I am publically apologizing to Lanolin for how much I hated her. I did this to almost every new IDW character but Lanolin is underrated so i'll give her a post (which is funny because she's not even one of my blorbos) she's just. the tired straight man and is hilarious. especially since Lanolin just got here and is already tired. she and Whisper went through a digital hellscape together. she picked a fight with tangle's paddleball. disappointed by Silver (Silver *is* a blorbo and i may not like the Diamond Cutter's part of Issue 63 i think that neither Silver and Lanolin were in the wrong)
sorry for hating you on sight girly i need to believe in IDW more

ESL: emotional support lemur
seriously though, why is tangle the only idw character who’s mentally/emotionally stable?
- whisper has trauma/ptsd
- jewel and belle are nervous wreaks
- surge and kit were brainwashed, traumatized, and are volatile af
- lanolin’s def going through something too
- and then tangle’s just this happy, trauma-free gal having the time of her life

Saw your thoughts on Lanolin and figured I should pipe in with why she tends to act that way, especially with the more recent issues she's starred in.
Lanolin, unlike all the rest of the cast, is a novice. She only seemed to have joined the Restoration during the Metal Virus, and the Eggperial City mission was her first time as leader. She even states herself that she's bossy and inexperienced in Issue 58.
The sheep's still got a lot to learn about leadership, so I think we can probably expect some more slip-ups on her part.
Hey, thanks for the ask! Sorry for the delay, but I had to catch up on the comics before I could answer this fairly.
I hear you completely, and you are correct. She IS new, and is a bit deserving of some lenience in that regard. However, I think that’s my central problem with her: she’s very new, and yet she speaks like the most experienced person in the room.
The way she critiqued Silver and chided him despite having ZERO experience with psychokinesis was incredibly irritating.
Tumblr media
I understand she’s the “leader” of the Diamond Cutters, but she speaks with an authority that she truly hasn’t earned. If she’s so new, why is she the one taking so much charge and training people with the experience she doesn’t have? Seriously, out of all of the Diamond Cutters (core and “in training”), Lanolin has the least experience.
Also, I respect that Lanolin’s attitude and neuroticism is played for laughs, but it truly just reads as malicious to me—especially towards Tangle. It’s made clear in writing and through visual gags repetitively that not only does Lanolin has an objective problem with Tangle as a person, but she doesn’t seem to respect Tangle enough to communicate with her effectively.
It goes so far as to feel like Lanolin would prefer to outright replace Tangle if she had the choice in issue 62.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And it’s not even like it’s a silly joke for Tangle. She’s shown multiple times to actively dislike this bullying.
Again, she’s new. I get that. But if there’s a whole scene in issue 58 dedicated to the fact that she’s new and bossy and knows she should be better, why is no effort being made? It’s not cute to acknowledge your flaws only to amplify them later on.
Tumblr media
I don’t know.
I don’t find this kind of character endearing. Lanolin comes off as an insecure girl who lacks empathy, which feels silly and mean to say about a fictional sheep, but she doesn’t even seem to be on some sort of character arc. This is just… who she is. And I find that incredibly disappointing.
(she actually might be on a character arc, and I really hope she is)

ohhh god. oh no. tangle is CLEARLY super nervous here- she's sweating, and has no idea what to do- but she's making jokes and trying to smile and even laugh, because first of all, she wants to be a hero-
does trying to be witty to divert attention away from disastrous situations remind you of anyone. anyone with blue quills and pronouns.
-And she even did this during the metal virus arc, when she literally fucking died. Tangle is desperately trying to keep the team together- she doesn't want it to fall apart, and won't let that happen- she's trying to reassure everyone, but Lanolin's just done with it. Every mission they've ever been on- From the metal virus (Where a pissed-off Lanolin appeared in the background) to Surge,- they escaped by the skin of their teeth. They're barely scraping by- and Lanolin was on the sidelines then. She's now being referred to as boss, by Tangle, trying to cheer her up- basically Tangle's way of saying 'oh god. we're completely fucked. we need a plan or we're all fucking dead' (i mean. im exaggerating a bit but whatever) and Lanolin...just gave up.
She doesn't think she's cut out for it. She was desperate, needed help- maybe a distraction from life- or a way out of this place- or was done with all the destruction- I'm not sure yet, I don't exactly know her origin story, but either way, she joined the restoration and watched it crumble.
She watched leaders quit and falter, she watched the metal virus destroy their last 'bastion of hope', she watched the restoration that was supposed to rebuild, razed to the ground, forced to start all over again.
Tangle's terrified and she doesn't want to show it.
Lanolin's gave up and lost any hope.
Sonic's struggling, but trying to hide it.
And Blaze & Silver only just arrived-
And Whisper?
She's hurt. Not physically, atleast yet- but she's clearly emotionally hurt, her relationship with Tangle clearly strained at the moment-
But Tangle's struggling too, and she can't always be upbeat and cheery, but she can try, except the Whisper being upset with her isn't just painful for Whisper- it's painful for Tangle! She had no idea about Surge! She was trying to be nice- trying to honour their memory- and while it was a stupid, maybe even out of character decision- her intentions were pure, and she doesn't know why Whisper is so mad about it. Whisper has a right to be upset- but, for things to be fixed, they need to push past this and have a moment to talk about it.
The thing is, though?
Tangle already tried.
She tried talking to Whisper, but she's too mad to even want to talk.
Either they'll have a big argument, maybe eventually sorting things out, or Whisper will finally calm down- and they'll be able to talk things out.
But right now? The former seems more likely.
She just wants to fix things, but it seems like everyone else is too busy watching the flames burn it all down to try.

Guys we missed Lanolin’s birthday.
April 11th was when IDW Sonic’s second issue was released, featuring Lanolin the Sheep’s first background appearance
Tumblr media
Now she is not only a core member of the IDW Sonic cast,
Tumblr media
BUT ALSO the (understood)leader of the new Diamond Cutters
Tumblr media
idk about everyone else, but I’m counting April 11th as Lanolin’s bday, even if she was only background character back then

Summary: When Lanolin formed a new team, Tangle impulsively named them the Diamond Cutters. This was a choice that Whisper was not okay with, and when they're stuck in an intangible version of Eggman's city with no way out, it becomes time for them to talk about it—among other things. [Whispangle Fix-It for Issue #58]
From her perch atop the metal wall Whisper thought, This must be what ghosts feel like.
It wasn’t too strange a feeling. As a scout, she was used to going unnoticed by those around her. And after her team was killed, she made it a point to stay out of view even when she wasn’t scouting. It was different to be invisible even when standing among others, and more different still to feel as if she wasn’t actually part of the environment. She couldn’t feel the ground beneath her boots. But standing among Sonic, Tails, and the others without them seeing her didn’t bother her. Watching them move on without her—it was almost peaceful, even as Tangle shouted after them. It almost felt right.
Whisper didn’t know if there was an afterlife. But if there was, maybe this was how Claire and the others had felt when she and the wisps had to carry on after the murders.

ok as someone who has read archie And idw i genuinely dont understand where all the lanolin and sally comparisons are coming from. i often see people call lanolin a sally ripoff or say that shes an attempt at replacing sally or just otherwise compare the two and like. yeah they both hang around sonics friends and are leaders of their respective teams but they definitely are not similar enough to justify those comments. i think you guys just cant see a girl sonic character do anything cool without crying that she replaced sally

Unsure if you’ve answered this anywhere before (sorry if you have!) but! what are your thoughts on Lanolin if you’ve been keeping up with IDW?
Lanolin's been kind of a fascinating addition to the cast to me, now that she's been promoted to the main cast. I kind of love that Lanolin is unambiguously one of the heroes, but she's also, like... not very nice? But she's also not an antihero like Shadow. She's just a different type of hero than most of Sonic's friends. It would have been so easy to just make her the cute friendly sheep girl, but I think she's led to some really interesting internal and external conflicts by having such a different mindset from everyone else.
Sonic is a very Power Of Friendship type series, and most of the recurring heroes are friends with each other. IDW's heroes have slotted right into that. Tangle wants to be everyone's friend. Whisper is extremely introverted due to her past, but the point is to show her making new friends. Belle's in a similar boat. And Jewel got roped into the series because she was already Tangle's best friend.
And then you've got Lanolin, who's not really here to make friends. She's here to work. She wants to do good in the world, which is why she joined the Restoration... and then the Metal Virus Saga happened. Now she's tired and kind of jaded about all of it. She's a cog in the machine whose power is limited, having neither crazy superpowers like Sonic's friends nor any real structural power within the Restoration. So where Tangle wants to go on fun adventures and Whisper's (understandably) weighed down by her personal vendetta with Mimic, Lanolin is this third wheel who doesn't particularly care about any of that and just wants to keep the team focused on doing their job.
I can kind of understand why some might be put off by this new dynamic if they were fans of the way Tangle and Whisper operated before. But personally, I think it shakes things up in a really interesting way. I could easily see a world where Mimic's return felt like a retread of the Tangle & Whisper miniseries, but Lanolin has helped push things in a new direction. She feels like our representative of the rank and file grunts of the Restoration, and the embodiment of the responsibilities that being part of the Restoration entail. Tangle and Whisper can't just go off and do their own thing all the time anymore. For Tangle especially, it feels like the formation of the new Diamond Cutters is forcing her to grow up a little. The Restoration can't always just be this fun secret club where she gets to go on adventures with her girlfriend. It's a job.
But Lanolin's not infallible, of course. She's frequently wrong, and that leads to conflict. But I understand where she's coming from and why she is the way she is, and that makes her an interesting contrast to everyone else. She's also clearly still growing as a character, and learning how to work as a team without just seeing Tangle and Whisper as people to boss around. I'm sure that whenever she learns that Whisper really was right about Duo being Mimic in disguise, that's going to be a BIG moment for Lanolin, and I'm excited to see how that informs her continued evolution as a character.

So lately I’ve been very grateful for friends and read something that likened good ones to someone holding an umbrella over you in a downpour. Even when it’s just a silly text that gives you a smile on a shit day.
Anyway, thinking of that made me hanker for a prompt: AU, either Mulder or Scully stuck in a downpour when suddenly a handsome/pretty stranger opens an umbrella over their head.
Cheers to the real ones.
It’s raining.
It’s been raining forever, she thinks. Since she buried him, her belly like a full moon. Her belly pulling at her hips. Since she delivered his son and put lanolin on her chapped nipples and went shh, shh, through endless colicky nights full of Mylicon drops.
Since she handed the stranger - Vanessa, but still a stranger - her son and thought Eili, eili, lama sabachtani?
Raining since then, somewhere. Cold and grey and numbingly staccato. Raining, raining. The sky so fleecy and low.
She’s looking up at his apartment, as she does now; her belly flat as a Midwest highway.
“Jesus,” the man says, canting his umbrella over her as well. It’s a big golf umbrella, pied, as the most beautiful things are. “You look cold in this rain,” he says, tall and handsome as the surgeon she planned to marry once.
Once.
“I left it at work,” she says, a little breathless.
The man smiles down. “Jacob,” he says, and holds out his hand. He’s heterochromatic; one eye as blue as her own, as William’s. One eye as strange as Mulder’s.
“Dana,” she says, a little hitch in her voice. A little sob.
She’s cold and cold and cold, even with her hair grown out around her hollow face. Even with Doggett, who says “Agent Scully.”
Even with Skinner, who says, “Scully. Dana, DANA.”
***
Jacob, didn’t he fight an angel? Didn’t he wait fourteen years for the woman he loved? She’s drunk on a mid-range Beaujolais, can’t remember.
Fucks Jacob so she doesn’t freeze. Doesn’t burn. It’s good and warm and honest and she’s so very sorry. She’s so sorry, his lashes like the fringe on a velvet lampshade.
Scully sees his umbrella against the wall, wet and black and white. Furled like the wings of a bat as she leaves. The moon outside is a crescent. A rib. scythe.
“I love you,” she gasps, to no one. “I love you always.”
Grief is love with nowhere to go.
It’s drizzling, noncommittal and misty. “Spitting,” Mulder would say. Oxford.
He would say it, if he were here.
***
Jacob calls, even when the sun is shining.
She doesn’t answer. She looks away.
He calls less.
He doesn’t call.
***
“All things counter, original, spare, strange;
Whatever is fickle, freckled (who knows how?)
With swift, slow; sweet, sour; adazzle, dim;
He fathers-forth whose beauty is past change:
Praise him.”
