is it not fucking bonkers to anyone else that for a while on this website asexuality was like a silly cringe punchline even to people who were ostensibly cool about aspec people as a whole. like even though i think we've abandoned it for the most part, i don't know that the dust has really ever settled. the idea of calling this tendency aphobia even in retrospect feels frivolous and childish to me because that's how talking about aphobia was seen for a very long time even though that is DEFINITIONALLY what that is.

#maybe it goes to show that i had a very comfortable upbringing irt gender and sexuality and stuff (shoutout 2 my lesbian mum xoxo) #but i think ace discourse is the one thing that has given me anything close to internalised xyz-phobia that shit was bad #like being aroace should not feel like an embarassing thing to admit to! especially not among lgbt people! #but that feels worse somehow. normie cishets don't know what a 'crazy acey in spacey' is. #this isn't in regards to anything specific btw i'm just thinkin abt it i'm just thinkin abt it i'm just thinkin abt it

Ruth

Ruth paces anxiously in the booth as she hears the sound of people coming into the auditorium below. Oh God, her anxiety.

She takes several shaky shallow breaths, trying to calm herself down so she doesn't vomit all over the soundboard.

It's okay, she tries to tell herself, it'll be fine. She's done tech for several shows. This is nothing new.

Soooo I'm still getting used to using a serger. I love it to pieces, best purchase, 1000/10 do recommend, it finishes seams so beautifully.

HOWEVER.

When I need to switch from serging to do, say, a cuff opening, where what would normally be in a seam, is opened up and finishes itself neatly, the transition between the two is not so pretty:

Raw edges, yuck. Don't like that.

I took some inspiration from @vinceaddams, in that I remembered he posted about a reinforcement at the vee of 18th century shirts, in particular the heart-shaped one seen in this post here: linky-link to the post

So I hunted through my fabric stores to find something that would contrast nicely with my ace plaid fabric, and found some spacey fabric that worked.

No more raw and fraying edge, doesn't show all that much when the sleeves are down, nice little peekaboo when my sleeves are rolled up; you can juuuuuuust barely see them in this pic:

Since we're almost at 2024, and coming out of all this horrendous aphobic discourse, I thought I'd put together a bunch of aromantic + asexual resources for people who are maybe questioning themselves, or want to know more (heck yes for learning!) Most of these are long form (Youtube videos/articles) because that's how I feel is best for learning, compared to shorter form content like TikTok.

Yasmin Benoit (she/her, aromantic asexual)

The first asexual activist I stumbled across all those years ago. She was infamously the reason for a lot of aphobic comments on twitter, because hey, she's also a lingerie model, and lord forbid somebody who identifies as asexual present... yknow. Sexy.

She's also a researcher, who's putting in the effort to depathologise asexuality and aromanticism, especially within psychiatry and mental health.

Ace Dad Advice (they/them, asexual/agender/queer)

AceDad is one of my favourite a-spec activists. Their simple, easily digestible posts on Instagram outlining the various aspects of asexuality, aromanticism and agender (the triple As lmao) are a comfort to read. There's also lots of affirming stuff on there that's helped me with my own spiraling thoughts.

They've also written a book about asexuality! Which is one that I've yet to read, but am looking forward to.
