I would be super fascinated to learn more about how Peglar's views re. If humans get to be people why can't I, affects his relationship with Bridgens - and really just about how they came to be in/navigate through that relationship. aw thank you this au really is my brain going "crack treated seriously" and somehow making This and im glad other ppl enjoy it too. i have a lot of thoughts on this in terms of how much history to keep and how much to disregard so its under the cut:

so apparently in the book (which i have not read and do not plan to read) bridglar met on the hms beagle and as far as i can tell thats completely made up bc peglar was sailing w the east india company at the time.

then theres the show weirdness of bridgens being like in his 50s/60s when irl bridgens was in his 20s and this makes more sense bc as far as i can tell the position of steward was usually one reserved for younger men so for 50smth bridgens to be jfj's steward is a little odd and esp odd if hes a human in a position that is typically meant for cat/dogboys so my logic for this is that either 1) jfj requested bridgens to be his steward or 2) bridgens requested to be jfj's steward and either option would mean giving bridgens and jfj a slightly closer relationship than what they have in show canon which is fine that just means peglar and bridgens likely met during the first opium war but then how they met is still a mystery bc peglar would be aboard the wanderer with hodgson and bridgens would be on the cornwallis/clio with jfj so like ???

POINT BEING for all the reasons above ive handwaved away exactly how they meet but AT SOME POINT they do meet during the first opium war. peglar was the one who initiated the relationship tho the two of them did have mutual feelings for each other before committing to anything and bridgens is deffo the kinda guy who would go all "i would love you no matter what species you are" and actually mean it and peglar. ok so. i have a lot of thoughts about peglar.

so irl peglar was lashed for drunkeness and mutinous conduct while serving with the east indian company and for catboy peglar i like to imagine that travelling to places where cat/dogboys arent treated the way they are treated in england really opened his eyes and his mind to the idea of being treated like a person and this is obviously not a mindset that human officers want him to have and hence why he was lashed. he then served on the wanderer fighting against the slave trade and thats another chance to see a different type of human-to-cat/dogboy relationship even if he wouldnt have had as many opportunities to live amongst the locals as he did while with the east india company. and peglars like, smart. part of the reason why bridgens falls in love w him is bc of his intelligence and cheek and wit and peglar knows that britiannia's "civilizing mission" is bogus because while they are trying to abolish slavery on one hand they are also actively enforcing Company rule in India on the other and bc peglar has seen both sides of that he has Thoughts about it, Thoughts he didnt dare share with anyone until bridgens coaxed it out of him and to his surprise bridgens agreed with him.

bridgens, being well read and well educated, also knows that the way england treats cat/dogboys is the exception and not the rule and really like cherishes peglar and loves him like truly loves him and is thus completely aware of and careful of their uneven power dynamic here and wouldve never been the first to initiate anything for that very reason. and its not easy to navigate this forbidden relationship but peglar makes it worth it and both of them did worry that maybe this was merely a maritime romance but in the months between the war and the expedition they managed to sneak in lowkey dates on land and found that they were still very much compatible and it really makes things all the more tragic that bridgens cant afford to adopt peglar outright and ensure that henry lives out the rest of his days in peace curled up next to the fire with a good book and smiling whenever he catches john staring at him and god, they are so in love.

hey not rly a question just saying i appreciate your 2cents on things generally. i am a gnc transfem but am really a boy more than anything so someone looking out for those of us who arent palettably feminine is rly cool of you. a lot of the stuff you mentioned in your long post just now hits at some of the stuff thats making me feel uneasy around some of my transfem friends. i fear if i was fully myself i wouldnt be accepted. i hate to feel too queer for fellow queers, but. but yea anyway most of the time ive known i was trans most of my friends had actually been trans guys so when i hear this anti transmasc rhetoric going around it makes me rly uncomfortable im sick of the idea that trans guys have it easy. its not true and not fair do you fear being not accepted by others like you too? is this normal? idk. i didnt feel this when i came out 5 years ago this is new to me

I’m really sorry you’re dealing with that, and I can relate. Essentially I came out as a binary trans person a decade ago and raced to transition as quickly as possible (it was not fast, it was slow and frustrating) and when I finally got there then I had to endure Gender Crisis 2 where I realized I wasn’t this binary gender either.

It was very difficult to sort out. Did I just not feel special enough as Gender 2? Was I faking this whole time and was really just cis? Was I detransitioning? It took a lot to figure out what I wanted, how I wanted to be seen, and to grapple with the idea that it will continue to fluctuate.

I am masc but do not consider myself a man. Boy, maybe. Do I see myself as a woman? Also no. Girl, maybe. But a masculine girl. I think my boyness is more feminine than my girlness…but still both…butch.

I am trans but not a trans woman or a trans man. While figuring myself out in round two I flirted with transmasc/transfemme as labels, but neither fit better than the other. Or maybe neither fit. I know some use transfemmemasc but idk that I like it for me. I use trans women’s shaving tips. I use trans men’s voice training tips. There are members of both camps who wouldn’t consider me one of them.

I currently work a full-time job. I cannot present or fluctuate in my presentation when I want to. We have gendered locker rooms, gendered bathrooms, my ID badge has a photo that doesn’t look like me. I think a lot about that post that’s like “I might be nonbinary but I have a job so I can’t worry about that right now.” Only, I already know I am nonbinary. I’ve already been out to a lot of people IRL. How do you put that cat back in the bag? Can you? If I was allowed to present how I want now and everyone was cool…will they still be understanding when it swings back the other way? I don’t want that sort of pressure at work.

I am lucky I have a partner who understands and likes my presentation—and spectrum of it. I have trans friends who understand or try to understand, and genderweird friends who get it. It is a bit isolating—how everything is split into one camp or another. Things I supposedly couldn’t relate to I do, things I am not meant to have experienced (or acknowledge I experience) are not welcome topics in trans discourse.

It is difficult! There are huge Boy v Girl (but make it progressive) pissing contests on tumblr and it’s very irritating how deep the anger goes. Carve room for yourself and you’re accused of belonging to the other camp, as if it really even is ‘the other’ camp, it’s the same fucking camp.

I started to identify with the word butch only in the last few years, and because my gender exploration had taken me back to the trans folks of yore. They were brash and bold and contradictory and I liked that! It made me yearn for vague labels and defiant privacy while also being unabashedly authentic! Then I learned that it still exists. It’s small, and got pushed to the fringes, sure. But I’ve only had access to the books and zines and tales of the genderweird from the internet, and to hear it resonate with so many others proves to me we’re still out there.

It’s very tough to want to be true to yourself when there is a constant pressure to conform to something. It’s doubly tough when that pressure comes from other trans people. But finding more and more people who live this way and feel this way makes me feel surer in my choice to just loudly be what I am, fuck the rest, whenever I can.

I cannot always look how I want or be seen how I want, so the spaces where I do have control I refuse to be anything other than what I am 110%

I really hope you can find more and more space that lets you exist in the grey. I hope your friends become more accepting. In the meantime and hopefully continuously in tandem—you are not alone in this experience and others out there understand what it’s like. ❤️

The second time I thought I loved the boy, but he was just using me and tried to push me to have sex with him and when i told him no that i didnt want to, he broke up with me and went back to his ex.

Did it hurt? Like hell. Did i get over it, yes i did.

The most IMPORTANT thing is to not get in your head about the timing. You know how many times i've heard "Oh you're in college now you're gonna start having sex with so many people it doesn't matter" ? Too many to count.

Personally for me the reason that I'm so into the story telling part of my writings and don't really like writing on-shot smut is because I personally don't believe that is what sex is all about. It's about showing love to someone, not to prove something to yourself or others.

This does not mean that I judge ANYONE for having a sex life with random people, it's just not what ME personally likes to do.

But if you want my advice, you can only chose yourself when, who and how you want to start exploring with that kind of stuff. NEVER let yourself be pressured by the society standard or even the shit you read on here because it can drain you and push you into something you are not ready for.

Trust me when i say you will regret it if you allow yourself to be pushed into something you arent comfortable with. Always be true to yourself and YOUR BELIEFS no matter what anyone tells you

I saw someone talking about how with the scenes added in the ebook and with the scenes in the ongoing side story, with emphasis on that one scene where LHH talks about the heroine of ORV, DokSoo might become canon. And while they did mention that they read the side story, I thought that that particular scene pretty much sunk many ships?

oh boy ngl i was a bit reluctant answering this ask but imo this is just fans' wishful thinking rather than singshong walking through a doksoo route.

the doksoo scenes added to the ebook arent really so fundamental to the point that theyre the closest ship to become canon. in fact I'd say that the main reason to make them canon would be that it's a (well-developed) straight ship tbh. in the 1863rd turn, theres an added smoking-on-the-roof scene. kdj tries smoking and immediately has a coughing fit. hsy asks him if she did well in this round. this added scene is a direct parallel to kdj telling her that she did well during the enemy of the story arc

another scene is during kaizenix. yjh and kdj decide to try the romance route and bcs yuri was in love with ricardo, it's kdj who writes the letter "write a story that's for me and me alone" this is also a foreshadowing to what we learn in the epilogue lol. to expand more on kaizenix, we also have yjh telling kdj that his writing skills are terrible despite him reading so much, kdj tells him that with his face he certainly didnt have any problems with courting. yjh then goes on a thinking tangent about how he could not care less about the looks of someone he likes (and we know who is called ugly throughout the book)

as for the lhh part where he talks about orv's heroine (kdj's love interest in this context) he is 100% not referring to han sooyoung. he says that the character he had in mind didnt have as much screentime as the other leads. the main women in orv when it comes to screentime are hsy jhw uriel and ysa. going by lhh's logic and IF his words represent singshong's stance, then hsy is immediately ruled out. i also wouldn't consider jhw for the role either, not only bcs i didnt really see their scenes with a romantic undertone but also why would singshong write kdj's romantic interest love someone else (lhs) romantically?

with uriel, unless you consider kdj/uriel to be a direct parallel to 999yjh/999uriel then i dont think shes The candidate either. now for ysa, im a bit iffy when it comes to her bcs sure she doesnt have as much as screentime as lets say yoohankim but shes also not someone you would consider neglected (like lsh for example) also i genuinely think that romance would undermine doksang's bonds. i think theyre so good BECAUSE theyre platonic

singshong have told us in multiple ways that orv is not a story about a canon romance so you can interpret the ending however you want just dont mis-label the novel's genre (this includes both het and gay romance). plus i just dont think they would shoot themselves on the foot and risk "angering" the largest active part of the fandom (general statement). i dont want to sound arrogant but you cant deny that joongdok shippers are the backbone of orv fandom and joongdok artists have been the only ones to be recruited to promote orv. alter (the official artist before blackbox) is a danmei artist, blackbox is a joongdok shipper, haban (taiwanese release cover artist) has a danmei history, the artist of the simplified cn version release has jd porn on their twitter and so on. certainly singshong are aware that orv didn't get this big bcs some guy recommended it in solo leveling's comment sections

speaking of guys, not every dudebro out there ships doksoo anw, some like doksang, some dont ship anything. the same can be said about the female audience too. not everyone ships joongdok. some ship doksoo, some yoohankim, some nothing thats not canon. im not part of the latest group since i could not care less about a ship's canon status lol

That’s just how it is and I’m not gonna change my mind on that. So with that being said, ig I’m “proship” in the sense that you CAN ship something cuz nothing is stopping you, but I REALLLLLY don’t think you should because you shouldn’t romanticize something like a child/adult relationship (and to those in the sp fandom or my followers, I’m talking to you randy/stan and kenny/his siblings shippers.) I know that there are many reasons people write about dark or gross topics, including trauma coping . It can be good to help shine light on a serious experience or topic, such as sexual content involving minors, rape, abuse or incest, which should not be left in the dark. It’s how you handle it that really matters, which can vary, as there is no one way to do it. The bottom line is that none of that stuff is “cute” or “romantic.” For example, let’s say you like the movie “Thirteen”. I believe that movie tackles serious topics in an honest manner that gets its point across without featuring child porn. Not to mention that the movie was actually co-written by a 14 year old girl sharing some of her experiences, which shows the purpose of the movie. However, if you are an adult and like the movie because you like the scene of Tracy and Evie kissing, two 13 year old girls in a heavily toxic friendship, and you find it “cute,” I’m going to assume weird things about you. Or let’s say you like the book “Lolita” for its insight into the mind of a predator. Now compare that to liking the book because you too find Dolores attractive, and you relate to the pedophile. I know these probably arent the best examples, but hopefully this clears some things up a bit. A lot of the time it’s not the media’s fault, it’s how people view it, so I don’t believe in censorship. Like banning “The Catcher in The Rye” because one guy read it and killed John Lennon is stupid. But at the same time, look more closely at the media you are consuming. Think of the movie “Cuties”. Sure, the director claims in was not made to exploit children, but definitely exploits children by using suggestive angles of their child actors twerking. And guess what? Pedos loved it, even if that wasn’t the intention. What I’m trying to say is be unapologetic, but don’t cater to those who gain a certain gratification from it either. For the love of god, normalize a topic, but don’t NORMALIZE IT in the way it’s viewed as okay.

My absolute favourite side character is the pastor. He's just some guy . I would trust him with my life. Wdym he just went "uhhh yeah god and stuff" to make sure Kaneeka /and Avery think that's what we're talking about. "Firm parenting moment" and it's please be good or we might skip storytime. I cannot wait to see more of him

My favourite traits have got to be street smart and keen eye, though book smart and powerful build arent far behind. I just love lying to people and eavesdropping . But the muscle-weirdo stuff powerful build does and additional information book smart grants are really cool also

As for combos, I think it's the same, keen eye and street smart are amazing together . Though maybe it's just because the MC who has them is my favourite. I'm going for a playthrough that gets both of these and book smart, and so far it's also been very fun so book smart/keen eye seems fun, and so does street smart/powerful build with all the bullshit it allows me to pull

man. thinking about how the survivors all desperately need new hobbies

like. okay. sonia’s a great example. off the top of your head what are her hobbies? probably learning about and researching true crime and the occult, and watching j-dramas/anime, right? but if you really think about it, her fascination with japanese culture very much feels like her just desperately wanting to fit in and massively overcompensating. so while i do think she probably enjoys those shows, theyre definitely not as popular in her kingdom as she claims (not that im saying she’s lying on purpose, just that. well, when you feel embarrassed about someones reaction to you liking something, sometimes you’ll try to make an excuse for why you do yknow), and plus, its not like they have access to a lot of entertainment media for a while post program. as for the occult/true crime stuff…

look me in the eye and tell me junko did not use that against her. do you really think junko enoshima would not see a girl obsessed with the study of serial killers and not try and warp that into a fascination with her?

i think that stuff leaves a bad taste in her mouth now. and after committing and being complicit in the committing of the kind of crimes she used to be fascinated by, its kind of hard to find the joy in that anymore, yknow? the occult stuff could maybe still be enjoyable, but with how often it feels like there are ghosts lurking around every fucking corner and her dreams are filled with screaming corpses its kinda hard to be fanciful about that stuff.

its not much better for the others, either. akanes hobbies were basically working out, doing parkour, eating, and sleeping. the first two are downright impossible for the first several months after waking up, and for the foreseeable future any kind of physical activity is going to be, to an extent, difficult just due to how much chronic pain and weakness she’ll probably suffer the rest of her life. she can get to a healthier weight and a stronger muscular build, but its not going to change the fact that she gets out of breath and sore much faster than before. as for eating… well. thats gonna be a sore subject for a while. so all she has left is sleeping, and sleeping all day is, as ive been told by many people, kind of a depression symptom? and theres no way the others would sit back and let her do that.

kazuichi, from what we can tell, had a few more normal hobbies. in game you can find him gaming with chiaki, and he seems to enjoy coming up with schemes and plans for silly stuff, but overall he just loves his tinkering. he may be the ultimate mechanic but first and foremost he just loves fucking with machines and engines and finding out what makes them tick. but even that isnt gonna work anymore. sure, he could game. if they had any fucking consoles. or a working computer network. or any games. but none of that is happening for a while, if ever. as for his tinkering, it’s gotta be a similarly sore subject to sonia’s training and tutoring as a princess. its too closely linked to what he did as a despair, too closely linked to his talent, to not make him feel like screaming when he smells machine polish. i think he definitely could get back to a point where it genuinely brings him joy again, and before that he definitely forces himself to use his talent and knowledge because they need it, but. its a complicated problem.

he probably had hobbies before the Horrors. right? he probably played some video games, maybe liked martial arts films, maybe sketched in the margins of his notebooks. rode his bike sometimes. but now? nothing keeps his interest that long. everything becomes monotonous after a while, and sure, sometimes thats the draw. with stuff like fiber crafts the point is sometimes making it muscle memory so you have something to do with your hands. but other times its not. and his ability to basically excel in most things you put in front of him has to be so fucking boring after a while. a lot of the point of having hobbies is that you arent perfect. the draw is learning, is getting better. even reading can become nothing when any nonfiction book has knowledge in it you already know and any fiction book you can intuit the ending from the first few pages. he probably reads Lightning Fast now too, so it cant hold his interest for long.

he probably has to constantly be switching hobbies and outlets. cant stay on one thing too long, or the ennui starts to set in. that sounds miserable.

I thought on it, slept on it, and am drinking coffee on it, and I think I decided I'm not going to do multiple books for each character. I know, I know, it's maddening that I change my mind so often, but I need you guys to realize that my mental health is getting severely worse as the years pass, and the absolute last thing I need is a complete tsunami of stress of having to take on 7 books at once.

It would be great to have a series for each character, but it's also very unrealistic for me specifically as a person. I am very much so mentally disabled, I legit get a full-fledged panic attack if I get out of bed too quickly to make coffee. Like. Legit. That happens at least twice a week.

I think it would be a very good idea to just have a continuation of FMOD as a whole, it will relieve a tremendous amount of stress off my shoulders, and I think it would be very very interesting considering FMOD started so long ago, and my writing has progressively gotten better, it would be very cool to see how much I've changed as a writer.

I just have SO many ideas for FMOD, and I can't possibly cram them all into 45-50 chapters. I have a lot planned, and if it means I have to freaking go to a psychic, use a Ouija board, pray for guidance, worship satan, and sacrifice a lamb for advice and comfort to the mind for the series, then goddammit I will.

oh man oh man I'm soooo fucking excited to FINALLY run this campaign after soooo many years. think I'm going with the mortally coiled offshoot one rather than The Pit only because The Pit really needs a non-DnD playbook to work right + it still needs a TON of work

but anyways here's some of the things I'm planning hehehe

first session starts out with a basic "local tavern has a rat infestation in the basement" quest. except when the party goes down to clear them out. those are not rats. the tavern has an infestation of crawling claws. the first combat of the campaign is against a swarm of undead severed hands

bigger plot is revealed via finding out who the FUCK put crawling claws in the basement. VERY suspicious wizard has been chilling in the corner reading some books and hightails it out of there it when he realizes that the crawling claws are all dead

one book is left behind. if the players try to read it it's revealed that theres some sort of enchantment on it preventing them from reading it (text always appears in a language they dont know ie if one player sees it in infernal but the player that can speak infernal sees it in orcish etc etc). if they try to dispel it somehow all the text will just be Gone

two major leads- big cemetery where the hands were probably sourced from + wizard library the book came from (the language thing meant to be an anti-theft measure since the books arent ever supposed to leave the tower)

if they go to the cemetery: they get ambushed by a group of mercenaries in bright-colored robes/armor, mimicking the uniform of an old specialized strike team for a long-dead empire that shouldnt exist anymore

if they go to the wizard library: they find out that the suspicious wizard has a workaround to the anti-book theft enchantments, and that they were researching a REALLY weird combo of magic, including shit like self-necromancy, identifying + tracking extraplanar beings, item duplication, etc

if the party follows the wizard to private/restricted floors, they find out that he's working under another guy (its rasputin)

reviving an old dmpc of mine, Ward. not sure whether im keeping him as a cleric or swap over to druid. he's following a god of chance so ill roll a dice at the beginning of each session to see if he shows up or not. big plans for this fucker

oh also it turns out that rasputin is trying to revive the dead empire from earlier and the guys with bright colored armor keep showing up. its the children of unseeing eyes

lots of other shit happens and they meet gazer who's pretending to be a golden dragonborn despite being a lizardfolk

gazer turns out to be rasputin's apprentice surprise surprise

rasputin's bbeg plan is revealed that he's hunting down and killing minor gods/spirits with a special godkiller dagger to add to their own power

gazer eventually grows to hate rasputin and tries to usurp his plan by taking it FURTHER. there's a magic artifact he's tracking down thats supposed to let him reshape reality

finds it. gazer + party + whoever else is present gets sucked into a mind prison hellscape where theyre in the suburbs while their bodies slowly die of thirst

they break out. maybe they ally with gazer because they all trauma bond together in the suburbia hellzone. maybe they kill him. either way they eventually take down rasputin

yes, the options all suck. yes, the other ones change the balance a lot, but they both threaten the balance of your team in unexpected ways and punish other teams for either potential hard work into making their players play well / just having a rough or unlucky season.

as a thieves fan, we werent expecting to win in the slightest. those more in tune with FK and stats in the discord were already logging off expecting us to lose in the semifinals. how we beat the wings is still a mystery to me, but what im trying to get to is that we love our team regardless. we have sucked majorly for the past 12 seasons or so and this is our first win since season 9 when we were immediately cursed afterwards.

but we all still love each other and our players. we havent even gotten to lore all of our new guys yet but we still love em all. regardless of how good or bad they are, regardless of if were middle of the pack as per usual or of were the season champions. we love our team.

yes, star inflation sucks. yes, team scope creep is a real problem. we get it. weve been dealing with having good (but usually not good enough) players for a while. having shadows players that come out after a delacing and immediately have one of the worst seasons on the books ever.

but we dont want to lose each other again. we dont want to be punished by those who we care for and those who care for us by having all of the players weve grown to love over this new ripped away from us already.

so please, from your season 1 gamma champs (or at least this guy who feels strongly about this topic): open the book again. we can take whatever they throw at us. many teams, one league.

both companies need to stop relying on the old stars/ old wrestlers needing either a money hit or a cash hit or like another grasp at talent. as much as I LOVE daddy ass and re-living my childhood in wrestling but like I get sooo tired of seeing people relive the glory days when they shouldnt *cough* ric flair *cough*. like theres sooo many talented younger wrestlers that arent getting shown on TV/ in the companies because older wrestlers get quick pops because of the nostalgia run. I see goldberg one more time I will actually explode.

Aew needs to book more womens matches and treat them at the same like bundle and preface as men! Like give us a womans blood and guts!! and more womens matches in genearal where its more of a rough and tumble vibe with blood. My favourite womens match is the thunder rosa brit baker cage match!! Also give me more nyla like I love nyla rose sooo much and shes so talented and cool and I wanna see her wrestle more

also things that feel like "small" tag teams, like the best friends, arent being like shown how talent they are. I know that sentence doesnt make sense. But re-watching aew during the pandemic era- where you had the trent vs kenny match it was so good and it really showwed just how cool and talented trent is in the ring and I think both him and chuck should be allowed to wrestle more and actually wrestle like do moves and win matches, theyre not just to push other talent or let newer tag teams win, its kinda depressing when taented wrestlers arent used in the way they deserve too

another thing and this is just for me, maybe this is just for me. Like long term storytelling suddenly either being shifted/stopped. Like do you remember when mox was facing [I think its either max or jericho] and someone like attacked him backstage and we NEVER EVER got told/figured out who attacked him and its kinda just been forgotten? ALSO as much as I love the elite and the hangkenny storyline and hangman rejoining the elite. He caused so much issues and trouble with everything and he hurt them, like matt said that bte episode "it hurt my heart" and theyve all like, just kinda accpeted him back. No like deep apology or "you have to prove yourself" or whatever. Its like they forgot the entire three year story they told. Also kenny finding out about the fucking nod- it could have been done so much deeper and sadder and emotional, the bucks have been there with kenny since his breakdown/breakup with kota and theyve always had his back until the one moment he needed them and they sided with hangman. But instead of all of that we got "k its cool" and I dont know if its gonna like come back up after all the kenny dealing with callis emotions is gone. Cuz thats gotta like fuck someone up mentally, suddenly loosing that abusive manipultive hold on you suddenly disappearing.

and FANS!! like, I love wrestling fans but also god I hate them so much. Guys, Guys I am begging y'all to stop showing wrestlers fanfics/ship-fanart and everything else. its not like made FOR them its made FOR other fans. ive played a decent number of dating sims in my life, and this is my least favorite. i played through davesprites route and then resolutely decided i wouldnt bother playing any more. there are too many fucking characters, there arent really any choices, and the whole thing is just a drag. i tried looking up walkthroughs or playthroughs for the purpose of this recap, but i found nothing bc of how unpopular/how little time this game was available for. i was unfamiliar with all characters except the cousin, teh ship thing i GUESS? nad obviously the hs characters. this did not help anything. i think davesprites route was probably the most interesting one anyway.

Paradox Space

i owned this book, i think. i know when i first read the comic i read the physical version. its in storage now, so i just reread it thru the collection. its still really good. i didnt realize hussie had actually written some of the comics. its funny, and parts of it are really great bonus material or commentary on hs.

summerteen romance surprisingly enough holds up for me as both comedic genius and a surprisingly sincere commentary on hivebent and karkats feelings about it on the meteor trip. mister seven remains my favorite comic, but the last one with vriska and equius was particularly powerful, leaning into a chaotic art style that really emphasized vriskas desperation and incoherence as she lost more and more blood. it made me think of what arkham asylum by grant morrison wanted to be. in general though, there are a lot of genuinely really sweet and funny moments in the comic as a whole. i think i loved it more on my reread than i did on my first read.

Jailbreak

jailbreak is a short comic with one splitting track (with no real consequence) wherein a guy tries to escape from jail with some other guys. if i recall, this one is entirely based off of reader suggestions, so its really random and all over the place. its also very characteristic of hussies earlier era humor.

i remember loving it the first time i read it, but honestly? a lot of the jokes were just kind of distressing on my reread. the dark humor just really isnt my thing anymore i guess. its just kind of... gross now.

still, it has a lot of influence on jokes in homestuck. lord jack's entire jail sequence is like, a direct riff off of this comic. this is also where the what pumpkin joke comes from, and the porno sword. the elf saw a penis and began to cry meme is from this comic.

Bard Quest

hussies incomplete short comic. this is where she really experimented with splitting tracks. however, unlike in homestuck and jailbreak, none of them are resolved, which can result in a clunky narrative where you just have too many damn tabs open.

this is very obviously where the codpiece thing started.

Albums

once youve finished homestuck, hiveswap acts 1 and 2 ost unlock, as well as the friendsim ost, a "grubbles" album based off of the fictional hiveswap band, and the final "beyond canon" album.

Hiveswap OST

im a sucker for the hiveswap soundtrack, absolutely. act one especially is fantastic. but the real highlight of this album is toby and james's track commentary. they bicker back and forth and joke around in the notes, and honestly, its fucking hysterical. act 2 is also good, but it doesnt have any of the commentary.

The Grubbles

its good! it has a nice, consistent sound, and the tracks are pretty solid. its very short, though, and i dont have a ton to say about it.

Friendsim OST

the reality is that everything james roach makes is pretty fire. some of the commentary on this albums really interesting, also. i really like M O I S T and >tfw another james roach song, i think theyre some of the most powerful tracks in terms of atmosphere. however, service car is definitely my favorite. its just so funky.

Beyond Canon

something i think is interesting about beyond canon is that its largely new artists. in all of the previous hs albums, you got the sense that a lot of the musicians knew each other and worked together or listened to each others work, and as a result, you really see them build off of each other. there are so many repeating sounds and motifs, with people constantly remixing each others works, or sticking to similar themes in instruments or sounds- ie; favoring piano in songs about john, whatever. theres a distinct sound to those early albums where you listen and youre like, oh yeah, this is a homestuck album.

i dont get that with beyond canon. it doesnt reference any older stuff. these arent recognizable artists whove influenced homestuck for ages. its all new.

robert j, one of like four returning artists, says this in the track commentary:

about five months ago i was contacted to be a part of the homestuck 2 music team and was told the lowdown: it was a clean slate, and a chance to establish the musical rockbed for homestuck 2 going forward. no quotes of hs1 songs whatsoever, but we'd be making new songs TO quote

which pretty much backs up everything i said. and i get the purpose of something like this, but it does present a challenge for new musicians because theyre working without the same base for nostalgia. the fact that there isnt a ton of really distinct musical diversity in this album, with a lot of it relying on a very electronic sound to the point where i originally thought the album was themed, rather than a supposed new start for this new era of homestuck, also may be challenging when moving forward with new albums.

idk. its a fine album, the songs are fine, but nothing about it really sticks out to me.

Final Thoughts

anyway, all thats left now is to reread problem sleuth, and then i can uninstall this massive fucking thing. i might replay the games, or reread the post canon stuff eventually, but the light is shining at the end of the tunnel at last

no, but you can be forgiven for thinking that, and if you'll indulge some poorly remembered and needlessly minute comic history ill explain why.

so the original robin is dick grayson, a circus boy who lost his parents in an accident that was later revealed to be a mob hit. Batman adopted him in an attempt to keep him off the streets, and through a series of lightheartedly contrived circumstances he came to become robin, named after robin hood. This who 99.999% of people are thinking of when they think robin

robin's popularity would inspire a number of sidekicks across DC's stable, who in turn would inspire a teammup book dedicated to the sidekicks called the titles teen titans

now, fast forward many years to the 80s, the teen titans are relaunched under famed marvel team marv wolfman and georg perez, and go on to become one of the single most popular things happening in comics at the time. This approximate lineup is who 99% of people are thinking about when they think of the teen titans

now it's critical to remember two things about this particular moment in time. 1) since he was busy with the titans, robin was not appearing in batman at the time. 2) 80s and 90s DC was far more anal retentive about continuity than they had been historically or would go on to be in the modern age proper. The batman team at the time really wanted the robin character back, but the powers that be would not let the boy wonder appear in two books at once, lest the continuity become too confusing. Despite their pleas to get dick back, the new teen titans was simply too popular a book to cancel, and dick grayson too integral a part of it be shipped off. Eventually, a compromise was met: the batman team would get robin, the teen titans would keep dick grayson

The batman team would create a new character, Jason todd, who would become the new robin. Jason todd was, get this, a circus boy who lost his parents in an accident that was later revealed to be a mob hit. He also looked like this:

So hopefully you can see why I'd forgive you for mixing the two up.

I cannot emphasize enough how much the fans at the time fucking hated this character. DC got hatemail over him for years afterwards, even long after the attempts to give him an actual backstory in the first big crisis (that reboot is where his "real" origin story of the stealing tires off the batmobile comes from btw). It got so crazy that DC held a big event where fans could vote on the outcome of a storyline in batman.

and they voted to kill the guy!

Jason was brutalized by the joker and went on to die in an explosion. this would have long term implications on batman, his characterization, and his story line for decades to come, becoming one of the most iconic moments in comic history. he'd get namedropped every few years when the writers needed a justification for bruce making an ass of himself to manufacture cheap drama. This would culminate in his appearance in hush as a murderous vigilante seeking revenge on batman for not avenging his death

This "appearance" (it was actually clayface fucking with batman) would be wildly popular, to the point DC ended up incorporating red hood into the main continuity. He would appear regualrly in the batbooks after that, either as a rogue for batman to fight or a hero in his own right, eventually accruing a strong fanbase and a permanent spot on the roster.

on a personal note, red hood fucking sucks and i hate him. He's edgy and boring and DC can't decide what they want him to be. His core audience is dorks who take themselves too seriously to actually enjoy batman, but whos taste is so childish they still need a character whos like 99.99999% percent batman. On the flip side, tumblr fangrils have woobified him to the point that his core appeal of murdering badguys and being a shithead have been completely eroded, and now he's just yet another wayne prettyboy who eats up page space that could have been given to a character with actual merits. His most popular runs were written by a sex pest, and his most iconic appearance wasn't even actually him. i wish DC would just kill the bastard off for good, but he's so deeply ingratiated into the batman books that we'll never be rid of the bastard.

#so yeah thats the breakdown of whos who #personally i think red hoods years of being an interesting character worth keeping around are far behind him #but he's popular now so we're stuck with him

just finished she who became the sun! (historical... light fantasy? reimagination of the rise to power of the first ming emperor, but what if he was actually a girl in disguise. also there are ghosts so i cant really call it historical fiction i think?)

it hit a lot of the beats i enjoy in fantasy books - girl disguised as a boy (Shocker there lol) who has to work twice as hard at school/training/whatever, military strategy, alternating povs with an antagonist - and i liked reading it.

i do think the tone jumped around a little bit (eg i dont think the fairly explicit sex scene in the middle meshed well with the general YA vibe of the rest of it lol) & i wasnt super content w how the main antagonists story ended.

3.5/5? i liked it, i enjoyed reading it, but i dont think ill reread it. also i dont think one set of stars is a useful metric for me i think i need like. a writing/worldbuilding one, an enjoyment one, and an concept one? and maybe one for "is it actually good" bc there are many books id rate 5/5 for enjoyment that simply arent good lol. maybe ill do a monster factory style rating for each book thats its own metric.

in which case: 4/5 historical c-dramas about the rise to power of a pretty ruthless emperor- but gay!

and for indiv aspects:

concept: overarching ideas and/or tropes

context: looking at the concept from a meta & critical perspective

execution: writing, pacing, worldbuilding technicalities, etc.

enjoyment: what it says on the tin

concept: 5/5 - as i said above. genderfuckery and military campaigns and politics.

context: 2.5/5- not a huge fan of making historical figures gay instead of either making up ur own guys Or writing abt real historical gay people

execution: 3/5- didnt notice the writing either way, pacing was good but tone drifted a bit.

enjoyment: 4/5- good, but didnt grab me and i dont think ill reread it.

that seems like usable metrics. ill do that going forward.
