Steam Bullet Heaven Fest Kicks Off with Firepower Overload
There are endless dozens of shooters wreaking havoc in the Bullet Heaven playground right now, and today Steam started a gaming fest to highlight them plus a few other games that can just barely fit within the definition. Demos, upcoming games, Early Access titles and even a few fully-released games all populate the festival, not to mention a good number of sales.
It's interesting watching a new game genre form from the union of old ones. Whether it was dark souls marrying RPG elements with action combat or boomer shooters taking the principles of 90's shooters and adding modern improvements you never know what game is gonna lead to a new trend. The current one I've had my hands deep in is the survival autoscroller.
Vampire Survivors is the the one I hear the most about and the one I played first but I've also been playing Soulstone Survivors and Boneraiser Minions which both take the formula and swing it in different directions.
Soulstone is pretty similar to VS but cranks the progression to eleven and allows you to stack stats to high heaven and turn your funny little guy into a fuck machine that shits out millions of damage every few seconds and tanks the framerate. Its a little generic but there is A LOT to unlock.
Boneraiser trades weapons for a variety of upgradeable minions that attack for you while you dodge the enemies and you can even merge them to make stronger ones. It's my favorite one so far despite the 8-bit visuals based almost entirely on the fact that every other description is some sort of dick joke. It's also only $5 and worth double that IMO.
I really hope this genre doesn't die off like auto-chess did because I think there's still an incredible amount of variety that can be squeezed out it.

Stomping the Lords of the Void in Soulstone Survivors
It seems like a tough job, being a Void Hunter, but initially it’s not as difficult as it looks. A Void Hunter is a warrior with near-endless potential, starting off just a bit better than “capable” and working their way up to a screen-shaking magical inferno of monster-destroying carnage. It’s the standard Vampire Survivors-style arcade spectacle, but no less satisfying for being a familiar cycle of eternal power-ups both during the action and between rounds.
