Hello! I have a question and I would like to know the opinion of an expert. If Ivy causes accelerated plant growth to gigantic proportions in a certain area, does this lead to soil depletion in this area?
You have asked one of the most complicated (and fascinating) questions someone could possibly ask, which I’ve also been trying to figure out. So! I have spent days looking through Environmental Microbiology (Pepper et al., 2015) to wrap my mind around it.
Here’s a suitably unhinged delve into soils, which are the most complicated and diverse ecosystem on the planet :’) are rapidly disappearing and can take hundreds of years to form. And a bit about why I started Pamela with cyanobacteria.

Tldr: YES?
If these are real, oligotrophic Soils, nitrogen (which is usually the most limiting thing plants need from soil) you would need enough to be about 12% of each dry cell’s weight. So, you would have to provide your own nitrogen fertilizer or use all the available nitrogen, probably inorganic nitrogen salts, Or it just wouldn’t grow in the first place.
Hope this helps? This is very short for soils too, they’re way more complex and interesting than I can express here. And I think it’s interesting to know how she would get what she needs in a city.

Getting Started With Multidimensional Soil Layers in the ArcGIS Living Atlas of the World.
Tumblr media
World Soils 250m Organic Carbon Density. Soil layers are served in six
The ArcGIS Living Atlas of the World is proud to announce the curation and release of the ISRIC Soilgrids soil maps of the world, version 2.0. At 250m resolution, they represent the best available soil data for many places.
Before now these layers were only available as VRT tiles on a server, or through WMS/WCS, and were difficult to work with. Now working with them is online, and only takes a few steps.
The soil maps contain 11 thematic layers for mapping and decision support. In some places there is more confidence about the values on the soil map, and we included the uncertainty as companions to the 11 layers. Finally, these soil maps show values at six depth ranges around the world.

Hello there, I have a somewhat absurd botany question for you.
Imagine I wanted to plant a flower in a pot filled with crushed up cookies. If I watered it regularly, could the plant survive?
Also as a bonus question, do you know what kind of cookie would make the best soil, and what kind of plant would have the best chance of survival?
Thank you, and I'm sorry.
So turns out people don’t just list how much N and molybdenum is in cookies, but here’s something I cobbled up from a few places.
Tumblr media
TLDR: MAYBE???
So I THINK, a chocolate chip cookie would have the 17 nutrients needed. Wether a plant can use them in this form, if that’s the right amount or if something in cookies kills them is uh… beyond the scope of this ask. Unless someone else wants to add?
Additionally soil needs inorganic components, the size and texture of ‘parent material’ (weathered rock-> sand, loam, clay) change how the soil is taken up. Maybe cookies would be fine? I think they’d end up pretty tightly packed and soggy like clay which is not ideal. Maybe a dandelion could do it.
I think the cookie that would make the best soil would have lots of nuts, seeds and fruits, since those are like little boxed lunches for baby plants (and animals).
I um, hope this helps? It would be an interesting experiment!
