why did u disable reblogs for that post its so good i need to share it :(( thank u
i'm sorry, but i turned of reblogs on this post because i made it like 8 or 9 years ago, when i was less educated on trans-inclusive language. while my intentions and the message i intended to convey were good, i regret how i worded that post - most especially because it recently started to circulate in radfem and terf circles. while i didn't mean to, the way i phrased the post aligns with terf ideology. a couple radfems even followed me for it.
i debated reblogging the post with this explanation attached, or making another post explaining, but ultimately i decided that i didn't want this poorly-worded post continuing to circulate at all. while i, of course, support girls protecting themselves from danger, i think someone more equipped than i should write a post about that in a way that doesn't sound radfem-y.
and, just to be clear: i entirely and profoundly reject terfism. my feminism is incompatible with radfem ideology. i've learned better, and i'm trying to do better.

welcome to my existential grease fire
hi i'm ej and I like to cook things and whatever so this is a place where I'll be documenting my various exploits. sometimes it's about buying fancy shit and making a new thing, and sometimes it's about "god fucking dammit ej this is the 8th time you've gotten orange juice and forgotten about it in the back of your fridge fucking USE IT FOR SOMETHING" and it's always about going off vibes bc i'm allergic to instructions and measuring utensils the way a vampire is allergic to garlic. (i will try my best to figure these things out for other ppl though as needed to communicate shit I'm doing if anyone asks tho)
also i know that by making a blog dedicated exclusively to posting pictures of food I'm making a medium.com author wake up in a cold sweat somewhere with the nauseatingly intense urge to write a think piece about how we all try to gain external approval online (which they then will post to a website to gain external approval) and I give about 0 fucks. Measuring it with a scale. Yep 0 of them there. I like to do a thing and I don't have any friends in my new city to ramble about the thing with so you're all going to hear about it so strap in and prepare for questionably executed food that I like to make.
also this is a sideblog and i follow from @socialjusticebard

Hi! First, I really appreciate your blog & have learned a lot! My question...I’m writing a story where a Japanese rock band tries to break into the US market at some point. I’m aware that real J-Rock bands often experience racism in the form of gross comments about their accents & how their lyrics aren’t all in English. The problem is as a white person, should I address such issues in-story at all? I don’t want to erase real experiences, but don’t know if I’m qualified to address them. Thanks!!
J-Rock band, should I address the racism they face?
I think you can address racism as a sort of subplot. Realistically, Japanese musicians can experience racism when trying to break into predominantly white markets. But I don’t think it would be a very good idea for you to try and cover it in depth, or have it be the focus of your entire book. If the story would still work if the racism subplot were removed or replaced with some other struggle, then chances are, you're not overstepping. This is kind of a delicate subject, and other Japanese people with my same level of knowledge might actively disagree with me. But personally, I think you're fine.
—Mod Ixia
I think dealing with racism is definitely an integral part of a story about modern J-rock musicians performing overseas, as it is for any East Asian artist trying to break into the Anglosphere (we see this most prominently nowadays with the popularity of K-pop). One thing to consider is how much focus the US subplot (assuming it’s a subplot) is going to get in the story. If it’s only a small part, I think you very well could and should portray some of the common racism that occurs; the examples you provided are very realistic. But if the US subplot takes up a significant portion of the plot, or if it IS the whole plot, then you might need to ask yourself if this story is yours to write, lest it become too much like an Identity story or an Immigrant story. To add onto Mod Ixia’s litmus test—if you removed the struggle plot of making it in other countries, are you still left with a good story about the band and the growth of its members?
Another thing to think about is temporal context. Is it a modern or historical story? Being the first Japanese band to be successful in the US is very different, culturally and personally, from being the 100th. If the story is set in the future, then it’s possible to take the focus away from racial struggles, and we can be more speculative and escapist with it! That being said, setting a story in the future does not absolve you of your responsibility to avoid biases, and it will require research to keep 21st-century preconceptions out of your characters’ interactions with their American fans and critics.

@socialjusticebard said: I will say this. I personally remember reading these chapters of the manga before they ever got an official English release (I am an old) and I was REALLY thrown off when I saw the official translation used “Marik” bc as far as I know, that’s not a real Arabic name and I thought they were trying to use a real name like “Malik,” and “Mariku” was only in the original bc yeah Japanese doesn’t have that distinction between L and R.On the English side, we don’t really have that excuse. I also FIRMLY believe that the name choice may be grounded in racism. At the time, due to 9/11, [mainstream] America was at the height of Islamophobia/anti-middle-eastern xenophobia, so I think there’s probably some validity to the theory that messing up the names was done on purpose to obscure their origins. always thought the same was probably true for “Ishizu,” whose name I always thought was intended to be “Isis * (I say “due to 9/11” but really I mean the sheer volume of propaganda surrounding it) I think I had the same reaction when I watched the English version of the anime (I’d hunted down and watched the Japanese episodes before bc I used to have a blog where I compared them and noted cuts and edits in the dub). I was like “Marik...? Why....? Where did they get that from....?”
[ In this(x) post ]
Hiya! Idk why tumblr made your replies all effed up so I copied them all in one instead of replying to a bazillion(og post is linked) bc you have some great points!
As I agreed with the previous person, yes I do agree it is more likely then not that the American dub/translation team at the time went “oH s*it! can’t have the name ‘Malik or Isis’ for racist reasons and simply when in and said “keep it as MaRik” (how its written in Romaji) instead of doing what Takahashi intended and making it “MaLik”. But of course I doubt anyone will admit it so we’ll probably never get it confirmed, but the R -> L has happened before as a genuine mistake (as I stated in the linked addition with Devil May Cry flubbing up Nero Angelo and making it Nelo Angelo)
As for Ishizu!-- I ALSO think it’s very likely that Takahashi’s editors made him change it, but due to how the names “Isis” and “Ishizu” look similar in Japanese Katakana it was a less jarring change for the Japanese readers. Let me explain (Also really glad now I bought a JPNS volume when I studied abroad! Please click to better see tumblr kills the quality):
Tumblr media
イシズ  -- (Ishizu) is written like this, [first character I, second SHI, third SU] says the profiles itself. That little “ (called Nigori) at the end changes the katakana “SU” -> “ZU”. Meanwhile... イシス -- (Isis) is written like this, [first character I, second SHI, third SU]
So to Japanese readers it is only a slight altercation on how her name is written (again, I agree with you, most likely due to racism). However in the west, because of this the names become wildly different looking in English letters, so that’s possibly how that happened, the JPNS editors saw イシス (Isis) and then elbowed Takahashi to changed it so he jut slapped on the Nigori (“) to change it to “ZU” at the end.
(Note: Nigori changes the sounds of characters they are applied to [i.e. KA -> GA, KI -> GI and so on] there are also a modifier that looks like a degrees symbol like this: ぴ (Maru) which alters the other characters as well, originally that Hiragana is “HI” but turns into - > “PI” with just that little mark, see more here or just google in general [x]
Hope that was interesting to read at the very least, but yes I DO think it’s very likely their names were changed due to people being racist, instead of by accident, I am NOT denying that.
The OG post was about people tacking on the “U” at the end of Atem’s name or “U” at the end of Marik/Malik-- because either way with Mark/Malik, the obvious intent was it to be cut off with no extra letter but there is not standalone solo “M” or “K” character (again, like the Instagram example becoming Instagramu)
(ALSO NOTE: if you are adding it because you have a fanifc, comic, or whatever and you are using them to differentiate because otherwise they’ll all have the same name, that is 100% ok, as stated in the original post)
And below the cut is the publisher of the Japanese copy of the manga I have:

Last song: "Blow the Man Down" - The Longest Johns (I threw this album on for the drive home, preceded by the Mamas and the Papas' version of "Dream A Little Dream of Me" and also the Escape From New York theme, bc I'm insane.)
Last film: I half-rewatched both Big Trouble in Little China and The Thief and the Cobbler (Recobbled Cut Mark 5 WIP) yesterday. Last new-to-me was Escape from L.A. John Jarpenter's Russell films have captivated me this January and it's all my brother's fault.
Currently reading: I finished House of Many Ways (meh) and am deciding what to do next. What I should do is finish Rebecca and Watership Down, but I also want to finally start Marcus Rediker's Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea.
Currently watching: @widowshill and I are currently watching The Untamed and Dark Shadows together and next time we watch we are going to get SLAMMED with plot from both sdfjlsfjlsfjl.
Currently consuming: Nothing (just brushed my teeth), but I had the dinner of champions: microwaved Italian meatballs, an apple, and pretzel chips. At least I had leftover Thai food for lunch.
Currently craving: Sleep but also the next installment in Wendy–Aleah TV Night; it's gonna be a wild one.

Good Morning. Today I'm listening to @3teeth and it sure is giving me the energy I need. Do you love them too? I really enjoy how heavy and intense everything is, along with their strong political and social messages. The new album actually reminds me of D'espairs Ray's sound a lot, but extra heavy! It's stressful living in a world like this, but I think it is really evolving. We're just fighting in a hard battle right now, where, to quote a recent viral video, "You can't tell who is a devil and who is an angel anymore." I hope everyone makes it through this. Just as I predicted, America is NOT handling this very well. I'm resolving to make more donations from my monthly income and double up on my socialist/progressive agenda & activities. #industrialmetal #music #socialist #progressive #musician #bernie2020 #american #goth #lgbt #trans #nonbinaryftm #sexpotrevenge #visualkei #emo #punk #socialjusticebard #quarantineday13 (at Guam) https://www.instagram.com/p/B-eDsVcJWOn/?igshid=w7giq74bjva

socialjusticebard replied to your post “I'm dating a nb person. I am a queer cisfemale, but almost exclusively...”
As a nonbinary person, I don’t understand how it’s transphobic for someone normally attracted to women to not be attracted to masculinity. If this anon was my partner and they really loved me I would ask them to still respect me and my identity and pronouns, but at the same time, I wouldn’t expect them to automatically be attracted to masculinity just because it’s me. That’s kind of like saying they can choose what to be attracted to isn’t it? That’s dangerous territory don’t you think?
In fact, if she’s not attracted to men and masculinity, I would almost EXPECT her to not be attracted to a partner when that partner identifies as masculine
I guess there's the issue of whether or not she sees her partner "being in the middle" of genders as being a blank slate of sorts, which is very problematic. But I was reluctant to assume that because she said she's "almost exclusively" dated women, which implies she's dated other people, and we don't know what gender they are. She could be attracted to genders without a masculine component.
I might agree with you if it hadn’t been for this part of OP’s post:
but feel my identity as a queer female is threatened somehow
EDIT to add: I did edit my original answer to also address OP’s internalized queerphhobia.

socialjusticebard replied to your post “Guess who has two thumbs and an exhibition coming up and can’t find...”
I hope you post a video of it! I'm curious. You're just a recreational skater right? That's what I am and I don't ever see others on here. (I'm doing a program soon as well and I'm gonna add a flip too but just one or I will break every bone in my body )
If someone films it I’ll post it, but I’m actually on a figure skating team for my university and the exhibition helps decide who goes to the competition in November. So I’d be considered a collegiate skater, I am a USFS member and I plan on taking my moves in the field and freestyle tests to become a US Gold Medalist in each, which anyone can become through passing all the tests, but it is hard. Good luck with your program and with your flip!

socialjusticebard replied to your chat: some asshole: wah wah i dont like compulsory...
Re: your tag about the American election….just FYI Most of our problems come not from people being too lazy to vote, but from our system actively working against people trying to vote, ESPECIALLY minority voters. It’s rare that non rich/white/GOP people just all say “meh I don’t care”. I think it’s wild that people do that where you are though to the point where they have to have compulsory voting
oh yeah i’m aware of that; i should probably clarify that i meant that compulsory voting can help protect against that since EVERYBODY has to vote and the gov cant bring bring in bullshit laws like the voter ID and also elections are always on weekends and you can get time off from work to vote etc.
and yeah i think it’s wild too like you have a chance to have a direct say in the leadership of our country and they just throw that away??? what the hell
