for Izzy to survive ofmd and remain with the crew, with Ed, Stede needs to change.

(Izzy needs to change too, that goes without saying, but rn I'm talking about Stede)

Without Stede changing his ways re: Izzy, Izzy's fucking dead in the water.

Izzy's not going to be Ed's first choice once he and Stede reconcile. Once they kiss and make up, Stede is going to be Ed's priority and partner here, and we know he doesn't necessarily do well juggling two key priorities at once.

If Ed is forced to choose between Izzy and Stede, he'll choose Stede. He already has. He will continue to do so. I don't think Ed will make himself make that decision, he'll only do so if pushed. Izzy might try it, but I think he knows he'll lose. He's already lost.

Which leaves the power lying with Stede. Stede, who has hated Izzy from the moment they've met and has been very vocal about it. Stede, who has been largely kind and chivalrous to everyone else he meets, except for Iz. Stede, who has hurt the person Izzy cares for the most (who Izzy has hurt too, lbh).

If Stede wanted Izzy to leave, if he asked Ed to make it so, or to support him on that, I think Ed would. If Stede gave him an ultimatum, I think I know who Ed would choose. I don't know if Ed would make a stand. He hasn't in the past, not really, and with the shit Izzy's done to keep Ed and Stede apart (which instigates the shit that Ed and Stede do themselves that keep them apart) I don't know if Ed would fight to keep Izzy by his side.

Not knowing much of Ed and lzzy's past puts us at a disadvantage here, and maybe I'm doing Ed a disservice by saying that his loyalty, camaraderie and affection(?) for Izzy wouldn't heavily factor into the decision. I think we need Ed to develop into his self more, figure out who he is, what and who he wants in his life before he can make that kind of call. But within the framework here, between Ed and Stede, I can't see Ed fighting for Izzy to stay.

In part, Stede would be justified in asking Izzy to go. Izzy's done some shitty things, and despite his reasons being well-intentioned (in his mind) a lot of the time, he's a right bastard who's hurt Stede, Stede's crew, and hurt Ed. (Ed has hurt Izzy, too, they're all fucking hurting and hurting each other in turn).

But I'd honestly like to see some more exploration and depth to the Stede and Izzy dynamic. I'd like to see Stede sympathise/empathise/show some compassion, like I know he's capable of. He's so understanding of Ed's position in episode 6, and of Mary's position post-almost-stabbed-in-the-ear-hole and her motivations, imagine if we could see something similar with Iz.

It's probably why I'm desperately in love with the idea of Stede and Izzy teaming up (pit-fics, Izzy turning to Stede for help to tame the Kraken in post-canon fics) because it lays the foundation for the pair of them to begin to understand each other. I want Stede to see Izzy's devotion, his competency, his hurt. I want Izzy to see Stede as capable, and maybe for Stede to actually learn why the pair of them act Like This, when there was literally no precedent.

The thing is though, Stede doesn't need Izzy to understand him to survive; he's got all this plot armour, he's thriving in the Muppet rom-com genre, he's literally the fucking main character.

Izzy needs to be understood, otherwise he's a narrative loose end that needs to be trimmed. And ultimately, the story isn't about him. It's about the guy he's in love with and the Muppet that guy is in love with. The guy Izzy's in love with and the guy that hates his guts more than anyone else in his little world.

I genuinely don't mind if, by the laws of the narrative, Izzy has to leave or die for a good story to be forged here. But what I don't want is for Izzy to die in some morality play style where his punishment for his actions is death, neat and tidy, and the heroes dance and sing about it. And I don't want Izzy to die like a tragic loyal dog, bleeding out as a sacrifice to the rom-com gods to keep Ed and Stede blissfully happy.

I don't want his unrequited love to be the death of him.

And I think Stede is key to avoiding that happening. He can't fix Izzy, can't make the whole world right. But I think if he and Izzy can find something between them that isn't hatred, Izzy might be alright.

All of this is to say that I think while Izzy has a lot of emotional ground to make up if he wants to survive ofmd, and maybe even be happy doing so, I think he's also reliant on Stede's growth, or rather Stede's compassion extending to him to make it so.

i called in sick for work because im showing covid symptoms (i did a test and got negative but i worry) and oh my goddd…

i said i couldn’t come in and they said ‘can’t you just take panadol?’ after telling them i have been taking it, they go ‘ok, is it really that bad?’ and i told them that it is. then they go, i quote (and this is what pissed me off so bad) ‘ok, it’s just really unfair for the other workers you’ll be working with if you don’t come in tonight’

are you fucking kidding?? I WORK IN AGED CARE, if my co worker was sick, i’d tell them to go home!! how dare you make me feel guilty and feel like shit for being sick. i am not spreading what possibly could be covid or sick symptoms to older residents, we have people here in their 100s.

then they were like ‘ok you need to provide a doctors certificate’ thank fuck my mum is seeing the doctors tomorrow, she’s gonna ask for one for me. im a night worker, doctors aren’t open at night and right now getting an appointment is impossible unless you book weeks in advanced.

sorry, im just so pissed off. this happens to everyone at my work. they say it’s so hard to convince them that you’re sick. co worker had to go to hospital and they were doubtful.

I am thinking about a Tiny Wife, and a Tiny Husband. they live in the walls of a human couple’s home. got married young and rushed, drifted apart in their thirties, but it’s fine. the humans are in a similar boat. they all make it work. so the Tiny Husband does the majority of the borrowing, and the Giant Husband does the majority of the cooking, and it’s only natural that their paths cross. and they hate each other.

the Giant Husband sees this little guy as an absolute pest. destroying his herb gardens and stealing his food. so he lays traps, chases him, puts all his energy into catching this tiny. he doesn’t tell his Giant Wife. and yet, he obsesses. the Tiny Husband sees the Giant as an obstacle, and takes on the traps as challenges. he steals more than he needs, makes a show of his theft now that the human is aware. his Tiny Wife worries, but he persists.

because there’s a specific little feeling he gets around the Giant Husband that he hasn’t gotten from anyone in a long time. a sharp thrill in his chest, a flutter in his stomach. and it’s wrong, and he also might die, but he goes out anyways just to see him. and he has a very, very strong feeling that Giant Husband feels the same.

Tiny Wife is not stupid, though. initially relived by the extra alone time, she eventually realizes Tiny Husband’s gone more than he should be and he’s bringing home more than normal. she trails after him one night, and watches how her husband has this dangerous dance with the Giant Husband. the threats, the sharp comments, the danger, but more than that, how they look at each other. the light in his eyes when he comes home.

and Tiny Wife is a little bothered by how she isn’t bothered. if anything, she’s happy for Tiny Husband. she’s never seen that spark, and she’s never held it for him. she’s happy he’s getting that, even if it’s in an atypical way. despite this, she still feels an obligation to Giant Wife, and so one night while Tiny Husband and Giant Husband are trying to kill each other, she creeps her way into the massive bedroom.

Giant Wife is having tea, her soft face lit by candles. Tiny Wife makes her presence known from her perch on the nightstand, and Giant Wife does not seem as startled as she should be. introductions are made, and Tiny Wife breaks the news that their husbands are…. well they’re not fucking, she doesn’t think, instead something much weirder, but emotionally entangled regardless.

and the Giant Wife already knows. she’s at peace with it, god, she’s happy for the quiet with her husband so busy. it was an arraigned marriage, and she’s not bothered, don’t worry little one, perhaps since you’re free would you like to stay for some tea? Tiny Wife does. she has tea in the candlelight with this giantess, and when she walks home, she has a certain smile on her face that’s never been there before.

I like to think it works out. the Husbands come clean and the Wives laugh at them. everything changes, in the sense that Tiny and Giant Wives now have tea every evening and spend the nights together, and nothing changes, in the sense that the Husbands are still trying to kill each other.

(but now they also kiss sometimes, too.)
