39. "Here, let me carry you"

Listen i can not believe the first thing that popped to mind for these angst prompts was college au, but here we are. Enjoy the pining.

...

Sana wasn’t even drunk.

That was the pathetic part. Not a drop of alcohol in her system. She’d just been in such a rush to get the hell out of there, she’d managed to miss the curb and completely twist her ankle.

She could easily call someone for help; Dahyun was doing absolutely nothing tonight, she’d proudly told her when Sana asked her plans. She could have had such a nice, calm night with her lovely little baby dubu.

Jihyo and Jeongyeon had offered their plans, too. An arcade across town, which sounded like a ton of fun. The two of them and a few drinks was never a bad combo, they’d find fun in anything.

But nope. She had to go to this party, because to her stupid brain the only thing that mattered was spending time with one person.

One very, very uninterested person, according to the last twenty minutes of her life. One very forgetful person, evidently, who can’t remember to lock the fucking bathroom door when she’s getting busy with that orange-haired girl from her econ class.

So she didn’t want to call someone. She wanted to sit here in self-pity, under the yellow streetlight on a curb on frat row, because the universe so clearly wanted her to suffer and she was going to let it win.

She let her head fall into her hands.

“…Sana?”

Oh, fuck.

“Hey, I’m, uh, I’m really sorry about before. I must have forgotten to hit the lock, I was, uh, a little… distracted.”

Sana winced. Cleared her throat and took a deep breath, spoke as cheerfully as she could manage to the cobblestone street.

“No, Momo, my bad. I should have knocked. Didn’t expect anyone to be- Didn’t expect that.”

“Really, I…I’m sorry you had to see that. I understand if it’s… awkward and you don't want to see me.”

“I didn’t really see anything, Momo, her head kinda blocked everything.”

Momo couldn’t hold back the awkward laugh; Sana could tell she tried to.

“Right. Yeah. Well I mean, you probably never wanted to know what my face looks like when-”

“Momo, please stop talking.”

“Yeah. Yup.” There was certainly a bit of alcohol in her system.

There were a few more seconds of silence. Sana still hadn’t looked at her.

“Sana?”

“Yeah?”

“Why are you sitting here?”

Sana took a deep breath and finally turned to face her. Beautiful as ever, despite being completely disheveled. She swayed slightly in the way she did when she was more than a few shots in. Her makeup was a little smudged and she nervously played with the hem of her jacket. Sana tried very hard to forget the look on Momo's face when she’d walked in on such a private moment – and tried to ignore the pang of jealousy for not having been the cause of it.

“I twisted my ankle.” She said plainly.

“Oh my god – are you okay? I can get help-”

“I don’t need help. I’m just waiting for the pain to go away a little so I can call an uber and get home.”

“Sana-”

“You know me, Momo, I’m clumsy. It isn’t broken, it’ll just hurt for a bit.”

Momo was thinking hard, Sana could tell, looking up the street and trying to form any sort of plan.

“The youngests’ dorm is close. We can bring you there. Here, let me carry you.” She came closer, arms set to wrap around her. Sana could smell the tequila on her breath.

“I don’t want to be carried.” She said softly. “I want to sit here and breathe. Go back to your friend, have a good night. It’ll be good for you to unwind.”

“I’m not just going to leave my best friend sitting on a curb with a sprained ankle twenty minutes after she’s walked in on me having gross frat house bathroom sex. That sounds kinda like the worst night ever.”

Despite herself, Sana chuckled. Momo seemed reassured by this, and took the initiative to sit down next to her.

“Were you running because of the…”

“Because I walked in on you having gross frat house bathroom sex? Yeah, maybe.” Sana said. Momo snorted. As always, she found herself settling back into their old routine easily; teasing Momo, laughing with her. Gazing into those concerned eyes and wishing she could read minds but being so, so glad she couldn’t. And feeling tears burn behind her own.

“No, not entirely.” She continued. “I should have.. stayed home. Spent a good night in.”

Momo nodded. A few seconds of silence went by. “You seem like you need it lately.”

“Hm?”

“You just seem… I don’t know. There’s less laughter in your eyes, lately.” She whispered. She tossed a pebble onto the street. “You seem so… lifeless, sometimes. And… I don’t know.”

She didn’t answer. How was she going to explain away this one? She stared at the rock Momo had just thrown. Chewed her lip, and tried not to let the dams break. Her chest ached, her eyes burned.

Momo took a deep breath. “Is it me?” It was almost too soft to hear.

“What?”

“You seem so sad around me. I mean, I asked Dahyun, and she said she doesn’t really think you’ve been acting different. A-and it feels like you avoid me. I… listen, Sana, whatever I did-”

“You didn’t do anything, Momo.” Sana finally met her eyes again. They were shining with tears.

“You can tell me. Really, I-” Her voice broke, and so did Sana’s heart. “I’m so sorry, for whatever it is. You’re my best friend, Sana. I wouldn’t ever hurt you on purpose.”

Her best friend.

“Momo, no.” Her own voice was thick with emotion, now. “You’re perfect. It’s me, I’ve just been in my own head.”

“About me?”

Yes.

“No. It’s only to do with me, no one else. Please don't worry.”

“I can't not worry. You can tell me, you don’t have to deal with this alone. We’re best friends, we tell each other things. I just can’t stand to see you so upset. Please, let me help.”

They’re best friends, they tell each other things. Sana nodded.

“Momo. I love you.” She whispered. Offered a little smile and saw no recognition pass behind Momo’s eyes: fully the reaction she expected.

“I love you too, Sana.” She answered without a second thought.

It was an entirely different sentence coming off of Momo’s lips. And that hurt, more than her ankle, more than the burning embarrassment as she ran from the party.

“I know you do.” She whispered, still forcing a smile. She felt tears burn behind her eyes. She nodded. “I love you,” She said again. And Momo pulled her into a tight hug.

“Please, let me help. Tell me what’s wrong.”

Sana shook her head. She’d just told her. And Momo wouldn’t register it, not in a million years, because Sana loving her romantically wasn’t anywhere near on her radar.

“What can I do, Sana?”

“Just hold me.” She whispered. “Please.”

She felt Momo nod. She tucked her head into her chest, breathing in the familiar smell of sweat and alcohol and perfume and laundry. Felt the familiar hand rub up and down her back.

“I love you too, Sana, I always will.”

Closed her eyes and just let herself pretend for a little bit, sitting on the curb in the yellow street lamps.

MONA SAYS .. sobs bc i posted this a week too early so pretend you haven’t seen this

at this moment in time, lua is craving for her bed. it can’t be helped; three hours of dance practice really wears a person out. and while the dinner that the girls treated her to was lovely, it barely pulled her energy up.

(but her tummy was happy so she supposes it did do something.)

“thanks for dropping me off,” she tells her manager before stepping out of the car.

while walking to the dorm, she rummages through her bag for her phone. a bit of lua hopes that she finally got a text back from her boyfriend, but it’s crushed by the lack of notifications.

tsk, there goes the rise of her suspicions.

it’s a rarity for jisung to leave her on seen. even when he’s in producer mode, he always sends at least a heart or a selfie.

lua shakes her head, dispelling those thoughts in favor of opening the door to her dorm. not even a foot in and she already feels wary because when has the place ever been this quiet?

is it already that late? she checks the time on her watch—kind of, but there’s usually at least one member who’s trying to keep their keyboard pressing to a minimum volume.

did they go somewhere? no, they’d shoot her a message if they did.. so what the fuck is going on?

“star? min? anyone home?” she cautiously calls out while walking down the hallway. with one hand tightly clutching onto her bag, lua turns toward the living room and blindly searches for the light switch. “i swear it was just here yesterday—”

“surprise!”

the sudden yells elicit the orange haired girl to jump back and drop her bag. when she comes down from her shock, she finally absorbs the scene: her members stand there with wide smiles on their face, party hats atop of their heads, and a red velvet cake in jongho’s hands.

and the best part? they have company.

“inka!” lua throws her arms around her best friend, pulling her in a tight embrace. (it doesn’t matter if she just saw the younger female a couple weeks ago, she still missed her a lot.)

out of the corner of her peripheral view, she sees jisung pouting, arms open wide. “hey.. what about me?”

“wait your turn, it’s not my fault yue loves me more.” inka playfully gloats, causing a river of chuckles to flow through the group.

wooyoung, never the recipient of best in assurance award for a reason, pats the sulking boy’s shoulder and tells him, “you’ll get used to it. we did after frequently hearing her fangirl over sunmi-sunbaenim.”

“don’t forget that for this past month, it’s been hourglass-sunbaenim.”

(yeosang’s another one who has never won that award.)

“alright, that’s enough tattling.” is what lua says once she finally pulls away from her best friend. “so what’s the cake for?”

“to celebrate your birthday, silly!” wooyoung cheers, his antics supported by mingi’s clapping.

“wait, it’s my what?”

this time, seonghwa speaks up. “today’s your birthday. did you not realize that?”

“..no?”

“well i guess we can consider this surprise a success. happy birthday, moonlight.” the eldest male gives her a small hug before stepping back to let san put a party hat on her, along with a greeting. “happy birthday, bambi.”

she pulls him in for a hug too and mumbles, “thank you, sannie.”

the party commences from there. after lua had blown out the candle on her cake (and got icing smeared on her face, courtesy of jisung and wooyoung, who got the same treatment) everyone had scattered across the living room. some were enjoying a slice of cake, a couple were arranging the gifts that had been hidden in the spare room, and others were chatting with the birthday girl.

“so this is why you seenzoned me, hm?” she teases her boyfriend who splutters, the apples of cheeks slowly blossoming into a rosy tint.

yunho laughs at the sight and inputs, “it was quite the scene, he was panicking so much that he almost dropped his phone.“

“i just didn’t wanna ruin the surprise..” jisung weakly defends himself before deciding that hiding his face in the crook of his girlfriend’s neck will save him.

(judging by the keep it pg guys! that wooyoung throws at them, it does the opposite. though the remark yeosang slides in on their behalf kind of soothes the embarrassment.)

everyone appears to be having fun, they’re seemingly enjoying themselves, especially due to seonghwa pulling out the twister game.

“when did hwa even purchase that toy?” she whispers to hongjoong who shrugs his shoulders. “i think we should be more worried about what will happen if mingi has to put a hand or foot on the red circle.”

sure enough, the blonde giant decides to forfeit rather than risk the chance of ripping his favourite joggers.

but lua doesn’t watch much more after that, not when she notices someone missing from all the fun. so after giving her slice to hongjoong, she heads over to the dining table, where inka sits all by herself.

“knock knock~” she raps her knuckles on the surface before taking the seat next to her. noting the small jolt in the younger, lua lightly jokes, “i’m no telepath but i feel like you have something you’d like to tell me.”

inka gives her a small smile. “i was just thinking of how grateful i am that you came to train at jyp. accidentally walking into that practice room was a blessing, and i’m not ever going to take it for granted; not when it gave me you. it doesn’t matter what else life decides to throw at us, i’m always going to be here for you, and i have faith that you’ll do the same for me.”

lua tugs at the sleeves of her cropped cardigan to wipe the tears that fall from her eyes. then she takes her best friend’s hands in hers and promises, “regardless of what happens, or where we find ourselves in the future, i’ll never stop supporting you.”

she quickly swipes away inka’s tears, aware that she doesn’t want the others to see, and pulls her in for another embrace. her hand gently caresses her back, a gesture she’d always do whenever she wanted to comfort her, but didn’t know what words to use.

they stay like that for a little longer before jisung yells out, “i won!”

the two girls decide to vacate the dining room and watch the winner be congratulated by his rivals. seeing as how they didn’t really have a prize, hongjoong concocts an impromptu reward and whispers it to seonghwa.

the older member seems to agree with it, for he smirks slightly. “and now, you shall get a kiss from the birthday girl.”

“huh? but is she okay with that? i mean yeah- yes she is my girlfriend but-” a kiss on the cheeks is all it takes for the blushing male to malfunction.

a click rings through the room, followed by inka mumbling, “saving that for future confidential purposes.”

laughter follows suit again. “alright, next round. winner gets a hug from the birthday girl!“ hongjoong announces, shortly sticking his tongue out at the light smack lua delivers to his arm.

at this moment in time, all lua craves is to have this.. night (or is it considered day?) captured in her memories. because moments like these have energy surging through her body.

and those ten people, the ones who try to keep their balance while intentionally bumping each other, a couple merely spectating while eating cake, plus the one sitting next to her with his hand entwined with hers?

they are one of the reasons she doesn’t regret choosing this life.

She is a powerful being and through her fires, she is the patroness of healing arts, fertility, poetry, music, prophecy, agriculture, and smith-craft. Brigid adored her worshippers, she always found herself walking among them giving them all she had and helping them. Due to her compassionate nature, the story about Saint Brigit was born being only one of the pagan gods to be converted into christian story. It was sad that people were turned away from the celtic gods & goddesses yet her story managed to endure the test of time.

There was a time when she was married to Bres, he was the king of the Tuatha Dé Danann, He was an unpopular king, and favored his Fomorian kin ( Their traditional rivals are the Fomorians who seem to represent the harmful or destructive powers of nature ). Their marriage was to build relations between the Tuatha Dé Danann & Fomorian, she was blinded by the love for him as Bres is beautiful to behold, yet harsh and inhospitable and their child Ruadan who was later was slain while fighting for the Fomorians while trying to assassinate Goibniu. Bríg invents keening, a combination of weeping and singing, while mourning for her son. She truly hates war of any kind it always brings her so much pain and sorrow due to being a mother once before then losing a son.

The goddess vowed never to raise another child again and let them be raised by their human parents instead as she would rather not mourn over another one of her children’s death once again. Like every other deity they would let demi-gods blossom by themselves or human father praying that they are kind to them. It quickly came to Brigid’s attention that she should live her life the way she wanted it, she leaned into what she enjoys becoming carefree as buried down about mistakes in the past and doing things for herself for once.

Now the goddess with bright orange wild hair tends to wander around Mount Phoenix doing whatever she feels like, as a freelancer she ends up doing odd jobs at her own leisure. There are various skills she can offer to lend a helping hand, from fixing broken objects to some self defense classes. Brigid does like to volunteer at the Asclepius General offering kind supportive words to the patients there. Maybe in Mount Phoenix she can finally be at peace, not worry about politics or war.

POWERS: doesn’t really have super amazing abilities like other goddesses yet she is very skilled metal worker which is great being diy person. She is natural talent in medicine to patch up any injures which the workers may have while building since it is dangerous job. brigid is natural poet who loves the arts & very creative soul she tends have the ability to talk her way out of anything, mostly anything. finally, she is well-verse in martial arts she knows how to take someone down without batting eyelid never underestimate her or you could end up regretting it.
