Sora & Vega’s mugshots after their first run-in with Jericho’s police department, aka Skywolf Barbie meme.
@barb-l Honestly, I was almost done with these when I had the idea of how Sheriff Walker would react to finding out he has to deal with an Addams' spawn and then how Enid & Wednesday would react to Vega getting arrested. Which then led to the fact that getting arrested is basically an Addams Family tradition at this point. And it was just too funny to pass up on both ideas, so I just had to draw it.
The lil comic:

Vega: We are going to take a trip!
Sora: To where?
Vega: Oh you’ll see! We’re just going to visit someone.
Sora: Who is this someone?
Vega: Don’t worry about it! Now are you in or out? Scratch that, you’re in. Regardless.
Vega: *pulls out Addams family ritual book*
Sora: Ugh. Please let this be a normal trip.
Enid: With my daughter? Absolutely!
Wednesday: Unlikely.

Ultimate^2
Super Smash Brothers Ultimate has finally unveiled its final DLC character, with reactions ranging fully across the spectrum. Hot takes abound.
I mean, statistically, just about every possible opinion is going to be represented. There were at least 500,000 people watching the reveal stream, and that’s not including those viewing through restreams. That’s insane for a trailer of any kind, let alone for a console-exclusive video game DLC.
Now that it’s been like… a day and a bit, I think most of the spciest takes have probably been made, which is the perfect time for me to chip in with my own milder opinion. More of a butter chicken, really.
(no images in this one i’m lazy tonight)
I figure I’m this late already, might as well drop some notes on the other ones first.
Piranha Plant was kind of the definition of an unexpected pick. Not only was it from an already well-represented franchise, being fucking Mario, it’s also just…not a character. As such it makes an odd choice for a DLC fighter…except for the part where it was free. If you owned the game in its first month. And frankly, I don’t think people would have been happy if it wasn’t. As it is, though, it’s a perfectly fine character- surprisingly cute, actually.
I’m unsurprised about Joker’s inclusion. With how huge Persona 5 became in both Japan and the west, capitalizing on it to make a shitload of money makes perfect sense. The character plays well enough, though the meter gimmick was kind of a daunting sign of things to come. All that in mind, though, the most surprising thing about Joker being in the game is that they still haven’t put P5 on the Switch. Atlus please.
Hero and Banjo/Kazooie were announced on the same night, and I distinctly recall someone saying that this was one for the Japanese audience and one for the Americans. I mean, I’ve never played Dragon Quest, so I guess I fell into the latter? Both series have a long, well-regarded pedigree (Banjo’s lack of recent offerings notwithstanding), so both arguably deserve their respective positions. Hero is the much more notable character gameplaywise, though, with the incredibly complex mana and spellcasting mechanics. Complaints about RNG in Smash aren’t completely unfounded- though it has existed in the past in the form of, say, Luigi’s misfiring side-B- but I know a lot of people think Hero took it too far. If I’m honest, though, the weirdest thing is just having Akira Toriyama-ass 3D models in the game. Banjo’s gameplay is…awkward. The kit is kind of a mess, but at least the gimmicks weren’t going too hard, you know?
Next was Terry, perhaps the most obscure character on the entire list in 2021. I actually really like Terry in this game- while he’s still trying to emulate a similar feel to Ryu/Ken, the difference feels more natural, if that makes sense. Maybe it’s because I’ve never really devoted significant time to them, but Terry’s kit feels easier to work within than the Shotos when going between characters.
Finally for the first Pass, we had Byleth. I think it’s for the best that they announced the second Fighter’s Pass before this released, because if both 4 and Ultimate had ended their run on Fire Emblem DLCs then people would have been pissed. I mean, people were already pissed, but like…moreso. As someone who has played Three Houses, I do think the game is worth celebrating, but having yet another Fire Emblem Protagonist (read: basically a blank slate) in the game over all the substantially more interesting characters 3H has to offer is just really frustrating. Also the final smash looks like dogshit, like FE3H has overall worse animations than Smash for obvious reasons but I’m pretty sure this attack looked better the first time around.
FP2 opened with Min Min, which brings ARMS to the table. ARMS. The only first-party fighting game Nintendo has outside of Smash, so it looks a bit less weird next to everything else but…come on, man. I think this was the most confusing pick of all of them- the game came out in 2017, and having Min Min in Smash would serve as promotion for a sequel…which hasn’t been announced. There was a graphic novel in the works, but it was cancelled earlier this year. Oops? At least the stage was fun.
As much as playing them is awkward and complex, the Minecraft addition was fitting. Only the best-selling game around. I think people weren’t sure if Microsoft would go for it, but they let us have Banjo, so sure. I’m mostly just annoyed that they couldn’t get any of the songs from the actual game in there- like, you got one in from the fucking mobile game, but you couldn’t just get C418 on the phone?
Sephiroth is definitely one of the hype-ier releases from this pass. The character is iconic, as is his theme and his home game. I’ve never played any Final Fantasy game, but I can still respect the name. Once I remember how to spell it. The whole bossfight aspect to his release was also quite cool, while it lasted.
On the other hand, I have no love for Pyra nor Mythra. There’s so much wrong with these ones, frankly. They’re another swordy character, immediately following Sephiroth too, and they go back on Smash’s very deliberate decision to split characters like Zelda/Sheik and Samus/ZSS up (Yes I know Pokemon Trainer does the same thing but I have a lot more leniency for them). Add in their being from a JRPG much less well-known or remembered than the previous couple characters and the designs being…questionable, I have a big issue with the whole thing. This was also around when I kinda stopped playing the game in general, and they definitely didn’t help pull me back in.
Kazuya might have, though. With the exception of him and Sephiroth, all the characters from the Fighter’s Passes were pretty much protagonist-types, but this motherfucker pulses with the essence of bad guy. What I’m saying is that he’s fucking cool, and while he’s ludicrously complex, that makes perfect sense since…I mean just look at the combo lists from Tekken 7. His inclusion also kinda rounds out the list of biggest fighting game franchises out there being rep’d in the game, though I imagine now I’m going to have stans from Mortal Kombat or whatever on my back. They’re not going to put a fatality-capable character in Smash, guys!
Finally, this rounds us around to the original point of this article. Let’s talk about Sora. And by that I mean…I don’t really have a huge amount to say about him. Kingdom Hearts is a franchise that completely passed me by growing up, and I don’t think I have the time or energy to devote to it now. I’m sure it’s good, people seemed really excited for him to be in the game so they have to have gotten that love from somewhere, but I don’t share that feeling.
That’s not to say that I don’t think he deserves a slot. The idea of “deserving a slot” in Smash Bros is kind of an odd concept, even though it’s come up a lot so far this post. But a slot in this roster isn’t just a place in a popular fighting game, because at this point, Smash is kind of a museum of (mostly Nintendo) games- and so having representation is a forever acknowledgment that the franchise is, or has been, an icon to so many. Kingdom Hearts, to my knowledge, has 100% earned that position, and so Sora getting to be playable here makes perfect sense. He wasn’t my pick (Touhou representation never I guess), but I’m happy for those who wanted him.
As far as the actual gameplay looks, he reads like a character that kept in mind what people didn’t like about Hero when he released. It’s another sword-based character, which I think at this point speaks more about the demographic of video game characters than it does about Smash. But I appreciate that the Magic Bullshit is toned down, and that it’s also his only real gimmick (The 3-hit combo feature is A Thing, but other characters e.g. Bayonetta have already done that, so whatever). His recovery potential looks patently absurd- like he just gets Pikachu/Pichu’s Up-B as a Side-B that can also be chained with his actual Up-B? This guy better be light as hell or he’s going to be super hard to take out. I dunno, I think he looks solidly fun enough- more dynamic and aerial than the other swordfighters, at least- and that’s good enough for me.
And I guess that marks the end of Smash Ultimate. Not with a bang, but with a key…dude. It’s been a very solid run, the game managing to keep itself fresh across several years of development, even as other games have risen and fallen. Smash is kind of forever at this point, I think, though the finality of Ultimate’s ultimate character implies that this particular iteration may be coming to its end. And seeing as it is always one Smash per console, I wouldn’t be shocked if the Switch itself was nearing its endgame as well.
Okay but also it’s pretty funny how they heavily censored everything Disney out of Sora’s DLC except for that little Mickey charm on the trailer, like how much must that one shot have cost them, was it even remotely worth it, I don’t know but I kinda want to

Just... Nomura can’t write female characters. He never has been able to, and he probably never will. And I see no point in denying that anymore, and I find it weird when people do.
Kairi he’s dropped the ball with numerous times (though I do think there’s been a lot of great there, and I don’t think she’s as bad as people say. Like, the fandom consent seems to be that the other girls have at least had some moments of greatness, but Kairi has mostly always been bad. And I don’t agree. I think they’re more on par than people think. Like, everyone always says that Naminé’s better than Kairi, because she had an arc in CoM: an arc where she was being used by the Organization--and partly wanted to be used, because she did want to make herself a part of someone’s heart--but then realized what she was doing was wrong, and stood up to them despite the odds and made things right. They then say she’s better than KH1 Kairi for this reason. But KH1 Kairi had an arc too, that most people didn’t see: about her being afraid of change because of her traumatic past, and having to let of of that in the end, in letting Sora and Riku leave her. And I think that’s just as valid).
Naminé used to be pretty great... but she’s pretty much disappeared from the series at this point (like Kairi used to be disappeared from it, and has pretty much been Exposition Girl every time she shows up again).
Xion... Xion is wonderful (though you still have people arguing this). And I feel she hasn’t really failed yet? But I sadly think this is somehow a happy accident, and it’ll probably happen eventually. Also, there are days I wonder if Nomura treats Xion well, because deep down he mostly sees her as another Sora: a boy. Since she was supposed to be a clone of him, after all. I sincerely hope not, but I still have this fear. Edit: Okay. So here’s the thing with Xion. There are people who think this girl is a complete Mary-Sue and has no development and nothing to her story... and those people are just wrong. They are. You also have people who think she’s useless, because at the beginning of Days she can only fire spells to help you (but not very well). And eventually she loses her Keyblade, and that kind of thing, and has to rely on Roxas and Axel to get her out of this situation. Some people seriously hate on her for this, because they think she was a burden to her friends. And I don’t think these people get what the point of friendship is, then. But Xion’s a pretty good character. Days is half her story (which actually angers some people, as they think she stole what was supposed to be Roxas’ and/or Organization XIII’s). And she does things and drives the plot. We learn a lot about her as a person, see her grow (from someone who’s pretty much an infant--with that little knowledge of the world--to a selfless young woman, willing to sacrifice herself for the greater good). But she’s only playable in mission mode (the only time she’s been playable to this date, so Aqua certainly beats her there. Which isn’t good). I also am sort of irked that she comes back working for Xemans in KHIII (though I get why she did. It wasn’t her choice or fault), when Days had such a huge plot of her abandoning them over and over again. But eventually she defects again, and does as much in KHIII as pretty much anyone who isn’t Sora gets to do at that point. It’s also worth noting that Xion’s the only girl in the series who’s been allowed to breakdown. Aqua almost did in 0.2, but then Nomura changed his mind about it. Like I said, Xion’s pretty great (in my, and others’ opinions). But she’s only been here for, like, two games. Doesn’t seem to be doing much now...  And since this is a series where people have to do things--dangit (at least for other fans. Not so much for me)!--I feel Xion still hasn’t done that much. At least not for the world. More than some of the girls and other characters’ maybe, but not at the top of the list.
Aqua is exceptional, the fandom knows it. But many of us don’t think she really had any character development until 0.2 (that she was kind of static in BbS before that). And people have even criticized her BbS arc: where she doesn’t really have her own plot or her own unique boss (even though she did end up the main character), and was just baby-sitting Terra and Ventus, essentially. A lot of people also had issues with her saying that Sora and the gang had seen her weak (in falling to the darkness) to long and now needed to see her be strong... only for her to lose to Vanitas, and her giving up and letting herself get killed in the Keyblade Graveyard (some people are okay with this, as it was in response to her PTSD. Others are not).
Tifa and Aerith in then FFVII Remake. Tbh, I think they’re only as great as they are, because Nomura had other people helping him with them: Toriyama, Nojima, and maybe even Kitase. And since he’s going off of the great characters form Sakaguchi, Nojima, and Kitase’s previous work with them.
And Stella... I am a Stella Stan. I always have been, and I always will be. And for the longest time, I resented Lunafreya for taking Stella’s place and thought Stella would have been a better character. Now I kind of find that laughable. Because now I believe Tabata was telling the truth when he said that Stella was a complete damsel in distress (that mostly seems to be a trend of Nomura with female characters. Even when he tries to get out of it), and we’ve certainly seen that with Nameless Star in KH though far (though I do love her personality. And she has given us the key to save Sora now--which I appreciate--and hopefully she’ll do more in the future). The thing with Luna and Stella, is that Luna actually did things... but I feel she had little personality. (Though this can be defended by the plot: she was essentially brainwashed at a young age and then grew up under house arrest, where the only thing she was allowed to do was associated with the thing she was brainwashed for. That was literally all she had, so of course it’s going to be the only thing she cares about. And Dawn of the Future fixes this about her, when she realizes the thing she’d believed her entire life was a lie and now she has to figure out how Lunafreya the person is, not Lunafreya the Oracle), whereas I feel Stella probably would have and will have a lot of personality (maybe. Hopefully), but probably not do much. We’ll see.
And I could get into the other girls, too: Like how Invi in KH is a nothing character thus far... how Strelitzia was created just to die... how Skuld was kind of cool in KHUX, but is now just kind of there... how there have been some consistency issues in Ava’s characterization, maybe (even when she might be shaping up to be one of the greatest KH girls now, if not already there. But I’m not gonna).
Also: This is NOT me bashing ANY of these girls. I love them all--as one should, I feel--and want them to have all the love and content they deserve, that canon doesn’t always give them. I’m just pointing out how Nomura’s not the greatest at them (maybe so we don’t get our hopes up?), and why I think it’s silly to pit them against each other, when they’re all pretty equal in my eyes. And also.. hopefully Nomura could change his ways sometime. -fingers crossed-
Edit: Nomura also has a bad habit of wanting to fridge female characters. It was his idea that they kill off Aerith in FFVII. And now Strelitzia and Kairi. And I think Lunafreya in FFXV was his fault, too (her getting fridged there was probably leftover from when she was still Stella), since Stella herself is pretty much fridged in KH right now.

Video Game, and Fandom Search
Hello!  With the summer coming to an end, I need some new partners to Write with! But,here is a quick run-down.  Name/Alias: Bocaj Age: 22 Time-Zone: EST Fandom Characters or OC's: This is Tricky. Some I like OC's, some I don't. So with any Fandom, I will make a note, of which.  Reply Length : Typically, a paragraph or two. Open to write more. Reply Time: I try to get at least one reply per day, will always attempt more. But, real life always comes first.  POV: Third Person, Past Tense.  Medium: Email or Discord. Email:[email protected]!  So, if you are still reading, lovely~!  Time, to list through what I am into currently, and any thoughts for plots and such. I always, always love a sense of story added in. In general, adventure themes, action, romance, Time-Whimey, War, and others, are themes I lean towards. Of course, for each Fandom here, not all apply to such.  Fandoms Start here:  JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Ahh, JoJo's.. Started it last year, because a co-worker had mentioned it was something to really enjoy, and at first I was a bit iffy. Though, now I am obsessed. I won't try to say I am the best fan around, but I do love the series from what I have read and seen. So, for this Fandom, I am open to both :Canon and OC Characters. Just not mixed together. If we want Canon, let's stick with them. Or, OC's, let's go that route only. I think, because the Multiverse Does Exist within Jojo's, creating our own Timeline within can be fun! Our own JoJo, and Jobro team! Perhaps have it set during a War, and see how Stands could turn the Whims of Fate.  Or, a more modern setting, with Stands.  Some Canon Characters I adore are: Caesar, Joseph (Both Young and Old) Jolyne, Josuke, Giorno, Bruno, Diavolo, DIO, Any Zeppeli if I am being honest, Lisa Lisa, SpeedWagon, (Not finished SBR) But I do like Johnny too! Others of course, too! Tales of Berseria: Probably my favorite Tales game, that I have personally played. For this, Canon Characters only. Though, very open to AU ideas for this game.  Perhaps, some school AU? Like their School DLC costumes. Or, take a Bizarre Route and give them all Stands and a JoJo like problem/World to deal with.  Not too many ideas for this game yet.  Persona 5,
my first Persona game. So, I am a little bias when it comes to this series. I have a understanding of Persona 4, though I do not have any real want to go back and play that title.(Nothing against those who love P4. I hear all the time, its better. And perhaps it is, I am not denying that.) I love the Phantom Thieves and their story, and can not wait for Persona 5 Royal!  When it comes to P5, I prefer to stick to Canon Characters. Open to add our own little head-canon thoughts to them. Also, a great topic of Debate: Ren or Akira.  I like Ren, because I am a Star Wars geek, and Ren makes me think of Kylo Ren ; however, either work for me. I was first introduced to the Akira name, from one of the manga series. But, again, I am not too stuck on it. If I had a choice, Ren, but Akira is just as good. (Kinda pairs him up with Akechi a little more, when its Akira, I feel.)  When it comes to ideas, I am quite open as well! One thought I have had, and it needs some work, is Crossing Persona 5 over, with Kingdom Hearts. Both Deal with Hearts, right? It could be as simple, as Persona 5 is a world within the Realm of Kingdom Hearts. But, the idea of having the Phantom Thieves, or at least one or two, work with Sora is such a fun thought! Open to do something based around the Dancing Costumes; I know in the Dancing game, its explained they are in the Meta-verse, for the entertainment of the Wardens, and their siblings. Though, I wouldn't mind creating some new Palace they deal with, where Dancing is an really odd and big factor in it.  If we want something with Shipping, my favorite ship is: AnnXMakoto.  Or, any AU spin. Phantom Thieves, in the world of Pokemon? Sure! Why Not>! Kingdom Hearts! Fill me, with the power of...Darkness! Another series I have loved for a long time. What's your favorite Trio?! Were you satisfied with KHIII? My trio, is Sea-Salt. As I loved 358/2 Days (Read as: Three, Five, Eight, Days Over Two....for some reason....)) and as for KHIII, I was! I know some weren't, but it delivered on everything I needed to feel, the feels.  Canon Characters, please.  But, again, any head-canon thoughts, feel free to share them!  For this Fandom, we can dive in anywhere. Want to explore a certain game more, with our own twists? Let's! Wanna do an AU, with our favorite characters? An AU Inspired by Final Fantasy X-2, starring Aqua, Kairi, Nanime, And Xion? I'd love ya! Re-write some Canon events, and create a new KH time-line? I love timey-whimey problems!  Favorite over-all KH character?  Xion, for me. Something about the quiet girl has always appealed to me. Though, Luxord, despite what short amount of time we see him, is another favorite.
Akira Toriyama's World, of Dragon Ball I have specific ideas for this one.  1) Deals within an AU, with Gohan and Videl, more focusing on their jobs as Saiyaman and Saiyman-2./Woman. The Buu Saga, wouldn't have occurred the way it did. Instead, allowing Gohan time to be more of a hero. Though, new foes would appear. Perhaps, the non-canon movie villains, like Bojack, Cooler, and others. Android 21, if we want to slide her into the mix too. Canon and OC's. But, Canon are the main focus. 2) Within Universe 6,  I'd like to adapt the Tuffle Arc from GT, but with the Universe 6 Saiyans! Cabba, Kale, and Caulifla having to fight off the Tuffle infection! I'd like to include the Twin Tuffles from Heroes, but open to OC Tuffles being the main Antagonist.  Despite what anyone might think of Disney's control of the Franchise, I am still quite in love with it. I do have high hopes for Episode IX. Though, I don't want to focus any RP in the new era. Instead, I'd like to go more in some AU route (A running theme in this post, I know..) But, The Force Unleashed in DLC, had plots of this nature. With Luke falling on Hoth, due to Starkiller, and Leia taking up the 'Last' Jedi role. And, if one does a search for scrapped Concept Art for Battlefront-4, they had all sorts of AU thoughts: Darth Obi-wan, Jedi-Maul, Sith Luke and Leia, Light-Side Vader, and so much more! I think, diving into some AU could be fun! An AU where Luke and Leia, serve the Empire, and its up to an Old Light Side Anakin to redeem his kids?  Instead of Qui-Gon being killed on Naboo, perhaps it was Obi-wan; allowing Qui-Gon to become Anakin's Master, but with the scar of losing his Padwan.  Or, perhaps a tale on Anakin and Obi-Wan, during Anakin's training. I finished reading Master and Apprentice , which is a canon book about Obi-wan and Qui-Gon, and loved it.  Or, another idea, dealing within EA's Battlefront II and Inferno Squad. I'd like a story with them, actual being the Elite Squad for the Empire, and not becoming Rebels. Might be odd to write from the Empire's POV. But, I wish they had gone another way with those characters. It is was so underwhelming to see Iden just randomly have a change of heart. Without seeing the Bad-ass Special Force Commander.
Though, I do not have as many ideas/thoughts for these, here are some others. ! Sword Art Online/Gun Gale Online My Hero Academia  Super Sentai/Power Rangers Power Rangers 2017 Movie-Verse Pokemon The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya Catherine/Katherine Thanks for reading!

You guys get to have part 2 a lot sooner than intended because I'm a lot more invested in this AU than I realized. And no, Wednesday doesn't notice that that's actually Enid because I love comedic misunderstandings.

Just to irritate the fans who really wanted Sora to be in Ultimate, I want someone to make a Virgin/Chad meme with the Virgin Keyblade Wielder and the Chad Luminary.
Virgin Keyblade Wielder:
Weird-looking melee weapon
Tetsuya “Too many belts” Nomura
Would probably only have Roxas as a potential alt
Hangs with Disney characters, who represent a monopoly
Chad Luminary:
Swords, boomerangs, and more
Akira “Dragon Ball Z” Toriyama
Has three other Dragon Quest protags as alts
Gets to hang with Mario and crew, who represent fun
Feel free to add more!

Next Gen Nevermore AU
Vega Addams- Werewolf: ability to transform into a wolf under the full moon
Sora Toriyama- Psychic: ability to see, hear, and interact with ghosts
Regine Ottinger- Volukinetic: ability to control tiny creatures such as insects, worms, etc.
So @barb-l, I'm sorry but I'm a little extra and decided to add something else to the drawing(s) I was already almost finished with, so I got sidetracked with that. BUT to make up for making you wait a little longer, I made this as a little treat/placeholder. Hope you like it!

watergubby replied to your post: Also, Fuck Dragon Quest. Give me Sora.
Fuck you dragon quest is better
As someone who hasn’t played any kind of Dragon Quest,
and has gotten kinda tired of Akira Toriyama’s art style due to various reasons...
I’ll have to take your word for it.

Is that... a JoJo's Reference?! JoJo's Bizarre Adventure References in Anime!
When you hear the title “JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure,” you probably start to think of some of your favorite classic scenes and moments, poses, or quotes! You aren’t alone; JoJo is a really popular series across the world, and throughout the history of the series, many other creators have given nods of respect to Hirohiko Araki’s classic work. Whether it’s characters repeating famous lines, recreating poses, or copying key scenes for comedic effect, Araki is a popular well for homages to return to! We’ll be taking a look at JoJo references in anime, but what are we classifying as a “reference?” For the sake of this article, we’ll be looking at good faith, direct references, rather than plagiarism or “borrowed” ideas. We’ll also take a look at the following specific areas: posing, quotes, and recreated sequences/scenes. And for the sake of spoilers, we won’t include any references that go beyond where Golden Wind has currently reached!
It probably goes without saying, but the most popular styles of reference in anime revolve around poses and quotes. Recreating the visual style of famous JoJo poses provides a fun non-sequitur gags, while also drawing upon shared cultural memories of pop-cultural knowledge; while many of the titles that make JoJo references are comedies, many more utilize them in cut-away gags in places that one might not expect to see them. Common targets for pose-based references are Jonathan’s classic hand over his face pose, Jotaro’s pointing pose, Joseph’s numerous poses and mannerisms from Part 2, and of course, DIO! JoJo’s poses are some of its most iconic visual representations, so it makes sense that people looking to give a nod to the series would pull from them more than other areas. Classic JoJo poses have shown up in countless anime, but some of our favorites include Karamatsu recreating Jonathan’s pose in Mr. Osomatsu, the Serinuma family of Kiss Him, Not Me posing as a group, OniAi’s group pose, My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU’s Giorno homage, and the MEGANEBU! JoJo posing competition! There are plenty more, we’re sure, probably almost too many to mention! One thing is for sure: Jonathan’s pose seems to be the most iconic, showing up in Gintama, Show By Rock!!, and many more! Even the Pokémon anime has gotten in on the references, where in episode 860, Meowth poses like Jonathan and Joseph while making references to Dio’s classic “useless” lines; sadly, only the poses made it into the dubbed version of XY.
Aside from posing directly, there are a few times in which JoJo-styled aesthetics are used in anime to reference the manga and styling. Fairy Tail’s Lamy has a few JoJo inspired moments in episode 238, where she makes a particular pose (and it even appears in the animation for the theme song NEVER-END TALE!). No Game No Life features numerous posing and other JoJo themed segments, but for us one of the best, and easily overlooked, comes from THE IDOLM@STER anime. In episode 6, “The Decision to Move Forward,” Kotori has a brief moment where she imagines the 765 Pro girls opening up a Tamatebako from the Japanese myth of Urashima Taro. During her fantasy, the anime shifts into a black and white manga aesthetic, with the characters being depicted in Hirohiko Araki’s unique style! The sequence is short and easy to miss, but features lovingly rendered details like speed lines, sound effects, and facial expressions that look straight out of the JoJo manga itself!
When it comes to references, sometimes series take things to the extremes, especially gag series. In these cases, characters shift and change to look like the thing they’re referencing, and there are two clear winners in this regard: No Game No Life and Good Luck Girl! “Araki faces” are a common gag joke, but these two series make consistent, stylistic changes where characters adapt the mannerisms, poses, and aesthetics of the characters they’re referencing. These take the idea of pose references and “JoJo” style to a new level, fitting for gag series in which the laws of physics and logic don’t always have to make sense. Interestingly, both No Game No Life and Good Luck Girl heavily reference Diamond is Unbreakable, with NGNL’s Sora calling upon Rohan Kishibe numerous times, and GLG’s Ichiko makes numerous references to Josuke, even appearing in a Josuke pose wearing his uniform and even sporting his pompadour on top of her own hair!
Visual references and sight gags are only one of the ways in which anime can make references to other media, but since anime is a moving media, that means it can also recreate whole scenes and sequences. To this end, it might not surprise you that DIO is a source of popular reference material, particularly the infamous Road Roller scene! To this end, Hackadoll the Animation takes the cake with its amazing Road Roller gag: Hacka Doll v.4 tries to gift a man a car, leading to her recreating the Road Roller scene before hurling her gift at him! No Game No Life and Kiss Him, Not Me make reference to DIO’s WRYYYYYY in a similar fashions; overall, DIO is perhaps one of the most popular visual and referential gag targets, with numerous series drawing on his classic moments for a quick gag!
An even more recent reference came in the form of a callback to both Polnareff and Dr. Slump, where the joke originated in HANEBADO! When Connie reappears in episode 9, she stands above the rest of the girls to announce her arrival, to which Ayano responds with a classic set of hand signals to let Connie know that she can see maybe a bit more than her sister anticipated. The original gag stems from Polnareff, making the same set of motions during the fight with the High Priestess, but Polnareff’s use of the gag is itself a reference to Akira Toriyama’s Dr. Slump, where Arale makes the same joke. Now that’s a reference within a reference!
While the human characters of JoJo might seem like the most obvious targets for references, Stands are equally popular, popping up in numerous series. Ai-Mai-Mi features a nod to Avdol’s Magician’s Red when Mi evokes an odd looking bird spirit behind her in a show of her “courage,” while Gintama features a similar gag where Gintoki defines a Stand, causing a Star Platinum lookalike to appear behind him. MONSTER MUSUME EVERYDAY LIFE WITH MONSTER GIRLS makes a joke about Stands appearing behind their users when Centorea monologues about the valiant and dashing nature of the centaur species, causing Kimihito to jokingly ask if the knights behind her are Stands. In Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex 2nd GIG, the show regularly featured gag shorts featuring the lovable Tachikoma tanks; in one of these Tachikomatic Days segments, the art style suddenly becomes very “Araki-like,” and the Tachikoma seemingly summons a Stand, “Reset the World,” which can stop time!
While many of these are clear references, parodies, and homages, sometimes it can be easy to miss them if you aren’t looking. One of the most common references is the use of JoJo’s traditionally thick, ominous on screen sound effects. Others draw upon events and famous sequences in JoJo storylines for reference material; in Baka & Test - Summon the Beasts, Akihisa gets dragged into the darkness by a set of ominous hands, much like Yoshikage Kira’s eventual fate! DENKI-GAI references the “Taste of a liar” scene from Golden Wind, and Nyarko-san: Another Crawling Chaos is filled with constant references to less common JoJo characters and scenes, from Stroheim to Bucciarati!
With the modern David Productions anime adaptations working their way through the JoJo’s storylines, it seems like we’ll very likely see references to the show and various storylines pop up all over the place in the anime that we watch. JoJo is a popular and important series in manga and anime, and the popularity of the series has helped cement its trademark style, poses, quotes, and scenes into anime pop-culture history.
Know of any JoJo references in anime that we missed? What's your favorite of JoJo reference? Let us know in the comments!

You know... Even aside from Destiny-Islanders’ awesome idea of having Kairi be the one to gather all of the pieces of Sora into one again, to bring him back to life (since she is the one who saved him)...
If Squeenix didn’t want to do something like that, why didn’t they at least have a scene like the Noel and Serah one from XIII-2? With Noel near death, and almost disappearing into the void as he gets lost in his past and wants to stay there... but Serah (after escaping her own near death) finding him, grabbing him, and yelling at him to wake up, and giving him some moving words IIRC... And Noel eventually making the tough decision to open his eyes, and Serah being the first thing he sees, and the two of them then holding onto each other and working together to get out of there after that.
This would have worked perfectly. Especially since Toriyama had some KH and SoKai parallels with XIII-2 and Noel and Serah.
...And you could maybe then argue, that Nomura got inspired by XIII-2 for some of his KHIII ideas.
Gah.
Missed opportunity.
