I honestly never got the xander hate. His bad moments was his insecure little boy moments shining through ( which made sense he was abused by his parents) compared to others crimes it was minimal. Same with them hating him during mutiny scene the guy was traumatised! He’s a normal human that Giles never bothered to train he’s not a soldier it was amazing he didn’t go insane tbh ( not downplaying others having trauma but xander was meant to be the most normal/ human one so realistically he could of gone of deep end and i think if he didn’t love the group he would of spiralled hard probably turn to alchol like his parents)
To be fair, I do think there are moments to dislike Xander for. 3x02 comes to mind, 2x22, and the general way in which he antagonized Angel purely because of Buffy's love for him and how entitled to Bufyf he acted for much of the early seasons. It's fine that he had a crush on her but Xander was SUCH a baby about it and his toxic masculinity reared its ugly head. The problem with writing realistic teen boys is that teen boys happen to be the worst, sometimes, as was Xander's attitude about Buffy some of the time. Like dude take a hint and get over it, you're not the first person in history to have an unrequited crush. Insecurity and his upbringing only works as an excuse up to a point, and I don't agree with trying to compare his actions to others' mistakes because it's not about that. Sure, there were literal demons on this show and even the good guys did messed up stuff but that shouldn't negate Xander's occasional jerkass behaviour. Especially because he represents human normality and should therefore be held to that standard, not mystical war crimes.
That said, I overall agree with you. Xander's had more redeeming moments than he did annoying or outright bad ones. To a point, I can understand where the hate against him comes from, I really can. He can be a frustrating character to try and root for and a lot of his stuff not only didn't age well but also wasn't even appropriate for an ostensibly feminist show of the late 90s. Nor do I think he always earned his role as the team's heart. But! Xander is far more layered than his worst moments and even I, infamous Finn Hudson hater think we should cut him some slack and not be too harsh on the ch for the sake of it. I really do feel like a lot of the Xander hate is for the sake of it and actively trying to not like the guy and I don't agree with that kind of hive mentality of collectively hating on him. And even if you can't bring yourself to like him, which, fairs, he's still an integral part of the series and ignoring him altogether is cutting the metaphorical heart out of your equation.
Tumblr media
I think blaming him, of all people, during the mutiny scene is 100% unwarranted. There were plenty of times when he was way harsh on Buffy or didn't take her side when he should have but in this case I completely understood him taking a step back and not defending her. Xander roused the Potentials into following Buffy into that vineyard and he lost an eye for it. Even the trauma of it aside, he had logical reasons to doubt her.
I do feel like it sucks that Giles treated him as a joke, too, but that's a rabbit hole of its own. Again I don't think Xander always earned his title as the heart and the normal everyday guy but, particularly in the later seasons, he tries his best and is there when people need him. His feelings of insecurity are understandable and, as shitty as it was how he went about it, even his decision to call off the wedding came from an understandable place. I think it shows that he was essentially the token guy in a room full of empowered women on a show that was, crucially, largely written and run by men, so he defaults into toxicity on occasion. I dislike his entitlement to Buffy and making the group's decisions and I simply dislike the more stereotypically teenage boy things like constantly sexualizing women around him. But Xander is far from being all bad and he doesn't suck nearly as bad as people warned me he would. Some of the criticism is warranted but he seems overhated for the sake of it to me and, though I myself struggle with him, I think to ignore him and his validity in analysis is to fundamentally misinterpret BtVS as a whole.

Spuffy and TwelveClara are not twins but they have so much DNA in common. Immortal trying, despite his nature (or maybe not??) to be a good person and young woman who's thrust into these situations of terror and responsibility and dies twice and who's like half in love with him and half ready to kick his ass, but he's devoted to her to the point of self destruction. Sorry I'm rambling.
i think they have some similarities for sure!! but spuffy, at first, is really based on genuine hatred mixed with desire, of course- twelve and clara are kind of the opposite because she fell in love with him as eleven and then their dynamic changes and becomes really dark later on, based on how much they grow to love each other despite trying not to.
and re: spike. i think his journey is him fighting his nature of being GOOD not him being bad, the villain thing is a façade- william crying in an alley is who he really is.
there is def the similarity of them becoming each other in the end, or in clara essentially becoming the doctor and spuffy becoming one person in the end (since he is her shadow) but i think their core dynamics are pretty different tbh.
i love this message though, i would've never really thought to compare them so i have to ruminate this lol but at the end of the day i think the doctor is just... Too Much of a character to be comparable with anyone else honestly. there is just no other character like the doctor.

I'm guessing you havent been exposed to a huge part of the Spike/Spuffy fandom that like to portray Spike as the innocent victim of the relationship in s6 and Buffy as the monster (just go on Elysian Fields where there are countless stories 'punishing' Buffy for how she treated Spike), I've even seen some that do blame Buffy for the SA in Seeing Red and there was a lot of vitriol towards Buffy from fans at the time of airing, I also think it's worth remembering that the show itself blames Buffy for how toxic the relationship got in S7 and completely sidesteps her trauma in favour of Spike's redemption arc
So we're gonna have to agree to disagree about how S7 dealt with the fallout of the S6 relationship, as I read it as the show blaming them both but the characters themselves differing on a person by person basis who gets blamed the most. Though I agree Buffy herself just kind of ignores her own trauma (which is, unfortunately, how she's been taught to deal with her trauma since season 1), which brings the cleanup of S6's loose threads to an unsatisfying conclusion in order to make room for all the new S7 story arcs. (Not just Spike's redemption arc, though as the ensemble dark horse there was definitely audience pandering going on where he was concerned.)
Though the behind the scenes information about Spike related arcs is really fascinating to me, just because it's wild to me just how much Joss Whedon apparently hated this character who so popular with the fans.
And I have run into the 'Spike is perfect, Buffy was the sole abuser' narrative from fans before, but on a whole that's always seemed like a smaller and less vocal portion of the fandom than the 'Buffy is blameless, Spike was the sole abuser' portion. But whether that's actually true or not... *shrugs* it all boils down to where I had my fandom experiences and how I've curated those experiences over the years. I've mainly read BtVS/Ats fic on FFnet, Twisting the Hellmouth, and Ao3 - though I've been slowly getting more into the fandom here on tumblr too. My experiences with Elysian Fields are pretty small, so if that's where the majority of the anti-Buffy, pro-Spike Spuffy fandom overwhelmingly wound up, then its no surprise I ran into the other side of the equation more often. (By the time I stumbled across Elysian Fields, I was already spoiled by Ao3 and more interested in other fandoms.) Especially as the anti-Spike, pro-Buffy side seems to be more likely to held by people who aren't Spuffy fans at all, so it pops up a lot regardless of whether it's a Spuffy fic or not.
(The perils of multi-shipping; running across the demonization of characters I like because their ship 'stands in the way' of other ships that I also like.)
I've actually gotten pretty good at curating my fanfic experience to either avoid fics that place the blamely solely on one or the other or at least stick to fics where the blame game is mild and moved on from quickly, but that's on fanfic sites. Here on tumblr I've run into a number of anti-Spike and/or Spuffy posts lately. And after having a particularly uncomfortable 'Buffy did no wrong, Spike is the worst thing ever' type takes cross my dash... I just kind of needed to vent a bit without derailing someone else's post. I definitely need to keep working to curate my experiences here on tumblr, but I'll get there.

20 Questions for Fic Writers
Thanks for the tag @lavender-lotion love u!!!
How many works do you have on ao3?
80 as of this week! 79 Teen Wolf and 1 WWDITS 😂
What's your total ao3 word count?
662,501. Which is insane to me. But I've already posted 78k so far this year!
What fandoms do you write for?
First and foremost is Teen Wolf. But I have a few works in WWDITS, Stranger Things, and Scream. Most of them are WIPs, and only one is posted to AO3.
Top five fics by kudos:
Hearts in the Byline, Steter, E, 62,395 words
Kinky Antics with the Pack (Kinktober 2022), Multi-Pairing, E, 53,103 words
The Empty-Nester Alpha, Steter, E, 16,306 words
Try, Try Again, Steterek, E, 35,241 words
Mask of Many Faces, Steter, M, 22,806 words
Do you respond to comments?
Yes! Sometimes I'm slow or it takes me a while, but I largely respond to all comments. Sometimes if I don't know what to say to a comment, I won't say anything, but that's pretty rare.
What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
Um. That is tough. I do love angst. I'm going to cheat and give two because they are angsty in very different ways. Major character death vs whump.
For This I'll Burn, No Pairing, E, 4,409 words
Sharing is Caring, Steterek, E, 15,322 words
What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
Also tough! I have a few that are very happy. But I think I have to go with:
The "No-Bite" Rule, Steter, M, 3,869
Steter HEA.
Do you get hate on fics?
Not often, thankfully. But yes, I have.
Do you write smut?
Sure do!
Craziest crossover:
I haven't written anything that's a crossover, I don't think. I do have a BTVS/Teen Wolf crossover in my long list of WIPs, though. Have the closest thing I have to a crossover - Sleeping Beauty AU.
That Gleam in Your Eyes, Deter, E, 7,393 words
Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Not that I know of!
Have you ever had a fic translated?
Yes! The "No-Bite" Rule was translated into Ukranian. Being asked by the translator if this was okay was a beautiful moment that made me incredibly happy. 💖
Правило "Жодних укусів"
Have you ever co-written a fic before?
I have not! But I would. Maybe @thotpuppy and I will write that baseball AU someday.
All time favourite ship?
It's so hard to pick, but it has to be Steter. I always come back to them.
What's a wip you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
I think it's pretty unlikely I'll ever finish my Stargent fic where Chris uses Stiles as a surrogate daughter after Allison's death. But never say never!
What are your writing strengths?
I'd say tone is my biggest writing strength. I try to have my works be very thematic and emotionally connected, and I think that comes across well for the most part.
What are your writing weaknesses?
Transitions! And action! I guess "movement" if I had to provide a single answer. This can cause my writing to feel very choppy and it's something I do acknowledge and try to work on.
Thoughts on dialogue in another language?
I'll do pet names, single word translations, things like that. I try not to write outside of what I know, though. Maybe someday I'll incorporate my rusty German into fic, who knows?
First fandom you wrote in?
MCU. Those works have been orphaned/abandoned. Good riddance lol. It's just been Teen Wolf since then. My (current) first fic on AO3:
Clean Plates, Sterek, T+, 3,118 words
Favorite fic you've written?
Oooooooooooh again. This is really hard. But I think it has to be:
Down to the Marrow, Steter, E, 23,206 words
Managing an unreliable narrator was not easy. But I'm so happy with the end result. And there's beautiful art by @tarantula-teeth. I love this fic with my whole heart.
No-pressure tags (and I'm sorry if you've already been tagged and I missed it!): @tarantula-teeth, @dear-massacre, @meggie-stardust, @punchedbymarkesmith, @aurevell, @midmorning-bomb, @vmures

Author Interview
tagged by @galadrieljones thank you!
1. how many works do you have on AO3?
57
2. what's your total AO3 word count?
197,188
3. what fandoms do you write for?
Dragon Age, Uprooted (Naomi Novik), Wayfarer IF, Final Fantasy XIV.
only the latter two in the past year.
4. what are your top five fics by kudos?
Temporal Arrangements (Dragon Age Inquistion, Solavellan, E) Time Travel canon-divergent AU
Home (Uprooted - Naomi Novik, Sarkan/Agnieszka, T) Canon coda
Ar Lath Ma (Dragon Age: Inquisition, Solavellan, T)  Post canon fix it fix
Pies (Uprooted - Naomi Novik, Sarkan/Agnieszka, M ) post happily ever after domestic fluff
Temerity (Dragon Age: Inquisition, Solavellan, E) post canon enemies/not really enemies bdsm smut
5. do you respond to comments?
I try to respond to all of them! I love getting comments and when I comment I love getting replies on comments myself.
I may forget though, and I'm sorry! I love comments
6. what is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
God Slayer (Solavellan, T) I really like this one.
7. what's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
Most of my fics have happy endings, though I really like them with a tinge of uncertainty or bittersweetness.
the most straight up happily ever after is probably Hay, (Solavellan, E) which is just a very self-indulgent little happy fic.
8. do you get hate on fics?
I don't think I ever had?
9. do you write smut? if so, what kind?
I do write smut! I love writing smut, it's such a good challenge and it makes me happy. I love characterization through smut - and it's such an interesting way to do characterization. That said, sometimes I'm just thirsty and I want to see two characters smash. I'm not pretentious about it. I'm here to have fun and I don't think there's anything wrong with wanting to read or write porn.
I write all sort of smut? I do love playing with power dynamics in sex scenes.
10. do you write crossovers? what's the craziest one you've written?
The closest I've written is Comfort, a Solavellan vampire fic, which uses some BtVS lore? It's not crazy tho!
11. have you ever had a fic stolen?
Not that I know of!
12. have you ever had a fic translated?
Not that I know of either. I think I'd be a little apprehensive.
13. have you ever co-written a fic before?
nope. I'm not sure how i'd do that? writing feels like a solitary thing, even when asking for feedback and input.
The closest is a shared timeline/ideas where my OC interact with another person's OC and both of us wrote in the same continuity.
14. what's your all-time favourite ship?
hmmm. Once I've not written for and probably never will, Spike/Buffy.
if it's writing for, I'd say it's still Solavellan.
15. what's a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
I think if I want to finish it, I will? I have some old WIPs, but the reason I'm not finishing them is lack of want? Do or do not kinda thing I think.
16. what are your writing strengths?
I've told I've had good pacing. I think I write pretty good smut.
17. what are your writing weaknesses?
Descriptions? I tend to not want want to describe things. I'm also not great at moving characters through space - he went to the door, he looked out etc? I tend to slip into passive voice when writing characters moving around unless it's combat action or sex.
18. thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?
nope.
"Hello," he said in Spanish
is perfectly valid.
A few short words like endearments - where the speaker would use a specific term in a different language than what's spoke is fine. Items that are specific and not translatable and would typically be borrowed words in a different language are fine too (kimono. computer. kayak)
19. first fandom you wrote for?
Dragon Age
20. favourite fic you've written?
This is SO hard. I was just looking at some old fics I really really love?
but I think right now, I'll pick my newest fic, Passing Through (wol/Tansui, E) because I love it very much and I had so much fun with it.

Yes. I like to have conversations with people and I like to know what they're thinking about when it comes to my writing. I'm super behind on responding to them rn though.
6. What’s the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
The Art of Seclusion lol (so far. my unpublished My Hero Academia fic might be angstier. It'll depend if I get free reign or if my character cooperates tbh)

Uhhh....Caught in the Crossfire? Or some of my oneshots.
8. Do you get hate on your fic?
I have, but not much.
9. Do you write smut?
Yes.
10. Do you write crossovers?
Hahaha, yes. Caught in the Crossfire is a bit of a huge crossover with characters from other fandoms appearing in Supernatural.

Dialogue.
17. What’s your writing weaknesses?
Description lolll

Hahaha, Archie Comics when I was a kid.
20. Favourite fic you’ve ever written?

9 people you'd like to get to know better
Got a few of these & each one has slightly different questions, I'm just gonna combine them here haha. Thanks @erisenyo @chiptrillino and @isaac !
Three ships: zukka (ofc), andriel (lol), and... idek, i guess marichat (unfortunate)
First ever ship: first ship i remember getting into was spuffy (btvs) (i think i was like. 5) but first one i got involved in fandom for was frerard
Last song: "Common People" by William Shatner lolll. as much as that song is bizarre for existing (william by covering that song you became exactly the kind of person it's about), it's a real fuckin jam my god. the way it accelerates and the two voices get increasingly intertwined as it goes on is mesmerizing to me
Last film: I think Paranormal Activity a few weeks ago? I've been on a haunting kick. if anyone has good ghost/possession/etc recommendations i'd love them
Currently reading: went through a few more stories from Gothic Fantasy's Asian Ghost Short Stories collection, I've been reading it for ages but it's always a good time. of the ones I read recently my fave was "The Magnanimous Girl" by Pu Songling. it's super short but i loved the girl lol
Currently watching: just finished the Plagiarism and You(tube) video by hbomberguy (highly recommend), but more generally i've been watching a lot of Phasmophobia gameplay vids and streams (again, I'm fr on a haunting kick)
Currently consuming: just some black tea
Currently craving: shrimp lo mein mmmm
Sweet/spicy/savory: savory and spicy! over the years my tolerance for sweet stuff has gone way down
Last thing I googled: "excellerate spelling" 😔 the worst part is that i know this will happen again
Favorite color: my answer changes every time depending on what context a color is in, but most of the clothes in my wardrobe are dusty reds/merlots so i guess that's an indication it's my favorite? also an indication i'm fire nation
Relationship status: single
Currently working on: a zukka ghost story which, given my recent track record for finishing fics, probably won't see the light of day. also been doing a bunch of drawing studies of people kissing, for reasons. what i really should be doing is getting a job, but that feels like walking off a cliff, so I'm avoiding it
This is so long lol sorry!! I'm sure a lot of people have already answered one or many of these, idkkk @fanfic-gremlin-ft-trauma @ozais-lobotomist @transboyzuko @odorumeruhentokei @yayee-prsp @honeyedsunlight @somethingfoamy @haroldtea @sulkybender
anyone else who sees this pls feel free to take it! and tag me, i wanna see

I was tagged by @storiesofsvu so let's goooo
How many works do you have on AO3?
I have 45 I believe
2. What's your total AO3 word count?
229,358 words apparently
3. What fandoms do you write for?
Criminal Minds, Station 19, MCU, DCEU (and the Arrowverse), BTVS... am I forgetting something?
4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
I'm Yours Too
The Collapse
New Addition
Sin For Me
Maybe This Time
5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
Eh yeah sometimes. I get a couple that are backhanded compliments and I'm usually like "uh hey no."
6. What's the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
Probably... Break the Cycle... But I think there's going to a fic to beat that ending here soon.
7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
Turbulence for sure
8. Do you get hate on fics?
Like I said, backhanded compliments. Mostly on MTT because people didn't like the way I wrote reader for a bit, but it's a slow burn. Also weirdly on some Maya fics? Because people thought I was writing a Maya/Carina and that Carina was out of character when... she wasn't... in the fic...
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
oh ho ho ho... do I write smut... all kinds. All kinds.
10. Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written?
I don't unfortunately write crossovers and I don't think I ever will. ):
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
God I fucking hope not.
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
Again, I hope not. If someone ever translated my fic I'd like for it to be a team effort and for them to ask me and work with me on that. Or, preferably, I'd just do it myself depending on the language.
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
I've been asked a few times but I am very hard to get a commitment out of. That's my bad. One of these days I'll co-write a fic I'm sure! Hopefully with one of my faves, the great @demonicbaby666
14. What's your all time favorite ship?
Uhhhhh..... swan queen.......... I'm sorry
15. What's a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
My Villanelle one. I love that one so much but like... I don't think there's much interest in it and I kind of have turned my attention elsewhere.
16. What are your writing strengths?
I genuinely do not know. Maybe that I can capture a character's voice well sometimes? Y'all tell me.
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
I feel like I'm way too fucking repetitive and also punctuation has never been my strongest thing. The more German I learned in undergrad the worse my English punctuation and grammar got.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?
I mean I do it a tiny bit for Carina, but my Italian is severely limited to 1.5 classes of undergrad. Otherwise, unless there's randomly a German speaking character I'll write for in the future... I don't like doing it.
19. First fandom you wrote for?
Like ever? Technically Twilight fanfics lol but that was way back in the day. Officially for this blog and stuff? Criminal Minds and BTVS at the same time.
20. Favorite fic you've ever written?
Actually... it hasn't been posted yet but I know what it will be once it's done. But for now...
There's three for three different reasons:
I Wish I Was the Moon
Me & the Devil
Maybe This Time
Okay no pressure tags of course but I'm gonna tag @yelenas-poser @desperate-gay @imdoingsortagay and genuinely anyone else who follows me and wants to do it. (If you do please tag me I wanna read your answers lol)

can i jump on the spuffy/spike hate train real quick and say buffy's romantic life just nosedived after season 3? like we had 2 lost souls finding each other and falling in love, fighting together and listening to each other when they had a problem, communicating and caring all around, saving each other, protecting each other, list goes on. just healthy and fulfilling all around. and all of that just went away and we got f*bois in the military or whatever, ghost flings, and the cherry on top: we wrapped the show up with an abusive and violent incel with mommy issues whose only "bad boy" traits are throwing temper tantrums 😵😵😵 not even mentioning the mental, emotional scars he left on buffy but i really could write an essay on this and probably will cause I cant wrap my head around it
Hey there! Of course you can jump on that train any day any time over here LOL. I agree with parts of what you wrote and disagree with other parts. It’s a bit of a complicated situation, I think, but in my opinion, Buffy's love life was always a hot mess!
I do agree with the way you described Buffy and Angel’s relationship, and I think it was the most balanced out of all her relationships. They shared a deep mutual love, respect, support, they allowed each other the space to be flawed and to make mistakes but when all was said and done, they were always forgiving, kind, and communicative with each other; their dynamic was never one sided or unbalanced, and you never questioned their love and devotion to each other. But I do think that their relationship wasn’t the most healthy at certain points due to the external obstacles constantly being thrown at them, both of them being inexperienced in love, and also experiencing their first true love in each other. The show doesn’t shy away from addressing the issues/obstacles: he’s a vampire, she’s a slayer, he’s older than her (although in practice, I don’t believe that the age gap is an issue in terms of a power imbalance between them but it is presented as a road block for them getting together initially in terms of his vampirism/the star crossed-ness of it all), the curse, everything that happened with Angelus, etc. Ultimately, we have to remember that these are two people who have gone through a lot of trauma together (and apart), and it’s completely realistic and understandable that their relationship isn’t going to be 100% healthy all the time but that’s also what makes it so interesting and that’s why we get so invested; we want them to make it despite all the issues. The tragedy of Buffy and Angel is that they work so well together as people but they can’t be together due to external forces! THE star-crossed lovers! Also, let’s be completely honest here, none of the relationships on both BTVS or ATS are truly healthy lol
Now in terms of Buffy’s other relationships, I do think that Riley made complete sense as a boyfriend, narratively speaking. He was the rebound, the normal boyfriend, the guy you date in college when your life is changing and you want to try something new. I do believe that Buffy was happy with him and that she cared about him deeply, even loved him in a way, but ultimately, it wasn’t a relationship that was going to last due to his toxic insecurities and their fundamental differences. I think the way that relationship played out was realistic and I think he was what Buffy needed at that time in her life. Unpopular opinion but I don’t think that Riley gets enough credit in fandom discourse for the space that he held in Buffy’s life and heart (regardless of how problematic he was). He was technically her boyfriend for the longest period of uninterrupted time and she shared things with him that she couldn’t share with Angel or Spike (because they're vampires).
As for sp*ffy, I completely agree with everything you wrote lol
Sp*ffy could have been an interesting exploration of a toxic and destructive relationship as a result of Buffy’s resurrection but the way the show went about it was so terrible. The introduction of Spike’s feelings in S5 was so creepy but the creepiness was just played off for laughs (I wasn’t laughing), it also served no purpose other than being an excuse to make him relevant on a show he clearly didn’t fit in. The way that in S6, the narrative heavily implies that Buffy is the one in the wrong for engaging in an abusive relationship with him and the way this narrative continues into S7, after he sexually assaults her, is despicable. The way they have to strip her of everything in her life to make sp*ffy even happen. What’s even worse is how it’s handled in S7. The way the story becomes completely about Spike and his “redemption”, leaving no room for Buffy to process her trauma, once again isolating her from everyone in her life and making her defend her abuser all season. The biggest problem with sp*ffy is that it’s all about Spike….Buffy gets nothing positive out of it. I'm watching BTVS for BUFFY, I truly do not give a shit about Spike lol. It’s really not surprising that a story revolving around a petulant misogynist who can’t take no for an answer from the women he’s obsessed with, would be so terrible.
I’m so sorry this got so long lol I got a little carried away!
Thanks for the ask 😊

honestly, i think a huge source of the conflict between btvs fans- especially as it pertains to fucking shipcourse- is the commonality of judging some characters’ morality on a watsonian level & others on a doylist one based on personal bias/convenience, & then acting as though this is fair treatment.
& as stated, this especially applies to shipcourse, particularly as it pertains to angel & spike, but also things like the hypocrisy surrounding how characters like the scoobies or faith, or the fuck ups within the phenomena of various instances magical sex get treated by the audience at large.
for example, if you are claiming to be fair/equitable, & you are going to judge spike for seeing red, you have to judge angel for dating a teen girl while being over 200 years old, or fully examine the issues with consent at play in what willow did to tara in once more with feeling, so on & so forth. & if you judge those instances based how they were influenced by out-of-universe factors, the same applies if you want to claim it is a reading that is not suffering from abject & blatant personal bias.
like, due to both the poor politics behind the scenes, and the era it was written in, Buffy fumbles the ball a lot in terms of its feminist messaging. we all know this. and yet, at a frequency i’m yet to witness in any other fan space, so often whether or not that gets taken into account when approaching character analysis & morality is entirely dependent on whether or not a character is liked by the speaker.
and this, in and of itself, isn’t a bad thing. i don’t mean to claim that, in fact it’s quite normal. but so often in the btvs fandom this approach is not only framed as equal, but also as the one true reading of the text as far as the speaker is concerned. and that is a problem because, inherently, judging characters by two different standards is an unfair approach that colours any reading with more bias than would otherwise present itself.
& mind you, i know that no one is obligated to be fair, people can do what they want & explore the text in the way they find most interesting. but i do think the reason so many portions of this fan-base are constantly at each other’s throats is because so many people refuse to just be upfront about that. like admittance that one is being unfair for personal enjoyment isn’t immoral, it’s just honest.

hsddsgjkhsgkj literally like the way btvs presented the romani as this Mystical Magical Group that they invented in the same way that they invented wolfram and hart or the fanged four, which in turn created this attitude within the fandom where it's seen as totally ok to criticize an ethnic group for being Bad And Wrong and to frame them so often in fic as this nebulous Other that jenny always has to be presented as at odds with or separate from because she's One Of The Good Ones. i always feel a little crazy about the fact that the only Good romani woman we see on btvs is someone who is super americanized and modernized and redeemed by her ties to modernity! redeemed because she is able to grow past and out of the limiting old world traditions! so she's not one of THOSE romani people. she's DIFFERENT.

I’ll repost what I said elsewhere on the subject, but I just - I don’t understand the ‘Xander is Joss’s Insert’ meme. Like, one bit.
---
This meme that Xander is Joss’s Self-insert is rooted entirely in the fact that Xander didn’t age well, and since many people refuse to try and understand the character in context, they dismiss his fault as a ‘Self-Insert’ because we all know Joss sucks now.
But it’s not that simple. A whole cast of writers, not just Joss, wrote Xander, and if Xander is a Self-insert, he’s the most ridiculed, loser and useless self-insert I’ve ever read. Joss actively rejected ever pairing Buffy and Xander, even when Sara Michelle Gellar and Nicholas Brendan suggested it for Season 7.
Xander is a loser (affectionate) and the show’s Butt Monkey. That’s not SI material in 99% of cases, because SIs are power fantasies by general nature.
The only coherent arguments I’ve ever seen for the ‘Xander as Joss’s SI’ are A) He gets a few girls who are ‘too hot’ for him (which, while coherent, is assuming one’s own taste is universal) or B) He occasionally acts as an actor mouthpiece with some of his speeches, and he yells at Buffy at times when the show (sometimes) suggests he’s in the right (such as in Into the Woods) but he’s also presented as in the wrong (Dead Man’s Party).
But every character gets to be a Writer’s Mouthpiece from time to time. Willow in Reptile Boy, Spike in Lover’s Walk, Buffy in Amends, Giles in I Only Have Eyes for You, the list goes on and on.
---
I mean, I have usually been pretty good at seeing why people have different fannish opinions than me on characters, ships, situations. While I think most hate towards Xander is unfair or inaccurate, I can understand it. I can even understand why Xander gets hit with Fandom Double Standards the way he does.
But this meme about being an Insert for Joss? The only semi-coherent explanation I can think of is that people want to just blame Joss for everything they didn’t like in BtVS, and not give him credit for what they didn’t. Or they decide that since Joss sucks, and Xander ‘sucks’, those two must be related somehow.
And that just makes less than no sense.

Writer Asks
I was tagged by my old friend and Casey/Olivia shenanigans buddy, @dinovia-grant
1. How many works do you have on AO3? A big, fat goose egg, sadly. Somewhere, out there, I have an old site I haven't updated in years. And fic on other sites, but I never migrated them all to AO3. One day, maybe... My ancient website, broken graphics links and all, can be found here: http://xenafiction.net/shaylynnrose/playground.htm Other fics and such that I've written can be found on Passion and Perfection: http://www.ralst.com/
2. What’s your total AO3 word count? unless my comments count, zero.
3. What fandoms do you write for? When I do write, Xena/Gabrielle, Casey/Olivia, Sam/Janet, Janeway/Seven, Emily/JJ, BtVS: Willow/Tara, Willow/Kennedy, Buffy/Amy, Buffy/Faith, Faith/Cordelia, Kate/Elizabeth, Kerry/Kim, as well as my own original characters.
4. What are your top five fics by kudos? Never gotten any kudos, but I think I had the most engagement from Resurrection is for the Unbelievers, simply because I posted it in regular parts back in the LiveJournal days. I know i had a lot of good feedback on the various things I had written, but they were personal emails, which I cherish and look back upon with strong fondness. It makes me happy that something about my stories touched others.
5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not? I almost always responded to comments, good or bad, just because it meant something to me that my work had inspired someone to say something about it.
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? Possibly a Xena fic, one that was quite short, called Solitude. It was set during the Bitter Suite era, which overall, was quite angsty.
7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? There's an old movie, The Pirate Movie, that I latched onto as a kid, because of the song, "Happy Ending" and so...uh, I'm pretty sure everything I write has at least the glimmer of a happy ending, if not a total rainbows and puppy dogs ending...even if the characters had to slog through heck and squishy toast to get there.
8. Do you get hate on fic? Ages and ages ago, I got one of the most confusing emails I've ever seen. It was so badly written that I'd accuse it of being spewed out by an AI, except this was literally in the 90s, so I don't know if AI was a thing then...it might have been hate, or it might have been someone's drunken ramblings, I'm not terribly sure. I think the worst I've truly gotten was comments about how atrocious my grammar or editing was, and I don't consider that hate, just good criticism.
9. Do you write smut? Yes and No. Most of my published fanfic is fairly tame. Even my currently published original fiction is fairly tame...things I've been working on and dabbling with that are still unfinished and may or may not ever see the light? Definitely not tame.
10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written? Yes. Absolutely. Resurrection is for the Unbelievers is a mega crossover between Angel: The Series, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, a Dracula movie, and eventually, Criminal Minds. This is probably my craziest in terms of seriously different fandoms.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen? Many moons ago, back before even LiveJournal was a thing, someone posted one of my Xena fics to their site without asking. I asked them to remove it, and after some discussion, they did. They'd credited me, but I hadn't given them permission to post it.
12. Have you ever had a fic translated? Actually, yes. A long time ago, I had someone ask to translate a couple of my pieces and I said yes. I...really don't remember which ones, though. I've slept many, many times since then. I hope they're still out there, though.
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before? Several times. I'm currently co-writing with a friend. Nothing to publish as yet, but it's a lovely way to get better at many things.
14. What’s your all-time favourite ship? Of what I've written? I'd have to see Kate/Elizabeth simply because I invented it in terms of looking a two characters from different media and said, "They'd really make a great couple". Outside of that, I'd have to proffer the OG, Xena and Gabrielle...they're the ones who got me writing, who got me interacting with internet fandom as a whole, and made me a lot of friends...many of whom I still know, and one of which has been one of my closet friends since 1996.
15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but probably won’t? I have too many to name, but I'll through out the name of an unpublished piece called The Broken. It's a marvelous monstrosity that I worked on for over ten years with a friend...and we abandoned it because it had gotten too convoluted and silly and really, just completely lost its way. But I learned so, so much while writing it. I'll forever be grateful for its existence.
16. What are your writing strengths? Dialog, world building, emotive descriptions, romance, and I'd say I'm not too bad with action sequences if I put my mind to it.
17. What are your writing weaknesses? I'm too wordy and I suck at grammar. And I love adverbs and will die on the hill that they are a necessary part of dialog...but I do overuse them, especially when writing a first draft. I don't like doing a ton of research, either. I'd rather make it up unless I really need to know something. Good thing I generally write fantasy LOL.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic? I don't write well in any other languages...I've had 2 years of high school French, but that was over 30 years ago.
19. First fandom you wrote for? On the page, that people could read? Xena: Warrior Princess, but I was making up stories about Charlie's Angels and other TV shows I loved for years. In the sixth grade, a friend of mine and I had a Wonder Woman (TV series) fanclub where we all spun around and pretended to be amazons out to save the day...so what if it was me and two boys who were telling each other these stories. We were having fun and extending the mythos of a show we loved.
20. Favourite fic you’ve written? Resurrection is for the Unbelievers is probably closest to my heart because of the work I put into it, but I love all my story children, even the ones whose existence has slipped to the back of my mind. They were all words that had to get out and show themselves off to the world.
(small disclaimer, all of the above was written while veeery tired, so if there are typos, I'm sorry.)
I tag whoever wants to have at this thing and have fun telling the world about your work. No specific callouts because frankly, I bet most of y'all have already answered this thing.

My first media review in ages! I know I said last year I'd get to Legends and Lattes as soon as I was in a headspace to write about the stories I listen to when hiking, but I'm not going to lie, saying I would review it and then forgetting about it entirely basically is my review of that book. All set up and no pay off.
Today's review is the new audible original audio drama: Slayers: A Buffyverse Story by Christopher Golden and Amber Benson.
Before anything else we have to talk about the frankly confusing discourse I've seen around Slayers. I have been following all of the new comics coming out connected to BTVS so I've honestly been shocked by this "Buffy is being disrespected and erased" discourse? There is one current long term ongoing series. This series is called The Last Vampire Slayer, and is about a world where all of the Scoobies as well as all of the Slayers save for Buffy were brutally killed years ago. Now an older jaded Buffy has to deal with a young Slayer (the only one she knows of who was not killed upon being called) who has tracked her down to beg to be trained by Buffy. Before it became an ongoing series, it was a miniseries about the young slayer talking Buffy into training her (the fact she is Willow and Tara's orphaned daughter got Buffy to decide to keep the kid from dying), which I will admit is all I read because that was all I needed to know that series really wasn't for me. I'm not a fan of that level of dark and gritty.
Honestly, the whole "Buffy is being erased" thing feels like a game of telephone being played with second hand information.
People of course tend to point to the short miniseries that recently came out where Faith arrives in Sunnydale in a position of power. The Scoobies look to her as the person in charge, because just before she arrived in an effort to try and help Buffy with her magic Willow accidentally took away Buffy's powers. This leads Willow down the path of becoming Dark Willow, and once the comic establishes Faith in her confident established position, the powerless Buffy saves the day from Dark Willow and gets her powers back in the process - reinforcing for the millionth time that Buffy doesn't need her powers to be the best at this (as in she figures out what is happening, tracks Willow down, gets Faith to act as her backup, and then saves the day). Oh, also that comic ends with canonical Buffy/Faith, Xander/Spike and Willow/Tara so color me confused about why the fandom hated it so much.
Before that we had a few other comics all of which were, of course, centered around Buffy, including a long running ongoing (the main Boom! Buffy comic) essentially about how Buffy was the best Vampire Slayer across the multiverse, where there is a massive battle across the multiverse with many different Buffys (complete with musing about how one writes Buffy in plural so truly all spellings including Buffi are valid here) and multiple multiverse traversing characters make it clear that Buffy is special because she is so important in so many worlds.
Ok, so all of that said - and here is the key thing that confuses me - this is an audio where the main draw is the original BTVS cast are reprising their roles.
Buffy fans know that neither Sarah Michelle Geller nor Allison Hannigan have ever, ever, in the history of BTVS supplementary materials, played their roles. Not for the PS2 game Chaos Bleeds (where literally every other member of the cast played their character), not for the never actually picked up or aired animated series, not for the Season 8 motion comics. This is something Amber Benson (who was in Chaos Bleeds) and Chistopher Golden (who wrote Chaos Bleeds) would most assuredly know from the start of the plotting process. It is also possible they were asked and said no - all of that said, truly the chances of either of those actresses appearing was less than zero.
That means there were two options - recast them the way those prior projects did (which dragged alllllll of them down and would muddy the whole ORIGINAL CAST RETURNS appeal) or write a story that makes sense without them (or Xander, but truly fuck him and I am glad to report he's only name checked like one time in the entire story). So of course Buffy does not appear in the story (although a wild drinking game would be to take a shot every time anyone talks about how amazing she is. In the story itself Cordelia demands that Spike, Clem, Giles and Indira stop talking about how great Buffy is all the time because it was getting old). This also means that as amazing as the cliffhanger at the end was, it felt more like a massive bone being thrown to the fans for the purpose of fanfiction rather than setting up any future story, since obviously they will NOT be able to continue with the set up plot due to casting concerns.
Ok - so now to review the audio itself. I will confess, I was not a fan of Spike's narration at the start of each episode. But my irritation with him evened out as the story went on and the cast moved past Spike and Clem. I loved the fact that our new character Indira is a massive fangirl, there to endlessly exclaim over how cool Buffy is as she tags along. I loved the way the alternate universe was used to explore different versions of the characters we know and love. Cordelia as a jaded Slayer with PTSD was fascinating, as was Anya as the lone witch left on the side of good freaking out over having to face down her best friend. Evil Tara and her relationship with Dru was of course an absolute delight. But of course the role that most impressed me - and the only actor in the audios who sounded 100000% exactly the same as she did back when the show was airing - was Drusilla. Wow, talk about an incredible performance from Juliet Landau. I also really loved the role Clem played in the audio, it was so great to have him fleshed out more and playing such a key role in the cast.
Actually ok, I lied a bit, another actor's voice was fairly unchanged and immediately recognizable. That of course was someone I was not excepting to hear and I actually shouted when that character popped up because well... with the amount of success that actor has achieved I didn't think they'd be here. But through the power of their personal friendship with Amber Benson, there they were! That was a really fun surprise cameo and I am not going to spoil who (although if you are curious this actor's inclusion in the cast is listed on the internet).
There were a few such cameos - the audio did a great job folding in those fun little reward moments for Buffy nerds. Also it gave us Anyanka as a yappy dog? I did not know I needed to hear Emma Caulfield Ford play a vengeance daemon as a tiny dog, but I am so glad this audio gave it to me.
I don't want to spoil too much of the story, but I very much had a blast listening to this, and would highly rec. it. As much as I really really really loved the ending and would love to read a million fics exploring what happens next in that universe, I am pretty sad that it is unlikely we will be getting the story the cliffhanger implies.
Truthfully I really hope this audio is not a one off and we can look forward to more Buffyverse audios in the future. Plus, who knows, maybe if they are successful enough even SMG may one day get involved (although I feel that really is a long shot).
