all of our adventures. And talk about a personality! She loves to talk to us, hates when the weather is above 70 (and will literally throw herself around in a tantrum while on walks in said weather), and she lives up to the whole “nanny dog” image. She adores the neighborhood kids. She’s an incredibly loving animal, and the way she looks at my bf and I makes me feel that she’s thankful. There’s never a dull moment, and never a moment where I regret choosing her.
I can’t help but think about her past. She was in the shelter for about 7 months when we found her, and before that she was a stray. She’s about 4 years old. We know nothing about her past. It could have been good. It could have been bad. But one thing is for sure, for my baby, her shelter experience was not good.
In just the few months that we’ve had her she has completely transformed. And almost every time we’re out on a walk people stop me to tell me how beautiful she is. It hurts my heart that so many shelter animals get overlooked because of their looks. Pets are so much more than an image. They are our life partners. They love unconditionally. All you have to do is give them a loving environment and, in return, they’ll give you every part of themselves. I’m currently typing this with my 50 pound dog lying on my arms and chest. It might be an inconvenience, but it’s her favorite place to be.
I will preach “adopt, don’t shop” until the day I die.
