Got the goods
Feat bonus Ramsès
Tumblr media
As I said, I won't read them before... September or October, depending on when I have the presentation for my thesis but at least they're here and I really can't wait to get back into reading for fun!
Also, I shopped these through Awesomebooks and got them for a really good price. Especially Strange Practice since it was used, but Pageboy was also cheaper than on a lot of websites, and I don't think it's owned by amaz*n so there's that

I’ve fallen out of taking regular pictures of my current reads the last few years due to reading more digitally - so I present, some of my recent(ish) favorites!

The 8 Highest Rated things I read in 2023
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Jigokuraku (The only thing I rated 5*s all year lmao)
5 Survive (4.5/5)
Coraline (4.5/5)
Vicious (4/5 one of the only books of Schwab's I truly enjoy. And would read again. I've read 7. Thoroughly Enjoyed Vicious, Enjoyed A Darker Shade of Magic, The Near Witch, Meh on A Gathering of Shadows, Letdown/kinda dislike but enjoy aspects of by Addie LaRue and Vengeful, Actively dislike Gallant)
Monstrous Regiment (4/5 HELL YEAH)
Strange Practice (4/5 Title was not a lie!)
Spinning Silver (If I had a nickel for every Rumpelstiltskin retelling I've read, I'd have 2 nickels. Which isn't a lot but it's weird that it happened twice. XD this one is the far superior one.)
Library of the Unwritten (4/5 Creative and fun! A thoroughly enjoyable read for me)

Rereading Strange Practice and recording my favourite quotes as I go. First up is a gem from Fastitocalon, settling into Ruthven's house while his copd improves.
'he’d never met a sanguivore quite so ineffably domestic, silver-screen looks and all. Ruthven ought to be wearing pearls and a frilly apron. Possibly with little bats on it. Slowly Fastitocalon was beginning to suspect himself of being ever so slightly feverish, if the quality of his thought process was anything to go by.'

"Don't you think it seems a little... backward, perhaps...to run around committing mortal sins in order to cleanse the world of sin and evil?"

Strange Practice
Chapter 1
Why are all the vampires so adorable??? Like, they’re genuinely some of the most charismatic and polite vampires I’ve ever seen in fiction?

(ID: Ruthven (white, black hair, silver eyes) and Grisaille (black, brown hair silvering on the ends, and red eyes). Both are vampires from the Greta Helsing series by Vivian Shaw. Image one is Ruthven lying in a bed, eyes closed and frowning as he speaks. We just see his shoulders and chest (though under covers). Image two, the "camera" moves back to reveal Grisaille sitting on the bed, his hand over Ruthven's. He is smiling and speaking, and Ruthven is smiling, not speaking. Both are wearing dark red pajamas. Text: Ruthven: Sorry, I'm not terribly entertaining at the moment. Grisaille: You don't have to be entertaining, you just have to be you, that's all. End ID).
This is a scene in Grave Importance by Vivian Shaw.

“I don't know how to do this, I don't know how to pray, I just asked questions, and there was not so much an answer as a drawing back: an invitation to speak words into that emptiness, and have them be heard.”

Yeah, I am a little tired of the animal fiction that takes it upon itself to demonize zoos, conservation centers, responsible captivity and ex situ.
Yes, there are bad zoos, but there are also good ones. And I don't give a shit if 200 years ago it wasn't a good thing. Today their main objective and purpose is the conservation of species and that is a very important thing.
