Random rant but like when I was 14-15 years old the internet was hitting a weird cultural moment where feminism was all about “reclaiming sexuality” and “ending slut shaming” but all that was really happening was adults were encouraging young women, including teens, to just “be a slut do whatever you want”, “fuck boys get money”, and basically somehow exert power over men with like, uncensored feminine wiles and blatant sexuality and stuff. Oh, and kink was having a super public moment (and still is I guess) and if you weren’t loudly into BDSM then you were boring and stifled and vanilla.

And like, yeah, obviously shirking the stigma around women’s pleasure and sexuality is a very real and necessary feminist action, but the execution of this weird online mini feminist wave was so clumsy and dangerous. Anything that sells women the idea that they will be more idependent or empowered or whatever by putting themselves in a vulnerable position with men is so disingenuous. Guess who benefits from women being encouraged to have more, riskier sex with men? It’s not women y’all.

And it had real world consequences! I can attest that every young woman in my social circle at 15 was concerned not just with the run-of-the-mill teenage pressures to have sex and fit in, but to have lots of “casual”, un-emotionally involved sex, the “kinkier” it was the more cool and liberated or whatever you seemed. And like the reality of life is that being 15 is really fucking hard as it is and asking girls that age to sever emotional connection and their sense of safety and security from their sexuality is absolutely damaging to them. Every single girl I knew who got taken in by like “baby slut” culture for lack of a better term wound up having really negative sexual and emotional experiences as a direct result of it. Some still are.

Like you know what, if anything, should have come out of that movement? Young women learning to say no to their boyfriends, learning to listen to their bodies and feel safe and comfortable with someone before deciding to sleep with them, young women insisting that if they’re going to be sexually active that their pleasure matters too and that teenage boys better step their fucking game up and learn to listen to their girlfriends. Sexual boundaries and assertiveness should have been the focus. But no, instead all of that really harmful messaging trickled down into my friends and I having pissing contests about who was having kinkier sex or having the best friends with benefits arrangement or whatever at our slumber parties. I just am still so angry that that happened to us, and I’m not sure if it’s still happening? And I don’t know who to blame either. I don’t know if it was a well intentioned organic thing gone horribly wrong or something quickly bastardized by lipstick companies trying to sell us blowjob-proof lipstick or what but I’m really angry that I got pressured into doing a lot of things that I now know were really damaging. Did other people experience this the way I did?
