Astro Fighter Sunred & The Art Of Fruitful Parody
Tumblr media
Tokusatsu is a genre of unfettered passion. On the physical level it is painstakingly putting together costumes and sets, practicing moves and stunts. In its storytelling, especially its popular hero-centric TV shows, they juxtapose the extraordinary against human existence. Always looking at one with the added opinion of the other.
It is following this description that most parody or homage to tokusatsu and battle shonen following the same golden vein falter in fully realizing the most central component of toku’s storytelling strength: How it welcomes the simple act of living.
Astro Fighter Sunred comes the closest to doing so.
WHAT ARE YOU ON ABOUT NOW?
Tumblr media
Astro Fighter Sunred is an anime that describes itself as the continuing battle between good and evil. Its hero, a washed up super sentai member trying to strike out on his own, and its antagonists an organization of monsters and supervillains hellbent on that specific hero’s defeat. Of course, both sides are plagued by the fact they live in a present day society that requires them to keep up steady jobs.
The organization Florsheim’s local branch in the city of Kawasaki is headed by the soft-voiced homemaking elder in General Vamp, as he directs a couple of fodder henchmen and various evildoers with their own specialties (as well as jobs and personal shortcomings) in their near daily attempts to defeat Red. Red himself is weary of heroics and thus unemployed, having moved in with his office worker girlfriend Kayoko. Between battles, the two sides revert to a neighborly disposition: Kayoko and Vamp strike up a friendship and share advice. Even Red takes an “informal” approach to his foes, taking the time to speak with them and growing to look out for their safety from other heroes (when he’s not curbstomping and lecturing them personally).
IT’S A DECONSTRUCTION? RECONSTRUCTION? WHAT??
Tumblr media
Parody and subversion seem so easy to do. Reverse roles, make shocking unexpected decisions. They can however, become too excessive: we’re all aware of the overdone grim deconstruction, or attempts at reconstruction that often self-deprecates itself too heavily before it can be enjoyed in any genuine manner.
But the greatest plague that takes them in either form, is that they’re heavily self-referential. Too consumed with precisely capturing rules, tropes, heavier action, humorous callbacks thereof, and other perceived establishments that take the priority away from plotting and characterization. The glut of mainstream (shonen) anime/manga and American superhero films have come to rely on these as a crutch, fans priding themselves more on recognition of aesthetic aspects before storytelling structure.
By comparison, Astro Fighter Sunred has just enough inspiration, and twice as much heart.
General Vamp literally takes breaks mid-episode to do a segment on easy to cook meals. Kayoko and Red argue, make-up, and figure out who does certain chores better. Each monster has their own job/hobbies/social life along with their impeccable range of designs. Red and Florsheim are perfect opponents for each other, as Florsheim is too meek to battle other heroes, yet vastly stronger than any other evil organization in the country. Growth is a shared experience.
Red can be crude, but never unrepentant. The monsters of Florsheim (for all their repeated attempts on his life specifically) are still his neighbors, and even more important are his attempts to echo the welcoming and forgiveness that Kayoko offers, although she herself can give way to frustration as any other character on the show might feel. These conflicts eventually culminate in a mending of fences, be it metaphorical or quite literally repairing property damage.
BUT OTHER STORIES DO THAT AND THEY’RE FAR MORE POPULAR?
Tumblr media
The failing that other parodies and homages to tokusatsu and other superhero stories all too often fall prey to is an inability to look at the genre beyond the surface: its action sequences, critique on the quality of costuming/effects, and constant utterance of words like “peace,” “justice,” and similar until their meaning is numbed. It could be argued this newfound void in language opens up the journey to finding an answer to our questions of what comprises the truest creed of heroism.
It strikes me more as an illusion of interpretation.
Certainly, the question provokes us to pursue a thoughtful response. But without follow-up or some kind of conclusion on the part of the story, the vagueness keeps exploration of ideas to a surface level minimum. For example: the currently active One-Punch Man* and My Hero Academia** remain as victims to this effect, meandering through the ideas they offer. And Concrete Revolutio*** waits for the both of them at the gates of total narrative oblivion.
*One-Punch Man is a good series thus far and does well to explore the tropes of shonen anime/manga and tokusatsu hero shows by way of affectionate parody. But the webcomic and its anime/manga adapations tend to fall back on the weaker aspects of the shonen manga’s traditions at times, weakening its own ideas.
**MHA takes larger inspiration from American comic books. Though the action may be creative at times, it still follows genre status quos of both shonen and superheroes. Despite raising attention to certain plot points and worldbuilding that could be points for conflict and exploration, it instead echoes the same approach as say, the Marvel Cinematic Universe does for live action media. Making observations that trail off into nowhere, otherwise remaining in the safe zone of sanitized action/comedy.
***Concrete Revolutio is a deconstruction of old school anime/manga, tokusatsu, and other pop culture in the same vein as 1980s western comics like Watchmen or the Dark Knight Returns. While it boasts an impressive array of familiar visual aesthetics, its floundering characterization and attempt to connect disparate story threads into an overarching plot struggle under the weight of its self-importance.
Astro Fighter Sunred on the other hand accomplishes so much more: Its concentration upon the mundane, even in the company of the extraordinary not only provide a comedic contrast, but also help to highlight the sort of world that its larger-than-life characters fight at all for, be it in the pursuit of peace or in conquest. Character ambitions are not limited to brooding in uncertainty– the removal of meaning, but serious personal contemplation towards the future and recognition of where meaningfulness is applied– in relationships, precious keepsakes, and old habits that are hard to kick. Life experience is always embraced, enhancing the sum totality of the tale.
And it’s not entirely subversive in its take on tokusatsu: Mostly because the more straightforward tokusatsu shows AFS calls to mind have always had these self-reflective explorations on their own, even in the earliest Showa era series. Mileage may vary by series and era released, but the attempt is always there. Even through all the toy commercials and other promotional material, there will always be an attempt to be thoughtful, heartfelt, and sincere in a way that does not condescend viewers young and old alike.
AFS never derides simply because an aspect is familiar, but rather only if there’s something to be said. It touches upon points of potential for character interaction and development that stories prioritizing self-referential content might gloss over, offering something that the storyteller ought to be conscious of. And to the entire audience, viewers of all stripes from the casual to the observant, AFS still offers an experience that can be thoroughly felt on an emotional level, where investment shall be rewarded with certainty.
OH, OK. SOUNDS COOL I GUESS.
It’s also an anime where the intro has a small, constant change in which Red tries to sell off his old souped-up sentai bike, the price sticker slapped on it for passerby’s ever-decreasing in his desperate attempt to haggle to bidders he may never meet.
There is no Florsheim monster he cannot defeat, but the challenge of facing each new day’s perils (and errands) is one Red shares with all of us.

I'm waiting for tests to run, and my brain came up with something even worse than Morlund's Montgolfiere.
Now, I don't think the three would leave Hidden Ember, but imagine, for a second here.
Avad wants to repurpose the Sun-Rings. Not every Sun-Ring can become a memorial. And the Carja populace is missing their entertainment. But how do you do entertainment without killing people? So he sends out messages to get ideas. And Morlund, Abadund and Stemmur come up with a parcour. Something between Ultimate Beastmaster and Takeshi's Castle (narrated by Stemmur, of course).
Maybe in the Sunring at Sunfall? Anyway. Shortly before construction is done, Aloy comes along on her way back east, and he asks her to test-run things, because, of course he does, and she does it. And it's not trivial. But she manages it. (maybe even in a timed manner? would be quite a fun side-activity like the machine races).
And Abadund instantly realized what a great marketing opportunity this is, because now the challenge is not only "can you manage the parcour", but also: "Can you best the Saviour".
Things get a little difficult, when the first Nora encounter this thing, because, that's just a version of the proving. Without the Grazer Hunt at the start. Why would anyone not manage that. And the Carja remember why there were so many scary stories about the savages of the east.
